Are Renee Zellweger's unkempt 'anti-Cara' eyebrows the reason she looks so different? How a lick of Photoshop to fill them in drastically alters her appearance

Renee Zellweger caused quite the commotion when she stepped out looking virtually unrecognizable at an event in LA on Monday night.

And while many have speculated that her changed appearance is due to a chemical peel gone wrong, it seems her unkempt eyebrows are also a big part of the problem.

Indeed, with just a lick of Photoshop to trim down and fill in her brows, the 45-year-old actress appears to almost - thought not quite - return to her former self.

The star was at ELLE's 21st annual Women In Hollywood Awards at the Four Seasons Hotel in California when she debuted her new look, prompting fans to voice their concern.

Apart from her ultra line-free forehead and suspiciously puffy face, she also had much lighter and patchier eyebrows than usual.

Indeed, the lack of tweezing and upkeep might be considered the 'anti-Cara' brow, the exact opposite of the thick, well-drawn brows supermodel Cara Delevingne has become known for and made trendy.

Until recently, Renee seemed to be a fan of the groomed brow, too; in a photo from an awards show in 2008, her brows are significantly more defined.

But there was no trace of her formerly well-groomed brows this week, making the actress look like an entirely different person.

According to celebrity make-up artist Rachel Wood, whose clients include Mariah Carey and Louise Roe, the star 'clearly has had some work done'.

She told MailOnline: 'The texture of her skin looks like she has gone a little too far with a chemical peel as its texture looks very smooth and plastic-like shiny, yet the color on top looks like the remnants of fake tan.'

Making matters worse: Celebrity make-up artist Rachel Wood says the shapelessness of her brows merely serves to further 'distort' the new frame of her face, which was likely brought on by 'some sort of lift'

The more hair the merrier! One person who clearly doesn't mind an unplucked, unkempt brow is her boyfriend Doyle Bramhall. He grinned through his bear and head of hair and was clearly thrilled to be on Renee's arm

Ms Wood added: 'She is known for cute but heavy lidded eyes and it appears as though she has had some sort of lift, maybe a bit of Botox by the brow as well to open up her eyes. I am all for a secret nip and tuck but in small doses, so you still look like a fresher, rested version of you… not an unrecognizable one.'

The shapelessness of her brows merely serves to further 'distort' the new frame of her face, says Ms Wood.

She added that the metallic red eyeliner Renee was wearing was likely used to create a soft smokey effect, but it 'doesn't quite work with the blotchy skin tone. I would have gone for gun metal grey or stuck to a cooler toned liner to give her eyes a brighter effect.'
