Bought this for a budget friendly alternative to Ylang in Good . Initially the opening is very similar to Ylang in Gold . Eventually the creaminess starts going into more of a shampoo direction with the florals but remains soft , still sweet and still has the creaminess. It’s pretty but I prefer Ylang in gold . This one starts to become a skin scent after 15 mins . I would buy a fb but it’s hard to find unless you go to their site and I don’t think for the price point it’s worth it… I wouldn’t spend more than $30 on this, I had to get travel size from fragrancenet but don’t regret it . It’s a pretty fragrance

To me, the only way to find a scent that fits you is by trying many different ones. When you find a scent that you kind of like you then can go online to terrific sites like this one to find similar scents. Then you basically follow a trail of scents related to that first one, some less appealing and some more, as you move closer to a scent that feels like it is made with you in mind. This is how I eventually found Hanae Mori Hanae Mori. The confusing mess they made of naming their scents notwithstanding, it is the scent that fits me better than any other I've tried. I love it and have stocked up with enough to last for a very long time (I have experienced the tragedy of loved products becoming no longer available).

With hyped modern sweeties like Princess and Oriana being the rage, I forgot all about my gourmand phase from 2014, lol. While cleaning out my perfume closet, I came across a small bottle of HM Parfum and decided it needed a spot on my vanity.
Worn today in COLD WET WIND weather, it's strong, comforting, not too juvenile, not too much of anything- just creamy sweet and relaxing. It's not mature, not classy, not professional... but neither am I. I wear what I want, when I want and if that's Shalimar great- but today it's Hanae Mori. ;) Sandalwood, almond-vanilla, with whisps of strawberry. Yes, a bit plastic, and today that's fantastic.

Edp, one of the best doll head scents if not the best… Pure nostalgia! 🍓

cstuff

Nostalgia in a bottle! I wore this as a kid, so it screams girlhood for me. I may repurchase one day just for the fun of it. This perfume reads very 90s and 2000s to me. I was still wearing it as recently as 5-6 years ago as a young adult, but haven't since then as it ran out very fast from persistent use on my part.

fumongous

Bought a fresh bottle of the EdP from HM website when their sale was on. I’m kind of sad. This is less sweet and less “thick” than I recall (haven’t worn this one for a long time- will have to dig out my old bottles of this and compare to see if this has changed or maybe it’s my nose).

Vesperexa

This is really similar to Lolita Lempicka Green Lover, but less cloying and headache-inducing. It's so cheap I had to pick it up, just to have a doll head smell like this in my collection. It's inoffensive, sweet and lovely. I'd say it's a little powdery too.

PerfuMEOW

I'm so sad to say that I don't love this as much as I used to back in 2005 when I first bought it. It's beautiful but now gives me a headache.
Willing to swap with someone who REALLY appreciates this gem. I have a 90-95% full 30ml Pure Parfum, a 50-55% full 50ml EDP and a 85-90% full 100ml EDT.

kjanet

I have a bottle of Butterfly that is probably almost 15 years old at this point, and I still love it. Definitely get the dolls-head vibes, but this fragrance just feels like a warm, sweet, cozy hug. I second pretty much everyone by saying its the most vanilla you can get without any actual vanilla in it? Witchcraft!

Dorothy812

The berries are not sharp at all, mixing in with the sandalwood and almond to create a candied flavor and feeling. Very feminine, synthetic but not obnoxious, sweet and warm without the hyperbole of modern gourmands. Beautiful.

sunnyviolets

If you've ever wished Febreze was a perfume, here you go. It's so pleasant. Light, fresh, yet comfortable. Tommy Girl's warm counterpart. Very 90's, early 2000's. An easy reach for something casual.

Not Katie Puckrick's favorite, fair warning lol.

Lauren387

I love how scent can take us back to a certain place, time, experience… My first serious boyfriend bought me this perfume in 2005/06-ish. He had the bottle engraved at Nordstrom with the inscription “Lauren you give me butterflies” and a small drawing of three butterflies. They really fit a lot on the front of that little bottle lol (I believe it was a 50 ml). He has since passed away but the memories are as warm and lasting as this fragrance.

goldfishmemoirs

i won a bidding war on ebay &it smells like lychee mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Jannee

This Hanae Mori was my first EDT strawberry scent (cuz I was only using a cheap strawberry cologne before). Soo everytime I wear this, my bf tells me I smell sweet like a strawberry mousse or candy. It also matches my skin chemistry so despite it being and EDT, it still lasts longer than expected? The dry down of this does not have that scent trail or big scent bubble, but it does give you an intimate/skin scent which is okay. Its like you know you're wearing it but other people won't know you're wearing it unless they stand very close to you or hug you or lean on your shoulders (you get it.)

I'd rate it 7.5/10. If you reapply every 6hrs, then I guess it will have better sillage or bigger scent bubble😊

chosesvert

First impressions: fruity and clean, but not soapy. Leans synthetic, and I think the currant pushes this too sweet for me. Syrupy rather than heady. There's some playfulness in putting the sweet fruity floral with a base that shares a lot of notes with typically masculine scents. I wish this developed more over time, rather than throwing everything at me at once to see what sticks

melleners

I just love this fragrance and have been wearing it for years. It's so fruity and flowery with a woody base. Just beautiful!

densirechan

I used to wear this a lot but now I dont use it as much,I purchased another bottle and it has like 2oz left,Im trying to resell it if anyones interested send me a pm. But yeah it does smell very good and many people like it,some say it reminds them of their mom.Is a sweet and nice smell. Better for coldel days imo.
I have the Blue butterfly version no box.

Tessa03

So beautiful! Purchased heavily discounted and I can confirm this is very similar to Ylang in Gold. I now own both and for the cost difference - if you are on a budget get Butterfly (I own the Pink Butterfly EDT). Pink butterfly smells like powdery bananas! I know that doesn’t sound appealing but I love it. It’s soft, powdery, feminine and comforting. Glad I purchased this!

EDT PINK BUTTERFLY VERSION

I now understand what people mean when they say something smells like a doll's head, and I will no longer be purchasing scents that are heavily reviewed as such. Lol.

It does fade into something creamier and maybe even a little more berry like later on— I get more blackberry than strawberry, but the idea of some of these smells evoking strawberry isn't impossible to me.

The problem with the dry down is that I've already smelled the opening— even if, in the drydown, I can recognize that all the subtleties of this scent as a gourmand as pleasant, I'm still picking up one of those notes as a baby doll daycare scented plastic mess. Shame, I was looking forward to this one!

Pari88

This and Lolita Lempicka are two of the most unique and enchanting scents ever created. They are both very recognizable and not timeless at all, but very encapsulated; this is why they do not get the wear time they both deserve-but now that I am older, I don’t care much if it smells recognizable and I will be repurchasing both again and again.

Peaches&Cream

Hanae Mori smells like a fruity vanilla fragrance. At first I had a hard time getting to like this perfume since it had a vintage gourmand smell to it, started to wear this more and layer it with other scents and smelled more of the fruits, woody, vanilla notes. I do not smell any floral which I do not mind at all. Finally wearing this for spring weather and I can say that it brings out the fragrance. It would be too cloying in the summer.... in my opinion, however wearing this for winter, spring and fall will be great since the notes do change during the seasons.

suzanne_ronald

Vanilla Sandalwood with a Ylang & a Fruity Blueberry note...

This timeless beauty was love at first scent for me. This smooth blend of vanilla woods, including creamy yellow florals & sweet fruits, puts an oily sheen on the skin and takes off once it warms up. I get a blueberry note with background fruits in the air and on the skin I get vanilla, sandalwood and ylang. Although it's fairly linear, in the drydown it takes on a brown sugar quality.

Contrast to Vanilla Fields Coty:
Although these have been compared I find them very different. They both may be woody vanillas, but Hanae Mori is more vanilla forward and a heavier, smooth and sweet blend of vanilla woods & creamy yellow florals and doesn't have the solar or sharp qualities from bergamot and Lily of the Valley present in Vanilla Fields. Occassionally with HM I get a wiff of something slightly like bergamot, and it's here that I get why they're compared, but not similar enough to substitute one for the other.

Contrast to Hanae Mori Eau Fraiche:
If not compared side by side it's hard to tell them apart, however side by side the Eau Fraiche doesn't take on nearly as much brown sugar and has a few more floral touches. Both have fantastic performance.

Overall: well above average performance, this is a classic woody vanilla I will always want in my collection. 10/10. Enjoy!

Enrium

Hanae Mori is a cleverly composed sweet fruity scent, much better than expected from its ditzy profile. It falls firmly into what I call the "blonde-with-a-brain" category of fragrance. Feminine and youthful, it is pleasant, pretty and good-quality. A 1990s time capsule for some, this wasn't on the Irish market at the time of release. I have a vintage miniature from the noughties.

HM opens with bright, pleasant berry notes, tart and cordial-like initially, becoming sweeter and slightly jammy as they mellow on my skin. I get ripe strawberry and fresh cassis in particular.

As it develops, the sweet florals creep in. I get rose, blending beautifully with the berries. Powdery, clean jasmine rounds it out, while sweet, creamy ylang ylang adds a rich, tropical edge - slightly banana-like.

There is a sweet vanilla-amber quality to the drydown, grounded nicely by smooth woody notes. It fades to a sweet, slightly musky skin scent with dry vanilla remaining. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. A feminine, transeasonal scent, this should be applied sparingly, but is cheerful and pleasing.

HM is reasonably strong and sweet, but manages not to be cloying or headache-inducing. Instead, it is pleasant and bright, well put-together and doesn't take itself too seriously. It's not the type of thing I tend to go for, but HM has won me over. 4/5.

Our DollHead vanilla queen!

Soft woods and a strawberry milkshake served with a sprinkle of nostalgia that doesn’t feel dated.

No matter how far down the rabbit hole of fragrance testing and collecting I go, I always come back to this classic

sadiep123

This was a blind buy in rollerball form and I ended up getting a bottle and wear it all the time. I’ve never liked a perfume this much. This is a beautiful scent that I feel can truly be worn on any and every occasion including formal (or just any day). I usually wear it out on nights out, events, going out to dinner, ect. It’s honestly just so lovely. If you like scents that are more on the sweet /fruit-y/ vanilla-y side then you will probably like this. I usually don’t like florals that much, but this gives more like roses and baby powder. It kind of lingers on you in a way that is not overwhelming but also not gone in an instant. Butterfly is the perfect name for it. I love it. (Blue butterfly)

(I'm reviewing the Pink Butterfly EDP, thinking Fragrantica must have this one titled incorrectly.) This one seems to change quite a lot depending on your chemistry and even depending on what you eat. A cleaner diet seemed to amplify the fruits on my skin, while carb intake and sugar seemed to amplify the sweetness and florals. It's vanillin-heavy, but I like that a lot. The sillage is good and the longevity is as well. It's quite candy-esque, but not in a headache-inducing way. The floral notes are fresh enough to keep this from becoming cloyingly sweet. The almond is especially noticeable to me, but the rosewood is also loud enough to be perceived. It is extremely well-blended and balanced. It's warm in tone and excellent for cozy winters.

When I was in my late teens in college I would pass through Holt Refrew (a high end Canadian department store) every once in awhile and bathe myself in this perfume. I couldn’t afford it so I had to make sure everything I owned was covered in it to satisfy my craving. I wouldn’t even look at the other fragrances. I swore to myself that I would buy it when I could afford it and I did and I’ve been wearing it ever since (20 years later). I wore it on my wedding day and I still reach for it the most. To me it is a creamy, vanilla with a hint of fruit. I was amazed to see that vanilla wasn’t even listed as an ingredient but I suppose it’s the sandalwood that gives it that effect. It smells comforting, feminine and soft, and it still gives me the idea of a beautiful rich woman like I used to imagine all those years ago. Luckily I can buy it at a bargain now online but it used to be a very pricey fragrance! It will always be a classic to me.

pure_placeboeffect

I was wrong. My fragrance has settled down after the delivery, and now it only smells like JS’ Fancy in the first 5-10 minutes.

It smells very creamy, comforting, sweet, and quite powdery as well - marshmallows, strawberry milkshake, berry cheesecake, cream soda - you get the idea. I usually hate the berry notes in fragrances, but in this particular fragrance berries just add to the overall creaminess. Surprisingly, there’s actually no vanilla note in this fragrance, although to my nose it’s the most prominent note. The wood base makes this fragrance suitable for all ages and for all occasions and keeps this fragrance from becoming a generic juvenile body spray gourmand. The longevity and silage are moderate.

I imagine it would be a very safe blind buy, and a great choice for a gift - I really can’t imagine this fragrance offending anyone. It’s not bold, sensuous and loud. But it’s also far from boring and tame, and I imagine the woman who would perfectly embody this fragrance is calm on the outside and well-mannered, but very alluring, with the hidden side to her only few people know. I would not say I embody this kind of essence, but it has still grown to become my signature scent cause somehow I intuitively knew that this fragrance would suit me. Now I want to use up all my other perfumes as fast as possible, so others would only recognise me by this Scent.

The name Butterfly is very fitting, the ylang-ylang flower makes it a bit warm and somewhat honey-like as well. A perfect flower pollen.

Beautiful fleeting butterflies.

cosmeto fee

This is the dream parfume for those who love a good vanilla! This is a fruity caramel-y vanilla scent, quite linear, but it is a true and gourmand vanilla that lasts. A great quality parfume well blended that delivers its promise.

Mme Bovary

EdP version. There is a scene in Coppola's movie "Marie Antoinette" where French pâtisserie is being served: all pink, yellow and white with lots of vanilla, cream, berries, almonds. This is what Butterfly smells like. Very gourmand, just like Angel. But while Angel can sometimes feel a bit nauseating, like you had that one bite too much of rich chocolate tarte, with Butterfly you leave the table perfectly satisfied and with no regrets. My kids love it. It is my cold weather comfort scent for dreary days. Two sprays are plenty.

OTA Mom

To me this is mostly black current with ylang. Similar dna to others of the house.

BougieGirlShops

Reviewing the EPD blue butterfly version.

This is such an interesting and different fragrance. Not different like contemporary niche stuff, but unique and different for a 'classic' fruity floral pre-2000's. Realistic berries particularly strawberries and blueberries, jasmine, a lactonic sweetness, and nuttiness. The berries a juicy sweet with just a tinge of real fruit sourness, I would have guess frangipani or orange blossom although it's not listed as a note.

It's like a frozen yogurt berry smoothie sweetened with honey, or maybe an orange sherbert. I honestly don't know where it's coming from, but this is the creamiest fragrance I have ever smelled.

I'm still on the fence between like and love because it may be just a titch on the side of too sweet for my tastes.

Albedo

I might have received a bad batch based on the previous reviews. I can smell a faint, slightly sweet berry scent if I try very hard to detect it. However, the main and overpowering note is a headache-inducing and nauseating powdery, slightly musky, and floral accord.

mhubbard1961

This is an almost love, a very strong like. I get mostly strawberries. Everyone will like this. It is a young woman's scent but I wear it anyway. Suitable for work. If the bottle runs out, I'll get it again

Alexandraspritz

I love this fragrance. An easy reach for me during the day, night, work, anytime, anywhere. To me, this smells like a soft and light glittery, creamy mix of ylang, vanilla (though no vanilla notes listed?!) and berries. This has been a part of my life since the late 90’s and will always be in my collection. I simply cannot live without it. A timeless beauty, just like Hanae Mori herself…R.I.P.

birbgirl

I’m genuinely confused because this smells exactly like Secret “Powder Fresh” deodorant and I’m not getting any fruity notes at all. It doesn’t smell bad but it does smell like it belongs on my underarms.

CurlGurl

Smells like Jordan Almonds! Very sweet.

Detman101

Welp...I had this one for exactly one week before the wife stole it.
Guess I'm on the hunt for another bottle...😒

croissantlover666

this is one of the first perfumes i ever had in my collection, due to the fact that i got it for mega cheap at a perfume outlet. i used half the bottle in college, forgot about it, then rediscovered it tonight (about 3 years later) while searching thru my old perfumes.

this perfume is LOVELY. it’s girly and sweet, almost gourmond in a way. it has a scent that makes you audibily “mmmmm”. smells like juicy bright fruit in the opening, then dries down to a sweet fluffy creamy berry scent. it’s divine! very feminine and perfect for every day wear. also pairs perfectly with sweet whiskey by BBW- due to the berry and vanilla notes.

i find it a lot less sour than other fruity fragrances like burberry her. this one has depth and dries down to be sweet, fluffy, and creamy.

reminds me of a girl who wears pink lipglosses and wears satin pj sets to bed! shes feminine and sexy!!! get ur nose on it!!

nanza

I have the EDP. Very longlasting. Reminds me of the smell of a bowl of candied Jordan Almonds and Bubble gum. My bottle is a few years old, so not sure if it was re-formulated.

townej

Very easy reach and mass pleasing! Smells like strawberry milk shake!

Dawnya7b

Why am i so confused by this perfume. I get absolutely no berries no fruits. All i get is a creamy vanilla custard smell that it. Its beautiful and I got it for super inexpensive!

Dhayana

I ADORE THIS! Please give this one a chance. I have the Blue Butterfly EDP. The first 20 minutes are not good (artificial berries) but then it melts into your skin. It turns sweet and creamy on me, the most prominent notes are the strawberry, almond tree, ylang-ylang & sandalwood. I think this is the perfect signature scent because it's so diverse. You can wear this year round, day or night & any age 🤍

CatOwned

This is a review for the EDP. I love this smell. I can definitely smell the sweet notes and woodsy notes. I would describe this smell as almost sweet and spicy. It lasts a long time on me and stays smelling good the whole time. The only bad thing to me is I don't think this is a summer scent, otherwise it works best in moderate/colder temperatures imo.

takema

Fragrantica doesn't seem to have separate pages for the EDT and the EDP. Now that I have both, I see why. They are the same scent. I have no idea why there are two concentrations that smell and perform identical. I have worn both and tested them side by side and can't find any difference between the two. So if you have the EDT and think grabbing the EDP will give you better performance, my experience says, don't waste your money. I will be decluttering one of my bottles since it is redundant

I heard Hanae Mori was a pretty good dupe fpr Micallef Ylang in Gold. I agree that it is a similar scent, but it is the budget version. Ylang in gold is more lush and complex with that bit of spiciness that Hanae Mori doesn't have. But if you are on a budget, it is an excellent alternative.

When I have read and hear reviews of this fragrance a lot talk about the strawberry in the opening. When I wear this the berries are pretty subtle and this is mostly ylang ylang. I do notice the berries in the opening giving the fragrance a fruity sweetness, but they fade away and the sandalwood becomes more prominent. The sandalwood is nicely balanced and doesn't take over, like it sometimes can. Here, with the other woods, it gives the ylang ylang a warm woody base to rest on. The other florals in the mid are drowned out by the ylang ylang and I am not really able to percieve them.

Hanae Mori has pretty poor performance, It lasts 2-4 hours with decent projection for about an hour, then stays very close to the skin. It does last much longer on clothes and I can get a good part of a days wear by making sure a few sprays are directed to my clothing. I really like to wear this in the summer. For me ylang ylang and sunshine just go together. I do find if it is really hot and humid I have to spray a little more lightly because some of the other notes can become obnoxious and overwhelming. Although my preference is to wear this in summer, it works quite well all year. Especially whe I want a little tropical pick me up.

The bottle is simple and pretty with the cute butterfly inspired lid. The EDP and EDT bottles are identical except the colour on the backside of the Hanae Mori label is gold on the EDP and orange on the EDT. This fragrance is pretty easy to find on discounters, often for a great price, $30-40 for a 50ml bottle.

herculano

The vanilla here was created without using any vanilla, which is why this perfume is considered a bit of a marvel. I remember reading about it.
Something to do with the almond/Ylang combination.

It creates the “illusion” of a high quality vanilla, but zero vanilla was used.

Anyway, I still absolutely adore this but I stopped wearing it because I don’t find it all that long lasting.

I always question myself, though, when I think a quality perfume doesn’t last, that maybe I just go nose blind. So, still… I don’t know.

I have a vintage pink butterfly EDT (the blue butterfly is the EDP) and maybe because I am and always have been a total sucker for both strawberry AND ylang ylang (separately) it makes the scent of this perfume one of my dream scents. I just wish I could detect it on myself for longer.

It also slightly reminds me of LB Venezia, another perfume from that era that I adore.

Update:
I recently purchased the pure perfume (otherwise known as Red Butterfly) and it’s just as lovely as the edt however it is definitely longer lasting! They smell nearly identical. A little more Ylang custard in the pure perfume, and a little less strawberry. Layered together they create a delicious, perfect scent (for me, a lover of Ylang and strawberry scents).

This perfume will always be a definite favorite for me.

HollyWM

From a sample I received: one spritz and I'm nearly knocked over by the smell of berries, especially strawberries. Very fresh and realistic, but not really my style. I'm waiting and sniffing to see what happens next, but it's getting so up my nose in a prickling way that I'm going to have to bail and wash it off. I think I must have slept through the '90s, because I don't recall this or any fragrance like it. For them what likes it, I can see this would go well with strawberries and champagne in the countryside.

Lilyeerily

I love love fruity scents. I get no fruit from this. As it dries down, I smell...butter? Very unpleasant on my skin personally. Not for me.

SailorV

This review is for the EDT (pink butterfly). Hanae Mori fragrances are not easy to find where I live, so I can't compare the different versions, but I'm glad I was able to try this one because it's freaking delicious.
First of all, the EDT is definitely not a dupe for Chopard Cašmir. It has a similarities in texture, and that's it. This isn't spicy and balsamic like Cašmir, it's fruitier and girlier, and I think it's completely possible to like one of them and dislike the other.

Hanae Mori smells like strawberries, sweet vanilla milk, warm sandalwood and the slightest hint of peony and musk to keep it light and clean. It's creamy and milky, but also a little dry and almost dusty due to the woodsy base. I actually find it surprisingly multilayered. To me this definitely feels nostalgic, like some others mentioned, though I'm not sure what exactly it reminds me of. It just has that 90s childhood vibe, which I always love.
If this perfume had a color, it would be pastel pink. It would match beautifully with a soft, fluffy sweater in any light color. I see it more as a cold season scent, but I suppose it could be worn almost year-round without turning on the skin, at least in milder climates.

HeyJaye

This perfume opens beautifully with soft berries, vibrant florals, and an undercurrent of black currant/vanilla. Unfortunately after two hours I am left with the dark side of black currant—a mildewy essence reminiscent of the stacks of old books in a college library. If I put my nose to skin I can catch the other scent players but what is wafting around is dusty.

minipistachio

Vibe:
Your style is vintage items. Frills, lace, pearls, but there’s a haunting darkness to your style. You keep your clothes in a wooden wardrobe with sweet smelling potpourri. You’re either a teen with an old soul or a mother of children aged 5 and older. This is a warm, cozy perfume with a dark vintage vibe. I imagine you would wear this in winter because it’s much too sweet for hot weather.

Notes:
This fragrance is heavily floral. I do not understand why it is called a fruity floral at all. To me it’s a highly sweet, syrupy floral. Similar to an overly sweet jar of rose or floral preserves. The black currant note is heavy when you first spray it, but disappears after 10-15 minutes. I hate ylang ylang, which is a bummer since it’s detectable in this fragrance. I usually enjoy clean, fruity-floral scents (like Bombshell, Daisy, Bright Crystal) and I really detest this, even spraying it again after 8 years. I’m in my late twenties now and I still wouldn’t wear this fragrance because it feels too stuffy and old lady. I agree with the previous poster: I smell vanilla even if it’s not listed. There’s a sweetness to this perfume that’s hard to pinpoint based on the notes listed.

astamm62

I do like the scent....I don't smell any of the fruit, what I do smell is a note not listed.Vanilla.

anthirasamsara

I adored the top notes and opening but then it settled and became syrupy, I didn't smell any of the woody base notes at all.

eyi

I like it a lot. I do not smell the berries, and it is not a linear fragrance. I have to wear it most often and increase the number of sprays in order to check its longevity. It was a blind buy, and so far so good.
It is an airy, sweet, delicate, no overpowering ylang-ylang fragrance.
I recommend it.

Moonwalk Memorie

[BLUE BUTTERFLY EDT]
***update: I now understand that the EDT is supposed to be different from the EDP. Get on it, Fragrantica!***

Went through blind testing for a week and now as I see the notes, I am baffled.
▫️◻️🫐◻️▫️
Reads like a fruity-floral, but on my skin, it's high-end baby powder without seeming dusty. Or whipped creme and pleasant (though artificial) sweet blueberry. Hanae Mori is now my dupe for Aquolina's Gold Sugar, as that one pulled the same on me. This is softer. Fitting scent for the bottle's aesthetic. Now, don't ask me where my skin and nose hid all of the other notes.

Phedre1981

I remember smelling this when I worked at Macy's in the fragrance dept. during the holiday season of 2009. I didn't hate it, I just thought, wow, that's really not my style. Last year I got a sample of it with another purchase. I sprayed it on a shirt and was intrigued... it seemed much better than I remember. So, after having it on my wishlist for a while, I bought a bottle (EDT). Much to my dismay, it gives me the same definitely-not-for-me feeling of when I first tried it years ago. I rechecked the labeling on both bottle and sample and they appear to be the same. Hmmm. I sprayed the sample on white paper and it was quite orangey yellow. Maybe Hanae Mori OS (old and stale) smells better to me than a fresh new bottle? It seems richer, fruitier and less synthetic. I'm not sure what the deal is, but I should have trusted my first impression. To me, the new bottle smells mainly of plastic strawberries. I think I finally understand the "doll head" reference!

Chapi

One of my most disliked perfumes on earth. So metalic, sweet powdery burnt plastic, makes my stomach ache

Paddibear

Drinking a cream soda float in an old study or home library while playing with a My Little Pony! Mature enough for the woman you are but evocative of the little girl you used to be. Butterfly is absolutely magical and a true classic 🦋

BethyBee

A new blind buy for me based on notes because I love berry scents. Unfortunately I can't smell any fruitiness at all. I don't dislike this, but really can't see myself reaching for it. It really does remind me a lot of Casmir. This is more a cold weather fragrance to me. A blind buy "blah".

V4nilla

Always been interested in this. One review says this is a soft vanilla-marshmellow cloud. The next review calls this a chemical fruity mess. Didn’t know what to believe so i just blind bought it. I have the EDT.

Now the opening and middle are indeed very synthetic. The top note fruits smell really fake and combined with the strong initial alcohol blast, it’s kinda repulsive. Then the middle note florals appear and make it even worse. In my opinion, the fruits and florals together give it a hair spray vibe, which i think others identify as the doll head or plastic scent. At this stage, it reminds me of Britney Spears Intimate Fantasy, which i decluttered because it smelled like vanilla hair spray to me.

Luckly, the dry down saves the game. On my skin the fruits and florals disappear in about 15 minutes and all that is left is a woody vanilla, reminding me of a marshmellow. The dry down is sooo good and for that reason i can handle the first 15 minutes. However, on my clothes the dry down doesn’t come through as fast so i will probably only wear it on my skin.

This is one that my Fragrance Angel recommended --

Extremely HIGH PITCHED soprano chord which starts at first spray smells like a combination of the Madame Alexander plastic baby doll (or Mattel Barbie Doll head) that I remember in childhood and cupcake cake/birthday cake icing (extremely sugary sweet). I've smelled this note before, but never has it been SO Photo REALISTIC to the exact smell that I remember. This must be the notes of almond/vanilla. (You really Must LOVE Almond/Vanilla -- this is super strong at the first spray).

This is fresh, clean, and possibly even bordering on etherial and angelic at times.

The high pitched note is going a bit sharp/sour on my skin. I'm not sure that I can wear this, but that's not uncommon. I have some quirky things with my chemistry and certain fragrance notes.

30 minutes into the wear, and the strong notes are blending in better with my chemistry now. This is really soft, approachable, and still sweet now.

This is definitely one that you should sample first, or make sure that they have a good return policy in case you can't wear this. The high note is going so sharp on me that this could possibly be headache inducing.

The box came with the most gorgeous blue and gold butterflies. This is one of the most beautiful boxes I've seen since beginning this signature perfume search. The box is worthy of having a place on your perfume vanity, it is THAT PRETTY!

----------

Day 2 - Layering this with DKNY Nectar Love - which is a honey based note. This grounds the almond/vanilla where it is more tolerable. Actually, this is a nice combination.

------------

I've recently started to like Calvin Klein's Beauty - which is more spa-like than this perfume, but for some reason, I feel like if you like Calvin Klein's Beauty, you may also like the notes in this one. I would have to try this one again. It didn't work for me the first time I sprayed it, but I am gradually starting to like the more icy type perfumes that have the sweet crispness to them. This may be one to try sometime soon. I think you definitely need a warm up with this one, it is really shocking at first -- it is one of a kind, I have not smelled one that emits this type of strong plastic-y odor before. This was a first for me.

LinnieR

My review is of the EdP with the blue butterflies.

It smells like the taste of strawberry cream candies. Sweet, light, fun, addictive and somehow brilliant in its own simplicity. “Girlier” than the scents I usually go for and I think the reason I like it is the wood base, which is more of an incense type of scent. It balances the sweet, young aspect of the perfume very well.

Mari-Antoinette

This resembles a lot oriana by pdm. Oriana leans more orange blossom while this one a little
More woody.

silthrill

This is something between a gourmand and a sunscreen scent. The way that a skin scent sits close to the skin- this does the opposite. Strong projection. It’s like a Dior Hypnotic Poison with a fruity component (Dior Hypnotic Poison to me is also a sunscreen scent meets gourmand). There are strong synthetic notes which isn’t necessarily a bad thing- there’s sort of an aromatic lactonic base with berries on top. Overall a fun, playful, girly candy-like fragrance. If you like Prada Candy I believe you will like this as well- this is Prada Candy with a milky (vanilla although it’s vanilla-less base).

rosehips

Wearing this perfume was a chore. I kept trying to convince myself that I liked it but the plastic smell is awful. Barbie-head without nostalgia. Doesn’t work for me.

jellybees

This review is for the EDP/Blue Butterflies. I blind bought this based on a tiktok recommendation describing it as "doll heads and strawberries," and that's exactly what I get, in the best way! That's not to say it's "too young" - I think this one has stuck around so long because it would really work on anyone. It's just a nice, pleasant, soft smell. I get less strawberry and more doll head after a couple hours, but it mostly keeps the same sweet, nice notes through the dry down.

pheeatrixkiddo

This review is for the EDT, with the pink butterfly! So, so pretty. Honestly the only simply pretty perfume I truly love. It nestles into the skin all sweet and airy without being sticky. It’s a little desserty but not cloyingly so. The woody notes are beautiful - not a sharp and earthy wood, but something more flighted, like floating wispy incense trails amidst the sweetness of the vanilla and the berries. It settles into a creamy, soft, slightly artificial fantasy cloud of a scent over time and lasts a pretty decent time for an EDT, so for me it makes a great reach on days when I just want to feel lovely without thinking too much about it. I’m a 90’s strawberry fairy with pink butterfly wings, duh.

Incredible value. Beautiful 90s nostalgia trip, complete with beautiful y2k packaging.

Everyone who said there’s a little plastic doll head smell here was absolutely right, once I smelled it I couldn’t un-smell it, but honestly I kind of dig it. It gives an otherwise buoyant, innocently pretty perfume the smallest bit of edge. Like we all grew up curiously ripping the heads off of our toys but hey, we turned out okay. Look how pretty we smell!

SophiaG

This is fire - I was expecting nothing because it's so cheap and I was hearing people say it smells like plastic dolls. But it's actually sooo pretty, with sweet berries and cream and expensive soap. Just far enough away from being edible, it's gorgeous and mature, and is perfect for those days when you feel like casually throwing on a fragrance.

Edit: I know I said that it wasn't edible, but there's something about this that makes my mouth water when I smell it. Really, I'd love to eat something that tasted the way this smells - like berries and vanilla. Yum yum

lavenderclouds

I own the EDT version, also known as Pink Butterfly. The only way I can describe it is pretty. It's pretty! It's light, airy, ethereal glossy strawberry hard candy mixed with light pink rose, nutty almond, and creamy sandalwood. Everything feels feminine and fluttery and airy, exactly like the wings of a butterfly. It doesn't feel cloying, heavy, too sugary, or cheap. I much prefer a strawberry perfume like this to something like Burberry Her, which isn't bad but is a little syrupy for me at times. Pink Butterfly reminds me of my childhood: Barbie dolls, pink flowers in my room, the springtime wind in my hair, innocence.

frag_nostalgia

I think the plastic doll or play dough smell is almond in synthetic form, because hypnotic poison has the same accord and that same note. While the EDT is pretty, it isn't anything remarkable. I get a strawberry and blackberry opening, which quickly warms into a powdery almond vanilla. The florals are very subdued and disappear quickly. It dries down into a simple vanilla almond skin scent after about 30 minutes maximum, which lasts for about two hours. I understand to many this is a beloved and nostalgic frag, and it is indeed pretty; but as a 44 year old woman with no prior memories tied to this scent, it's simply unremarkable to me. It exudes youth, and is highly appropriate for the pre-teen to college age female.

Chavezb3

I’m obsessed. The most prominent notes to my nose are strawberry, ylang & sandalwood. It’s so smooth and sweet. At first it smells like a sweet, creamy crust of some sort of pie. The dry down is the best though!!! In the dry down I do get a plastic doll scent and it’s what makes it even better. 10/10

ringponies

I remember living this 15 years ago. Today all it remind me of is a generic vanilla candle. Reminds me a little of 90s Burberry, which I prefer.

saeglopur

I got the Blue Butterfly EDP after watching an Instagram Live with Bethany Joy Lenz, where she mentioned that she has been wearing this perfume since she was 20. I had also heard the scent described as "strawberry milkshake", so I was definitely intrigued!

At first spray, I got synthetic berries with an underlying cashmere-like fragrance. Then it mellowed into a somewhat powdery skin scent. Blue Butterfly is the girl next door: low-key yet good-looking, sweet yet strong, demure yet self-confident -- like Lenz' character in One Tree Hill, Haley James Scott. I can imagine someone like her wearing this perfume at school or on a date in the early 2000s. Comforting, youthful, and feminine…what more can you want?

ETA: It is the next day and I have spritzed more after a shower. Wow! I am definitely getting the lychee notes -- in fact, Blue Butterfly smells more like lychee with cream to me now! It's a dessert I enjoyed when I was young, so the scent brings back good memories. The tart, fruity, creamy notes are round and smooth, which makes Blue Butterfly addictive. Add a splash of nostalgia and it's a keeper!

Ensconce-in-Bloom

I am reviewing Hanae Mori, Parfum concentrate. On first spray, I get delicious lychee notes. The scent curates to a creamy, warmth of the skin type scent, with lychee tantalizing notes mingling in the background. Woodsy notes keeps Parfum version from being typical gourmand, and adds depth. I understand the Parfum version is no longer made. Luckily I have a good supply in my scent rotation. 💞

AvasBlackOrchid

I have the EdP, which is more of a creamy vanilla with a woody base, sooo nice and pretty but it becomes intimate very quickly, which might be good for someone else but I prefer my scents with a bit more of projection.
I live in the Caribbean, so, it's hot and it does smell pretty but it's delicious when it's cold, also, projection is a bit better, so, if you like sweet, intimate and live/work in a cold place you'd probably love

Isawhat

I blind bought the EDP version because I read that it was a creamy berry fragrance with a cult following and it was cheap. This perfume smells two different ways depending on whether I'm focusing on the scent or not. If I'm not purposefully smelling it then I get wisps of creamy smelling blueberry pie. A lot of people say they immediately smell strawberry in this, but I get more blueberry. However, if I'm purposefully smelling this perfume on me it 100% smells like the head of a doll. When I first read that description on several reviews below, I didn't understand. Was there a smell that doll heads had in common? If so, what was that scent? Then I smelled Hanae Mori on me and I immediately was hit with a childhood sense memory, this smelled like the heads of my dolls, go figure.

Now maybe it's because that smell is tied up with my childhood but it's not necessarily a bad smell. It smells comforting and soft. However if I give it any thought I'm slightly discomforted about the idea of going around in a perfume that reminds me of my childhood baby dolls. So it's become my bedtime scent in order to use it up. Who knew a perfume could smell like a doll's head.

loraxsix

EDP version. I wish I got the strawberry milkshake other's smell. For me, only linear headache inducing synthetic strawberry plastic. Decent longevity. I donated it away. Luckily I got it at a discount. It just seems HM's fragrances don't work with my chemistry.

FaithHopeLove

I just sampled this today, and immediately it reminded me of something I have smelled before—Boardwalk Taffy shower gel from Bath & Body Works. Maybe a little also like Pink Chiffon. It’s not bad, but if I want to smell like Bath & Body Works, I can buy their body spray for $10.

townej

I simply ADORE the EDT version! I would say this is a very feminine & comforting scent! As others have said this certainly is reminiscent of a strawberry milkshake & doll head. Now, this might sound strange and unappealing at first but you just have to try it for yourself to see what I mean because it's a very endearing combo! Especially if you're like me and also prefer the more inexpensive, underrated, big bang for your buck type of gems. Longevity is good too.

Shwets

This perfume is like creme brulee and reminds me of an oud and vanilla perfume.
Very sweet and long lasting. Has a burnt note in it so beware! This is the EDT version.

realitygreene

First wear, the strawberry and woodsy almond notes are dominant on my skin. This fragrance is so lovely for cold weather. It's comforting and cozy, but not too overpowering. This fragrance feels so me in that I picture a 30 year old woman in a cozy sweater with some black booties and a fuzzy scarf heading to work with her Creme Brulee Latte from Starbucks. I cannot wait to wear this fragrance again, it definitely deserves a spot in my cold-weather fragrance rotation.

(this review is for the EDP version - blue butterfly box)

SniffingAddict

I’ll echo Bois De Jasmin’s review that this is a French, fruit pastry with glistening glaze and mouth watering richness without being too food-like. Rich, fruity, creamy without being cloying or over powering. Soooooo gooooood.

I find layering this with Stella edt brings a delicious lemon twist to it for when you’re looking for something equally delicious, but lighter. Like turning a butter pastry into a meringue or light lemon/rose custard.

pursueliving

This is an easy-breezy, offend no-one, sweet and semi-light perfume. I enjoy this fragrance most when I'm at home - it's not real strong so if you wear it out it might not be smelled by others, yet it's not a skin scent either. It's very feminine and soft but with a little "bite." It lasted on me about 2 hours and sometimes that's good because it allows you to either layer another round or try a new scent. I was surprised how good it smelled because I wasn't expecting that from such a budget-conscious perfume. I'd rate it 8/10 and offer it to young women late grade school on up....to seniors, lol!!! (pun intended by this 62-year old) Would make a great gift to brighten someone's day.

I first learned of Hanae Mori on a blog that I was pretty obsessed with, back in the early 2000s. This person wasn’t a perfume enthusiast or fashionista, or even a popular blogger as far as I could tell...she seemed to be a gentle quiet weirdo, like me. She had a goth Betty Page bob and she did something in tech and updated sporadically about her little Seattle apartment. I thought she was the coolest. When I began to really delve into fragrances a few years later, I recall her mentioning this one in passing, and so sought out a sample. I was disappointed at how ordinary it seemed. Twenty years later I quite disagree with past me! Hanae Mori is a perfectly lovely woody vanilla and creamy, milky musk with hints of dusty dried grass and the airy green tang of blackberry leaves. A lot of reviewers mention fruit, but I don’t get any of that at all. If you enjoy the sweet comfort and nostalgic 90's whispers of Vanilla Fields or the bitter Miss Havisham melancholia of Fleur Cachee, I’d say this scent falls squarely in the middle and I am surprisingly obsessed with it.

holly_eva

This used to be my signature scent from age 18-22. I loved it but now it’s somehow less fruity and complex than I remember but that might just be me. It definitely smells of ylang ylang and also sandalwood and peony and blackberry. However, I cannot smell the strawberry even though I swear I once could. Nor can I smell the black currant so it’s not as sweet as I would hope for since I’m big on gourmands and found my memory didn’t capture it this floral. However, overall it’s a pleasing perfume with harmonizing notes and good staying power. Still underrated imho.

Duft Liebe

Strawberry cream! Somehow girly and universal useful at the same time.
Then turning into a pleasent and durable vanilla (min. 4 hours).
Well, artificial, of course. But in a nice way. Why should´nt I enjoy it ?
It is what it is, a cheapie. And a quite lovely one. An easy every day choice.
Please don´t hesitate and try it!

PS: Nothing to do with Casmir, imo. Sorry. HM is happy and fresh.

Púca

(Review for the EDP - Blue Butterfly) This perfume is soft, beautiful, and warm. It's an embrace from someone who truly loves you, or a beautiful day that makes you happy you are alive to see it. It's cute without being saccharine, but it's also elegant. I love strawberry perfumes and this perfume pulls creamy woody berry to me. However the notes aren't super separated and it all flows into one that is Hanae Mori.

anni_cola

Upon first spray of Hanae Mori EDT, I get strong alcohol which quickly turns into something sweet and slightly powdery. On my skin it stays something slightly sweet, airy, and clean, like baby wipes, and evokes Armani Si Fiori's little baby sister. Not at all as strong and sweet as Si Fiori, but captures a similar innocence in it's strawberry milkshake vibe.

Virgo92093!

Sweet creamy & slightly powdery strawberry mixed with ylang . So girly . So pretty.

amr99

Yea this is amazing… (EDP) sweet and creamy. My skin tends to eat up perfume and I still had a sweet creamy dry down that I could actually smell on myself at the end of the work day. The price is amazing…. It’s quite tropical and I think works for day or night. Sooo happy with this blind buy. Very feminine, not challenging whatsoever, a crowd pleaser. Nice for the office or weekend or vacation… it’s just very good IMO esp for the price.

emilia123

I really wanted to like this one (based on the notes). I'm a big fan of sweet/fruity scents, but this was so cloying and headache-inducing for me that I had to wash it off after 30 minutes or so.

cassiesta

I had to have this based on the amazing reviews here. I chose Pink Butterfly Eau de Toilette based off of it overall sounding like it was better than the EDP. Instantly a favorite of mine. Smoky, creamy, berries. Not too much of any one of those, these qualities all work in concert to produce Hanae Mori. It's a heavenly smell, unlike anything in my collection. It's unique, yet familiar all at the same time. It's a masterpiece and I never want to be without this in my collection. Perfect for fall, winter, and spring and even a summer night when you want depth but coziness too. Sandalwood and berries are some of my favorite notes and I love when perfumes are creamy and smoky and deep. I love that it has blueberry and blackberry, which I don't see very often, in addition to the strawberry and blackcurrant which are more common berries in perfumes. I could see a woman of any age enjoying this. I do want to try the EDP and the parfum at some point. I'm also glad I found this because Coach Poppy Freesia, a similar perfume, didn't work out. It is also said to have the dollhead smell, which I definitely get in there. I can't really say I get dollhead smell in Hanae Mori. To top it all off, I can't believe this is so cheap, about $25 for a 3.4 oz ?! It does have pretty good sillage and lasting power, but I love to douse myself with it and I can thanks to the insanely affordable price. Thank you Fragrantica for leading me to this!

purpleturtle

I sampled the EDT, sadly was gone in 20 mins. Was pretty while it lasted though. Very airy and creamy.

Mona708

I grabbed a small rollerball bottle of the EDP from Nordstrom Rack a bit earlier this year. I’d heard about this scent and wanted to try it for myself. It’s sweet and creamy without being too cloying. It’s like a more reserved version of Sweet Like Candy without the tartness. I could see this working out great as a casual work scent since it’s not too noticeable unless someone is right next to you. Due to its gentleness I would also recommend this as a first perfume for younger wearers. Once I use up my EDP rollerball, I want the pure Parfum version because of the longer longevity.

bel.gravia

Comforting, creamy, peaceful, delightful.

jasiepooh

i really like this scent and find it to be quite grounding. i imagine that the perfect person for this scent is some sort of forest nymph woman who is humble yet confident, ethereal yet knowing. the scent is quite soft, but somehow very impressionable. i find it to be sweet and creamy, and would want to hug somebody wearing this scent and lean into them forever.

one week update: just fyi this scent can be a little cloying if you use to much or waft it for too long.

kisuskan

i truly cannot sing this scent's praises enough!

i blind bought this one, which is always a risk, but i'm delighted by what it brought me. the edp ("blue butterfly") is a very sweet, creamy scent that i can't get enough of. i've seen some describe it as comforting, and i would agree that that's a good descriptor—there's something very warm and familiar about it.

i don't at all get the plastic tinge that others have complained about, but everyone's skin chemistry differs. for me, this is just a delicious powdery yet creamy edp, one which i'd definitely recommend to anyone who likes those notes.

julheart

I just received the same bottle pictured above after ordering the EDP from the Hanae Mori site - where they call it 'Butterfly', which doesn't appear on the bottle itself.

This is sweet and creamy but it works. I've read this described as upside pineapple cake and strawberry milkshake and berry shampoo - there's a sweet tanginess on first spray. Strangely I get all of that. At least at first. The dry down is creamy almond - still almost edible, but soft and feminine and SO approachable. It asks for a hug it's so nice. Over time more of the 'wood' comes in and this is where I like it most. There's certainly a vanilla-ness (despite not being listed in the notes) with almonds. Still powdery and sweet. The fruit is barely there.
Very very pretty and probably a great scent for a date.
Borders on too sweet for me but I completely respect how well it is put together.

Lalouve<3

I really don't understand why Fragrantica hasn't made different sections for the Butterfly perfumes. This one should have been for those who had the discontinued Hanae Mori perfume as the name and bottle shown here suggests.

And then we have the pink butterfly (edt) and the blue butterfly (edp) that followed and are still on sale to this day.

Both pink and blue butterfly share the same dna, BUT: what lacks in finesse in the pink butterfly which in my opinion is a jumbled flowery mess with artificial sweetness you can't really discern and is in no way gourmand, the blue edp fixes. The blue (edp) is creamy done right, it is berry and gourmand done right, it shares the butterfly dna both (and I assume the original) have, it just has these tweaks the pink needed to go in the right direction of a true more elegant gourmand.

If you are on the fence, go with the blue. If you don't like the blue I guarantee you won't like the pink, but if you have the pink and are unimpressed or feel that with some changes it would have been better and less artificial, definitely try the blue one.

You are welcome :)

I’ve consistently worn this fragrance since 1999 and have owned it in EDT, EDP, and parfum over the years. The parfum version is the most creamy and beautiful, and lacks the dolls-head sharpness that is more easily detected in the EDT and EDP. Reading the notes always confuses me so much. I’ve never smelled berries, ylang-ylang, or sandalwood in this perfume. It comes across as a rich lactonic vanilla and honey gourmand, and yes plastic depending on the potency and how it’s applied. Personally I think this is a fragrance you spray once and give it a good half hour to settle down before going out in public.

When I first wore this, I thought it was too cloying, synthetic, and mature for a teen girl but people went bonkers when they smelled it so I continued to wear it anyway. As time went by, I grew to enjoy it and always kept a bottle in my collection, mostly just to wear to bed for myself because it felt too loud and ostentatious to wear in public. Every guy I’ve dated has been powerless to its charms (even the ones who “hAtE pErFuMe”) and they considered it my signature even though I very rarely wore it. Now I’m in my 40s and still keep a bottle of the parfum on hand for those occasions where I crave its specific comforting vanillic depth, or I want a man to become obsessed with me. Either way, it always does the trick.

Review for the EDT:

What a plasticky mess.
I had high hopes for this one. Based on the reviews this was a beautiful bright vanilla scent.
I’m sorry to anyone this might offend, but to my nose, this perfume is hideous. Wasted money. I actually considered throwing this in the trash and I never do that with ANY perfume. If I don’t like a scent, I immediately consider gifting it. I simply can’t picture this sitting nice on anyone’s skin though. Smells so cheap and synthetic. I can’t smell anything else except for that extremely fake vanilla with tons of plastic on top. Awful.

Saj_Shae

The EDT is my favourite formulation even though I've only smelled the EDT and EDP. The EDT smells like a milky strawberry milkshake but the EDP smells denser and more like the middle + base notes. I'm not too fond of ylang-ylang and I smell it a lot in the EDP.

annasarahr121

Hanae Mori EDP/Blue Butterfly is lightly gourmand powdery sweetness -- almost seems like caramel -- along with vague strawberry/berry notes, almonds, and sandalwood. Soft, sweet, very well-balanced and blended, HM is an absolutely lovely perfume! It immediately struck me as having the same confectionary/dessert quality as some Guerlains (especially Apres L'Ondee and L'Heure Bleue) but is less complex and intense. It's in the same soft gourmand genre, I think, as Jessica Simpson Fancy (which has caramel and berries, but is louder than HM) and Mariah Carey M (also a bit louder, but with a sweet marshmallow and light, smoky incense, which HM does not have). It's sweet-but-not-too-sweet, gentle, ladylike, powdery, comforting, and beautifully blended. The sillage is gentle on me, so this is one I think I can overspray without danger. I'm not sure about its longevity yet, and have been spraying it on at intervals, for the last 3 hours because I'm a fan of very strong fragrances; maybe I wish HM were just a bit stronger. But it's so feminine and pretty, I've been enjoying topping it up. I can see it being an easy, everyday wear for me, perfect for any occasion. I echo ViouAmara as she put it in her excellent review of HM, "This is a great discovery for me. Not a revolution, but a true little treasure in my wardrobe." It's a new, low-key love. <3
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Update: I love Hanae Mori but I wish the longevity was better; it becomes a skin scent, for me, after about 4 hours. So it's one -- for me, at least -- to spray and re-spray, throughout the day. But so very pretty. :)

Mary23606

Smells like Pour Femme!

LadyD2021

I agree with April338. I had high hopes on this perfume based on the reviews. It just smells cheap and uninteresting. I sprayed this on 30 minutes ago and can barely smell anything now. Maybe I have a bad batch. I got the strawberry in the initial spray but it was accompanied by a strong synthetic cheap alcoholic smell. 30 minutes later all I get is a hint of almond and a lot of skin. Maybe I will spray again after my shower tonight and wear to bed and hopefully have a better review.

April338

This scent is boring. I can’t explain what im smelling im not getting any of the berries just wierd woods and vanilla. Maybe I’ve got a bad bottle. Worst $28 dollars I’ve ever spent I wish I could get my money back. I’ve got to stop listening to youtubers opinions and descriptions of perfumes. Im done blind buying.

wuttabrat

this is for the EDP
i’m def picking up on the ylang and strawberry.. in a tangy sour kinda way. and the creaminess of the sandalwood is definitely present, giving off a powdery kind of finish. the powder and fruits combined do give off a dry shampoo or deodorant kinda smell. i’m not getting much gourmand.. maybe i just have to spend some more time with this... i like it but i’m not in love.
will edit when i have spent more time with this. 💕

Enchanted77

Hanai Mori is a soft, sweet fragrance that is my go to before bed because I find it to have such a comforting effect that helps my mind to calm and slow down

xyrildeleon

Is it just my bottle? This smell reminds me of Dove powder soft deodorant spray.

CreamSunshine

I risked getting a bottle of this from eBay as the “blue butterfly” Hanae Mori because it sounded safe from previous reviews, and it’s inexpensive enough to take a chance. Sadly, this was a blind-buy fail for me.

I cannot tolerate the scent of freesia. It always makes me feel nauseous when it’s in a fragrance. I know it’s not listed in the notes here, but I still smell it. This fragrance is like a combination of freesia, plastic, and vanilla to me.

ViouAmara

I’m not a child anymore, and this for quite a long time. So it can be difficult to find a sweet fragrance that suit my mood, my taste and even my mindset. Most of them are too flat, too candi like or suffer from a severe addition of « mature » (?!) patchouli, benzoin or spices. Or musks, and most of the time I can’t smell the musk more than 5 minutes on myself. Guerlain and its sweet-vanilla-iris guerlinade is of course a good option, but what else? The answer could be Hanae Mori. This has a serious fruity taste, with a mild woody base, just multidimensional enough to capture the attention. Not too heavy, not too light. Clean but not ethereal, intense but not intoxicating. Assertive but not agressive, cosy but not boring. It could please anyone at any age. This is a great discovery for me. Not a revolution, but a true little treasure in my wardrobe.

Edit : So mild that it smells like a « sweet compromise ». I wear it when we are under pressure at work or if something is frightening me. Everybody like it. But I can’t believe there is no heliotrope and tonka notes in it.

I don't get gourmand on the skin with this one. This is pleasantly soap-like, clean and not at all edible.
Actually it's a very nostalgic 90's scent, chances are you've smelled this before once in your life :)

On me this opens up with a late 90's toy bubbles scent (in a much more refined way), and gradually becomes more woody & semi-sweet. I do get the berries in the opening, but it's more tart berry soap instead of juice or the actual fruit itself. The dry-down smells like dolls from the 90s!

The moment I smelled this: ''ah another perfect office scent''. 'Hanae Mori' is smoothly blended, inoffensive yet still feminine without enticing others with seduction.
It's one of those delicious shampoo-like perfumes that are perfect for any job actually and for ANY age!

Phemia

My immediate reaction upon smelling this was "Wow, that's lovely" Despite there not being any listed vanilla notes, I do pick up a lot on vanilla. It's not overly fruity but I do find that it gets more fruity in the middle of the dry down. The initial spray is sweet jasmine with berries in the background. As it dries, the berries come forward and then after a while they melt down to give way to a wonderfully warm, creamy vanilla and jasmine. The wood notes are there but muted, just lingering in a way that grounds the sweet, cake-like gourmand aspects. Somehow this fragrance manages to blend all of its notes in such a way that none of them clash with each other yet all remain distinct enough to take your nose on a beautiful ride. It's soft and inoffensive, sweet but clean and not cloying, warm but delicate enough for year round, feminine and pretty but with a matured roundness that makes this safe for young women, mature ladies, and everyone in between. It wont become a signature scent for me as I prefer edgier or sexier fragrances but I'll be keeping this around for those days I just want to smell girly and pretty.

I have loved Hanae Mori since the first time I snuck a spray in my boss's house. Twenty-five years later, and still I swoon. Firmly on my list of personal favorites, this also remains on the top of a list of dazzling scents that have been seriously underestimated, and will probably, and tragically, only achieve cult status posthumously. This perfume, once my signature scent, smells like the woman I always envisioned I should be, as I approached my twenties: Sweet and warm, strong and resilient, and ever so wonderfully composed, graceful like a lady. The fragrance had better success at achieving such virtuosity. I, on the other hand, struggled gaining any such refinements, and relegated myself to the reality of breaking gender barriers in various male dominated professions. Such began a woman's clumsy, and often unbalanced, attempt at shattering glass ceilings, while making it home in time to scrub floors. As a single mom, this also gave access to exhibiting both roles in parenting, and the freedom to express myself using any facet of voice from a spectrum that, so often, surrenders itself ultimately to the confines of nuclear-family norms, and role expectations. I say this all to emphasize again, how absolutely beautiful this perfume is, and despite a relatively heavy nod to femininity, smells fantastic on men alike. By in large the scent is woody in nature, but the kind of fiber that has been weathered soft; smoothed over its lifetime with friction, leaving its scent supple, and deeply warm. Sweetness develops with berry notes, balanced by their inherent tartness; macerated placidly with a touch of sugar and a radiant summer sun. There doesn't seem to be any real discernment in both woody or fruity notes, and not for one moment is Hanae lacking for it. Floral elements follow suit, devoid of a division between each specie. Possessing instead a common rhythm. Beating through the heart percussively, audible against the chest embracing you, while your own pulse slows to compensate. To be comforted so completely by a seemingly innocuous moment; the tender shared encounters, in turn manifesting the same characteristics in ourselves. That is what this perfume conjures for me. It reminds me to exist softly in my sanctum, and relate considerately towards others. It benevolently nudges me to be a better, kinder person. So maybe I was right to love this perfume all along. I suppose in the end, it gave exactly what I wished for, ever reminding me to shed complacency, and maintain the ambitions of love, tolerance, and a sound resilience to continue to reach for grace.

As a recent convert to Lavender I had to part with this lovely butterfly and set her free to a fellow member.

I'll give it a fair revision from my first review; if we are paying attention to Pink Sugar Aquolina and Flowerbomb by Viktor & Rolf we are seeing that these three fragrances even though similiar in composition very different in the wear.

I only name the other two as a reference; but of course Hanae Mori is a very signature scent from the 90's; It is a WONDERFUL entry level scent to wear.

The first spray is fresh and juicy; and the acidity blends in well with the creaminess and yes you do start taking after a fruit tart at the beginning. Strippers wearing this one have given 'tart' its other context but I do digress.

As the scent drys and develops on the skin, its starts to take on it's woodiness. This is exactly why it's a great starter fragrance: young women are drawn to sweet but do not have palettes developed yet for earthier and woodier fragrances that are meant for older women; this one gives a preview. From the jasmine, ylang-ylang, rose, peony and cedarwood.

Not saying that older women should not wear or buy; it's very good for its playfulness in nature and it sits and warms and you start to feel its refinement. Truly is an interesting experience from girlhood to womanhood. Women in their 40's today were in their teens/twenties in this time and probably feel that wistful nostalgia with this scent. With age it has retained its original purpose and took on another from each generation.

Folks, this is a really (really) pretty sweet fruity vanilla floral.

As I understand this fragrance, it comes in 3 different formats; EDT = "Pink Butterfly" (due to the colors on the box), EDP = "Blue Butterfly," and there is also a pure parfum 1 oz version.

I'm familiar with the EDP/Blue Butterfly. I had this back in the late 90s. It was ahead of the trend for very sweet vanillic fruity scents that was about to take over the perfume market in the early 00's. I had a bottle and used it up way back then and soon became a fragnerd/collector and promptly forgot about it because it wasn't niche/exclusive enough... Anyway, that was my mistake... about a year ago I was thinking of this strawberry-vanilla-floral milkshake that I used to love and promptly bought a bottle for about $25-30. I mean, it's still really pretty and I still love it. It reminds me of Viva La Juicy Gold Couture (for a point of reference) but I like it tons better because it's slightly more delicate and airy. Also the bottle is beautiful and elegant and not ugly like those Juicy Couture horrors. Also, yes, it definitely also reminds me of Micallef Ylang in Gold. The ylang note does give it that banana-fruity tropical vibe. It is highly synthetic, as you might guess, but just thought I’d mention it.

Honestly this is such a 'no brainer' pretty, delicate, little fruity vanilla number. It is impossible for those around you not to love the way this smells and I also love smelling this on myself. For an inexpensive flirty feminine fruity vanilla you can't go wrong 10/10. (The longevity is still decent -- it used to be a bit of a sillage monster and it's less so now but I would still rate it as moderate).

I'm now wondering if I 'need' to get the pure parfum 1 oz.... I don't wear this type of extremely sweet (and let's be honest, very tween-20's vibe often) but when I feel like it, this really hits the spot.

I have reviewed this before but I am doing it again. This perfume is a big love for me and it's way better than Casmir and Ylang in Gold, which smells identical to Casmir. There is something about this one that is my true love. I used to douse myself with it in the oughts at Sephora. I couldn't afford a bottle then. I was so shocked at what a cheapie it has become. Anyway I think it deserves more love and admiration. The only flaw about it for me is it's not strong enough. I have the EDP the EDT and the parfum and they all fade away too fast for me.

foreverine

I know that this perfume is inexpensive. But I contemplated quite a while and read your reviews before purchasing it. So, after reading a lot of pros and cons, I decided to hit the purchase button.

So, what I think about the perfume is that the first spritz smells alcoholic which is followed by a very nice tender fruity smell. I really enjoyed smelling berries, be it on in my smoothie or on anyone's skin. It is such a delight. Soon enough, the berries smell dissipates and I end up with this plasticky smell which I actually enjoyed. It reminded me of childhood, opening boxes of dolls my father brought back from his business trips.

But then, after 20 minutes, the smell disappears entirely from my skin which annoys me. So lasting power on my skin is almost nonexistent. I haven't tried spraying it on my clothes, but I think I will not do that. Just because I don't spray perfumes on clothes. Now I am stuck with a perfume that does not perform at all.

This is still a nice soft juvenile smell, a great departure from my "TF's White Patchouli" days. So, I think I am going to give it to my 5 y.o. girl who enjoys spraying herself with my mature perfumes.

Krista

I have the EDT for this. It honestly just smells like blueberry-blackberry jam, quite a sweet scent. I see the similarities with Ylang in Gold, but without the aromatic notes and far less vanillic in the drydown, and far more immature compared to Ylang in Gold. It is quite a whimsical scent, not offensive, but I wouldn't wear this to office, I just enjoy wearing it around the house.
Lasting power is 4-5 hours, so pretty good for EDT.
Edit: Previously I did not smell any plastic scent, but after a while I have started to pick it up quite a bit. I don't find the fragrance as pleasant as I used to when I first got it.

nandalyne

If you are sick and tired of trying new releases that smell all the same (I am looking at you, Voce Viva and all the LVEB flankers!), just give this a shot. You will at least find something that is sweet and different from mainstream. I will join the majority in admiting that Hanae Mori - this is for the EDP, by the way - has indeed a synthetic accord but I don't find it repulsive at all! On the contrary, I find it interesting and scrumptious, just like smelling my dolls' head back in the 90's. You can definitely smell the berries and their tartness in the opening. The drydown, however, is much softer and delicious, with gourmand and woodsy vibes combined in the most harmonic way. I don't have enough words to express my love for this, really. It has become one of my signature scents that I will always reach out to and that I hope will never be discontinued. *fingers crossed!* 🤞🏻

bigmoneyburt

I have the EDP and it smells like the 90's. To me, it reminds me of the dry shampoo my mom had when I was a kid. For that reason alone, I like it. It is powdery, but in a mature way and is a good out of the shower/bedtime scent. I probably would be in different to it if I didn't have memories associated with it.

Nynon

I totally do not get the creamy strawberry notes in this. I have the EDP (blue box).
On my skin it's powder on top of a plastic doll smell. A big no.

s2jkbrad

I really enjoy this. I think it’s pretty different than a lot of perfumes & I find myself reaching for it. There is a plasticky or very bright green, slightly aldehyde-nic note to it, but it is quite pleasing and a sophisticated fresh.

Hanae Mori edp (blue butterfly box)

Lord hammercy! This thing is a powder bomb with a hint of undetectable fruit/sweetness. Smells like a child's playset body spray from toys r us. It must have a hell of a longevity because I tried to scrub it off with hot water and peppermint soap and I can't get it off me. Ack. That's all I have to say about this.

taylorcake1

This is a review for the EDP (blue butterfly)

When I was in my late teens my best friend and I would frequent Sephora and annoy the workers by getting a ton of perfume samples that we never intended to buy. We were broke as heck lol. This one always hit me different. I would look at the bottle, smell it, get samples, dream of buying it... but at the time it was out of my price range. I think I remember back then (10 years ago) it was $60ish? I almost purchased multiple times but never did. Now at 28 it’s super affordable and it’s finally mine!!
It’s sweet, a dash of vanilla, kinda lactonic, soft woods, gentile berries. I can totally smell the strawberry milkshake vibes. There’s a reason I loved this one so much. At first spray I had a huge smile on my face, it’s just dreamy and cloudy. Understated but present. I could see a lot of people loving this.
It smells like a good daytime scent for work or errands. I’m a hair stylist and I feel this would be inoffensive for my clients while they are getting their hair done. Blue butterfly is so relaxing. I’d love for people to think of me when they smell this. Safe and easy reach. I imagine this being a good gift if you want to buy someone a fragrance but don’t know what notes they like. It’s perfect.
Love love love her. 🦋

This review is for Hanae Mori EDT.

This was a blind buy, based entirely on my trust and hope in the strawberry note everyone writes about. Maybe that's the case with the EDP, but I smell no strawberries in the EDT. No doll head smell either.

Upon spraying this scent for the first time, I was immediately reminded of Marina De Bourbon the original fragrance which I used to own many years ago. As I remember it, it was a sweet peachy, oriental vanilla which I enjoyed. Hanae Mori edt is also peachy. (How come there's no peach listed?) Softly oriental vanilla tempered with ylang ylang with a sandalwood drydrown.

Another fragrance that comes to mind is Possess by Oriflame which I currently own and love. That one has pineapple instead of peach, but the combination of ripe fruit, ylang ylang, vanilla and sandalwood reminds me strongly of Hanae Mori edt.

And I'm sure there are other 80s or early 90s powerhouse fragrances that this one drew its inspiration from.

Hanae Mori edt smells like any of the above mentioned fragrances on the next day, what is left lingering in the clothes. It's stripped down, milder, not as big, and frankly not as impressive. It's pleasant enough for me to wear, but I guess I had my heart set on that darn strawberry note that never showed up. *sulk*

Fleurie20

Mine is the parfums version, not EDT, not EDP and thus the staying power and sillage are absolutely insane! I just sprayed half a spray in the air and waved my hand across the mist and now it feels like I have showered, shampooed, lotioned and perfumed all in this particular scent.

On me it has that granny vibe to it. Creamy, powdery to the extreme. Think of those face powder your grandma used or in my case it also reminds me of those room sprays in my home country in the 1990s.

Not really my cup of tea but I can see many would love it. Very good value for the kind of longevity and sillage it has.

AlexandraM19

Strawberry, caramel, vanilla. Got this as a gift (by request) but I live in South Florida so it’s rarely cold enough for me to feel comfortable wearing it. I think if you’re confident wearing full-bodied gourmands you would like this. It’s a lot, for me. The best part is the creamy sensual base.

Be careful with the bottle, btw. The cap is glass and not secure to the bottle so it is easy to knock over and shatter.

s2jkbrad

Sweet, pretty and berries but not cheap smelling or overly complicated. This would layer nicely with a berry lotion or a vanilla. This could suit many ages groups of women, as it’s not overly sweet but it is just a real fresh sweetness. It reminds me a bit of the same genre of perfume as Mon Premier Lolita L.

Petrichor31

I own the EDT and reach for it a lot lately. I love how the wood & berry notes blend together in this fragrance. I don't smell the sweetness as much as a dry woodiness in this. It reminds me of a hot, dry, wood sauna. I mostly wear it at home as a comfort scent on cold winter days.
I enjoy layering it with TBS strawberry hand lotion to accentuate the berries. I also like to layer it with Prada Candy Kiss to mix the notes of wood with fresh cotton. The longevity is is only 2-3 hours on me so I need to reapply it at least 2 times a day.

Joani_Cheddar

Eau De Parfum. What is this ...velvet? Creamy delightful blackberry wonder! I love it. I am so glad I picked this up at a whim - it is sandalwood supreme. Dont hesitate to blind buy - a berry smooth crowd pleaser.

Mc1995

It’s so pretty! Not a edgy powerhouse or a typical fruity patchouli, however still very versatile and pleasing, not offensive. It’s very sweet but still unique smelling to me. Sandalwood is such a beautiful fragrance, and the strawberry and other fruits in this are very fluffy and dessert like. Still soft though unless you overspray. It’s not
Listed but I swear this has musk as a note, or else it just comes off as a soft musky scent. Very good value online too. If you like sweet and pretty scents that aren’t worn or hyped by everyone today, try this one. Underrated but I suppose it’s not everyone’s type.

fyetan

I own the EDT and tried it side by side with the EDP.

EDT: definitely a brighter, sharper fruit (strawberries & berries) on top of a heady vanilla combo. Not straight up vanilla extract, but a unique vanilla sandalwood blend. Winter scent, otherwise it can be a little nauseating.

EDP: more muted, even though it's stronger it's not as noticeable since the emphasis is on the rounded vanilla and not the fruits. Still the same vibe though.

sarahherbs

So I have a love-hate relationship with this fragrance. The flouncy part of me loves how girly and sweet this is. I imagine laying on my stomach penning notes to my lover using hearts to dot my i's. While the grown-up in me can't escape the myriad descriptions of this smelling like a stripper. This is a very sweet oriental vanilla with a healthy dose of berries rolled in sugar. It gets a little sweeter and more powdery as it warms up, but it's a fairly linear scent. I will say that HM pioneered the vanilla oriental trend that pervades the market. This is the sugar plum fairy of perfumes. I personally like the No 4 flanker a little better than the original.

PurrParfumFan

I have the Parfum (not EDP or EDT) concentration, and this is love at first sniff.
I just get a very strong vanilla/woody vibe from this.
To be frank, it is a beautiful fragrance.
I hope this remains available

[This review is for the EDP purchased around 2014]

I first came across Hanae Mori at a Sephora in Vegas, when I was in my late teens. The fragrance was still relatively new, and I remember desperately wanting a bottle but it was wildly out of my price range. I remembered the scent and purchased it over a decade later, and I’m pleased that it smells as I remember. Even now, revisiting the scent 6 years later, it still wears on me wonderfully.

On me, this is forest berries (mostly blackcurrant) and vanilla almond cream. It is decidedly a gourmand to my nose, with no discernible woody or floral notes. However, the sandalwood and ylang ylang give the sweetness a dry quality that keeps it from becoming cloying. I have a hard time saying this is strawberry as it lacks the tartness that I associate with the fruit. Mostly, it is sweet, jammy, and a little musky, hence the blackcurrant. This comes off as fairly linear on me, as it stays in this cozy almond berry stage for quite some time. It smells edible, but thankfully not of baked goods or candy, just of something sweet and lovely in the air. With a light hand, I don’t smell any of the plastic that other reviewers mentioned, but I’ve found that scent develops differently depending on how much is applied.

For me, this is quite a strong scent. A light spritz from more than 12 inches away on the lower body still envelops me in a cloud of sweetness. I am quite sensitive to synthetic fragrances these days and can only wear them cautiously, but this works despite being fairly intense. Because it is strong and feels quite cozy, it is a cool weather scent to me, but also lovely worn to bed.

HM Butterfly reminds me of an 18 year old Japanese girl, on the cusp of adulthood. She is poised, refined, but still girlish and full of exuberance. She wears her hair long and straight with a barrette over one ear and just a dab of perfume, just enough to leave the scent of strawberry almond in the air.

perfumeproblem777

This scent is so comforting for me. How have I not written a review before now?? I've owned and loved this for about 4 years now. I have the EDP.
Berries and sandalwood are the opening. Dries down to a lovely almond-y, creamy vanilla and lasts all day on me. If I am feeling particularly anxious or stressed, a spray of this gets my heartbeat dropped and my breathing calmed. I will be devastated if I run out of this potion.

trenda97

I think I ruined the scent of this perfume due to reading through the reviews. All I smell is exactly what most people have said, which is plastic strawberry scented toys from childhood. Once I had the perfume in my hands, all I could think was "well let's hope it doesn't smell like strawberry plastic" and yep that's all I got. Don't get me wrong, I love the smell of those old scented toys, but I really don't wanna smell like one. I know people around me say I smell nice but it's just not very pleasing to me. I wish I could be able to smell that yummy strawberry shake & experience the delicious creaminess of the perfume that people keep talking about. Even after saying all of this though, I think I'll keep it. Maybe I'll be in love with it one day. That's usually how I am with perfumes that I blind buy. Btw I have the pink butterfly bottle (EDT).

Rozalina

This is quite similar to Casmir by Chopard in the initial spray, but it dries down to a creamy strawberry, and thank goodness for that because try as I might, I really cannot stand something about Casmir! Somehow the strawberry milkshake accord in Hanae Mori works a lot better with whatever that oriental vanilla combination is than the peach tart accord in Casmir, which makes me a bit queasy. I'm a little surprised that vanilla isn't listed as a note, because it's definitely present here. This is one of my favorite perfume bottles, btw, it's beautiful. The pictures don't do it justice, this is definitely one to display on your vanity.
Hanae Mori EDP isn't a love for me, but it's a like.

edit: I have the bottle with the pink butterflies.

brightflashes

I'm reviewing the blue butterfly bottle (the EDP).

Four berries on top, four florals in the middle, and a woodsy base makes this a perfume that should be pretty straightforward in the way it will unfurl.

Wet I smell the berries with some background noise. As it dries down, the perfume becomes a bit more complicated but never too sweet for my tastes. What's interesting about this perfume and its composition to me is that the berries never really stop taking first place in the dry down. Yes, there are other notes and they're detectable, but the berries are what makes the scent.

I wouldn't say I love it or that it's particularly lovely, but I'm not going to get rid of my bottle any time soon because this is major "like". I'm imagining that me and my 13 y/o will share this. Great perfume at the price and the performance is awesome!

When I saw the mentions of this possibly having Vanilla in it, I was really nervous to try it out, but I am not having one of my signature "vanilla reactions", so that's a relief (not saying it's not in there; just that I cannot tell through my sense of smell or my typical response to vanilla).

KayleeAp

I bought the blue butterfly bottle as I love light, sweet scents, and the idea of strawberry delighted me. I must be anosmic to that note because unfortunately I don’t smell it at all. It’s hard for me to pick out any particular notes in this one. I don’t think this perfume will offend anyone, and could see how it is mass appealing, however this one isn’t to my taste.

avmist

I smell a LOT of sandalwood. This is very reminiscent of the sandalwood incense that my mom has burned when I was growing up (and even today); if you grew up in an Indian household, you know what I'm talking about. I remember walking into my mother-in-law's house and thinking "is that Hanae Mori?" No, of course not, it's just the incense.

I smell a faint bit of strawberry, but it's overtaken by that strong aforementioned sandalwood aroma. Personally for me, I love this fragrance but would use it more as a room scent, since this reminds me so much of that sandalwood incense in the room

DieT CroaK

Yeah, the hype about this one is pretty legit. This really smells so sweet but it’s not nauseatingly sweet or too thick. This kinda reminds me of VS Strawberries and Champagne from back in the day. However, this is no linear, ubiquitous, spray it and forget it type of scent. While its most prominent note is indeed strawberry, you can definitely pick up the creaminess of it (almond, powdery, vanilla). I don’t really get the woody notes. Maybe those will come through better during the fall and winter months. The butterfly is befitting of this perfume because it smells very young and vibrant but I feel like all age groups can wear this and be happy with it. It’s definitely a “safe” fragrance. I can’t imagine that too many people would find it offensive and overpowering. As basic as it sounds on paper, all the notes come together to create something unique and memorable.

This perfume debuted in the late 90’s so it’s most definitely been reformulated. If anyone can shed some light on the reformulation of this fragrance ,that would be much appreciated. I have a bottle of the painted, two toned pink butterfly box that is depicted in the pictures above. Researching this actually gave me a headache because I was unable to tell if the gilded gold and pink box was the original design or what was depicted here. My bottle has 83% volume whereas the gilded pink box has 80% volume. Again, I tried my darndest to research the whole % volume issue and got no definitive explanation. Just to be clear, I am comparing two EDT 3.4 oz bottles. Is the concentration heavier in 80% or in the 83% volume? Does that affect the longevity and wear time of a fragrance? Is it the same with the EDP? On me, this lasts about 4-5 hours.

Edit: Even though my box clearly states 82% volume, the base of the bottle reads as 80% volume. The box came sealed so I don’t think the bottles were switched... really confusing.

876Beauty

A very creamy powdery slightly plastic (in a good way) Sandal woodsy vanilla...There's a slight bubblegum scent in the dry down which reminds me of my Armaf Italiano Donna...This is a LOVE for me...warm and cuddly for sure!!

This review is for the Blue Butterfly EDP

Saira.Manahil

Ohhh she’s a pretty one, a fluffy whipped strawberry scent. It’s hard to come by a good strawberry note, often the scent is synthetic and sickly, but in Hanae Mori’s Butterfly the strawberry is so light and airy, it’s a feel-good fragrance forsure. It really does resemble a butterfly that floats effortlessly through the air, lithe and carefree, with translucent wings that dance across a summer’s breeze. This is a quiet fragrance that sits close to the skin, but it has great longevity. And the best part is that this perfume is super duper affordable!

(Blue butterfly EDP)

Dabarefootbombshell

I have had this scent in my collection from about 1998. I buy the EDT and EDP and they are not identical. I love them both but the EDT is a bit more almondy than the EDP in my opinion. This scent smells edible to me so I put this in my gourmand category of scents. I like to layer this with Chocolate body oil and it smelled like chocolate covered cherries. Yum!

churinl

This is so removed from what I usually like in fragrances. Strawberry? Really? Not a chance. Or so I thought.
I received three spray samples of the EDT in an order I placed for something else. I gave it a try and... I like it! I think it's well done for what it is, and as others have pointed out, there is a woodsy note that keeps things from zooming into cloying territory. That said, it's still very sweet, and I find nothing about it to be oriental. It's a fruity gourmand. I doubt I'll purchase a bottle even though it's very affordable, but I will use my samples, and I am glad I had the opportunity to try it.

maruchiniku

This perfume seems to be popular here but not in real life. I rarely smell it on other people. And I'm afraid that it will be discontinued one day because of that. Funny cause I get compliments with this fragrance.

It is described as an oriental fragrance but for me it's rather a gourmand one. Yeah it is sweet and one of the most delicious scents I've ever smelled.

The scent is really unique, I've never smelled anything like this before. And this what I'm looking for in a perfume.

I love berries/strawberry scents and this one will not disappoint you. It has a strawberry vanilla woodsy vibe ! YUMMY YUMMY !

ONE TIP : Yesterday I layered HANAE MORI butterfly over PINK SUGAR from AQUALINA and OH MY GOSHH !!!!! Since Pink Sugar has berries and strawberry in its composition, it makes it even more delicious and the strawberry note is amplified. TRUST ME JUST TRY IT !

All the concentrations of the perfume are beautiful but the EDT seems to be fruitier

stacia79

This won't be a popular review because I really did not care for this one. It doesn't really smell like any of these listed notes, it just comes off kinda... powdery and syrupy all at the same time. A dusty vanilla maybe. I wore a sample to my friend's house and he complained that the smell lingered on his sofa for days. Oooops! Well, it lasts so if you do like it, there is that.

mychinarose

Hanae Mori was released in 1996...so if anything smells like it, just remember what came first.

Fuchsianlavender

Review for the EDT (pink butterfly). Like other reviewer mentioned it smells like powdery strawberry candy but to me, it is quite woodsy too. It is nice smelling perfume and the sweetness is not juvenile sweetness. I bought it because I want strawberry perfume in my collection and something from the 90s because I was born in the 90s

missjudged

This smells just like Si Fiori. I think it's the black currant note. It's a very pleasant, powdery fruity makeup smell. I think this is a legit dupe.

Balletflowers

About 5yrs ago, I purchased a fragrance from Macy’s & they included a sample vial of this. I’ve never heard of it before, I tested it & wore it to work for about a week until the vial was done. I got so many compliments in the office, especially from men. My mom who is very picky with scents loved it too. I immediately purchased a full bottle & it’s still one of my favs. It’s a warm, cozy floral vanilla scent, though I don’t see vanilla listed in the notes? Bonus is that is has amazing siliage/projection & lasting power. Literally one spritz and the entire room can smell it, lasts all day. Definitely a beast mode fragrance ;)

thecoffeeslayer

For EDP (Blue Butterflies), this is strawberry shortcake (more like the doll's fragrance than the dessert) and yuzu buttercream frosting underneath. This is densely sugary, I cannot detect any woods (but, I am nose blind to sandalwood), beyond the almond milk vibe that serves to make a thickness to the sweet berry frosting. The strawberry falls second to the huckleberry after the first hour.

This goes full gourmand, with nothing to tame it, when on me. The whole experience is somewhere between a candy booth at a carnival, a pastry shop, and a candle store (in a good way). I had a friend who wore this when I was in college. It reminds me of her & our antics. That said, it makes me feel old to wear it. Funny that.

This lasts about 8 hours on me.

I got a really good deal on this on Ebay- $25! What I got was “Butterfly” EDT. Anyway this is a longtime love though I never had an FB before.. I used to just douse myself when I was in shops (Sephora I’m prerty sure) that carried it in NY about 14 years ago.. I am obsessed with this scent and can’t get enough. I want to eat it and want it to stick on me- unfortunately the sillage is weak and it fades to nothing on my skin in 1 hour. So I’ve ordered both the EDP and the P and am hoping for some serious sillage!! I personally don’t know what all the notes are- I don’t detect currants or ylang- bizarre! Just the most gourmand frag ever and yes, with some dolls’ head smell thrown in.. Will update later
My EDP has arrived and I am pleased to report that sillage and longevity are better! The liquid is much more golden as well. I love this scent so much it’s ruining my will to test other frags.. I’m strung out on it!
Still completely obsessed with this scent- in which I am unable to detect any thing in particular- just the composition. I can’t smell sandalwood either as some do but possibly can imagine I’m smelling almond wood. I just wanted to add one more note on this because I was reading others’ reviews and saw that many people have a problem with the EDP! So in my opinion they are quite identical. If anything the EDP has a bit more dollhead smell which is a positive in my book! I am just completely mindblown by how much I love this scent and always have. Can’t wait till my parfum arrives- thinking that it will stick better on my skin which devours the EDT. At least those are both good for spraying on clothes, and the scent lingers for sure. If anyone, also, could explain how it is possible for fancy scents to be available on Ebay for about $21 when they are more like $120 in Nordstrom I would be most grateful. I have found many authentic perfumes there for super cheap, new!
I just wanted to add- my parfum has arrived but it isn’t much different in sillage for me. They all last about an hour and I’m super bummed about it. I just wanted to report that to contradict others who say this is beast mode- it isn’t imo.

xNICOLAx from what I understand the Hanai Mori with blue butterflies on the box is the EDP and the pink butterfly box is the EDT. I had the blue EDP forever ago and absolutely loved it. Very sweet, creamy, honey notes. Considering rebuying the blue EDP again from Amazon as I’d love to try it again and it would absolutely take me back in time!

Plastic doll heads on steroids. Very outdated...

FragHag01

I got a sample of this from Nordstrom. Never smelled it before but loved it when i tried and looked into buying possibly. Then low and behold I was scouring the Nordstrom Rack fragrances and found it - only $19.99! I really enjoy this scent. I was drawn to it because it makes me feel happy. the opening is a burst of sweetness - lemon meringue pie! No sharpness - smooth and creamy. Linear fragrance holds up well. Long lasting - didn’t think it would be given the soft creaminess. I didn’t douse myself so it didn’t project much. I wanted to wear as a skin scent. I kept smelling the crook of my arm. Yummy scent.

While I'm not huge on very sweet scents- not because I dislike them, but because they give me the feeling of having eaten one too many slices of birthday cake- this is a long time love. Ylang, vanilla, sandalwood and an impression of berries make up this chorus. Hanae Mori mingles sweetness with warm, silken woods, subtle florals and near-tangy fruit. It's my perfect sweet scent: a yellow, woody floral that's delicious, cozy, and alluring.

This was a blind buy for me and honestly, at first spray I was not sure I should have gone through with the purchase. When I first spray this, it smells exactly like turkish delight. It is a really strong opening. After a few minutes, I get the fruity plastic smell others have mentioned. This is a very powdery scent on my skin and I am not usually a fan of powdery smells. The entire beginning of this was just overall unpleasant for me.

But then it dried down and it's all sandalwood and ylang ylang. It became so sweet and delicious and I could not stop smelling myself. It was really intoxicating. My boyfriend said I smelled like a dessert. The longer it was on the more I loved it. I am actually glad it was a blind buy because if I had smelled this in a store, I would have never bough it and now I can tell it will be one of my favorites.

My review is for the EDP (blue butterflies). This does indeed smell incredibly like Chopard Casmir! Which is why I LOVE it! 😍

It does start off ever so slightly fruitier and yes it is strawberry. It’s a bit lighter than Casmir but soooooo yummy. Not sure of longevity yet as I’ve only just sprayed it. I’ll update later.

If you like Casmir you’ll like this BUT not quite sure you’ll need both. Casmir is a bit cheaper so if it comes down to cost I’d go for that. Very happy with my purchase and it’s all due to the reviews of you wonderful people. X

DebiL1211

Lovely fruity floral fragrance. I smell a lot of the strawberry and the floral notes. I thought this was butterfly when I received it from scentbox but nonetheless it is beautiful. Just beware. This is the EDT and not the EDP. The EDP isn't as sweet as the EDT.

BrunetteDoll

Sweet fuzzy peach!

Thers a strawberry in here apparently, but all I smell is peachess and sweet whipped cream on top.
I have EDT and projection is soft. I will get wafts of it here and there and daydream away to a fairy land.

This is very girly! It smells like all things girls have in "that drawer" we store everything we don't need in but it s just way cute to toss away.

That being said Hanae Mori has a very welcoming and comforting personality. And that's why I fell in love.

(Unless you dislike fruity scents this is safe):)

Phantomias

A sweet fruit cocktail of a fragrance! Rather intense opening of generic fruits - supposed to be strawberries but I get pineapple instead. If romance anime had a scent, this would be it. Girly! The fruit takes on a synthetic quality after a while, making the opening the best part of HM.
HM has that sticky syrup thing going on, and I'm not sure if that's good. Sillage and longevity are good. I'll have to give this perfume some time to develop, see how it does in warm vs. cool weather.

stephdray

Strawberry shortcake perfume with excellent longevity and sillage.

This opened up with a blast of berry. Husband said he could smell it all the way on the other side of the room and that he found it synthetically sweet. But up close it was soft. It developed into a creamier scent, then dried down to a vanilla skin-scent. Like pretty much every other perfume these days so it didn't seem that special to me.

I don't want to diss anyone's fav, but in the end, this seems almost like a confectionary fragrance. And when I want to make a statement, a baked good isn't what I want to say.

This perfume would be excellent I think for teens; probably an office-safe scent too.

lmwimsatt

This is a nice blueberry almond version of cashmere. It does kind of remind me of purple butterfly

eamaccready

I didn't like this on the first try, but I don't think I really gave it much of a chance past the opening. I tried it again and now I really enjoy it after letting it settle down and keeping an open mind. (raspberry and strawberry notes can often go weird and bad on me). I definitely get the creamy/lactonic plastic vanilla strawberry vibe this time. It's very sweet but not annoyingly so (I tend to only like a few gourmands). I find it youthful but not immature (probably with the strawberry and plastic doll head smells), and it's very comforting. It kind of reminds me of wearing a cozy sweater as a kid drinking strawberry milk and playing with barbies, etc. but also a bit more adult and sophisticated with the woods in the base. I'm glad I gave it another chance. I definitely need to be in the right mood to wear it, and it's more of a cozy home scent, but I'm really enjoying it!

Blue_Lilac

This review is for the EDP (Blue Butterflies).

I’ve definitely smelled this before on other people, but never knew what perfume it was. I blind bought a bottle mainly because I read some reviews claiming it had that plastic Barbie baby doll smell, which I love and am always seeking out perfumes that encapsulate that scent. So far I haven’t found the perfect match, but this is close. There is something sharp here, it may be the blackberry and black currant, that detracts from that baby doll plasticy powder scent. Nevertheless, I like this perfume. I would love it if it wasn’t a skin scent on me and had better sillage. I feel I have a weak sense of smell so I really need a sillage bomb to feel satisfied. This is a cheapie so I feel no guilt in dousing myself.

The first spray is a bit too chemical smelling, but it quickly dies down and morphs into a nice creamy yet powdery sandalwood scent. I don’t pick up on strawberries like some other reviewers note, or well, I should say it doesn’t smell like natural strawberries. A previous reviewer said it was like a strawberry milkshake in a plastic cup and I agree for the most part. I get the plastic (which isn’t a bad thing, it’s that baby doll head plastic) and the “strawberry” here is more in the way strawberry ice cream smells, artificial, lactonic and creamy. Not the real deal, and I prefer it that way. I love creamy strawberry ice cream! I’ve had the classic strawberry ice cream with the chunks of actual frozen strawberries and I’ve had smooth creamy soft serve type of strawberry ice cream without the fruit chunks, this perfume is in the style of the former. There is a tang to it. I just wish this perfume had a touch of vanilla and cut back on the blackberries and currants, I feel these create a sharp edge to the frangrance and I would have liked if it was a little bit more rounded and delicate through and through. Although perhaps then it would become a bit boring? Regardless, I’m happy with my purchase and I would buy again.

addiehominem

The first time I sampled this, I couldn't really smell it. I'm trying it again today and sprayed more generously, and I'm finally getting something!

Ylang ylang. Fruity ylang ylang, strangely rich, thick, lotion-y ylang. I definitely get fruit, but the fruitiness is suspended in the creamy texture of ylang. It smells like I spread some sort of fruit lotion on my arm, but I really like the effect. The sandalwood is nice, soft, and creamy as well. I still consider this a subtle scent, and not gourmand as one might expect from the notes. And I mean not gourmand in the sense that to me, this doesn't smell like something edible, since it smells like a fruit lotion and not like a basket of fresh wild strawberries or something. It's definitely interesting, and different from generic fruity scents on the market today.

UPDATE: Just bought a full bottle of the EDP based on my growing love for the EDT. The likability of this scent sneaked up on me. I was wearing my decant the other day and I could tell wafted nicely. I actually got a compliment from my perfume-hating sister on it. That was enough to push me to get a FB, even though my original review was based on the EDT. Can't wait to compare the two.

UPDATE 2: The EDP is heavier on the ylang, and a lot more custard-like. The fruit is still there, but it's buried under a blanket of cream. I like it, but I think I'm more in love with the EDT.

Forbiddenjade

This. is. delightful.

Hanae Mori - same bottle as depicted here, EDT - opens up with fizzy strawberry and berries, coated in a tasty vanilla sugar.

After about 30 minutes, ylang ylang is detectable, very pleasantly so, and vanilla marries with sandalwood in the most beautiful, soft spice/wood marriage!

I suppose the EDT is softer than the EDP, for rather soon Hanae Mori sits on the skin. I think this can work also in summer, which would be amazing!

I am in love. Although I have never been a big fan of vanilla scent, this is now my to go for a spoonfool of joy! Love it.

Vanilla panda

According to Hanae Mori official website, the name of that EDT is not eponymous. It is called Butterfly.

I truly believed Butterfly would fulfill that obsession of mine: smelling like a decadent strawberry and cream pie.

Whereas it's widely available for purchase online, sniffing it IRL is tremendously difficult.

In Paris, I scoured a few Nocibe shops (that chain retailer seemingly detains the sole exclusivity) and finally found it in... 2 of them only.
Whenever impulsive blind buys can be avoided, let's give it a chance in person!

The saleslady kindly gave me a full sample and I'm so glad she did!
Blind buying would be a terrible mistake.

So feeble I could hardly smell anything at all, paper strip or skin alike.
I generously soaked my arm and whatever scent I could detect was unpleasant.
So desperate was I to transform into a walking strawberry cheesecake... I wanted to like it so bad!

At best, it remotely reminded me of Mc Donald's fried apple pies.
Moth balls from start to finish, 2h top, before it thankfully faded into near nothingness.

Exact same experience with the EDP, which supposedly is quite different from the EDT.
Further on, I tested the EDT and EDP from both Nocibe shops.
Same disappointment.

The staggering amount of votes likening Butterfly to Casmir, which I enjoy very much, leaves me baffled.

Funny thing is, I smelled an extremely light sugar cinnamon from Butterfly (with ref to aforementionned apple pies), although not listed. Whereas I can't clearly detect listed cinnamon in Casmir.
Also, Casmir is a powerhouse, contrary to Butterfly!

Which led me to question whether my decants came from bad batches.

Besides, the salesladies informed me nearly nobody was even aware of Hanae Mori brand, save for buying their frags.
Then, perhaps those test bottles stood for eons in the perfume shops and went off?

Anyway, almond tree combined with strawberry just doesn't suit me.

I bought Hanae Mori EDP( blue butterfly)two years ago and I was on the fence about it all through these days.when I first received it I thought that I liked it but after my first full wear I discovered that something in it bothers me,honestly I don't know what the disturbing note was but I didn't find it a gourmand like others do and there was too much of a very woodsy vanilla with a dry, screechy, syntethic undertone in it.I didn't used it anymore but I couldn't give it away either.something in my head compelled me to keep it.recently I'm giving chances to my long-forgotten perfumes and a lot of them have moved from my dislike or Meh list to my love list.finally I decided to give Hanae Mori a last chance too and it was the exact right time to do so
I like it's opening phase.it's like a loud plastic strawberry with some sugary vanilla on me but I sometimes like the plasticy scent of some perfumes and it's not bad here, also this plastic-like vibe is faintly.it doesn't smell like cheap, nauseating strawberry-scented body splashes marketed for kids at all.it's delightful, cute and girly, playful and comforting the same time but there's more going on here.after less than an hour it settles down to a heavenly scent! again I don't know what note is responsible for such a beauty.I just know that I can smell strawberry, not a fake, plasticy strawberry anymore but not a juicy, natural one either,it's like strawberry and cream،there's also this lovely, very creamy vanilla,a hint of a sweet powder and a whisper of flowers.I don't care about not being able to smell blueberry and almond anymore,it's such a creamy dreamy pretty light-pink scent that I want to bath in it.it's definitely youthful, playful, flirty, girly but not childish.it's so delicious still smells like a perfume.it's sweet but also fresh and I like it a lot.longevity and sillage are both very good.I'm so happy that I kept it

Jmalone84

This is for blue butterfly. For me this reads exactly like the pyramid above.

I initially got a blast of syrupy almost medicinal sweetness floating in blackcurrants and berries (which the sales guy recoiled from, haha).

I don't really see the vanilla to be honest. I get berries and woods. The woods were quite sharp with the florals at one point. I wouldn't say that this is an extremely sweet fragrance either. My idea of extremely sweet would be LVEB or similar gourmand. This is not a gourmand.

This is berries, florals and woods. Make no mistake.

It's interesting, I like its vibe. It's definitely not my olfactory signature. But I appreciate it. I have to say the sillage is very light. I'll keep it in my collection.

strayduplo

This perfume has been around for a while, and I've been wearing this since college -- almost 15 years now! My tastes have evolved a bit since then, but I still return to this pretty often.

This is definitely a perfume that needs to be worn to be enjoyed. I know most people consider it quite linear, but I find it to be multifaceted and interesting. It's very, very sweet. Syrupy sweet. When I sniff the bottle, I find it almost unpleasantly sharp. On the skin, however, it blooms into something quite lovely with a strong floral component. For the first two hours or so, I can feel the ylang ylang singing brightly over the rest of the notes, which hum together into a floral vanilla accord. I actually can't get any of the strawberry, berry shortcake that everyone else mentions. Once that fades off, it's just pure sweetness, somehow without being overly sugary.

Sillage and lasting power are both pretty good. I am careful with this, no more than two sprays. It fades away gracefully after about 8-10 hours, though it can still be smelled close to the skin for longer than that.

gtabasso

I am not a big fan of vanilla or fruity fragrances, but I love this! It's got that vintage vibe to it with lots of ylang. The top was all about the ylang with some vanilla. The florals are present, mainly peony. Then the fruits presented with strawberry and blackberry dominant. This fragrance is very gourmand sweet. When you almost get nauseated and get a headache from the fruits and ylang and vanilla, the sandalwood and rosewood present to give it a woody depth and take the edge off the fruits. And, the vanilla becomes present again. This is NOT like Burberry other than being sweet and having vanilla. This has floral and fruit dimensions that Burberry doesn't. I found this for $4 at a thrift store. A full bottle of 100 ml. I bought it unsniffed and am glad that I did. What a bargain. In the final drydown it is a creamy vanilla from the sandalwood that almost has a benzoin feel to it. Why is vanilla not listed as a note?

pamelalasalle110

I saw this while shopping on the Zulily website. It was in a category marked Burberry and had been compared to Brit which I love. I was surprised by the gorgeous pink butterfly keepsake box, both the beauty and size at first glance. I opened it to a tall sexy 3.4oz bottle of golden goodness and a good sized body butter. This scent while a beautiful blend of fruit, floral, vanilla and warm amber and musk, was compared unfairly with Brit, it's more like Burberry Her. It's pleasant aroma draws comments like crazy and last a full 8 hour workday. I'd never heard of Hanae Mori, but I love Butterfly and would like to try more.

justchillinxo

I've always wanted to try this but I can never find it anywhere in Canada.

mychinarose

I remember smelling Hanae Mori in Sephora in the early 2000s when my sister was a manager there. I know I was drawn to it, but I don't think I ever sprayed it on myself. And this pre-dates my current fragrance obsession so it wasn't like I was eager to buy something new for myself. But after bringing this home a few days ago in a gift set from TJ Maxx, I'm a little shocked at myself. WHAT TOOK ME SO LONG?? I got the EDP along with the body cream, and all I can say is, this is just "me." I love, love, love edible scents, and to me this is a strawberry almond milk cheesecake. It is gorgeous!! Yesterday I wore the flanker Hanae, and as much as I love it, I love this one even more! This reminds me a little bit of La Petit Robe Noire (also a major love) but without the licorice. I wonder how those would smell layered together?? I keep reading about how everyone is comparing this to Vanilla Fields, which I don't think I've ever smelled...but now that's on the list, too! And of course, now I want the EDT since other reviewers say they prefer it. Maybe the EDP for cold weather and the EDT for warm? Seriously, though. Why did I wait???

Ker2smell

I have it. I used to love it. Now, not so much. Years have passed and my nose has matured.

Mtotheelly

This is 100% Coty Vanilla Musk, circa 1997. I lived in it, and that's why I would know it anywhere. This perfume is interesting. Normally your perfume pyramid starts with your top notes, but on me this perfume went straight to the base notes.

I'm shocked that vanilla is not listed as others have noted, as vanilla is what this perfume is all about! I can only assume that cedar, sandalwood and almond combined, create the scent of vanilla.

The berries in this scent are almost invisible. I thought I'd somehow read the notes wrong, until finally an hour later I got the faintest whiff of strawberry. This is difficult to even catch, but if you do, it's not your candied strawberry. It's a tart lip smacking strawberry that plays softly in the background.

The scent is very creamy and lasts forever. You'll smell it in hair and clothes the next day. Obviously this is a cold weather scent. Do not use this in summer, as it will suffocate someone. This is a like but not a love for me. It's a nice memory. If you love sweet creamy scents, this is a winner. I layer this with Twilight Woods from Bath and Body, and receive many compliments.

melissaliu1

1. It sprays like a firehose, I've used it 3 times and I imagine it being already down a millimeter.
2. Blue butterflies version, smells reliably and predominantly of strawberry rose cream and a solid base of sandalwood/rosewood. It hits quite high and gives that plastic dollhead feeling.
3. Even after showering it stays on me for well over 24 hours with a softened profile and "The smell reaches my nose without trying to" sileage starting with the strawberry sharpness then a general sweetness. Amazingly clothes and fabrics don't trap the scent much, it really likes skin.
4. Use with caution or it becomes a sugar rush for your oronasopharynx

It's sweet and rich enough that I wouldn't want to wear it above "feels like 70 degrees" or humid weather.

It's a high maintenance crowd-pleaser pretty girl, not the casual cozy sweet of fragonard miranda.

Edit 1/2019: After the weather turned freezing cold (25F and below) the scent profile became a lot tamer. The chemical dollhead opening and sour strawberry elements are reined in, the projection has contracted, and I've been reaching for it a lot.

BillieNG

It's the beginning of November, 16 degrees Celsius here and Hanae Mori's oeuvre is giving away its best. Summertime it's not her season. It's screaming for attention now, but to be honest - it deserves it. The outstanding strawberry-sandalwood combination is worth applause. The composition is complicated and only seemingly linear. Otherwise how can you get that vanilla aftertaste strong enough to compare it to Chopard's Casmir and Fragonard's Miranda if vanilla is not mentioned at all? It doesn't exist among the ingredients. It's nothing like Miranda. Not in the least can be compared to Casmir. It's creamy, yes. But it's a screamy-creamy fragrance. It's like a beautiful and shy Japanese girl, who is exited or affected for some reason and modifies her intonation in order to send her angry message to all listeners. It is a sour-sweet scent. Not sweet enough to make ladies hold back. And not sour enough to make it unwearable for girls. It's an intriguing fragrance. Probably love-hate one. Supposedly love-hate within the frame of a single wearer and depending on her/his mood. I respect the nose behind this. It has got the proper sense of humour and creativity.

umaidah

its like a first love - innocent. i bought a bottle because i love the name, and i rarely find this on the store. the opening is a bit sharp though, but it tones down to a nice sweet, strawberry and delicious vanila like smell.

mermaidshimmer

This is a very delicate fragrance with an innocent vibe to it. Innocent because of its sweetness and lack of heavy notes, and low to moderate projection.

Imagine a slice of strawberry cheesecake, heavy on the cream cheese but light on the strawberry sauce. The cream cheese is fluffy and airy. No one would smell this cream cheese dessert unless they are getting ready to take a bite out of it. (Not in the way a batch of chocolate chip cookies which would fill a room with an aroma).

This is extremely long lasting (8 hours+) and it lingers on clothing, so this is perfect for occasions when you'd like to smell nice but don't want to attract attention because of your scent.

YoshikuniAkino

OMG, when I dotted it on my wrist, I was blasted by an intense creamy scent. It radiated like crazy and surrounded me in a sweet fragrance and lasted half a day. I couldn't pick the floral note here. Although it may be overwhelming at first, it softened to a lovely woody scent after a while. In winter, when I wear a scarf to hidden the scent a bit more, I would definitely love it.

TxTizzy

This is for the Hanae Butterfly (blue butterflies on box)

Strawberry Milkshake doll head? Yes

I like it. My daughter wears it, and she's a young teen. I think it suits a girl her age, but I don't hesitate to borrow it on occasion.

Sillage and longevity are impressive, imo. I rarely say that. When my daughter wears it to school, she is still in a cloud of it, when I get home at the end of the day. No joke. If you like sweet and creamy fragrances, and are looking for something that will stay with you all day....give this one a try.

elmccullar

I have the edt and it has the doll head note

Mrs.Allard

EDT- Very soft and powdery strawberry candy smell. It has a plastic girly girl vibe to it that really is the allure of this fragrance for me. The perfect scent for a spring day being all girly in a garden or something like that. I really like how there is a freshness to this powdery scent that keeps it well FRESH, and not stagnant. The dry down remains powdery and the sweet accords are still present 4 hours later, although they are now a skin scent.

elmccullar

I adore strawberry scents! This one is a beautiful creamy strawberry scent with just a hint of vanilla. It’s more mature than your average strawberry scent. I can see why some mention the plastic doll head note but I still love this one.
I like this one best in cold weather.

lnoskin

I blind bought this because I found it for cheap online and saw it had such great reviews on here. When I received it, I strongly disliked the smell. I expected it to smell fruity which it did not in the slightest to me (at least on my skin). I am 22 and would advise others around my age not to buy this without testing it first. It is an extremely mature scent in my opinion.

Poupchette

This smells like a fresh summer beverage to me, but not a fizzy one, no, a creamy round delicious one. I can't stop smelling my wrist and my clothes, I love this smells so much that it makes me want to jump in my car right now and go get a strawberry / vanilla milkshake.
I got one of the older bottle with a little pink butterfly sticker on it, so the EDT, I don't get too much sandalwood from it (which is a shame because it's one of my very favorite smell) but just enough to balance the sweetness and give it enough depth to avoid smelling like a little child.
Overall it's a very cozy seductive and feminine scent to me, definitely something that men would enjoy smelling on a woman in my opinion.

JSRbeatles

My understanding is that this is the same fragrance as Hanae Mori Butterfly. The notes seem to be the same.

akramps

There are so many reviews of this but I had to chime in and confirm some of these opinions. I was very skeptical this would smell as described (because let's face it, those amazing cheapies you all rave about never work out for me!)
While reading previous reviews I was very skeptical of the plastic doll head comparisons, but, wow, it really does dry down as a soft, strawberry, fresh plastic doll head! This aggravated me a little bit, because though I do desire this fragrance, can I fit it into my wardrobe? Is there a time / place when I want to smell of plastic doll heads?

The opening was not great, very alcohol-ish and sharp. The initial blast was fruity, and then, again, as another reviewer pointed out it smelled of Aquolina's Gold Sugar at the mid, and they are totally BANG ON! It really smells similar to Gold Sugar but a bit softer.

The dry down is soft and yes like Vanilla Fields, but a softer, sweetened version. I don't see how it compares to Casmir though my reference to that scent is an original sample vial I came across in a Caboodles from the 90's, and not the current mix.

I do want to retest this, and I do think I would enjoy a soft, sweet, strawberry vanilla, but I am not ready to buy it yet! $29.99 at a local Rexall Drugs, (in Canada). Will think on it some more!

UnearthlyApothecary

This is the perfect representation of “plastic doll head’s” a creamy strawberry dolly like those scented strawberry shortcake dolls from when I was 5. If you love creamy/powdery and want something soft and comforting/nostalgic with a light sweet fruityness I couldn’t think of a better scent. This is worth buying just for the nostalgia factor. There is no similarity to Vanilla Fields for me. Please Fragrantica, consider adding separate entries for the EDT and EDP! Update: this turned out to be a real wrist sniffer the slightly masculine woodsy drydown is amazing. I just adore it so much I purchased a vintage bottle of the EDP. I really don’t know what formulation my sample was so I’m very excited to compare the two!

Charess

Strawberry milkshake in a plastic cup.

Hanae Mori EDT is a creamy, woody strawberry fragrance. I personally also get a very prominent plastic note, which I can best describe as the smell of barbie dolls. This ruins the fragrance for me, sadly.

If I ignore the barbie doll aspect, I get a perfume that is mostly creamy sandalwood, combined with sweet strawberry and vanilla. The Ylang-Ylang makes the fragrance somewhat sensual, and the woods give the scent some depth.

Sillage is moderate, longevity is about 6 hours.

meg0825

I wondered about this fragrance for a long time but was never able to test it. So I ended up blind buying a full bottle of the EDT version. I am not disappointed and like it a lot. It's very sweet, creamy, fruity, and woody. I read the strawberry-rose-almond combination is what gives this fragrance its vanilla tone and there is no vanilla in it at all. I found that very interesting. I think this is too sweet for summer but I'll enjoy wearing it this winter. Very nice!

Perfumechick45

Wow!!

This is nice but I will give a review after a couple of days when my nose clears from 4 other fragrances that I've ordered.

Update : and it took me long enough. I'm at half of a bottle people, this is the best grown up vanilla that I've ever smelled and tried. It's not sickly sweet or the childish young sugary cotton candy vanilla. When I first purchased this fragrance it was still in cold weather mode. So the fragrance didn't do well on my skin, and as the weather gotten warmer I tried it out again. Boy was I glad that I did, because this vanilla is so beautiful and it stays with you all day. The longevity Is the max and the Sillage Is Max people can smell it from a distance and it lingers after I'm long gone. It last for 8-10 hours on my skin..

dsmercoco

I love this fragrance. We bought my first bottle of Hanae Mori edp on our honeymoon in '02. The sales lady asked me what my favorite scents were and after I told her I wore cashmir by chopard it was game over. They smell so similar to one another. HM for me is heavy sweet vanilla, strawberry and almonds. It's perfect for the colder months. Longevity is very good and the silage is heavy for the first hour then I'd say its mild. My husband loves it once it dress down. I love to open my closet door and still be able to smell it on my clothes.
