"The object of this book is to get you into the frame of mind in which, instead of the normal method of stopping whereby you start off with the feeling that you are climbing Mount Everest and spend the next few weeks craving a cigarette and envying other smokers, you start right away with a feeling of elation, as if you had been cured of a terrible disease." If you are reading this review I will assume you are contemplating quitting, that's how I found myself reading these wonderful reviews! I was thinking Really??? How??? Are they sure????

My smoking history
I am 27
Smoked for 12 years
Smoked 20 a day for 10 years
Tried so many times to quit, nothing worked!

Hypnotherapy cost me £350.00 did not even stop for a day!

Patches - Worked for a week or so, but felt jealous of other people smoking, felt depressed, felt like I had lost a long life friend, even smoked with patches on, tut tut tut! Also tried inhalators, gum and pills... nothing worked i thought it was because i must just love smoking, I am meant to smoke! If i really wanted to quit then i would be able to do it!

I was skeptical and did not think after everything i have tried before that a book costing a fiver could work for me, I wasn't even sure I wanted to quit! I have been given advise about quitting before and it went like this " You wont be able to quit unless you really want to!" However, I thought 800 + people can not all be wrong! And they were NOT wrong!

I thought I loved smoking, I enjoyed breathing in the smoke, I loved the smell, I thought I would always love it!

As soon as i started to read the book, things just started to click, I wont ruin it for you but Allen has a great way of explaining why we start smoking in the first place, and all though it seems obvious and common sense i found it very enlightening! I finished the book after one evening and one morning of reading! As soon as I finished it i felt empowered and in control, I immediately ripped up 15 cigarettes and through them in the bin! I felt great all day, even with my 2 year old in tow!

The next day and the day after, I'm not going to lie I did not feel great, its understandable because for the first time in years nicotine was not going in to my body. Even though I did not feel great I did not feel terrible and I did not want to physically smoke, I was still able to get on with my day!

Day 3! Really felt like this was the turning point, started to feel better and have felt a little better each day from then!

Day 10! I feel Fantastic! I do not miss Smoking, I feel more confident, I Feel if I could do this I can do anything!

It really is the easy way to quit smoking! I am so Happy, and I know 10 days isn't a long time but I know in my heart I will never smoke a cigarette ever ever again! I don't need to smoke to feel calm because I am always calm now!

This is the 2nd time I wrote this review, my Boyfriend accidentally closed the browser and lost it, Even after that I did not feel the urge to smoke! I do still get the odd feeling that something is missing, but i do not want to physically smoke a minute or two later I feel fine again! I'm sure 20 days in i will not feel this!

If you are not sure if you want to quit, if you love smoking, if smoking makes you feel happy or even if it makes you feel bad! You should spend a fiver and read it!

Nothing to lose and everything to gain! I have an extra £67.40 already!

I wish Allen car was still alive as I feel I owe him a very big thank you!

RIP Allen! you have helped me change my life for the better, a truly great person!

Update. 8 weeks on and still a happy non smoker :-)

I have been smoking for 18 years around 30 cigarettes a day. I left this review 4 years ago and I thought I update this. I am still free from smoking and I don't have any cravings at all. I have recommended this book to quite a lot of people with varied success. I found that in order for this book to be effective you must have strong desire to want to quit smoking. I know this is quite obvious but when I gifted this book to someone who had half thinking about quitting but didn't really wanted, they went back to smoking after a few days (they gave book to their friends and family and they stopped smoking). When I told someone who really wanted to stop smoking they went and bought the book themselves and managed to stop after finishing the book. Important thing to remember is that this book works by changing the way you think about smoking. It made me realise I don't need to smoke and I don't need cigarettes to destress.

I even bought this book in Korean language version for my mother who's been smoking over 40 years. She managed to quit after finishing the book.

(Old Review)
My daily routine used to evolve around cigarettes. I would smoke as soon as I got up in the morning then shower, then I would smoke another one.
On my way to work and while I am heading towards tube station I would smoke another one, and then I would smoke another one walking to my work. Once I arrive near the building I work at, I would stop and smoke another 2 in the hope of cramming in as much nicotine as possible so I can get by until my lunch break.
As soon as my lunch breaks start I would head out to smoke 2 cigarettes before getting my lunch. I would get sandwiches and smoke while I am eating. After finishing my lunch I would then smoke another 4 before going back to work. I would find any excuse to go out to smoke and every spare time I get I will smoke and all I used to think about was when I would be able to smoke my next cigarette.
I am sure this might sounds extreme for some and for some rather familiar, but cigarettes used to control my life.
It took me almost 1 month to read this book (while still smoking normally as per instruction from the book!) I am happy to say I am finally free from the poison since 27 June 2011!!! So more than 1 month now since my final cigarette.

I know you might be thinking it's too early to celebrate but over the past 18 years of smoking (more than half of my life) I have attempted to quit smoking many time and my longest attempt lasted mere 3 days and shortest 3 hours!! And all my previous attempt, every single second was constant test of my will power and it felt like pure hell.

The Big and very important difference this time is that I don't crave cigarette any more!!! I used to think I have no will power when it comes to cigarette as all my previous attempt ended miserably (short). What this book made me realise was that there is an Easy Way and that it has nothing to do with your will power.

What the book did for me was made me realise and see the cigarette does absolutely nothing for me. It does not relax me when I am stressed nor relieve boredom, and certainly does not boost my confidence! What the book does is change the way you think about cigarette not by scaring you with health risks (we all know it's bad for you) but making me see through the facts.

I've read the review of other people before buying this book, and yes it was hard to believe there could be an Easy Way to stop smoking. I bought the book because I really wanted to stop smoking and all my other method (patches, inhaler, and cold turkey) failed and someone I know quit after reading this book. And it costs less than a pack of cigarette!!!! You really have nothing to lose but everything to gain by reading this book.

Last week I was sitting at a park and someone came and asked me for a light. You can not imagine how good it felt for me to say "Sorry, I don't smoke!!!! I am a Non-smoker"

Update!! It's been almost 2 year since I stopped smoking, and I don't miss smoking at all. I am glad that I decided to read this book.

I was a smoker for 11 years, and tried to stop many times. Nothing worked... until I read this book.

I haven't touched a cigarette since then (I stopped in June 2020). But you have to really want to quit to understand what the book is telling you.

I was recommended this book by a friend who said if you are serious about wanting to quit smoking give this a shot. I was and I did and I am a proud non smoker since :) It's actually really easy to stop once you know the reasons why you smoke in the first place! That is what Allen explains to you in such clear detail without trying to scare you. I highly recommend this to all smokers who are sure they want to quit. If you are not sure you want to quit then this book can't get you to do so!

5.0 out of 5 stars A very insightful and helpful book...despite the annoying title!!
Reviewed in the United States on 27 August 2015
OK let's admit it: if you've been a smoker for a while, and have struggled with quitting, the title of this book is annoying. But it IS enormously helpful, and the author (despite what the title may suggest) is not dismissive of the difficulties of quitting...or, more accurately, the anguish of wanting to quit, but failing to do so. The author was a heavy smoker for several decades, and then had a flash of insight that enabled him to quite and to help many others do so. He understands smoking inside and out, and all the mental gymnastics we smokers go through to keep ourselves smoking, although we want to quit...or say we do. The basis for much of the book is the distinction he makes between the problems of smoking and the problems of quitting. And the main point is that the problems of quitting are far fewer and lighter to bear than the problems of smoking. He also extensively analyzes the interaction between the physical effects of nicotine addiction and the way in which it, and what we've been told, distort our thinking about smoking and quitting. He repeats over and over, in a helpful way, the basic point: smoking a cigarette does nothing positive for us but ease the tension that began to build up as soon as we put out the previous one. That's nicotine addiction. This gets us caught in a trap, where half of our lives we're not smoking, but wish we could; while the other half we're smoking but wish we didn't have to.The key to escaping this trap is to recognize that the withdrawal effects of quitting nicotine are actually quite mild, and pass within minutes--unlike the withdrawal effects of alcohol or heroin, for example. The answer is simple: don't smoke the next cigarette. And don't fool yourself: there is no such thing as one cigarette. One cigarette leads to the craving for the next one, and the next one, and so on. What he does not address, and I would like to add: although the physical effects of nicotine withdrawal are indeed quite mild, they are also psychologically very powerful. What most people will need in addition to Carr's great insights is some method (or better yet, several methods) of self-soothing to get through the distressing psychological effects of nicotine withdrawal. As a popular psychological treatment method teaches (DBT: Dialectical Behavior Therapy), we need ways of distracting ourselves and ways of soothing or comforting ourselves when the emotional need we feel for a cigarette feels overwhelming. For example, I got a self-hypnosis App for my iPhone: it doesn't actually hypnotize you, but it is pleasantly distracting and relaxing. Then there are things like recalling favorite memories (that don't involve smoking!), thinking about the people you love, looking at their pictures or imagining their faces. You can also pay attention to your breathing and with each breath imagine that your lungs are clearing from dirty snow to pure white snow. Look around for advice on such techniques and or experiment yourself. One more thing, I found that a product called Xylimelts (for dry mouth) are much more helpful than a nicotine lozenge. The key things is that they don't contain nicotine! Nicotine is what we want to stay away from! But they are small, and can attach to the side of a back molar very comfortably, and last for hours, giving you a mild, pleasant flavor and soothing your mouth. I find that I don't want to ruin that pleasant healthy feeling in my mouth with a cigarette. Best wishes, comrades in smoke rings: it IS NOT easy to quit, but this book IS very helpful and might be the key thing to getting you on the right track.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book really works!
Reviewed in Canada on 12 December 2013
I read this book almost 8 years ago and quit smoking. Prior to reading this book, I tried just about everything to quit. Gum, patches, hypnosis and even a beeping gadget that would beep every time you were allowed to smoke. Nothing worked. So when I tell people I quit smoking just by reading a book they are quite incredulous and curious.

I believe there is a trigger in a written line that will strike a chord within you and make you quit smoking once and for all.

I have recommended this book to 5 other people. Two out of the 5 people read this book and quit. The other 3 are afraid to read this book as they fear losing their crutch (cigarettes).

I will admit that after 7 days of not smoking, I had to pick up the book again to re-read some parts of it (that's okay - they tell you to do that). I took it one day at a time after that. If I can quit, you can quit. For just a few dollars, you can also be rid of the shackles that cigarette smoking has on you. And smell better, too. Good luck!
