Once the alcohol evaporates (and you have to wait some) you get a faint chamomile tea and an amalgam of other flowers and notes that smell suspiciously of rubber, like the memory of blowing up balloons as a child. Weird.

This is my first perfume. That I ever wore.
Did I choose it? No.
Did I know it? No.
As a pre-teenage girl, my cousin gave me this perfume. Little bottle. She was working in the fragrance store. She loved parfumés. She knew them. Well... The modern ones. Trendy ones. Not ones that my eccentric allure led me to. Still... Cerutti was my first. That's why I always own it and I have a love-hate relationship with it. There were years when I had it but I didn't wear it. Emotions. Persistence. Faithfulness. Strength. I don't abandon someone who leads me into being interested in perfumes way more than the simple user is. I was 11 when I got this perfume. I didn't know what to do. How to wear it... I was just a girl. So I stood it on the shell next to my radio and waited till I didn't discovered other perfumes in through Italian magazine Gioa. That magazine regularly awarded buyers with little gifts. Mostly perfumes testers. Ohh I loved that. That's how I got my first Amarige. First Arpège. First Chanel Allure...and many many others. I carefully collected all and stood them next to Cerutti. Afraid of wearing them. Till I felt I was becoming a woman. Let me add something here. I still have many many old testers from collecting them whole my "grown" life. Some little bottles lost their names with aging but the scents are still very OK.

Back to Cerutti.
This is the perfume of freshness. And security. That nice bottle, like a bubble of radiant peach light, that's how this perfume wears itself on. You don't wear it. It wears you. You can't break it with your body scent feromones cocktail as a fundamental carrier. No. It stays in fresh control. Perfume is very high quality. Composed strongly and unbreakable. It's holding control as silage for hours. Doesn't let go. So don't overreact. One press. On your back. Yes back. Let it control you from the back. Components I found interesting together are camomile and narcissus. Unbelievable friendship. Check the components. POWER. Control. No, this is not for every woman. You gotta be at least as annoying as Mimosa is. Or Lily of the Valley. Or Geranium. Mémorisé something. Snails attack almost everything in the garden. Geranium they don't.

What a control. Till the last breath of tuberose penetrated by amber puts you to sleep...

I blind bought this, wanted something fresh and calm i could wear around the house and gotta say it was a perfect choice.

sappho's tea

nice but not for me

The drydown of this perfume is quite soapy but not bothersome. I'm talking about an elegant and feminine soap dispenser. I prefer it on days when I dress more classically.

jeannebelmondo

Scented maxi pads. Whatever fragrance notes are used in those this smells like it

Kristinb64

This is everything Byredo's Mojave Ghost wishes it could be. These two fragrances give me the same vibe, but Cerruti does it SO much better. It replaces the sort of BO funk that Mojave Ghost can give off sometimes with clean, soapy florals. It's clean, yet also so soft and welcoming. "Pretty" is the best word I can think of to describe this fragrance. It's like the most beautiful, creamy feminine soap. Very delicate. Super intriguing and signature worthy for sure!

Under the impression that I am wearing a pastel Victorian dress, in the garden of the socially known as eccentric aristocratic family, in their country domain, sipping chamomile tea. In my mind it is the middle of spring, the air is a bit chilly although the sun warms the skin a little, a very comforting temperate weather. The garden has not been taken care of and there are wild flowers growing everywhere.
Anyway, I usually don't like powdery floral perfumes. Well, honestly I like them but not on me, this is not my vibe, I don't see myself wearing them even if I love to smell it on other people. But this one is really nice and it is a safe reach for work (I work in a library, in direct contact with clients).
I don't even want to say that I like it, I can say I am a bit found of it, this perfume really grows on me ??? Almost makes me sentimental, almost nostalgic.
Grown-up powdery floral perfume. Quite musky and veeerryyyy comforting !!!

This is a nice floral, powdery scent. Makes me feel very calm and grounded, probably the chamomile which I associate with a state of calmness and relaxation. I really like it but it hasn’t grown on me probably because it’s a bit more mature than what I’d go for in a clean, every day scent. I like to wear it for bed, I think I may learn to appreciate the scent better in my next decade of life when my taste will evolve and change. Definitely recommend you checking this out if you need a gift for a special woman in your life.

This is the most underrated perfumes ever! From the price to the scent and longevity on the skin. I have been wearing 1881 since I was 12. I am 26 years old now. It's been me and my mom's signature perfume ever since. Moved on from it 2 years ago. But my mom purchased it a week ago, gave it a sniff and tears just came down my face. This perfume holds all of my childhood memories. I don't normally go for floral powdery scents. But this perfume right here. Besides Marc Jacobs Daisy, this is the only floral perfume that I adore. I find 1881 to be a very classy/elegant/sophisticated perfume. I would say it's a great all year round perfume. Works for office, business, everyday wear, beach, going out. Lasts on my skin for about 8 hours. I just placed and order for 1881. And I think I need to have this perfume in my collection till the day I die. Such a classic! 11/10

On a recent shopping trip I ended up 'just browsing' the perfume section of a store. I had seen this bottle about a million times before but never picked it up to actually smell it. I probably assumed I had already done that and didn't like it, after all this has been around for quite some time.
That day though I picked up the tester bottle, sniffed it to make sure this was even worth finding a paper strip to spray it on and - boom - I suddenly was 7 years old again, sitting in my babysitter's lap, reading Peter Pan or any other book to her, while my parents had gone out on a date. She was like the older sister I had always wanted but somehow never got and unlocking all these precious memories of her was pure magic.
She always smelled like Cerutti 1881 and I loved it. Finding her scent, bottled up and at an affordable price was unbelievable.
The mimosa is definitely strong, so is the iris. It definitely leans soapy, which I love. It's a great fragrance, very 90's in a way but inoffensive enough. I don't see myself wearing it too often but I sometimes just take the cap off and smell it.

Suze58

Does anyone else get ‘celery’ when they first spray this? It doesn’t last long and it doesn’t put me off because it’s such a beautiful fragrance that can be worn any time, anywhere, by any age group - just curious to know what the initial ‘celery’ vibe is 😂

Zeddyteddy

This is my signature scent. It was my first ever ‘grown up’ perfume and I still enjoy it now 25 years on. It is so comforting and familiar and I will always love it. If I smell it on other people I get a weird possessive envious feeling! So silly! It is perfect for every season and it is also office appropriate. I used to wear it on nights out when I was younger - but that’s because it was the only perfume I owned at the time :) it’s definitely a day scent now. Although I have more fragrances, this will forever be my favourite, and forever my signature. I hope my children associate this with me like I do with my own mother’s scent.

Simsimbird

Dusty, plastic smelly, headache inducing hairspray. I can not handle this fragrance if somebody around me wears it.

qianqian

Received a vial card from a friend. Such a lovely mimosa powdery floal! The white florals here are well balanced. It presents sweet, fresh, with just a tiny bit of coriader discernable. And the price is very affordable. Great piece of work.

wildangel72

Most florals on me are sharp and screechy, giving instant headaches followed by nausea. Lately though, my tastes in scent are changing--an inevitable part of aging apparently. The standard gourmand and fruity scents, the sticky sweet vanilla cupcakes in a bottle, just don't appeal to me in my 40s. I can't do the proverbial "old lady" scents, all powder and patchouli, either, so I've been trying out various musks, freshes, & fruity florals looking for a new scent vibe. I was pleasantly surprised by this one, especially because the notes list reads like a botany manual. It starts off a tiny bit sharp like most florals, but quickly softens and becomes just a very pretty, unobtrusive scent cloud. Sillage is close, but I get compliments from ppl standing next to me. Longevity is respectable, a good 6 hours on skin, longer on clothes. Grown but not granny-ish, I enjoy wearing this scent and plan to add it to my regular lineup for the spring and fall as it seems best suited to moderate temperatures. Mine btw is the version with the plain cap, not marbled, and embossed 1881 on the glass of the bottle.

Leolia

First spray was pleasant but then quickly turn into a dated unpleasant mess on my skin.
A screechy rubbery skin scent.

selfishxromance

I become instantly anosmic to this one. Such a shame, I really wanted to like it :( I have the reformulated one btw

TheCandyperfumegirl

Bought the Cerruti 1881 perfume after watching Kathleen Lights review. Here's my personal thoughts on this perfume.
It was a blind buy. I fell in love with the bottle and the notes looked interesting. So I bought it without any high expectations.
After unboxing the perfume and spraying it for the first time i hated it so much that I immediately washed my hand and changed my clothes. Even after that my room was still smelling like this perfume. I was really upset 😔. But my husband said this smells nice and I should give it another try.
After a few hours I sprayed it again. This time I actually liked it. After a while the smell grew on me. I started to enjoy it. It's a powdery floral perfume in my opinion. My nose failed to detect any citrus note. This smells a lot like the vintage "Pond's Powder"
You can wear it to office, class, meetings or anywhere you like without offending anyone. Best for both outdoor and indoor. This also performs well during this extremely hot summer.
It makes me feel cozy. Cause this reminds me of my Dadi(grandmother). I'm wearing this almost everyday now. It's super long lasting. Lasted almost 8+ hours on my skin with 3+ hours porjection. After that it becomes a skin scent and only I or if someone hugs me can smell it for 12+ hours. It's really amazing.
I've got complements while wearing this from almost everyone around me.
I highly recommend this perfume if you're looking for an inoffensive floral powdery fragrance with super lasting power.

A fresh, clean, slightly soapy floral scent. There’s so much going on, that I can’t really distinguish any of the notes. I don’t find the florals powdery like vintage make-up powders, it’s soapy florals.

It’s classy and sophisticated, balanced.. but I don’t really like it, especially the dry down. I get a weird medicinal note.

MyScentBubble

Soooo beautiful it almost makes me cry. lmao. I love it!!! So classy and clean.

dismalharmony

Oh, this is wonderful. It has aged quite gracefully for a fragrance of its vintage, but still carries a distinctly 1990s feel. For me, it perfectly walks the line between the heavy florals of the early 90s and the freshies of the latter half of the decade. That big bouquet of flowers melts down into something surprisingly airy and aquatic. Note that these comments are based on a sample vial of the current EDT formulation. This was probably a much different beast back in '95, but I'm willing to bet it was just as, if not even more beautiful than it is now.

Ariete76

I have the new version, in the certainly reformulated version I can certainly say that it is a wonderful bouquet of clean and candid flowers! As soon as it is sprayed you can feel a fresh and sparkling scent certainly given by freesia, green lily of the valley and bergamot, then in the heart where it remains for me the whole composition initially becomes pungent with hints of chamomile and other flowers that reveal a powdery and clean heart. Yes, it is wonderful, one of the few falcon perfumes that I like... (I am not a fan of powdery perfumes) I see it as perfect for young women and also for more mature women, it is a timeless, ageless perfume, one of those that you always wear with you because you know that it is perfect in every circumstance! Ideal for spring but as I was saying in my opinion it is a must-have in every season and occasion especially if you love perfumes that give that clean sense of well-being WONDERFUL

Faeriecoma

Reminds me of that smell of someone just had a shower and it is the early 2000’s. very nostalgic. I love it I’m gonna get myself a full bottle 💗

LeotaLou

Apparently not released in the 80s, but it transports you to the late 80’s early 90’s when womanly was more in vogue than girly. This is bright, fizzy, sparkling, tart. Picture yellow flowers draped over a marble statue. It is certainly feminine and reminds me of a bubbly fruity drink or a sparkling rosé wine. It’s a pastel suit with shoulder pads. It’s a strong woman with a smile, adult without needing to prove its sensuousness or seriousness. Lots of wonderful floral notes that aren’t used much in current perfumes. Easy reach, I think I will be wearing it a lot in the summer.

toosimilar

Nostalgic about it, sort of teleport to late 90s - 2000s

Ambrenuit

Timeless classic. My roommate in university has been wearing this scent, she bought it in Great Britain, as it was not sold in my country back then. And back then, I did not like it. It was probably the matter of body chemistry, or the cigarettes plus the lack personal of hygiene of hers. But all together, she managed to kill this beautiful scent for me and annoy me all year long, that I had to spent with her. 27 years later I rediscovered this timeless fragrance and its stylish bottle and I have absolutely opposite feelings towards this fragrance. Suddenly I just love it! There is something soothing in this scent, the most probably the chamomille. Other reviewers mentioned that this perfume is very motherly and I hundred percent agree. It is motherly and calming, it is like herbal tea with honey for the nerves after a difficult day. It is freezing cold january, but when I close my eyes, I see myself walking barefoot through the meadow full of flowers in the late summer evening. Wearing a floatty boho dress and a flower wreath on my head. My long hair is flowing , I have straw basket full of herbs. Bees and butterflies, are returning home from the meadow in the setting sun. This perfume is giving me feeling of tranquilty and harmony. Woods and spices in this perfume are subtle for my nose, but flowers and herbs are beautifully prominent. This fragrance is so calming, that I started to wear it to bed. It is like warm blanket and tea with honey. It is not dated at all, it is classic.

Moje úplně první vůně, kterou jsem si jako děvče sama koupila. A stále jsem věrná. Je jako pohlazení

UlianaM

The more I wear it, the more I like it.
At first I thought it lacked intensity and sweetness, but actually after trying various fragrances in a shop I now know this is one of a handful that actually stand out. I mean this is different. In a good way different. It smells like dried wildflowers with little powder on a sunny August day. It's intimate and something only people standing really close to you can-and should- smell. It's fragile and female. It is not vampy, not sexy, not aggressive. It's very soft and warm.
Somebody mentioned ballet.. I do agree. Ballet, home, a turtleneck sweater you'd wear in the end of winter ... herbal tea and a warm blanket on a cooler day; open window, fresh air and first warm rays of sunlight on your skin in the beginning of spring; wildflower fields in August when it didn't rain for quite a while; autumn when you can already feel the air getting cooler and the days are getting shorter, but at the same time the hope to catch a couple of more summer days is not leaving you.

p.s. even though it's soft, if you overspray, you may get a headache.

cinnamoncandle

Smells like ballet. I did ballet from 2-7 years old so it’s been a while but the scent association is STRONG. The second I sniffed it I thought “ballet teacher.”

I don’t know if my ballet teacher wore this (can’t ask as she’s no longer alive) but to me it smells like the musty church hall that I fumbled my pliés and got scolded by old ladies in. Not bad, but if I smell this in public I will immediately feel like a chubby 5 year old stuffed into a second hand leotard again. Nostalgic, in a way.

Crystals On My Converse

My favourite Auntie wore this back in the mid 90s and I always think of her when I smell this!
Flowers, fresh out of the shower in the 90s peachy bubbles 🫧 in a bottle
Probably considered quite a dated fragrance now but I love it still! Wear it regularly too 🩷

Aromaconfidence

This fragrance really blossoms in the heat! On my skin during warm weather it is the most beautiful floral-soapy-peachy goodness. It is a soapy/musky second skin that makes me feel beautiful.
My then boyfriend, now husband couldn't stop sniffing me and he has allergies...so definitely allergy safe during warm weather. I have noticed that during cold weather it is alot more powdery... still pretty, but more powdery.

jomxlohx

On my skin, this reminds me of Diptyque fleur de peau. Not exactly the same but the powderiness, the iris and the cozy-calm feeling is the same. The performance is on a par too.

duthchas

this had fresh, floral opening notes which i enjoyed. however, in the dry-down the scent changed to something sickly – as if someone had managed to capture the feeling you get in your mouth after eating too many sweeties in a fragrance.

tessture

Something about this smells horrible in the vial. Sticky pasty nasty sandalwood. Well, I got brave and tried in on my skin. There, the sticky pasty note fades back pretty quickly and it becomes more of a hand lotion floral; sweet vanilla, wood base, floral jasmine top notes. Nice enough, gentle, but kind of boring and that onset is foul.

luna k

Tested for a second time in hot weather and now I understand why so many people love this. During the first wear, in cool weather, 1881 smelled like a muddy floral ambroxan scent and I did not like it.

Woody, powdery floral musk that blooms in the heat. Clean but not soapy, ladylike but not prissy. Nice projection too. I'm only a couple of hours into wear but it's still fairly strong so I'm guessing it lasts for a long time.

Melody Valentine

One of my first ever proper perfumes that I got in a set of minis in the late 90s. It's totally not my usual type of perfume and easily the most floral one I own but I love it. I usually hate any described as herbal but with this it's balanced by the florals and a hit of sweetness, just a hint. I'm surprised there's no peach note, it reminds me of a peach body cream from the 90s or St Ives peach scrub. I don't know if it's just because of the nostalgia it gives me or what but I think it's beautiful. A soft, gentle, powdery, chamomile, classic. I've just realised I only have half of my 30ml bottle left and I rarely wear it but I still need to buy another bottle next time I'm in town. I heard it was discontinued a couple of years ago but it's still available in the shops and online. I could have got a 100ml bottle for the same price I paid for this and I will next time. Just so I've always got it. If this was much stronger and projected much more I'd wear it much more often. Perfect for people who don't want an extremely cloying perfume in summer though. It'll probably be worn at least once this summer now I've remembered how much I love it.

luna k

Is It possible that I have a bad sample? Not getting any powder. Bits of indistinct florals and something that smells to me like ambrette or ambroxan. This doesn't smell like a 90's perfume, it smells like something from the past few years with an ambrette or ambroxan base instead of white musk and sandalwood.

If this is a genuine sample then it doesn't smell anything like how people are describing in comments.

Maybe spring hay fever is interfering with my sense of smell.

fragmig

Someone in the comments said it is a spring perfume - it’s true! Very suitable for that season, but also could be used all year long, IMO. It was also said it’s perfume for moms 😄 Funny to say like this, but also could be true. It has freshness, maturity, and is not annoying at all. For me it is such a beautiful and cosy scent, I never get bored of it. I wore it gladly in my 20’s, even to parties, I also wear it now, being a mom. I believe this perfume might be too old-schoolish for some people. But for me it is just beautiful, a perfume that could be worn whole life, in your young and older days, in your best moments, and worse ones. It’s like an old friend, a classic, a comfort. Also, it has good longevity and sillage.

mirrorghost

omg this is gorgeous. i believe it starts with bergamot, chamomile, violet, iris and freesia. it's very light, fresh and floral with a very subtle spiciness. it makes me think of the spiciness of lilies, but i guess it's coriander, though does not smell nearly as strong as coriander typically does. overall this is a dewy, green violet with soft spiciness and a bit of sweetness from other florals. just gorgeous for spring!

Freshskin

I stubbornly oversprayed a couple of times and i had a mild headache. Overspraying makes this scent a bit screechy in my opinion!

The secret with this fragrance is to spray only 1-2 sprays in the air and walk through it.
A lovely 🫧 “just out of the shower”🫧 squeaky clean trail will follow you for a couple of hours.

This is the type of perfume i occasionally love to wear after a bath/shower, when I’m enjoying a day at home but want to extend that soapy smell for a couple of hours or when I go out to run a few errands and want others to pick up on the “she just washed her hair” vibe.

Veronika95

If I can humbly say so myself as a 27 yo mom, this is 100% the best spring fragrance for moms. I think it's the chamomile, such a soothing maternal scent. It's also not that expensive so it's not a big splurge and it lasts throughout the day. What more do I need right now... Love it

miroona48

Looking at the note pyramid, it looks like a chaos, but to me, this is a lingering to my soul. It reminds me so much of my friends mom, so much that i bought it myself one year ago and I'm already at my second bottle. Its spring in a bottle, so gentle, airy and feminine but at the same time sophisticated and screams class. I absolutely love it

Lotte_Liese

If I had not first sprayed the 1881 Cerruti gentleman’s version first, I might have been more impressed with this offering.
It is comfortably old school in the floral cologne vibe it brings to the table with those galbanum, lily of the valley and bergamot notes, but that’s what I like about it. That’s the only thing I like about it because the florals are underwhelming. They don’t do much, it’s easily overpowered. But then again, it is an EDT, a very feminine, lovely and inoffensive EDT. Just not a stunner if you're used to heavier stuff. It's also not long lasting on my skin.
Suitable for fragrance lovers who need light work scents but still want to smell good.

pisuchan

To me it smells mineral like rocks from the beach, really good performance. Got a lot of whiffs during the day that are giving the impression the perfume is from the sky and not me smelling like it.

CarnationCelt

Absolutely retro, absolutely vintage, absolutely 90s. I'm vibrating with nostalgia over this one. As a 90s baby myself, there is something so comfortingly familiar about this unironic, slightly kitschy masterpiece - it's just so goddamn blithe and optimistic! I'm transported back to a ladies' powder room in a suburban church, a bowl of potpourri placed beside a faded pink vase of assorted flowers handpicked by the pastor's wife. Occasionally a whiff of half-finished camomile tea somewhere in the background. It doesn't sound all that nice when you read it, but it's actually weirdly soothing. The top and middle notes are hardly ugly, after all, and they are well-balanced by just the right base amount of musk and amber so that the overall scent doesn't come across maniacally floral.

For anyone who has no recollection of the 90s this will be just plain dated, but for those who remember when this was a contemporary scentboard, you will smell this and remember a simpler time. Not necessarily better, but simpler!

kristylynn

Tried a sample of this today and its presenting mainly floral musk on my skin. I'm gonna try it again in warmer weather and see if it changes.

Lalunalynn

The dry down of this is almost identical to Panache from the 80s. I had a blast from the past when I sniffed it today. Very similar.

ca$hm3re

If the original 90210 was set in Miami not Beverly Hills, this is how the main characters would smell.

This is such an unusual fragrance - definitely not a safe blind buy as others mention.

But I would say this is one of the safest ways to try a truly ‘retro’ style fragrance. It’s got a vintage vibe that is still palatable in 2023. I wasn’t alive in the 90s but could picture this being the kind of thing my mum would’ve worn then and it being the ‘it’ girl of it’s day.

It’s a very hard fragrance to describe in terms of notes, but as I say, the image it connotes for me is the cool girl of the 90s but specifically in a hot climate. I think I will enjoy this one more when the weather heats up, as on my skin in January it’s very harsh and strong.

I will enjoy ‘playing a character’ with this one, as it’s not inherently a ‘me’ fragrance. I am finding it challenging upon first receiving it, but I look forward to trying it out more and working out how to make it my own.

If you love traditional floral scents and want to try something a little out of your comfort zone, this is a good choice.

My guilty pleasures

NamertBaykus

I believe this is one of the scents that can be perceived positively or negatively depending on the wearer. I didn't like it on its own but I feel like I could see the quality in it better if I smelled it on a friendly middle-aged lady with a warm smile.

MySkin

Powdery, soft, herbal and warm. Reminds me of the old days.
There is something that irritates me in the first few minutes ...but then it disappeares and the flowers take the front seat.
Old style, nostalgic scent, feels cozy in the cooler days...
I'd wear it all year round though...
It's a scent for when you don't know what you feel like wearing... :-)

clairedaloon

This was a blind buy because of the nostalgia and it took me back as soon as I smelt it. I recognised the scent straight away. However, there is a slight rubbery smell, almost like how your hands smell after wearing rubber gloves (or if anyone is a gardener, what your hands smell like if you’ve touched geranium leaves) and although fairly subtle and not always there, when it does appear it is quite off putting. I also don’t remember it being there back in the day.

This does smell retro, it smells like an older perfume but somehow still manages to smell fairly modern. When it heats up on my skin it becomes this gorgeous creamy powdery floral scent. I’m still rediscovering this fragrance, so will review again once I have worn it enough.

Petrichor31

I thought this might be a safe blind buy. I was wrong. The geranium note stuck out like a sore thumb and spoiled it for me.

lujain00

This smelt like straight up herbal on me. I got no powderyness or creaminess. Had to sell it.

twojtrener

I like light, clean, soapy scents, this was recommended to me as such. I was extremely dissapointed.Just like some other people here I smell something rubbery when I spray it on my skin. The rubber overpowers everything else making this unwearable and almost unbearable for me. The first time I wore it I sprayed it on my neck and had to scrub it off. I thought that maybe my body chemistry is at fault here so I tried spraying it lower on my body, on clothes and scarves. The rubber is always there. I wish I knew which note smells like that to me. I have a similar issue with CK Women.

Titine

Awful chamomile that I could not stand. It was a gift and had to give away again.

This is a beautifully blended floral bouquet, I keep sniffing my wrists throughout the day because I miss it. A wonderful cozy, cuddly, soapy scent that makes you feel safe.

Mona708

This is another scent that benefits from heat- either yours, or the weather. It’s very cozy and soothing; the chamomile here puts me in mind of that from either Escape or Sunflowers. I was fortunate enough to test the EDT and I was impressed with the longevity ( ~7 hours). I’m considering getting a bottle down the line, especially if I can find the EDP 🥰

sibaraa

A nice, and creamy powdery scent. I love it.

marrrr

Ive been searching for this smell for ages now. Now Ive found it, inside of the NafNaf store in my town in the 90s smelled just like this. For a long time, i thought it was a fragrance by NafNaf so ive been looking at the wrong ones!! As a fan of the 90s scents(tribu, eden etc.) And wanting to capture something from my childhood, I'm loving this. To me its a sweet daisy. Dry down smells like a baby lotion on my skin

djouri

It's a gentle fragrance, very calming very soft and feminin with a luxuous type of scent, but i do not like it for my self for some reasons:
The sillage is weak it's a skin scent
The scent is too calming and too mature
Something in this perfume gives me nausea

ichi

Very powdery and gentle, with an intimate feel. A little bit too soft and angelic for me to wear on its own, but as a base for layering - wow. I get compliments every time I use this to layer, including strangers coming up and asking what I'm wearing.

Katou117

I know this isn't a new perfume, on contrary, it's been around for quite a long time but I just discovered it. At first I wasn't sure. It was a blind buy and I thought it would be a failed blind buy. First spray ouffff very very chamomile and herbal. I don't really want to smell like chamomile tea 😁 BUT when you wait a bit for it to dry, it changes a lot. The herbal fades more and more and leaves place to other notes that blend very well. I can not say which note I perceive the most. Everything is so well balanced but it turns into a very pleasant powdery floral. Some people have called it a "mom scent", yes it may be a "mom scent" but I don't care. I'm old enough to be a mother, even though I'm not, and I really like how it smells after it has dried a little bit so I don't care about this cliché of mom scent. If you have a chance to try it it's worth the try.

Enrium

1881 is a cheap-and-cheerful powdery floral "mom" scent from the 1990s that was perhaps more of a success in the US than here in Ireland. It didn't catch my interest for a long time, being a permanent fixture of discount shops like TK Maxx, but it is repeatedly recommended by reviewers. I bought a vintage miniature from the 1990s in order to smell 1881 as it was originally (in case of reformulation).

1881 opens with some bright citrus notes that give way to powdery florals fairly quickly. Iris is (unusually) present from the beginning, while a yellow floral accord blooms. Polleny, sweet mimosa, alongside grassy narcissus are most evident, with a comforting chamomile note adding a soft herbal quality. Some soft, powdery rose is present in the background.

As it develops, hazy galbanum adds greenness, complementing the powdery florals, and some subtle white florals add body in the background. The coriander adds a hint of peppery spice. The drydown is woody, with balsamic amber present as it dries down. Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting - the performance is excellent for an EDT.

Gentle and soothing, yet with steady, decent longevity, it is "motherly" in more ways than one. The florals and galbanum are vintage in style, yet feel timeless. 1881 is a transeasonal day scent. Soft yet strong femininity in a bottle. 4/5.

This is real gem. I found this perfume years ago from Kathleen Lights video about most lasting perfumes back then. And she was right! This is edt but it doesn't perform as edt for sure. It's longer lasting that many edp's I have. It's very strong but very gentle scent. The camomile is so soothing, that's why it's considered to be a mom scent I think. It's just soothing and pretty and safe and gentle... I like to wear it when I go for a stroll with my 1yo. It's a good mom vibe 🥰

Efrosini

I associate this with my mother in the 90's wearing a thick white knitted cotton sweater. It's a 'mom' smell. Kind personality, caring. It doesn't fit me because I want to attract attention to myself and be slightly offensive, while at the same time beautiful and intriguing.
Needless to say this isn't for me.

Skinscents4Fusspots

This is one of the most powerful (yet oddly also super gentle) feminine musks I've every smelt. It is a soft and flowery, musky, powder bomb. In a way it reminds me of some very gentle powdery makeup... a powder puff of a fragrance.

You have to spray this one onto your skin and let it dry down and warm up. You cannot get a vibe for this from the bottle, on card, or even in the first spray. It's one that needs skin to blossom.... Like Juliette has a Gun Not a Perfume but a million times nicer in every conceivable way (no offence meant if you like that one!). When it dries down it becomes sweet and cosy and powdery. The florals are not sharp or screechy - the chamomile is putting the work in to make this so comforting and soothing, there is a touch of vanilla that gives it a heavenly but subtle sweetness and the musk is deep and warm.... your skin but so, SO much better. It genuinely makes me feel so sexy! Not in a obvious or overt way, but in a soft and gentle, super feminine way. This one also lasts all day (and into the next day sometimes too!) and projects pretty well, but it's not strong or cloying at all. It's not a modern scent profile but it's not in any way dated or vintage smelling. It's actually perfect in my opinion.

I don't know if everyone's skin will react in the same way, but this perfume with my skin chemistry creates something wildly good.

LadyM

Very 90's, very powdery, very feminine. I fully agree with the comment of @clebermaximo, nothing to add. 💐LOVE IT ❤️

grapefruit352

Quite okay fragrance, will not hurt anybody, just did not impress that much. Something between Dilis and Anais Anais.

Audrey11

I've used this perfume some 25 years ago, and as far as I can remember it was a sillage bomb. But I've purchased this perfume a while ago, in well known perfume shop, not from some suspicious web site, and looks like something very wrong happened with it. Shortly after application I can barely smell it on 10 cm distance, and after an hour I feel it if I press my nose in it. Is it the same smell as it was 25 years ago I can't tell because it is so weak. Either it is very badly reformulated or it is heavily diluted. The tester from the shop behaved the same way, so I don't think there is something wrong with my bottle.
Interesting, though, I can smell it after 8 hours, but also if I rub my nose on it. Looks like if I want to feel it I will have to bath myself in it.

Marinisa382

I love how this smells for the first two hours or so - a dreamy floral and was inclined to order a second bottle the first time I sprayed it. Unfortunately, after a while an extremely musky base takes over and ruins it. I hate musk and this turns into almost a Jovan musk scent And all the flowers disappear. If you're into it, this will delight you, the longevity is impressive so that's a plus if you like it. Wish I could find a similar fragrance without the musk

clebermaximo

At first spray, it is very delicate and a little aquatic. Not offensive and very office friendly... After a couple of minutes it really changes to a powdery smell with prominent delicate roses . Quite pleasant and elegant, bur stronger than its initial smell.
It has a 90s vibe, minimalist in a certain way. Although it shouts feminine, there is something a little masculine in its dry down - maybe the combo woods/musk/amber goes that path. But do not get me wrong: it is quite soft and lovely, not a macho lumberjack smell.
It may not suit teenagers but it surely suits someone looking for something sophisticated. If you like powdery fragrances it is a must have.

d_silent_one

I am trying so hard to like this. The fragrance is fine, but why do I get a rubbery smell out of it? I wonder what makes it feel that way? It's a shame. I've given it a few chances on different days and it always smells of a thin rubber to me, not like a car tire, but more like a textile rubber, or a rubbery surface. The rest of the fragrance minus the rubber facet would make me stay with it.

malikun

the original version was very luscious, with rich coriander, rose and chamomile but the recent version that I got is different so it is just a like. But old version would be love <3. Although I got a compliment at work once while wearing this one :)

Vicki1881

Great perfume. It was a gift for my mother, but I use it too, because I just fell inlove with the smell. For me it smells clean, fresh, but definently has depth into it. It's a safe blind buy. It's really long lasting, people around me can still smell it after all day of wearing it. When I enter a room the perfume just fills it. I definitely recommend it, if you're a fan of floral perfumes.

Before I come to the floral fragrance "1881 pour Femme", a few words about Nino Cerruti, who passed away a few days ago at the age of 91:
In 1950, at the age of 20, Cerruti inherited the family business in Biella, Piedmont. He founded his first menswear company near Milan in 1957. Armani began his career with this company in the mid-1960s.
In 1967, Cerruti founded the luxury men's fashion house "Cerruti 1881" in Paris, but continued to have production in Italy. Cerruti was soon in demand in Hollywood, too, and his designs were worn in front of and behind the camera by stars such as Michael Douglas, Richard Gere, Jack Nicholson and Robert Redford. Cerruti also launched a women's line, as well as perfumes (including 1881 pour Femme), watches, accessories and leather goods. Cerruti sold the company in the early 2000s. He designed his last collection for spring/summer 2020.
Armani recognized Cerruti as a creative entrepreneur with "a keen eye, a genuine curiosity, an ability to be daring".

About the scent:

In my opinion, "1881 pour Femme" is a fabulous, fresh, floral, woody and also spicy fragrance that is second to none. It's the oldest fragrance in my collection (and that's saying something, I'm always coming and going). It's a fragrance that makes me feel fresh and cared for all day long... I can't describe it any other way. The chamomile gives the fragrance its own character, bergamot and coriander add freshness and spice, and a colorful bouquet of jasmine, freesia, mimosa and iris brings powderiness into it. Finally, woods (among others) round off the work harmoniously.
It really lasts a long time (it feels like forever), from morning to night, and is easy to hear, i.e. the sillage is also great. The fragrance has been around since 1995. IMO it has not been reformulated, only the bottle has been slightly changed (different cap).
It's always well received - even my partner, who doesn't usually like flowery scents, likes it!
The fragrance is inexpensive and therefore flies a bit under the radar, but completely wrongly. It looks elegant and noble, and some niche fragrances can hide in comparison.
"1881 pour Femme" is timeless and simply has style, like Cerruti's fashion!

d_silent_one

Man, I really wanted to love this but I'm having a problem with it: why does it smell kind of rubbery on my skin?

jazzfan

Sometime in the '90, my snobish sister recived a small bottle of this from this really nice lady, let's call her M. Her reaction was, "It came from M, so it must be good." While M was, and I suppose still is, delightfull human being, my sister's caracter leaves much to be desired. She has great qualities, but good taste and tact are not among them.
As much as I appreciate this lovely perfume, my memory has tainted it. Often I'm tempted to order it, it has become very affordable and that was not allways the case. Sense of smell is the most primal and long lasting sense we have. It is also intertwined with emotions. Some perfumes deserve the effort of separating them from those emotions and making a new ones with them.

GUADELUPA

The classic floral-musky fragrance. In winter it's mimosa and chamomile, in summer it's too much musk. Musk is too animalistic here. So, be careful using it in summer!

floszra

Powdery mimosa, perfect for job interviews, exams, etc., you cannot make a mistake by wearing this.

Advatra

The smell of every small town girl that ever shunned me.

cz963214

This would be an excellent perfume if it did not smell so bitter to my nose. Such a pity, because I love the overall feel of it. But I can’t help but think of a tea bag left in the cup for too long, and the tea turned bitter.

AndrewVioraLondon

I have been wearing this since the mid to late 1990s. It's bright, cheerful and I like the powdery-floral mimosa/iris combo as it's heaven. Always get compliments when I wear it. Sure it leans feminine but I really dislike the male version.

roxyjuliet

Gosh, this brings me back to the 1990's. I remember the scent although I never wore it at the time. I have the modern reformulation which seems true to the original. Simple description - A watery, powdery floral with aromatic herbal notes. It's just lovely and very warm weather appropriate. Good longevity. If you like the Hermes Jardin Line or Balenciaga Florabotanica, you are likely to appreciate this fragrance.

SaturnSmiled

Cerruti was one of those scents I overlooked in the beginning when I first tried it several years back. A simple 'its okay' followed by using up the sample without much thought. Over the years, I found myself drawn to picking it up and spritzing on when rummaging perfume sections. A part of me really felt like I should like this scent more. Cue me deciding to nab a large decant of it in 2021 and proving myself right.

I hadn't really thought about just how 90s this scent smells, but the fact that I am properly sitting with it again now that my nose and taste has evolved has made that apparent. This smells like my childhood, a scent I used to smell all the time and, now I'm solidly in my 30s this is delightful to me. It's soft, soapy, musky clean floral. Mimosa is a scary note for me but here it's tempered so beautifully by the chamomile. It's not quite chamo-tea but it's close. It does smell 'perfumey' but in a way that is soothing. It vaguely reminds me of Vera Wang's Sheer Veil, another scent I debated over quite a deal.

Definitely considering a FB of this now. Glad I did not give up on this!

jomxlohx

Just love this, suits my skin chemistry. Calm, collected and quietly confident. Some people say it smells old and granny-ish, I think it’s unique smelling. Doesn’t smell like anything and everything else that’s been overdone and copied (I hope it stays that way). A classic. How I miss the 90s.

vrinsun

Masterpiece!! Brings back so much good memories, even as a little kid i was in love with this scent and it definitely didn’t change.
After many years i decided to get a bottle for myself, and no regrets!
Clean powdery scent, smells like a fresh flower bouquet😍
The first few minutes after spraying it, i get a strong coriander smell which i really hate but it fades away after a few minutes

Edit: I ended up giving it to my mom.. i feel like it doesn't fit me, my personality.. it's too elegant and mature

DieT CroaK

I know this isn’t unique but sometimes when I smell a perfume, my mind instantly makes a connection to a movie, a piece of art, a book or as in this case, a song. When I smelled 1881, all I heard in my mind was Donna Summer’s I Feel Love.

Ooooooooh… It’s so good, it’s so good, it’s so good, it’s so good, it’s SO good…

That song always entrances me and makes me feel like I am falling. It’s a pure eargasm. Her honey vocals reverberating astrally and harmonizing perfectly with the synthesizers. To me, that is the exact sensation of this perfume!

I was convinced from the reviews here to buy the original version of this perfume with the pink and white marble top rather than the newer rose gold version. Firstly, this bottle looks so chic and elegant in person. That alone would make it worth having. But the glory doesn’t end there. I received this perfume on a day that I was testing out two others and instantly, this one rose above and commanded attention. Not in the way that would be repugnant or annoying. It was a subtle, charismatic graceful beckoning. It’s very come hither. Soapy, yes. Timeless, yes. Fresh, yes. I am not getting what people could dub “old lady”. It definitely has an old-fashioned vibe but modern nuances are clearly here. I know that I have smelled this before which also gives it a comforting quality to me. Instantly, I was reminded of a bubble bath gel that I used to love as a kid. Judging by the notes and accords that were listed, I was thinking wow. This is going to smell like a lot. You would think almost too much. But no. It’s very simple. This has some powdery and green accords also. There’s a little bit of everything here but it manages not to be too much of any one thing. I think it’s the chamomile that’s grounding and sedating the fragrance. If over-sprayed, this most likely could be too much. I can’t believe how hard I have fallen for this. Longevity is superb and the way that it projects is fascinating. Again, when used in small doses, it’s not overwhelming but the right amount of ooomph. Every time I would make a movement, I could smell this lingering. People in close proximity could likely think this is your shampoo or your detergent. I feel like not too many people talk about this one. It would completely never even made a ping on my radar if not for this site and what a shame that would be! This easily takes the cake among a lot of the bland, derivative perfumes that are popular right now. I can’t believe how cheap this is. Even the vintage version was very moderately priced. There’s really something special here and it’s becoming something that I want to reach for every single day. It’s summer and yet the heat intensifies the tranquil, effervescent qualities of 1881. This reminds me a little bit of one of my favorites of all time, Love Chloe. I hate using it though because it’s so hard to come across now. 1881 is a good supplement and do I dare say that I actually prefer it? I do! This is signature and backup worthy. Whenever I have an important event or a special day, I think it’s Cerutti today! It just helps me feel my best. God, I really love this. Ahhhh, yes. A Frag-gasm 😍🥰

Edit:

I recently got a newer bottle of 1881 with the gold cap. I have to agree with both opinions of the reformulation. Yes, there is something undeniably more special in the vintage. It’s more bubbly if that makes sense. As it dries down, it becomes basically the same. I’m not disappointed with the gold cap whatsoever. The newer version feels a tiny bit more diluted and powdery. Longevity and sillage perform very similarly. The vintage bottle is still way prettier in my opinion. Even though they are a little harder to come by, seek out a vintage UK bottle particularly if you are already familiar with this fragrance and want the best version possible.

Vintage: A+, reformulation: B+

Sentir_bonne

I hate this on other people (probably because a girl I went to college with seemed to bathe in the stuff, it gave me a horrible headache and put me off for years). But my mum bought me a bottle 6 or 7 years ago and I was pleasantly surprised that the obnoxious 90s smell had changed. I am on my second bottle since then. On me it smells like a delicate tea, with a slight hint of lavender and violet. I don’t really smell rose. It lasts a long time too. Yes, still have to be careful with the sillage but my goodness it’s value for money. I love the way the bottle fits in my palm too. I have the version with the rose gold cap. It’s a nice everyday fragrance perfect for summer.

A lot of people here on Fragrantica say this perfume is “ BEAUTIFUL “ “ AMAZING “ well they are correct!
This is a love for me. I was introduced to this perfume many decades ago, when a friend of mine, came to visit and stay for a girlie weekend. She was wearing this. That was back in the late 90s. On her it was very creamy, smooth and floral. It had a MASSIVE trail.
I liked it, but never wore it. I tried it, some years later, and liked it.
Anyway, fast forward to 2021, and I had a little bottle, lying around, actually for over a year!! Lol and I was thinking of getting rid of it. I tried it on, one last time, and WOW! Just WOW!
I’m in love. This is signature worthy indeed.
I love the dry down the best. I get wafts if musk and soft sandalwood mainly.
It definitely leaves a trail, and the performance is insane!!
It’s one of those perfumes, that you feel. It’s not that strong, but gentle creeps up on you. If you get my drift.
It’s subtle, yet very present. Floral. But not overwhelming floral. Just beautifully blended.
Lasts all day, amazing sillage.
And for those very rude people that say old lady! There is nothing old about this.
Soon you will be of a certain age, and people younger will say Brittney spears perfume smells old. And what will you say?
This is classic. And a beautiful one at that.
Timeless, unforgettable, warm floral. Yet fresh too.
I bought myself another bottle 50ml of the bay. Never want to be without this one. I plan to get more.

faustbanana

After reading reviews noting how this was thee hot fragrance of the 90s, I searched for a sample because I had no recollection of it whatsoever, and was excited to check out a classic and still well-loved scent. (Also, what a gorgeous bottle.)

Well.. I'm disappointed. Far too powdery, creamy and sweet for my taste. I was hoping for some sharp 90s floral, but this is very muted and, to me, old-fashioned. Violet can go either way for me and, unfortunately, it's a turn-off in this scent. But I can see why so many love it - it is indeed very unique.

With older samples, I do wonder if the age stands in the way of experiencing the fullness and nuance of a fragrance as intended. Not much I can do about that but include it as a caveat.

Even though I didn't care for it, I did get a shot of nostalgia when I realized this was what my best friend's cool older sister wore back in the day, so I think I may have been a couple of years too young to experience its heyday. Now I know where to place it in the pantheon of 90s powerhouses!

Guccibaby46

I wore this all the time back when it was first released in the nineties, so did just about everyone else. Unmistakable smell, once you smell it you never forget it. Even now I know when someone is wearing this it’s that distinct. Beautiful woody floral, the woody notes balance well with the florals making it not overly floral add the coriander and it’s a herbaceous border.
I have yet to come across anything that is remotely like this, it truly is one of a kind. Fresh, cosy comforting all rolled into one. I guess that’s why it’s stood the test of time.

Neuropunkt

This perfume brings back so many good memories and makes me super nostalgic. The fragrance itself is a timeless masterpiece. It's incredibly complex. I've never smelled anything alike and I doubt there's anything similar on the market. Once you smell Cerruti 1881 it will get tattooed into your olfactory database. It's warm creamy fruity flowery layers will keep unfolding beautifully on your skin throughout the day until there's only delicate creamy powdery comfort left and you begin to miss it. It can be worn close to skin, subtle and discrete yet intriguing and intimate. But it absolutely has the potential of becoming signature scent. It's a warm hug in a bottle and it's ridiculously inexpensive for the aura it projects. I totally recommend it as a blind buy.

Khansa Nadeem123

If you are looking for a unique floral woody and cozy scent with good silage and longevity Cerutti 1881 is definitely going to be your favourite
Perfect blend of bergamot, sandalwood and musk makes it very welcoming and cozy
My mother used to wear this and every time i spary this, it reminds me of her warmth

SailorV

I have dismissed 1881 for a long time because I found it boring when I was a teenager. Now that I'm older and more experienced with different scents I appreciate florals more, so I retried it and changed my mind 180°.
It's a soft, fresh and clean scent, but it's actually quite distinctive and stands out from other perfumes.
Chamomile is not a very common note in fragrances and it's certainly the main star in 1881. It's a powdery floral with a little herbal, tea-like edge. The second flower that really stands out to me is freesia with its light watery sweetness, which pairs so well with the chamomile. I can also sense some rose, mimosa and iris, but it really is such a blended, balanced composition that none of them stand out. It's one of those older scents with a long, long notes list that really feels like they added a droplet of this and a droplet of that to create something completely new.
Even though it is not necessarily a warm scent, I find this very cozy and enveloping. The basenotes of musk, sandalwood and just a hint of vanilla are subtle, but they make the florals smell really rounded with no sharpness left.

This is a beautiful daytime scent for any time of the year. I can't imagine that many would choose this for a party or a hot date, but I think that its calming aura would also work wonderfully as a bedtime scent, if you use perfume before you go to sleep. It's just so soft and soothing.

gpaisley

1881 Cerruti for women is a delicate soft floral scent... to my nose, the top notes smell of a timid rose and chamomile tea. This perfume reminds me exactly of TOMMY GIRL, except 1881 Cerruti is like a lighter version of Tommy Girl. Tommy Girl is a bit more sharp and acidic and citrusy in the opening, but they both share a smiliar DNA - it must be the tea note! If you like TOMMY GIRL, I believe you will love 1881 CERRUTI as it's similar but lighter, softer, and more mellow.

1881 Cerruti also reminds me a little of Hugo Woman because they are both a little bit fruity as well.

KittyDeBeauvoir

Fresh, best, and leave none for the rest!

I got a small bottle of this perfume on the advice of GinCatsBooks (#superfan), and what I got was *not* what I was expecting.
It took a hot minute, but this beauty grew on me.

One first spray, I get coriander. Not even kidding. The most herbaceous whopper of a perfume I have EVER smelled! I may as well have been slicing and dicing coriander like a Master Chef after spraying this. For those who hate coriander...well, if you just hate the taste; no biggie, but if you hate the smell as well - steer well clear.

Then the Almighty Universal Calmer, Chamomile, makes her entrance. Gently petting you on the head and whispering lullabies in your ear, she lulls you into an olfactory doze.
It is true that mimosa is the most dominant floral note here, and it does smell yellow and optimistic. Whatever that means.
I also get elegant iris (not in a cosmetic-scent kind of way, though), a little rose, and sweet freesia. Seeing as there's so many naturalistic notes in here; you could tell me I'm smelling poison ivy, and I'd believe you.

This is super-calming, super-fresh, super-natural, super-herbaceous. A little "Mumsy" in a sense, but don't take that as an insult.
I'm watching you. Don't do it.

Let's take a moment to appreciate the bottle:
That rose-gold lid and frosted bottle is quietly divine, and the small, palm-fitting oval shape makes me happeh!

Overall, this is a scent I was initially overwhelmed by from the coriander and chamomile notes, yet it persuaded me to trust it.
I am here for it.
Non, je ne regrette rien.

Kitty rating: 8/10.

scentobsessed01

Smells like a fresh clean shower on some days. On some other days, it smells like chamomile tea. Either way, it is nice. This one is a skin scent. Best to spray on your skin after a shower before you go on to layer with other perfumes. It is light and does not project, although a bit stronger than you would assume as you can still smell it on you after a long day.

lovePerfumes222

this is actually a lovely floral-powdery scent. i blind bought this, wanted something fresh and calm i could wear around the house and gotta say it was a perfect choice. although i am not a huge fan of powdery scents, this one is very pleasant. also very office friendly and in general a good calm everyday scent.

alsa7

When I got this perfume, I thought it was green.
Now, after it had time to sit and rest, it smells mostly powdery to me. A pleasant powdery smell, clean.
I can see how this was a staple 3 decades ago.
At the same time, it contrasts so much with what perfumes are these days. So if you want to make a change, this perfume is something else.

Silver Lining

May I just say how wrong I was for dismissing this, and for doing it for so long?!
I always thought it was nice, sure, but I placed it in the drawer of office-safe crowd-pleasers, clean, feminine, but that's it, that's all there is to it. My mom has been wearing it for many years, and I even bought it for her couple of times, not ever thinking much of it, to be honest.
But recently, while sniffing through my mom's collection, I finally *got* it! Sure, there's nothing groundbreaking here, but it's just gorgeus, very, very clean floral, chamomile being the most prominent, powdery, with a good amount of green, woodsy notes going on in the background. Like many reviews here say, it really is comforting, like a hug, and effortlessly classic at the same time. Beautiful. And no, to me it doesn't smell the least bit dated.
So obviously, what I had to do was to confiscate her bottle (just borrowed it, lol) and I've been wearing it several times lately, it works really well now, in the springtime. Longevity is moderate to solid, with moderate sillage. I'm very happy with it 🤗

Kerr27

1881 is a really unique scent with a lot going on. Overall it comes off to me as powdery, floral and clean with some underlying herbal elements to it. I find it extremely sexy smelling and very good value for money. It’s a classic!

Jana711xx

The must have perfume of it’s time, for a few years in the mid 90s everywhere you went it seemed you were forever walking through a cloud of 1881. I had just started working in the City of London when this was first launched and literally everyone was wearing it!! These days it appears to me to be very dated, nice but dated...it had it’s day but it is not something I would purchase now

sarage

This is my second review. I wanted to write it, because I actually started wearing 1881 more and discovered that I actually like this mimosa-chamomile scent a lot. I discovered it has a very warm, feminine character, I'd say it's almost motherly. :) A woman with warm heart who loves her family and is kind to others - this is the smell of a person like that. I'm not claiming I'm like that, but the perfume has this type of character in my opinion.

Clockwise

I first noticed this scent on a colleague of mine and had to have it immediately. That was 5 years ago and I still love it and keep buying it.
I came across some good perfumes since, but never was mesmerized. The problem is that I only notice perfumes on people and very often am uncomfortable asking what the perfume was.
This smells so effortlessly amazing, not aggressive - but so noticeable, not too sweet - but sweet, so clean - but not cheap fresh.
I really do love it.

violinorama

Definitely characteristic and different parfum. Always classic and classy despite of eau de toilet version.

This is a very powdery scent. I can only smell chamomile and mimosa. I think the powderness comes from the iris. I like this, it gives me comfort. However, I need to be in mood to wear this

soumayaela

Nothing special, just a clean floral soapy scent! Don't get fooled but all the ingredients listed here, it smells so simple though!
I spray it after shower (just to finish the bottle) because i don't imagine myself wearing it out, it doesn't represent me as a person or as a woman! It lacks personality and i prefer more bold and sexy perfumes
Even thoug it's an offensive perfume, don't overspray, it gives instant headaches!! But still the longevity is very very bad, 1 hour later you won't be able to smell it. And sillage is also mediocre no one will notice it
Back in the days it was very popular and the quality was outstanding, maybe my taste has changed or they reformulated it!

Don't buy it you'll smell cheap and old!!

It's a miss for me! 4/10

People in comments should always write which version of the perfume and of which year they are talking about. Cerrutti eau de parfume in this case too, it was so much better long time ago and now it is just something else.
Those fragrances are even hardly can be compared.. The current newer version in eau de toilette is so much watered down and sound plastic and faint. It costs cheaply..but still, does it makes sense..

MaryRonja

I loved this when smelling the bottle and at first spritz. Sadly, the dry down smells like a boring masculine scent on me, so I had to shower it off. I will spray it on clothes only to see if it keeps its initial floral freshness.

lahuti98

It was my everyday parfume for a long time. Nothing special, a clean, fresh scent. Yellow flower is more obvious on me which is not actually for me

Mischa.ela

Oh my... I just sprayed this on my wrist today, after a looong time... And it instantly brought back so many memories. Well okay, nothing in particular, but I just remembered how much me and my mom (even my grandma!) loved... LOVED this one. We used to wear it for years. And maybe I was too young at that time, to wear a perfume like this, but I just loved the smell of it. It just never occured to me that it smells like and "old lady" or something like that. To me... It's just a nice powdery daytime perfume for pretty much every age category.
I might buy a FB again, at least a 50ml one :)

riabanana

A very nice, inoffensive floral. I can't smell the rose- luckily- rose makes me nauseous. I got the 30 ml one as a blind buy and after I tried it, I had to order the 100 ml too immediately. It's just... floral. Not really much to say about it. I can't see how anyone could dislike this scent. I have a hair mask that smells exactly like it. Despite being a perfume from 1995, it totally holds up. I visited my grandma for Christmas, while keeping distance of course, and I see a 100 ml Cerruti 1881 perfume on her bedside table, like half of it gone already and I'm like "Is this your perfume grandma??" and she's like "Yes?" and I just gave her a thumbs up and told her we have a similar taste. It was cute.

bel.gravia

I would suggest 1881 for a cold autumn's night. It is a huge bouquet of flowers, green, lightly spiced. I smells loads of roses, jasmine flowers, irises - a comforting powdered veil. To me this perfume sits in the same category as Beauty Arden and Flower Kenzo. They are all floral, well balanced, powdery, lightly spicy, evokes feelings of calm joy and some autumn nostalgia.

sarage

I bought this without testing (online shop, I've never seen this in any perfume departments) trusting the very positive reviews in You Tube and here. I have a small 30 ml bottle of eau de toilette and I was disappointed that it looked so cheap compared to it's pictures. The cap is a light plastic one, the bottle very simple.
The scent is very nice, like a cup of chamomile tea. Like the tea does not have much taste, just a little so you know there is something else than water in it, so is the fragrance. It's very lame. First I did not smell anything, and I have a very sensitive nose that smells everything! I had to spray many times to get the idea of the smell. It's a soft, soapy floral, like a very early spring day. It's pretty and definitely office friendly. I like the scent and wish it performed better. My husband said he smells it and likes it. This will never fill the room, it's shy and modest.
This will be my work day scent in the spring, and something I wear after sauna.
I think most of the very positive reviews were based on the older version, maybe edp, of this scent.
The one I have is more like a body spray - and to be fair, most of my body sprays have more lasting power and bigger sillage than Cerruti 1881 edt.
The bottle was very affordable, so it's not a big loss of money, but I did expect more quality. The scent is nice but too weak, and I doubt can it have all those notes mentioned..

Ok, this fragrance was my signature scent for about 25 years! I received My first bottle On my 16th birthday (In the 90’s). I then wore it for every occasion; First dates, first kisses, partying, weddings, getting married, going to work, going to shops, being cosy at home. At that point I wasn’t too fussed about trying different fragrances or the fact that a fragrance can be worn like an accessory - changing it depending on mood or attire. This fragrance to me always felt sweet, sexy, fresh, powdery, clean, slightly aquatic, floral and also a bit ‘different’. There have been reformulations along the way but the overall juice has felt the same and given off the same ‘vibe’ - the depth and projection of the scent has probably been the thing that’s changed the most. I can’t objectively review this fragrance purely because of the memories it evokes - Is it a ‘grandma’ scent? I don’t think so. (Unless your cool Grandma wears it!) Do I wear it all the time now? No, my perfume collection has grown and so has my appreciation for more oriental, , woody and gourmand fragrances. Will I always have a bottle? Most likely yes, for those moments I want an olfactory trip down memory lane or when I want to grab an easy wear.

CarlG_Ambergris

I’m a man and I wear this absolutely gorgeous fragrance. I get really subtle green Irish tweed (creed) vibes from it. I can’t believe lavender is not in the note breakdown maybe it’s iris I’m picking up. It is also very similar to the opening of Tres Nuit by Armaf.

Tarkamilla

I am still so sad and angry as well about the current version of this perfume, although I have discovered this change years ago.
I used to had a full bottle around 1998 - marbled peach coloured cap, EDP version - and that was beautiful and very-very rich, classy, soft and powdery with incredible lasting power.
Current version - only EDT can be purchased - is the light shadow of the original one, watered down smell with sad and synthetic camille. It smells now very cheap and dated.

This is my go-to when I want to feel clean and put-together, but don't want to seem overdressed or over-anything.

The white button-down shirt of perfumes - versatile, classic and effortless.

I wear this sometimes and i think its good. Lasting power is good aswell.
Not many what i know wearing it.
Its a nice bottle.

Oooh! this stuff is the ultimate comfort scent for me, and I hope it never gets discontinued. My adventures with 1881 started during Christmas 2015 when both my mother and my sister in law got gifted bottles of 1881, I was obsessed with this scent on both of them, its warm, clean, soft, bit like a big comforting hug off of a best friend or a mother figure.

I'd always sneak spritzes of it when I saw testers of it about, whenever I'd smell it, I'd always think of either my sister in law or my mother, I ended up purchasing a bottle of it and subsequently got a 30ml bottle for traveling, it always without fail gets compliments. Compliments range from "you smell so snuggly" to "you smell so clean", whenever I feel low, I always reach for it.

Its hard for me to pull out the various notes, its so well blended that they all mesh together and become this gorgeous, powdery, herbal musk, it reminds me of when you step out of a cool shower on a warm morning, slip on a fresh cotton t-shirt, have a cup of herbal tea or coffee and you leave to go on a walk through a wild flower meadow, I will say though, that during intense summer heat, 1881 does become heavy and cloying, even with light application, but during cooler summer days and, actually, year round 1881 is perfect, its very much a "my best friend" type of scent.

Longevity is amazing for an EdT, easily 12+ hours of wear with a moderate silage, very ageless and I've smelt it on people who are also the same age group as me (20-28) and it smells wonderful, appropriate and fresh, a total GEM of a fragrance!

Amy Ann

Oh Lord, if I ever hear "it's good if you're over 30" etc I m gonna hunt you down. It's a perfume, a perfume have no age, if you like Cerutti 1881 and you have 16 wear it dear! Cerutti is one of the few feminist brands that is still moving and fortunately has remained in the same clean direction, a few years ago it was the 3rd feminist brand in a top dominated by Escada, not the one you see today, the one who into a coma after the death of M.L. and later died. Cerutti perfumes were with Escada, Estee, Arden, Marina De Bourbon etc. the most worn perfumes in European feminist lodges.Personally, I have never particularly liked this, it is a feminist perfume, refined, fresh, natural, non-aldehydic, elegant and present but without being stifling and most importantly it is cold, because my dear girls feminist perfumes are cold! Not in the sense of fresh perfume or allegory, a feminist perfume can be warm because it has an amber or a musk but it is a fragrance that maintains respect and formality, is not candy, does not smell of sex, rose fields or the Red zone. In this case, although Cerutti falls into this category, for me it was wearable but not lovable because it has an overly pronounced herbal smell in the second base, practically on me in the second base I can't feel any floral influence besides, I personally like the white flowers but I can't feel it in this perfume, and the violet note is too little shown to my nose. But besides that, it's a nice scent, and if a 15-year-old girl likes it, wear it! Maybe who knows will influence her and turn her into a strong, educated and moral, high career young woman.

evilscent

Quite pleasant - I’m surprised this smells slightly aquatic, but I also get what I was looking for, the smell of pollen in the spring when the plants come alive! Perhaps it’s the chamomile and mimosa. This to me is like a softer sibling of Pleasures or Romance. No screechiness at all. As it develops I’m not smelling the initial aquatic note - it’s blending down into warmth and pollen. This is definitely what I was looking for when I was on the hunt for something that smelt like a sunny meadow.

Anna Pantherina

I wear it only in spring, when nature wakes up, because it is all like that - cheerful, optimistic, sunny gives me an impulse of joyful life. Symphony of yellow and red, green and white. Harmony and calmness that chamomile tea gives me before bed. Purity and the innocence of younger days. And now, I put on Cerruti and sesiric and go to the coast to meditate. And I send kisses along the way

Scented.Key

This here! I love it. It's so soft and pleasant. It literally smells like you took a shower, shampooed your hair, got out, put baby powder on and drank a hot cup of green or chamomile tea. It is mood uplifting yet calming.

Edit: All that I said above, but something about it smells very 80s. I'm an 80s baby so that hits the nostalgia nail. My husband loves it on me as well as my mom. I'm wearing again today and a guy in Chipotle said he wasn't trying to flirt, but I smelled "Lovely. Clean powdery and fresh". I told him that was a perfect description LOL

Jaxie23

Bough this based on reviews for powder lovers. It’s pretty but not in love with it. It’s fresh, clean, citrus scent with a slight floral. It’s a clean scent. Not bad for the price.

avmist

I feel like everyone smells flowers or citrus; to me, this smells nothing more than woody. But it is a gorgeous woody scent! It smells warm, comforting, yet clean and fresh. Personally, I prefer to layer this with other scents, particularly with a floral perfume or a citrus perfume. Layered with a sweet berry or pear perfume didn't work so much; I felt that the scents clashed too much. But layer this with a citrus, sweet, or floral perfume and you're in business!

gtabasso

pretty light fresh spring floral that is very soft and a bit herbal and green rather than flowery; lots of freesia, rose, narcissus, chamomile, musk, mimosa and galbanum

UnearthlyApothecary

Wow! Nostalgia. Smelling this really reminds me of something. Of course I’ll never be able to remember what and it will drive me crazy forever. So it goes. This is one of those nineties florals that has a million notes but is so well blended it’s hard to really smell them all individually. I would say the most noticeable floral note for me is the yellow powdery mimosa, underlying this is a strong herbal chamomile. The freesia is competing for attention and If I really try I can also get a bit of the purple florals, the iris and violet. The tuberose maybe a bit. There is an underlying clean muskiness that I really dig. There honestly aren’t many of the big nineties florals that I like, this one really speaks to me for some reason. Maybe it’s more unique with its herbal chamomile and green galbanum. Im a sucker for a good musky scent too. This one isn’t as harsh and loud as many of the other florals from this era, but it still demands your attention. it has fantastic silage and longevity.

jasmeet4000

Summer office wear with some class. 3 sprays and you are in perfume heaven. The powdery trail lingers all day. I think this would be better suited for those over 25 years old. Personally I can suggest blending this with any other woody scent if you are male as generally I think this is suited for both men and women. Very versatile.

scandi rose

I love this EDT, it smells clean, powdery, pink (i used to think if gentle pink had a scent it would be this), it smells very very feminine and classy. Like it whispers i am a female and glad to be. I cannot get enough of it. It is expertly blended, and made me think of a cheaper (not by much) scent similar to Scandal. It is perfect for everyday wear, it is not offensive and perfect for work. I always get compliments from it, my man said it is fave perfume on me. This works for any age as well. I always have a bottle of this. It would work for a night out but better for day time. I never get bored of this fragrance, on a blind buy or as a gift, not many would be disappointed. Could become my signature daytime scent.

Aguademar

drawingmaniac35

I am one to judge a book by the cover or a scent by the bottle. I go for those minimalist, elegant bottles and never even look at designs like this.
What a huge mistake!
This to me is a rather generic yet extremely calm and elegant scent. It smells like a really put-together feminine lady, smells like fresh laundry, and even like a cup of tea somehow. Calm is the association it evokes in my mind. It does not develop much and is, as I said, generic to my nose but that's exactly how I like it. It lasts pretty long and can usually be found pretty cheap.
I personally received it as a swap alongside another scent and I will probably give this to my mother, however, I will still use it when I just want to feel comfy and calm.

Emi2020

Really pleasantly surprised, this was a blind buy for me and a successful one! I like my sweet gourmand and floral perfumes like bonbon, la vie est belle and moschino toy 2, I was wanting something soft and cosy, a bit powdery but still sweet and when I read the reviews on here I finally caved and bought a 100ml bottle! I was hesitant before the fragrance arrived because it's from 1995 I didnt know what to expect because alot of older fragrances just dont do it for me but cerrutti 1881 is so lovely it's not old fashioned smelling whatsoever. I do recognise the scent from my youth maybe from older relatives wearing it, it's a very comforting scent. First spray is sweet and vibrant and the dry down is soft and cosy

Anast4s1a

It's like camomiles & blue bells in a pine forest with still no dry off raindrops. It forever.

C'est comme des marguerites et des cloches bleues dans une forêt de pins avec des gouttes de rosée non encore séchées. C'est pour toujours.

Svartravn

A very clean, pure scent. I cannot say anything bad about it - linen, flax, powder, flowery. Yet I don't use it too often. Maybe the "casual, very feminine, mom/secretary/librarian" character does not suit me that well. Otherwise, it is a great fragrance! I am not planning to give it away, I just assume it will last for years, because I don't get in that mood too often.

ViouAmara

I enjoy the clean floral bouquet opening.
After half an hour, the dry down is a little bit more difficult for me. The sandalwood is a sweet, exactly like in Eau d’été Kenzo (the last one, green in the leaf shape); it doesn’t work very well with the happy flowers. I would have preferred the fragrance to stay clearly floral and springtime colored..
I am surprised nobody mentioned this similarity before, or I least I didn’t see it.

gardencat13

For me this was a blind buy and, actually, a bit of an afterthought that I added to my order mostly to push it over the amount for free shipping...but what a happy choice.

It’s a light and powdery floral that, despite it’s light feel, manages to project well and last a good length of time. According to the listed notes, it contains some of those heavy hitter florals that I usually expect to find in more formal, serious perfumes ( jasmine, rose, iris etc.) and yet this comes off more casual and more like a mixed bouquet from a country garden.

To my nose, the musk is also very present, in fact this reminds me a little of Narciso Pure Musc but, in this one, the floral aspect predominates and in the Narciso the musk takes centre stage.

At the price you can find this right now, it’s a hidden gem IMO.

Eugenia Olesen

Lovely. Almost forgotten powdery masterwork from the 90´s. Something dry, dusty and medicinal like – that is how the camomile feels. Gently blended wild field flowers. Feels very nice.

Polinka

This is a perfume of beauty...
This might come as a surprise to someone who is not into retro fragrances. The same happened with me. And still I liked this fragrance from the first sniff. Utterly elegant, feminine, kind of reminiscent of something. Maybe the 90', because I surely know I have smelled this before. Now the scent itself: for some reason all I get is powdery lipstick, but not the annoying kind of lipsticky smell. Just well blended flowers dipped into cosmetic powder. Not the baby powder, not the powder of L'instant! Heavy and light at the same time. I don't know, you just have to try it :)

JordanRose

I have found that this is the most headache inducing fragrance I have ever tried. I suppose it just doesn’t work with my body chemistry and it’s way to fruity for my taste. I just find it very heavy and the different notes combined don’t make sense to me personally. Although I have smelt this on someone I know and it smelt beautiful on them.

Moss in Snow

I wore a lot of this when I was at university and into my early 20s.

I always got compliments, it seemed to work very well with my skin. Even now, when I smell it on someone I enjoy it. I think it could also work as a summer fragrance for a man in a hot country. It has a freshness that is more than just simple and is not as generic to my nose as many more recent scents.

I feel like this one is going to be "rediscovered" as a bit of a classic in ten years time. It's a really good buy at the price, even if I do feel they have reformulated it somewhat. I think I have convinced myself to buy another bottle!

Martina11

One of the best floral light fresh and clean fragrances (together with gucci Bamboo). I have bought this one as a gift for my best friend for her birthday couple of months ago. The reason was that she was very sensitive when it comes to fragrances and I wanted to buy her a simple neutral fresh and clean fragrance. When I first smelled it I thought that it is a pleasant smell but too neutral and generic for me. But after she started wearing it I have changed my mind because she smells amazing when she wears this! Now I regret that I did not buy this for myself, hehe. It has a pretty inpresive longevity and sillage, too. And it is a cheap designer fragrance. Definitely worth checking out!

Coffee King

I've read a few reviews on this one, where it's deemed a pleasant floral, or words to that effect, when it all fairness there's a lot more going on. Fragrances so often seem to dry down to that powdery Iris note, whereas 1881 starts off with it. 1881 has a different vibe, depending on temperature, and it also seems to have lots of depth, it can't be classed a floral, a herbal etc, it has too much happening. I don't think the Iris lingers too long, and when that powder goes, it's Woody and green, with multiple notes. It's a sense fragrance.

Longevity is fantastic, it has spawned a host of flankers, some good, some not. I've often thought, as Chloe did, a rebrand and relaunch, could be something good, it seems somewhat unloved at the moment.

KMel

I first wore this in 1998 and it was absolutely gorgeous. Recently purchased a bottle and it is really different, very synthetic and my husband hates it. I am new to all this, but feel that it must have been reformulated, very sad.

ptilda

Perhaps it's the name, but I was ready for this to be much more vintage than it is.

What a nice little surprise! I actually am loving this one. Fresh and flirty. Springy and innocent. But it's mature too. There's a green and a dry hay note in here that make this deeper and more profound than a typical spring bouquet.

This is something my mother would like, I think. Understated and sentimental. For the woman who doesn't wear perfume.

Sweetlady 123

This fragrance remind me of warm late spring days when I went with my grandfather to mow the hey on the meadow. Mix of warm smell of dry hey and herbs and flowers... Two sprays and I'm back there...when the life was simple and jaunty.

cocofluff

Smells like a fresh out of the shower springy, floral scent. It's very clean and soapy. Great sillage and longevity too! I'm usually not a fan of freesia because of its soapy smell. I don't get much chamomile, which is unfortunate because I love chamomile and wish it were in more perfumes and more pronounced. I love wildflowers too!

This fragrance shocked me with its persistence and linear strength. It stays the same throughout its wear on my skin. It's pretty and feminine. It also has a doll-like scent to my nose. Solid like. I can't wait to get the shower gel. Sampling from a swap with a lovely member, miss mills.

Edit WOW! Wore this to work and I loved it! I smelled fresh ALL day. I can still smell it 10 hours later. I'm changing my mind to LOVE! <3 It's my best work perfume. I have a decant but I need a full bottle! -

what is this I don't even

I'm mixed on this one. Sometimes I enjoy it and other times I think the mimosa is jarring and overly sweetens the otherwise lovely bouqet of sunny wildflowers and weeds. To me this is a sweet version of Revlon Jontue.

lLaura

I recently reviewed the old vs new, side by side. The old bottle is obviously far more beautiful. As for scent, both are not very heavy or projecting and I did not notice any difference in longevity or projection. However, the development of the powdery smell (Iris) is a bit more predominantly in the dry down for the old formulation.

Concluding: both scents have the same profile and the same development over time, and the only note that stands out a bit more in the old formulation is Iris. For me this difference is so marginal that I’m very happy to finish my old bottle and continue with the new, reformulated version.

bianca_11106

I find myself falling in and out of love with this one. Now it's love again and I'm glad I can enjoy wearing it.
I've wrote another review about it in October and back then i couldn't wear it anymore because it seemed sharp and a bit cloying, but now it's spring and the weather is getting warmer and it developes so beautiful, it's soft and delicate and airy like a fluffy cloud of camomile and mimosa, so feminine and cozy.
I guess on my skin it depends on the weather with this one, and it really shines when it's sunny and warm and I'm so happy it works again because it really is a beautiful fragrance!

Nyrahe

Beautiful perfume. The most interesting thing about this one is that it´s extremely herbal without being green or flowery, which is, at least in my opinion, very hard to create. It´s classy, very feminine, I´ve also heard the word "maternal" - YES - in a very, very good way :)

redskyatnight

This reminds me of the good old days when perfume still smelled like perfume, and bath salts were...bath salts. They often smelled like this, with prominent notes of freesia, mimosa, rose, and the like. A woman would emerge from a hot bath smelling like a sweet and powdery bouquet of flowers. This scent is quite timeless, though they're not made like this anymore.

I have a vintage EDT and Parfum and have first tried the EDT. I will add my review of the parfum later. So far it is juicy and sour, almost melon-like, and full of lush floral notes. It's also quite powdery. The smell from the bottle was a bit harsh and generic, but on my skin it warms to something else. Nothing is obtrusive, but rather everything is seamlessly blended. I'm not sure if I could pull this off, but it is very lovely.

Edit: The parfum is a whollop of chamomile - warm, spicy, sweet. Not very floral in the expected sense. This is comfort in a bottle.

Fragrance -1881 Cerruti for women

Nothing elevates a table like a beautiful bouquet of flowers.
This is a classic mixed-flower fragrance with dominant chamomile and mimosa laying on top of a soft, powdery, musky, ambery and woody base.

kaalikajol

Nice perfume, but had to give it away because it was just not my style. It is a very cozy, mum-sy type of smell, which is pleasant. But I am more of a girl who likes sweet, fruity fragrances, so this smell did not suit me at all. One of my co-workers also did not like the smell on me either. Also not a fan of powdery smells. It does remind me of 90s fragrances, but creamier. I know this smell would work wonders on some people, but it's just not for me.

pipergirl

The more I wear 1881 the more I appreciate it - a soft floral with an underlying kiss of citrus. It's such a calm, put together and fresh scent. There is a powdery quality about it which makes it nice to wear on cool days but it's fresh, airy and light enough to wear on hot, humid days, too. 1881 is one of those perfumes that you can wear anytime, anyplace. As much as I love it during the cool weather, I think it's really going to shine in the summer heat. Love this.

polkadot27

This perfume is fruity sweet and herbal, I don't love this scent, but it is ok for the price I paid - £26 for 100ml and it has been in my collection since 2013, I have now started using it for the gym, I will say that it is not at all powdery, it is fruity but in a dry way rather than fresh tropical scent, it is somewhat herbal, it has a bitter sweetness and reminds me of tangerine peel but this is subtle thanks to the chamomile. Whilst extremely strong and heady on first spritz, it soons settle and I will say I do like the scent this leaves on my skin post work out it smells sweet and fresh and floral and more like a high end moisturizer. However on clothes and on the initial spritz I am not a fan it is too sweet fruity and herbal, I find it too much, but the drydown is wonderful. I would not repurchase this once I use it up, it is a like for me. Longevity, projection and price into consideration I would rate 5.5/10.

justchillinxo

It's definitely unique and very sweet/floral. Definitely do not blind buy.

liverpudlian78

I got this one as a mini recently, gifted to me by someone who'd had it sitting in an unused set of minis.
I really like it; it's unusual with the chamomile note in the background, but it's mainly a sort of powdery, fresh, slightly floral scent (rose, I think?). Very feminine, comforting and with soft sillage, but also elegant. I don't think the longevity is great, but it can be found for relatively cheap around where I live so I will probably add it to my wardrobe. Try it!

smellhunt

I just rediscovered this little gem.
It was on sale and I hadn't smelled it since my late teens, when I used to wear it, feeling confident and careless... so I just grabbed a bottle.
This is still beautiful, the ultimate comfort scent;
it feels like you are being hugged by someone who loves you and assures you that everything will be all right after all...
An airy, clean, slightly powdery floral, long lasting with moderate silage and calming effects, this is always a good choice!

ingrid.superstar

This review is for the reformulated version with the rosy gold cap.

Cerruti 1881 is mentioned so often on the forums that I felt like smelling it was practically a rite of passage for frequenting this site. Since it is fairly affordable on ebay, I figured that even if this blind-buy turns out to be a dud, at least I will finally understand all those enticing references.

This perfume is very soft, gentle, and sunny. Mostly I get a touch of mimosa, iris, and rose followed by a healthy dose of "clean laundry musk." It starts out herbal, floral, and slightly green like the steam rising off a cup of rose or chammomile tea.

In the middle, it goes through a phase of smelling like a luxe cake of provence soap. To make the image more precise, I don't mean a perfectly smooth factory-made soap, lovely though those may sometimes be; I am thinking of a handmade farmer's market soap, with little bits of dried herbs and flowers set into it! In the dry-down, there is the politest whiff of powdery vanilla sweetness. Eight hours in, the clean, cozy smell of cedar is still lingering faintly and the anisic fuzziness of mimosa is holding on as well.

I imagine I will reach for this one the same way I reach for Bvlgari Omnia Crystalline -- when I want to smell clean and don't want to go through the rigmarole of matching outfit and mood to scent in any statement-making way. I would call this a chameleon perfume: good for blending into any setting while still smelling lovely.

At times 1881 reminds me of Chloe Love but with a more muted iris note.

I think this is a safe blind-buy for musk-lovers or anyone looking for a polite, all-purpose scent to have on hand. I don't mean to downplay this as the "elevator music" of perfumes or something. To be clear, I think it smells great! I keep sniffing my wrist to experience it again.

If you are in love with the mimosa aspect of this perfume, try Cerruti 1881 Edition Blanche. It is *very* different than the original! Edition Blanche is a weird/wonderful mimosa rollercoaster ride by superstar perfumer Annick Menardo. It smells like dandelion greens and cotton candy...

Iris_123

Just purchased the original formulation. OMG. What a difference. This one actually lasts. Definitely the original has way better performance. Also, the bottle design is beautiful. I did notice the notes are the same on both, the only difference is that the new version is watered down.

I really don't get the bad reviews for the latest version here. I remember it very well from the 90's, but I never owned one myself. However, I own the latest version now, and I can't really detect any difference. I used three sprays this morning, and I can still smell it well on myself; 6 hours later.

Cerruti 1881's signature scent is perfect for office use. For me it is rather a fresh and crisp than a warm scent. I don't know of any other perfume that resembles it, and it could easily be a signature scent for someone. Recognisable and unique. Fresh, herbal, and even a bit contemporary.

test - from a sample dab
hmmm, the accords for cerruti 1881 look about right, except the opening is an alcoholic blast...of soft floral non descript alcohol...

poor lasting power, very soft.

i was looking forward to a great longlasting inexpensive fragrance but no, didnt get that.

bottle has goldy/bronze lid not the peachy marble.

might need a proper spray from a bottle to reaaaaally see whats its about. but dont stress if you cant try or get it.

Think : sunflowers and floral powder
Floral fragrances have never been my thing. However I have found this to be an interesting exception. This is such a warm comforting embrace... Reminds me of something lacy and it just blends so well with my skin.
I sprayed this 3-4 times on my skin, it has now been 6-7 hours and I even showered. It still lingers faintly and that is exactly what I need. Nothing stays on my skin for more than couple of hours. Loving this!!

I just don't like the opening mimosa. It luckily fades away soon. There are too many good notes in this luckily that create magic. I love the unique bottle. Mine is with the bronze pink cap.

Never try expensive scents based on others reviews, as a scent has a way of blending differently according to a person's body chemistry. I have had several occasions where I have tried some really popular fragrances and they have not gone down well with me. That's just my body talk.

UPDATE: guys this reformulation is so water down. I tried using it as room spray however I find JOVAN WHITE MUSK lasting longer on skin and ambiance. Please please....I urge you not to spend your hard earned money on this. It is truly as I wrote in my original review, a beautiful fragrance but not worth imho.

Iris_123

I just purchased this on EBay. Love it but does not last on me at all. Staying power is soooo weak. I’m gonna use it as room spray. The mimosa is lovely, also the iris and chamomile. This review is for the gold cap by the way. I’ve never smelled the original. It’s truly beautiful since I enjoy clean soapy fragrances. It is also well balanced given all the flowery notes is composed of. I truly wish the staying power wasn’t so poor. On me it’s very close to skin. I was going to return it but decided to keep it even if I have to respray it 20 times a day. On my clothes smells like a nice laundry soap. Perhaps in the warmer months it will perform better on me. I guess I have to wait and see

Update: I’m sad to say this beautiful fragrance is not even room spray worthy. I enjoy it for 30 min if not less and POOF!!!

bianca_11106

I don't know what is it about this one...I liked it a lot but lately it seems like it turned or something...all I get from it now is a very sharp powdery rose that's choking me...so weird

annxyz

I just purchased this and it is the latest version. It smells lousy . Bad . ( Sorry)

Maybe it smelled good years ago , but not now. This is disappointing . It smells watery and slightly herbal . Mostly nothing .

I am surprised, because I read so many great reviews of this one. Save your money .
Calling it a grandma scent is insulting to grandmas.

( By the way , my grandma smelled heavenly . I am now a grandma and I wear Chanel Allure . I smell pretty damn good !)

louiee

Soapy, fresh and clean. Fluffy as a cloud. I have adored This sinde my teenage years. Got one again in a present last year. What a beautiful reconnection we made. Silage and longevity is above average. The cormforting and soothing scent is feminine and innocent. A non offensive and delicate perfume.

apple1386

Freshness and sweetness balanced perfectly. I cannot stop sniffing myself! Yet another blind buy and it hit the mark <3

This is my second review of Cerruti 1881, and it differs from the first review 3 years ago.
This is what I said -

I received this today as a christmas present....and I love it. Its a beautiful floral, fresh and sweet smelling fragrance... I definately think it is a summer fragrance, and day wear to the office as its such a pleasnt smell and a people pleaser.......maybe not what I would wear for an evening out but I love this perfume. Its very long lasting too, considering its an EDT, it lasts longer than some of my EDPs.

Back then, I was only just beginning to collect my perfume wardrobe.

Today I can maybe give a better review, now that I have worn it for 3 years.

So initially I said that it is perfect for summer wear, but in fact I find it even better in spring or autumn, it's very office friendly and could really be worn all year round, even in the depths of winter.
I received my original bottle as a christmas present, and then purchased another 100ml bottle of it when I read in Fragrantica that it was being reformulated. The way to tell this was the colour of the bottle cap.....so when I saw this I quickly grabbed myself a bottle as a back up.

On first initial spray it does tend to be sharp-ish, but I am patient enough to know that within 30+ minutes it will become the most beautiful fresh powdery floral you could wish for. Can powdery floral feel fresh? yes it can. I love freesias, and I find the note pretty quickly, though the rose note escapes me for some reason until much later. The drydown is to die for, Cedar is one of my favourite notes, and its there for me in abundance, along with Sandalwood, Vanilla & musk. In my 3 years of collecting perfumes I have bought some wonderful fragrances, and Cerruti at £19.99 for 100ml is sold in the 'not cool' section of the perfume counter, but it sits proudly next to my Guerlains and Chanels... and is worn a LOT....because it fits so well to any occasion. Work, play and evenings out.

It's been 8+ hours since I sprayed my wrist with it and I can still smell it. I like the opening of this perfume, very pleasant, flowery and sweet but not too much. After 20 mins or so it changes into something fizzy and I'm not a great fan of this stage, but what happens next is one of the most comforting fragrances I can think of. Camomile tea with honey and flowers... There's warmth but it's very light and refreshing at the same time, so delicate and gentle. And it lasts and lasts. Well made perfume.

farahadel72

My mama fav perfume....very soft and long lasting at the same time ....I like it too

Coffee_Girl

I agree with the person below me, this is definitely a mom scent. It reminds me of my mother in her youth in the kitchen making sesame dumplings...wearing a pretty dress and looking so elegant and feminine.

Usually for me perfumes either feel too young or too mature, this scent falls perfectly in the middle. There is something there that is fun and happy, but bordering on maternal and maturity.

I really want this badly to be my sig but it just doesn't last. I don't know about the vintage versions (it's so hard to find!)...but the metal cap version is very sheer...so sad. =[

kaalikajol

It smells like a mom. Don't know what that means until you smell it.
It's nice, comforting, warm, and cozy.

The only reason I did not like it on my skin is because I am not a huge fan of powdery smelling perfumes, and this does smell very powdery.

Doesn't match my personality, but it is a nice perfume and worth a sniff.

imoore

The new formula is not good enough for even as an air freshener! Try before you spend any money on it.
And try something better!
It smells like an old kitchen cloth which was washed for years with various detergents and softeners.

Cubby

I’m wearing this fragrance most days. Today, I’d just finished pumping gas into my car when a nice man on the other side of the pump said, “I thought I smelled a Señorita.” His English wasn’t especially fluent, but he complimented me several times. For someone who rarely gets comments on my perfumes, this made me smile for quite a while.

meliecat

This one is pure nostalgia, brings me back to the early noughties..It was one of the first real perfumes I bought and wore it a lot on spring-summer evenings and nights when we were going out to clubs flirting fellas. To me it always smelled more FRUITY than anything - I was actually shocked to see the notes here! I always thought it smelled like really ripe cantaloupe melon, musk and summer flowers, plus something woody like sandalwood in the background..Not talking about synthetic melons though, but the actual real deal! I sprayed it on myself today at the chemist`s and yep - I still get the exact same impression, except that the melon fades away and mimosa and chamomile appear along with sandalwood.

And what`s more - regardless of the memories, I`d still wear it! It`s elegant, juicy, tad bit powdery and soapy in a super-clean sense. Wonderful invigorating day-time perfume for the warmer months!

lorraine777

i remember the first time i smelled it on my best friend. i thought she smelled like an ANGEL. such a divine smell.
that was 15 years ago.
since then i used quite a few diffrent perfumes, ranging from light blue to chloe fluer.
but yesterday i bought this again for i tried it a few weeks ago and the smell is just as i rememberd. it last long and the few times a day i gett a wiff of it, i feel amazing. pleasent calm and beautiful.
i fell back in love with it... and i think its sirious this time...

realy marvalous scent.

Floffles

How can I say this in a way that doesn't sound bad....

It smells like my mother's bathroom. But that is not a bad thing, because going into that room you would think no one had ever pooed in there before. Like it's too pretty to. Tons of decorative unused candles. Matching decorative towels, curtains, and accents. Not a speck of dust anywhere. And the smell of Cerruti. Kind of powdery. Fresh. Clean but not soapy.

Cubby

I vaguely remember this when it came out. But in those days, all I wanted was my regular signature scent (Estee Pure Fragrance Spray). This is such a nice and very affordable fragrance! I'm enjoying it so much! It lasts a long time, too. I hope it is never discontinued.

blackmartini

It appears I have been living under a rock. How come I didn't sniff this marvel earlier? You tell me.

I only thought about giving this a try after seeing it hailed as one of the best all-rounders in a thread. In other words, thank you fellow Fragranticans for blowing my mind once more with your amazing recommendations.

Long story short, I had the biggest déjà vu when smelling this (or déjà senti, I guess ?)... I remember it, it's one of those elusive fragrances that you have spotted many times before on people without ever knowing its name.

It is just as casual as it is sophisticated, but also incredibly enveloping and reassuring. It is a warm, soothing embrace. It is the smell of a loving mother who tells you everything will be ok.

minizelda

I was gifted the version with the marble-like cap.

My nose detects a very sharp and crisp scent. It is a linear scent that doesn't develop on my skin.

Cerruti 1881:

After all these year's I have NEVER once tired of this perfumes inner beauty & When I wear it it always makes me feel happy to be alive!! This reminds me of the most beautiful fresh clean crisp linen that's been outside dried in the warm sunlight in a meadow of wild flowers & their aroma is carried on the breeze for quite a distance!! When I wear this beautiful perfume I always feel shower clean & fresh no matter what time of the day it is,& the longevity is absolutely amazing!! Why on earth did Cerrito have to change the Marble top on the bottle till the plain boring metallic one? As personally I much preferred the older marble one!! A real classy clean beauty & A sure winner for Cerruti!!

cranky137

Unbelievable, that this scent feels still not boring at all, after all these years on a market. This scent, so comfortable and recognizable, could be worn by a girl in her 16 and by a woman 60+, so versatile, non-offensive, office-friendly and still unique.

It is slightly powdery, camomile/fresia light-pink floral mix (the color of the bottle reflects the scent very well).

You cannot go wrong with this one!

boutlagh

Got this perfume today. like Chloe Love by Chloe, this smells of extreeme cleanliness and has a vintage soapy vibe: powder+ what a perfume for women should smell like. A beautiful discovery.

Midnight Lady

The opening smells quite old fashioned if you ask me: I get mostly mimosa and fresia - gentle floral.
The drydown softens the notes a bit and here comes the chamomile - delicate one, iris and a little bit of musk.

It's truly very inofensive safe and office friendly fragrance. But I do get that vintage vibe from it and I prefer more of a modern take on florals.

demhayerawsah

There was a bottle of Cerruti 1881 lying around the house at some point - having belonged to one of my sisters of my mother.
I used it for a while, liking the violet as well as the coriander and jasmine.

This perfume is at once both classic and modern. I just found out it was created in 1995 - that shocks me somewhat. It is not your typical 90s fragrance.
There is something cosy about this perfume and I see someone else describe it as "womanly".

Fairly long-lasting.Gorgeous bottle as well.

Mona Lygre

A friend of me bought this nice perfume back in 1995, and I envy her a lot, now I recently bought it myself, and I love it, it smells wonderful on my skin.

mutintabailey

What a lovely timeless perfume, my sons friends mum wears this.
It is subtle but strong! and very fresh! pretty scent, a very safe buy that literally subtly strong!
Fresh VERY feminine and just a beautiful scent that is non offence and so affordable!.
I adore this!

andili

This is one of my favorite perfumes of all time. I have spent hundreds (lol I realized it is now in the thousands) of dollars on perfume but by far this is the best buy I ever made for only $10 dollars on eBay. This perfume has an old soul/nostalgic feel to it. By old soul I do not mean the powerful strong scented perfumes; it is the chamomile, mimosa, and woodsy notes that brings you back to the happy simple life. I get compliments ALL the time and I think it is because people also get that nostalgic impression from this scent. This is not the scent for smelling fresh and crisp but you (and the people around you) can feel a sense of comfort.

Janlaw

This is a cousin of givenchy very irrestible. Nothing ground breaking.,,nothing new too perfumey for my tastes.

Winter Sweet

I loooooove it. Unique, soothing and fluffy!
Love the bottle as well.

FrancesAnne

Decided to try this before buying it for a friend's birthday. She said she likes it and I was curious what it smelt like. My friend is very vivacious, loud and likes to be the centre of attention. Initially when I sprayed this perfume I thought mmmmm, this is quite nice and then wondered how she would wear anything so delicate (she normally wears Clinique Aromatics). Then on the dry down I understood. It dries to deep musky pushy layers which bustle for attention. You will smell me!
Yes it is very much my friend's kind of fragrance, bottle ordered.

paulinebrown36

I was so excited to try this perfume that I gave myself 3 sprays right out of the box! Turns out that was a little bit of overkill, one or two would be perfect for this beauty. It is much more complex than the airy, watery "clean" scents that have flooded the market in the past 10 years, though I would call this one clean and quite powdery and a little soapy. Delicious!

Smelling it in the box I think of peaches, but the only fruit appears to be lime. It's a heady floral/woody scent. I LOVE this fragrance, the opening is creamy and very uplifting and the mid notes and dry down become increasingly herbal and woody until what's left is quite a masculine warmth. I like that it's not overtly feminine all the way through. It's quite potent in a pleasing way, not so much in your face as confidently apparent.

I can't believe I haven't tried cerruti before. Perfect for the cooler months and thankfully for me anyway, the vanilla is blended rather than a detectable individual note.

Carrieberry

My review is for the new formulation with the metallic cap. First of all I love 90's perfumes. They are usually much more complex than the pefumes of the current decade. Cerruti 1881 is no exception. I definitely see the colour pink when smelling this perfume. It is very girly, feminine and clean. Cerruti contains many different flowers though no specific flower jumps out at me. It is a very smooth blend. However I can sense Chamomile very softly and gently in the background. I find this fragrance to be unique and recognizable, definitely a good signature. lasting power is very good and I could see this fragrance being worn at all times but I think it is better for daytime and a perfect office scent.
