I thought I would share with you guys this interview with Canon just after the Worlds with Boyang. He talks about winning the bronze again and the start of the season. Have fun reading. (Source http://www.weibo.com/ttarticle/p/show?id=2309404103029807787611 )

Jin Boyang Canon interview

Jin Boyang of China skated a performance free of mistakes in both the short program and free skate. In the 2017 World Championship he won the bronze medal for a second consecutive year. Last season he quickly broke into the top tier of skaters using his weapon the '4Lz + 3T'. In this interview, we asked him about his experience of his second year as a senior and his thoughts on next season.

On breaking the 300 points barrier for the first time “I'm more pleased about the performance than the score itself”
C: Congratulation on winning the Worlds bronze medal.
B: Thank you.
C: Although this is the second consecutive time of winning the Worlds bronze medal, compared to last year bronze, what difference are there to this year?
B: I think, compared to last year, this year bronze medal is the real medal. Last year, I was lucky to get the medal due to other skaters mistakes but this year was based on my own skill and my satisfactory performance so I think this year bronze is more real. Looking back over this season, the beginning was not so smooth, but also through this difficulty I have been able to achieve what I have now so I feel like to saying to myself “I've done not bad.”
C: At the start of this season you didn't get good results, what was the reason?
B: The first reason was because pre-competition time was relatively short so I hastily did not manage to prepare everything. I also grew a little bit taller, so my body and mind had not yet adapted to these height changes. Also because of these changes, before the competition I had to change skates so I needed time to adjust. That is why at the start of the season, I did not have a good performance. Now this season has ended, I have now adjusted very well to these problems.
C: It's good to hear you have handled these problems. So what do you think about your score 303.58, your first time over 300?
B: This score is indeed my best result. But this time compared to the score I am more pleased about my performance itself. One element at a time I challenged each one and competed them, giving my best effort to the end. This is what I am most satisfied about.

On his unique “Spiderman” short program and Lori Nicol cooperation
C: In the short program and free skate you skated 2 clean programs. Although this is only the first time working with Lori Nicol to arrange these programs, the SP Spiderman very suits Jin unique style.
B: Spiderman is the SP I have skated to so far that I like the most. The program does not take the classical style, but the program is more suited to my personality, so it can be said it is my masterpiece. When I am skating to this program, the interaction with me and the audience is very good, makes me to feel that my interpretation of the program is very well received by the audience. This also lifts my mood during the skate.
C: Your free skate 'La Strada' by Nino Rota is also a very good program. In your SP and FS we get to see two different style.
B: I also very like 'La Strada'. This program puts together intense, funny, happy and other emotions which are all integrated together. During the performance there is also a variety of changes in expressions so I am pleased that I am able to express this difficult choreography and also such well known piece of music.
C: What is your impression on Lori Nicol?
B: I think Lori ability to equip each skater with program that suits them is very impressive. When I first met, Lori said my personal self and the character I show on TV was not very same. In fact, at the start of the season, I felt that the fast pace of La Strada was a bit too much. This was to allow Lori to show my character, my cheerful and happy side and to allow me to express this during the skate. To be able to cooperate with Lori has allowed me to enjoy skating more.
C: Will you be going to Lori next season
B: Yes
C: Very much looking forward to what program you will present.
B: I have not decided yet what music to use. But I'd like to challenge songs of various genres. I want to become a strong player that can express such songs and can win in the big competitions.

Proud to be a catalyst in the current high difficulty Quad era. Next season will continue challenging 4 Loop.
C: Last season Jin became the first person to land 4 quads in the free skate. As a result of your challenges, other men have started adding more and different quads into their programs. As the person who started this challenge, what so you think of this?
B: I think my coach (Xu Zhaoxiao) was amazing. Thanks to my coach teaching, I had the confidence to challenge what I thought was impossible. I am proud to have been a catalyst in the current quad era. I hope to become a stronger skater myself, and be able to represent China skating.
C: How about your new quad?
B: Although this season I started training the 4 Loop, but in February Four Continents it was not a high success rate. Although I was successful in training, in the competition it was not. In this year between 4cc and Worlds there was the Asian Games so now the body is tired, so stopped training it temporarily. But after the end of this season, I will challenge it again.

On Harbin as training base. Focused on training.
C: Most of the Chinese national skaters train in Beijing but Jin training base is Harbin. What are the advantages of training in Harbin.
B: I am from Harbin, so training in Harbin means that I can be with my friends and family so I am more relaxed. In Beijing, everybody lives in a dormitory. Of course, in terms of training environment, Beijing is much better but I like Harbin better. In Harbin on ice time is not very long, about 1 hour and a half but I think the quality of practice is high. Although the training is physically hard I am always careful not to get injured. Also in Harbin, some of my training teammates, I have grown up together with as friends, so everyday is very happy and fun.
C: Is there a skater in your training rink who is of similar level to you?
B: Well, hmm....(laughs)
C: Is it a more free environment for training?
B: Yes

Will carry this season's experience into next season. Hope to skate an excellent performance in the Olympics
C: Jin amazing athletic ability is likely to have been inherited from his parents who were once track and field athletes. But why did your parents not persuade you to do athletics instead?
B: Although my parents are track and field athletes, they have never told me to do athletics. My parents did not originally plan for me to become an athlete. When I was a child, I was a particularly energetic and naughty child, and simply would not quiet down in school (laughs). One time, I went to see a figure skating show in Harbin rink. From there on I fell in love with figure skating so my parents decided to let me practice figure skating.
C: Next year will be the Pyeongchang Olympics Games, please tell us your thoughts looking back on this season as well as next season's ambition.
B: The beginning of the 2016-2017 season, as I mentioned earlier, had various problems, I was fifth in Skate America in the GP series. This result gave me a unexpected blow. But this season various experience has made me grow up a lot. I think this was for me good. Everything that I have gained from these experiences this season will be carried into next season. I know myself what I should practice and how to work hard. I will make the Olympic Games the goal of my hard work, I would like to give two perfect programs and a satisfactory performance and perform this to everyone.
C: Previously, you once said “I hope in the 2018 Pyeongchang Olympic Games and 2022 Beijing Olympic Games to be able to stand on the podium.” So I look forward to your performance next season.
B: Yes, thank you.

Moan! Why does Boyang have to go to Skate America. Judging in America is always dodgy, they always inflate their own skaters scores. Plus its the last event so they will be going out of their ways to squeeze in as much of their own skaters into the final as possible. No chance of winning this event as the judges will give as much help to Nathan Chen to win.

Well I'm very happy that Boyang is going to SA. It means I get to see him live again this time waving a Chinese flag and hopefully I can have a banner ready to go. And the last 4 times I attended SA, it's Japanese men 3, US man 1 for gold. I believe Boyang can take Nathan depending on his form and programs. Top 2 is definitely doable.

Boyang recently left for Canada for new choreography :)
I would like to take back my initial music suggesting of La Boheme, and suggest 'You raised me up' instead. Sung by a young, male voice.
Here are my reasoning:
- It's something that can showcase Boyang's showmanship and acting skills,
- It can create a great Olympic moment
- he has the chance to reach out to the audience
- the music has great highs,
- Koreans love this song
- Chinese love this song
- European and North American judges know this song and it's not labeled as being too simple or immature as the spider man song
- It suits him because he would be saying: he's still growing and maturing

How is boyang now?
This off-season is too long.
I miss him.

He will participate in a competition called 'national Grand Prix' or something on 9th-10th September, along with the top 3 pairs and Zijun and Xiangning.

Wish he would do Senior B though, as it would improve his world ranking ...

I'm actually pretty impressed by Boyang Sp for the Chinese Grand Prix. It's not too oriental and Boyang is quite expressive with the choreo. It needs a little bit of work but overall it's OK.
