The Bad Guy

Rate this book

My name is Sebastian Lindstrom, and I’m the villain of this story.
I’ve decided to lay myself bare. To tell the truth for once in my hollow life, no matter how dark it gets. And I can assure you, it will get so dark that you’ll find yourself feeling around the blackened corners of my mind, seeking a door handle that isn’t there.
Don’t mistake this for a confession. I neither seek forgiveness nor would I accept it. My sins are my own. They keep me company. Instead, this is the true tale of how I found her, how I stole her, and how I lost her.
She was a damsel, one who already had her white knight. But every fairy tale has a villain, someone waiting in the wings to rip it all down. A scoundrel who will set the world on fire if that means he gets what he wants. That’s me.
I’m the bad guy.

Author's Note: This is a 90,000-word romance with dark themes and a HEA.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️! The Bad Guy (stand-alone). My favorite Celia Aaron hero to date!

“I’m drawn to your spark of darkness the same way you’re drawn to the ocean of mine. We aren’t magnets pulled together by a weak force; we create our own gravity for each other.”

The Bad Guy (stand-alone) opens up to the picturesque life of high school biology teacher and aspiring researcher Camille Briarlane’s life. While attending a work function with her boyfriend she is quite taken by his mysterious boss, heir and CEO Sebastian Lindstrom.

Upon meeting Camille Sebastian realizes she has evoked feelings in him beyond desire so he does what any sensible highly functioning psychopath would do; He decides to claim her as his own and sets a devious plan in motion.

The story goes onto follow them in the aftermath of Sebastian’s irrational decision; Camille‘s futile attempts at escaping with Sebastian one step ahead, complicated by their fierce sexual tensions and set against the backdrop of the truth behind Sebastian.

Nine words to describe Sebastian Lindstrom: Blunt, calculated, aloof, enigmatic, detached, ruthless, lonely, vulnerable and mysterious.

Seven words to describe Camille Briarlane’s: Naïve, conflicted, loyal, reflective, stubborn, opinionated and forgiving.

The Bad Guy, told from dual POVs, is my favorite Celia Aaron story to date. Sebastian is everything I could ever ask for in a psychopath hero! With darkness in the forefront it is very much a journey of self-reflection, healing and second chances. The dialogue is sexy even witty at times and the overall feel is that of an against-all-odds-love.

Sebastian will melt your heart and the sex might just set your Kindle of fire.

I love dark romance and stories with captivity themes are among my favorites. So when I read the blurb for 'The Bad Guy', I was sure that it would be right up my alley. I wasn't wrong. It was just the type of "reformed" bad guy story that I love.

When Sebastian Lindstrom sets eyes on the girlfriend of one of his company's executives, he is determined to have her by any means necessary. A highly-functional psychopath, he doesn't conform to the social constraints of polite society. He sets out to possess her. Stalking, kidnapping and manipulation are all on the table.

Camille Briarlane has the "perfect" boyfriend. He's patient and doting. She knows that he wants to take their relationship to the next level. She only wishes that she felt half as passionate about him as she did for her teaching job. She's not sure what is holding her back, but something is.

When Camille accepts a job over Christmas break as a researcher in the Amazon, she has no idea that she's walking into a trap. Instead of being taken to the airport, she is taken prisoner. The sexy man that she once danced with at her boyfriend's company's party has stolen her. It is clear that he is unhinged and will go to any length to have her. She only hopes that she can get out alive.

I should be clear that this book is far different from most dark romances with a captivity theme. If you're looking for a really dark story with whips, chains and an abusive anti-hero, you won't find it here. It just wasn't that type of story.

Yes, Sebastian kidnaps Camille. Yes, he holds her captive in his family's countryside mansion. At times she even fears him.

However, Sebastian has no intention of physically harming her. He comes off as determined to woo her and absolutely clueless about how to make that happen. He knows that Camille is the woman for him, even if he doesn't understand "normal" emotions. He is sure that given enough time, she will come to realize that they are meant to be together also.

As messed up as the situation was, I couldn't help but feel sorry for Sebastian. There was an underlying vulnerability and even innocence to him that is hard to pinpoint. He didn't feel things in the same way as others, but Camille brought out his humanity.

Eventually, Sebastian has to face some hard truths. He realizes that he cannot make Camille love him. The harder he tries to force her hand, the more she will slip away. He begins to grow a conscience.

Likewise, Camille has to come to some realizations about her life. Her "perfect" boyfriend is not so perfect after all. Right or wrong, she has feelings for Sebastian that she needs to evaluate.

Overall, this ended up being a great book. It is a standalone and didn't leave me with any unanswered questions. It was different than other captivity-themed romances, but that only made it stand out from the rest. If you want a taboo love story that toes the line without leaping into "dark" territory, this is a great choice.

➳A psychopath like Sebastian has never sounded and been so much better than this… Can I please have me one, because Celia Aaron has made me crave one…

➳"Love at first sight” is a phrase that is commonly used in many romance stories. Including those that can be found in the dark, suspense, and intimidating romance novellas that many find a thrill to. What is being rejected from being said is that the phrase “lust at first sight” is the correct form to identify this compelling, intriguing, and mystic romance created by the master mind of Celia Aaron. She has not only brought a new theme to the romance shelves that I have only seemed to have found from two of my favorites— Penelope Douglas and R. Scarlett— but, she has created a new aspect of a personality and character that beckons you as the reader, for much more than just a sappily ever after love story.

➳Camille, a biology and life science teacher, and Sebastian, the CEO of his own inherited company from his father— Lindstrom— have found their way into each other’s lives. Both compelling each other in a way that can be defined as strange, but at the same time enticing to read. During their first encounter, something dark and killing invites them to be together. In Camille’s perspective, we can definitely rehash the sensations of scared, curious, but at the same time affected by Sebastian’s presence. For him however, it is a sense of pure possessiveness, knowing that he needs to control her, captivate her every essence that calls his name. It all seems as a perfect opportunity to pounce (no pun intended) upon his pray that is Camille and claim her, however, the realization that Camille belongs to what is considered in this compelling love story as a white knight named Link, her boyfriend, Sebastian knows that nothing, and I mean NOTHING will stop him from claiming her as his own, and only his. Before he can go ahead and attack, he knows that he needs to plan an arrangement to conquer her, by first showing disinterest towards her;
“I kept a look of disinterest on my face, the most-used mask in my repertoire, even though every gear and cog inside me turned and clanked as if I were a machine waking up after a long, dark sleep. Her energy was like gasoline in my veins, powering me up for some mysterious purpose…

➳As Sebastian works his ways to conquer Camille as his, he slowly begins to make the way into her heart by making her swoon in a way that can be considered as strange, but to others, romantic. His dark ways of compelling Camille into his world of seclusion is what attracts the reader to understand the psychological aspects Celia brings to this story, by also providing an insight of opposites being drawn to each other. Sebastian, being the dark cloud that rains on everyone’s parade, and Camille, being the sunshine that makes him stop and admire the vibrancy she has to her persona and the aura that she illuminates. His way of trying to seduce Camille is one that may be confusing to some, but appealing to others that crave this sort of dark romance. His candor can both be refreshing and harsh to the eye of someone whom cannot understand it. That is something Celia has no problem in portraying, as her words make every sense of the way through the story line, bringing an ending to this twilight of a novella. A darkness that Camille not only is surprised that she likes, but also craves towards the plot that will take you back in shock.

➳Overall, Celia Aaron has not only yet again brought a new story that will make you want to keep reading and reading for more of her intriguing words of darkness, but she has also brought a new theme to the romance novel world when it comes down to wanting an anti-hero to have an ending that will have you drooling for the mystery of wanting more of his dark aura.

Wow, what an amazing book it was! I loved it so much!

Warnings:
1. This is NOT a dark romance if it is what you are looking for.

2. The book looks like 477 pages but actually the novel "The Bad Guy" is 295 pages only. After it, there is a novella and then, at the very end of it there is a very short bonus chapter for The Bad Guy again!

*********************************************

This is not a romance that we are used to because as a hero, we have a clinically diagnosed psychopath in this book, doing crazy things: SEBASTIAN.

You should really meet him, though. He is one of a kind! Sweetest psychopath ever!

He was born this way (nature, not nurture). He cannot feel. He feels no emotions at all. He has motives for doing things, not feelings. Sebastian cannot empathize with people. (He kind of reminded me of Sheldon in Big Bang Theory, except Sebastian is dark, sexy and rich).

Nothing made me this way. I’d spent countless hours in therapy sessions, thanks to my dad, and each doctor and psychologist had come to the same conclusion.

On the spectrum of personality disorders, I was the most psychopathic person they’d ever counseled. It was hard wired into me. Nature, not nurture, had created my monster.

Sebastian’s father has tried to teach him how to act like a normal human being so that no one sees through his real psychotic self. If he hasn’t committed a huge crime and he isn’t imprisoned or kept in an institution, he owes it to his father’s non-stop efforts to guide him in the right way. He is such a good father, loving Sebastian no matter what is wrong with him.

Imagine how difficult it would it be to have a child like that and to raise him in the right way so that he is accepted in the society. Sebastian’s dad has always done his best to keep both him and the people around him safe.

It is really a sad situation both for the parent and the child. His dad had to homeschool him when he realized he wouldn’t fit in.

Now, he is the CEO in his father’s company and when it comes to business, he is really successful.

My father had taught me little rhymes when I was a child. They were meant to remind me how to be human when people were watching me or when I felt nervous.
Smile when they smile. It’ll take you miles.
When in doubt, wait it out. Emotions will always show what they’re about.

***

I didn’t lie to my dad. Not ever. Whenever my childhood brain suffered from a mature moment of clarity, I could see that Dad was the only thing standing between me and an institution. He’d told me as much on a few occasions.

***

Dad was patient and taught me everything I needed to know to pass in the real world.”
“Pass?”
“As a person, just like everyone else. With feelings and empathy, and all those tools that normal people are born with but I lack.”

Every now and then, Sebastian does crazy things owing to his psychotic nature but he is so lovable and so cute that you cannot get mad at him for a long time. He is trying to solve the puzzle of human emotions all the time in order to react to people in the right way. It is definitely tiring and frustrating if you look from his perspective.

I liked being in the head of a psychopath and understanding how they suffer due to their lack of emotions. He did things that I would never approve but still I tried to understand him and his reasoning. His efforts and will to do the right thing and his impulses that tell him to do the crazy thing were in a constant battle with one another.

Sebastian’s mind works in a simple way: He sees something he wants… He goes and takes it.

Well, but now he sees a woman that makes him feel something for the first time in his life and he wants her.

Camille is a very beautiful woman with chestnut brown hair and blue eyes. She is a sweet and smart woman.

The moment Sebastian meets her, he becomes obsessed with her. The thing is she already has a boyfriend. Yeap, kind of a love triangle.

What was happening to me? The need to take her, steal her, almost overwhelmed me, but I kept it at bay. Hiding my true intentions was the most important facet of the personality I showed to the world. If people knew what I truly was, I’d be a pariah.

Camille is also affected by his dark masculine beauty although she doesn’t consider acting on it. She has a boyfriend and she tries not to think about Sebastian. However, she cannot succeed in it. He confuses her with his unashamed and apparent interest in her.

Camille’s boyfriend Link seems to be the good guy in this story, the white knight in his shining armor.

He is in fact a douche-bag. I have felt a strong dislike for him from the very beginning. Link is also obsessed with Camille in his own weird way.

Right before I lost sight of her, she turned and smiled at me, as if sending me a spark of hope. The spark lit an inferno. It blazed up and promised destruction for anything that got between us. She was mine. Even if I had to steal her.

So what does Sebastian do to get the woman he wants?
Woo her?

Try to make her see that he is a better option as a boyfriend than the one she is already dating?

Of course, not!

His psychopath mind tells him to go and steal the girl and he does!

He really kidnaps her and imprisons her in his mansion where he intends to make her see how wonderful a couple they make.

He never hurts her but he keeps her, saying she will come to understand that they are meant for each other.

How can a woman manage this in captivity?

His reasoning is really eye-rolling but it is endearing at the same time. The poor guy finds something he likes and he wants to possess that thing. His logic is that simple, it works in this way.

“When normal people have a crush, they ask the crushee on a date. Did that ever occur to you?”
“It did, but you were with that halfwit. And asking for a date wasn’t—I don’t know— enough .”
“So kidnapping was your only option?”
“It made the most sense.”

Our heroine Camille is a sweetheart. She isn’t weak but she isn’t bitchy either. She is reasonable most of the time and she tries to stay strong and sane but at the same time she can’t stay immune to his charms, either.

Camille is sassy but she is also kind and she tries to understand him.

She can’t help being attracted to him and she hates herself for feeling this way. She feels for him but she is also scared so she wants to escape to get her freedom back. She feels all the opposite feelings.

The earnest look in his eyes was like a sledgehammer to the walls around my heart. I didn’t want to feel for him. Maybe it would have been better if I were like him—no emotions, no problems. But I wasn’t.

***

He was being earnest, but his plea struck me as sad. As if he were looking for affection, though he couldn’t quite put it into words. He didn’t know the language, but it didn’t stop him from wanting it. And, despite the circumstances, I couldn’t fault him for that.

Even a twisted tree would reach for the sun.

***

“I’m drawn to your spark of darkness the same way you’re drawn to the ocean of mine. We aren’t magnets pulled together by a weak force; we create our own gravity for each other.”

They make a weird couple but they are so hot and cute together. Despite the odd circumstances, they also experience real feelings. I enjoyed their banter. They were really funny sometimes!

“You are sick.”
“That’s what all the professionals say.”

...

“Psycho!”
“Your psycho.”

***

“What’s in the locked room? Severed head collection?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. That’s where I stack the dead hookers.”
“That’s only funny if a non-psycho says it.”

Camille was the first person that made Sebastian feel something but she was also the first person he didn’t need to try hard to decode. He just felt her.

I stared at Camille, looking for her nuances. She spoke to me, her body, her eyes—all of her. I could read her, no guesswork needed. Perhaps that was what drew me to her in the first place, the way she telegraphed her emotions directly to me, as if we were connected by a thin, invisible wire.

***

Link could never be anything other than a moron in a white hat. No matter how hard he tried, he wouldn’t be able to save Camille from me, because, in the deep recesses of her heart, she craved me. The fair maiden wanted the monster more than she needed the knight.

***

She stared into my eyes, but she wouldn’t find any comfort there. Just me, a man dead set on possessing her.

***

“You’re a monster.”
“I know.”
“Someone will find me.”
He leaned closer, the tip of his nose brushing mine. “Someone already has.”
“What are you going to do to me?” I swallowed hard, my mouth dry.
“Keep you safe. Keep you close.”

***

“You’re deranged.”
“You aren’t the first to call me that, though I prefer high-functioning psychopath.”

“Just let me go home.”
He kissed the crown of my head. “You are home.”

***

I think that’s what makes me the bad guy—that I’d kill or build, destroy or create for you. If you wished it, I’d do it. All that would matter to me is that you wanted it.

***

“Are you certain I can’t kill him?”
“Yes.”

Final words about the book:

This book and this story is not for everyone. If you cannot stand even the idea of loving a psychopath that kidnaps you, don’t even try the book, it is not safe for you.

But if you are OK with the idea of reading about a psychopath who is learning how to love even though he makes awful mistakes all the while, then please do read this book, it is awesome.

It is captivating. I loved it very much. I loved Sebastian to the moon and back!

Was it wrong to love Sebastian?

Maybe.

***

Did I really love him even when he was acting psycho?

Hell yes!

***

Was it wrong to wish that the heroine would love him as much as I did?

Probably yes.

***

Was theirs a healthy romance?

Probably not.

***

Do I give a shit that I loved this crazy love story very much?

Nope, not at all. I just couldn’t help it. Give me a psychopath like Sebastian, I will gladly take him in real life, too. So sue me.

The book is told by 3 people, Sebastian, Camille & Link.
Link's chapters were not many but they sure helped to understand he didn't deserve Camille at all.

P.S. Warning added as of 28.05.2017
It causes a major book hangover. Nothing has given me the same taste since I read this book. Nothing has come even close to it :( Let me continue my search.

this book just made me want a psychopath to be obsessed with me, kidnap me, and then make me fall in love with them.

is that too much to ask?

you know, i've always separated my expectations when it comes to my book boyfriends and from what i want in men in real life because obviously i don't want an asshole man ho for me let's be real here but- BUT this book just changed EVERYTHING. my expectations, beliefs, etc.

so what do i think about what i want in guys in real life now?

weeeellll...

to a sweet and kind guy who would treat me like a princess?

description

and to a psychopath, Henry Cavill millionaire look-a-like who would rearrange my guts but also treat me like a queen?

description

so, i mean... is there any other way to think about this?

only reason why i didn't give this 5 stars is because the third act was kind of rushed in my opinion and i felt like Sebastian loved Camille more. i just wish for once she actually fought for HIM. my bb deserves all the love he can get, you know? and what in the ever loving hell happened to Lance? i really wanna know because they didn't really talk about it.

aaand im kinda biased since i did study about psychopaths before and i'm pretty sure Sebastian isn't a primary psychopath. maybe secondary, but definitely not primary.

but anyways, if you're like me and want to read about a psychopath who became obsessed with this woman with just one look (while this woman is dating a "nice guy" by the way) then proceeds to become Joe Goldberg (millionaire version) and then kidnaps said woman pulling a beauty and the beast move where he keeps her a prisoner until she falls in love with him? then i recommend this 100%.

... ok now that i described it, this actually sounds super toxic and not at all ideal but i don't care. Sebastian CAN 👏🏼 GET 👏🏼 IT 👏🏼 .

"The more she tried to fly away, the harder I wanted to clip her wings."

The Bad Guy is a stand-alone dark romance/thriller with a complicated hero, a beautiful heroine, and a plot that does not stop. If you are looking for your next anti-hero to fall in love with, look no further. Sebastian Lindstrom is waiting.
description
"I was falling prey to the lure."
Camille Briarlane is a biology teacher living a mediocre life. Although she has a great best friend and a doting boyfriend, she knows that something is missing from her life. When her boyfriend takes her to a work function, she meets his boss Sebastian. A small spark ignites, and deep down in her soul, she feels a stirring that she has been craving for a long time. As her boyfriend begins to press for a bigger commitment from Camille, she knows she isn't ready. A work-study program over the Christmas holiday seems like a perfect escape. If she can immerse herself in science and the study of plants surely she can forget about her boyfriend and the mystery of Sebastian.

description
"You stole everything from me."
Sebastian Lindstrom has it all. He is sexy, powerful, rich, and never had a problem getting what he wants. After meeting Camille, he knows that she is exactly what he wants. She is what he needs. But what happens when Camille isn't ready to be caught?

description
"I want to see things through your eyes."
Told in dual POV, The Bad Guy is exactly the type of read that I LOVE to DEVOUR! Sebastian is my favorite type of hero. He is dark and delicious and driven to do anything in his power to protect Camille. The connection between the two is intense as the pendulum swings between extreme hate and extreme passion. Camille is a strong heroine, and her growth as a character was evident as she tried to identify the force pulling her to Sebastian. The secondary characters enhanced the plot significantly with their vital connections to the main characters. I especially enjoyed the relationship between Sebastian and his father. Who wouldn't want a father that loves you unconditionally? Although not everyone will appreciate the idiosyncrasies that exist in Sebastian, I found his character to be unique and one that I will never forget. If you are looking for a dark romance with smoking hot passion and intrigue, look no further!

description
Overall, I highly recommend The Bad Guy to anyone who likes to take a trip on the dark side. Sebastian and Camille will not disappoint. Celia Aaron has long been one of my go-to authors. Her gifted storytelling never ceases to amaze me. The Bad Guy is another blockbuster hit from Ms. Aaron and I guarantee Sebastian is sure to please.

Genre: Dark/Contemporary Romance
Type: Standalone
POV: First Person - Multiple
Rating:

Camille Briarlane had an unrestrained passion for knowledge. As a biology teacher, she found satisfaction in molding her students into future leaders. On the surface, her personal life with her stable boyfriend looks as good as her professional one, but deep down inside she was craving for something more.

Sebastian Lindstrom knew he was different since he was young. Even though born with a silver spoon, he worked hard to get to where he was now. As the CEO of his family's company, he was no stranger in acquisition and when he laid his eyes on her, he knew he had to have her by any means necessary.

Anti heroes have of way in creeping into readers’ hearts including mine. So of course I couldn't resist meeting this one.

"You had a white knight, but you were waiting for your monster. Here I am.”

At first, I thought Sebastian would be a dark character, but I quickly learned he is not. In traditional sense, his inner self and his actions were dark, but it was portrayed with a lighter, casual feel. I like how he had a strong sense of self, but sometimes I feel he used it too much as an excuse.

This was the second deal with the devil I’d made. How many more before he owned my soul?

What I love the most about Camille is how she won't settle. She knew what's best for herself and took measures to get it.

His cool smile hid a darkness, one that I could feel seeping from him and caressing me with terrible promises.

It was interesting to see their interactions with each other. Both of them ended up in an unfamiliar situation. She was subtly feisty while he was at some points adorably awkward. However, since I'm inclined to darkness, I was hoping for the story to have a darker tone.

I do like the attraction between them. The tension was subtle but it worked well. The sex scenes were limited but they certainly made up by the hotness.

The Bad Guy presents the story of two people finding another side of themselves and adapting to it. It would appeal to readers looking for a lighter shade of dark sexy read.

**The infamous review has returned! *lol* This is the EXACT review that was posted previously. NO changes have been made**

description

descriptionThis cover is OK. The model is hot a sin and a good representation of the hero. The composition is OK. The BAD being off to the right throws it off a little. I think it would have look3ed better lined below THE and above GUY. That's just me though.description

descriptionSigh...this is going to be yet another review where I struggle with what to write. I was looking forward to this one SO much after reading DARK PROTECTOR Unfortunately this one fell WAY short of my expectations. The bones for a great dark read were all there. A psychopath kidnaps a girl, and she falls in love with him. That SHOULD be right up my alley. Alas, the execution just wasn't there. I was pretty much bored out of my mind from 35%-80% of this one. The back and forth let's make a deal stuff went on WAY too long. Because of that I never felt a connection between these two characters at all. Together they were about as exciting as watching paint dry.

description

Sebastian, I did enjoy for the most part, but he could have been SO much more. He is supposed to be a psychopath but Patrick Bateman he was not. I want to cry over how much potential this character had that just wasn't utilized. As for Camille, well let us just say I wasn't a fan. She annoyed the ever loving sh!t out of me. The secondary characters were OK, but again they felt underdeveloped. In fact, I guess that would be my biggest complaint about this one. Everything just seemed underdeveloped and then rushed at the end.

I guess I didn't struggle too much with what to write after all. *lol* I am just bummed that I didn't enjoy this one more. That said I still enjoy this author's writing in general and will continue to give her books a read.description

"You stole everything from me. Everything."
"I'm sorry."
"No you aren't. If you were sorry, you'd let me go."
"I can't."
"You're afraid I'll tell?"
"No."
"Then what?"
"I don't think I can live without you."

Sebastian is the cutest possessive psycho...
When he sees Camille for the first time, he instantly wants her.

Camille is already with someone else ie. the very patient and understanding, blue-balled Link. But it seems that she is interested in the gorgeous Link's boss ie. our boy Sebastian.

When Sebastian starts feeling that the earth moves around Camille (a very strange and unique feeling for him to say the least), he does not behave as a normal human being.

He does not tell her compliments.
He does not ask her out.
He does not send her flowers.

Instead...
He installs cameras at her home.
He organise a fake research expedition at Amazon to lure her.
He kidnaps her and puts an ankle bracelet to her to prevent her from escaping.

The good thing is that...
He never forces her.
He never hits her.
He never manhandles her in order to make her his.

But...
He gives her expensive clothing.
He provides her favourite deserts.
He offers her favourite rare books.
And of course he gifts her with the most perfect greenhouse in order to continue her research.

Where you're concerned, I'll be as creepy as necessary to make you happy.

Lucky girl...who wants her freedom back...
Doesn't she?
Maybe not.
Maybe deep down she likes bad guys.
Maybe her favourite movie is American Psycho with Christian Bale.

I enjoyed this book!
I never ever felt that Camille was threatened.
I don't think that Sebastian is the typical psychopath. He is just unique in his thinking and acting. He is definitely dangerous, but not lost in his mind and his urges.
A calculating person is NOT necessarily a psychopath.

Whoot, whoot! This book contained so much raw power and undeniable emotion, I was completely blown away. Celia Aaron's genius is her ability to create unique and distinct male characters that the reader cares about from the very first paragraph, and she's surpassed herself with this one. Loved it!

I do like a psychopath obsessed with a nice girl!

Sebastian is a true psychopath who grew up with a father similar to Dexter’s. Except not one that gave him rules on who he could safely kill, but one that he could talk to about his lack of emotions and who taught him how to act like a normal human being by reading the faces of others.

Sebastian finally feels something when he meets Camille, but she already has a boyfriend so he decides to just kidnap her. He is pretty funny and actually not a bad guy for a psychopath. I liked him and loved this book.

“I had to let her go, even though murdering Link and tossing her over my shoulder seemed like the more expedient option. My father and the rest of the attendees would likely frown on my behavior.”

It pains me to rate this book 3 stars but sadly it just didn't live up to my expectations :(

THE BAD GUY: by Celia Aaron is a standalone ‘Contemporary Romance’ spoken in ‘Dual Perspectives’

This is an intricate tale of how Sebastian fell under Camille’s spell as soon as he met her. He wanted her, the need to steal her ran rampant through his mind.

Twenty- four year old Camille teaches biology at Trenton Prep and then we’ve got Thirty-two year old Sebastian Lindstrom, A CEO of Lindstrom a forestry company, and the villain of this story.

Sebastian is like no other villain you’ve ever met before, he’s like a walking time bomb, a walking contradiction, when he’s sweet, he’s oh so sweet, the guy is like a robot, he feels nothing, he has no idea what is right or wrong, he takes what he wants and if it doesn’t come to him willingly he just steals it and that is exactly what he does where Camille is concerned.

There she was thinking she was on her way to the Amazon rainforest, wrong she was on a fast track to Sebastian’s house, no one will know she’s missing. Everyone will think she’s right where she should be, her trip of a lifetime, not waking up naked in Sebastian’s bed.
She’s in the hands of an unhinged psychotic man, a man who plans to keep her forever.

Stop reading for a bit, put yourself in her shoes, you wake up naked in his bed, what do you do? You fight, kick, claw your way out of this scary situation, you don’t roll over like a dog and accept what’s happened. This is where all my frustration levels came to the boiling point and it made it hard to connect with the story thereafter.
I loved the premise of the story, it had good bones to be a dark gritty read, but Camille just gave up too soon, where was the fight? The struggle? The tears? The terror? When did that survival instinct kick in? Answer it didn’t

I know it’s wrong on many levels to compare to other books but think ‘Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters’ now if this author had gone that route, and infiltrated the terror and all those kidnapped emotions we’d all expect to feel this book would’ve surpassed all my expectations.

The writing was well done but I think if the above was worked on this book would’ve been a terror filled kidnapped read of epic proportions. Since I'm going for gold I also wouldn't class this as a dark read, more in the lines of 'Contemporary Romance' it did have dark elements but they were made fluffy and glossed over this never actually stepped into the darkness.

The sun doesn’t reduce its heat to assuage the frigid moon.

Sebastian is a psycho who can’t feel anything but he can read people from their behavior, until he meets Camille. With her, he can feel everything. So when he meets her at a gala, he decides to kidnap her. Camille is a stubborn teacher who loves teaching kids. When she meets Sebastian her life changed. She has become a prisoner.

I don’t think it was a Dark-Romance. Actually at some point it felt more like funny with a bit of Dark than a Dark to me. But I expected it Darker. OK, Sebastian supposed to be a psycho but I didn’t feel it (except the kidnapping part). He treated her with respect and he tried to make her unharmed. He was so kind and observant about her and also a controlling one. He had prepared everything for her comfort (except her freedom). I liked both characters and I enjoyed their back and forth. Maybe the thing that I liked more about this book was the writing. Perhaps it was the part that forced me to continue reading.

The story is told in multiple POV, 1st person. it’s a standalone. All in all, it was an enjoyable read and I hope you like it as well.

Sebastian definitely have twisted the way to swoon a lady. He goes beyond the norm and he acts like it’s the right way. When Sebastian saw Camille, he knew right away that he wants her in his life. He did everything with a psychopath brain of his, he kidnapped her, provided her with things she needed and everything money can buy. To Sebastian this is the perfect way for Camille to fall in love with him.

Camille is an intelligent, feisty, science teacher who tries to convince Sebastian that what he’s doing is wrong in every possible way. She didn’t give up on him; she continues to tell him what is right. Finally, Sebastian let go of Camille. Now that she’s free, Camille can’t seem to think other than Sebastian. That let her questioned herself, if it’s possible to fall in love with a psycho?

This book totally wowed me from beginning to end. I want to hate Sebastian, but how can I? I never thought a psychopath can be this endearing. One more thing I like about this story is the different deals between Sebastian and Camille made for each other, mostly involves being in bed… naked.

Of all the books I’ve read from this author, I’m proud to say this is my favorite work of hers so far. If you’re into this kind of read, don’t hesitate to pick this one, it’s worth it!

4.75 'psycho' stars 🌟

Every fairy tale has a villain, someone waiting in the wings to rip it all down. A scoundrel who will set the world on fire if that means he gets what he wants. That’s me.
I’m the bad guy.

I've read dark romances as well as captive romances. This was neither.
This was more of a grey romance with a hero who is a self-proclaimed psychopath and is OBSESSED (did I stress that enough?) with Camille, Link's girlfriend.

His gaze didn’t leave mine. “I’d do anything for you. Except let you go.”
“This is insane.”
“No.” He moved closer, heat coming off him in waves. “This is exactly as it should be.”

Sebastian is a stalker so meticulous and thorough, I'm almost proud of him! Oh, my dark heart. 🖤

I relished the reverberating pain of her teeth marks. “Next time, draw blood.”
“Psycho.”
I kissed her hair again and relaxed into my pillow. “Your psycho.”

Let me just lazily introduce the characters:
-> Sebastian is just the sweetest psychopath ever! He is charming even without knowing or trying.
-> Camille is a very strong heroine. I loved the fact that she didn't just accept and give in to Sebastian's obsession with her.
-> Link is, frankly, a piece of shit. Whenever we got a chapter from his view, I was like "What the hell are you doing here? No one wants to listen to your idiocy!"

I think that’s what makes me the bad guy—that I’d kill or build, destroy or create for you. If you wished it, I’d do it. All that would matter to me is that you wanted it.

Where do I get my 'bad guy'? *sobs in the corner*

Sebastian isn’t for the faint of heart. He’s deeply flawed, but even villains deserve love.

Celia Aaron's writing is phenomenal. I could not put this book down! To all my dark-hearted twins, please read this book. 🖤

P.S.: This book had been sitting on my TBR shelf for almost a year, and I'm mentally kicking myself for not getting to this sooner!

"I was wrong." I propped my chin on his chest and stared into his eyes. "You aren't the bad guy after all. Psycho? Yes. But you're the hero of my story."

I knew Camille's boyfriend was shady the moment I read that his name was "Link". Excuse me, there are a million names out there and you chose to name your child Link. He was doomed from the start. More to that later.

Sebastian, you on the other hand, you're baby. Was it wrong to stalk, install cameras and audio in different apartments, spy on your obsession/crush for weeks and ultimately kidnapp her? Yes. Do I give a shit? No. Sebastian Lindstrom never did anything wrong in his entire life. Anyone who wants to fight me on that. Do your worse.
"I never want to hurt you." He shook his head. "I'll kill anyone who does."
"You're deranged."
He smirked, the quirk of his lips cruel. "You aren't the first to call me that, though I prefer high-functioning psychopath."
"If you're going to stab me, I'd use the fork. It would leave a better impression. More badass than a dull butter knife, don't you think?" His face was calm, but I could feel him laughter at me.
"You're an asshole."
"You're a name caller."
"Oh, by the way." His voice floated back to me. "You missed the perfect chance to fork me when I was leaning down to see about your ankle."

YOU MISSED THE PERFECT CHANCE TO FORK ME... Why does this guy has to be the most adorable and most annoying high-functioning psychopath on earth. 😂😭 I can't with him. Sebastian was cracking me up so much. He should consider stepping down as a CEO and become a comedian.

No matter what will happen in 2020, Sebastian is going down as one of the most memorable heroes I had the pleasure of reading. I love how sick his mind was, but when it came to Camille he was the sweetest guy.

I could have lived without these chapters from Link POVs, like I understand why the author inserted these chapters to give us additional information, but I gagged when I had to read about all these blowjobs Link got. Ewww, thank you but take them. Instead of using these chapters on Link, Celia should have used them for the end, which was rushed.

Would highly recommend this for people who have a soft spot for heroes who think a bit different and don't mind the captor/captive trope :D

*4.5* She was mine. Even if I had to steal her.

Everyone was right about this book. Phew, that was fun!

I classify this as a stalker-lite. (vs the much darker Twist Me series by Anna Z)

“You’re light, but you crave the dark. You crave me.”

From his immediate obsession with her, to all of his sneaky plans, I loved it!

Contemporary suspense/romance
Dark-ish
Everything is consensual, with the exception of the kidnapping
He is so patient, like a spider carefully wrapping up a fly
No virgins (no manwhore behavior either)
The relationship Sebastian had with his father was perfect
I love that the h is a biology high school teacher
The H is CEO of his own company
HEA

“I’m not a robot.” I sat down near her, the tile warm beneath me. “I’m a psychopath.”

The heroine: Sebastian Lindstrom - CEO of an international forestry company, owned by his father. Sebastian is a true psychopath who grew up with a father similar to Dexter’s. Except not one that gave him rules on who he could safely kill, but one that he could talk to about his lack of emotions and who taught him how to act like a normal human being by reading the faces of others.

The Hero: Camille Briarlane - high school biology teacher with a boyfriend, Link who works for Sebastian. Link keeps trying to get Camille to move in with him in the city, since she teaches at a prep school two hours away.

The Story: Sebastian finally feels something when he meets Camille, but she already has a boyfriend so he decides to just kidnap her. He is pretty funny and actually not a bad guy for a psychopath. I liked him and loved this book.

“I had to let her go, even though murdering Link and tossing her over my shoulder seemed like the more expedient option. My father and the rest of the attendees would likely frown on my behavior.”

The story was told in multiple points of view and the narration was done by Lance Greenfield, Stephen Dexter and Erin Mallon. Erin has an intelligent and soft spoken voice that worked well for Camille. Lance Greenfield has a deep gravelly voice that was absolutely perfect for Sebastian.

I like the fact that Camille kept calling Sebastian a robot because it is so obvious he has never felt emotions before. He is confused by her and is used to mimicking the facial reactions of others in order to appear human, despite the fact that he doesn’t understand what people feel. He has no compunction about breaking laws to get what he wants at work and with Camille.

Sebastian is an extremely intelligent man, but it is funny how he just doesn’t get some things and/or doesn’t care about certain things because he doesn’t understand feelings. Not only that but he doesn’t care about right and wrong because he doesn’t understand what it is to care. He just wants what he wants and goes after it.

I also thought it was pretty funny how Sebastian swore he would never hurt Camille and he thinks that holding her captive is for her own good. I like to see how his mind works and I like the fact that he does think she is precious and doesn’t want to see her physically hurt.

Wow!  This was just what I needed at the moment.  A hero who's a little bit left of center and refuses to abide by the rules of society.  Okay.... he's a long way left of center, but totally my kind of psycho!! I freakin loved Sebastian. Why oh why do I love psycho OTT stalkers?! And where can I find more of them? LOL

Here's the breakdown:  Tall, dark, cold hearted, Sebastian Lindstrom finally finds something that makes his cold heart thaw.  Camille, the beautiful girlfriend of his employee beckons to him on a level he's experienced before.  Acting on his impulses, he steals her away in an attempt to make her fall in love with him.  The story that unfolds afterward twisted and entertaining.

Here's what I loved:The cover made me do it! Yep, my inner cover slut came out to play and I'm glad she did!
Sebastian - the character is intriguing and entertaining.  Getting to know him was a definite treat.  I'm always fascinated by characters who buck societal norms and break all the rules.  Sebastian embodies this notion perfectly!
The introduction - It's one of the best I've read.  It immediately grabbed my attention and led me down the rabbit hole like a willing captive...pun intended.
The storyline -   The Bad Guy is on the surface, upfront and open, but slowly the plot takes a turn and the reader questions the main premise.  Is Sebastian really the bad guy?  Or is he a black knight?
The ending -  I'm a sucker for epilogues.  This one did not disappoint.  It gave me everything I wanted.
The emotional aspect of the story, especially Sebastian's relationship and dialogue with his father was a real treat.  It was one of my favorite aspects of the story.
My only slight issue is that I expected the book to be much darker than it actually was.  I haven't decided if I misunderstood the blurb or read more into it, but I expected this book to be dark and that's not how I'd label it.  I'd classify it more as a read that focuses on mental illness or psychological romance read. Regardless of that, I really enjoyed The Bad Guy and it left me craving more.  My Celia Aaron cherry has been popped!! 🍒

I'm happy to report my first time was a pretty good. This trope is fast becoming one of my favorites and I want more!! Although this was my first read by Celia Aaron, it definitely won't be my last.  I enjoyed the writing and Sebastian made a definite impression.  Recommended for fans of slightly-dark, psychological romance.

what did i just read 🤧🤧😭🤣😭💀🤣

ok i didn't like this book for these reasons:

① right off the bat i felt like i was missing 50 pages of context to make this story make sense. i reread the beginning twice to check if i was missing something bc i couldn't believe that the first time he saw her he was thinking all those crazy things. i would've found it more believable if he'd said he'd been stalking her prior to the story opening bc it would explain why his fascination was at that level upon first meeting her. he was straight up in love w her at first sight and ya girl did. not. understand.

② i didn't appreciate all his bloody horror fantasies bc i knew he wouldn't follow through on them. don't tease me like that i take my horror very seriously

③ sebastian was not a real psychopath. so him labeling himself as one and repeating it every two pages was a big fat no <3 from me. the writing rly waterboarded us with how much sebastian has to mimic human emotions and it was just trying way too hard for me.

④ this book was just straight odd a lot of the time

for context, this quote is from when sebastian is watching her through cameras he installed in her boyfriends apartment:

“Why do you do that?” Link paused the movie and grabbed the empty popcorn bowl.
“Do what?” Once free from his grasp, she leaned on the sofa’s arm, finally looking relaxed.
He walked toward the kitchen. “You sort of fidget whenever the bad guy’s on screen.”
“No I don’t.”
“You so do. Remember Avengers? Loki?”
She shrugged. “Not really.”
“You fidgeted then, too. The Joker—I’m talking Heath Ledger and the Jared Leto one. Fidget.”
“No I didn’t.” She turned to glare at him.
“Ramsay Bolton, Game of Thrones? Fidget.”
“Okay, now I know that one’s a lie.” She shook her head. “I wanted him dead just like everyone else.”
“But you fidgeted.”
“Maybe I was itchy.” She turned and settled back into the sofa as the soft pops of the corn tinkled through my speakers.
I leaned forward, touching her image as she denied her attraction to black hats, villains, and demented devils. Her white knight was onto something for once in his useless life. She was made for me, just as I’d been fashioned from the darkest materials for her. Her light would temper my shadow.

i found this to be such a weird exchange cause:

④ⓐ truly bizarre foreshadowing. what a weird way to highlight that she has a subconscious thing for bad boys

④ⓑ you're telling me she gets so turned on every time a villain comes on the screen that she's visibly squirming in her seat, that hot and bothered, even when she's in public? it's that bad?

④ⓒ girl i like villains too (more than the average person i'd say) but ramsay bolton? even i'm judging you for that

now the reasons i added the .1 to my rating:

① mint baxter was a total gem, only likable character in this book

② link's povs cracked me up. i feel like the ott-ness of his povs were a concentrated version of this entire book. celia aaron went so far out of her way to make him the biggest douchebag ever and the clownery just made me laugh

so even tho i thought this was really, really, really bad, it still was unintentionally funny so.. 1.1 stars

5/5 ⭐️ I started reding this book a few months ago and put it on hold because I wasn’t in the mood but I decided to pick it back up and I was not disappointed!

Sebastian was a literal psychopath who was obsessed with his Camille from the very start. That is my favorite type of hero 🥰. I love an unapologetic hero who takes what he wants! I loved Sebastian and his obsession with Camille. She low-key craved his darkness though and I loved that.

Camille started the story off with a bf and I LOVED Sebastian’s jealousy every time he touched what he considered was HIS 😂🙌🏼. He wanted her to himself so he decided to kidnap her.

I honestly LOVED Sebastian. Camille was the only one who could make him feel any type of emotions 🥺. His childhood memories really tugged at my heartstrings.

Camille was a sweet and caring person. Her reaction to being kidnapped was definitely believable. Although she was attracted to Sebastian, she was still trying her hardest to resist him.

I loved that throughout the whole book Sebastian is literally telling Camille that he wants to keep her forever and just make her happy. I was actually swooning with how he treated her 🥰🥺. He treated her like an actual QUEEN 🙌🏼.

This honestly was not as dark as I thought it would be. He treated her with so much respect. Is it bad that I actually wanted him to be more pushy & intense with her? 🤷🏻‍♀️ lol.

Overall, it was a great read and Sebastian made this story for me.

Wow! What a great compelling story that hooked me from the start. All I seem to be reading lately are sweet contemporary romances, not that there’s anything wrong with that, because contemporary romances are one of my favourite genre’s to read ... BUT … I was looking for something dark and a bit messed up to get my motor running this time and boy did The Bad Guy deliver. I was so compelled to read this story about a villain named Sebastian and nothing could have stopped me, kind of like his obsession.

Camille Briarlane is a biology teacher and wannabe researcher. She loves her job and has a devoted boyfriend who adores her, but her life is perhaps lacking excitement and interest; it’s mundane for the better word. When she attends her boyfriend’s work function she comes into contact with the CEO of Lindstrom, Sebastian.

Something awakens within Camille after that first encounter, almost like a fire was beginning to ignite; she was completely enamoured. Sebastian makes Camille feel both warm and uncomfortable at the same time. His eyes never stray from hers and she becomes quite curious about the allusive CEO.

"I’d heard about love at first sight, though I couldn’t claim that emotion. The need to possess her was what fired through my veins, not the sentimental nonsense of hearts and flowers."

Sebastian is the CEO of Lindstrom, a position he has inherited from his father. He’s dark, handsome and wealthy…..BUT…… he’s also a self-proclaimed psychopath. Once he meets Camille, he knows he wants to, no in fact needs to, possess her and nothing is going to stand in his way. She has fast become his obsession and like true psychopaths, his actions and plans to possess and consume her are in a very premeditated and orchestrated way.

The Bad Guy was told in dual POV which I believed added to the intensity and depth of this compelling story. It truly gave an insight into the characters state of mind, what they were thinking and feeling. It was such a thrilling ride that sucked me right in from the beginning.

This was exactly the kind of story I was looking to sink my teeth into. It was well written with great character development. If you are looking for something a bit dark, a bit messed up, but oh so addictive, then I most definitely recommend you check out this unique story of obsession, intimidation, control and passion. I know for a fact I will never look at the phrase ‘love at first sight’ the same way again.

I wish this whole book was narrated by Sabastien because I’m living for his psychotic inner monologue.

This book has been highly refreshing. The story centers around a man who is certifiably psychotic and he knows it. He was raised by his father who unlike Dexter’s dad who also knew his son was a psychopath, Sebastian’s father taught him how to act in society. He taught him right vs wrong and tried his best to keep him on the straight and narrow.

And for the most part it worked until Sebastian discovered something he couldn’t live without. He had finally discovered someone who made him feel something ... anything. And that person was Camille. Unfortunately Camille is taken.

So Sebastian did what any man would do in his position ... he kidnapped her. He stole her away and hid her in his isolated mansion in the Catskills until she was willing to admit that she was his.

And here’s the kicker; Camille shouldn’t want him, especially after every sin he has committed. But Camille can’t control her attraction to him and everything he makes her feel. But she’s a persistent gal, so I have to like her, and she’ll never fall without a fight.

So what happens when you’ve only been taught wrong from right but you really don’t understand? Will he do the right thing or not? If he does will she come back? Will she ever be his if he does keep her?

Those are the questions and only time will tell with this one. But the biggest question is who’s the bad guy?

I think that maybe I’m being extra picky with my psychopaths. Or maybe this just wasn’t for me? I still don’t know why tho, because I usually enjoy books or movies that have a psychopath character in them and I find them really interesting. But this one didn’t give me the same feeling. It felt kinda ordinary? Dull? Okay? Unreasonable? And I know how stupid this might sound because it’s supposed to be unreasonable, right? I just would’ve loved any sort of explanation for the kidnapping! I knew that he was going to kidnap her before I start it. But it felt kinda stupid? Why kidnap her when she was obviously attracted to you? Why don’t you just ask her out? I don’t know!

I didn’t like the characters. I hate to say that, but they just felt stupid, I think. They just weren’t right. It was like they were really trying to fit into their characters. The hero was trying too hard to convince you that he’s “the bad guy.” Like fine I got it!! This was supposed to be a dark romance, but it took a really cheesy route.

I need Sebastian to kidnap me

If wanting that is wrong, well then I don’t wanna be right 🤣. I just love how OTT obsessed and protective he is 🫠. We need more Hs like him 😮‍💨

My old review is down below (my style was different back then), but I’m gonna add some things I especially luuurved this time around 😉

What I loved possible spoilers
—the negotiations and barters 👀. I love how Camille knows that Sebastian’s obsessed with her, so she’s willing to negotiate with him 🤣 (like, don’t throw those books away for a kiss, eats her 🐱in exchange for her “boyfriend’s” life, 3 days in the city in exchange for sleeping naked and cuddling, you know… normal stuff 🤡🤣🤣🤣)

—the 🔥. I couldn’t get enough. So 😮‍💨much 👀 tension🥵

—his favorite flavor is Camille 🔥🫠

—you run, I chase 😈

—carrying her everywhere 🥹🫶. Gah. I wanna be carried 😭

—the sex talk with his dad when he was a teenager had me 🤣 but also 🫣

—“ask me for it” 🫠🫠🫠

—Sebastian’s dirty mouth 🥵

—watching American Psycho 🤡🤣🤣🤣

—getting her favorite foods and hobbies 🫶🥹. He’s just so good

—looking at her body language and ensuring she’s happy ❤️

—not me crying about a legit psycho 😭🥹❤️❤️❤️

—OMD 😈 and kicking some assssss 💅

Some of my favorite quotes
Right before I lost sight of her, she turned and smiled at me, as if sending me a spark of hope. The spark lit an inferno. It blazed up and promised destruction for anything that got between us. She was mine. Even if I had to steal her.

“Where you’re concerned, I’ll be as creepy as necessary to make you happy.”

You had a white knight, but you were waiting for your monster. Here I am.”

“Let’s just say that she’s going to keep running, but she’s fine with letting me catch her every so often.”

I wish I could give this book more than 5 stars! This is my first book by Celia Aaron and I loooove her writing style. I have never read a book where the H is a psycho, literally- someone who lacks empathy. I’m so glad I dove into this book! The heat from the H and the h alone sold me.

We first meet Sebastian and Camille leading separate lives. Camille is with Link and has been with him for a little while. She attends a work function and that’s where she meets the hot-as-sin Sebastian. Sebastian is enthralled by her, and because he’s diagnosed as a psycho, he can’t stop looking at her (to the point where people feel the awkwardness). Side note- I love Sebastian’s stream of consciousness- it allows us to explore the state of mind of his psychotic behavior🥰. I especially appreciate the flashbacks to his childhood and traumas- again, all of this added dimension to his character; plus, it gave us insight as to why he behaves a certain way or what his motivations to do things are. Camille admits to herself that there’s something intriguing about him, but she has Link, her white knight- the man that’s been there for her after losing her parents. Regardless of the time they’ve been together, she can’t move forward with him- they haven’t been intimate😅(red flag here lol but I wasn’t complaining). There’s something holding her back🤷🏻‍♀️. She would have never guessed that she needed a little bit (or maybe a lot of bit lol) of darkness to really succumb to the pleasure achieved through intimacy😉.

Sebastian is a successful man; he’s actually Link’s boss. He maneuvers himself to steal a dance from Camille 😉😅(meanwhile, Link is uncomfortable and notices how he looks at her). As they’re dancing, he takes advantage of their private time and discusses her interests and goals in life. She’s a science high school teacher who is all about plants (botany). This piques Sebastian’s interest and uses it to his advantage when he kidnaps her😈. Which he does😈.

When Camille gets a call that she will be able to travel to the Amazon and conduct research, she is ecstatic! This was a dream of hers, one she mentioned to Sebastian (and one Link doesn’t fully support). She doesn’t realize that all of this is a ploy in order for Sebastian to kidnap her. Which he does😈👏🏻.

In her “prison,” Camille can do whatever she wants, as long as she stays on the property. She doesn’t have any contact with the outside world, but she’ll always have contact with Sebastian. Sebastian would move heaven and hell to make her happy (swooooon🥰❤️), except let her go😬. In his mind, they’re meant to be, no matter how many times he has to clip her wings.

Oh Sebastian. What an intricate character you are. He’s seductive and intuitive when it comes to attracting Camille and giving her what she needs (😉). Their attraction is intense. It’s raw, visceral, sexy, palpitating and delicious🥵🔥. He’s patient with her and only pushes her so much, especially when it benefits both😅. Although she fights him (oh man, does she fight him! Those were my favorite scenes🔥🥵) she can’t help but feel that stomach-plunging, moth-to-a-flame connection to Sebastian. I mean, even I had my breath stolen as I was reading. It was scrumptious and explosive *chef’s kiss*. The heat level and sexy times were nuclear. I loved every single moment (too bad there weren’t THAT many of them). The way she barters with him was genius 😂😅🔥🥵.

I looooved this

⚠️safety squad⚠️
-no cheating/sharing/owd
-mental health/psycho
-mention of parental deaths
-OMD: the h has a “boyfriend” that she’s never slept with (who sleeps with ow because of it 🙄 and is just smarmy)
-attempted SĄ: the om gets aggressive with the h. The H takes care of him 💅
-dirty talk/p slapping/mutual biting/marking/anal play
-no condoms or mentions of their past history 😬. For some reason, this didn’t bother me 😅. She’s not a virgin, but we don’t know how long it’s been for her. As for him, we also don’t know 🫣 but somehow it didn’t bother me like it normally does 😅

I really liked this book! It was my first by this author, and it was so good, I bought another one, which I didn't like nearly as much, so I won't be reading more of her books for a while.

BUT. This book was awesome!

description

What I liked about it:
The guy's POV, perfect hero-anti-hero. I love heroes that are baddies with a soft, mushy heart. And I couldn't resist the opener--the villain gets the girl? Count me in!

description

The psychopath who's good. I really like unusual heroes and heroines, people that are normally marginalized in real life. I like getting glimpses of how their brains work, the abnormal logic they go thru. It's fascinating. And there's a ruthlessness to the hero that is actually pretty addictive. He would have made a great conqueror of empires in another time

The writing - CA really explores the emotions and thought processes in depth, the character building is superb. I am typically more drawn to character books than to plot books. This one really got me.

What I didn't like:
Not much. I thought the heroine was meh. The star of this novel is obviously the hero, and I just can't get enough of him!

And yes, if this book was ever made into a movie, nobody would fit the role better than Charlie Hunnam. Just look at the cover@!

I had mixed feelings about this book. I enjoyed some parts of this story enormously, but the others bored me to tears, especially in the second half. And honestly, finishing this one felt more like a chore than entertainment.

However, I somehow found Sebastian's serious obsession and twisted love toward Camille very interesting and fascinating. I don’t know why but it just worked for me in more ways than one. Camille's character and her weakness, on the other hand, somewhat rubbed me the wrong way. I didn’t expect her to be such a pushover. Instead of making stupid deals with Sebastian again and again, she should have stood her ground and fought him with every weapon she had in order to make him set her free. It looked more like she developed Stockholm syndrome for her captor, and well, I don’t know… in my opinion, it wasn’t romantic by any means.

I have to say that the blurb and the cover made it sound like a very dark read, but it turned out that it wasn’t that dark. Not even close to my expectations. This book fell a bit flat in comparison to its promising premise. To be honest, it had a ton of potential and a very intriguing plot, but sadly, it didn’t quite hit its mark. The story ended up less impressive and didn’t deliver as I hoped.

Nevertheless, this was an ok read for me despite its slow pace. Neither mind-blowing nor disappointing, if you ask me. The writing was excellent and accessible though.

3.5 "I loved Sebastian" stars!

One of the things I love most about reading is finding something to love despite not absolutely loving the story itself. Celia Aaron has a quirky and slightly dark way of looking at love in THE BAD GUY. For all intents and purposes, we should want to see her hero suffer, but I couldn't help but root for him to have a happy ending. Diagnosed as a psychopath, Sebastian has spent his life mimicking "normal" behavior, until he comes across Camille. He becomes obsessive and possessive and not even her boyfriend can keep them apart. Taking a page from one of my favorite tropes, Sebastian was the benevolent captor to his captive, Camille. Surely, given enough time, she too would see how perfect they were for one another.

And there lies my problem with this book. I was expecting it to be darker. This was more dark-lite. Sebastian, although crazily, insanely controlling and dominant, wasn't crazy or insane enough. I still really liked him. I liked that when he was with Camille he was finally able to experience what "normal" was. I truly enjoyed how he described how he was feeling, especially after never feeling anything before, whether it be love, hate or jealousy. The author created a wonder in Sebastian and maybe I wish there was more to the story so that it could develop into something darker.
