Happily Letter After

Rate this book
From New York Times bestselling authors Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward comes a love story about taking chances, and the surprises that come with them.

My love story all started with a letter.

Only it wasn’t from the man I’d eventually fall in love with. It was from his daughter.  A sweet little girl named Birdie Maxwell who’d written to the magazine that I worked for.

You see, once a year, my employer fulfilled a few wishes for readers. Only that column didn’t start up again for months.

So I fulfilled some of her wishes myself. It was harmless…so I thought. Until one day I took things too far.

While anonymously granting yet another of Birdie’s wishes, I got a look at her father. Her devastatingly handsome, single dad father.

I should have stopped playing fairy godmother then. I should have left well enough alone. But I just couldn’t help myself.  I had a connection to this girl. One that had me acting irrationally.

Like showing up on their doorstep.

my girls vi and penelope are back at it again with another sweet, adorable story.

i really enjoyed this. im generally not into the single dad trope, but theres just something about birdie and sebastians relationship that makes it impossible for me to not love this story. i understand exactly what sadie sees in them and i would also try to sneak my way into their life asap, so i get it.

although there is one tiny little side plot that pops up towards the end that feels a little too convenient/unrealistic for my liking, this story is pretty dang great. especially for the upcoming holiday season!

I am disappointed.
This book was pretty good and then boom: racism and stereotype of chinese people.
Here is the quote that I do not even know why it exists.
(Little backstory so you all can get the scene)

So Sadie and Seb are sitting in bed and eating chinese Take out. Sadie told Seb that she is adopted and took one of those "23and me DNA tests" she then proceeds to tell Seb that she is 4% chinese, But then she says this:
"Ever since I found that out, I feel like I got better at chopsticks."
ehhhh what??? We would think the author would not make this any worse than it is but guess what? They do.
Seb then proceeds to pick up his chopsticks but "fumbles" with them and almost drops the food and then says:
"Must be because I'm not 4 percent chinese"
I- why? why say this stuff???

Edit: I wanted to add a screenshot of what the author then writes on the last page but I can’t so:

The daughter then proceeds to call herself a derogatory slur against bi-racial people.
MIND YOU THE AUTHORS ARE BOTH WHITE.

It is a word that describes dogs or as the definition says: stupid or incompetent people.

I don’t know why they used this to describe a person in this book. It’s absolutely disrespectful to so many people out there.

So no, I do not recommend this

Honestly it was a pretty average book.
It didn’t really pull much of any of my feelings.

Plot
Sadie gets a letter from a little girl named Birdie, whose mother passed away from cancer a few years back. Those letters consisted of asking Santa how her mother was doing and about some things she wanted. Sadie then went out of her way to help the little girl by secretly bringing her the things she requested as gifts. Which later led into Birdie and Sadie having a more personal relationship through the letters. Until one day Sadie goes to drop off her gift for Birdie when she see’s Sebastian Maxwell AKA hot dad.

One thing leads to another and Sadie ends up pretending to be a dog trainer which takes her straight to the Maxwell house. However, Sadie does confront Sebastian early on about it and he tells her to continue with the charade as Birdie had personally confided into Sadie.

And thus starts the love story between Sadie and Sebastian and a strong bond between Sadie and Birdie.

Spoilers Ahead

Now regarding the ex wife Amanda, I BELIEVE that Sebastian wasn’t in LOVE LOVE with her. Here is why.

So Amanda and Sebastian meet at college, fall in love and get married. Then Amanda gets drunk and cheats on Sebastian. After that they both still tried to make the relationship work, they even went to couple counseling. But things didn’t work out and they separated. The ONLY reason they got back together was because Amanda got cancer.

“We were just starting to adjust to living on our own when Amanda found out during a routine exam that her ovarian cancer was back. It put things into perspective. I’d never stopped loving my wife, and she needed me.”

“I don’t know how things would have worked out had she not gotten sick. But it doesn’t matter. Sometimes in life you need a little push to get where you should be. Her illness was my push. We made it work, and I was in awe of the strength she had, watching her fight every day. I have a lot of guilt that she died thinking I only stuck around because she was sick.” He shook his head. “I did love her. I really did.”

So yeah, if you are one of those people who don’t like books where the H is still hungover the ex or she was the greatest love etc etc, you don’t have to worry about that.

Now the thing in the book, which PERSONALLY for me was not needed and a let down.
The whole egg drama.
So Amanda couldn’t get pregnant so they used another woman’s egg. And got baby Birdie.
But then later on in the book Sadie tells Sebastian that she had also frozen her eggs and given it out for free to a couple that needed it.
Sebastian came to a conclusion that there is a chance that Birdie could be Sadie’s because
1) She donated her eggs
2) Amanda had saved Sadie’s articles

Which led him to believe Amanda knew and etc etc.

And I was here like. Nope. Not needed. As it was turning into one of those cliche books. Also Sebastian pulled some shady shit by taking Sadie’s DNA without her permission and sent it to the labs for a test. No, he didn’t open the results and told Sadie about it first. But she was normal about it.
And I’m here like HELLO FREAK OUT PLEASE. INVASION OF PRIVACY. I was desperate for some drama honestly. The only drama that happened here was when the dog ate the engagement ring, which led to Sebastian not proposing to Sadie which led to a disappointed Sadie.

It all start with a letter from a sweet 10-year-old girl to Santa Claus - in which she asks for socks without holes for her father, black olives, and... "a special friend" for her and her dad. 🎅💙✉
Sadie, who works for the magazine and in charge of Santa's column, receives the letter and falls in love with Birdie. She feels a special connection to her - because they share a lot in common - and so, she sends her small gestures to make her happy. But then, curiosity (and a butterfly) leads Sadie straight to Birdie and her father, Sebastian Maxwell's, door steps... and everything changes! 💥💥💥

📚 “𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐤𝐧𝐨𝐰 𝐢𝐟 𝐢𝐭’𝐬 𝐟𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐨𝐫 𝐚 𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐳𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐢𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨𝐠𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫. 𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐢𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐚𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐤𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞.” 📚

I really liked the idea of the story... I loved the characters... but mostly, I LOVED the connection between Sadie and Birdy - it was so sweet! 💙😭
The first half was great (the "Flunkerbsht" incident made me laugh out loud! 😂) but unfortunately, the second half was predictable - and towards the end, it all became a big Telenovela. 🙈
Plus, even though it had a lot of touching parts (that almost made me cry), the romance felt flat and the chemistry between the characters was... just OK. Also, the solution was too convenient and a bit unrealistic. 😬
However, as always when I read books by Vi and Penelope, I found myself finishing it with a huge smile on my face. 💙💙💙

📚 “𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐠 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐦𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐟𝐞𝐞𝐥 𝐛𝐮𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐬𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐦.” 📚

I recommend this book if you're in a mood for a sweet and fun read. 🎅❤😍

Our hearts are made up of all different broken pieces that belong to others, and when we find the right one, they show us how they can all fit together again.

This is my favorite Vi Keeland/Penelope Ward cover, so I was excited to get to the book. I love single parent romances and I was intrigued by the blurb. I enjoyed this one so much. I especially loved all the interactions with Sebastian's daughter Birdie, and our heroine Sadie. I also really loved the twists and turns throughout this one. I honestly didn't see it coming. This one was full of emotion and had just the right amount of steam and laughs. A strong 4 star read with great narration. Highly recommend the audio.

Nope, sorry. This was no good. It felt like something between 1 and 2 stars...

To be frank, I was not going to read this book at all because the blurb didn’t appeal to me and I don't like single-parent books but then I read some good reviews about it and changed my opinion.

Sadly, I was right about my instincts. This book has so many things I dislike in a romance book and then some. It is not my type of book and in my opinion, it is one of those books this duo failed in. Again. I have read some really good books from these writers, individually or as a duo but the bad ones have now surpassed the good ones and that is just too sad.

Why did I dislike this book?

Here are my reasons. I hope, if you also hate what I hate, my review will help you.

1. First of all, in a 260-page book, the hero and heroine meet on page 49. That is too late for me.

*********************************************

2. Secondly, the heroine lies to the hero when they meet and pretends to be someone else. She didn’t have to; it was just silly and unnecessary.

I hate people who lie and impersonate another person. I would never trust that person again.

*********************************************

3. As she impersonates a dog trainer, she sometimes makes a fool of herself with her limited knowledge.

I resent writers who put their heroines in embarrassing situations.

*********************************************

4. There is a dead ex situation. The hero’s wife died of cancer. Although there was a time when they had problems in their marriage, her being cancer brought them together again and he says he loved his wife no matter what.

*********************************************

5. As if the dead ex situation weren’t depressive enough, he feels guilty about moving on! That's very unappealing in a romance book.

*********************************************

6. As the hero feels guilty about moving on and is only interested in the physical act of intimacy rather than feelings, he doesn't make the first move. The heroine is the main pursuer in this relationship.

I prefer it the other way around. I prefer it when the man chases the woman.

*********************************************

7. Their relationship is very boring. I couldn’t even enjoy their kissing/lovemaking scenes.

*********************************************

8. There are TOO MANY coincidences and it is too cheap to put them all together in a book to make it feel magical.

It wasn't magical for me and I hated it. I’d read a children’s fairy tale if I needed such an unbelievable story.

*********************************************

9. As I said before, I rarely read single-parent books because in my opinion, children are not romantic and they should only appear at the end of a romance book, in the Epilogue, or never appear at all.

If there is a child at the beginning of a romance book, they will play an important role in their relationship and the parent will always prioritize their child and I don’t like such stories. I prefer it when the man and the woman prioritize each other.

I know many readers love single-parent books and there is nothing wrong with that; I am just not one of them and I don’t like such books. Maybe it is because I have always refused to be a parent, so it is me - my problem, not the book but it is also one of the reasons why this book didn’t work for me. There are too many scenes about the child and I don’t like it. Plus, they are way too boring.

I usually enjoy scenes with animals but in this book, the animal didn’t come alive – I didn’t feel anything about the dog. And I adore dogs. This is definitely the writers’ fault. The scenes with the dog were terrible – very superficial, devoid of emotion and terribly boring.

*********************************************

10.

For me this book it was a little bit more heavier than their other books! There were moments Iwas emotional! The romance was so good, it has slow burn and it was sexy at some points and we have a single dad!Do I need to say more??

This is a top recommendation, I loved it!

I usually enjoy reading this writing duo when I need something fun and sweet yet also has a twist and turn in the story. Happily Ever After did not disappoint.

I liked both the Sadie and Sebastian BUT there was one eye rolling moment with Sadie that I seriously had to walk away because it was just so ridiculous. To me, the star of the story was Birdie, Sebastian’s daughter. She was just adorable with such a big heart and the reason Sadie and Sebastian come together.

This was a great fast and fun read with a little déjà vu going on.

Sadie was a columnist when she received a dear Santa letter from a little girl name Birdie Maxwell, bound by the comments of her dear Santa letter Sadie felt compelled to fill her request although it was early summer and no where near Christmas. All Birdie wanted was some socks for her dad, olives a Great Dane named Maraduke and a special friend. Sadie fulfilled most of the request because her and Birdie had a kinship their mother had both die of cancer. Sadie started to get excited as weeks would go by and she would continue to get letters from Birdie and she loved making sure the request of be met, none were over the top so it was always Sadie's pleasure. Sadie's best friend suggest they go Spy on Birdie during one request because they were excited to see her face once she got the surprise of seeing the black horse with white mane on one merry-go-around trip. Birdie always believe it was her mother as a butterfly coming to her. Once Sadie saw Birdie's dad she instantly fell into shock that the dad was the tall, dark and handsome version. Then the day came when Sadie took things one step too far. Sadie found a butterfly clip in front of their house and knew it was Birdie's, now you ask how she ended up not only in front of their house she ended up at their doorstep. Taking her dear Santa wishes to another level and it was all due to the connections she felt with Birdie until Sebastian Maxwell opens the door and Sadie makes another decision that send her down the rabbit hole, that hopefully she will be able to dig herself from.

What a wonderful story. Exciting until the very end. It was so sad and so exciting. I was happy with the ending. I felt it would end that way. The connection between these two authors is amazing. This story will leave you thinking about for a very long time.

This book certainly did a number on my emotions. Let me just sum up everything I felt while reading this book.

At the beginning of the book (when Birdie writes her first letter to Santa), I was like awwww!!! That was so freaking cute; it melted my heart and tugged on my heartstrings. So we were off to a great start.

As the story progressed, I got a bit uncomfortable with the way the heroine, Sadie, ends up meeting Birdie. I understood why she did what she did, but that doesn't mean that put me at ease.

Later, when that debacle got sorted out, I truly loved reading Sadie's relationship with Birdie and Sebastian progresses. It was so gradual and heartwarming. I really wanted things to work out for them.

Moving on, comes chapter 25, and I was able to predict the climax way before it happened. Is it only me who is over the moon when that happens? Comment down below and let me know because whenever I am able to predict the plot twist correctly that makes me feels very smart. Gives me an 'I'm fuck*ng awesome' moment.

Furthermore, I can totally understand what Sebastian did and if I were in his shoes, damn right I would have done the same. So the book gets points for relatability.

Throughout the book, there were some things that were a constant for me: my adoration of Birdie and the star of the show Mardumuke. I LOVED HIM THE MOST!!!

And the epilogue was just the cherry on top.

I loved this book and had a great time reading it but my favorite book by Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland will always be Stuck up Suit. You can't top that level of sheer awesomeness; you just can't.

Getting letters for Santa was not something unusual for Sadie Bisset. As a writer at Modern Miss, she handled a special yearly Holiday wishes section. But when an unexpected off-season letter landed on her desk from a girl with wishes for her father, Sadie took matters into her own hands without realizing where it would lead her.

This book was not at all what I initially expected, but I’m not complaining. I enjoyed this funny, adorable, and heartwarming story. There were many hilarious situations in this book with crazy circumstances, and I loved those. Ironically, I thought the more serious part of the book that was a bit too much lol!

“I don’t know if it’s fate or a series of crazy coincidences that brought us together. But whatever led me to you isn’t as important as what will keep you here.”

Birdie was very cute, even though at times she seemed too young for her age. Sebastian had an understated sex appeal, and his situation made it easy to care for him, while Sadie was caring and daring in her own way.

Happily Letter After is a story of taking chances. It would appeal to readers looking for a warm, lighthearted, family-oriented Romance.

I was inescapably drawn under this book’s spell.

World building: 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
Character development: 👤👤👤👤👤
Plot: 📚📚📚📚📚
Romance: 💕💕💕💕💕
Sexiness: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

Once a year, lifestyle and dating columnist Sadie Bisset also handles the wishes to Santa section. She never expected to get a letter in the middle of summer, much less feel such a strong connection with the little girl who wrote it. But fulfilling a couple of harmless wishes snowballs into a few lies and meeting the girl’s gorgeous yet closed off single father.

Sebastian Maxwell loves his daughter dearly, but after losing his wife to cancer, he’s thrown himself into running his business. The unexpected appearance of Sadie into his and his Birdie’s life though, has brought new light into their lives. And while he wasn’t looking for love, Sadie is driving him insane while she continues to bond with his daughter. And then the truth is revealed and their story gets even more appealing.

Once again the dynamic writing duo Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward craft an epically swoony, sexy, pull at your heart strings romance I could not put down. I laughed, smiled and was delightfully surprised with all the twists and turns. Sadie and Sebastian’s story is deliciously fun, charming and touching because it’s more than just a romance, it’s about family, taking risks, and embracing second chances.

Sadie is a truly wonderful heroine. Her kindhearted, understanding and compassionate heart easily broke down Sebatian’s walls, while his respect and attraction for Sadie helped to deepen their desire. They also had great heartfelt conversations while also being able to poke fun at each other.

The interactions between each character were unique and added a lovely layer to the story, including the rambunctious Marmaduke, Birdie’s Great Dane.
“Daddy, Sadie saved Marmaduke’s life! He was chocking on a ball, and she did the humen remover.”
Did she just say “hymen remover”? Clearly she meant Heimlich maneuver. I would’ve laughed had he not been giving me the death stare.
Sebastian squinted in confusion. “Who’s Sadie?”

Happily Letter After is a standalone contemporary romance by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward. It’s told from both points of view with a beautifully swoony happy ending.

Really sweet story about a widowed 36 year old restaurateur (Sebastian), his 10 year old daughter (Birdie), their Great Dane Marmaduke, and the 29 year old magazine writer (Sadie) who comes into their life.

Oh my, I really don't know where to begin to describe this story. There's a lot of zaniness and hilarity at first ( I was cracking up a time or two over Sadie) just in the way that Sadie comes into their lives and the little lies she tells to keep things going. But you root for her because she's so sincere in wanting to help Birdie (and later her gorgeous dad) but you also worry that these lies can all blow up in her face. Luckily the authors don't let this part of the story drag on, and they resolve it in a logical way, allowing the characters of Sadie and Seb a chance to develop their relationship without lies standing in their way.

There's a lot of topics this story touches on (grief, survivor's guilt, illness, infertility, single parenting) and the authors keep things interesting but most of the time light hearted. You wonder if Sebastian will ever get over the despair of losing his wife and allow himself to love again; you wonder if adorable Sadie will land the man of her dreams and the little girl she's bonded with; you wonder if 'Duke' will ever retain all the commands he's been taught (just kidding). You'll inwardly cheer when Sebastian finally makes a move on Sadie, and swoon when it seems he can't get enough of her. What else could you want? Oh yes, a little curve ball in the story that I should've seen coming sooner. This is what made me think 'ooh, now this is an original twist...this has to be made into a movie!'

All in all a great read filled with some humor, some steamy romance, and most importantly, characters that you root for! I loved it all. And oh yes, a sweet little epilogue down the line that answers the question you most want answered.

Happily Letter After is a stunning tale that reawakens the power of belief. Bound by a connection through common tragedy, good intentions leads Sadie down a spiralling web, of unintentional lies. However, when the truth comes to light, and her true intentions revealed, not only does she find love with a spectacular man, but she forges an unbreakable bond with his daughter as well. Cute, but sorta creepy?

Happily Letter After was super duper cute, but also a bit weird considering the heroine is essentially a stalker who oversteps boundaries and constantly lies for a hot minute. Then towards the end the hero gets a little creepy and kicks dirt on boundaries. I realize this is a romcom, but some of the decisions they made were cringe. THAT being said, the sweet and cute moments outweighed the bad stuff for me. I loved Sadie, Seb, Birdie, The Duke, and all the rest of the characters we meet in this story. If you’re looking for easy, emotional, sweet, and fun, then this is a winner.

When fate takes hold...

A sweet, yet emotional romance about love after loss and a second chance at a Happily Ever After. I shed a few tears, but was left with a really big smile after this poignant romance. This author duo never fails to deliver a touching story with just the right amount of sexy. This single dad romance will make you believe in the power of fate.

Sadie works at a newspaper and during the Christmas holiday she has a feature dedicated to Christmas Wishes. She never expected a letter from ten year old Birdie to change her life. Birdie wants a few little things and a special friend for her dad as her Christmas wish. Sadie immediately feels a connection with the little girl and sends her some gifts to fulfill part of her wish.

It was supposed to be a one time thing, but Birdie continues with her letters and Sadie is compelled to respond. The whole thing quickly snowballs into more than she bargained for. Sadie gets herself into a predicament when she decides to walk by Birdie's home and Birdie's dad Sebastian mistakes her for the dog trainer. And so their love story begins, so much humor and a whole lot of emotion.

Sebastian has been a single dad for four years. After losing his wife, he concentrated on raising his young daughter and working to establish his new restaurant. He has no interest in a relationship. He takes care of his needs when necessary, but it's a no strings arrangement. He never saw Sadie coming, however he can't seem to ignore her once he realizes how bonded his daughter is to her. It doesn't take long for Sadie to become an essential part of both of their lives, even if the start was unconventional.

This single dad romance has all the feels. A sweet little girl, a sexy dad who would do anything to make his daughter happy and a kind hearted woman who can't resist fulfilling a little girl's wish, was the perfect recipe for this special romance that leaves its mark. If you weren't a believer in fate before, you will be after reading this story. Sadie, Birdie and Sebastian were meant to be a family and it all fell into place. It was a little messy, a whole lot funny and a wee bit crazy, but in the end...it all worked out just as it was meant to.

My favorite Vi Keeland and Penelope Ward book so far and in my top reads for 2020!

This is a perfect romance.
Sadie and Sebastian (and Birdie's) story has it all— the right balance between emotional, humorous and steamy. I teared up at certain moments but I also laughed out loud a lot! Birdie is one of the most authentic, well-drawn, adorable and funny kids I've read in ages. Sadie is a relatable, hilarious and incredibly likeable heroine. Sebastian is a charismatic, endearing and sexy af hero. All the ingredients for brilliance :)
I stayed up late into the early morning and read this book in one sitting, left with the contentment and satisfaction that comes with reading a book that strikes the perfect chord every time.

If you're a romance fan you NEED to read this one. It should be on all the 'best of' lists for 2020.
I've even got my fingers crossed for a movie.

A 2020 favorite!

I think this is my favorite Penelope Ward/Vi Keeland co-write to-date! So much fun with a good dose of emotions. All the stars!

Penelope and Vi weaved Sadie and Sebastian's story so well that I found myself guessing, laughing, gasping, and swooning with almost every page. This was a fantastic slow-burn and I enjoyed every page!

I love Birdie Maxwell. Did I love Sadie and Sebastian? Yes, but Birdie stole the show.

This book had all the feels. I laughed and even cried a bit throughout. It was so heartwarming and pulled at my emotions like crazy.

I had barely started the book and knew I was in love from Birdie's first letter.

There were a lot of parallels between Sadie's life growing up and Sebastian and Birdie's lives now. That is most likely why this touched my heart so much. They had all been through a lot before finding one another.

I listened to this on audio and enjoyed it so much. Birdie was brought to life and was so whimsical. I don't think I would have gotten the full feel of her true childlike wonder had I only read words on a page. She brought this story to life. Gosh, I loved her. She was truly adorable. She stole the show or book rather.

This story was original in my opinion. I can't recall reading a story where a child befriends her very own Santa. Then that Santa is actually a woman with such a sweet spirt and feels the need to try to grant the wishes made. That that child, by writing her secret letters would bring two people together. Was it fate? Was it coincidence? Who knows. Would Birdie's father Sebastian have met Sadie under other circumstances. Possibly.
That fact that a little girl helped play matchmaker. Awww.

It was a bit slow going at times and I think without listening to the audio of the book, I may have gotten bored here and there. There were just a couple things that kinda irked me though..

The end of the book was so cute! I giggled out loud about the dog walk and Sadie helping to clean the mess up!

Epilogue was sweet and the story overall was so heartwarming!

Well, I gave it a shot once (2021), managing to get through a few pages before dozing off. Not falling asleep this second time around was a good sign. 🙄 Right?! I'm really really amazed at how GOD has been giving me so much mental strength lately!

Anyway, let me be straightforward: I really appreciate that two great authors Penelope Ward and Vi Keeland, teamed up for this novel, putting in the work to create a heartfelt and emotionally charged story. However, unfortunately, "Happily Letter After" didn't quite meet my expectations, especially considering how much I've enjoyed their previous work.

One of my biggest gripes was the lack of originality in the plot. It followed a predictable pattern that felt too familiar, like many other romance novels I've read. I was expecting a unique and fresh take on the genre, but it ended up falling into the same overused themes and clichés that you often find in modern romance stories.

2.5 Estrellas!

Death, cancer, young children, it just wasn't as light and airy as I'm used to from this pair. I was looking for light airy fun with a side of romance. This had the romance, a cute dog, some funny bits but the shroud of death was brought up so often it just doused the fire.

This one is hard to review. I liked it as well as the little twist at the end, but in some ways the book was average for me. I think it's more of a me thing than the anything else. The writing is very good. I just felt it lacked more of a spark between the main characters. It was like watching a good Hallmark show. I did listen to the audiobook and loved the narrators. I think they did a fantastic job.

It all starts with a letter to Santa...or does it?

Sadie works for a magazine where she mainly writes dating articles, that is, until around Christmas time where she answers letters for Santa.

She gets a particular letter early and it's so cute and sweet that she can hardly not fulfill it even if it's not something she usually does. This starts an almost obsessed journey leading up to her meeting Sebastian. (It gave me a bit of a Sleepless in Seattle vibe.)

Sebastian is a widowed restaurant owner and father to Birdie. He doesn't date but there is just something about Sadie. He's intrigued but her story begins to unravel and it's almost the end of them before she comes clean.

There were some funny moments in the story. I really enjoyed the relationship between Sadie and Birdie. Sebastian's wall was hard to breach but once it was, he was unstoppable.

Can we talk about the twist? I think I was figuring it out or at least heading in the right direction when something was brought to the forefront. Such a good one and I loved how it was confirmed at the end.

Duke was a fun character but the part at the end is not for the weak and not exactly romantic but somehow fitting all at the same time.

I think I'm getting used to these epilogues that are so far (eight years) in the future. It was nice seeing how everything worked out.
