Alien by Mugler is a Amber Woody fragrance for women. Alien was launched in 2005. Alien was created by Dominique Ropion and Laurent Bruyere. Top note is Jasmine Sambac; middle note is Cashmeran; base note is Amber.

Alien spreads an aura, and it claims the right to do that by its very name. Thirteen years after the huge success of Angel, Thierry Mugler challenges the world of perfumery once again.

Alien is a magic elixir captured in a bottle of deep and mysterious purple with the shape of a talisman, reminiscent of a philosopher's stone or some warlock object.

The creators of Alien based the composition on three main lines: warm, white amber in the base, woodsy notes in the heart, and sunny Indian jasmine in the top.

I really want to love this - I love the Mugler ethos and the opening notes are glorious. Sadly, despite repeated tests, its longevity on me is inexplicably poor. This fragrance is renowned for being an all consuming, everlasting sillage bomb - perhaps it lasts longer on other people. And yes - I did check to see whether I had simply gone nose-blind to it but it genuinely appears that I simply don't get much out of this one like other people seem to.

nisarsarah9

Long lasting beautiful scent. However, it makes me a little nauseous. but overall good scent!

Kizzyb93

I bought this many years ago because everyone was raving about it even my partner fell in love with it. However for me it’s just not to my liking find it Very much like if Sherbert had a jasmine flavour It would smell exactly like this. I find it very headachy. I don’t find it sexy I find it meeehhhh This reminds me of English nightclubs when you have the people spraying people down with perfume in the toilets

AncientModernAncient

This smells like India - the only jasmine I truly love. Unfortunately, even at 30, I don't feel like I have the gravitas to pull this off. Maybe someday.

HellyKayden

So here’s the thing lol I wanted to try this because it’s Alien like it’s cool, it’s iconic, it’s unique all that. But on me it’s a little basic. It’s nice don’t get me wrong but I thought there’d be something different or special about it. If you like white florals but don’t want to smell too old ladyish, this is a good option. It’s pretty strong but I felt like it really didn’t last too long. Maybe if it had a vanilla note or something else sweet that would be fun. It’s not bad it is nice but I don’t think it stands out from the crowd the way you think it would.

elenagr22

Nice, sexy but BASIC chick kind of vibe. I cant imagine a grown woman wearing this anymore

*Can be headache inducing

Amazing perfume✨🔥
and I don’t find it too sharp & cloying, idk why ppl keep saying that
Worth to be a signature

Alien is a whiff of jasmine with a hint of amber. It has a fresh, radiant, sparkling side (difficult to put this feeling into words).

I find it minimalist but as I often say, sometimes there is no need to be complicated.

However, it leaves me a little perplexed; Is all this jasmine for me? Well, sometimes yes, sometimes no. I think that to wear Alien you have to be in the right state of mind because this is a fragrance both simple and provocative, soft and insolent.

A true Alien.

Probably the luckiest blind buy I've ever made. I love the smell; it's incredibly nostalgic, though I can't quite figure out why... but, it definitely evokes memories that make me appreciate it even more.

I dab it on all my pulse points and breathe in, unlocking very random suppressed memories, I mostly wear it at home, but not intentionaly, I just want to always smell like this...trully, I never felt this way about a perfume in my life.

kristenboris1997

Sneeze inducing, cannot make out the notes as my nose is so overwhelmed. Not horrible but pretty potent stuff. Just get the white florals mostly and geez, they are so strong.

Paynight

It's pure headache for me.

My mom has a migraine and she get headache with most perfumes but not with this one, she loves it. And i gave it to her.

But for me its so sweet and warm . I think you should test it before blind buy it.

ozomene

With minimal exposure, you can immediately pick out everyone you have ever known who wears this. And to me, while it does smell very strong on other people, it smells fine, too. Certainly weird, certainly confusing, Certainly overpowering. But on the right person, it comes off appropriate somehow. Not on me. On me, it’s nauseating. it is very very far divorced from fragrances I usually wear, but that wouldn’t be an issue if it didn’t turn into nausea fuel on me.

herculano

Its really true.

The vintage version is spectacular.

Compared, the new version is almost a bad joke.

They smell alike, of course, but the vintage is elevated in many ways (not just in terms of longevity or projection, but also rich depth and quality).

I wont wear the new version at all, now that ive experienced the old one.

The new version has a cheaper smell, and the dry down is musty. This mustiness takes over the jasmine entirely.

The jasmine in the old version keeps on singing for hours, joined by the amber, and cashmeran and it's really creamy and beautiful.

I dont get that creamy drydown from the new version at all.

I almost regretted hunting down a vintage this week because i realized i didn't really like the new one much. I thought the claims of it being badly reformulated were overstated and exaggerated (they often are on this site).

But in the case of reformulated Alien, its really true.

If you want to TRULY experience Alien you would do best to get a vintage.

The first ever perfume that I ever used as a teen, borrowed from my mother. Nowadays I realize it's not exactly a teen scent, but it sure smelled elegant and captivating.

It's a very singular perfume, very nuanced and rich. It's both harmonious and contrasting, like white flowers blooming in an elegant dark boudoir. It's a love or hate thing.

Nowadays it does not really feels like "me" anymore: I've used it for too long, it's full of memories but it's kinda struck to my teen self.

jamileenotcurtis

Alien was one of the very perfumes that I ever spent more than $100 on. I smelled it on my cousin and I was hooked. Wore it religiously for months, enough so that if my family or friends smelled this, they would say it smelled like me. However, this scent is not something I would ever recommend to a stranger. Jasmine bomb, which I personally love but others can’t stand. The way this smells on my skin after the dry down is the most addicting part of this scent. Now that I have a large collection of fragrances, I can appreciate the beauty in wearing a scent that is appropriate for the occasion. I will say this is one of those scents that you don’t want to wear to work everyday. It’s a nighttime, sexy, elegant woman, who isn’t afraid to commend the attention of the room. Lasting power is forever and sillage is great. Definitely worth the money, based on the amount you need to get a full days worth. Unfortunately for me, I smelled this on a coworker and now I don’t like to wear it as often. However, the bottle, and the smell alone with make it a perfume that will always be in my collection. I had the old formulation and after a decade, it went bad. Something turned and it smelled horrid so i bought a new one and I don’t detect any noticeable differences.

MacabreLemon

What I love about Alien is that there is always one prominent, beautiful forward scent of Jasmine, but the amber and cashmeran evolve in the background to change how it feels and keep it grounded. Rather than being boring, the streamlined fragrance pyramid makes this a clear, unapologetic jasmine at its best. For folks who like the idea of Alien but find it too brash, I recommend Michael Kors' Gorgeous.

brandiwine1980

Finally got to try it after all these years. It’s ok, but not good enough for me to buy a full bottle. I shouldn’t be surprised since people describe it as grapey. I typically don’t like any perfume that has grape notes, but Alien is better than most. Definitely unique. I don’t know if anyone has been able to copy it unless maybe Zara has accomplished that! I do think though that this is another overrated fragrance in the perfume world. Definitely not blind buy safe.

herculano

Long before i had amassed my perfume collection, back in 2007, i tried Alien, and “liked” it but not enough to buy it.

It smelled pleasing, frankly, because i love the smell of grape jolly ranchers, and to me this smelled EXACTLY like that. But its also why i didnt want to spend money on it. I felt it was a wee bit too obvious and juvenile.

But i do love jasmine… so i finally tried it again after all these years.

It evolves more than i realized it did back when i first tried it.

The “artificial sweetner” yet (what i find) musty dry down isnt great, though.

However… this is a grower. It (like many Muglers) is addictive, so i think a common experience is to not like it much at first and then find yourself being drawn back to it over and over again until you succumb to its strange charm entirely.

I am experiencing this very thing now. I can feel Alien clutching at my brain… that addictive thing is taking over.

But the newer formulations are not well projecting (not for long) or as long lasting as i require, so i definitely would only be happy with the vintage.

I will say though that even as i feel myself wanting a vintage bottle, Alien made me love Linterdit more than i have in the past.

They are very similar. Both are grape jolly rancher to the max, at first, but the gorgeous complexity of linterdit REALLY shines when you smell these two side by side. Theres no comparison, really, in terms of complexity (comparing the notes, its easy to see why)

Ropion is behind the creation of both perfumes. No suprise.

But… again… theres SOMETHING about Alien that i crave.

Pocahontas94

Парфюм для тех кто хочет выделиться ,но имеет плохой вкус

Maya lilac

I know this has been reformulated a few times since it’s first release, and I have a version from 5 year ago that’s not very close to the grandiosity of the original, but I love my Alien. The Alien I know…

For me it’s a unique, interesting, intense mix of strong jasmine, warm amber and soft cashmeran. It’s probably not as bold as exceptional as when it was released but I personally feel that even the current versions of Alien are better than most designers creations. It’s such a warm, enveloping, soapy, distinct smelling jasmine that I feel I haven’t encountered in any other perfume. Niche scents included in this comparison..

I can’t pinpoint from the top of my head a fragrance that smells similar to Alien. And while jasmine is probably the most popular/common white flower note used in perfumery nowadays, that says something. To be able to distinguish Alien in the air from all other jasmine, amber heavy scents released says a lot..

I love it as much as first time I have sampled it and I can’t see a day when I won’t want to have Alien in my collection! This is a standout scent for sure!

Iconic jasmine creation! Best jasmine ever released…

Cloverdosee

Okayyyy cyber y2k matrix baddie realness!! It’s giving Zenon vibes.. like I’ve been transported to another dimension and am smoking a joint with a purple alien.. which is stuffed with futuristic flower from a different planet and coatedddd in these little foreign alien keef crystals with an aroma that could only be described as out of this world..

Adrian1jones2

The dry down is its peak its soft sweet smooth and lovely im a sucker for its dry down it has a churchy vibe but its so lovely L’Oréal’s version is slightly more soapy and doesn’t last as long but its still an amazing perfume last a long time even the new version but its not that unique or alluring for me its not that dangerous of scent i honestly consider it a good blind buy its not that polarising like black orchid for example.

Jolands

Lovely white musk scent. For those who find Alien too much, try Daniel Josier's Le Musk. It's extermely similar, but more toned down.

Puuteri

I really love this shit. Mad jasmine. And it goes so well together with Moulin Rouge.

FlowerSeeker

A gorgeous amber floral! A little pepper. A little wood. A little spice. Good longevity. The next day it’s a soft creamy cinnamon skin scent.

latafan

Disclaimer: This review is based on a small sample which I received fairly recently, so it most likely pertains to a newer formulation. I do not know what the original formulation smells or performs like.

The first blast is crystaline sweet to quickly give way to a big heady blast of sharp brilliant jasmine which really projects around you quite a bit. The drydown maintains its clear (and loud) Jasmine accord - It keeps resonating like the sound of a huge bell - but it's on a fluffy sweet and ambery base. It lasts about 5-6 hrs on me before mellowing down to a skin scent.

It is a perfume that is very... THERE. Nothing you can wear low key eg. in the office. You intentionally wear this fragrance to make yourself known. I do think that people who are very sensitive towards fragrances might hate you for it, while others might feel it heightens your charisma. Either way, you have to be prepared to not only elicit positive reactions to wearing it. It does require a little unapologetic confidence and maybe is not the best everyday kind of scent. And a little goes a long way.

Personally, I really like it and I'm frankly a bit surprised - owning quite a few Mugler fragrances - I didn't think to try it sooner. I just like the way it snaps me into the moment of 'now and here' the second I spritz it on. I think sooner or later I might just have to add it to my collection. Strong like for now.

Anamandy

I just smelled the reform today at Ulta and it basically smells the same as the original formula. It is a little softer around the edges and not as much a beast, which is not necessarily a bad thing. The most important thing is that it still smells like Alien, and it is still a long-lasting fragrance. I certainly wouldn't have a problem purchasing what is selling today if I needed it. I still think it's a nice perfume.

vildeska

I admit that I really want to like Mugler, and this fragrance is not for everyone. It’s a heavy white floral, but it does have a unique creaminess to it. I also find it less noisy and complicated than Angel (two very different perfumes in every way, surely). Not a safe blind buy (but the bottle is beautiful!!).

Farolina

I fell in love with the idea, being a jasmine fanatic. But my opinion after blind buying a travel size 8 months ago s the same as now, it's a no for me. Moreover, the travel size doesn't come with an atomiser so I accidentally put too much.

It is not a compliment getter for anyone around you who dislikes heavy florals or loud scents and those people are common.

It is too loud, too monotone, in your face. I smell no complexity or purity and the perfume doesn't smell like any jasmine scent I had before in a bad way or even jasmine flowers around Egypt. Such a shame..

For the longevity though, it's a beast.
Never blind buy, and less is more.

Astraia

This might smell "complex" compared to other designer fragrances, but for someone used to niche fragrances - it smells safe and mainstream. This is a bold jasmine scent. It feels glamorous, borderline animalic. Suitable for someone who wants to stand out or catch attention with their fragrance choice. However, that person, and this perfume, will never be a friend of mine. I just cannot stand a loud, "notice me" fragrance. It feels migraine inducing and the jasmine notes penetrate the nose and linger for way too long even after parting with the source.

The Best perfume

Letmeregister

First of all it is extremely long lasting and silage is very strong. On my skin it smells exactly like listed notes, no surprises. Very pretty jasmine bomb. On paper it smells slightly different, the jasmine isn't as strong.

kermzie

because of its polarizing reputation i did not expect to like alien as much as i do. in fact maybe i love it? it's rare for a fragrance to "scratch an itch" for my olfactory receptors but this really does, in an addictive way. i guess it's the cashmeran. it's a shame that the bottle is so $%@!ing ugly

sabs1205

Cloying and overpowering. I couldn’t handle one spray without feeling like the jasmine, amber, and cashmeran were attacking my nose. This is a “love it or hate it” type of perfume, and not a safe blind buy.

Testing this out, I was psyched because although reformulated and not getting to experience the original, I had to at least smell this, because I love its notes. However, then way this was formulated, it gave off a burning type of smell, which made me nauseous. Again, everyone’s body chemistry is unique. I simple cannot stand this perfume.

Longevity and sillage are incredible. You only need one spray to last you the entire day. Please go test this before you buy!

confused_amoeba

It smells like a fresh jasmine garden after rain. I avoided trying this one out for so long because of the strange name and the strange bottle, but turns out, this is a beautiful floral.

Why anyone would put a beautiful, soft, feminine perfume in a darth-vader-ish bottle and name it "alien" is beyond me, but I'm getting a FB of this next. It's divine.

Schondis

This is a true Marmite of perfumes (you either love it or hate it). I wanted to like it for so many reasons, including (alleged) great sillage/longevity, a nice bottle design that's refillable, and it's not overpriced either. And I kind of liked the opening, it's strong just as promised! However, it dries down into a dirty muddy earthy scent that I just can't stand. Interesting and memorable, I just don't like it.

ayshee_x

Despite the constant hate this perfume receives, I think it’s gorgeous. Yes it’s strong and you can smell it a mile away, but that’s just proof it has excellent sillage.
It’s floral and complex. Maybe I just love jasmine fragrances but with the amber and woody notes it blends so well into an earthy and unique scent that will turn heads for sure.

loves2read

Yep, I´m loving it, I´m that simple :) With just one spray I can smell the perfume all day. When I used the perfume for the first time for work, next day, when I entered the office, I could still smell it in the room. Amazing power. So be careful, don´t overspray it.

Orchardette

This was my first “adult” perfume when I was 21 it’s nostalgic for me but I wore it during a very dark and choatic time in my life I feel trauma bonded to this scent. It lasts for hours and yes it’s alluring and sensual. I’d get compliments everytime I wore it. I might buy a small bottle again just for nostalgia sake but I won’t be making it a signature frag ever again because of the memories it brings up. It’s a great scent for those who have a bit more of an experienced nose. The jasmine can be really sharp for some, but the dry down is simply delicious, definitely test it out first.

MelissaGrego

This was highly recommended to me based on my other fragrance preferences. The name came up over and over again and the other day I went into a store to test it. When I first put it on I was hugely turned off. It hits you like a freight train and there wasn’t any notes that left me impressed. I left the store kind of surprised it was so suggested. As the day went on I kept getting hit with a much more toned down fragrance that I really started to grow into. It definitely is nice once that initial wave leaves. Anyways, literally 3 days later as I was outside speaking with someone they asked me what I was wearing because it smelled so good. I was thinking it was someone else. 😅 Smelled my jacket and yup, it must have rubbed off onto my jacket and was still going strong. This thing lasts forever and is still noticeable to those around you days later.

DariaFrancesca74

Dominant, impetuous, almost arrogant fragrance...undoubtedly a feminine fragrance, which doesn't meet my tastes but I appreciate its generous power. Thierry Mugler's olfactory line, like his fashion line, has always been characterized by hyper-feminine, irreverent and loud all-round performances. It's part of the character, it's there.

Finnis_namemy

Tested this today for the first time. Wow. At first spray, it was not at all what I was expecting and I hated it. I was very disappointed, and honestly I am surprised the scent didn’t make me feel sick. I like Jasmine but it did not smell like Jasmine to me at all. So I understand why people say it is not a good blind buy and not for everyone.
After about an hour or two, I could smell that it had developed into a less harsh, softer, fragrance, although still very sweet with strong sillage. This settled scent has kept on growing on me so I enjoy it quite a bit.
It has a really strong sillage even 6 hours after application but I cannot test the whole longevity because I have to shower now after exercising - I feel sorry for the other people in my class who could probably smell it. It is a great perfume if you want a big perfume cloud - but I do not want that at the moment because I most people I am around seem sensitive to fragrances. I feel like this could definitely give people headaches easily.
There is something I definitely like about the settled scent but I do not feel like it suits me.

SaraZigova

Extremely attention seeking perfume

webblt

i love jasmine. i love woody perfumes. i hate alien. where are we, loud grape city?

pollyjt

The jasmine scared me off for a while but after trying on my skin a few times I eventually bought a 30ml bottle. Jasmine Sambac must be OK for me because I bloody love it, so clean and white smelling. Just gorgeous. Lasts for ages. Suitable for any age group. Don't think I'll wear it in the evenings.

angel.of.eden

If you love Alien, even in current formula, please for the love of God grab a bottle while you can because L'Oreal changed packaging again. Not only the Alien symbol is not matte but Gold, but also the plastic crystal top is hollow now making it more prone to breakage.

Anniechannie

I was really looking forward to trying this one. I received a sample. I hate this scent. It's HEAVY. It is nauseating and migraine inducing. It is way too much. The jasmine is synthetic and unbearably.....close to death? I can't think of another way to describe it. Definitely not for me.

Suze58

Got hold of a CFG bottle.
Better and longer lasting than the current L’Oréal offering - and the dry down is warmer and more enveloping.
Can be worn any time, anywhere
Very comforting fragrance.
Love it.

Mrs. Dichotomous

Slutty and sexy in a kind of repulsive jet alluring way, I absolutely love it.
When someone is wearing this you will know...

Akesuts

A scent that opens in glory for 2 seconds then it becomes a nausea bomb, sour, cloying and screechy. I find it super hard to wear, and thankfully I only had a small decant. But I'd not buy a bottle

tamlou

This is one that I really wanted to love. Unfortunately, on me, it smells like gasoline….very strong and long lasting. A harsh smell that did not soften on the dry down and was difficult to wash off.
However, although this does not work for me, it does for my daughter….smells like a different perfume on her and we tested from the same bottle. This is an example of how our body chemistry affects the scent.
She loves Alien and was happy to take my bottle of it off my hands ;)

libbydee

It was a striking, amazing signature perfume. After the reformulation, it's a run of the mill, nothing to write home about, forgettable little mouse of a perfume.

LMBelvi

A no from me. White florals are always iffy for me so take that as a given but a do love a couple of them. This seemed interesting but I found it surprisingly short lived. Also not that memorable. Just a friendly middle of the road jasmine. At least I do agree with others that it is not an overpowering skunky jasmine. I will be giving away my mini though.

Mariana_1965

I can see why this fragrance appears to many people but for me personally it smells like a laundry detergent. The longevity is great though, which is a plus if you love the scent but makes it impossivle to tolerate if you feel the same way I do about it. I’d say not a safe blind buy despite the many positive comments

fragrantO

amazing jasmine perfume wrapped in 'gold'

the jasmine is realistic but not animalic or hyper realistic like narcotic venus ( the start is)
it smells similar to sun rays and holding small jasmine flowers in your hand during ramadan.
the 'gold' is likely from the amber
it ends to a wonderous woody almost oud smell with a trace of jasmine and a silk feel from the casmheran.
super unique but very easy to overspray( PLEASE DONT!!! heavy migrane inducer.)

Ljena777

This smells like replica beach walk. Both give me a headache. Glad I had only a sample of both. Just no. But this stays longer than replica, so if you’re into that, this one is way better.

sdk413

got a vintage bottle of this. it makes me smell like a hot 50 year old woman, and i cant get enough of it

Martina.I

I swear it smell like armani code on my skin, but I like it.

kafkaesquekink

literally dont know what happened here3 the past few months i was obsessed, felt this was so sexy and incredible, always spraying every time i passed her in a store. then i got her as a gift, and the fragrance in the bottle reeks like sunscreen. i don't know what happened. if this is the so-called reformulation then loreal you will rue this day. but not sure if that's even possible because the time span i feel is so short for a reformulation to take effect, and from what i can tell, the reform was a few years ago

anna222

Sooo harsh and in your face, great longevity and power…if you like it. For those who don’t though, you’re gonna need to SCRUB. It’s kinda okay at first and then it’s just still the same harshness the whole way through

jenzel4381

First of all, I love this scent! I'm surprised at how popular it is because to me, it gives me mature "grandma" vibes...but I personally like those kind of scents so I feel that's why I like it. I saw one review that said "this is what Kris Kardashian must smell like", and that made me laugh but I have to agree and that's what I think now when I smell it but again, that's not a negative in my eyes.

perfumelovere

This was a beast perfume when it was first released. It was animalic, almost grapey and super sensual. My boyfriend at the time loved this scent on me and I also received lots of compliments from others. The newer versions of all perfumes are much less concentrated and are more like an eau de cologne even though the price is still $$$. I wish I had stocked up on perfumes in the 2000's. They lasted and projected all day long.

Bibi16

Now a shadow of its formal self! what a shame. This was a MASTERPIECE! Now a watered down, extremely diluted mess

LMBelvi

I understand how some fragrance lovers favor this scent. I am happy I tried it, glad I got the sample free, as I don’t need more. It’s fairly rich and classy, though it becomes faint pretty fast.
For my preference if I was in a floral mood I’d want Totally White or Elegantly Tokyo instead.

toosimilar

Cute scent!
Sacrifice by Ajmal is a decent clone of it, but the original is more likable imo!
It's ofc more impressive, such a beautiful jasmine!
Sacrifice is in contrast more "round" and more into soft vanilla scent (IMO)

SongNSalt

More I relearn about what I like and dislike in perfumes, more I realize that it's not jasmine in general that bothers me, it's jasmine sambac specifically. It smells nauseating to me, like some sort of stale loaf of brown bread, gotten wet and forgotten on a grease stained piece of cardboard. It is omnipresent in today's creations and really ruins many perfumes that I would otherwise like or love, like "Alien" here.
It's a shame really, I think that without it this frangrance would be one of my favorites. As it is, I can compromise with an "ok" and hope for a future reformulation without the dreaded sambac note.

Leolia

Masterpiece.
I swoon when i smell it in the air.

vpace91

When I first tried my sample of this I swear it smelled like bugspray, just horrible. A few weeks later I tried it again and it's improved a lot. Now it smells like the visitors center at the local state park near where I grew up in the appalachians. Kind of an earthy, musty, vaguely floral smell, in a log cabin type building that was probably 100 years old. I used to feel safe and happy there. So it's weirdly comforting. But still not something I would want to buy a full bottle of. Maybe a travel spray though :)

saho93

This has a definite blast of jasmine in the opening, which I like. Then I get a bit of green, grassiness in the background.

I think this is best smelled a little bit from a distance because I like the jasmine to dominate and not get grassiness.

It is an unusual, interesting scent; it stands out.

You know there is a power of being basic, right? This is mallable, versatile. Projected very well and since the jasmine is not offensive it received well by the people around me. I can wear it to the office, to my sunday brunch, to cocktail party, even when I run half marathon, it sits well. Not to mention the price point per ml is so worth it since it survive more than 6 hours outdoor! I already on my second bottle and will keep it on my roster. Please never discontinue this, mugler!

Ralison71

I like jasmine and was optimistic this would be a good floral not too fruity or sweet perfume for me. But both my husband and son said it was 'generic'. They could tell I was wearing perfume, but wouldn't go so far as to say I smelled 'good'. So a miss for me. I will try layering.

clnyc

Very unique scent for only 3 notes. Anyone who wears this, I know it's Alien. I remember when this perfume first came out and I loved it. Recently, I smelled it at the gym and couldn't stop thinking about it so I bought a set with the bottle, lotion and mini spray. I've read that it's gone through reformulations but after years, it still has its signature scent overall. I don't think this suits everyone but lovely for those that it does suit. Sillage is powerful and long lasting

nfox

So pure and simple. Like zen art. It is clean but deep, woody, with pure white flowers. Very natural smelling, it wouldn't be disturbing even in a forest.

I actually envision it in a dark, mossy, misty forest.
As the fragrance of an enchanting being, like a fairy or a dryad. It is so beautiful!

There is a clean sharpness to this scent, something that I haven't come across in other perfumes. It reminds me of music, of hitting the perfect note at the perfect time.

jadepo21

I don't know how such simple notes come together to create such an odd and alluring fragrance. You know Alien the second you smell it. It is just in a category all its own. Now, can I see why some don't like it? Yes, cause she is a bomb. She is loud, she is proud, and she makes a statement. But it's such a deep, seductive, and unique statement. Certainly not for everyone, but I simply adore it!

M1tsouko

I came across Alien in an ulta when I was 12 years old.. It's been years and I still LOVE this perfume! I honestly have loved how it's smelled on me and how refined and complex it is, but yet the notes are so simple. Before I actually thought to buy a full-sized bottle of Alien because I didn't wanna spend full price, I ended up finding a 2011 formulation (109301) off of eBay, taking the risk. However, everything seemed super authentic. Anyway, enough rambling about this, here's my overall opinion on Alien's PRE-LOREAL FORMULATION!!

When I saw the perfume was delivered, I got my ass to the mailbox and sprayed it. One spray of this ambery liquid evoked the same familiar smell of jasmine woody goodness, and as it filled my lungs I thought to myself 'This is the smell of my dreams'. But what surprised me more was how well it stayed on my skin. It was almost like it latched onto my skin. This one spray lasted over 7 hours on my skin... I'm not even mad either LOL, I mean why would I be? I smelled amazing! Get yourself an old bottle of Alien, you will not regret it! I believe the problem with the newer reformulations is that they do not have this long-lasting power compared to the older ones, but the projection does exist.

Sal1203

God!! I m in love with this.
I don’t have the original version of alien so I can’t comment on how that one smelt. But the newer version of alien that I have is absolutely stunning.
It’s mesmerising.
Imo the jasmine is so luxurious.
Initially I thought that the jasmine would be too much for me but it’s so well blended.
A lot of people find this to be a granny scent, but to me this is a bold sexy ultra feminine smell.
I could see this on a boss lady.
I m in my early 20s but I adore this.

So if u love white florals and daring, then go ahead with this. It was a blind buy, but boy am I surprised.
I would always suggest though to smell it first or get a sample, since it’s very polarising.

Lasting- 7-8 hours (after 5-6 hrs it becomes a skin scent though)
Projection- 1-1.5 meters (initial few hours)
Overall- 10/10 for me

natalka999

This is my most worn parfum since i was 18 and its also the most long lasting thing that i own. Smells so misterious and original. One and only DNA ...Unfortunately the reformulation did ruin the original sent a little bit.. it smells a little different now less sirupy and less thick and memorable.

Grenouille's_cave

I had to buy a small bottle out of curiosity after seeing it referenced so many times. I think what’s going on here is that this is the only deliberate scent that will have survived any longer nights out my whole adult life and it feels like a mixed blessing to now have this magic portal.

evavidal62

If you buy this blindly as I did, you're in for a shock in a good way. I had never really experienced an animalic fragrance before until I first smelled Alien. This is a musk atom bomb to me. I was unable to understand what I was smelling and it was hard to scrub off. It is not a bad smell but its certainly quite a different scent compared to today's fragrances. The initial note comes through like the color of the bottle - purple. It's like some deep dark purple vortex that sucks you in. Something out of this world about it hence the name alien. There is a jasmine deep in there but it's a soft jasmine with some green nuances and jasmine bush effect. There's patchouli and wood notes. Amber. Incense. But most of all musk. I think this may also have an artificial lab formulated 'civet' note. This is a very unique aroma and not to everyone's tastes. Also coming off as very Middle Eastern fragrance. It has a little bit of everything but in a condensed and precise way. Florals? Jasmine. Check. Sandalwood? Check. Amber? Check. At the opening it has even to my nose what felt like grape or currant or berry but it may just be my nose playing tricks or something my own personal experience with it produced. Every one experiences something different with the same perfume. But it is a very grand 'indie' type scent that is astoundingly smoky and woodsy, unisex, dirty in a good way, and sexy. The scent is long lasting and projects like a missile. Exotic and mysterious. It's quite strong and meant to be worn by a confident man or woman. It's unisex. It's warm and definitely a fall and winter scent for the colder seasons and weather. I love to put it on a little bit once a year in the winter. It's good for wearing with a fur coat. It's good for evening dinner dates. It will immediately grab people's attentions toward you. It is sexy but only if you spray a little because too much is going to cause nose gagging. If your body can handle animalic musk scents, Oriental fragrances, jasmine and wood, this is not going to be a problem. It is absolutely amazing. Highly recommended for mature audiences only!

staschhha

I saw this perfume at the local dm store, sprayed it on myself out of curiosity and thought "what the f just happened". It was very confusing at the moment. It was too strong and somehow... sweet?
After some time, when I got home, the perfume was still there on my skin and I was mesmerised!!! It was so so so good! I like strong and floral perfumes, but usually those two don't go in the same package. Mugler Alien was a great mix!
It's feminine, unique, a bit suffocating (which I like, personally), perfect for nightouts and occasions when you want to be remembered. I get compliments whenever I wear it, so many girls wanted to know "what smells SO GOOD".

This is the only perfume that had me from "wtf" to "I adore it". It's the smell you need to give a chance, like you need to let it seduce you. The perfume you want to wear when you want to feel good about yourself.

Cannot wait to buy another bottle!

P.S. Even though I want to wear it everyday, maybe it's too strong for work days - but I've found a solution: the dupe for Mugler Alien - less strong and a cheaper version of it - AJMAL Sacrifice.

silvertealight

i do not like this...it smells medicinal and ARTIFICIAL like bug spray!! it’s giving car air-freshener vibes (when you buy a new car and smell that sickening plastic mixed with air freshener and have travel sickness when taking it out for a ride the first time) it gave me an intense headache! i really do not understand the hype.. i love mugler, but there are better, fresher smelling jasmine fragrances… imo angel elixir is the younger, fresher jasmine sister which is 10000000% better than this juice! the jasmine in this smells extremely synthetic :(

archery_mayhem

I'm not a fragrance expert and never will be if I can be honest, but this is one of the best perfumes I've tried so far. It's become a personal favorite and quite the comfort perfume - I used to have the smaller bottle of this and just recently I bought the larger and I am so happy! (I will eat this perfume. It's amazing)

Amethyst3

Definitely a statement scent not for the faint hearted ! Possibly the longest lasting scent I have ever smelled on a woman . It projects for miles and miles and has a strong identity . It suits the name - it’s familiar yet strange at the same time . And has a touch of modernity to it . I find it funny how few scent notes this has in comparison to angel ! Like polar opposites , yet to me angel smells simpler .

GreatNorth

This is sexy, warm, feminine scent that is skin-like from the cashmere. It smells unique and a little off-kilter yet is still distinctly feminine.

Catherine_Smells

This is a fragrance the majority of people will be able to recognise, whether you’re into fragrance or not. That’s because there is no escaping the overpowering floral bomb, and the suffocating synthetic cashmeran note. It genuinely is like someone is trying to knock you out but instead of chloroform on a cloth, they use this instead.

This fragrance is so powerful it obviously causes some sort of damage to the wearers olfactory senses, as they go nose blind and overspray, causing many of us innocent bystanders to suffer from the effects which include (but are not limited to), nausea, headaches, blurry vision, vertigo and migraines.

But in all seriousness, I can appreciate the iconic Alien fragrance on others if they spray a normal amount (1-2 sprays max) - I’m begging you!

locustplague

I blind bought this because I was nearly positive I would love it, but I wound up disappointed. It does have a nice depth to it, but the floral notes are too sharp for me. It gave me an awful headache, and even hours later my uber driver asked to open the window because she found the smell suffocating.

smrdljivac

so floral it's almost overwhelming. everyone is describing it as unique and sensual, so i was expecting to like it but it felt outdated and almost boring to me, though definitely sophisticated. the dry down is a little bit warmer. it reminds me of a rich aunty's leather couch, in a good way. definitely not for me though.

Miss boudoir

I think that vintage alien by thierry mugler and vintage extrait of l'instant by guerlain go very well together. An Amazing combination 😍😍

Sophiè de l'Orient

My perception of this perfume evokes a fantasy of a parallel world, somewhere in space, where an alien girl crashes flowers in a mortar made of galactic stones. Her mysterious alchemies lead her to land on Earth - she is a strangely beautiful cyborg that is unusual but twice as honest.

This perfume is the living proof that crisp, cold beauty can consume you too, it's the kind of beauty that pains you to admit its allure and its impactfullness.

It pierces deeply into you once you are open enough to understand it; It crashes the earth like a comet at first, but soon you'll know it was a gift from outter space.

taintedkitten

I love this scent. I bought it blindly, and super glad I did. It's my go to to wear and it seems to last for a very long time, I can still smell it next day. I bought it about four years ago, I'm really hoping it hasn't changed like others are saying...

libbydee

I recently bought another bottle and I'm so disappointed. This new bottle smells only faintly like the previous one. No longevity, no intensity. Why why why did they have to go and butcher it.

CrissyCK

Got a sample years ago and found it very cloying and just yuck. Then as time passed and I would smell it on me, and on my laundry, it became oddly addicting. So much so I went right out and purchased it. This is the only mugler fragrance I like, and I’ve given them all a chance. I haven’t worn it in a while but sprayed it recently and my husband asked me what it was, and loved it. I’ve moved on to other fragrances but it’s a gem I will keep in my collection for date night. This can also be worn casually as well. It’s a bit heavy so probably better suited for cold weather.

Very sad to hear about a reformulation. Looks like I’m going to have to go stock up on the old stuff!

Anajasp

When this came out nearly 20 years ago, I hated it. But since then my tastes have evolved, as we all do in so many areas of life, and although I didn't buy it yet, I think I will because when I try the samples I have, I just feel lovely in it.

Leeenas

This smells very balsamic to me. I actually love to wear this to bed, because something about it smells so deep and comforting to me

Madyana

I still have another full bottle of old Alien in my cupboard, but my curiosity led me to the new format now in 2023.... Well, I don't understand what the hell people are talking about, weak? soapy?... Time in space is probably warped, but to my nose Alien has not suffered from evolution, at least not to worry about. To me current Alien is still the same powerful (of all the scents I've tried, only Alien stood out on my clothes the next day) unique, mysterious and sexy fantasy scent that it has been since its first release. My old bottles, with their metal hooks, are certainly more impressive, but the scent of the innermost, purple heart is my Alien. 💜

mariababy

I want to love this so badly. Everyone is calling it unique and different, dark and mysterious which is right up my alley but honestly it just smells so generic to me?

Anastuki

My first real LOVE, I have been using it since I was a teenager, for 15+ years now, it's the perfume that most people relate me with. 100% head turner and unforgettable. There is nothing like it, never smelled something like this or ever will again. I have 2 bottles before reformulation and I am keeping them like treasure. Thank God 2 sprays are enough to smell for 24 hours.

Be aware, Alien chooses you, you don't choose it! It needs to be compatible with your skin. My mother loves it on me but smells horrible on her. Not for everyone.

Can't believe this consists only of 3 notes, it's one of the most complex smells. I am more of a gourmand girl now but I will always love Alien. ❤️❤️❤️

carrico1986

I finally got my hands on the infamous "alien" perfume. It turned out smelling exactly as I assumed it would; like a beautiful, feminine jasmine... Nothing unique or alien-like here, just a beautiful, floral fragrance. I'm a jasmine lover, so I knew I would enjoy this one! It's crazy how powerful marketing is! Imagine if it were named something else like; jasmine bloom, midnight jasmine, exotic jasmine, etc, etc.... would people still think it smells strange and unique? It fascinates me what a name can invoke :)

Missjojoh

I have a love/hate relationship with Alien. I really dont like it on first spray, but when the initial 'blast' has worn off, the dry down is to die for!!
Dont dismiss it on first spray, let it settle on your skin before you judge it 😊
A little goes a very long way, Super long lasting too!

08310831

If it suits your skin, it's pure magic but if it doesn't, it smells like insect repellent. Don't overspray even if it suits you perfectly.

J.24

Omg I have a layering duo for you guys. I have so many compliments today wearing this perfume from random people.

Bath & bodywork cream Snowflake & cashmere

Alien 2 spray is more than enough

Cheirosa '40 Sol de Janeiro Body mist and hair perfume put it in your hair and on you (obviously it’s a body mist so the longevity is not that great)

Trust me I was outside and at least 5 people tell me I smell goood, refreshing and I got compliments from men’s and women’s. Layering combo only for winter.

Thank me later and give it a try

chancesdaydream

my only knowledge of this perfume before i bought it was that a lot of people really hated it. im happy to say i am not one of those people! i just purchased it today and i am IN LOVE 🥰 it is such a unique floral which i love and it is loud af. i want people to smell me 10 feet away and when my dad saw me today the first thing he said was he could smell my new perfume. lasts forever and is literally my <333333 10/10 love this perfume omgggg

IVamp

I got a bottle of this as a gift. Not exactly one of my favorites but I appreciated it and enjoyed slowly using the whole bottle in time. I wouldn't buy it though. I just can't call it floral, definitely not white floral, to me it's much more ambery and spicy, there is something masculine and aggressive about it. I love jasmine but in this one it's a bit too loud and sharp. I can see why this perfume is iconic, it definitely is unique and outstanding, I have loved it many times on other women but not that much on myself. Excellent quality, sillage, and longevity.

Dominatoarea

I LOVE IT

MissBear

Maybe it’s my chemistry but it smells like Avon Far and Away on me.

Astrum.Obtutus

My introduction to scents, for the love of fragrance, the start of everything... It evokes everything, every feeling in me. Dark, mysterious, cold, seductive, mesmerizing.

scachomba

Muito forte. Abre com um cheiro forte de álcool (pelo menos o meu foi assim). Depois de uns 20 minutos, comecei a sentir a essência do perfume e é bem forte.
Gostei dele mas não achei nada "wow"

TerceraMolar

I would have loved to try the old formulation, I can imagine that it was more powerful, this new formula, despite suffering at the hands of L'Oreal, is very powerful, on my skin it lasts more than 10 hours, so I can imagine that the other one is a beast, it's beautiful, a lot of jasmine, white amber, this is a masterpiece, the name suits it👽, it's out of this world, I can understand why this is very polarizing, it's not a fragrance for everyone, try it first, don't blind buy folks! this I will have it forever in my collection. One of my favs✨ wow

Wore the L’Oréal version to work…got asked if I was wearing Avon. Found a pre reform bottle (thank the lawd) and now get tracked down to be asked what I’m wearing, or people know EXACTLY what I have on and love it lol!! Find a CFG bottle or older, because it’s worth it!!!!!

giri-boni

Killed by reformulation :(

EmmaMartha

I smelt this for the first time 2 weeks ago, I now own the largest size bottle.

When you first spray it it’s very sharp and floral, once it dries down you really can smell the depth of the fragrance. It’s clean but elegant, almost 10 hours in and I can still smell it.

I find many perfumes rely heavily on vanilla to carry the scent but alien manages to do so with no vanilla scent. It’s not sweet nor too woody it’s just the perfect balance.

My husband is very sensitive to smells and he is fine with it which is a plus.

tanaC

Alien (store test)

Non-describe white floral in menthol amber, mildly sweeten.

Can see this as backbone of other scent like
Rogue Marachite, Supreme Bouquet or Atlas Garden.

Perfect of 30+ femme, strong an beautiful.
Classy.
8/10

Dry down, animalic amber with floral nuance, it is ok sometimes scent reminds me of mothball.
7/10

nataliabaraonda

Dark jammy jasmine on me and I love it

Vanilljmaniac

I had been longing to try this.
As soon as the sample arrived yesterday, and sprayed with excitement.

Wow, this smelled exactly like what I smelled at the gorgeous and historical tea hut i Jiufeng, Taiwan.
It was a family trip and we enjoyed a nice tea with jasmine flavour.

That also smelled like jasmine tea flavoured toothpaste which I got as hotel amenity at the hotel I enjoyed staying with my mom in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. We really loved this toothpaste. hehe

I haven't imagined I would have encountered sweet memories with my family.
(I expected super sexy jasmine bomb scent before I get this sample)

That *memories in Asia* scent went back to Asia in an hour on my wrist and came with sweet amber-ish scent.
I love the combination of jasmine tea and this sweet amber like scent. I felt gorgeous, sensual, feminine, and relaxing vibe.

On my wrist, it lasted for 3 hours or so.
I thought it would hold more (this sample was a bit aged?), but this fragrance reminded me of sweet memories with my family living far far away (oh I miss my family so much now). I didn't expect to feel this scent in Europe at all.

It was such a happy and sweet encounter, and as a jasmine flavour/scent and tea lover, I would definitely like to get full bottle asap.

Midnight Fantasy

Classy in a bottle 💞

AimeeMarie

I owned an older bottle of this scent and absolutely loved it. It certainly can come off rather strong, especially if you're inadvertently a bit heavy-handed as it does last quite a while. I remember it as a wonderful scent I absolutely loved and one that really got me into perfumes.

On me, the amber really came through more so than any of the other notes and is what always lasted the longest of the notes, which makes sense given it's the base note.

notyourprincess

I’m still trying to understand this perfume, giving it a second chance, but as for me, it’s too much. Too much smell and I can’t recognize jasmine here, maybe it’s too synthetic and sweet.

spicetiger

Has a wet, sour note in it that's unappealing, like faintly wet dog. I wanted to like this, but couldn't.

fernlover

AWFUL!!! jasmine is too strong and after 20 minutes of wearing i want to wash it away but i can't if I'm outside, so I'm just left to suffocate with this perfume sitting on my clothes. this jasmine note is good, i would even call it pleasant, but be prepared to smell it even after washing your clothes. because of how strong it is you will enjoy it for the first 2-3 minutes, but it will give you nausea right after that time. i literally wanted to throw up after 5 minutes.
not even kidding, this perfume gave me jasmine-PTSD, now i escape any perfume with jasmine in it, even though i liked it before.

unless you're big jasmine fan, DO NOT buy it expecting a light scent. this is definitely not for a everyday-wear.

unicajiha_01

I can smell Disney World Pandora ride on this one. It smells like water and leaves.
I bought a small bottle, smell is unique and refreshing. It doesn't stay long on my skin. It's somethin new to me coz most of my perfumes are with vanilla.

Misskay754

All I can say is I am soo glad I didn’t blind buy this!

I bought a 1ml sample for £3 and from the reviews I totally expected to LOVE this. Afterall, I love powerhouse perfumes.

Well, this may be a powerhouse, but it smells nauseating. I actually felt like I was going to throw up after smelling it on my wrist after spraying it.

I then went and attempted to scrub my wrist with soap and water and I can STILL smell it. I have sprayed Jadore on my wrist to mask the smell and somehow it has seeped through Jadore and I can STILL smell Alien, even more the Jadore. How is that possible?

Word of advice: Do NOT blind buy!

Caramel lady

I enjoy Alien, it pulls soapy on me, I can’t detect spice at all.

To my nose it’s a clean and fresh smelling perfume.
Good for every day wear, a very easy reach for a minimalist like me who doesn’t want perfume cluttering their space, a curated perfume collection where it’s at. Every bottle has its place in my life - intentional.

Where does alien sit?
She was my work perfume.
Why?
1. She’s way too basic/popular to use on special occasions, dates etc I don’t mind smelling basic at work and she is good for that.
2. She’s strong and long lasting.
3. She’s not too expensive so repurchasing is doable (especially for an over-sprayer like me).

Not a “I’ve got to have it in my collection at all times” but definitely “I’ll grab a new bottle if I feel like it”.

emmiedessureault

I own an older bottle.
I always loved this. I adore jasmine. It is overwhelming. I am someone who never spray more than one spray (of any EDP or EDT). One spray of Alien is a lot.
You need to love jasmine to like it.

Miss boudoir

One perfume comes to my mind, as vintage alien by thierry mugler reaches a slow beautiful drydown, almost like a slow burlesque dance. This perfume is vintage poeme by lancome from the 90s. Amazing! ❤️

swagron1111

I have a sample size that I bought a few weeks ago. At first I didn't like it, it had a strange smell that I couldn't place. As I started wearing it more, I started to like it. Then my brother told me I smelled like the mall on Black Friday. Not sure if I think that's a good thing or a bad thing...

lilacxlily

Honestly, when I first smelled this it reminded me so much of a lilac bush. I bought a small bottle for when I want to evoke the months of May and June, before it gets too hot outside. Another review states that this smells like a forest nymph and I would agree. It smells like greenery, but not in a sharp way. Almost like if you picked a flower and smelled the stem. I don't really pick up on much amber, though just a hint comes through after dry down and letting it sit for a while on the skin. It's not quite sexy in the traditional sense, but rather it's sexy because it is unusual. I find it fairly unisex. I do think it is missing something, which is probably why so many people complain about the reformulation. I wish it had a little more depth.

mekanazekana

I received sample and wear it for a few days. It is sweet and strong, but it can be very powerful if you spray it too much on you, and it is long lasting. Personally it is not my cup of tea, since its too sweet and strong, and it lack something refreshing in the scent, but its ok when I put 1-2 spray on. It is nice and good perfume.

melissa97

There can't be only jasmine in this perfume. It gives the feeling of having more than one white flower. I didn't like amber, but this perfume changed my mind. I really liked this perfume. Floral and feminine. I wouldn't call it sexy, but it makes me feel like a woman who knows what she wants.

Rosiewebber

I mean. It’s iconic for a reason. Creamy jasmine and white florals, amber and spicy cashmeran, addictively feminine. I feel ridiculous saying this as a 30yo with kids and a mortgage whose most definitely an adult, but this makes me feel like a woman. I want to say it’s mature, but I think that offers the wrong image, I know some use that word to describe scents they feel are “old lady” scents, but there’s nothing vintage about this. It’s confident.

Setaurus

Jasmine jasmine everywhere!
Little wonder this so polarising. The notes are a very strong floral with a musky base. The smell makes me think of a no-nonsense female CEO.

Do not blind buy as it's not for everyone.

tanny_ups

This is a great perfume. However, as I bought the reformulated version, I relate to all the stories that it’s not long lasting and it does not project as it should. It smells divine and it’s very complimented but it fades in 3-4 hours and it becomes a skin scent that last 2 more hours. I still like it, I think it’s a must for perfume collectors

Charlottesumxs

I can't even identify what it is I love about Alien, it just smells divine to me. It's a bit of an obvious clue that I generally enjoy white floral, jasmine, amber, and woods, but there's something quite magical in this particular fragrance. The first time I sprayed it on my skin (I did go overboard because I'm used to perfumes just disappearing in under ten minutes) I knew I'd found my scent. I force myself to alternate with others so I can keep enjoying fragrance as a hobby, but coming back to Alien feels like coming home.

OlfactoryAmbiance

I have purchased so many bottles of Alien it's comical and was gifted quite a few (thanks to a job in department store buying office). I love(d) this scent. It's the closest thing to dethroning my beloved Nirvana Black as my signature. I wear this constantly... to work, to go out with the girls, date night.. I love it. It's a rich, weighty jasmine with syrupy amber on a bed of soft fuzzy cashmere. It lasts forever on my skin. I live in a very temperate climate so there isn't much seasonal change so I can wear this all year round. I did wear this on a trip to Chicago in the middle of summer and I LOVED it. It came alive on my skin in the heat. I got stopped on the street numerous times by strangers, at dinners (the waiter, the hosts) and the towncar driver we had. I'm savoring this last bottle (from 2018) that I have since I went and sniffed a bottle at Sephora... and that is not my beloved Alien. I didn't snap a picture of the batch code on the bottom of the bottle so I'm really hoping a reformulation hasn't ruined it. The bottle I sniffed smelled like cheap soap and wool. I'm going to pick up a travel size and see if I just had a bad sniff.

brightsun2205

That’s the fragrance that fierce boss ladies and femme fatales would wear.

Aquapinkmoon

Why reformulate, and ruin such an iconic unique fragrance?? This was my signature staple for the past 3 years, I’ve gone through so many bottles of Alien because I just LOVE it the scent demands attention, is super sexy, mysterious, dark. It’s dark feminine in a bottle, got me compliments every single day and was absolutely beast mode. Like, you don’t know beast mode until you’ve tried the original alien. Unfortunately i wasn’t informed about the reformulation the last time I went to get a new bottle of alien and didn’t understand why it wasn’t doing it for me anymore, the lasting power sucks, the scent lacks depth, now I know why:( I won’t be repurchasing again, just a big company giving less and charging more. The quality is just not the same but the price definitely is, not sorry for the rant because it’s seriously frustrating that companies continue to take perfect fragrances that people love and adore and cheapen them, and then continue to charge full price and more. So disappointing.

lszwed

This warm, ambery jasmine is one of my favorites in a microgenre of fragrances I have declared the "Slutty Y2K It Girl" scents. If you were as lucky as me, you were raised by a group of worldly older cousins that introduced you to all the vampy, whorish perfumes, underwear, makeup, and clothes that had their mothers grieving over their innocence. She drank vodka out of a water bottle at garage parties in 2009 and couldn't resist the temptation of a cigarette after she's had just enough. She owned 20 different pairs of yoga pants with a 6-inch waistband and "PINK" inscripted on the back. She watched Pretty Little Liars and Gossip Girl and posted selfies with her lips scrunched to one side to her MySpace at least once a day. She teased her hair until she was 2 inches taller. Her middle name is Elizabeth and had a new boyfriend every time you saw her. She barely passed high school, and then became a hairdresser, specializing in men's cuts. Other scents in her collection include Pink Sugar and Love Spell, and you think of her whenever you catch a whiff of them on an unsuspecting stranger.

massimilianoinquieto

This smells like a nymph with white long hair, green eyes and brown skin who wanders around a foggy forest. She's shy yet mischievous and spies on you through the trees. Every time you catch her looking, she hides and giggles. She's trying to lure you into her den.

This is a very "mysterious" smelling fragrance. Usually, mysterious scents are "dark", like Black Opium. But this one isn't... I wouldn't necessarily call it light either... maybe like a "grey" mysterious. It's ethereal, other worldly and hypnotizing.

jdb_

Alien is a very pretty fragrance. I do really appreciate the type of Jasmine used here— and she remains the star. I’m only referring to the current formulation btw but there is something missing for me in this scent. It lacks some dimension. Is this really polarizing?? If so, people need to calm down and live a little. It smells more like a luxury hand soap than a Mugler perfume to me. I would say it leans slightly mature, feminine, and classy. Not so much a sexy head turning date night fragrance, but pleasant no doubt.

Juels

I love it and that's why it is my signature fragrance. Mysterious and sexy, it gives me confidence. On my skin is lasting for more than 6h and has good projection.

MTK82

I love jasmine notes and Amber but I didn't like this perfume initially...it sat on my dresser for a few months...also because it was a gift from someone I never liked lol! I stared wearing it on and off gradually and grew to like it. Definitely haven't smelled anything similar to it.

Miss boudoir

The vintage version, I love it in small doses... It can be overwhelming if over sprayed. It is a purple olfactory masterpiece.

rene.saller

After years of being informed by Fragrantica's AI bots that Alien was one of the top choices for the "people who like this also like that field"--and every time I use Perfume finder to look for similar perfumes to something I don't have or can't get for the right price, Alien pops up in the first or second row, without fail. I know that it is a hugely popular perfume that is also polarizing, and it does smell remarkably like the Oil Perfumery dupe that I have. The jasmine is beyond dominant--it's REGNANT!--and it's not quite photorealistic, even though it's definitely more indolic than clean and shrieky. I could see how it might become overpowering, especially in close quarters, in a warm climate. But I still think (hope?) that it can be worn in an inviting rather than aggressive manner. I love it, but I will probably never need another bottle for the duration of my life because I got a great deal on 3 ounces, and, in the event that I do run out (when I'm 150 years old, perhaps, on another planet or in some sad subterranean postapocalyptic cavern), the insanely gorgeous and not exactly practical vessel (talisman? they have some funny word for it, and in French I believe it's rock or stone), which reminds me of an orchid blossom, an alien spaceship, and a highly stylized human vulva at the same time, is allegedly refillable. Presumably the Mugler counters have a little fountain and you can fill 'er on up when she's empty. What a strange scent to have such mass appeal! Once again I am forced to accept the fact that I am quite likely a basic bitch. Oh well! At least I have my freaky little purple rock full of polarizing juice to console me!

electric_evelyn

I've been on and off this scent for about 3 years now. I appreciated it at first, but now...it's just a fabric conditioner kind of scent that sometimes chokes you and others around. 🤔 I still have the eau de toilette version to debate keeping - as it feels less cloying and rather better for everyday/work.

In the end, it's all a matter of personal taste. Sometimes I smell Alien on other women and it's just wow and narcotic. Other times, I smelled it and was like: "oh no, not Alien again!" But when I put it on, it's not long before I want to get it off.

I suggest you try both versions. I found the EDT to last forever, whereas EDP barely made the 8 hour mark.

ulianazajcenko

Bought it when needed to feel like I'm worth it. It did its job.

It does make you feel special. Owning it feels good. Not to mention, I love Jasmine.

It is warmer, good for colder weather. I wore in spring, was great.

PorcelainDolly2003

Very interesting smell, I would say it's very herbal and the jasmine comes out a lot too. Very long lasting as well wich is always a plus and not too strong. Does smell like an alien in a way

Amber&Oud

alleged notes:
cardamom, jasmine sambac
cumin, orange blossom, cashmere, heliotrope, white amber

what i smell:
Spice, this was my first perfume i bought to wear to work, so it always reminds me of working in finance lol

scent event / my reaction:
creative professional lives a life in luxury, lunching and laughing with coworkers, the impending change of the pandemic on the horizon

fefefex

I wanted to like this so badly because I love Mugler, but I cannot. This is a very thin, sparkling amber. It makes the air feel thin and difficult to breathe - a very odd experience. I appreciate how this quality evokes the name, Alien. I am a lifelong amber lover, but I like thick, resinous amber or spicy, enchanting amber. This is not that at all. It is incredibly synthetic and sterile and sort of extra-terrestrial in that way. The scent seemed vaguely familiar, but I could not put my finger on it until someone said it smelled like bathroom cleaner. Now this is all I can think of when I smell it. I am not even sure what brand of bathroom cleaner, but it smells like when the janitor has just finished cleaning the public restroom and you are allowed to re-enter. There is even the faintest smell of dirty diapers in the background covered up by synthetic amber. I am not sure if that is really there or just by association now.

alessiatommasone

I literally just received a sample for this, and let me just say, WOW. usually I dislike any sort of perfume lacking a vanilla note, as a big vanilla fan myself. but this exceeded my expectations. on my skin this smells incredibly seductive and smoky. I can smell a lot of the amber and jasmine on my skin. however I think I would prefer the other alien perfume, with vanilla in it. this is definitely a must buy for any floral, woody smell fan.

aflakes

Back in 2021, I did not appreciate this scent nor did I like it on me. Fast forward to present day, I decided to give it another sniff because I wanted to add to my Mugler collection, and I love it now! Once I bought it, I started watching reviews, and most Alien lovers kept speaking of the old formulation. Although I really enjoyed the reformulation, curiosity got the best of me, so I ended up ordering a 0.2 fl oz bottle of the old Mugler from Mercari, and now I want to cry....the old formulation is just wow. Now I understand why people were pissed. It is richer, deeper, and definitely makes a bold statement whereas the new formulation is watered down. It sucks because I can't get a big bottle of the old formulation for a reasonable price. In the meantime, I'll savor every drop I have in my mini bottle.

batuhanavci

I don't like the latest formulation at all! L'Oreal has truly damaged what once was an icon of a fragrance. The Thierry Mugler formulation when the brand was owned by Clarins is the Alien that I know and love. It's is rich, bold, and glamorous. The jasmine is quite indolic and wrapped around a thick blanket of warm cashmeran and golden amber. Thank god I have 4 back up bottles of the Thierry Mugler formulation which I'll cherish dearly for the rest of my life.

Hesssa21

This fragrance is very much nostalgic. Very heavy on the jasmine so if you don't enjoy jasmine in a perfume I would pass on this one. I get the amber and cashmere also although the jasmine definitely dominates this fragrance.

It's a bit of a unique fragrance but I wouldn't say it peculiar or difficult to wear. It's just a very 90s vibe to me and differs from what you'd smell on most women today. Despite the opinions of other people in the reviews, I don't view this to be a unisex scent at all. Obviously, wear what you like but if you're a man who tends to enjoy much more of a masculine scent, alien wouldn't quite do it for you.

Overall I'd say the longevity and projection is really good. You could definitely leave a scent trail with this one.

Mycoleman2800

This is so beautiful!! It smells amazing with my body chemistry. It's one of my favorites and I will never forget I bought it the day we found out Whitney Houston died 💔. I agree with a comment below, I do smell grape juice now that you mention it lol! I spray it sparingly because it's become kind of expensive and hard to find. But it will always remain a love for me. The smell is something that I can't really describe and something I never smelled anywhere else. It's definitely unique, which is a good thing.

Leather&pearls

This reminds me of grape juice, mixed with a hint of cat piss and woody notes. The grape juice isn’t bad, unfortunately on my skin more of the woody notes with cat piss came out. I wanted to love this SO bad because I love polarizing beast mode perfumes, but this eventually turned into a no for me. I bought both the new and old formulas. The new formulation has a lot of soapiness that I’m also not too fond of.

elina_molin

I taste licorice when I spray this and violet candy. A hint of tar? Jasmine is there but also orange flower. The top notes are heady and a bit too much for me. But it surely makes an inprint in my mind.

elleayjay

I’m not really sure how to feel about this one. When I first sprayed it, all I got was a very strong jasmine note, dare I say a little too strong, and kind of sour smelling. And that’s saying something for me personally because I prefer strong perfumes, but it was almost headache inducing. But as the day went on and the perfume went through its stages, it got more bearable and somewhat enjoyable, took a few hours to get there for me though. And even through the following day I could still smell it on my skin. So longevity is insane. But the scent itself is very strange, which is on brand for the name Alien. I cannot decide whether I love or hate it. I wish the initial spray wasn’t a jasmine bomb. I also wish i could smell anything other than jasmine but that’s where this fragrance begins and ends for me. I think I’d live if I never have this in my collection but it’s not the worst perfume. Alien goddess on the other hand is a masterpiece, Alien goddess intense is even better!

Billy K.

It's a masterpiece, this is the female version of ted lapidus altamir, reminds me of sergio tacchini club for her which is similar to armani code cashmere

Bregondo

As a guy, I find this fragrance very weird smelling, the first time I took a sniff of it, I recoiled and thought to myself "what the heck?" It fits the name alright. It smells pretty unisex too, I can see a guy wearing this one. I'd wear it probably around friends at a night out. I like it. It's unique and will definitely catch people's attention.

ingenpen

I used to love it, now I find it overwhelming (I have older formulation). I still think this is a masterful fragrance, but I'm not able to wear it any longer, as it makes me nauseous... :( Now I understand what my sister always told me - that she feels sick when I wear it, and now I feel it too and I'm sad about it.

For the time I could wear it, the rating is 9/10.

Now the rating would be 5/10 because I just cannot forgive the fact it is unwearable for me now. :(

I still appreciate it very much and think it is one of the most memorable, powerful, beautiful scents in the designer world and I will always remember it that way.

Dreamerdreamer

I remember in 2014 when I tried this perfume on my wrist for the first time at a department store. At first I was nose blind and didn't pick up on its alluring scent.
About 30 mins later as I was looking at some stationery at a different store, everytime I lifted mt hand, I caught a wift of a very captivating fragrance.
I was in love with it straight away then. As I returned home that day, the fragrance on my wrist was transferred to my jacket and my keyring. I treasured that keyring for weeks and everytime smelling it to catch a wift of the enigmatic fragrance. That is right, the best way to describe this scent is: an enigmatic and heart racing ambery jasmine. It is dark and broody but not sweet or punchy.
I have worn this fragrance and it has been a massive compliment getter. One note of caution, with this fragrance less is more. Do not exceed more than two sprays otherwise it will not be alluring but rather pungent instead. Spray less, captivate more!

umutakgun

As a man i love this fragnance.

I think if u’re a man and u like to wear this fragnance it’s okay. Don’t care ‘bout others. This was my sister’s signature fragnance. Now i am living away from her and this fragnance reminds her. So that’s why i wear Alien by Mugler. Also this perfume has something strange… smells so sexy and feminine but who’s care? If it’s good than wear it!

for a man better choice than Eros by Versace 🤭

dilakahveci

A very light, balanced jasmine and amber scent. I don’t really like the smell of jasmine, but this one is exceptional. It surprised me that its voted as a night and winter scent, because i totally disagree with that. It lasts too long and smells so smooth and clean, but its absolutely not for winter and fall, would rather use it in summer.

briannadedrew

Looking to sell my bottle to a resident in Ontario, Canada! Message if interested :)

Darling of Disquiet

I chose this to be my first newly purchased fragrance of this autumn. I had it like around 12 yrs ago about. Any ways I felt like trying a few scents that I don't really "know" for this fall and winter. From everything I remember I love this fragrance, I just hope it's not too different from reformulation. 🤞

Irb

This was my signature scent for years bit I used up my backup of the Clarins version, and just ordered a new one.
It was such a special scent and nothing else I tried really compared to it, it was love at first sniff. I love white florals overall so I really enjoyed the jasmine, but on my skin it was a lot warmer and woodier, so the jasmine note was not as prominent.
I have to say I’m really scared of the new reformulation, and will update once I test it out.
EDIT: It’s much more linear, lacks depth and not as longlasting. It makes me so sad but I will try to layer it with something to give it some depth and warmth. It still has the alien DNA, just really wattered down.

Dopaminerush

I used to love it and now I just like it. It’s very interesting and alluring at first and then it’s just a bit much-like eating too much cake. I really like the edt more because it has a black licorice smell and is more airy-although very similar. I’m new to fragrance and I don’t get the old lady smell, just smells a bit weird or chemical after awhile-like an air freshener might.

gardenia9

This has been tweaked and in a good way. It smells like the former one but a lot muted. It is a fragrance that I've always loved but haven't been able to wear due to its strength so maybe this is the time.

Samasama

This makes you want to study botanics to understand jasmine.

It always lured me in, even as a child.

I remember my mom having some sort of solid perfume on a tiny metal can shaped like a white flower and being so compelled by that slightly decaying aroma.

Getting Alien and loving and understanding it, to me, was a rite of passage into true adulthood.

Or should i say, alienhood. The not-male not-female not-human veil it gives you. Definitely not for everyone, of course. Not as in gatekeeping but as in expression. Not an expression everyone nowadays will want to have.

But an eternal staple for me.

ssamhita

I’m always intrigued by fragrances that have as big a haters club as that of a fan club. La Vie Est Belle comes to mind. As does Chanel N°5. Mugler’s Angel (and more recently, Angel Nova) And of course Alien.

So I read reviews, watched YouTube videos. One of my favourite reviewers wore it on her wedding day in what she says was sweltering heat and loved every bit of it because she smelled gorgeous. A friend in the fragrance community told me Alien reminded her of an Indian bride at the wedding mandap, sitting in front of the fire. And when I first sprayed it, my daughter told me I smelled like a temple.

This is jasmine, yes, but this is not the jasmine I grew up with it, smelling it on my Mamma’s hair as she plucked a few buds and tucked them in her bun. This is jasmine from some other universe, one that sparkles purple. This is a shape shifting jasmine - lush tropical with plump petals now, and then suddenly gossamer-thin, so delicate that the slightest breeze would turn it into glitter dust. I felt the scent move around me, like it had a life of its own. But calling Alien just a jasmine scent would be unfair to the cashmeran and amber that holds it up. Does one ever “smell” cashmeran though? Isn’t it kore of a feeling? Because I feel it - smooth, dulcet - taming the jasmine till it’s a silky soft purr of a scent. The amber sweetens it and makes it warm, making it glow. This is jasmine gifted to us mere mortals so we get to bask in its celestial glory.

I sprayed it in the morning on a day when I really needed a fragrance to hold me up and carry me through the day - and Alien delivered. It gave me company for more than six hours, and in the evening, when I undid my braid, I was greeted by the familiar scent. Made me smile all over again.

Is it blind buy safe? Heck no. But is it worth sniffing at least once? Absolutely. I haven’t smelled the newer formulation to compare but all I know is I am guarding my 60ml bottle with my life. That’s how much I am in love.

Rjhuggi

It's a love for me ❣️

candieslove

Basically I'm in love with this perfume. I was looking for an "edgy girl fragrance" and this is absolutely perfect for that description. The scent smells like a unique and realistic jasmine. I can't stop sniffing my wrist after spraying this perfume.

Bluetsprincess

People are always so weird about mugler fragrances. This is just a gorgeous jasmine? The imagery/names always make people think they're weirder than they are (see also: womanity)

I'm also confused that this largely gets labeled a fall/winter scent. It's a sexy floral! I love this for warm weather

ANNAFRYS

its a nightmare when I am in the airplane and strange woman smells it should be forbiden to wear it in the plane; besides it reminds me a time back to 2008 when I was dating a jazz man in Chicago and I used to wear it I remember Macys sold 20 or 15 ml of it it was so convenient to have a small bottle of it

Kturbitt

I was intrigued to try this as it kept popping up when I was looking at perfume and it is a classic, but it's so strong, reminds me of being in the car with my mother in the 90s and having to open the window. I can see there is something recognisable there but not for me and certainly not for everyday wear.

danilodeathayde

Simple, sober. I expected something different from a Mugler, something you'd either love or hate, but it was a pleasant surprise. It's quite delightful, with a fresh white floral, almost aromatic. In the drydown, it closely resembles Essencial Único Feminino (from brazilian's Natura), but it's less powdery and a bit lighter.

Bhavnalovesscents

Did not try this one for the longest time, but once i did there was no going back. Alien is the best white floral i have ever had in my collection. Its warm, cozy sweet and floral. It’s intoxicating and hard to get over. I have not tried anything quite like it. Its a must have for jasmine lovers.

Albena96

a blind buy and I really tried to like it and it didnt happen. I smell a very strong jasmine fragrance which makes me nauseating and headache. I gave it to my sister . she adores it.

GastonThem

Has anyone tried this recently? This does not even last 4 hours on the skin. Don't hate. I am not exaggerating.

Cristina S.

I can't believe I only now tried this! I instantly fell in love with it. I love white flowers in fragrances and so of course I would enjoy this. It's captivating and sensual, I think this would be best suited for a night out. When you first put it on it smells of jasmine but also of something else, a barry-like smell, fresh and lovely. That goes away very fast and then you're left with this gorgeous smell of jasmine. It is quite intense. You will feel as if you have thrown yourself in a wall of jasmine. I would have prefered if the base note was something like musk, as I don't love amber by itself, but you can't have it all.

katie02kat

My favorite perfume of all time, I can't imagine my perfume collection without it 🌸💜

Jessiebaby

This was my signature scent for years but since the reformulations I would not repurchase. It used to be so strong, mysterious and beautiful. Now it’s weak, average and only a glimpse of what it used to be.

Lilah_lilah2023

If you like delicate scents, this is not for you (and me). It's one of those that you spray and you're like "Mmh, interesting....wait, no thanks". It's too much, gives me nausea after a while. But it is an interesting scent.

The13thHour

Alien is my favorite Mugler perfume. It is slightly dark and I get the floral but there is so much more to this fragrance. I do not believe all the notes are listed. Other brands have tried to replicate this fragrance and never came close. It is beautiful and mysterious. I am not a fan of the other Alien hybrids like Flora Futura, Fusion and Goddess.

Andy224

Groundbreaking floral jasmine scent with great lasting power. Probably my favorite Mugler fragrance.

fyre92

So after some extended testing and research. This has become a fast favorite. NOT THE ONE THAT SAYS AZZARO ON THE BOTTOM. That one has been striped of the weirdness necessary in alien(I’ll list alternatives at the the end). The original from 2005 smells like purple grapes, moth balls, ambroxan, woods, Vanilla and a natural amber. It’s loud and sweet. It smells somehow minty and fizzy and not at all at the same time. The next iterations are all of the above with an over dose of Vanilla and the Jasmine is intensified without alot the fizz and mint. This is the best version and the sexiest. The recent version is an ambroxan bomb with jasmine and vanillin. The vanilla does NOT a smell real and there’s more than just cashmeran used as a musk in it. This is what you’d expect an alien dupe from Dua to smell like. Close but not quite.

If you like Alien you need to try

h149

Yes pretty, but a little too white too bright and too well-groomed. It‘s strictly whats crowd-pleasing about jasmine, censored jasmine, uninterested in full nudity never mind scraping anywhere into the guts. Someone on some other jasmine soliflore on this website had described Alien as a power washed version of the flower; they’re exactly correct. Zero skank. Jazz for Puritans. I imagine the stereotypical “fall girl” meme, the bottle blonde, bleached teeth, dressed in the boots and scarf and hat getup girl posed against orange foliage. Technically attractive, but not interesting, definitely not memorable. Hardly Alien at all, really. Just another Local.

annalise0151

I have Alien 30ml EDP

I must admit I have had my eye on Alien for a while and wanted to buy it because of the bottle. It said mysterious to me, and well, alien.

I didn't know much about it because it was released when I was too young so my interest just come out of me wondering from a far and it's popularity.

I was exited to smell it finally, expecting in my mind some sort of juicy, exiting scent. This was NOT what I was expecting. It's a very strong, jasmine, flat, one dimensional scent. I am disappointed. It's not particularly offensive, I am just disappointed. It is not "Alien" for what I imagined.

The good point is that it's very strong and lasts for eternity. This is hard to come by these days there is too many weak perfumes. So I am happy to finally smell like actual perfume all day.

The scent for me personally is just okay. Not horrible, quite pleasant but just not noteworthy. It is a strong, synthetic jasmine.

7/10

hawa438

This, for me, is hands down the sexiest fragrance for women. I was living in Paris in 2005 when this was released. I smelled it on a metro passenger. Immediately, I asked her what this intoxicating fragrance was. I ran over to the Mugler boutique which had been converted into an "Alien Experience" boutique. I purchased two bottles and mailed them home to my mother and sister. For months, my mother and sister were approached everywhere they went by strangers asking what they were wearing.

It's complete seduction in a bottle to say the very least.

Nimu

This is a very rare case for me when I end up hating something after loving it for years.
Also one of the rare cases that I completely use up and empty a perfume bottle.
I dont know if its reformulated or not but all I get from this now its an extremely heavy old fashioned outdated old lady powdery perfumie alcohol sharp jasmine/primrose smell.
Very synthetic.I cant stand the smell of Alien anymore.

LilitM

What makes it smell so sythetic?

Leila22920

Intoxicating, enigmatic, sultry. The scent of a seductress.

I was at the airport sampling everything the store had to offer and sprayed Alien on my shoulder (over my clothes). Throughout the day, I kept smelling wafts of something akin to Rouge Malachite: a warm and sensual amber white floral with mysterious sillage. Armani Privés imagined that scent DNA to belong to a Russian seductress. During my holiday, a receptionist at a private hotel wore it (I didn’t recognize it yet but I knew it was familiar). It pervaded the room like a jasmine treillis quietly blooming in the evening. It was absolutely gorgeous. I sampled it again today on my wrist and it is very clear you have to spray it parcimoniously and that it is much more beautiful in the air than close to the nose. Stunning chef d’œuvre by Dominique Ropion.

bajablast

This is a unique fragrance with a large following. When I joined Fragrantica, many users had Alien as their display pics. I love seeing how passionate others are about this, but after owning it for 3+ years I've realized it's just not for me. The jasmine is too overpowering and can make me feel nauseous, regardless of the season

jadeypink19

I don’t mind the smell of this but it’s a bit flat and one dimensional. I love jasmine as a perfume note but this is basically just pure jasmine and not much else. Very strong fragrance which means great longevity but it can be headache inducing and overpowering. Not full bottle worthy for me.

ru2

Overpowering, strong, one-dimensional. I’m a lover of jasmine, but the specific jasmine they used in this is not my favourite. It is a very distinctive perfume. Unfortunately I don’t think this goes with my skin scent very well. I know some people absolutely love it and it does really suit them. I’m also not one for strong fragrances and prefer to be a bit more understated.

don00

dry down is just realistic jasmine, if you like jasmine youll like this

This perfume is truly enigmatic. While simple, it remains so effective. It’s alluring and beautiful on its own, but works so well when mixed with other perfumes. On me this performs super well and gives off a Soleil Blanc vibe on me, so much so I layer them both.
