Absolutely stunning opening of sharp citrus that gradually fades into a cyber-goth synthetic rose patchouli.
A truly wild coloring that eventually dances down into a gentle woody haze of musk and amber.

Dark, Futuristic and Powerful.

toosimilar

I don't get those comparisons with Roses Musk
IMO this one is quite sweet and doesn't have any prominent note of rose
As well as a touch of freshness to it.

People go out of their way to smell me when I wear this. It's not a scent I would normally gravitate to, but it's become a go-to if I am looking to be noticed in the best way possible.

Synthetic, earthy, beast mode rose and plum fragrance that I can smell on my clothes days afterwards.

Chaos in a Bottle: The Unpredictable Essence of 'Dark Purple'

Imagine you and a group of strangers, each with intriguing backgrounds, have been whisked off to a secluded island. Here, the world's leading chemical engineers, molecular biologists, and aromachologists have been secretly gathered to resurrect aromas from bygone eras. After a whirlwind tour of cutting-edge labs, and a soft-on-details explanation of the mysterious science being used, you're introduced to their latest triumph: code-named "Dark Purple," a fragrance that promises to encapsulate the essence of Studio 54's 1970s heyday.

At first, tentative sniffs from the bottle or a paper strip deceive, akin to the anticipation one must have felt while queuing outside the legendary club. A synthetic rose and musk blend seeps through, reminiscent of the club's muffled beats. Yet, you didn't journey this far for mere hints and whispers. It's time for a full skin application.

Prepare yourself, for you've just been granted VIP access behind the patchouli-scented, velvet plum rope, and the atmosphere is electrifying. A bold synth track of rose and geranium takes center stage, backed by an irresistibly danceable beat of sweet, ambery musk. Within the first hour, "Dark Purple" unveils its final costume change into a vibrant, artificial rose musk. Yet, while all the devastatingly beautiful people are in attendance, you can’t help but notice that there's something just a little off.

That's when you learn the real secret behind this olfactory time machine: to bring ‘Dark Purple’ to life, they dared to blend scents from the world's most iconic scenes. New York’s brooding East Village, London's burgeoning punks, the Athens, Georgia art freaks, and even the legendary Chateau Marmont were used to patch in the missing pieces. This explains the surreal experience of witnessing a flower-covered, Bob Mackie-wearing Cher rocking out to a sweet, gourmand-soaked Diana Ross who’s belting out an impromptu 'Oh Bondage, Up Yours!' cover.

Attempting to capture lightning in a bottle, the creators have instead Frankensteined a fragrance that evokes nostalgia for an era witnessed only through photographs and film. "Dark Purple" is not for the faint of heart; its bold presence lingers well into the next day, morphing into a vintage, Oliver Goldsmith sunglass-wearing, powdery rose club-kid, that wistfully stares into the Tiffany's display window while sipping their iced macchiato.

For those familiar with the audacious spirit of "Dark Rose" and its Montale siblings, the revelation that these scents hail from Paris might surprise. Far from the clichés of demure elegance, these perfumes, encased in their loud metal bottles, are all brash and audacious brats. You will get asked what you are wearing, and with a few sprays, you're in beast mode territory.

When it's all over, you might end up feeling more like a chemically induced ‘Disco Sally’ than the chic, ‘Bianca Jagger atop a white stallion’ cosplay you were going for. But don't fret, that intriguing mathematician, who wore all-black and flirtatiously whispered chaos theory, asks you out, proving that perhaps “Dark Purple” was always intended for a clever girl or boy, like you, to forge new, unforgettable scent memories with. After all, as your future ex likes to say, "Life, uh, finds a way, baby”

This is an awesome dark purple rose, appropriately named.
I've gone through two bottles over the years.
Some people years ago used to do reviews saying how bad it is, smells like granny, smells like roses musk ext but for me it's a stand alone better than any other rose scent I've ever had or have ATM and I don't mind smelling like granny if granny smells like Dark purple.
I don't like Roses Musk so they are different.
Some say Dark Purple, it's synthetic and I have to agree, it's synthetic in the best way imaginable.
Smooth and deep, I'd love to compare it to others so you can imagine but although you can tell you are sniffing a Montale, for my olfactory sense this is the best one.
I love this more than all the others and I'm persuing a bottle so if you have it and hate it I have something you'd love I'm sure of it and we could make each other super happy this new year 😁🌹

SmellLush

Love love love. Fresh rose

black_etheric

I love the sample but I hate the bottle. The sample smells entirely better than what is coming out of the bottle, which is more of a metallic note. I suggest going to twistedlily.com and ordering the sample vs what you are smelling in the store.

nikonikobangbang

I wanted to like this so bad but when ever I try and wear it I just get this over powering rose scent. Some of the patchouli and plum but in there but in a deeply artificial way. I suspect it's just my body chemistry since it's smelled nice on my roommate but it still makes me sad it was a flop for me.

KöbiD

Oh wow, one should not apply too many sprays when wearing this one, otherwise the musky sharpness is overpowering! Right after spraying, I get an oud-like note that then quickly morphs into dried plums and a spritz of orange juice. The rose, geranium and dry patchouli notes appear after a few minutes, just before the oudy note makes a reappearance. Honestly, I prefer to smell this fragrance on someone else or from afar because then it reminds me of a stronger version of Chloé EDP. When wearing it myself, my nose gets constantly tickled by that Montale sharpness of which I am not a fan. Otherwise, the composition of notes is lovely, it is just ruined by that aggressive sharpness.

Esna

I love it 🍇💽💳🏎️💅🏻💜

At first, full blast Y2K plastic, then freshly done overpriced manicure. The smell of hot CD’s and vinyl in your car and sweet grape cough syrup bottle that fell between the seats. You insert the Mariah Carey Rainbow CD to play your song but you remember that HONEY is on the Butterfly CD that you left at home! Vintage Caboodles case filled with thick nail polish, Lancôme Juicy Tubes lipglosses and a brand new Mason Pearson dark ruby hair brush. Black LV Murakami print wallet with debit and Amex cards. The reaction of the diamond jewelry store sales rep when you ask for grape soda instead of the champagne they offered you. Dry down is melted grape Ice fun pop and plum; Diptyque Oyedo-esque.

Unisex, but for men just think DARK PURPLE.

RaggedyAnn

Off we go with the red berry (no top notes) followed with rose and patchouli. Then the geranium and basenotes and something is off and plastic. Smells exactly like that three day old baby bottle of juice found under the drivers seat in the dead of Summer. Sour. Elderberry? My friend however got completely different results and they were lovely. Try it and you might like it.

Emi93

Not similar to Roses Musk in the slightest (who even came up with that?). Roses Musk lovers beware. Don't blind buy and don't get your hopes up. This one has that overwhelming fruity note, I guess plum? Really sweet candied plum with a geranium punch in early stages. Once geranium wears off you're left with that typical sweet perfumey plum on a montale'ish base.

Sheherazad

Strange, shadowy, kind of intoxicating. Patchouli + a vague, medicinal rose ala Montale/Mancera DNA + fruit & woods. Smells like a musky, deep purple velvet cape w/ ambroxan crystal clasp at the throat. Beautifully dark, haunting, vaguely ominous. This composition expresses the Montale ambroxan DNA w/ more ethereal, less bludgeoning effect while still maintaining its typical beastly projection & longevity.

Nihal-la

Love at first spray! Elegant, sexy-rosy! When it’s settle down it gets more woody which I love. Longevity is about 7-8 hours on my skin.

Charmedbymeghan

This is a dark jammy berries & rose but the patchouli, amber & musk help to make it comforting and give it depth. It really is a beautiful dark purfume. This isn't for someone who is shy because this perfume is pretty strong. Even 2 sprays should do ya. People WILL DEFINITELY Smell You and you will smell dark & mysterious!

I love the scent. It reminds me some of Montale Intense Cafe, Mancera Rose Vanille, and Zara Rose Gourmand. But I do find differences among these... I like this & Roses Vanille the best out of the 4 though. I love this scent profile, so I will definitely use this up.

As someone mentioned below there is a similarity with this and Delina & Delina Exclusif... if you like those types of scents, you nay really like this too.

Ahmed Fafhil

it has some similarity with versace red jeans, dont judge on the first sniff give it sometime to settle

aicwilo

smells dangerous, however to me its not a seductive fragrance. definitely comforting in a way, to me its a rose plum jam you can find in a donut. this fragrance will undoubtedly boost your confidence

Waterlily333

This smells to me like a beautiful rice dark rose scent. The citrus brightens, the stone fruit provides juiciness, and the patchouli creates depth. I both love and hate rose fragrances. I can’t stand cloyingly sweet rose scents, but give me a deep dark rose like this and I’m intoxicated. Stunning.

lmnsvgz

Surprisingly earthy - I smelled a wine note, plum wine with patchouli essential oil drops inside it. Quite sweet but heavy.

minamartin

Like smelling into an old barrel of wine. I don't like wine.

MatchaCat

Initially this smelled bad. Like someone else mentioned, rotten wine, or dried prunes. I forgot about my sample for a couple months and came back to it. Now it smells great. I think the heat in shipping affected it. It basically smells like sweet juicy purple berries. This is an airy perfume that projects a lot. Very similar to Tenue de Soiree by Goutal, but stronger. A bit simplistic but nice. Sometimes I can detect an unpleasant plasticky oud in the background, but it's barely there. It doesn't affect the scent much. Feminine.

Smell: 8 out of 10
Longevity: 8 out of 10

For reference, I'm female.

Steph_S

This had been hidden on the back shelf of my perfume closet for a while. Today I was craving a sweet cozy scent, and this definitely fit the bill. I'd forgotten how much I like this. The first spray out of the bottle reminded me quickly. It reminds me of a dark sangria cocktail with fresh berries - without the alcohol smell. I can wrap myself up in a blanket and enjoy it on the cold day.

Kinga_

Sour rose and plum. Not a fan.

You might like it if you enjoy Delina.

Ground hound

Sweet, confident, the smoky smell creates a plum/prune effect, some medicinal rose on the background, all rounded up very well. 9/10

Gi5elle.C

I've been layering this with Montale Sensual Instinct (1 spray Dark Purple, 2 sprays SI). This will be my fall/winter scent. The Sensual Instinct sweetens the Dark Purple a little without changing the overall scent profile. On me, the drydown brings out the woods beautifully.

Mariyamokshina

I would wear this . has the ambroxan montale DNA, opening is a little fruity, sparkling wine citrusy, happy plums , the dry down reminds me of roses musk without the rose punch.

svdwdsn

Smell this from the sample i got. Opening is amazing, so fruity and sparkling. Not sure where the sparkling smell come from. But to my nose, there is. And then you get that Rose by Montale & Mancera dna.. drydown has similar vibe to Intense Cafe. Not the exact same, but similar. Like sisters from the same parents. Same but different personalities

The projection & longevity is INSANE. As usual for Montale. Even when i spray it only once only on my left wrist.. the person beside me can smell it. Crazy

KerriZ

I got a small remainder of a sample and love it. Plum and citrus shines through on the top and then it settles into a rosey musky remain... It has great longevity. nice sillage. Just a warm cozy scent.

EmpressVision

Got a sample. This was literally Montale Intense Cafe without the coffee/chocolate notes. The sillage and the longevity are excellent. The price point is good. This is a lovely fragrance but IMO Intense Cafe is more interesting because of the warm coffee/chocolate notes. So no FB for me.

Edit: I finally figured out what this smells like. Alexandre J. Rose Alba, which I own and love. Almost identical. This is more linear while Rose Alba is sweeter and muskier on the dry down.

sarahjayne_uk

Dark Purple 100ml - Blind bought, instant regret. I sprayed this fragrance a total of 7 times. If anyone in the UK wants to swap for Roses Elixcir / Roses Musk / Crazy In Love / Tiare or Mancera Coco Vanille / Instant Crush / Roses Vanille - please let me know - happy to accept half loved bottles too!

For me, this fragrances reminds me of pot pourri / plum / green. Whats crazy is I've smelt this on other people and it works with their DNA, but my skin is not working well with this.

KaliDurga

Grape Kool-Aid mixed with Oud. Very masculine. Good projection. Not for me.

okamikiera

Bitter and green, plant-like and somewhat true to rose but not so palatable. It misses the lightness of a real rose or even potpourri, instead feeling rather synthetic and heavy like a cleaning product.

akajulz

This scent is not for everyone and I can understand the polarized reviews. It's extremely strong and would probably cause a headache for some people. On me it smells like plums, roses, and incense. There isn't an incense note in it but that's what it smells like on me. I find myself smelling my wrist constantly because it's so unique. I would never wear it to an office or in any kind of confined space. It would be like wearing the '80s version of poison in a confined space.

HMY

this is one of my fav perfume from Montale, its so different from the rest of perfumes. on my it smells as dark purple indeed; i smell the plumb, and berries and a little bit of orange but its more of touch of orange not citrusy orange. the projectivity is great (as another montale's perfume) you spray it twice and it lasts all day . I can smell it from my clothes second day as well. if you like fruity perfume (not tropical but dark fruits) then this is for you. the rose tones up the fruits a lot which means that this is not Escada tropica fruit perfume.. its more complex, dark and sophisticated. I would recommend for young girls +20 yrs

Dawnzle

I didn’t mind this at first spray. However once it dried down, all I got was very strong geranium and citrus.

Eldee123

It’s a lovely fruity floral scent. Very strong but pretty. Try to obtain a sample to experience it without committing to a FB. Not for everyone but I appreciate the craftsmanship.

Seuni

It really does smell of dark purple. There's a lot of floral, powdery rose followed up by juicy, really purple plum.

It's pretty linear, it's strong, floral, feminine. Best for autumn and spring evening, but will work anytime except heat. Not sure if safe for office.

AndraLau

Sad and disappointed

I wanted to love this perfume so bad, I had really high expectations from the notes and how they are layered but sadly I only can strongly dislike this scent. The opening is painfully strong, I do not know what it is, but the plum in this fragrance is so weird it smells almost chemical, like the peroxide tube that comes in those hair dye boxes, I almost could not get my nose close to my wrist because the burning sensation was very uncomfortable I had to keep my distance while trying to smell it, it took a long time to dry, and even tho u can feel the roses and some amber in the back I had to wash this off my skin quickly because it gave me an instant headache, but the performance is very good so it was not an easy task.

I do not like this perfume, I do not think is horrible but I can not wrap my head around the idea of someone wanting to wear this, but of course this might smell completely different and more appalling in someone else. Please sample it first this is not a safe blind buy, I am so saddened about this fragrance that I seriously have nothing else to say other than I do not recommend this perfume at all.

samswim

This was an accident I made a mistake buying online and ordered the wrong scent. A good accident though, I see this is supposed to be for women but I have the confidence to wear this. Lots of fruit and rose that lasts for ever, that'll do.

mrsoutlaw

I really do not like this one. I found the plum rose scent to be quite cloying. This fragrance smells of cheap, sugary bubble gum and cough syrup. Even as the patchouli and teakwood notes warmed up, I found myself frowning each time I inhaled this fragrance. It has an extensive sillage, but because I did not find the fragrance enjoyable, the sillage only served to help make this fragrance headache inducing. I would not recommend Dark Purple with its sickeningly sweet artificial fragrance to anyone.

Mara44!

What a lovely perfume! A nice combination of plum, orange, rose and geranium! Projection and sillage are quite good. I would definitely recommend it since it is unique. One of Montale's best creations!

RiddlesKitty

Does not smell like the actual perfume notes. Opens with a strong blast of bitter bergamot and purple florals (a la Lilac). Dark green AND dark purple. Smells a lot like a luxurious lemon floor cleaner. A little synthetic.
Drydown: Strong Geranium, Amber, Musk
This is mainly a Geranium fragrance, in all it's astringent, bitter, lemony glory.
Sillage is impressive, and lasts all day. A very good value if you like the scent.

floszra

Smells just right, but after the fruity blast at the beginning, it smells quite similar to Intense Roses Musk, so it lacks uniqueness. I'm part of the group who feels like every Montale rose builds up to be the same in the end.

La grande bellezza

I bought a sample because plum note, but I don't smell plum.
I feel “flavoured” bubble blower with purple/red/blue grapes gummybears sweet candies. Synthetic of washing-up/degreasing liquid/bubbles meets purple/red/blue gummybears candies.

Ninaleen

This is a total beast in terms of performance. I tested it at the Bloomingdales counter and even after I’d gotten home and showered, I could still smell it faintly. My only gripe, and the only reason I’m not running to buy a FB of this, is that it’s soooo heavy on the rose. One of my coworkers wears Roses Musk, and I think Dark Purple smells too much like it to be distinctive. I’ll stick with Dark Vanilla or Honey Oud. Otherwise, Dark Purple is dense and beautiful.

TushTush

The best fragrance for sunny autumn days. I can’t see myself wearing it in other season. It’s rich, classy and elegant. The strongest notes to my nose are rose and plum.

hgraceschmitz

I got a sample of this based on the Fragrantica profile and I am so glad I did. It just started getting cold where I live and I have given up my summery scents for this rich, stunning fragrance.

It starts out deep, rich, fruity, spicy, and floral. As it wears, and it wears forever, it becomes something akin to a dessert of rich chocolate cake, red berries, and a glass of tawny port. If you are looking for a colder weather fragrance that has somewhat strong sillage and lasts well into the next day (I've even detected it after showering!), look no further. This is one of my go-to scents for fall and winter, it's simply lovely.

KymIndigo

Is it weird that this scent smells like it's name? A soft, heavy, musky rose with some kind of dark fruit that I'm guessing is the plum note listed in the pyramid. It dries down heavy on the rose and musk, with a faint, almost tart scent to counterbalance. After half an hour there's a very light wood base, maybe vetiver? By this point all the notes appear to meld together into a soft but thick, musky, rose aura with a touch of berry and plum maintaining the "dark" aspect.

Lovers of musk scents would likely appreciate Dark Purple. It's a twist on the usual light musk that seems to be the go-to for soft fragrances. Relatively non offensive, this might suit an office environment or cool weather casual outings. It's actually a pretty good contender for a men's musk, though it is femme leaning - I can imagine a man would be complimented on this as an unexpected choice. Be careful not to overspray as it does tend to waft.

AmoreProfumi

This scent is so nostalgic to me..just thinking of it I can almost smell it. I worked in a niche shop several years back & this scent just reminds me of that little shop; swear of all the scents in there this was the stand out smell that filled the store..(this and the red Aoud) don’t think I’d ever do a full bottle but did just order another sample just to smell it when I want a flashback.. loved that job (what got me into the world of niche) shame the owners had to close :/ just wasn’t the right area for the market.

noam1122

hey people, can some one help me i recently bought this fragrance and i get no longevity with it, does some one know about any reformulation? (as a side mark it doesn't smell that dark, musky and woody as as the tester in the store)

DacontaE

I ordered a custom sampler set from the Montale website and was interested in the notes so decided to give it a try. Out of the 5 I ordered this was my least favorite initially so I decided to spray it on my skin and let it sit for the evening just to see how it performed.

At first I did not love it, I still don't love it but it started to grow on me. I'm incredibly sensitive to patchouli and of course that's what my nose picked up on almost immediately, I was hoping for the plum or orange note to come through but no dice. After a few hours though when it started to settle down and the amber and musk started to come through? Beautiful. It started giving off soft mysterious vibes. It's not loud and attention seeking, but rather intimate, sexy, and confident. This is definitely something I would consider a grown woman smell, it's not for the every day or teenagers (to me) and definitely for someone with intent. May it be to feel sexy, dark and mysterious, etc.

It also did last a LONG time. I sprayed it at 8pm and it was the first thing I smelled when I woke up at 7:30am! I was definitely surprised. I think it's a good fragrance with WONDERFUL lasting power, it's just not for me personally.

BG fragrance

I blind bought this perfume and I didn’t know what to expect from Dark purple. The name suits perfectly to the juice itself. It’s a dark “cold” juicy smelling plum with a lot of Montale’s signature rose. It’s not for the teen audience for sure, it is more mature. The opening is sharp and synthetic /like most of the Montales/ it’s not a safe blind buy and I don’t think it’s everyone’s cup of tea.

ShoGirl

This came in a box of Montale fragrances samples I picked up some time ago; I'd never reached for it before now, because while the name and the notes sounded great on the site, when I'd plucked this sample out the box and sniffed a spritz out the bottle..... it smelled exactly the same as the majority of the other Montale samples, to be honest. Few months later I dig it out and give it a spray on the ol' pulse points...... meh. It still smells to me just of "Montale". Which isn't a bad thing, but so many of them are smell-alikes! All I'm getting is a tattered, vintage rose with wood, almost a rose pot-pourri; strong woody notes and a middle-Eastern feel, almost an oudhiness although there's no oudh on the list of notes. It's not bad; it's just so like Intense Cafe / Honey Oudh / Orange Oudh and others that came in the box with it that I honestly couldn't pick it out in a lineup as anything other than "a Montale".

I give it a while to settle and sniff again. There's definitely a sweet undernote to this Montale that's fruity and maybe makes me think of plums, it is sort of "Christmassy" but it's still overwhelmed by the woody rose pot pourri in the fragrance. I get some musk too, just faintly and something a little tangy..... I'd have guessed pine? No pine OK in the notes, maybe it's the teak. Still smells like a "Montale rose-pot-pourri in a bottle" number like so many others of the samples I've tried and I'm really trying hard to pick out anything else at all. That Montale "trademark" rose and wood blend is just super overwhelming to my nose. It's OK but it's not anything special. The End (tm). Next!

Helenka_Pinda

Loud bubblegum.

PudgeLikeMe

I love this fragrance! To me, the plum is very "cold" upon first spray, and it stays that way throughout the wearing. The roses start coming in and turn this into, what I feel, is a medicinal/dentists office sort of scent. Weird, huh? Most people HATE that smell(present company included), but for some reason, it works very well HERE. Someone below mentioned a skanky smell in here. Guess that's what that is...that or the girl that was wearing it. This is a MONSTER when it comes to longevity & sillage. I could smell it from the time she walked in, until the time she went home. I could also tell where she had been, because this thing is the definition of "chemtrails". I'm considering buying a bottle of this, because even though most have voted this as a female scent, I have the cojones to pull this off ;)

LinaSVas

This is a fruit cocktail fragrance....
I got this perfume right after smelling a sample of it as I was completely enamored by it.
Dark Purple is a juicy floral-fruity perfume, with very prominent sweet dark plum; hints of rose and fresh orange nuances. The red berries are very subtle and not always detectable. I think it is an aoud based perfume as it has a very oriental/middle eastern aura.
In my opinion, this perfume is very versatile I can see it being used by a wide demographic ranging from young high schoolers to older women. It's mostly unisex however, I do believe it leans more to the feminine side men who exude confidence would be able to pull this perfume off.
When I walk into a room whilst wearing this perfume, the scent fills the room. If I spray this on in the morning it lasts the whole day up until I shower. My nose does get used to the scent so I do stop noticing it after time. nevertheless, it is still recognizable by others. If I spay this onto my clothes the scent doesn't go away at all until clothes are washed. However, don't spray directly onto white clothes as it stains.
If somebody was to ask where they could wear this perfume I would definitely say that it is super versatile. It can be used casually, in a work environment, on dates, and even clubbing.

Zoë101

Oooooooo, this is nice. A very fragrant cold plum.

It’s not a sweet or gourmand fragrance. For some reason, I’m getting a slightly mature plum with an odd but magical minty or menthol kind of note attached to it at first spritz. Just amazing! A true experience. That might be why people are calling it a “cold” plum. I feel bossy when i wear this one. I love it 💜💜

RATING: 8/10. 💜💜

gands

Nothing about this is fruity or sweet. I don't smell plum, no orange and definitely no berries. This smells like if a middle eastern oil perfume store dropped all glasses of perfume oils, they blended and were mopped up, and then shoved into this ugly perfume can. Sorry not sorry.

xoxo S

Lilli95

This is not very sweet! Cold fruity opening, but the plum dissapated on me and left pretty dry unisex musky smell. Not off-putting, but not ”wow” to me. Wished for something more juicy and sultry. This could work year round night time of you like it. Smells like a dry plum grandma soap on tree branch to me though.

dan_d

My first Montale fragrance. I’m totally speechless. I’ve applied 1x spray 6 hours ago and it’s still room filling. I've ventilated the room several times ...! I’ve many strong perfumes (Tom Ford, Gaultier, Joop, PR) but this one is crazy. Love the rose in this scent ... so happy with this blind buy. But I should buy a more masculine fragrance from Montale next time <3

Christinageor10

The name suits it perfectly, IMHO. The beautiful plum note mixed with musk and rose is so sultry. I wear this one on date night and it is just perfect! Projection and sillage are excellent like with most Montale fragrances and you only really need a couple sprays.

Nolo Sath

It’s still strong after 18 hours of spraying it on my clothes. I love the smell on my clothes and hair.

I thought I was going to like this, the mega plum note was so enticing, and then it felt oddly familiar. A smell I knew very well.. I tried to figure it out for a bit and it hit me... Hair Mousse from the late 80s. Either Salon Selectives or Finesse?? It smelled like my grandmother putting her hair in pin curls at night.

Dark Purple opens with ripe purple fruits and red berries, carried by a dark freshness.

The scent evolves into a deep, dry and cool fruitchouli which becomes mixed with Montale's classic combination of roses and oud-like woods.

The rose here veers slightly feminine, pink and just slightly powdery. The woody notes are mildly skanky, warm and smooth.

There is a dark, woody musk in the base which powers the scent in the dry-down.

Performance is powerful - a spray or two travels rather far and hangs around for half the day.

Overall, Dark Purple is a likeable, Gothic and feminine scent which presents a Montale twist on the popular fruitchouli, with the expected potency too. A rare plum scent, and rather unique smelling. Definitely worth a sample.

Montale... I beg you, please stop rereleasing the same fragrance and just adding 1 note. Please. I will not be spending another dime, I’m sick of this screechy Roses musk smell. I should not have 3 of the same fragrance from the same house. I’m pissed, if you haven’t noticed lol. Spending all this money on y’all and you can’t get a little more creative? This is just Roses musk/Roses vanille/intense cafe (no coffee) with plum. I was so excited too smh

Update on longevity...
I mean.. THIS IS A MONSTER ! Easily lasted me from 10:30 in the morning till 11 pm! And I could actually smell it without going to close to my arm. Just had a shower and still, if I go very very close to my skin can smell it slightly.. this is a beast! And I’m sure this is definitely the strongest perfume I own. The only one that is close to it ( 7-8 hours) is JPG Scandal.

Love the scent, love the dry down, longevity wow.
10/10

Kswhittaker

To me very similar to roses musk, but very prominent plum in the opening, can smell red berries very clear too! Now when it calmed down a bit rose is coming out with patchouli. On first impression I like it! Need to test longevity on it 🙏🏻

Fleurie20

Dark Purple is a "dark & deep" scent, but not that dark nor deep, if that makes sense lol.

On me the rose and the musk are just in the face. After testing all the vials in the four discovery sets purchased on Montale website (3 "default" sets and 1 customized set), I have come to the conclusion that Montale tends to make their rose note pretty harsh, metallic and synthetic - which I'm not a fan of. Their rose also tends to overshadow pretty much any other notes in the concoction, even if the other are strong ones, like coffee in the Intense Cafe.

Montale is a relatively new perfume house, being established in 2003, yet they have an impressive repetoire of 143 fragrances. So in the 17 years from 2003 to 2020 they churned out an average of 8.5 new scents a year. I wonder if it is this fact that makes quite a few of their perfumes relatively boring and repetitive.

rosebunnii

This is a very boring fragrance. I smell only shampoo and I can't identify the plum or rose. In fact, all notes are heard toidentify except the synthetic sharp shampoo smell with a slight rose. I love both intense cafe and intense tiare so synthetic doesn't bother me. This is just a bore.

jadepo21

Gag-inducing sweetness with a sharp undertone that burns the nostrils. The dry down is still sickeningly sweet and headachy. I loathe this scent. It’s artificial and heavy. Cloying even.

Edit: After continuing to test this, I have finally identified the quality I hadn't been able to put my finger on...air freshener. I had two different people make comments suggesting I smelled of something I had sprayed in the bathroom and that had lingered on my clothes. It's got a very chemically and heavy quality to it that usually masks other, more potent, odors.

nirvana6

Good fragrance, different from all I have got in my collection, as I don't lean towards rose scents. I blind buy it and I was expecting a fruity perfume, but scared it would be like those celebrity fruity too sweet scents. But fortunately, it isn't. Rose is the queen of this, a beautiful dark and gothic rose. I can hardly smell anything else. It's a bit powdery and sharp.
I think it's all year appropriate, and I will wear it mostly by day.
I don't find it strong at all, more like a skin scent. Projection it's ok, but not beast mode.
Note: 7/10
Edit: after some more uses I am not sure about it. It doesn't last on me more than two hours, with strong projection for 30min...I was expecting more from Montale. Not bad, just not a love. And I can not wear it often because my husband doesn't like it.

byrd813

This smells like a fruity intense cafe with no vanilla or coffee.

If you already have intense cafe, you don't need this. But it could be nice to have as it has a certain juiciness to it. They are very similar.

Montale Dark Purple Women EDP opens with a strong projection of sweet, fruity, floral, and musky accords. The opening is intense, very projecting, elegant, mature, refined, fresh, and very pleasant. The rose and plum are the most noticeable notes; the plum is a sweet, fruity, dense, and inviting note, it comes across as very sweet and therefore evocative of tasty plum jam as opposed to plum the fruit. The rose is a very aromatic note, red rose-like, feminine, slightly powdery, intense, seductive, sweet, and natural. The orange and patchouli are support notes, just faint sweet citrus, and a green sharpening touch, but nothing noticeable. Similarly, the red berries contribute with a faint scent making the fragrance feel fruity and delectable. And the fragrance dries down, the initially shy white musk grows very fast, projecting the fragrance exponentially. This is a white clean, mild powdery, aromatic musk and not animalic or harsh, but very projecting. The amber contributes by enhancing the projection with a sweet, warm, and resinous touch but not as intense as the white musk. Finally, the teak wood brings a very refined and elegant woody touch, acting as the stage for the rest of the notes. The fragrance has a very little opening to dry-down changes, the dry down feels more powdery than the opening, this is the result of the white musk and amber developing a brief moment after the initial application, the projection remains very strong between the two stages. Once Mondale Dark Purple Women EDP has reached its full dry down it can be summarized as a very strong projection, sweet, rose, plum, and white musk fragrance with fruity and woody accords. The fragrance feels bold, comforting, commanding, delectable, delicate, delicious, dense, dry, elegant, energizing, exotic, expensive, feminine, fine, floral, formal, fragrant, fresh, fruity, high-quality, imposing, intense, intimate, invasive, inviting, long-lasting, mature, modern, white musky, natural, nicely-blended, powdery, refined, rich, romantic, seductive, sweet, versatile, zesty, and very pleasant.

Dark Purple
It opens with a synthetic orange then dips to the woody base, shortly after the rose/geranium combo kicks in. Plumberry edges the rose to come up with a fruity jam. Its the new formulation. If you like patchouli/rose combinations, its one to check out. Im not a huge fan of it as it leans a little leafy herbal dry for my tastes but fans of the genre, its worth a check out. The rose moment is very nice.

Rhialto the Marvellous

So, I got a sample of this and decided to wear it today.

First off, performance is stellar on this. Just a few tiny spritzes from a small tester vial and I'm sitting here more than 12 hours later still smelling it all the time, non-stop, without having to press my nose to my wrist at all. Great longevity. Gotta love the Montale performance. I got the impression sillage is pretty beastly as well. As I was moving through the house, I was clearly picking up my own scent trail when coming back to places I walked around earlier.

As for the scent itself, I get rose. Lots of rose and virtually nothing else. Maybe I'm getting the plum and the berries, I don't know, but what I smell is that typical Montale rose they use in many of their perfumes. I remember last summer I had testers for So Amber and Aoud Forest, both of which have prominent rose notes, and to my nose this smells almost exactly like So Amber. Maybe if I could compare the two side by side, I would be able to tell the difference and I could pick up the fruity notes in Dark Purple, but I just feel like I'm just getting rose and nothing else. And musk I guess. Coming to think of it, this might just smell exactly like Roses Musk. Now I'm curious. I'll go to the department store and sniff them all again, just to satisfy my curiosity. In the opening I got a bit of orange, but only when smelling my skin up close.

It's very linear and simple, but I like it. There's something sort of addictive to it, weirdly. At the same time it's nothing special, really. My girlfriend walked in and said it smelled too much like air freshener, which is not exactly a compliment. =/

sofiadore

This smells exactly like the fake lipstick I got in my Barbie makeup studio situation as a child. So a bit like poison.

brightflashes

This perfume morphs quite a bit and seems to have a different opening for everyone.

For me, I smell Plumb, Orange, and florals on wet and as it dries, the florals become more vivid with Rose in the lead. I'm not smelling the geranium as much as I want, but that doesn't take away from the nice smell.

This is a youthful smell and gives off a drugstore style smell, but I still like it quite a bit. Depending on how much my 13 y/o daughter likes it too, this could turn into a big bottle.

lavender_wind.

Slightly disappointed. It has the standard Montale sig: an artificial smell of rose oud. On top of that, there is a bit of grape soda aptly described below.

If you are looking for a nice plum/dark frag, highly recommend Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir. Unfortunately, this Montale is of no comparison.

My fav Montale so far is Roses Musk. I've tried Dark Aoud, Dark Purple and Intense Cafe. For reference, I'm a professional woman with a fairly girlie taste in fragrance, preferring fruity, musky, rosy and neroli type of scents.

pythongirl

grape soda.

Zornitsa Tasseva

A very juicy sharp rose. It bugs me so much. Almost got a headache.

elledeelee

For the first three seconds I got a beautiful, deep woody oudish scent and thought I was going to love it, but this was immediately overtaken by bright, fluffy, sweet florals, then a tangy fruits-of-the-forest cocktail reminiscent of an Avon bubble bath. Nothing dark about this one unfortunately. As it dries down it turns into a standard, pretty rose oud, but I have other rose oud combos in my collection that are darker, sexier, jammier, overall better and a damn sight more affordable. Sillage only lasted about a couple of hours on me.

bintTapputi

This is very beautiful for about an hour to two hours, then it mellows out into a nice slightly sweet skin scent. Wish it lasted longer but the initial bit is just really too good to pass up. So far, this is my favorite perfume from Montale. It's sexy, dark-ish, very demanding and mature. It's not an oud but it hearkens to the idea of oud or bakhoor. Very celebratory. Musky, juicy and plump. Lovely! 8/10

akarmi

It seems oudish at the top.
Then I sense some typical Montale muskiness, maybe with some rose.
Only in the basenote comes out the plum.
Way less sweet then I excepted and not as dark. Not to complex daytime fragrance for fall.

NanaLoBell

This is my first Montale fragrance, I was very curious about longevity and projection as people often says it's eternal lasting.

10mins: Starts pretty bitter by red berries, with some earthy undernote that I assume is patchouli. First 10 mins it doesn't smell really good honestly. Reminds me of some fragrance compositions used in surface cleaning products. I think it's geranium that gives this "artificial clean" scent.

20mins: rose is starting to hit the door. Patchouli still stays in behind giving a bit artificial "surface cleaning" accord. There is some sweetness from plum, trying to have it's debiut, everything seems to get more creamy by musk.

..and now SHOCK:
After patchouli dries out it and plum will finally sugar coat this prominent rose and geranium the magic happens... it develop into sweet, deep, dark fragrance. this requires PATIENCE. But it's worth it.

It's like this mysterious woman on a cruise ship. She wears mostly black, white and nude, has long black hair, super shiny. You can see she has money. From her Prada purse she takes her sunnies out and as she sips her black coffee the red lipstick stain leaves its mark on white porcelain cup. Reminds me a bit of Yennefer from Witcher - but from video game, not this sad abomination that they made in Netflix..

Overall I am happy with this purchase. In the beginning I thought I need to get rid of this asap but after it dried down I am going to wear this for sure.

I think it's all year fragrance for strong characters. If you find yourself more delicate then it's a great fragrance for night out.

With a lot of Montale's creations I feel like they are initial mistakes that the perfumer couldn't care less to fix. Same with that. This smells like an undercooked soup of rotten plums with patchouli and rough oud.

rosequeen

Way femmier (more femmie) than I was expecting. It's not like I wasn't warned; anything that admits to using red fruit cocktail as a heart note might not be a dark and brooding fragrance you'd like, rosequeen. It got swept away with idea of rose petals, geranium bourbon (whatever that is), and patchouli heart notes. Not like it hasn't happened before either.

The first blast is heavy and syrupy, but instead of heading towards the depths of despair/throbbing woodlands I expect with something that has "Dark" in its name, it's sort of a mid-level plum dueling with some lesser rose, with the geranium sitting at the sidelines and the patchouli falling asleep.

It isn't horrible, but it's disappointing and poorly named. It should have been called Dark Plum, but that doesn't sell as well.

LifeByZen

I tested one spray on a card and it is gorgeous and unexpected. The rose was a very nice surprise. In a previous review, someone mentioned Noir de Noir and I can see that although I find NDN to be more like wet roses. The rose in Dark Purple is more lush and elegant. I can also get the green rose referenced in another review. All in all, this is a gorgeous fragrance that may be more appreciated by lovers of fragrances that are deep and full of drama, nothing light and playful about Dark Purple.

I tested it on my skin and the rose in Dark Purple reminded me of MFK Oud Silk Mood.

ambstuart29

I have a 0.27oz spray from Scent Bird if anyone would like to trade. I was not a fan of this whatsoever.

cranky137

I am happy I bought a sample to try this one. Montale signature rose, deep and oudy (oud is not listed), I do not detect any plum...

Heavy and not very Original. A pass for me

T-MacJr21

Reminds me of Bond no. 9 New York Oud

Eugenia Olesen

It is the only Montale I liked so much so I decided to purchase it. Dark red, rough, velvety musky rose. Slightly acidy bitter plum. Beast mode, that I can hardy imagine where to wear it – in the open space maybe? One need to be careful with the dosage – the fragrance is very loud and strong. Deep, sexy and mysterious. Would be a perfect choice for a night out.

Jacquis

Dark purple is a sweet, deep, syrupy, fruity, jammy rose, decadent, dark purple perfume. The name is a perfect description. I really enjoy the decadence of this perfume. It envelopes me in a drippy, sticky cloud of almost over ripened fruit and deep rose. I absolutely love this. From a sample to a full bottle.

If you are familiar with Montale fragrances, you will recognize Dark Purple as part of the family. On my skin, there is a close resemblance to Tom Ford Noir de Noir. Both are lovely. I wear Dark Purple all year long (apologies ;). Decadent.

Naji

Montale has run out of inspiration. Tired repeats of newer releases. Montale, please re-invent yourself. Mancera is suffering the same fate. No surprise since it’s the same house.
Pierre Montale, look to noses like Ellena and Ropion. Get some help.

LalaWalker

Dark purple smells like old 70's antique furniture store, although I didn't care too much for the initial first spray, I find that within time as it fades it smells alot better like a deep rose.

Kots_Tanya

Oh my this has to be my favorite from Montale so far, I love the Rose musk and best part is those red berries that makes it smell so refreshingly sour a bit but yet that rose and musk make it smell so beautiful.
I see a lot of people say it’s unisex but I’ll be honest I don’t want my man to smell like that, I’m sure he will appreciate me smell like that tho. It does lean feminine, a lot.
Sooooo I bought a full bottle, like I don’t have enough rose fragrances...lol... I sprayed to compare and honestly they’re all different that I have, the dark purple smells more green roses but musky and red berries, so good. I learned I love red berries in fragrance. It just adds freshness to the fragrance so well. I feel like it’s a good sub for lemon or orange blossom if you are tired of them like me.

lediperehodovarts

Hate to say it but I have found my first dud from Montale.

Dark Purple smells great from the bottle no doubt, but the moment it hit my skin yeah the reviewer below me summed it up pretty well. At least Oud Dream had a better drydown despite it's divisive opening. I'd rather wear that one over this any day.

cowgirl_buckwheat

Dark Purple is interesting...it lasts forever, and smells like a musky animal rolled in rotton fruit with a hint of all natural bug spray. There is a peek of rose every once in awhile and some amber i guess. P.s. i got the Fruits & Vanillas discovery set as well and enjoyed all of the other scents just not this one.

Spirit Rose

I too just received the Fruits & Vanillas discovery set yesterday, but I had much better success with it. I only sprayed one small spray of each on each finger, but this came through most prominently with the rose. Rose is tricky for me. Most roses wear too sour. Oud roses can have too strong of oud for my taste. Patchouli roses can turn too herbal in a dirty way. This one the rose smelled deep, a bit waxy, a little sweet and fruity. I enjoyed it. As it dried down, it got more woody, and I have to say that I liked the rose better. But then again, a tiny spray on one finger with several other scents surrounding it isn't really a proper way to judge. I will wear the sample when I want to feel particular elegant or sexy, as that was my first impression of it, and will amend my review if my impression changes.

savvyminx

An hour after applying a single spray to my wrist, I still feel like I have my nose shoved in a jar of isopropyl alcohol. I honestly can't single out any of the listed notes other than a hint of rose and patchouli swimming in a sea of harsh alcohol.

Montale's DNA seems to be a bracing synthetic that literally stings my nostrils. There's a screeching sharp chemical smell that does not dry away and obscures any fragrance notes that may actually be present.

I got the Montale Fruits & Vanillas discovery set* and I am SO disappointed in the entire line. I'm sad I wasted $30 with shipping to try these 7 'fragrances' because they're either just awful or my skin chemistry is dead wrong for them.

*Discovery set includes: Vanilla Absolu, Sweet Vanilla, So Amber, Dark Purple, Intense Cafe, Chocolate Greedy, Soleil de Capri

churinl

Sigh. Yet another Montale that is not for me. It's the rose! I just can not tolerate the metallic quality I get from their rose heavy scents! Throw in some patchouli, and some of their musk and it is just awful. Not just on my skin either. I KNOW that many others love this, so I can really only chalk it up to the way my nose reacts to this combination. I saw TF Plum Japonais mentioned in some review and IMHO, they are nothing alike. There are no jagged edges to PJ, while DP is so sharp, I feel like it could cut you if you spray too much. To those who love her, I envy your experience, but to me, this is intolerable.

AnlisaC

This is a big NO for me. Let me say this...wow my nose went crazy when I sprayed this. It never dried down from the first spicy spray. It lingers forever, not a keeper for me. I do like Montale, I own a few. Patchouli leaves Intense Tiare , I love them both.
This is in your face. Too oud and honestly if dark purple (color) had a smell this is it !

favillaetcinere

Such a deep, satisfying scent. I can smell the jammy fruits, the rich rose and the cold earthy tones. Also I don’t like patchouli but this perfume is starting to change my mind about it. Dark Purple makes me feel powerful, sexy and clean. I usually wear it on a night out and special occasions. It’s bold and heavy but not offensive. 1-2 spritz is enough and lasts extremely long (8+ hours). Perfect for someone who likes sweet scents and wants to venture into something darker.

sugar_sweet

It is a very loud rose, deep, dark, sensual, very feminin. Perfect for a date nigth, my husband made a good coment allready he smell it on me. The lasting power is huge, aprox 7 hours on my skin.

Hastey

Opens with potent rose, but as it progresses the plum comes into play. There are woods in the background, but don’t play a big part in the fragrance to my nose. You can smell the musk interwoven with the florals. This is a predominately jammy rose fragrance. A male could pull this off, but it definitely leans feminine to me.

A very elegant feminine fragrance for formal occasions.

cedar_lea

Very elegant.

It starts with a breath of oud making me think excitedly "this is going to be dark" and then it immediately brightened with a true, if a little exaggerated rose scent given extra complexity with a remarkably juicy plum and a bit of berry. The patchouli and woods stay in the background giving the scent a bit of an edge. The orange and geranium occasionally peek out at me, but it is primarily very floral. It would be easy to dismiss it as another rose-oud if it wasn't for that plum. It thankfully stays around.

Pianomelody

Dark Purple is a sort of dark/gothic parfume with pungent fruity notes. It opens with an orange and a "dense" plum note. With an unusual character it is an essence with a strong impact, and with a magnificent note of white musk and teak wood in the drydown that leaves a hypnotic and extremely "dark" trail. This is marked as for "woman" but according to my opinion I feel that it can be easily unisex, it is a beautiful perfume and I can not wait to take it with me on autumn days.... simply fantastic!

Sillage: 9./10
Longevity: 10./10
Scent: 9./10

Overall: 9./10

Dundar

Described for women but this is very unisex as many other Montales. If you like patchouli then this is for you. Rose is strongly there and although it's not mentioned in the notes the oud is shining from beginning to the end.
Longevity and sillage is ... Montale standart; excellent. Countless compliments received up to now but be careful, this is not an aqua this is very bold and daring scent.

landshark321

A nice fruity-rosy combo, Montale Dark Purple hits on a couple of spots in which the house tends to succeed.

A plum opening is a sweet start, a mixed floral heart dominated by rose is most of what I associate with this fragrance, and a woody musky dry down gives it a soft landing place. Pleasant from start to finish.

In Dark Purple, though, I don't feel they've accomplished something all that special but rather created another pleasant entry that, while perhaps suiting some wearers perfectly, very much mimics a lot of their catalog, but as far as adding volume to their catalog, Dark Purple is not an unworthy entry. And as usual with Montales, it's a great performer.

It's surely worth trying, as it might fit the bill perfectly for you, and compared to other niche, is moderately priced (currently only $95 for 100ml on Notino), but I've personally found various other better sweet rose fragrances on the market that I prefer, such as Tom Ford Noir de Noir and Cafe Rose, and Armani Prive Rose d'Arabie.

Azula

This is straight-up, unadulterated geranium and rose. It's reminiscent of an air freshener or toilet spray because of the synthetic citrus freshness that the geranium lends, which is pretty overwhelming on my skin. Not for me.

Angelica 000

My favourite colour is Purple,& after a dear friend gave me a sample of this, Dark Purple may be my ultimate Signature fragrance! The name is perfect, fabulous swirling streams of perfume, plum & patchouli mouth wateringly sweet & astringent at the same time.Geranium keeps it honest, so it is never cloying. Familiar notes, but it still manages to be mysterious, a unique & delicious perfume.

mymlan

A patch-rose with a really strong geranium note that destroys it for me. I like the idea of a dark, slightly juicy rose, but I'd preferred it a tad sweeter and perhaps without the geranium. This is a bit headache inducing for me. :/

reereetuna

I smell no fruit i smell nothing but wood and mens armpits. Clean armpits but pits nonetheless im wating for the next wave, for the rose orvthe plum to arise. Im trying hard to develop a tatse for oud. Im not hating it. But i dont know uf i could wear it in strong doses

Vlud

This is very good stuff by Montale. A very authentic plum powered up by rose and fruity accords with a deep patchouli that fulfills the creation. A really nice fragrance, pretty versatile too!

Fizzy

Dark Purple smells like rose water together with a lot of aoud wood. Strongly manly scent, smells like unwashed men-armpits in my opinion, but not unpleasantly, that´s the clue. The rose is after 15 minutes gone, the aoudwood stays for the next 12 hours and on the clothes it holds forever. Good quality juice for men.

Houdini4

Oh can I just mention before I start...Other than containing strong rose note this doesn't smell like DSquared Black Potion, that's a smokey incense/woods/and leather affair.
I often say "I'm not the biggest lover of rose..but..." I think I have to face facts I love a good rose fragrance.
Dark purple is one of those! Don't get me wrong I'm still very specific about the way in which the rose is 'delivered' for want of a better word.
Here is comes over with a remarkable clarity but is still not too rosy for my tastes. I think it's the fact that it's very fruity and sweet but with a velvety sensuality and just a hint of darkness.
I really don't see this as particularly 'Dark' or 'dirty' it's quite bright and (wait for it...) jammy!!!
Thick, sticky sweet and jam like roses suits the purple colour perfectly!
The plum note in here is evident but so is a red berry vibe, so prominent it's almost gourmand.
As it settles in there's a hint of musk which balances the fruits and a more delicate base of oud which keeps this going on your skin for hours.
The patchouli comes out in the drydown for me and elevates this scent even further, giving it still more refinement.
I have to say I love Dark purple although I must admit the opening is a beast and projects even a little much for me. It's like many strong niche roses (especially Montale) which makes a huge statement and that to me is not everyday wear. Even for a special occasion you necessarily want to be beaming out a cloud of dense, plummy rose.
I'll forgive it that though it's a brilliant fragrance.

djuzz.becuzz

Dark Purple... my favorite color! But will this fragrance also be a favorite?
Unfortunately not. However, this is a good quality juice!
As it opens, I immediately smell a dark, earthy patchouli combined with tart red berries.
As it dries down on my skin, it doesn't change too much... the patchouli tones down a little bit, but it is obviously present during the entire scent life. Also the tartness of the red berries lingers for long.
The scent gets a little sweeter and a little less sharp as the rose appears, gently touched by a delicate plum note and finally settles on a light woodsy base.
I love sweet and dark fruit-choulies, but they need to be sweet. Dark Purple is unfortunately not sweet enough for me.
Longevity and sillage are great!
♥♥♥

Lana148

I found the opening of this fragrance to be a bit challenging.

Rose-plum-patchouli-geranium-oud combination is too musty and dirty for my liking. After initial opening smell clears of, the fragrance leans toward smelling plumy. Dry-down, surprisingly, is very beautiful, clean rose scent. So, few developing stages, but on the end - Montale's signature rose/oud composition.

Scotti

This is a very intoxicating, dark, sophicated, deep, rich, wet, plump, sweet, and almost gothic type of smell.

When I think the color "DARK PURPLE" translating to a fragrance I automatically think Plums & Patchouli. This has both, but the Plums are the sure star in this fragrance with the volume turned way up.

The best way to describe this fragrance for me is: JAMMY ROSE! Yes It's darker, and rich due to the woody notes, and amber & patchouli, but all in all I get a very deep dark JAMMY ROSE.

Opens with that sweet JAMMY type of Rose. Smells wet-like. Very fresh. The Plum is definitely the main player in this frag; although, most say the Rose is the dominant. I smell more Fruity "JAM" type of Pluminess that is definitely plump, moist, and fresh! Stays pretty linear, but as time goes on the plum dies down a little as the woods/amb/patch come up a little just making it drydown like a rosey-woody smooth ending.

This fragrance would be beautiful on a Gothic woman or.. contrasting; on a suit & tie sophicated man going to an event. I think this is unisex, but I personally was wishing for more patchouli in this. Oh hum; it's still a beautiful scent.

Montale rarely disappoints with performance, and this one is no exception; projection is great for the first 4-5 hours, and longevity is at least 8-10 hours.

Strong, sweet, and bulldozering aroma, very similar to Emporio Armani Diamonds Giorgio Armani for women, as I feel on my skin. There is a warthm of patchouli and tea rose, but some sugary scents make it unbearable to sniff... Quite memorizing fragrance, must say, just not my cup of tea :( expected way more from Dark Purple! Have a full sample if someone is interested in exchange

scented2014

it's a very patchouli dirty rose!..
edit: when patchouli is gone, after about an hour, it turns into a rich seductive rose, indeed!

Dark Purple has got attitude, power and seductiveness. This perfume is a gothic goddess, a sexy, sultry, vampire, ready to pounce. WOW!! This has the X Factor. It's simply amazing, not for the faint hearted and the notes are simply stunning. An olfactory orchestra of drop dead gorgeousness, a head turning vixen, a bird of prey gliding menacingly low.
Juicy plum, sharp and heady geranium, dirty filthy and badly behaved patchouli! This bitch has it all!!
DP is a mega power and silage bomb and longevity is epic!!
WOW just WOW!!!

Jillzilla

This was a real scrubber on my skin chemistry, because the geranium note was so pronounced and so unbelievably sharp. It seems other reviewers aren't having this issue, so I understand it's just me...but the composition is very much out of balance on my skin. One of three Montale fragrances I have had to scrub off so far -- all containing geranium.

Blind bought this and Full Incense and am happy with both. A bit feminine but enjoyable in small doses. Comparable to Tom Ford PJ but more vibrant. I get more plum and berries than anything. Longevity and sillage excellent

This is my favorite Montale perfume together with Roses Musk. I must say that Montale perfume are very strong and very long lasting, which is a great plus point for me.

This one is definitely very fruity especially in the opening. To me it smells like a dark plum. The name of this perfume is just perfect. After it dries down the rose comes out and some warmth from the amber and patchouli, but definitely still sweet. I think it is a very young perfume, something I didnt expect from Montale. But very fun, flirty and sweet. I have received many compliments with this perfume.

Roses and Spices

I looked at this a while ago and the reviews were so good that I decided to try a sample of Montale Dark Purple. I'm not normally a lover of fruity scents but I thought I would give it a go. Initially it smelt cheap and all i could smell was synthetic roses. At dry down it fortunately became a faint smell, not unpleasant, floral and woodsy. Interesting but I was glad I hadn't bought a bottle.

muabanperfume

totally disagree with Nguyen Truong Thai Vu, this dark mysterious rose combo with touch of plum is just stuning. Imagine, you lost in a forest of black roses, a little scare but excited at the same time. This juice is just gorgeous.

Another repetitive release from Montale. Smells like Roses Musk & its relative, this time with a little sour fruit added in the first 15 minutes

CDGfan

This was reformulated this year and it smells vastly watered down and inferior to older bottles of Dark Purple
The plum is there but very faint and there is more of a synthetic alcohol smell ( its not the oud). I tested it out at Bergdoff Goodman, so it was not a bad bottle. Lots of the reviews here are for the older version of Dark Purple, which was a gorgeous fragrance.
9/10 for the old bottle
3/10 for the new formulation

Wow! Amazing. Geranium & plum & rose trio on me. The blend took only acidulous molecules from those three notes, which is absolutely nice since I don`t like sweet smells. No patchouli neither fruit notes, but I don`t have a hump with them for that.
A little hint of amber and teak wood make it just perfect. The staying power is astonishing, around 10 hours on my skin. Stays incredibly long time on clothes. Nice to wear on hot sunny days. For me it`s a fantastic alternative to so-called "fresh" smells for summer. Definitely on my wish list!

esteban747

I know, I'm a guy. But I love Dark Purple.
The first seconds are fruity, sweet, ripe, juice, delicious. Then is a bouquet of roses with some light berry notes.
I just want to eat this!
This is a very feminine fragrance, I get more rose than fruit, I consider (usually) rose as an "old lady" type of scent, but in here the rose is so hypnotic and sensual that is incredible.
If you like rose based fragrances, you will love Dark Purple. And if you don't like roses, you should also try this perfume, because it may surprise you.

UPDATE: I had a few samples of different fragrances ( Ananas Fizz, Mbucuruya, Orange Star), one of them was Dark Purple. I give them to three coworkers, and by far the one fragrance they like it the most is Dark Purple.

DARK PURPLE aka for me dark tuti fruiti fragrance ive been testing this for a while now on first spray i dont get that medicinal aroma that i get from dark or black aoud i get a dark sweetness vibe in your face scent in the middle i do get the combination plum and berry, geranium mixed, with rose as a slightly dominant note. as it dries down the scent is still sweet the rose becomes more prominant with a slight hint of wood, hard to detect and slight amber, the middle notes with the sweetness notes still lingers a little bit. I dont feel the smell of musk but i can detect the amber very faint in the backround on dry down. There is still that black aoud dna in this fragrance as they say with all montales they share a certain dna that its hard to determine what montale your wearing as they share this certain scent in mostly all their frags. definite unisex on this one IMHO. i dont picture anything when i was wearing this one for some reason i just thought of black aoud with the added sweetness to it. I was not blown away by dark purple most likely because ive already smell it before (like i said its that black aoud dna). If this was my fisrt montale i might have been very very excited but none the less a solid release from montale in my book.
longevity 10 plus hours 10/10
sillage heavy not strong as black aoud or dark aoud but respectable for sure you will be noticed 9/10
uniqueness 8/10 might be unique smelling for others but for me not, as ive smelt it before (THAT MONTALE DNA)
overall smell wonderful niche quality for sure 9/10
price vs quality 10/10 montale quality moneys worth very potent juice.
versatility cold weather day or night in my opinion summer nights as well.
i have chocolate greedy by the way im very excited on that one will definitely review it nxt time.

Rose, rose and more rose then a little plum and patchoulli. Definitely one for the ladies or a very bold man. The rose is deep, dark and a bit mysterious; it's as if you put your nose into a fresh cut bouquet of dark red roses complete with deep green leaves and inhaled. Hints of patchoulii, wood and amber poke through the dominant rose note as it dries down. If you love deep dark rose scents, then this one is for you.

Well, here's a perfect example of why I don't trust decanters. They may mean well, but when they acquire their bottles from discounters or ebay, they may or may not contain authentic perfume of the type stated on the bottle.

My sample of Montale DARK PURPLE smells like woodish aromachemicals. I smell no flowers, no fruits, and nothing purple comes within 6000 miles of this scent. Given everyone else's reviews of this perfume, I can only conclude that the liquid inside my vial is of something else entirely. It came from a decanter. I rest my case.

How did this happen? Well, I myself recently purchased and returned, because it seemed to me obviously to be a fake, a bottle of Creed TABAROME. What happens when a decanter receives such a bottle? He or she may or may not recognize that it is a fake. If not, then it will be divvied up into hundreds of tiny samples sold at drastically marked up prices and sure to sow confusion far and wide.

No rating for this one, because it's obviously not DARK PURPLE at all. Just a lesson: caveat emptor! Go direct to the house or licensed retailers for the house if you want to know that the perfume which you are testing is authentic.

Arrogant_Cat

OMG, Dark Purple is heavenly! I don`t even like rose scents, but this is perfection. Gorgeous, grown-up fruity oriental with plum and berries on a bed of fresh rose petals.

The rose is just right here, I recommend this perfume to those looking for a sweet, fruity rose scent, this is definitely not too floral, very well balanced with all the fruits and woody notes.

Top notch longevity and sillage.

It`s been a while since I was this excited about a perfume and I SO need a bottle of this beauty.

EDIT: The more I wear my sample, the more prominent the rose note gets to my nose. It`s not such a fruity-gourmand scent as I initially thought upon the first wearings therefore I no longer want a full bottle of Dark Purple, it`s a bit too much rose for my taste but if someone gifted me this juice I would happily admire my bottle.

As a non-roselover, all I can say, it`s one of the most wonderful, enchanting rose perfumes I have ever had the opportunity to try.

I get the Plum in here, I get the Dark, I get the berries, I get the Orange, Patchouli and flowers. This fragrance in my opinion was impressive and lasted over 11 hours on my skin. I put it on at about 6:15am in the morning Thursday and it was after 5:00pm that it still was going strong. WOW!!

PricklyAndHot

Most of all I feel the patchouli note in this fragrance. No roses, no plum. And not my cup of tea, actually.

Mooniq

Dark! Adult! Sexy! Non-sweet! Plum, Patchouli & woodsy notes. In my opinion a bit uni-sex. Not typical male'ish notes but I tried this one on a friends husband and we all agreed that this one goes great for both women and men - not a young boy - a grown up man. Soft and mild but yet intensive in a good way. This is a hug-scent!

Mörk! Vuxen! Sexig!

I found Dark Purple rather disappointing. I've only sampled a couple Montale fragrances thus far, so I can't speak to how similar it is to others in the line. Nonetheless, this fragrance doesn't justify the niche price tag for me.

This is a basic, sweet-powdery rose perfume with a non-distinct fruity quality. The rose doesn't smell particularly natural - it's a rose that has been soaked in a synthetic musk and loads of sourish-sweet red berries. The result is artificial and cloying. Usually I like plum in fragrances, but I don't get anything that smells like plum here. I was expecting at least a touch of darkness from the patchouli and woods, but I can't make out any trace of woody notes.

I find it along the lines of Stella, although I would choose Stella easily over this fragrance. While they both offer a simple, fruity take on rose, Stella smells like a higher-quality composition and seems better executed overall.

alfarom

It's actually pretty funny how, no matter the notes involved, most of the latest releases by Montale smell incredibly similar. Dark Purple makes no exception.

It opens with the usual strong synthetic woody (oud-y?) signature of way too many compositions in the house's range, this time joined by fruity notes (plums and berries). The initial phase is loud, sweetish, rich and a tad vulgar but, if you're already familiar with this house, this is nothing new. Rose and geranium make their appearance during the middle phase driving the fragrance to the overused ambery-woody-rosey base we've experienced too many times.

With an offering of more than 80 fragrances of which almost 50 smell pretty the same, I think it's about time for a change. Please, give us a break.

I must say I have never received more compliments for wearing a fragrance than when I was wearing this one. This is a very strong rose fragrance and although I love roses in fragrances I do not usually wear a "typical" rose scent. The rose - patchouli - plum combination is very intense, commanding and overpowering and that can be associate with the purple color, yet somehow it is very bright, playful and vivid. Its lasting power and productivity are beyond all I experienced so far. My all time favorite perfume is Midnight Poison by Dior, which also features notes of rose and patchouli, and I love to layer these two but I must admin that Dark Purple takes all the attention in that combination. My recommendations for all those dark rose lovers.

"Aren't the geraniums pretty, Professor?"

Girl, they are to die for!
I've been looking for a good, wearable geranium for some time, since I met Honour for men by Amouage [which is too strong and sharp for me, but I adore putting geranium on the first plan].
And then I met Dark Purple - mix of geranium, not-lethal-rose and tasty sweet plum. Long lasting, pleasant and not tiring, even though it's quite straigth and flat. But the geranium! ;]

bibi101

It's too much, i've had it on for a few hours. But all it gave me was a headache
Luckally i tried a sample and didn't buy a whole bottle instead

timeazsofia

It was a really big surprise to me, because I did not really like the "fruity" fragnances. But this one is the exception. From the first time the patchouli dominated, but there are some other notes, plum and rose they create a beautiful accord, and I love it. :)

Sillage and lasting power both are excellent!

I sprayed a little dab of Black Purple on one of my woolen jacket a few days ago, when I put it on yesterday, I could not help smelling my sleeve wondering what this amazing smell was...it's very strong and sweet at the same time, lasting power is beyong hopes, it's a surprising fragrance, definitely my next purchase, very soothing on chilly falls days.
