Versatile in all season.
Exquisite workmanship with layers. Variant of Diptyque Vetyverio with spiced sandalwood in different direction.
Having difficulty in projection. Period in middle notes are rather short and thin, transition to base notes quickly.
Admire it yet not belongs to mine.

Perhaps something here doesn't agree with my chemistry, because when I spray it on my skin, what wafts around from the sprayer is pretty pleasant. Unfortunately, on my skin, this is incredibly bitter and stale. It's definitely aromatic - the herbaceous part of juniper berry comes forward, but I think maybe it's the iteration of sandalwood that is incredibly mentholy and very sour on my skin. Not sweet at all to me, it feels a little dry and sharp and sour.
Leans masculine, moderate projection.

Starts like a sticky honey and spiced version of Gucci Pour Homme 1. Mid is baby powder with carnation. Dry down is hard wood natural siberian musk and pink pepper. The sticky golden floral heady sweetness is weaved through the whole thing but very delicately. It is delicate but slightly honey sweet with a signature glazed lining to its powdered masculine vibe that dries into a unique musk with the wearers skin. If this is what youre after then try it!

For this Parfume, I just wanna say 3 words.

“Elegant, Classy, Eternal.”

Love it.

This was my signature scent, for a brief time...and then, I ended up selling it. I just began to find the scent irritable, and could never really find an occasion to wear it. I was able to purchase Ormonde Woman (far superior to Ormonde Man) and Nawab of Oudh from the sale of Black Gold. Both of these scents I find easier to wear, and the wafts of beauty I receive throughout the day leave me in a far happier state.

Oily Black Gold. The price of the material grade has been reflected.
It is Ormonde Jayne's most luxurious "heavyweight" fragrance.
The quality of ebony is strong, in fact, it is not easy to do well, don't you see the flood of ebony perfume. No amount of spice can overpower the smell of ebony, and usually just a little bit can be very powerful.
How do perfumers retouch ebony? Use rose and Bergamot.
Of course, the other supporting roles also play a more or less role in modifying the smell of ebony, but they are not as critical as roses. Black Gold continues to develop with the characteristics of Rose Gold.
The starkness of ebony and rose, thanks to cedar and patchouli, resin, vanilla expand the breadth and depth of ebony, enriching the aspect of ebony.
The fatal flaw of ebony is single and unchanged, so it is very important to make up for it by choosing other powerful raw materials. The surrounding elements cannot be as strong as ebony, causing conflict, and floral fragrance is taboo. If you press too many flowers and you can't smell it, you will fail.
With Black Gold, you can not only smell the elements of Fougere and spice, but also have more than three kinds of sufficient floral fragrances, which are fragrant and tempting. In the base notes, musk, amber and other woody elemental bases are still active to stabilize the ebony and help the floral aroma bond.
If some animal incense is added here, it may take away the presence of ebony.
Black Bold is better than it is in its size and its content. Its composure, its introverted, domineering, and luxurious, are all Ormonde Jayne no second.
Gold jewelry is always more dazzling on dark skin.

It is aromatic oriental, woody, male fragrance, rich and powerful. Too bad it's discontinued

-Opens cloyingly strong.
-Masculine blend with a vast range of notes that don't stand out individually.
-It smells like a perfume that's confused and doesn't know what its supposed to be. (-)

outstanding elegant pink pepper

Black Gold has a bright sparkling sweet green citrusy opening that to my nose smells quite similar to Nawab of Oudh, what I get is bright aldehydes and sweet orange/mandarin like citrus note, this opening is immediately followed by a predominant intense aromatic combination of sweet slightly fruity and almost leathery juniper berry along with fresh herbaceous clary sage. I can detect a diffusive floral accord with a spicy touch after some time with fresh rose، spicy carnation and jasmine nuances, I think there is a big dose of hedione in this fragrance. The fragrance then moves to a beautiful woody base consisting mainly of creamy sandalwood, dry virginian cedar with sweet ambery and musky nuances and a chypre accord with Ormonde Jayne signature pink pepper note. I don’t get any oud from this fragrance. Overall, this fragrance is very elegant and sophisticated in my opinion.

Postumo

A complex spicy perfume with Geza's signature all over the place. Intense and juicy citruses with lots of juniper berries, cardamom, nutmeg, pepper... it's a complex spicy accord the blends beautifully with a floral heart where orchids and roses stand out.The spiciness lasts well into the base of the fragrance, a woody base ambery base. Thanks god the oud is not very prominent. I'm tired of this trend of using oud in so many perfumes in a way that kills everything else. Here, in a supporting role, makes sense and allow the rest of the accords shine on their own.

High quality perfume that lasts well but, at the end of the day, not for me. I'll stick to Ormonde Man and Woman.

Good perfume! It took a while to be appreciated. Aromatic and complex.
I like how it changes with time when you wear it.

ILikePeeps

Not crazy about it. Gf liked it though, she said it seems like the type of scent that everybody would like. I seem to pick up mint/menthol, but maybe that's the juniper berries/clary sage doing that to me.

Today I had a good offer on Black Gold. After lots of hesitation, I did recline it.

Black Gold has a really nice opening. This seems to be a trademark of Geza Schoen: Ormonde Man and Nawabh of Oudh also have this bitter, interesting and quite sophisticated opening. I really like this.
But after a while, the bitter top notes dissappear and a quite boring, semi sweet, herbal (medicinal?), oakmossy accord sets in. It just does not fit me. It has no playfulness, no statement, no sexiness. Not masculin as well. Not bad per se, just a bit anonymous/androgynous and "meh".
I wanted to like Black Gold, but came to the conclusion I would not "want" to wear it too often. Too bad!

Edit:
This scent kept intriguing me. The top notes are REALLY good. So in the end I did accept the offer, and I have bought an almost full bottle. I will wear it some more and then make my mind up. :)

This is better than gold...

This is a gem of good perfume making and usage of high quality materials. Pure man aromatic fragrance. A really good one.

It opens with citrus, but not the ones pungent or "floor cleaning product" like by any means, and this together with an intense juniper berry, makes this opening something to die for. If you are not falling in love with this juice within the first 2 minutes... you are smelling other perfume.

With some little touches of spices and beautiful flowers, (this scent has many many components) you get into the base where a breathtaking oak moss and a top-class sandalwood are waiting for you. Complex scent that feels expensive, exclusive and a truly expression of good taste.

This is not laud, but you will get notice, and it lasts, but it doesn't matter, what matters is the feeling it provides you when you are wearing this. You feel good, very good. For dress-up occasions is unbeatable. But be warned... you will want to put this one every single day of the year... (price-tag is high but absolutely worthy, under my honest point of view)

Uniqueness: medium-high

Scent: 10/10

Performance: medium-high

Would I buy it: Yes (already in my collection)

To be openly honest, this one really took me a while to appreciate. First let me start by saying I despise the smell of Orchid. Tom Ford's Black Orchid, and this one. However, if you let it dry down roughly an 30-45 mins. Magic. This is bright and somehow dark, smooth, aromatic, and blended with no rough edges.

Perfect to be dressed up, dressed down, or even lounging around the house. It has quickly become one of my favorites (with the exception of the orchid phase) Quality ingredients, artistically crafted by a man who knows what he is doing. Excellent work

I do feel an obligation to warn you, do not go out in high heat, it'll make you contemplate suicide. it's thick and syruppy and you'll be reaching for the brillo pad in seconds.

Other than my distaste for orchid it's a 5 star fragrance.

kaka brar

Sampled it . Its perfect scent . Very well blended ingredients . Complex enough without any hints of offputting animalics yet sophisticated . Such niche scents are worth my money . A good good scent. Liked it more than OM . Will upgrade to bottle .

In my opinion, the most enigmatic and impressive offering from the house of Ormonde Jayne is this Oriental chypre which is a revelation in lovely layer by layer as it unfolds and evolves on your skin. The multilayered perfume has a traditional chypre opening with aromatic citrusy notes of bergamot, mandarin orange, lemon, sage and juniper berries. This slowly fades to reveal a floral heart which has a central jasmine surrounded by orchid, rose, geranium and water lily. This then fades to a mossy powdery base of oakmoss, sandalwood, sight oud, cloves, pepper, vanilla, cedar and labdanum. The perfume is not loud or screechy given the multitude of notes. It is a unisex perfume very carefully blended with moderate to strong projection and very good longevity. A true experience of quality over quantity this is by no means overrated. It is a real marvel of modern perfumery in the same league of Roja Dove Diaghilev for example. Enjoy!

Saeid Scent

All i can smell is oud, rose, woods and pepper(Spice)...an ordinary oud and rose centered composition.
Considering the price...well...it's a total robbery
Not even worth scoring.
If you are into Rose and Oud fragrances, try Mancera and Montale fragrances...way cheaper with same vibes and quality and same results!
I'm really disappointed with this house.tried 7-8 fragrances from this brand and all are ordinary fragrances which is sad...But Ambre Royal has different story.

mmcdonald36

Stunning, absolutely. It’s like they took Roja Creation E and infused a freshness into it. One of the classiest things i’ve ever smelled. Worth the price, I just can’t afford it

utsavgo

Having Nawab of Oudh already, I would not go for this..This one resembles Nawab a lot..This is a bit softer and smoother..Nawab is a bit spicy..

Liquidasset77

A dynamic burst of freshness from Mandarin is enhanced by an aromatic blend of clary sage and Juniperberry enlivend by a timeless Bergamot accord. Carnation absolute, Jasmine and Oud tie into a woody base with sensuality underscored by a warmth of cedar, opulent sandalwood and pink pepper all while lending themselves to a slightly resinous and Musky Amber accord enhanced By labdanum and Ambrette seed that ensures you will be talked about, admired and desired the same!

As a longtime follower of Ormonde Jayne, BLACK GOLD is my all time favorite creation from Geza Schoen & Linda Pilkington, founder. A true masterpiece, this parfum is For lovers of schinus molle (pink peppercorn), the finest blends of sandalwood, a timeless rose, carnation, jasmine accord woven through with citruses, spices underpinned on a base of vetiver, labdanum & costly ambrette. I wear this in all seasons but best not on really hot days.

b.gracious . . .

If you didn't get a compliment wearing this, the problem is either you or the people with whom you associate. It's not the frag.

b.gracious

Scent - oakmoss, rose, lemon, cedarwood & juniper berries.

Season/Time of Day - I prefer to use this one in the warmer months, day or night.

Projection - I didn't get noticed, I didn't get a compliment.

Longevity - I get 6hrs consistently.

joyjoy

I ordered the 10ml traveler & just received it this morning. I ordered it Thursday & received it this Monday morning-London to CA! OJ always ships super fast! Anyway, I just want to say that I can definitely smell the Oud. Other reviews I've read say they can barely smell any Oud. My initial impression is favorable even though I'm not a big Oud lover. I'll update when I've had a chance to actually wear this for awhile. I'm just smelling it on a strip right now.

Update: This smells quite masculine to me. I don't enjoy wearing it but I think it would smell great on a man.

Jack_Hunter

It starts with some nice lemon citrus and juniper mixed in with some soft spice. The way the juniper mixes in with the citrus and soft spice is very well done and very nice.

After a while the soft Sandalwood appears and makes itself known, I like this phase as the Sandalwood is top quality and very good. Also what makes it smell better is the light amber which seems to underpin the Sandalwood. All in all at this stage it's a very smooth very soft and light citrus and sandalwood scent.

After a good while the scent very slowly seems to gain floral aspects out of the juniper like citrus. Now it's nothing distinct like a straight up jasmine or rose fragrance but more like amalgamation of different floral notes that weave a subtle tapestry within the juniper like citrus. In fact I'm sure I can smell the orchid or it may be a lily note as it's adding a slight watery aspect to the scent. Though it's all very subtle as you would expect from a very ethereal ghost like scent.

Now this fragrance is imo very subtle and tightly weaved with a lot of nuances that can very easily be overlooked unless you are like me over analyzing each stage and aspect. I do like very much the way the floral aspects slowly unfurl out of the juniper citrus. I must say it is very lovely and unexpected and something that can be very easily overlooked as everything is so subtle.

Again after a while the scent slowly shifts and I can smell musk and patchouli but it's not dominating but just rearing it's head from within the sent as the floral aspect weakens. Though eventually it does become stronger and starts to meld with amber note. Now these notes are not a straight transition but like before they appear slowly within other notes before becoming a bit more stronger.

After six sprays from my 10ml decant which only sprays out a little amount I get about six hours in longevity.

In an all it's a very ethereal and light bodied scent hampered with projection issues.

Serendipity1

Why the hell did Linda change the packaging and bottles?! I don't feel like buying her perfumes anymore...
