Vintage Yet Timeless Citrus-Iris-Amber...

Opens with a citrus-amber burst of bergamot, iris & vanilla, and already the Guerlainade is present. Underneath is what smells like opoponax, or seasoned leather-y resins, with something near salt & pepper accents. Alongside there’s a vein of something soapy here, although I'm not sure what it is. The tonka bean in the base isn't what I typically think of as tonka, but it's there, and the vanilla gains momentum the longer it's on the skin, and the longer it's in the bottle. I like this version from the Shalimar range at the moment (although I bounce around as to which one’s my favourite), and I find this works well in spring & fall, although it can be worn year round for vintage yet timeless vibes.

Contrast to Shalimar EDP Guerlain:
Both have the Shalimar & Guerlain DNA, but the EDP has amber, warm-spicy & animalic touches more forward, while the EDT has bergamot, iris & fresh-spicy touches more forward. The EDP wears best in winter, while the EDT is easier to wear year round.

Contrast to Shalimar EDC Guerlain:
Again, both have the Shalimar & Guerlain DNA, but the EDC has a lemon-y citrus-vanilla more forward, while the EDT has bergamot, iris & fresh-spicy touches more forward. Both could be worn year round, but I would be most likely to wear the EDT is spring-fall, and the EDC in summer.

Overall: gorgeous vintage citrus-amber with a timeless feel, and excellent performance. It's a longtime love for me. Enjoy!

This is the kind of perfume you always orbit back to when you are tired of the trends, the chase, and the noises. It is a statue standing in the never-ending crowd; silent, dignified, and full of past details. Some might say this is a timeless creation. I might add that time has made this even better.

LaBelleDamesansMerci

I was surprised when i tried this for the first time. I really thought it was going to be a more typical vintage perfume. Don't get me wrong, i love vintage scents, but a lot of them smell a bit similar. This started of very fresh citrusy and then the leather and incense just attacked me and that's when i fell in love with it. Those notes made it so much more modern and interesting. The perfume got darker in a way. Drydown is very sweet vanilla cozy amber.

wondervalley666

Not as vanilla heavy as the accords listed would have me believe, but the base of this scent reminds me a lot of Mon Guerlain, which I got a few years ago. Where as MG is more lavender-vanilla to me, Shalimar EDT has a different floral blend what comes off a bit less sleepy than Mon Guerlains cozy lavender. I definitely sense white floral/jasmine, a touch of rose. The iris reads more powdery to me. There’s something else I can’t decipher, I guess the nonspecific “floral notes.” I don’t really see this scent as dark or boozy really. It is quite light and fresh and smells a bit soapy to me. It feels like how I want to smell after a shower. It gets a bit more of a vanilla incense vibe in the drydown, which is nice.

Shalimar and Mon Guerlain to me are very pretty classic style French girly perfumes. They don’t reek of patchouli, they aren’t even “vintage” smelling to me. They’re soft and delicate for the loveliest ladies. They give the impression of lightly flowered skin after a nice bath. I picture Joan from Mad Men saying “Shalimar” in her soft sexy whispery voice whenever whenever I see the bottle.

Scent wise, they aren’t the hottest trends at the moment, but they’re classics. I feel like Shalimar is the type of scent I need to wear when visiting Versailles, the scent of walking through an old palace.

Ultimately for the modern girl shopping in 2024, this is a scent that you’d probably rather wear when snuggling on the couch or when having lunch with your family members. It’s a good girl scent. Its clean and soapy but soft, not sharp. It isn’t the sexiest scent to wear to the bar at 12am. It isn’t going to arouse people around you, it isn’t jaw dropping or super memorable. It isn’t a scent you’re going to grab when you’ve put on leather pants or stilettos. It isn’t a stoner girl hippie scent. It isn’t for the Juicy Couture crowd or the niche snobs. It’s the classic scent of silk robes, lace gowns, summer dresses, bows, perfect curls, long eyelashes, powder puffs, lipstick, tea and cookies. It’s not a scent that’s “me” but it’s a fragrance that’s like a fun vacation where I can escape into an alternate life. If I wanted to be Amelie for a day, walk through a flower garden with a baguette, this is what I’d wear.

Vanilla bourbon by the side of a fire place.

Deep, dark vanilla fragrance. Iris adds some powdery femininity, while tonka and sandalwood gives depth. It’s so well blended, I’m amazed by how dark it is and how it still manages to be feminine. The use of tonka bean is not cloying. Similar to Shalimar EdP, yet EdT is a little lighter. It’s more powdery and vanilla is more prominent.

Projects well and one spray lasts all day for me.

Finally wearing this today after keeping an eye out at antique stores for literal years! Everything you could hope for! I don’t have too much to add to what others have said about this masterpiece I’m especially in love with the creamy Iris that adds a bit of levity.

lauanevan

I bought a 2000s mini and i am addicted. It's so unique. The edp gives more grandma-vibe, but this doesn't. It's warm, spicy, smoky gothic, sparkly, juicy, leathery and ageless/timeless/genderless. I also absolutely adore it when I layer it with Siren Songs Elixirs Ghost Kitty -vanilla perfume oil. Ghost Kitty is very sweet, frosty and creamy vanilla. I have a decant of Shalimar Millesime Tonka, but I don't like the vanilla in it, it's too cloying for my taste ( as someone commented "a satanic vanilla bomb"). So I make my own vanilla Shalimar with indie oil. :)
EDIT i take back the granma-comment. Got a edp mini also and actually like it even more XD

brandiwine1980

Finally tried Shalimar tonight. It is so warm and cozy, just a tad sweet with a little spice and such a comforting vanilla. It is like a warm hug and a fragrance of love. I thought this before I even read Heathermarie’s review and I so agree with her. I went on eBay and bought another bottle immediately after sampling, for the first time ever. So simple yet so beautiful. Thank you, Guerlain. I want my future husband to wear this while we cuddle before a warm fireplace. Such a finely crafted unisex scent. No wonder it is one of the most famous perfumes ever. It’s a love.

leahlzander

This review is for a sample from the 1980s (via the Perfumed Court). I had previously tried the EDP and found it tonsil-ticklingly soapy-spicy in a rather harsh but not unpleasant way. I respected the composition but found it too sandpapery to fall in love with. The vintage EDT, on the other hand? This is love. Smooth vanilla bergamot tea, fresh and creamy, playful and sophisticated, unmistakably vintage yet absolutely timeless. I would spend a stupid amount of money to get a full bottle of this stuff.

Detman101

Found the formula for this, attempted to replicate.
Failed...or so I thought.
Went to Sephora and Macys on Saturday...smelled it, nope...I got the mix right...it's just not for me.
Bottled up the test batch and passed it to the ladies at our sister church this past Sunday while visiting.
Definitely not a scent for me...regardless of being Vanilla based.

lenomducauchemar

doesnt smell straight out of 1920s at all. very modern, light, sunny, sweet citrus without darker / vampier anything. i bet this is only a shell of the 1920s thing in case i were to ever see what that was, but thats a guess only

Heathermarie8617

Shalimar has been a favorite of the ladies on my Mother's side for generations and it doesn't stop with me. I had initially tried the EDP but never repurchased after finishing my bottle. Years later I have been wanting to bring it back and decided to give the EDT a try. On initial spray, from what I can recall, EDP and EDT smell the same, however after roughly 30 minutes, EDT fades into what I can best describe as a "fuzzy" bed of flowers (prodominantly Iris and Rose). Underneath the "fuzzy floral bed" is an earthy vanilla that almost comes across similar to the smell of old books (which I LOVE). Maybe it is because I know when Shalimar was created, but this smells how I imagine the 1920's to smell. Regarding comparison to newer fragrance, this gives me similar vibes to Chanel Coromandel (not the same, just SIMILAR). I haven't tried Le Lion, but that one gets compared to Shalimar and I would really like to try myself. But back to Shalimar EDT...I'm in love. Everytime I wear this (including the EDP before), I'm hit with this senses of comfort and because of that, I can't stop reaching for anything else. This fragrance is like a million hugs from the women in my family who wore this before me who are no longer here...extremely comforting.

In short...Shalimar is love.

Side note: My cats seem to like something about this perfume, too. Days I wear this they snuggle up with me significantly more than days I wear other fragrances. They seem to be more inclined to snuggle when I wear Chanel No 5 EDT, as well. Interesting. :)

gedlive

I've been collecting pretty hard for about 7 years now. This is a classic that I finally got my nose on.
I have a vintage, not very old.
I heard men enjoy wearing this. It is a little powdery from the iris I guess.
Yeah it is very nice and enjoyable, not very feminine.
A nice woodiness in the base. Not as much vanilla as I imagined. A little spicy, floral.
Just perfectly blended. Guerlain.
Not much citrus in my vintage. Maybe it's faded.

The vanilla did get more dominant towards the dry down. This is not a linier fragrance. It changes quite nicely. Beautiful dry down.

This is all dry powdery iris and cool citrus on my skin. I am surprised to see vanilla voted as the top note. The only vanilla like scent I pick up I am guessing is from the tonka. Cold and Smokey. This is 💯 unisex IMO. I could absolutely smell and enjoy this on a man. It does read mature to me. I think I would have enjoyed one of the recent flankers with vanilla…for me to LOVE this I need a little more warmth. However I totally appreciate the genius of the DNA here. Last note…I think this perfume is complimented by the cool weather. I don’t see reaching for it in summer or humidity.

EDIT: looking at the EDP notes I think I would LOVE ❤️ that version over the EDT.

capslock92

I've just received recently two bottles of 1970 edt yellow and black label (zebra) and 1960 black beans box. First time when I'm trying Shalimar. Just after the first application on my skin the smell was so familiar with other scent in my collection. The opening reminds me of Le lion the Chanel with the lemon and citrus. Dry down it's in the same ballpark with many out there.
Le lion, ambra aurora, ambre nuit, serge luttens un bois vanille, amber absolute (not smokiness). I'm would jump next on 1940-1950 parfum shalimar. The base of shalimar keeps you in for sure.

SHALIMAR EDT (VINTAGE) formula 80s. As I have said on other occasions, Shalimar has a wonderful structure, it is not for nothing that it is an icon of perfumery.
This old school beauty smells absolutely beautiful in my opinion. It looks similar to the Edp but of course it differs a lot from the current versions.

Here at Shalimar Edt (vintage) we find a lot of wealth in terms of quality of ingredients, this one is denser, more complex, powerful and of great intensity. Also, as expected, the Guerlinade structure is very present.

It opens with a slightly fresh, citric and floral smell (citrus, lemon, bergamot, tangerine) but these chords don't scream loudly, they are there, they are noticeable but in a very subtle way. Fusing from the start with the heavier notes. Guerlain's sumptuous vanilla predominates. This vanilla is not too sweet, but rather resinous, balsamic and even somewhat liqueur. (Tonka bean, benjui, opoponax) a vanilla wrapped in a very powdery cloud (Iris) and incensed with animalic notes. (castoreum) The latter, bringing intensity, richness, warmth and sensuality to the fragrance with well-defined leather nuances, all beautifully balanced. Jasmine, rose together with iris absolute (dusty with woody accents) are the opulence in the majestic heart of this Oriental-floral. Little by little it makes way for a background with warm amber accords, submerged in soft incense smoke. Imparting refinement and depth to the composition.

An absolutely captivating and elegant perfume. A composition in perfect symphony and beautifully presented. Great masterpiece by Jacques Guerlain.

The substantivity on my skin reaches 8/9 hours, although the next day I still perceive the warm and amber smell on my arm. Diffusion is moderate to mild.

Glyph

This is one of those classic perfumes that almost as soon as you smell it, you know why it's so famous. This smells like an absolutely lovely but fairly simple vanilla-resin accord from a distance, but the closer you get, the more greatly complex it becomes, as you begin to make out the opoponax and the other florals and spices. In this way it invites people to get closer to you... especially since it is long-lasting and noticeable, but not overpowering.

What's also so remarkable is how timeless this is, and how gender-neutral it has become. Although it is for many people the reference vanilla, and has resin behind it, it's not that sweet. Men should feel very able to wear this, and I honestly think every masculine fraghead should try it, just as with Mitsouko and Aromatics Elixir (two other classic feminine fragrances that are so perfectly made that you will instantly realize why they're considered references the first time you smell them).

HoneyPamela

I have Shalimar in EDT, reformulated I'm sure, and it just has no lasting power on me. I don't get any vanilla on dry down, only a smoky scent. Such a disappointment for a grand perfume. I might try the EDP or look for a vintage version.

Happyme2009

I have a couple of versions of Shalimar, so naturally, when I saw this one at Shoppers for $150 plus tax for a 90ml bottle I wanted it. I am disappointed. The bottle is stunning, like all other Shalimars. The smell is strong. It starts beautiful, with a hint of bergamot. Unfortunately, that dissipates quickly, and I am left with something resembling smoke mixed with vanilla and rubber. It has zero sweetness, and it reminds me of the vintage edp, but lacking the smoothness. hence it becomes slightly nauseating. I actually regret buying it, because I don't see myself reaching for it often. I will try to layer it with something else, to take away the sharp edges... Silage and lasting power are above average for an edit for sure.

emilia123

this one is VERY mature to me

CurlGurl

I prefer the EDP personally. This does smell like a lighter version of the EDP without the punchy leather, civet, incense, and dried oranges. Now, it's still Beautiful. Very dominant iris note. It's relaxing rather than the shock of the EDP. The EDT is much more crowd pleasing and safer. I'd wear this one to church or dinner with the girls. It's lightly vintage, so it's not sexy to the modern nose. Very proper, sophisticated, classy.

Plachr

If there is one fragrance that really doesn’t need another review it is Shalimar. If you are a fragrance enthusiast you already know that you need to try this one — it is the reference scent in the ‘oriental’ genre and therefore totally iconic. You’ll also know that having tried it there is a very good chance that you’ll fall totally in love with it.

You really don’t have to make any effort — if she wants to captivate you she will. Deep and dark, rich and smoky— if you have ever loved an ‘oriental’ fragrance (eg., Black Opium) you will almost certainly love Shalimar. And if you love vanilla it’s all over. She’s been captivating people for nigh on 100 years and no signs of slowing down.

Anyway you know you have to try it. Just be aware there is a potential life-long obsession ahead of you :)

heasson

Tried it today and I smell like a vanilla dipped, salty mermaid. Gorgeous!

CrazyCrab

I started with the EDP and that was a big fat no. The opening notes reminded me of going to work with my mum when she was still working on the wards in hospital back in the day. Hospitals don't smell like that any more, I think it was maybe the disinfectant they used on the floors? So anyway, I followed on with the EDT and this is the version for me to love.

The EDT still has hints of the hospital smell at the start but for the majority it smells like a wonderfully glamorous baby powder with added bergamot and vanilla, not particularly sweet. I adore it. Totally unisex by today's standards and I'd be so intrigued to smell it on a man.

I haven't noticed this on many other people at all so I have no reference point to consider whether or not it's dated. BUT. I went perfume shopping with my much younger cousin (17 years younger to be precise, and I'm not yet quite touching my autumn years) and of everything we smelled, recent releases included, this is the one she bought.

Mashaismary

If you are looking for something sweet like Mon Guerlain, look elsewhere. I was hoping to find a vanilla iris grail here, but unfortunately, this perfume is not for me. To me, it smells very rosy and resinous and very vintagey. Vanilla is barely there. Then again I prefer my perfumes softer and gourmand-leaning.

PeacefulSunshine

This is lovely. Sensual yet lovely. The colors in my head are a fuzzy cloud of orange, yellow, and purple. I kind of wish the vanilla was toned down as I feel like it washes over the other scents. This is still beautiful, though. I feel like it's almost impossible to not like this one. This is one that will always get compliments and never haters. :)

Korra13

Shalimar EDT is indeed a magical scent. It is airy, light and powdery. It has an ethereal quality. The vanilla and iris are soft and beautiful. I haven’t smelled the cologne or the EDP so I can’t compare them but this is great as a stand alone

purplenoon

Shalimar reminds me of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in terms of how many flankers (and versions of those flankers) there are, and as I was itching to try them out, I thought I’d start with the readily available EDT.

The typical citrusy “Guerlinade” accord is detectable in the opening before itr is replaced by a baby powder scent. If I was forced to describe this scent in terms of notes, I’d call it a vanillic iris, but what it *really* reminded me of was Johnson’s baby powder. Indeed if it wasn’t for the citrusy opening and the ever-so-slightly animalic drydown, I’d call Shalimar EDT a Johnson’s baby powder solinote scent.

I can totally see the appeal of Shalimar. That said, the EDT feels like a “demo” scent, as if it’s a raw idea just waiting to be rounded out by more notes; this is why I am so excited to try out its flankers. Speaking solely of the EDT, if I was to invest in a powdery perfume I’d opt instead for a fragrance from Prada’s Infusion line, Infusion d’Amande being my favorite; but those purchasing Shalimar EDT will surely be impressed by its impressive sillage and performance. Ultimately, the visual this mainstay inspired in me was that of Mae West handling a bottle of baby powder, or of Marquise de Merteuil masking years of scheming and sexual excess with a ton of talc.

soso.sofia

Guerlain being one of the perfumes houses I most adore, and knowing that Shalimar is such a classic (and may I add, my goodness, such a stunning bottle), it annoys me that I just can't do Shalimar. Its vanilla reacts on me too heavy. There's something animalic about it that I just can't handle.

Lavagirl66

The initial opening presents with a potent blast of leather and bandages but if you only wait a few minutes, perhaps 3-10, the dry down is a comforting iris and subtle vanilla baby powder scent that transcends any era. In fact, the dry leathery note is reminiscent of Jo Malone's very contemporary Myrrh and Tonka. It is indeed a signature scent and can be worn any season, anywhere, day or evening, in my opinion. This is indeed a classic that deserves to be in any fragrance collector's collection.

TexasTuberose

The reviews about Shalimar are super-poetic and almost better than the fragrance. It is very serious and very romantic.
So Shalimar was the immense, exquisite, fragrant garden Shah Jahan created for his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. I imagine their love changed and matured as their life together evolved- much like the perfume does, without ever losing its complexity.

It is stunning and not for the faint of heart. There is a note which is a little like plastic or rubber, which I don't care for, but it just such an interesting perfume I can deal with that.

fernprairie

It is a beautiful warm blanket of iris, incensy amber, and extremely delicate citrus. It’s so odd that such fresh notes create such a warming concoction but nonetheless they do! Definitely not a blind buy as it is by no means a modern fragrance, BUT if you do like it yet worry that others might not, the EDT has a rather intimate sillage so you can wear it as more of a personal experience. I would love for this to beam off me so maybe once I’m done with my bottle of EDT i’ll check out the EDP. A beautiful fragrance that smells just as rich as it’s history.

Edit: after many, many sprays, I have some more thoughts, as time has gone on I like it more and more alas the EDT has some problems. I had previously restrained from wearing it as anything other than a night scent as I felt it was too feminine and mature for a 19 year old boy ALAS once I started wearing it out I quickly realized just how weak it is. In an air conditioned house you catch whiffs of it for hours, but when you wear it out it only lasts around two hours before it’s completely gone, even from your clothes.
My desire to move on to the EDP gives me an excuse to spray massive amounts of my current 3.4 oz bottle so that is always a plus!

LaContessina

....100 years (in 2025) and still going strong.
Seems like it was created yesterday.
When they did this, some state of bliss must have pervaded the creator, because he guessed a certain taste, pinpointed a successful likeability that lasted 100 years and overcame fashions, decades, eras, trends .. you name it.

A timeless masterpiece, very modern, very wearable. Feminine but not overtly so, for sure elegant, seductive, and cozy.

I have both formulations (edp and edt) and love both; i wear the edt when i am surrounded by other people and don't want to be too present with my scent, or in Summer; the edp is always noticed and complimented, it's stronger more leathery and more pronounced spicy vanilla.

toosimilar

Go for EDT!
EDP is something really different and more citrusy.
This one is fantastic! I can see that many men are using Shalimar:)
To me it's completely feminine one, but I can believe it may sit nicely on guys too:)
I'd describe this one as the most expensive aroma sticks at some posh place :)))
Smoky, sweet and soft :) Great one!

CoCo77

UPDATE: Tested eau de parfum version (see my review) . . . much better performance!
* * *
I've always loved this classic powdery, floral, vanilla fragrance. I've tested the eau de toilette and find it too weak. Hope to test the eau de parfum and perhaps buy a bottle. Shalimar does remind of Coty's Emeraude in its sweetness and powderiness, evoking memories of my mother, whose signature fragrance was Emeraude.✿

Current formulation's longevity on me: weak to moderate
Scent family: Amber

Shalimar EDT was my grandmas signature and since she passed away last year, I haven’t been able to wear ANY Shalimar. I have a vintage bottle of the EDT that today, I finally felt like wearing. while it reminds me of my grandma, it doesn’t make me sad. Basically, the EDT is a lighter more wearable version of Shalimar without the heavy leather. If you don’t like the leather in the EDP, you might like this, if you do love the leather (like me) you’ll miss it greatly. Any version of Shalimar beats anything else in a bottle though especially vintage!

apfelix13

This is definitely a masterpiece! I must confess it was not love at first sight though. The first spray is very strong and not amazing on my skin to be honest. Well, after it settles I love it! Very beautiful. I wouldn’t blind buy it, unless you want to have this classic perfume in your collection. The bottle is gorgeous!

Carissaochoa

I love the unsweetened dirty vanilla of this right now, as I find it a great transition into Fall, while it is still very warm during the day here in the desert. It is light enough to withstand the warmth of the desert air, yet the smoky vanilla leans into Fall. It is not heavy, cloying or headache inducing in anyway; it is an arid, dry vanilla. Slightly powdery. Not a confectioner’s sugary powdery vanilla and not cigarette smokey either. Soft wafts of vanilla incense burning and dancing in the warm, dry breeze.
I find the EDT very easy to wear and a great way to introduce yourself to Shalimar. Years ago, I tried the EDP and immediately said never. I did not have the patience for her. I bought Initial L’Eau instead, which has been hidden in the back of my drawer, until recently. Game changer. Although she is sweeter and slightly reminiscent of Coco Mademoiselle, I knew I needed to dive head first into the rabbit hole of Shalimar Wonderland and develop a rather unhealthy obsession for her and her brood.
Shalimar is truly special and addicting. I honestly feel I am transported to another life and time wearing this. Classic and timeless. If you have a hard time with the EDP, try the EDT. She is stunning.

Thisismesofia

I got lucky and got the 100ml vintage version in a old gorgeous bottle and what can I say : it’s heavenly ! It reminds me a lot of « eau de shalimar » which I have also , it’s like a creamy vanilla citrusy meringue pie with hints of spices I can’t believe how good it smells , i only hope the last version is as good as the old one for the future but I will cherish every drop of it

Josu01

Shalimar EdT is a guilty pleasure for me (I'm a guy).

My skin chemistry definitely does something great with Shalimar, and the drydown is just amazing.

A true classic. Big love for me, specially in cooler weather.

chrisk252

Beautiful scent for a mature woman during brisk winter nights. I can see why it is considered a classic and much loved. Classical, opulent, sophisticated, rich, iris, violet, rose, satin sheen, natural, hints of leather, 40s+ feminine, colder brisk weather. I can see the lavender like tang somebody below mentioned. Not for me (male, middle age) but I definitely appreciate it.

Scent: 7.5 / Sillage: 7 / Longevity: 7.5

Franci90

Shalimar EdT represents a less intimidating starting for who is approaching for the first time to the faboulous and magic shalimar world. The supposedly most intimidating aspects of the EdT (the very bitter bergamot opening is arier, less smokey, animal notes are barely delectable) are in fact downsized here. So, if you can't stand smokey animalic facet of EdP, this worth a try. However, if you don't have any issue with those features, I'd suggest to choose the EdP. EdT is still, by all means, stunning comoposition, a real masterpiece, but EdP is somehow magic. It had really cast a spell on me some time ago, so it is my Shalimar.

hettymcsweaty

My first Guerlain! I bought the EdT at a mall kiosk because it was cheaper than the EdP. It cost me ~$50. It smells like incense, according to a nurse at one of my doctor's appointments I went to when I wore it out. It's a nice fragrance, and definitely has a fully-body presence to it. Unfortunately--or, maybe this is a good thing--the sillage is weak, being an EdT, so you have to be very close for the scent to have an external effect on other people. In other words, it's a tasteful fragrance to wear out in public that won't offend people too much (whereas you might not want to wear an EdP at a formal dinner).

Anne1980

I just blind bought this today, and I'm happy with my decision. I've only tested the perfume version before, which has an opening and middle that (in my opinion) one just has to endure to get to the lovely vanilla dry-down. The Toilette version has a sharp opening note that disappears quickly, and then it's just lovely the entire time. I get soft, powdery, slightly citrus, vanilla tones. Some people call this an "old lady" perfume, which is usually a hint that I'll like it. The perfume that ladies wore in times past were bold, daring, unique, and glamorous. I definitely think that Shalimar is all of these things, but the Toilette is a little more refined than the perfume. I'm excited to try the cologne and extrait someday.

HYLAS

This fragrance opens with a burst of fresh lemon coupled with a vintage floral almost lavender-like tang, drying down to a very powdery base (think lemon-flavoured Turkish delight dipped in baby powder). While the underlying vanilla sweetness is in itself quite pretty, there is something astringent to the scent that renders the entire composition rather sickly.

I could definitely see this as being a popular choice around the time of its conception and in the subsequent few decades. It has a very vintage feel, though to me this conjures up imagery of antique shops and pre-loved belongings over bygone opulence.

Selfscentred

The other day I was celebrating my birthday with a few of my best friends at a wine bar. I was wearing Shalimar as a contrast to my clothing that was all douce corals that day. On my way home I was stopped twice and asked what I was wearing. First time by an older gentleman, wearing a tailored suit and a butterfly adorned with sequins. I complimented his outfit (as he did mine) and he then asked me what perfume I was wearing, since he had smelled it as I sat next to him on the train. I told him it was Shalimar and he lightened up and said that he did think it was familar. His oldest sister, who was long gone, had been wearing Shalimar all her adult life. He loved it and always wanted to buy it for his wife, but eventually didn’t because it was his sister’s signature. Now the wife had passed away too and he regretted not having bought it for her anyways. I asked him if there wasn’t someone else significant, he could perhaps gift it to and once again he lightened up. He would buy it for his daughter, who he knew loved perfumes as well. I told him it sounded like an amazing idea, somehow honouring all three of them - his sister, his wife and his daughter. He thanked me and went in to the evening with a huge smile on his face. Just 15 minutes later a young all denim-clad girl queing right behind me at the grocery store wanted to know what was that fab perfume I was wearing. I told her it was Shalimar and she asked where to buy it. Her birthday was coming up too, so she would put it on her wish list. I wasn’t surprised that the older gentleman both knew and loved it, but a little that the young girl wanted it too. But my faith was restored after a fantastic afternoon with some of my besties and I promised myself to wear my Shalimars more often as they are indeed still stunning.

I bought a sample of this years ago, found it offensive and forgot about it until today I found the sample and oh my god!!! its so pretty!!! I don't know what was on my mind when I thought that it smelled like an old ladys house

Marjolein_deud

I sooo wanted to last it longer! Longevity is very, very poor on my skin. So, I thought, maybe the Shalimar bodylotion as a base will give the eau de toilette its spice and this beauty will sit longer...unfortunately that's not the case for me. Lovely scent but a very, VERY, poor Longevity and sillage! I also have the Shalimar Philtre, that stays much longer up close and personal, but its there! I think I will try the Shalimar Parfum next time. Who doesn't love Shalimar!

This is the OG "Fucking Fabulous" in a bottle. That lemon-leather-vanilla combo is genuinely a chef's kiss of a fragrance! 😘

swinshu

I’m honestly not sure what to feel about this. On some sniffs, it smells like a heady incense with a touch of smoky vanilla. On other sniffs, it smells like a vanilla-scented barn…

Compostflower

At first I got straight up baby wipes / baby powder and was turned way off. Then it turned into a smoky almost dirty vanilla incense scent. I primarily went for this because of its history and my favorite artist Frida used to wear it in addition to the incense scent. I’m in my twenties and I approve of this. A lot of perfumes turn milky on me and almost caramel like so it was no surprise this did develop into a slight creamy scent. However it has enough personality and a little bit of spice so I like it. I also get a slight burnt marshmallow vibe and I’m living for that!

Distantspring

I've reviewed a number of Shalimar flankers here on Fragrantica but have yet to review the original - I suppose because all words are superfluous at this level of greatness. One possibly little-known fact is that Benazir Bhutto, late Prime Minister of Pakistan, gave a bottle of this scent to her father Zulfikar Ali Bhutto whilst he was a political prisoner and awaited execution. It was his favourite and he had worn it all his life, and he wanted it to accompany him at the very end. Indeed, there is no occasion for which this scent can't be a faithful companion!
Shalimar exemplifies the concept of a fragrance pyramid - it smells strongly of aromatic bergamot in the opening (and even causes a tingle on my skin from the concentrated citrus). This, gradually, yields to a vanillic (ethyl-vanillin) base replete with sweet resin, incense, leather, animalics and powdery iris. Words don't do it justice though, because it is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts, it comes together to create a whole other world of untold possibility. It is a journey, it is a philosophy, it is a weapon of mass destruction. You're lying in the Indian evening heat, with patterned fabrics draped across the ceiling and windows as everything that smells good when lit - burns.
Briefly, I'll offer that I prefer the EDT to the EDP - the EDT has a slightly gentler bergamot, and the base is more civet-rich. The EDP (which is also beautiful and an obvious 10/10) is stronger (unsurprisingly) and has a leathery quality to the dry-down, with less prickly civet.
Desert winds blow dust about the temple.

Finally got this iconic perfume in Sydney almost a month ago by accident. Couldn't believe I bought this since here in my country, it's no longer available. I was able to test this one on my skin and what I remembered was the awful opening. Sharp citrus! I didn't wait for it to settle down and I immediately washed it off. BUT! When I went to Sydney, I came across a store and I was surprised that it's available, together with the EDP, Jicky and many other Guerlain perfumes. I bought it right away thinking I should give this one a chance. It's autumn that time and when I finally sprayed it on my skin, the sharp citrus hit my nose as if I was punched. Lol. But this time, since its cold, I noticed that it behaved quietly, slowly evolving into a nice, cozy vanilla scent. Not too sweet which I like very much. Sometimes it smells powdery, sometimes leathery, sometimes the Jasmine edges. I'm amazed by this perfume because for me, it literally evolves on my skin and even on clothes. I'm a man btw so I can say this one can easily be worn by men. For me, it smells like a scented lotion and lotion is genderless so anyone can use it, hence, same with this perfume. Don't be afraid to try this one. With regards to how vintage this is, I can say, yes there is, but still can go along with the modern perfumery if not can still give an edge to the new ones. Hopefully, I can buy the EDP version but for me EDT is the most versatile.

Shalimar eau de toilette is a dream

violet violin

I can’t believe I haven’t reviewed this already- I felt compelled to as I am wearing it today for probably the last time this year, or well maybe not again for many months until late fall/winter.
It’s a very chilly spring day, wind gusts making it feel colder than the mid 50’s the thermometer is reading at.
I want that cozy feeling one last time, though I’m ready for spring to actually really… spring!
That’s what Shalimar EDT is made for. When you want to feel cozy.
It’s soft, powdery, slightly citrus, slightly smoky. I know people equate Shalimar with “sexy”, I don’t think so. I think it’s calming, cozy and sensual and intimate more than loud and sexy.
I can see a man wearing this and with the right body chemistry would smell amazing.
I’ve had people who do not know fragrance at all (hence do not know the smell of Shalimar) ask me what I’m wearing and they are shocked to hear Shalimar. These people know the name, know that it’s an “old” perfume, but just do not expect this to smell this way.
People want to snuggle up and nuzzle your neck lol.
So I will enjoy my last day for awhile with Shalimar EDT today. I’m looking forward to the wind carrying the soft scent behind me.

I want to like this iconic fragrance but I can't. Do not smell the citrus nor the flowers at all but instead detect a "smokey" smell? Very strong and pungent. Smell vanilla, incense and the amber in the dry down but just too strong for me, very unique.

simetra23

@prickel: I believe a lot of us had the same very first impression. Give it time and I am sure you will come to appreciate this fragrance :)

It is hard to write anything new about the bona fide classic that is Shalimar, but it is such an important part of perfume history that I must try. Second only to Chanel No. 5 as the most iconic perfume of all (and that is contentious), Shalimar is the original modern oriental fragrance, and in my opinion, the best. Its groundbreaking use of vanilla paved the way for countless oriental and otherwise vanilla-centric perfumes throughout the twentieth century, and it is still utterly relevant today. It is fittingly housed in a beautiful and truly iconic bottle. I have several vintage miniatures in multiple concentrations, and my EDT dates from the noughties. However, having smelled a recent formulation, Shalimar has not been a victim of reformulation to same extent as other current versions of classic Guerlain scents. Perhaps this is simply due to it not being reliant on now-restricted ingredients (e.g. Mitsouko's oakmoss, Samsara's sandalwood). A thirtysomething French woman I know keeps Shalimar EDT in pride of place on her dressing table, citing it as the ideal concentration for modern use - "light and not too much". As someone who almost exclusively buys EDP where possible, I am inclined to agree - it is a more wearable, less opulent version of the French classic. Given the nature of Shalimar - a vintage-style, rich, spicy vanilla-amber oriental - the EDT performance is still good. However, being a Shalimar fan, I cherish my EDP and parfum concentrations too.

Shalimar opens with fresh, juicy citrus notes, perfectly preserved. Tart bergamot and bright lemon give Shalimar its bright opening, before spicy notes and powdery florals creep in. Clean, heady jasmine and powdery rose form the heart, with some powdery iris rounding out the bouquet after a little while. The early presence of vanilla rounds out Shalimar at this stage, forming the famed Guerlinade accord, completed by the emergence of the softly spicy tonka bean note after a little while. Shalimar's use of vanilla is second to none - smooth, rich, giving just the right amount of sweetness, and tying everything together perfectly (standing in stark contrast to modern gourmands that rely heavily on sugary vanillin).

The drydown is spicy-sweet and amber-like, but lighter and less ambery than in stronger concentrations, with the smooth vanilla taking centre stage. Sillage and longevity are moderate. I tend to reach for Shalimar in autumn/winter, being a warm, ambery scent.

A slightly muted version of a timeless classic without compromising on composition, Shalimar EDT is ideal for daytime use, and is perhaps more palatable for modern tastes. 5/5.

Literally one of thee most beautiful scents ever created. No one does vanilla like Guerlain, especially shalimar vanilla! There is a reason why this is still being created 100 years later. It is absolutely divine.
However....... Does anyone else get a hospital disanfectant type smell with this on first 30 mins? Because of this, Eau de Shalimar is my favourite of the shalimar flankers. Same gorgeous vanilla with a touch of citrus. Exquisite. That doesn't mean I don't like EDT, I do, very much, but I just can't get past that hospital smell. Weird.

Perfume Beginners

I tried Shalimar edp a few years ago but it smells awkward to a beginner's nose. Now after smelling hundreds of fragrances I want to try it again and appreciate this timeless classic. As reviews said edt is very similar to edp but in a lighter version, I decided to blind buy it to add this pretty bottle into my collection.

I put one spray on my wrist and the opening is a weird fresh woody scent, smelling alike to patchouli, which is a note I dislike. Suddenly I recalled the scent memory that when I first smelled the edp, there was a same opening but much stronger, which made me reluctant to test it anymore. I guessed it may be the bergamot plus some floral notes after looking at the ingredient list on fragrantica.

Luckily, the opening passed in 5 minutes and that's when the vanilla started to shout out. I always wonder when youtubers categorised Shalimar into vanilla perfumes as I didn't smell a hint of warm cosy vanilla in the fragrance. Now I totally understand. In the past I was scared away by its opening and therefore missed its transformation. The fresh woody scent faded into the vanilla and added some depth and complexity to it. It is much more complicated than the normal warm sweet market-type vanilla but as a untrained nose I am not able to distinguish the notes as they are so well blended. The middle notes are very quiet and almost unnoticeable. To me it feels like the scent jumped directly from the top notes to the base notes. I am not sure how long the vanilla will last and whether it would remain the same until the end, but I enjoy the vanilla very much though I would say I like it rather than I love it.

The projection of the first 15 minutes is enormous. I can smell it within arm length even I just put one spray on my wrist. Concerning this is an edt and I only put one spray, its projection is very nice and others are definitely able to smell it if you spray on both wrists and shoulder. I am unsure about its longevity yet since this is the first time I tried after unboxing. Overall, this is a successful blind buy.

Cessarine

I absolutely wanted to love this but I’m not a fan. Opens like antiseptic, a bit TCP, strong, sickly, overpowering. Settles down, then has similarities to Obsession (which I absolutely loathe). Smells quite nice on my skin after 4-5 hours but the opening is just not pleasant with my chemistry. Such a shame as I am a Guerlain fan 😩

rosetinteddream

I have a vintage 80s bottle of this. I think it’s early 80s, it’s not like the classic bottles shown in the photo. Much more simple, and with a brown cap with a gold line at the bottom.

But it’s looooovelyyyy! It has taken me months to get into this. I’m snowed in at home and have been between a green scent to help me do stuff around my apartment, and cozy scents cause I’m snowed in and wanna be cozy haha.

The love first started with a sample of Chanel’s Le Lion. It reminded me of something, and I couldn’t figure it out for about 10 minutes and then it hit me...Shalimar, but smokier.

I’m giving it more love and now it’s rewarding me with love. This is so nice! It’s solid and present without being overbearing. I get some citrus in the beginning and if I hold my nose to my skin I can still get a little bit of it. But mostly that smoky vanilla with a little tonka and floral nuance.

Is the EDP all that different? Does the EDT really not have all those resins and animal secretions that the EDP has? I’ll try it sometime, but being as my love affair with Shalimar EDT has begun...I’m happy with what I have.

Btw, I’m a man and I will be rocking this with some sweaters! Wear whatever you like. Some days I’m more masculine and want the likes of Antaeus or Égoïste, and some days I’m more femme leaning and stuff like this, Opium, and no 5 call to me. Don’t limit yourself. ♥️

I am becoming a Shalimar addict. After I bought the most recent Millesime Vanilla Planifolia flanker, sadly impossible to find anymore, I HAD to try more Shalimars. I was not touching the EDP because when I had it years ago I could not tolerate its “gasoline” note. So I blind bought the EDT based on the reviews here. And I am glad I did. I am falling in love with EDT more and more every day and am no longer terrified of running out of MVP.

The key difference in EDT, compared to MVP, is the loud and bright bergamot top note and a lot less vanilla in the top and middle. The vanilla that shows up full force in the dry down is very similar to the vanilla in MVP, you just need to wait for it.

I also sense some of that “gasoline” from the OG Shalimar, but it is very much subdued and actually makes the EDT special and memorable. I don’t mind it here at all!

If Shalimar EDP was too much for you, EDT may be a better place to start your Shalimar journey.

Green.colver

And just like that, after 5 years of owning this one, now I like it! It must be because now it's winter but It must be more than weather... I spray Shalimar Edt on skin and immediatly I put on a cosy wool jumper and it works magic. I smell warm vanilla, creamy amber and bergamot. I can fell that benzoin like note, that burnt Rubber note but not for too long. I think it works very good on clothes. Surprisingly I like it better than Shalimar Souffle de Parfum

MabelSyrup

I love so many of the notes. It's been around for almost 100 years. It's been declared a masterpiece. So why don't I like it? There is something in the heart of Shalimar that I also get from L'Air Du Temps and even some men's aftershaves that I absolutely loathe. It's a little spicy, but mostly just reads as "old." I though it was carnation or cloves, but don't see either listed in Shalimar's notes. Is it the rose? Maybe I just don't "get" Guerlain, as I also found L'Heure Bleue disappointing. Like with LHB, I appreciate Shalimar's role in fragrance history, and as a fan of warm, spicy, vanillic fragrances, I owe it a debt of gratitude. But I feel like a reanimated corpse about to crumble into dust when I put it on. All that said, there are dozens of concentrations and flankers. Did I just choose the wrong one? What's the best, truest Shalimar?

shenamedel

Shalimar Eau De Toilette is airier & lasts on my skin for 3-4 hours & wears very close to the skin from start to finish, & has a very bitter & astringent smell. There is no powder or vanilla that I can smell. & the EDP Is extremely close in scent to the EDT, but it only lasted about 10 minutes & then no scent was detectable on my skin at all. Moshino Moshino is a way better & full bodied amber fragrance that has a distinct presence & lasts longer, wears well, & smells like a stronger version of what Shalimar EDT & EDP is attempting to be, from the type of astringent amber that I am getting here. All were blind buys, including Moshino Moshino & I got it, based on reading a review from a Fragrantica Editor singing Its' praises. So Thank You Very Much! I originally wanted to get the Shalimar EDT & EDP because my Mom used to wear it. I remember that scent as a strong veil of muted & cold unsweetened vanilla & sandalwood powder. It had poise & presence, but no warmth, & yet it was also soothing. It was very formal & proper & much too well mannered for me to ever love it or want it for myself. It suited my Mom just right, & I loved that for her & respected that as my Mom's fragrance. & It must have gotten my Dad's okay, as well, because he had allergies. But that Shalimar from the 1960's-1970's is Completely Different from the EDT & EDP that I just bought from a reputable online discounter site & both of the bottles were refills meant to be encased in chargers.

Ok look, I bought a 30mL of this legendary fragrance because every reviewer keeps praising it and calling it unisex. I was expecting a nice sweet vanilla and florals suitable for both gender. However this is straight up baby powder if someone accidentally spilled some booze on it. It does improves slightly on the drydown, but it still smells like my grandma, and not in a good way. Another image it conjures is when I opened my mother's wardrobe, filled with old dresses that no longer fits but she kept just in case she ever go back to her weight 40 years ago, dashed hope, and broken dreams, all languishing amongst ever present mothballs (naphthalene) - the words "musty" comes to mind. Recommended for ladies 40+
I wonder if the EDP is any different?

ms_sarah1484

This is powdery with a light sweetness. A very feminine and grown up fragrance. It opens with a beautiful citrus note and flowers, but doesn’t take long to develop like the EDP does. It gets straight to the point without being overbearing. It’s amazing any time of the year or day. I tend to wear this to bed, because it’s comforting. This is for anyone who has a hard time with the EDP. This one maybe more your speed.

gentel

The vanilla is phenomenal, extremely deep like when vanilla ice cream has actual vanilla bean flakes rather than just being white-colored. Guerlain's marketing talks a lot about their vanilla and while I recommend being skeptical of marketing, this lives up to all the hype.

Really only the vanilla and tonka make an impact, I barely notice the florals at all and the bergamot is pretty much gone after a couple minutes. But the vanilla-heavy base that endures smells great and that's what matters most

jrmoncada

After first 10 minutes is Such a beautiful summer fragrance for men!!!

IamdrinkingBeer

If i find a girl that wears this, i will try to make her my wife. Made a 100 years ago, and this is still one of the best women's perfumes ever. All you need to know about this masterpiece

I have tested the Souffle version before and remember liking it but never have tried the original. So after months of consideration finally decided to see what the fuss is all about. Just a few days ago bought the eau De toilet . Initially didn't liked it at all! Until the very drydown ... some hours later ...and I was absolutely hooked! It is actually addictive! Then I kept spraying cause I couldn't get enough of it. A week later ,I don't mind the top notes , absolutely hate the middle (smells like onion on my skin) guess is the iris, which I very much dislike in general.I saw some people call it petrol, jet fuel phase.. fair enough!! so if anyone knows any of the other versions not having iris or that smell, please let me know 😊 This is current version de toilet, maybe vintage is different.

Jolie_Cherie

I've been in love with this fragrance since last December. It was first recommended to me by my Grandmother who recalled the fragrance as I mentioned to her that I was searching for a new scent to try. She told me that it reminded her of Italy, and when she went to the opera with my Grandfather. A part of me was a bit skeptical at first, but as soon as I tried it, I was in love. It was a big hit with my Grandfather as well, who recognized the scent as well. I very much recommend Shalimar. Its scent lasts throughout the day- and its memory lasts generations.

Shalimar EDT makes me think of a cold night in the desert with warm winds and a fire ablaze, you’re wearing a cashmere scarf with a pair of earrings that jingle a bit - oh so alluring. A type of sexiness that is untouchable but it lingers around which makes you simply want it more.

AlaskanAngel

This scent triggered my memory so hard that I had to make an account just to review it. The opening of this fragrance instantly made me feel sick and thrust me back into the childhood illness of chickenpox as it smells exactly like the pink liquid my mother dotted on each blister to, "help with the itching." I googled to find the topical medicine's name, "calamine lotion." I don't see any shared ingredients (naturally) but the smell is shockingly similar.

Kuldeep S

It has the same undertone of almond like smell which I also find in Boucheron Jaipur, Habit rouge, black orchid Parfum (though richer in black orchid). It also gives hint of Pinaud clubman , an old school aftershave. If you can wear Boucheron Jaipur, you can easily pull it off.Bottle shape of Jaipur and Shalimar are also similar. I think Jaipur took its concept from this legendary perfume.

ShyCassy

This was a blind purchase. I read here about Shalimar in general, and due to cost I decided on this one. Looking at the notes I should like it. Vanilla is a favourite, I like Tonka bean in other fragrances. Rose, Iris and Jasmine are all lovely. But this bottle, I do not know what it is. The bergamot? Maybe it's just overpowering on me? I prefer scents that blend with me, my skin but better. With this it is too obvious that I am wearing something, and that something does not suit me at all. Like a child wearing her mother's fragrance. I have had my bottle for 10years+, thinking maybe I need to mature into it, but there is some soapy-sharpness that puts me off.

Agnes81

Shalimar edt opens citrussy and a bit herbal. After a little while I get a small smoky whiff of wet ashtray together with the bergamot – but it only lasts for a few minutes. After about fifteen minutes it starts to mellow out and the vanilla arrives at the scene together with the iris. The vanilla is a bit smoky without feeling heavy. It is not girly sweet or dessert-like. It dries down soft, powdery vanilla, very beautiful - and I’m surprised to say very wearable. The sillage is moderate. I was a bit intimidated to try this and afraid it would be too much for me. Too vintage, too heavy, too dark/smoky/animalic. But it is neither. I am testing from a freshly opened, around 20 year old mini and I think I need to get my hands on a full bottle soon.

meliecat

I have 2 small bottles, they were somehow hidden and I ended up opening one after the other by accident.. I can't remember ever sampling the eau de parfum, but I get vanilla, leather and iris, with a bit of tonka and a tiny bit of rose.. It's defo the eau de toilette, but I still get a leather note here or else I'm mistaken and it's bergamot. I somehow like it, although I don't wear anything this strong..On clothes it smells better than on my skin, in winter I sprayed it on my scarf or collar and it gave me a festive feel. The bottle is gorgeous, I'd have it for the bottle alone to be honest..

monokeros

Shalimar edt wow!! I like also the edp because I love the powdery perfumes, but this.. is a huge surprise!
It opens up powdery but I can also smell the bergamont. It is a little bit sweet with the powderiness and at the dry down comes the vanilla and make it more special!
For me the edt is feminine and classy and clean and cosy at the same time! Perfume for life! It is a guerlain perfume for years and years and I can really understand why ❤ huge respect for this perfume and even if you don't like the edp try this one and maybe you will love this!

carlahoffman

I was so lucky I scored a vintage bottle from 1991 from a older lady who needed money and I got my $23 worth and so much more. The bottle is so neat it looks like something that would have see sitting on Mom's dresser in the seventies when I was growing up.

It has a lovely spicy opening with a floral background where the vanilla creeps in and gives it a seemly powdery scent which is so lovely. I can smell the jasmine and Iris not the rose that dries down into a light vanilla, leathery scent. The scent is alluring, delicious and just beautiful,

Provides a good projection for a toilette but remember this is a vintage bottle where I personally feel the notes are stronger in scent and is quite long lasting. Working good in this cooler weather both during the day and at night! Wearing this makes me feel more like a lady.

brynandoskarsmam

This is spicy and slightly musky on me and I love it. I think this will be a permanent addition to my perfume collection.

tasoula

To me it smells like leather, tyres, herbs, soil, the velvet tablecloth my mother kept in the chest for decades. Compared to this, Aromatics Elixir is a little fluffy angel hopping around. There is no vanilla, no powder, no floral Persian garden whatsoever here. This stuff is very difficult to digest. A very dangerous blind buy. Nevertheless, something deep inside me tells me we will get along in the end.

Skank

Smells like a delicious, milky potion that fills you with love and joy. I don't find it mysterious or old or feminine, but it is super complex and distinct. One of my absolute faves and I fully savour it whenever I wear it (which is infrequently but indiscriminately).

Chili93

I wore this exclusively for a few months in my early twenties. Lasted all day and I loved the development and especially dry down which is much less 1920s than initial spray. For me though living in a hipster part of town I became too aware that I was perhaps unconsciously wearing a "retro" fragrance while buying my vinyl records and wearing recycled Levis LOL. So that's how I now think of this fragrance. Too much time between when it was brought out and now for it to feel like it really fits. Of course it ought to be appreciated for its beauty, but it's the olfactory version of wearing a relic which can seem out of place in most modern situations. Having said that I love Jardins de Bagatelle so maybe I'm selective with my relics.

kasiolinka

This is the second perfume in my life that made such an amazing impression on me. I didn't really like it on the initial spray at the store, but later I went outside and this gorgeous scent just blew me away. It smells like luxury to me, very expensive even though it is not a niche perfume

Koningin

I absolutely adore the scent. Its a textbook make-up powder fragrance which still manages to be unique. It’s a pity it has weak sillage, and performance is I guess what you would expect from an EDT.
It’s a non-offensive scent which I’m sure will get you many compliments, mainly because it’s delicate and soft. Despite the vintage vibe and how long it’s been around, it smells modern and chic.
A young gal can pull it off just as well as a 60 year old. I’m not mad at Guerlain for modernizing this one, it’s a job well done. I happen to find this one to be suitable for daytime as well as night time.

Yana_Yana

This's a pretty fluffy classy slightly smoky scent. I was scared by the reviews that claim that the EDP version is too animalistic and hard to wear, so I got the EDT. When I first got it, I also found it a little too unique to be easy to wear. However, a month later I find it addictive and every-day appropriate. I am not impressed with the projection and sillage, maybe I should spray more boldly.

Beccyb95

This is not nearly as stinky as I expected (though I did get the EDT, because I was a bit scared of the EDP). It’s actually much sexier and less stuffy than I thought, though definitely classic/old fashioned and definitely powerful. The bottle is just gorgeous, and adds to the classy vintage feel.

Extremely powdery opening, but I like powdery scents and my first thought was a mildly surprised “oh! I actually like this!” I detect a bit of spice in that opening too, which I think keeps it from smelling too old-lady powdery. I get a bit of vanilla sweetness, a bit of floral, but not much citrus (seemingly different to most other people!). It’s like sexy incense.

I really suspect this might grow on me. I could even be tempted to try the EDP after all...

ETA: This smells SO GOOD on me. It’s not overpowering but I kept getting small whiffs of myself over the evening and thinking “this is lovely”. It’s old fashioned but classy and surprisingly clean. Big fan.

Cherry_Darling

I've tested this before, and now again as I came across this in a swap. I have to say I like this better than EDP, and perhaps even more than the extrait though I will have to do a side by side of all 3. A good leathery powdery citrussy vanilla, all the good bits of shalimar and to me it's not skanky fecal gasoline like EDP (though I can enjoy that too if in the right mood.) I'm considering getting a small bottle but I do wonder if I'll ever get around to giving it any attention with all these 10/10 vanillas and resinous beauties available...if anyone in the UK has a bottle for swap - check my swap list!

Triple testing:
EDT: light citrussy vanilla soft leather and smoke
EDP: gasoline animalic citrussy vanilla leather and smoke
Parfum: creamy buttery flowers and iris bergamot

sarah.moss

I have only owned the vintage EDT and love it. Yes, it is played out, yes, it is intense -but it's still fun to wear. It reminds me of a sassy, freshly-sexed woman in vintage lingerie, eating a cinnamon bun. Who can say no to that?

Perfumedsecrets

This is the closest version I have found to my favorite Shalimar, which was Shalimar Light (renamed Eau Legere after a reformulation) from 2004. I really enjoy wearing it on cozy days at home. It’s a jewel that’s ever changing on my skin.

I bought just a sample of Shalimar EDT first as
I was worried that the EDP would be too strong for my taste, although I'm planning to give that a try as well. I couldn't wait to smell it, but once I sprayed it on my skin all I could smell was benzine (gasoline). And I just saw the previous reviewer said the same thing! I was surprised to see no incense note either. Absolutely no vanilla at all or any floral on my skin. One hour in and the gasoline smell accentuates, therefore sadly I think it's a pass for me. I'm thinking to try Souffle Intense maybe.

mldaleali28

Somehow, the iconic Shalimar never got a place in my collection. Every time I was tempted to buy it, I ended up buying something else instead. Also, I never had the chance to sample it. So I decided to finally buy it and yesterday it arrived in my post. The problem is, I don’t know if this is how it's supposed to smell or I just got a fake one (Fragrance direct website). It starts with a blast of ...kerosene, then I get some resins, a faint lemon, it’s smoky and leathery, but there’s absolutely no vanilla on my skin, no tonka, no jasmine. Is this how it's supposed to smell? I’m confused.

Pia61

I find this, as someone already commented, also harsh, smokey, leathery fragrance. I might give it another try, and spray sparingly and wait for the dry down. I love the bottle though. Original Shalimar edp is classy.

Avian

Smells like an easier-to-love Jicky. Delicious, happy, cuddly vanilla powder, lemon rind, and herbal purple flowers. Just gorgeous. There is plenty to say about Shalimar EDT, but it really must be experienced in person. For the price, you can't do much better!

Danielle79

I own a few of the older bottles of edt. I would say 60-70's so back then Guerlain said that was basically their EDP. I have to agree as these are way stronger than my current edp of this. The Bergamont in this is still very strong like the old Marley horse extrait.
The vanilla so boozy, and the dry down is like the most wonderful incense with a vanilla that is not powdery. The leather note is there but not as strong which I prefer.

These bottle I have I can't truly date. I can say its the Zebra box's with silver around the label on one box. Where the other has the edt label like the old big 70's bottles. They have big brown plastic tops that scream 70's but one could be 60's?!? They are not removable and these only come in 1 and 1.7oz.

The scent is sooo good I adore Shalimar but I'm a sucker for only the vintage edt. The bergamont, vanilla, tonka, and personally I like that there were no restrictions back then.I get why there are some standards but they should only be to ensure quality and efficacy. We should make our own choices with common sense. I think we're intelligent enough to do so. This though if you can find a bottle get it!!

I've been on the hunt ever since and am amassing a lot but is it ever enough with Shalimar? :)

enevictor

I saw reviews that say it's harsh, smokey, leathery. Perfume reacts differently from person to person. All I want to point out is that on my skin I get a smooth, waxy, balsamic vanilla. I was hoping for it to project more (even though the staying power is very good), but, hey, I got the edt, so I shouldn't complain.

All in all, I am very happy with this one!

lady_ireth264

Ah this is unfortunate... Shalimar EDT doesn't agree with me...
My skin can only project harsh bergamot plus smokey stuff which smells like bug spray....
I may try shalimar souffle one day.

Mari.kuchulu

Smells like wax and citrus to begin with. But after an hour, iris and powder and prominent leather are all I can smell on my skin. Not sure yet. Longevity is good if I stick my nose into my skin. Sillage for only the first hours or two.

middle25

Classic.....beautiful, deep, mysterious, sensual, potent. Even though this is an Eau de Toilette, it has plenty of strength to make it through the day or night. One of my favorites and a must for any perfume collector.

Starlight_moon

It's a nostalgic scent. I enjoy it but it could be heavy for some people and it's definitely not for wearing in warm weather. It could be overpowering and headache-inducing as well. BUT at the same time it's elegant and beautiful. It's not something I would reach out to on a daily basis but when I am in a certain mood for it.

Louismanuel

For sure there are leather notes on the EDT version. Not as heavy as on the EDP, but still I think it is the main note.
I own both the EDT and the EDP. Great leather fragrance, also for a man.

MelodieNuit

Rose, vanilla, tonka bean, incense all dance together to embody the sensual woman. A little goes a long way though. I pair it with a spicy body wash that has patchouli or turmeric and it brings out the bloom even more. I will likely go for the flankers on this soon.

Jones_2020

I have the EDT and I get a lovely bright citrus opening. As Shalimar EDT starts to dry down I pick up soft, light, and clean powder. Iris and rose are like lightly billowing curtains. The tonka bean and vanilla play well together. The vanilla is not sweet, the tonka bean gives the vanilla a warm and comforting feel. I’ve not picked up a leather note that others have mentioned, this maybe my chemistry. Shalimar EDT is timeless. Hmm the Jasmine... maybe Jasmine is what is wrapped around the rose and iris like a hug.
Update
I picked up the leather note!
I get the soft suede from the lining of a designer hand bag.

thatsperf

Finally a Shalimar I can get behind. Powdery comforting smoky vanilla with added iris and leather. Amazing drydown of earthy vanilla.

RoseGolden

At first, I get that blast of powder- iris, the scent that reminds me of my great grandmothers powdering their faces in the late 80s... I adore it. A very vintage opening. Then the powder reveals a lot of incense- I have the EDT btw- I don’t see incense listed here? But I get a Whole lot of incense... and citrus. I’m not sure how I feel about this part but nevertheless I’m very intrigued. As the incense and citrus slowly wafts away, I get this delicious soft and pillowy vanilla that made my eyes roll back when I sniffed it. Wow! This edt is more than just a fragrance. It’s truly an experience... This is everything I love about perfume.

flowers-in-the-springtime

I have spent years trying to love Shalimar. After all, it's a timeless, classic, masterpiece, loved by millions and deserves to be adored. However in all my perfumista years, I have found this a hard perfume to love. To me it is leathery, deep and almost masculine. I could never quite love it although I have liked it on occasions. I think it works best in the autumn, winter time.
Shalimar EDT is a great way to transition into 'the real thing'. Shalimar EDT is for beginners. This is much lighter, less leathery and the vanilla is far more prominent and sweet right from the beginning. EDT is easy to wear, it doesn't need understanding or time, it just is what it is, a lovely, feminine, soft vanilla, with the unmistakable trade make of the original perfume from the genius of the House of Guerlain.
Once your nose has become accustomed to the notes of the EDT, I feel that the EDP will be more loved and appreciated for the beautiful perfume that it is.

Longevity: This in an EDT so don't expect great things although It lasts on clothes until they are washed. I get about 3-5 hours sprayed on my skin.
Fabulousness: 10/10
Projection: 10/10. This beauty will get you complements!

TexasOrangeBlossom

😍 I’m a convert! Like others have said, just give it some time.

Snippet

Please, please, do yourself a favor and hold judgement on this classic until this has been on your skin for a few hours. It totally transforms through the wear, and when a perfume lasts like this, it is worth the wait (not that I dislike the powder).

The first couple hours will be powdery, but just wait for the vanilla, because that is what will stick with you and remain on your clothes for days after application- dirty, earthy, vanilla.

CaitlinBlair

This one is a powdery powerhouse!

I am usually great at picking apart fragrances and identifying the different notes in a composition, so it pains me that I cannot smell anything but iris and florals in Shalimar EDT. On my skin, it smells like straight baby powder. A rose-scented baby powder that is applied on skin just after using a baby wipe, so I can understand why @kaylanorma is getting a "diaper" vibe. In the drydown, I sense the faintest whiff of incense, which is not even a listed note, but it's there. If you like sweet scents and you're expecting to get a lot of vanilla in this, look elsewhere. Shalimar Souffle De Parfum Intense will be a much better option for you.

I really wanted to like this, as I am a big fan of several Shalimar flankers. I can still understand why someone would enjoy this fragrance, though, as well as the "motherly" vibe that several have claimed this portrays. It does feel mature and classy, and maybe in a formal setting, this fragrance would really shine. The original Shalimar DNA is such a glamorous classic and I appreciate it for that fact alone, but the scent just doesn't appeal to me and is, unfortunately, a scrubber.

AdeleHugo

I want to love this but the mental image I have in my head is a sweaty outdoor barbecue. Something does not agree at all with my chemistry and is borderline offensive. I’m sad because I thought I was becoming a Guerlain gal, but this is not good at all on me.

BoutiqueLove

As much as I wanted to love this I couldn’t
This has a strong faecal/ bad breath smell mixed with vanilla with a soft effervescent something. I love the classics such as Chanel No5 but this one I really couldn’t!

jero

The first hour is overwhelming, refreshing citrus+so clean iris+out-of-the-world something; then I can hardly smell anything, it just leaves a trace of mystery of the faint candy-like vanilla, with a hint of the civet. It's a shame the longevity couldn't be better, and edt is more flowery, very flowery, much young and bright, more joyful than edp, edp is more about the classic.

It's a BIG shame this all-time-favorite was totally disappeared from the Guerlain counters here -_-...

Algee

My Grandmother wore Shalimar it made her happy especially because she was a snob it fit her personality perfectly.

I respect that some people have different taste and range from fine wine to Pepsi ("that's a very fine beverage" said George Costanza by Seinfeld), No not all scents are sensible for everyone Shalimar smells awful on me like baby powder not a fan : /

Supersmelle

The short: I like/love this scent. Glamorous scent.

The long: I really like/almost love this scent. It is glamorous and rich. I did have to try it a few times to understand it better though.

My bottle is a current version EDT. It opens with a potent leathery lime (citric) blast to the senses. I am surprised to not see any leather notes mentioned on the page as it is prominent. Within 10-15 mins, it settles into to a powdery spiciness. Iris, vanilla, and tonka galore. I am trying to place the florals listed, but, I really don’t sense them after several wears.

It is quite the opulent fragrance. This is for an aficionado, someone who appreciates classics and complexity in fragrances.

Sprayed lavishly it has a cloud projection and can get you through an evening or event without reapplying. Great value for the price tag.

*Just an aside. It is likely that you have smelled this on someone before. I had no idea that it was Shalimar but, once I was reacquainted, there was no doubt. [Mothers, aunts, teachers, women passing you by.] It is really beautiful and memorable.

Looking For Gabby

Where do I start with Shalimar?

To me, Shalimar is comfort and motherly. Shalimar (EDT) has been my mother’s signature scent for as long as I can remember. Some say this scent can be too old fashioned but to me it’s absolutely gorgeous, a classic and a masterpiece. It has stood the test of time.

Memories of my childhood are all wrapped up in its powdery creamy aroma. Whenever I visit my mother I sneak into her bedroom and spray myself from head to toe. I think any woman of any age can wear it but then again I’ve been sneaking sprays of it since I was twelve.

I have worn this to the office and it gets me compliments. Yes, compliments not complaints. Believe it or not men compliment me when I have this on. They seem to really like the oriental creamy vanilla at the dry down; I think it’s quite sensual at that phase. Or maybe it could just be that it’s new to some of their noses and senses.

I myself don’t own a bottle. I own some of the flankers and in my opinion they’ll never be as good as the EDT and EDP.

I owe it to Shalimar, because without it I wouldn’t be here today.

forêt

I really love it and feel great rocking it. I have an ‘80’s “parfum de toilette” concentration mini and it’s potent and lemony. Unfortunately I listened to a reviewer who said Shalimar Souffle is so beautiful. More wearable. So I ordered a bottle, at least it was only $38 and I find that one a bit icky and sickly. So I think I will want to have a larger EDP or EDT of Shalimar in my collection and perhaps sell the other, if anyone wants it. I guess I’ll give it a couple more chances. But this straight up Shalimar is gorgeous and delightful! I love the old school frags. Chanel #5 as well..

aussiecolognelover88

I’ll preface this by saying that I am a male, and I decided to try this as I saw a YouTube review saying that if you’re a guy wanting to try Shalimar than you should I try the EDT. Ok, I see the appeal of this, it’s pretty damn wonderful, I can see why still after almost 100 years that this is still such a beloved fragrance for so many people.

It’s fit for a queen, or in my case and I hope many other men who decide to give this a try, a king. Very smoky at first and then ultra powdery at the dry-down. This reminds me so much of my grandma, it has a lovely cozy vibe about it, I feel warm and nice when wearing it.

I can’t compare it to the EDP as I thought I’d try the lighter version first, however, this is potent enough as it is. At first it’s very strong, almost cloying, but it settles down nicely after about 20 minutes. It disappears after a few hours and I imagine that is where the EDT and EDP differ, but still amazing performance either way.

It certainly lived up to its reputation, in my opinion. I hope some bold guy reads this and decides to give it a try just as I did, I want more guys to become more experimental with female fragrances.

Lastly, what I loved to do was to spray this all over my dressing gown and then leave it a few days. When I put the dressing gown on it felt like I was enveloped in a smoky, incensey heaven. 9/10.

Thank you for reading and I hope you have a great day :)

Aland2020

I finally get it! I can finally appreciate the beauty of this fragrance. A sweet resinous blend, powdery and strong, without being too overpowering. I’m not sure if I could pull off the eau de parfum just yet, but this one is slightly less intense and a bit more powdery. I do get the citrus top notes which open the fragrance up with a nice burst of zestiness. First I fell in love with Lubin Kismet. That one becomes much more stronger on the vanilla, but this one stays nicely balanced, never turning gourmand. It has good performance and I could see this one being pulled off year round. I really admire this one now and can finally understand where it’s coming from, in fact I might grow to love this with more time. Does this mean I can join the club now?

MANOSH9286

BOY OH BOY, I bought this yesterday and already ordered another bottle, This is a classic smooth dreamy scent, that's very powdery on my skin also reminds me of INGRAM shaving cream, that's a fragrance my grandma would wear but so do I, It's very mature, not for girls. I'm SO IN LOVE.

EnergeticCrab

I have a tiny 5ml bottle of this, probably from the 90s. I don't know how that affects the formulation or review.

On me, Shalimar EDT had a very strong woodsy/balsamic/powdery scent. It is not sweet and not floral. Like another reviewer said, it has a cosmetic/face powder aspect. It brings a tone that is stately, but not matronly. However this scent is too mature for me, and serious in tone. Like a vanity box filled with white evening gloves and silver cigarette holders, it is of another time and era.

HyacinthBucket

I own about 20 bottles of Shalimar in various concentrations and vintages, not including flankers. Each bottle has it's own personality.

My favorite is an eau de toilette in a flat, rectangular bottle from the late 70's. It has such a gorgeous, bright, beautiful bergamot opening. This fresh and intense note is missing from every other bottle of Shalimar I own. In more modern formulations, that bright and sparkling bergamot note is fleeting or barely detectable or smells a bit (dare I say it) odd.

It seems each decade of Shalimar has it's own distinct twist. If you've tried one you have not yet tried them all.

Fairy Nuff

I'm not sure why I don't find this as special as it seems to be for others. To me this just smells like medicine, sweat and an old ashtray. I faintly detect something better lurking in the background but it doesn't fight hard enough to push through the smelly pong in front.

IAmStaka

Smells like my grandfather's shaving foam.
Not sure if that's a good or bad thing :D

ChelleBelle84

So I had a friend call me up and tell me she just got the latest formulation of this scent. Asked me if I wanted to come over, and give it try. Said it wasn’t as dirty as the older versions. Since I was going to be taking a shower later anyway I figured, what did I have to lose? Nothing ventured nothing gained.

So I sprayed this very lightly on my skin. Wow! This is beautiful! Then I realized what the problem was with this scent when trying it out before. First, it may have been the older formulations. Second, whenever I tried to test it at one of the perfume counters, sales associates who never wanted to give me the bottle to spray it on myself, hosed me down with it. What I mean is, they would hold the sprayer too close to my hand and spray leaving a puddle of product on my hand. That was far too much and really quite nauseating. Less is more with this one. Mist this on instead when first trying this.

When applied correctly, this starts off with a strong bergamot that quickly softens to a beautiful floral of rose, jasmine, and iris. Smells kind of like powdery cosmetics like face powder, NOT baby powder. Not far behind is the tonka bean and the vanilla.

The EDP is still too much for me. In fact, it smells like what I was sprayed with in the stores. Perhaps I got hosed down with the EDP? This works quite nicely for me now as does the newer Cologne version.

PS I want my Shalimar Parfum Initial back though!

kaylanorma

I really wanted to love this, but it just smells like baby powder and a dirty diaper on me. When it dries down I can definitely smell a big dose of incense, but then it rapidly becomes a powdery skin scent.

I actually like it, just not on me. I haven't tried Shalimar EDP though.

miauogoo

Shalimar EDT was not a love at first sniff for me. The first time I spritzed her on my wrist, I was immediately hit by that sharp, sharp blast of bergamot that's in the opening and decided to scrub whatever I could off of my body. I really wanted to love her, though, so I tried her out again and again and again.

You need to be very patient with Shalimar. Once that blast of bergamot mellows down, the scent becomes very clean, cozy, and comforting. This scent is absolutely perfect for cuddling up with your SO in the dead of winter. This scent is made for sweaters and blankets and a movie marathon. I could also see someone wearing this to a formal event during the winter time. Although I think someone might be able to pull this scent off in the fall or spring, this is a very strong powdery scent so it would probably be a little too much to handle in the heat.

Sirila

I tried this on my arm at Sephora today. I was not fond of the opening of this one, it was very strange to me. However after a short while very pleasant notes came out. I did not plan to buy it at first because of the strange note that I really can't place. However since my husband, who thinks giving his opinion on perfumes that to him smell just the same is the most boring thing in the World right now, literally started licking and biting my arm when he smelt it I think I just need to own it 😂 I might get back with another review once I have gotten to know it better but so far all I can say is there is something about this scent, plus it is unique.

Vikki1985

I've finally got around to sampling this, I've been on a perfume mission and I left this and samsara until last because I knew that they probably wouldnt be for me or that they would probably be hate to say it but a little old fashioned...but needed to try them as they are legends.

I was totally wrong on the old fashioned part..this does not smell vintage it has clearly stood the time which has completely shocked me, however it isnt for me, it's a tricky scent to describe, it isnt horrible by any means whatsoever so do gove it a try! But on me it is just a little nondescript, alot of people say that this is baby powdery and I get what they mean to a degree..but it is a very grown up baby powdery, thos is a deep scent but it is still quite nondescript on my skin, it diesnt grab me, it sorta just smells ok, not bad and not intoxicating, I like soft powdery scents during the day they are actually my favourite kind but this is loud and soft all at the same time and I wouldnt class it as beautiful just ok.

I like soft powdery violet rose scents, they are my fave kind and this isnt like those, I kinda want to say that I can smell the citrus coming through more in this but I'm completely sure, either way this isnt for me x

I can't stop wearing this. I love the EDP as well but I keep wearng this one because there's something addictive in the dry down, and it's really a very easy to wear on the daily fragrance, that seemingly no one else is wearing. I find I get more incense in this version than the EDP, which I love. The two men in my life; my husband and my 12yr old son, comment almost every time I wear this how much they love it.

mv88

This has been a favorite for the past 15 years or so, since before i started experimenting with different scents. 2 years into a new perfume hunting hobby, it's still in my top 3.

I initially heard about it reading about how it was the signature scent of 1970s fashion maven Chelita Secunda. I bought it and was surprised by that - - I would've imagined she might wear something much more bold!

When i bought it, my mom was happily surprised and said it had been her own signature scent in the late 60s, because she found it supremely feminine.
My mom is the epitome of girly sweetness, but very quietly and shyly so. That to me perfectly describes Shalimar.

It is quiet pastel colors by day, and elegant gold and silver at night. Velvet and satin. A willowy fairy fragrance. It makes me think Arwen from Lord of the Rings smells like this.

Powdery like makeup powder, not baby powder.

I've never forked out for the EDP, because of the price, but I finally did (waiting for delivery now) because it doesn't last very long on me. Like with my Guerlain Meteorites Le Parfum, this has so far been something I wear right before bed just to relax in its softness. By day it doesn't last more than an hour or 2.

DT953

This is one of my all time favourite fragrances. It takes the intensity and sexiness of the EDP and the beautiful citrus treated leather aspects of the EDC and turns out something magical. This was my first introduction to the magic of Shalimar and I've owned three bottles of it in total. I've heard this compared to Dettol, which is an (I think) Australian antiseptic cleaner scented with orange rind oil. I do understand this. I, personally, only get a powdery leather and vanilla with a strong bergamot opening.

I truly can't even begin to describe how beautiful this is to me. I just purchased another bottle because I wasn't finding the EDP to be as comforting to me and needed some o' that beautiful Guerlainade that Jicky wasn't giving me. This is truly individual from anything else from the house and anything from any other house

Shalimar is a classic fragrance and beloved by many. A brief glance at the reviews below will attest to the enduring popularity of this perfume. There's a ever growing list of flankers, too. Well, I never understood the attraction and decided to explore this mystery. Today a mini of S. edt and S. edp arrived, and the testing commenced. First I tried the edt only to remember why I didn't like this scent. The opening of vanilla is fine but quickly replaced by a sourish note, followed by what should be incense. Alas, the incense is stale, like old cigarette smoke. The overall impression is a tired fragrance past its prime.
Fresh from this disappointing experiment I tried on the edp. Now this is a different thing altogether with deeper notes and thankfully devoid of the sourness. The vanilla lingers and the incense is rich and smoky, as it should be.
An edp is more concentrated than an edt, so the results aren't surprising. What's the pure perfume like, I wonder? It may well be a lovely vanilla/incense bomb - I could live with that.
In any case, S. edt doesn't make the cut, the edp is better. Still, the best classic incense frag still is vintage Emeraude.

perfumeninja

I love Shalimar. It is such an iconic fragrance and one I'll never be without.

I've worn, love and own Chantilly in both the Houbigant vintage and the New Dana version.

Emeraude I also own and love. Each fragrance IMHO are individual scents and stand on their own merits. I don't really think of them in comparison to each other.

I love the Shalimar EDT. Everything that some people don't like about the EDT are the things I do like. The bergamot delivers an almost medicinal soothing balm effect to my state of mind when I spray it on.

After I've worn it for the day I'm left with this rich warm incense that is altogether elegant and comforting.

I wear it mostly in the cooler months and it's always a favorite of mine around the holidays. Cinnabar and Shalimar complete the holiday scent list for me.

Edit: I'm not sure if it matters but my Shalimar is from a gift set of lotion, powder and EDT and is over 10 years old. I haven't smelled the one in the newer bottle. I'm getting ready to restock and will probably get another older fluted bottle to replace mine. The powder is luscious.
BTW, not a huge fan of the style of the new non-fluted bottles but as long as the scent is the same that's what matters.

I didn't know the sandalwood I've been looking for was right before my eyes.

On me, this is mainly sandalwood and incense, enhanced by powder, and balanced by citrus and vanilla, with a faint floral touch.

This is a very very pleasant surprise.

Recently I got a collection of guerlain classics sample, thought I should at least have this reference.

I love sandalwood and have been checking many fragrances. I was surprised to find this reminds me of a recent favorite sandalwood: ambra Nobile by Nobile 1942. The sandalwood Amber patchouli thing going on with citrus and powder in this fragrance, although seemingly far apart from Shalimar, Is in my scent memory reminiscent of Shalimar edt, Only I prefer Shalimar edt. Easier to find, for less, and the scent is deeper and has a sexiness that the rather a-sexual ambra nobile doesn't. (Still love it). I'm not a citrus lover but I Ike the presence of citrus here. It opens with a citrus burst like a classic men's cologne but that fades within minutes, making way to the beautiful creamy incensy cloud.
It is familiar, and I find that a plus in this case.

My experience with classics was not very encouraging since Chanel no.5, (which I hated when I first tried it way back), but now I'm more open to explore more classics.

Next is Shalimar edp.

powederedoranges

I blind bought this as I intended to buy Samsara, but the bottle of Shalimar was so appealing I ended up with both! At first I wasn't sure if I liked it - it smelled powdery and sweet and definitely reminded me of something my Nana wore (I think the powdery smell reminds me of old fashioned cosmetics - whereas modern cosmetics try and smell more lightly/ fresh floral). I let the beautiful bottle sit on my counter for a good few months until I visited the Guerlain store on the Champs-Elysees and had to go in. I ended up buying Shalimar Souffle EDP which I simply adore, and which ended up being a sort of gateway drug to the original Shalimar collection. The EDT opens with more citrus than Souffle and is arguably sexier, but a little harder to wear (I still wear it to the office and in general day to day but don't overspray!). It dries down to the most delicious powdery vanilla and I can't stop smelling my wrist. I'm keen to get a bottle of EDP one day and compare - although I live in a very warm area and EDT is already deliciously heavy (even in winter).

Edit: I realised I've been adding one(ish) word summaries of all the perfumes I review and neglected Shalimar. I'm actually having a hard time coming up with one, but for now I'll settle on "like an embrace."

Catsylvania

Despite already owning a good old EDP, I've decided to get myself an EDT because why not, and that way my greedy little soul can use the EDT version on casual daily basis whilst keeping my nearly 8 years old EDP for more special times.

Certainly, there are differences between EDT and EDP. Shalimar EDT smells more sharp, it has a more dusty/powdery start with strong blow of bergamot that sometimes does give the baby powder vibes, which some of other users commented on below. To be fair, the baby powder thing usually lasts a very short amount of time and reminds more of a bit dusty bergamot tea that comes in metallic tins. After a while, the sharp and powdery start is rounded up by vanilla and jasmine. So essentially, this is the same Shalimar, and if you let the EDT mature for a while, it'll be just as great.

While I'm very much satisfied with Shalimar EDT, it's super long lasting and I really want to reach for it every single day, I found that the scent sits a bit too close to the skin. May be a bonus for some, a downfall for the rest. Either way, a huge thumbs up for this version. I've always been a huge fan of Shalimar, and I'll always be.

Feige

It’s a very intense scent at first that feels a little “grandma-ish”. It gradually softens and turns powdery on me, then lastly transforms into a rich and warm blanket of comfort in the drydown which is my favourite part. The longevity is quite short though, which shouldn’t be surprising I guess, as it’s an EDT.

smellsbells

edt pales in comparison to the edp...

dmetzger

Old VS new comparison; Shalimar EDT.

Vintage 1930’s and contemporary 2018.

Shockingly they both start off with a blast of bergamot, even the 1930’s version retains some citrus. The contemporary one is a brighter bergamot and buttery vanilla after the opening, while the antique has a thinner but darker vanilla extract and the sour-sweet tonka more prominent.

I can definitely detect the Iris in the contemporary version (my least favorite note but I’m doing it for you all) and the “floral notes” which have a slightly powdery white floral bent they work well together. The antique Shalimar has rose more prominent and it it a beautiful hothouse rose that reminds me of Kazimi. There is also an aldehyde and *vaguely* mentholated ghost haunting the composition.

The antique reaches it’s final drydown within about 30 minutes and becomes a skin scent on my thirsty skin with facets of incense peeking through. The contemporary Shalimar EDT stays transparent and projecting very softly off the skin for about an hour on me.

Longevity on the Antique is only about three hours maximum where I’d be confident it’s still there if I hugged someone. But of course if I grind my face to my arm, I can smell it up to 6.5ish hours. The contemporary EDT lasts about the same but has a longer volatile stage so it beats the antique on performance but shockingly not by much.

I’d say that the closest thing to the antique vintage Shalimar EDT that I could reference would be a *very* light misting of Feve Deliceuse and Kazimi. Who knows if this was how it was meant to smell originally but they should have kept it-and frankly it’s surprising to me how well this antique bottle and it’s juice has fared.

I have waited a long time to enter the gates of Shalimar. It has haunted me through literature and the screen. Today my very first score has arrived in the post. I took my time opening it like it was a precious jewel. I'm savouring my first cloud, in the air and in a whisper as it hits my skin. At once the archway to the casbah invites me in, a beautiful Arab beckoning me to follow him. (of course, he is a Royal Prince in disguise who has escaped the Palace grounds and his minders.) Naturally I follow him, but I feel I am being followed. Followed by my mother whose presence is announced by puffs of Johnson's Baby Powder which she liberally applies after bathing. I think my Aunty Pat must be lurking somewhere as well as Youthdew and Chantilly float by. Mmmm, where will the Prince lead me? I'm not sure, but I am willing to follow him to my conclusion.
UPDATE. By the evening I was already in the arms of my Prince, his strong arms holding me in a warm glow.
By morning I had become a true addict, my first thoughts on waking being, Oh God, let me sleep like that again. But once awake, nothing could stop me reaching for that bottle (sat on my bedside table so I could look at it as I fell asleep.). I just had to feel that first citrus blast again, only knowing the beauty which would then unfold again. Shalimar should be a class A drug.

I found this on my mom’s dresser, barely touched, and snuck a few spritzes on my wrists and neck. I LOVE this fragrance. I’ve always been drawn to more musky scents, and this one is perfect for me. It is entering summertime and the EDT is a nice, toned down version for the warmer weather. I look forward to purchasing the EDP for the cooler months. I think the thing that draws me most to Shalimar is its slightly masculine quality (on me, at least). On my skin, it smells like I was wearing my own perfume, spent time with a guy, and some of his cologne lingered on me. The mix of spicy, powdery vanilla with a hint of musk is sensual and intoxicating, and I get compliments whenever I wear it. My older brother even asked me, “Were you with a guy earlier?” HAHA! Love this fragrance.

Frangipanilove

Ah, Shalimar. What can I say? My flamboyant, and rather loud, aunt used to wear this when I were a teenager. It is not a young persons fragrance, nor is it meant to be. This is a scent for a woman, not a girl. I had smelled it, of course, its a classic but it was not until I was in my 30s and in France and in a shop somewhere where an american lady in her late 50s was walking ahead of me in the most exquisite veil of fragrance so much so that I actually had to stop her and ask her what she was wearing. Shalimar, on her, had mellowed out to that softness of vanilla/tonka with the complexity of the balsam and other notes, especially iris, with the hint of the smokiness which I think is the secret to this fragrance, why something this heavy can be so sophisticated at the same time. I made the descion that it was finally time for me to buy Shalimar. Like with L’Heure Bleue, Shalimar is challenging to wear, its so strong, so heady. And I am good with strong fragrances! Its one of these scents that are almost too much to be in yourself but everyone around you loves it. Its a classic, one that will always be around and rightfully so. Guerlain is what perfumery is at its finest and Shalimar is the most exqusite example of that. I am proud to own a bottle and, from time to time, I dip in to wear it. And then, not for a long time!

Anamandy

I never wore this because my sister's signature scent was Shalimar edp. It fit her perfectly and I never felt that I could wear it as well as she did. For some reason, I found that scent a little intimidating. The perfume is sultry, and mysterious, and all the things I am not. Nope, not for me.
This past summer a neighbor, who knows I like perfume because she's always commenting on how nice I smell, gave me a bottle of the edt she took from her mother's house after she passed away over 10 years ago. I have no idea beyond that how to date it but she believed her mother had it for at least 10 years and only wore it on special occasions. The bottle is more than half full.
On initial spray I get citrus, in particular lemon, and vanilla. Very nice, and it reminds me of Houbigant's Chantilly, but that's where the similarities end, because Chantilly's opening is also sweeter and slightly musky. Shalimar then becomes very weird. It develops this strange medicinal or chemical smell like varnish that stays around for so long I thought it was going to become a scrubber for me. I don't know if this is the normal evolution for this scent, or if it's my skin chemistry, or if the scent had gone bad, (after all, I don't know how my neighbor's mother stored it) but it's pretty horrible. Then I thought it must be a woody accord of some kind, though I couldn't distinguish what wood it was. Smells like a new wood fence had been put up and was freshly varnished. Then I finally realized it is was a leather accord, but not the well tooled leather as is in Habanita. This is a sharp leather that actually tickles my throat. Fortunately this phase, though long, is light and not overwhelming. After several hours of this it becomes a skin scent where a faint spicy rose with a slightly sweet vanilla tinge is prominent. That's it. That's all I got from this scent even though I gave myself several good sprays.
If this is all there is to this scent I really don't know what all the fuss is about. I'm sure there has to be something more to it than this, so I ordered a more recent boxed 1oz. edt. If I get the same thing out of it, then I'll know that I can't seem to smell what everyone else can and just put it up for trade.
Just wanted to add, I get zero powder in this, and from the reviews I read about vintage versions, they're not powdery either. Is this a recent development for the newer formulation?

Edit - Woke up the next morning to the most beautiful rose forward floral. Oh how I wish I smelled that instead of the insufferable paint scent. Still waiting for the new edt.

Update 5/3/19 - I'm wearing the new edt I received last week and it still seems to go through the same gyrations as the old formula except this is also very powdery and not as leathery. Nicer, but still not my cup of tea. I prefer the Eau de Cologne and the modern Cologne formula. They both just wear better on me.

Jmalone84

I can honestly say after awhile of wearing this that I find I have become a Shalimar lover. Initially it smelled old fashioned and baby powderish. But now that I understand it I find I'm able to pick apart the other aspects described. AND what's more, I am craving the scent even and reaching for it quite often. This is warm and yummy, I cannot wait to wear the EDP!

SpicyChaos

This review is for a new version of the edt.

I can't say this was/is love at first sniff, because I really do not like the opening powdery citrus notes in this. But I wait for about half an hour and then the flowery middle notes of a very noticable iris, jasmine and roses kicks in and I'm thrilled by the smell. It's so lovely. And then there's a sweet vanilla scent that lingers on.

I love spraying this onto my wrists so that I can keep this scent very close to my nose.

The fact that this was made in the 1920'es and still is very much loved, is a testament to the artistery in the bottle.

**Update**
At the time I reviewed this, Shalimar was still quite new to me, but now I'm even hooked on the opening powdery/citrous notes, that used to be bothering me. In fact the powdery notes stays on for the complete longevity of this scent. Being a male I feel this scent relates very well with my personality, so gentlemen, don't be afraid to try this magical scent from another millenium. There's art in this bottle for sure!

Flemeth

For some reason I had this idea that Shalimar was this sensual, feminine, smoky, slightly oriental vanilla scent. To my surprise, this smells exactly like the pink Johnson's baby lotion (I'm not sure if it's still around). Every now and then I got a hint of vanilla -a beautiful, realistic vanilla- but that was it. Freshly washed babies. The iris note is clearly written there, so not sure why I thought this would be so different to what I imagined.

CygneNoire

This was actually my second Guerlain blind buy (risky, I know!) that I've tried and absolutely adored after Champs Elysees. I was lucky enough to find a 3oz bottle for $15 on Ebay :). In the initial spray, you're consumed by light vanilla notes and powder. In the dry down, there's just a hint of amber-ish notes on my skin. It's romantic. Dreamy. Lovely. This is probably the most beautiful and complex perfume I've ever tried...and this is just the EDT version! I imagine the EDP would be more suitable for evening wear. The projection is moderate but it has this comforting, closeness, and sensual quality, like a big warm hug from your lover, that you will appreciate throughout the day.

malones

Just got this one today, and have only just tried it on, my here are my first impressions:

Very powerful and powdery. I get some citrus as well. Not my typical scent but I hope the dry down is a bit better. There's something very sharp in there that I don't particularly enjoy, but I'm not sure what it is!
I looove the bottle it's adorable!

Jmalone84

So excited right now to be reviewing this, as here in NZ we don't have access to the truly enormous department stores that stock all of these fragrances that aren't currently very popular.

So I scored a cheap bottle of the 30mL EDT today (though I really wanted the EDP but can't find one). The little bottle is just gorgeous. Purchased unsniffed because I trust I'll appreciate it and it was the last bottle.

At first I got the Guerlain blast of what smells like rice paper to me. Similar to Mitsukou. I don't like this stage overly much. But as it's settling on my skin I'm getting more and more excited by the complexity of the developing notes. So far an getting the milky vanilla, musk and citrus. Will update my very first experience of Shalimar as I go!

Update: I'm struggling to enjoy this. It smells like Mitsukou. That vintage powdery rice papery scent. I'm trying to pick apart the bergamot, vanilla and musk aspects but it's difficult. I'm not sure I like this. I would like to try the EDP and familiarise myself with the fragrance to get a handle on it. At this point my nose interprets it as straight up powder.

OKAY; third attempt. I have to say this EDT does not have impressive longevity. As for silage, it's quite gentle. The more I wear this, the more I am beginning to understand the language of Guerlain. I think this is one of those perfumes that a younger person who is not used to this type of fragrance would struggle with, if not immediately write off. Now that I'm used to this, I am to distinguish the accords, and I have to say I am quite enjoying this subtle, very French aroma. I am keen to wear the EDP and try any available flankers I can find.

I have to say, maybe someone wore this when I was very young, or perhaps I wore this in a past life. Because the scent is so very familiar and triggering for me.

Nuitdenoel

My mom has worn Shalimar since before I was born. Azuree is her every day fragrance and Shalimar is for special occasions. I love Shalimar in every form and have worn it since I was a little girl. I’m one of those people who get the vanilla as the primary note in all the concentrations (except Eau de Shalimar, which is definitely citrus forward).

The EDT is less musky and projects less than the edp. It is not quite as opulent but it is still rich. Most companies water down their EDTs, but not Guerlain. It always reads to me as Shalimar with the notes slightly rearranged. The vanilla is forward, followed by the citrus, without as much lovely smoke and musk. Guerlainade is still present, which I love.

I am an unabashed Shalimar lover, with the pure parfum being my absolute favorite, but I love them all, so take that into consideration when reading my review. Shalimar may not be for everyone, but she is certainly for me.

avierra93

the edp is too intense for me still. maybe in a few more years i can appreciate her properly. i decided to give the EDT another chance today. one spritz on my arm and i left it alone. caught very powdery, zesty, slightly leathery notes wafting up at first, not as much as the EDP but definitely a scent you would imagine on a more mature woman still. after she warmed up a little and settled a bit i started to smell something similar to baby wipes, but not the regular ones, theres a specific scent but i forget which one. something from walmarts line. pleasant and powdery fresh and clean. vanilla is starting to emerge, making everything softer. after a few hours, no leather, citrus has gone from lemon pledge to lemon bars, sweet with the lemon aroma but no bite of tartness. powder is softer too. very comforting scent. i would like to spray this a bit more generously when i get home from work after a shower so by the time i get in bed the fluffy lemon creme can send me off to dreamland

Its taken me many of my 41 years to test Shalimar in any form. I was recently able to purchase the EDC/EDT/EDP and Eau de Shalimar at brilliant pricing on a local online store so I took the plunge and blind bought all!! Why oh why did I wait so long?? I think the timing is just right for me .. I've always been a Chanel Girl but now I can also add that I am also a Guerlaine Girl.

The EDT is absolutely breathtaking!! I get a bright citrus opening which quickly dries down to a soft, sweet powdery vanilla (sweater than the EDP) which you get wafts of all day long.. absolutely beautiful!! Longevity for me about 10-11 hours. Its mid summer in SA if that makes any difference.

I absolutely Love the EDP too but it is different.. The dry down stays closer to the skin and its more rounded and deeper than the edt, the vanilla is a darker vanilla, not as powdery and light as the EDT.

EDC to me is more astringent in the opening than the EDT and EDP but also dries down to, I would say a bit of both.. its also beautiful.

Dont be scared of this Icon .. In any form!! Im thrilled I took the plunge.

My dad always loves when I wear Shalimar, and he himself is a casual fragrance collector. He's worn CK Obsession for as long as I've been alive. So many Christmases and birthdays that Obsession was his gift from me and my mom because he'd never turn his nose at it. So, the memories I have with my dad all have an ancillary fragrant component.

When I think of my dad, I think of spices and balms, aromatic aftershave accords bolstered by vanillic undertones. Shalimar is right up his alley, but I think he finds the EDP a bit intimidating; the EDT is a bit more his speed, and a bit more wearable for him. My mom also loves the melange of zesty citruses, sticky resins, and baby powder florals---she associates these accords with both me and my dad. Today for his birthday, I gifted him a bottle of the EDT and he was so thrilled to have his own Shalimar. I haven't stopped smiling since! It's like, in this case, the passing of traditions from one generation to another is working retroactively. I'm geeking out like a parent who just learned their child is into their old record collection.

Nothing will ever be as special to me as Shalimar or the feelings and memories it safeguards in that golden elixir of hers. My talisman of true happiness.

I never realized I needed Shalimar in body mist strength until I owned it. The new edt concentration is so light and close to the skin, it’s perfect for when you want Shalimar but are afraid it’s going to be too much either for yourself or for those around you. This new edt smells every bit as beautiful as other Shalimar formats and it does last on the skin and clothes for hours but it wears so intimately that it’s never too much. If you hug someone they’ll definitely smell it on you. I’d be upset if this were the only version available on the market because I often want some considerable projection out of my fragrance, but I’m so glad I own this edt in addition to the more leathery and dry edc. There’s a perfect Shalimar for every occasion and this one is your secret to share only with those you embrace.

risarii

Timeless, classic, mesmerizing

justchillinxo

I think this is a much more subdued, wearable and likeable version of the original. Albeit less interesting.

Also what the frick are people talking about when they say its for old people?? I sort of get what they mean by dark amber coloured fluids like obsession and youth dew, those are retro. But shalimar EDT is timeless and wearable.

Seems like these days anything that's not candy sweet and fruity is "old"... ridiculous!!!

Bubbles1964

Hard to believe but I made it to my mid 50s before wearing Shalimar. I have surely smelled this before, but luckily I don’t pick up a grandma vibe. Today I’m wearing the EDT, and it’s gorgeous; a delicious powdery vanilla. Love it!

Konga5000

The latest incarnations of this have VERY poor longevity. It's a nice comforting scent with "body spray" strength. Sad.

supersucrose

I wasn't sure if I would like this perfume based on mixed reviews (people either really liked it or hated it), but once I sprayed it on, I feel it really evolved. In the beginning, it smells more strong and a bit spicy, but once it mellows, the powdery iris notes reminds me of the smell of mochi. The initial "spiciness" and the smell reminiscent of rice made me understand why Guerlain called it "Shalimar".

It's a great perfume to wear out; it's not too strong to where it would offend anybody, but it smells unique enough to call it a signature (at least among my age group). I think it's a perfect mix of floral and gourmand. I really like it!

zadewee

I'm not sure why the notes on EDT are so sparse compared to EDP. The lower concentration still radiates that vanilla-leather-musk-civet vibe.

Generally I find this scent weird and musky, but in a good way. Very unique

ingrid.superstar

I've put off writing anything about the venerable Shalimar even though I've had my pretty little 1 oz bottle for a bit now. It's like trying to eulogize someone great -- how can mere words even do them justice?

Top notes: I get a general aromatic citrus vibe and a wallop of anisic florals.

Mid notes: This is the meta-perfume stage in which it smells like other perfume on other skin. A handsome, oily hair/skin smell sets in. Even on freshly washed skin, this stage smells like spicy cologne on a not-so-recently-cleaned leather jacket, mixed with the scent of sweet pipe tobacco sticking to slicked-back hair.

Base notes: This is my favorite stage. I get a luxe vanilla/tonka/coumarin delight. Smells also like the "char" on creme brulee.

Regardless of what perfume I'm wearing on top of my clothes and hair, I like to spritz Shalimar pretty heavily across my torso just for the small puffs I get throughout the fall/winter days when my body heat makes it bloom. A subtle, sensuous treat for myself.

Sea2Summit

As an initial impression, this is a fragrance for me to wear at home, at night.

It feels exotic and inspired by India.

In reality, if a man were to be intimate with a woman wearing Shalimar edp, he would be likely to have it rubbed off on him.

Perhaps, the Shalimar edt gives a sense of this.

The vanilla is comforting, and gives me a better night's sleep.

bissou

it is warm and calming scent. The vanilla in this one is truly beautiful.

Blueflowers

“Hi, My name is Jill, and I’m a Shalimar addict.”

I have two bottles of this incarnation, a current version (the batch code indicates it was manufactured in 2016), and a bottle I found during a leisurely inspection of my local thrift store. It was nearly full and priced at $10.99 for the 30 ml bottle. I had not, until that moment, swooned.

Basic googling leads me to believe the vintage is from 1996–not very old, but old enough to differ from the current version.

The top notes are a bit off, a bit musty—they lack the astringency of fresher batches’ bergamot blast, but Shalimar is not a one trick pony by any means, and the dry down is still unbelievably decadent vanilla-opoponax-leather-iris glory. It clouds around in a whisper of powder and smoky, non-candy sweetness.

In general, EDT differs from the EDP and extract, but retains the structure of the fragrance. It is more citrus forward, and the leather seems to balance the vanilla in this strength (I find the higher concentrations are heavier on the gorgeous smoky vanilla). The civet is less pronounced as well, which some who are trepidatious about that note may prefer.

The EDT still performs phenomenally, but in a softer, rounder way. Better for everyday wear, maybe, because EDP is a beautiful beast.

Shalimar is always beautiful, timeless and perfect to me. This formulation is no exception.

rowenaaine

This is an shortened review I wrote 12 years ago on Makeup alley but wanted to share it here as well. Shalimar EDT was my signature fragrance for a decade, and after reading the below you'll see why:

I have fallen in love. I enjoy Oriental fragrances, and was inspired to purchase this after reading the reviews. Upon first spray of the EDT, I was immediately struck by the loudness of the bergamot note. I am a fan of bergamot, and I actually have bergamot essential oil so this was neither shocking nor offensive to me. But didn't have the complexity that I wanted in a perfume. So I waited.

My commute to the office takes at least an hour, so happily, when I arrived at work the top notes were long gone. I was left with a luscious smokey vanilla, somewhat powdery, somewhat spicy, very warm and sensuous. Reminds me of Emeraude, which my mother owned, but not as sharp-edged. More rounded, more mellow, very soft but present. A very in-the-moment fragrance, that lingers and develops all day. I've had it on today for 10 hours, and while it does not shout my entrance as I move from room to room, it remains like a cloak around me. It stays near me, with my skin rather than on it. It clothes me. It envelopes me like a shawl or a favorite sweater.

I will not discard my beloved Chanel No. 5 (another discovery thanks to my mother) but it now goes to the back of the line as I delight in the wonder and enchantment that is Shalimar.

AHeartLikeMine

Begins with a strong leather smell and astrigent citrus hint. Even after several hours, I smelled no sweetness or vanilla in this. Great lasting power and an obvious classic, but not for me. Has a very masculine vibe.

klein_gluck

I have vintage EDT one, don't know the year...
It is gorgeous, warm, deep, calming scent, classic and always modern. The vanilla in this one is truly beautiful

bkaye

As a dinosaur with the wisdom that comes with it, remember that words like old ladyish and youngish are only one person's subjective opinion. As a really old person, I have the old classics as well as the Viva La Juicys in my collection and I enjoy them all. Shalimar is a nice classic fragrance that goes with the jazz age, upscale restaurants, theater, opera and country club afternoons. It is in a class along with the great Chanel #5, and Joy. There is a reason why all 3 are still around while many fad fragrances are gone. Shalimar brings back a time of gentility, dignity, self respect. My face may have wrinkles but that's just the outside shell. My soul that lives inside is ageless.

Lilacs&Lavender

Your review cracked me up, alittlebrittle. Thanks for the lighthearted dig at those who, through ignorance and arrogance, disdain their elders and criticise fragrances which fall outside current fashion. Fragrances are not age specific. They might invoke an era, but that doesn't mean that wearers are stuck in the past. Wear what you like, when you like, and rock it!

There is no better way to refute any argument that fragrances from a bygone era belong to seniors, when considering Shalimar EDT. The fact that Guerlain continues to bring out exceptional flankers means that Shalimar in all forms remains current, yet classic.

Now, where did I put my magnifying glass so I can read the next review. Oh, dear, it must be somewhere....

alittlebrittle

No review of the always-wonderful Shalimar, just a simple plea:

PLEASE, for the love of Christ(ian Dior), can we stop using the phrase “old lady”? I was going to state “in a derogatory manner”, but that’s not necessary, as this term is ALWAYS executed in this way, and I’m weary of it.

I get how we’ve got the whole world in our hands when we’re young. It’s part of discovering who we are, where our place is; we were all young once. However, take it from one who sees more and more of the “old lady” she’s going to be, in her reflection as well as behaviour, and she’s not some cardigan & Yardley’s talc-wearing old dearie in suntan support hose & orthopedic shoes, sporting a practical short perm and toting a pocketbook full of Werthers Original Toffees, next to her knitting, senior bus pass, and a Reader’s Digest crossword puzzle.

For one thing, I prefer the NY Times crossword, although it’s rather difficult, and for another, SO WHAT if I DO become this person in 30 years? I already have far too many balled-up tissues in my bag, and some stray candy that’s escaped its wrapper, and there isn’t a damn thing wrong with being her, if that’s who I choose to be. I don’t think I’ll like to be called an old lady, and may not appreciate people assuming I smell of one thing or another, but most of all, I hope that I’m so wise, loving, loved & secure by that time, my consequential state of contentment won’t allow me to give a fig either way. But it’s still not okay.

I’m not being Susie Snowflake here, longing to be heard from some didactic, self-satisfied platform of smug, nor do I care to be the voice of one group or another. I’m just tired of seeing this term, and it’s particularly grating considering how “aware” & accepting everyone is clamouring to appear in our current cultural environment. One would be instantly digitally pig-piled if they dared even hint at a firm dislike of a transgendered person’s choice of nail varnish, yet we women are STILL either tearing each other apart, without consequence or conscience, or worshiping at the altar of Kardashian (someone made them all billionaires, and it wasn’t me—enough pride in THAT statement to carry me through every moment of self-doubt until I die), neither of which gives me much hope that women will change their attitudes toward our own any time soon. As much as we like to blame men, we can be far more horrid, unfair, brutal, unforgiving, and yes, even misogynistic to/with the only people who will ever truly understand us: Our sisters.

You don’t often experience men stating “old man” derogatorily, do you. That’s because male ageing isn’t tantamount to invisibility or death, like it is for women. I’m not flying my feminism flag, as there’s a grey area I prefer, between hardcore feminism and being tethered to the cooker, however, I believe that we can effect change by changing our own attitudes toward age and each other; tick-tock, sistas. You hit an oil patch at 40, and soon you’re luging your way to “old” at breakneck speed, and there isn’t enough bovine botulism in the universe that can defy gravity’s taffy-pull.

Why not adopt some new phrasing, such as “vintage” or “powdery”? Perhaps even, “mature”, but not really, as I’ve considered fragrance to be ageless since I wore Opium at 17, Shiseido Zen at 15, and Mitsouko at 20. Maybe a fragrance is “like those favoured by women in the mid-century”? I don’t know, perhaps it’d do some good to remember that Rei Kubokawa, 70-ish creator of Comme des Garçons, and Grace Coddington, 80-something style editor for Vogue are great examples of why “old lady” has to finally be put to rest.

And if you keep saying it, I’ll find you, and smack you in the head with my coupon book ; )

Oh, and Shalimar is one of my favourite vanilla-based fragrances. Everyone who loves perfume must sample it at least once in their lifetime!

*Did I state “simple plea”? *giggle*

tyekristopher

I’m a huge fan of vanilla and i am not a fan of shalomar at all . Don’t go into this expecting a traditional vanilla scent because it’s not. I’m not saying it’s a bad fragrance it’s just not my style. It has that baby powder quality to it, not as bad as Oscar or number 5 but it has that quality to it

Christopher Cupcakes

I've recently gotten rid of all of my other perfumes and am focusing on only collecting Guerlain. Shalimar was one that I was sure I was NOT going to love. It just seemed so old lady-ish based on reviews Ive read. However, I decided to give it a try and now I LOVE it.

On first spray and wet there is something so strong that I dont like: maybe the leathery notes. I dont get the citrus at all in this.

But within an hour and on the dry down this becomes this soft, powdery scent. It's like a warming resin incense. It makes me think of temples I visited in Asia.

The dry down keeps changing, first its warm vanilla, than its this firey fesin and ends in a bouquet of flowers.

I defnitely get the amber, vanilla and tonka bean in this.

gtabasso

this is nothing like the vintage, very resinous and creamy; lots of citrus in the top that burns off to pure tonka

minnicikim

this perfume smells like a heavy talc powder my grandma used to use. I hated that smell -and stil hate it- and when I first sprayed, I returned to those times with a bergamot blast.

Generally powdery perfumes are a big no for me because they trigger my migrene unfortunately, and that perfume is, too :/

After 5- 6 hours, it turns to a good vanilla scent but I do not have that kind of patience to spray it on my clothes and wait the good vanilla comes up. Maybe I should do it at night and wear it in the morning :D

Konga5000

If you find a vintage bottle.............. oh my goodness....so worth it !

giri-boni

This is vanilla. Forget every scent you know. This is pure, natural, the pure bean. Straight from the forrest.. Not sweet. Creamy. Rich. Human. Blended with citruses and some luxurious make up. Voila. Don't be afraid of it's age. This is the refined and glamorous version of these gourmands of nowadays... The scent of love.

DomfromBE

@ JacquieDS Reformulations are not a Troll but a real issue. Perfumes are (over)reformulated due to restrictions, reglementations and greed. The less it stays or smell the more you'll buy it over and over again but they tell you it's for your safety and health. Not their wealth...
It's worst when real creations, icons of the perfume industry and history are modified to please the crowd and young nostrils.

A work colleague gave me a 30ml used edt in the pre 2010 bottle. It smells a lot stronger. Can anyone comment?

I was at the Guerlain boutique in Las Vegas two weeks ago. I was lucky enough to speak with the Guerlain store manager Juliette F. Juliette was very helpful and knowledgeable. This boutique has a large selection of both current and classic Guerlain fragrances. I sampled many of these fragrances with Juliette’s help. All of the Guerlain fragrances are lovely. The last perfume I tried was Shalimar. Amazing! Shalimar literally had me at hello. I had my credit card out in less than 60 seconds. I was going to purchase a single bottle but Juliette found a Shalimar 3 piece gift set that was the same price as a single bottle. Juliette also mailed me 10 samples of other Guerlain fragrances. I am now a loyal Guerlain customer. This boutique is definitely worth visiting. It is located at the south end of the Grand Canal Shoppes in Las Vegas. Do ask for Juliette F. if you visit. Enjoy the journey. J

I am not really crazy about the top notes in this (citrusy)... But the dry down, oh yes. It reminds me of my vanilla incense sticks (vanilla + incense = two of my favorite things in life)!
This is such a delicate, powdery but smokey vanilla. I really need to try the edp as soon as I can! I'm sure I'll love it too.

I bought the EDP first and tested the EDT in a dept store, I fell in love with the EDT instantly, so I bought one.
The edp and edt smell very similar, but the edp is louder and more potent, it has a deeper, sharper opening note like rubber?? The edt is very beautiful, it's softer but still strong (2 or 3 sprays are enough) and lasts a long time on my clothes. The insence or leather are not so intense like in the edp, edt went to drydown pretty quick which are my favorite notes, powdery vanilla. I bought both edp and edt because it's Shalimar. I would wear edp just for a special occasion because it's heavier, one spray is enough, and edt for bed time which is still beautiful but softer, it helps me to relax at night.

#1 Shalimar Eau de Toilette is my Shalimar of choice during the Summer when both the EDC and EDP are a bit too heavy. It's bright and sparkly, but not in the sherbet way that Shalimar Cologne is (one that, alas, I do not enjoy). As far as scents that I can see being closest to the vintage, this and the EDC are what I'd say are. In saying that, though, this scent is still remarkably strong (although you can't really over apply it)

It reminds me quite strongly of a handmade cleaning product my mother used to use which, funnily enough, contained citrus rind and vanilla with a bit of alcohol of some variety along with violet essential oil. The story of love and beauty that inspired this scent can be well felt. It's warm, it's sensual and it's romance. All wrapped up into one.

So this is Shalimar....wow poetry in a bottle. Complex unusual fragrance. It floats about you intoxicating, dreamy, sexy and comforting. In love.

There’s something ultra seductive about Shalimar.
She’s serious sexy, glamorous and classy.
She’s raw , intense so love her from a distance.
She reminds you that before you seek a lover in a man, be a lover to yourself....
For how can you enjoy others unless you know how to enjoy yourself?

I'm a little hesitant to write the images that this scent evokes in me, since I'm obviously experiencing the fragrance from a rather different viewpoint. But for what it's worth...
For me this scent evokes images of burning wood. Wood burning in a sauna or a hamam, or in an autumnal forest. I think that for some reason I experience the aromatic aspect of this scent the strongest. There is citrus -quite a lot of citrus in fact - but to me this serves to make the sauna/hamam image even stronger. If you have ever sat in a sauna, where the wood (used for the benches) is still giving out resin, I think you smell what I smell. The same goes with a hamam, not with a eucalyptus, but with a more citric perfume. I smell very little flowers and only a little vanilla. For me this is the smell of aromatic relaxation. Also for some reason the smell of autumn.

EDIT: Bought Shalimar Souffle de Parfum - I'm taking babysteps into the world of Shalimar :-) - and to my great surprise I very much prefer Shalimar EDT. I agree with those reviewers who say that Souffle is a different perfume altogether, not even a second cousin to Shalimar. I find that Souffle lacks almost all the aromatic qualities of the EDT, that to me, make the scent interesting. I guess I'm ready for the EDP next!

I love shalimar,it is a citrus opening that turns into the most amazing powdery vanilla fragrance. It smells beautiful. It is a very comforting scent especially if you like baby powder.Rating 10/10

It's funny that many seem to be baby powder from this. I do not get baby powder at all! If this is what baby powder smells like now, I'd gladly douse myself in it :).

I get Shalimar's vanilla mostly with powdery aspects from the iris. I pretty much love all iris scents so maybe I'm biased because I seek out iris in a lot of fragrances and don't find it to smell exactly like baby powder although it is a powdery note. Everyone's noses are different though so just gotta test it out!

I personally enjoy powdery fragrances, but find this to be mostly vanilla like I said. It's not smoky like the original, which I also enjoy, but think this is more wearable. I think a teacher could pull this scent off very well since it is kind of motherly and comforting. I can see snuggling up to a blanket that smells like this.

Although bergamot is the only citrus listed, I do get an underlying citrus blast when first sprayed, which is followed by the powdery vanilla. This reminds me of a soft vanilla cake without icing. Maybe I'm thinking of Angel Food or Pound Cake. Something along those lines. Just lovely! It's even more cake-like (to me) when layered with Al-Rehab's Choco Musk.

Let's be clear, even if this stuff was the world's no.1 man repellant, I would still love it and spritz it about my person with gay abandon. As it is, my boyfriend loves it so much that every time he smells something nice on me - something vanilla sweet and darkly smoky - he inhales deeply and says, "Mmm... is that Shalimar?". This is such unusual behaviour for him. I can only conclude that his first olfactory experience with this was so powerfully positive that, now, every good scent is 'Shalimar'. Not a bad response; not bad at all.

When I was young, I remember visiting a nursing home and there was an old woman there who smelled strongly of baby powder. It was weird and anachronistic to me. Why would an old lady wear baby powder? Well, I now realize that she wasn’t. I love powder fragrances- I own and wear many iris/orris centered scents and some are among my favorites... but this is too much of that and too little of everything else. It’s just pink powder. I have a powder scented deodorant that smells like it, and I don’t really want anyone thinking my perfume is my deodorant, or weirder yet, that for some reason I use baby powder. I understand why everything from deodorant to baby wipes to toilet paper is powder scented, because it is a nice scent. The problem is that it’s ubiquitous now. Perhaps what once was a special scent is now so over done that it can easily be mistaken for toiletry products rather than fine fragrance, and if I am buying nice perfume, I really don’t want to smell like the diaper section. I have yet to try the edp and I’m hoping that is different for me. If not, I’m perfectly happy with the Guerlains that do work for me: Shalimar PI, Samasara, Mitsouko, Vol de Nuit, and yes, even the powder bomb L’Heure Bleue. I’m still spoiled for choice!

@Phoebecat2017 -- I like your take on Shalimar EDT. I can understand how you feel and I respect that. You should try Shalimar EDP; totally different.
----Hear me out! I am guy and I had to have a piece of history in my collection! But boy, I found what I was asking for! Shalimar EDP is temperamental, unrepentant, rich with no shame. Give it a try, it might grow on you. Yep, I am a guy and sometimes I wear Shalimar, just for my personal satisfaction (I can be selfish some days).

Phoebecat2017

I can't wear Shalimar - not because I don't like the scent though. Shalimar, to my untutored nose, smells soft and delicate and feminine and I love it. It was the only scent my aunt would wear and every time I smell it, I think of her. I feel like a pretender wearing it, like I'm not worthy.

It's a ridiculous idea, but I can't rid myself of it. It was Rita's scent, and even though she's been gone for eleven years, it's STILL her scent. Shalimar is a mature scent, a woman's scent, not a girl's. But, it retains a light feel - a powdery feminine one like I imagine Jane Austen would wear.

It doesn't fit a modern woman well, and for that reason too, it is not the scent for me. It's soft spoken and sweet and demure.

I have AVOIDED Shalimar for years and years. Years ago,my nose was not ready for many scents...and I own some of those today. I fell in love with Shalimar Parfum Initial and Shalimar Initial L'Eau....so...I thought I needed to re-explore the original Shalimar..but..step by step...lol...So, I decided to go for the EDT rather than the EDP. I am LOVING this EDT !!! Amazing !
So...next step...is to get the EDP version asap.
And..a new bottle of the new Mon Guerlain,my bottle is almost 1/2 gone...sigh...Cheers to Shalimar !!

Smells like Shalimar EDP basically, just less intense. I would rather just have the EDP, as the EDT fades pretty quickly and doesn't have very great sillage like Shalimar EDP. I love this EDT... of course.. and I certainly wear it. But I don't see a big difference as others do. I actually still pick up animalic scents. Strange, considering they're not in there. This is definitely softer, and more vanillic. But there's still something there giving it that "different" vanilla scent. Whatever it is, I love it. I've had people tell me i smell like a french whore.... and oh how very offended I get! But at least it was a french one, lol. I guess that's the reputation Shalimar has (at least where i'm from,) but they can all go kick rocks. None of them even know what a French whore smells like. And who cares even if it does.. ?? To each their own. I love it. And Shalimar is genius, and a classic, always!

Shalimar EDT seems to lack what I like in the EDP. The top notes smell like incense and leather, which is almost identical to the EDP. The heart notes seem to lack the oomph of EDP's heart notes. It seems less wild, less voluptuous. Overall, the EDT is a bit thinner and lower sillage.

kristen0129

It smells woody and different from EDP, I could feel only expensive warm vanilla, tonka bean and ...leather(?) I was expecting complicated perfume of past era, but I got something very minimal, tasty and appropriate for today. Guys can wear Shalimar as well.
