Overshadowed by it’s brother, Givenchy Gentleman Reserve Privee, nevertheless they are both great fragrances, but in my personal taste, I lean towards this even more.

Givenchy Gentleman Eau De Parfum in an under-hyped dark Iris fragrance that is a mix of both Valentino Uomo Intense and Dior Homme intense. Still, it is a well blended fragrance to me, very sophisticated and elegant, much easier to wear than Dior Homme Intense, if you ask me.

So if you want to have that Dior Homme Intense experience, without smelling like a “grandma”, you can go ahead and choose this fragrance or the Reserve Privee, both are great and seductive scents with great longevity of soft to moderate projection which is perfect for those cuddle times with your girl. Overall ranking, 9.5/10.

Om3r_perfumes

At one point this was my signature fragrance. I’m a massive fan of iris, and givenchy’s gentlemen has one of the best iris notes. There’s a strong iris and powdery scent whenever you smell this fragrance coupled with a great vanilla note. This scent lasts around 9-10 hours, but the only thing holding this fragrance back is the projection. You can barely smell it unless you are very close to where it has been sprayed. A hot take i have is that I do prefer this scent over Dior homme. I reach for this scent more than I do for Dior homme. I just prefer the smell of this much more. Since this is less popular than Dior homme I do recommend to get this, definitely do try it out first. The heavy powdery and iris note may not be for everyone but I truly do love this scent. If the projection was greater this would definitely be one of my favorite scents ever.

I am absolutely in love with this fragrance😍 Despite all the reviews, i chose to go with this EDP and i do not regret it at all. I’ve smelt society and EDT intense and they are both terrible. This is a nice, powdery, dark vanilla with iris scent with a hint of a little freshness in the background. The dry down is amazing with great silage and longevity. Great for the colder days and gets TONS of compliments.

This smells like DHI during the first 20 minutes, giving those who love make-up a high dose of that powdery smell... then, it's 70% different... still powdery but a little sweeter, richer, less dry than DHI, and darker... the balance between the warmth of the spice and the more wintry powdery feel makes this fragrance more luxurious... It's very vogue and enigmatic after the dry-down, and I love that.

Test it before buying; it's not an alternative or clone to DHI.

Personally, I love this more than DHI... It's way more masculine, projects more 9/10 love it 👍

One of my favourite perfumes I have, though easily my least worn. Luxurious, elegant, and warm, Gentleman is a perfume designed with black-tie attire in mind. As such, I don't think it's a very safe blind buy, especially because it is not versatile at all. But at the right event, with the right style, it's an amazing scent.
It's quite powdery, but personally, I like that about it. It sets it apart from Valentino Uomo Intense and Dior Homme Intense, and I think it's different in a good way. I understand how this is not for everyone though.
Projection and longevity are very good too, so you do not have to worry about people not noticing you're wearing it. I love it.

I’m in love.

Dark mysterious vanille. Pleasure for the senses.

Voltoma

The iris note combines with vanilla. It's a strong scent. Creamy, powdery and a bit sour for me. It's a winter scent. I would never recommend using it in summer. It will go great outside on a cold snowy evening. Women loved this fragrance but as a man I didn't like it that much. 6/10

stanneman6

good perfume! very playfull

Aurelius Aroma

Really cloying sweetness, I don’t think a true gentlman would wear anything like this, it’s also not a suitable combination to mix the iris with the strong vanilla, feels off, I would stay away from this fragrance.

If you like strong vanilla and iris, then go for it.

Ars Amatoria

My boyfriend wears this and it is just divine on him. We went fragrance shopping together and chose this unanimously as his scent. It's so delicious. Smooth, creamy orris, vanilla and tonka with benzoin and patchouli base notes. Neither of us smell pepper, the lavender doesn't stand out alone but it blends well with the other notes. It has a wonderful depth and lasts all day and into the next, and doesn't stop smelling so damn good. A fabulously sophisticated masculine fragrance.

H-rim

pretty pretty it's a sweet perfume but not as sweet it's a false calm like me the iris and the sweetness of the tolu balm with vanilla is just magnificent yes it's for MEN sir not for a woman in a man's body

NoirMemoir

Givenchy Gentleman EDP is in the same family of fragrances as Dior Homme Intense, they share many similarities but also have some slight differences that might make them cater to different people.

While both heavily centered on the note of Iris, with its obvious and distinct powdery facet, they do differentiate a little. Dior Homme Intense comes across as a stronger, more brash fragrance. The Iris in DHI is more makeup-y, more velvety, more colorfull. Gentleman is a bit calmer, more serious and here the Iris is supported by the resinous qualities of the benzoin and tolu balsam. The resins in the background give a hazelnut-like feeling to the fragrance as opposed to the velvet and chocolatey Iris you get in Dior Homme Intense . The lavander doesn't freshen up the mix, but it does give it a slight touch of soapy airyness but the way the lavander works is more like an influence rather then a distinct note.

It overall feels more grounded and laid back, and more mature but its still a modern DNA don't get me wrong. I can totally see why DHI is more popular and will be more appreciated by a larger crowd, especially with the younger demographic, because its a more attention grabbing and attention seeking Iris fragrance.

There is no doubt in my mind that when they sat down in the conference room and discussed the brief on Givenchy Gentleman EDP, they had Dior Homme Intense on the table as a point of inspiration. If someone passes by and you catch a quick whiff of them wearing this fragrance, it could very well fool you into thinking it was DHI tho.

cynogriffin

This one actually really surprised me. I was expecting to not really like it and was putting off trying it, since I’m not really a big fan (yet) of Dior Homme Intense and that over-the-top powder-bomb, crushed makeup tablets iris scent. But to my surprise, and delight, this is a completely different fragrance altogether. Yes, it does have a subtle backbone of that iris/orris, but it is less powdery and more dry floral/earthy here. It’s blended with some very complementary and balancing notes that give it some real depth and warmth that really mellow out the iris and keep it from becoming too much or taking over. The opening is nice and fresh with an aromatic and subtle juicy citrus feel. But this one is all about that dry down, it’s pretty incredible. Of course the iris/orris is there, but soon this warm vanilla and lavender start to wrap around and envelop the scent, bringing with it some warm sweet spices with the cinnamon and cloves. There is this aromatic incense note (balsam) that lingers around in the background and keeps you intrigued and coming back for more to try to figure it out. There is, indeed, a powdery note there in the base, but by no means is it overpowering or super prevalent. I think if you are unsure about powdery/iris fragrances, this one would be excellent to get your feet wet and see a really well-blended example with some other notes in there so it’s not just an assault of powder. Definitely a complex fragrance that has a lot of depth and intrigue. The spicy, sweet, and warm undercurrent keeps me coming back and keeps me interested.

I think you can rock this as an everyday driver that will work just about year round and for most occasions. Maybe not the best choice for beach day in the heat of summer, but other than that, I think it is quite versatile and definitely signature scent worthy. I think blind buy might be a little risky, since you kind of have to know what you are getting into with the iris/orris stuff, but I think this one is more on the crowd pleasing side and, once again, would be a great one to try if you are starting to branch out and get interested in the floral/iris/powder masculine fragrances.

Performance seems to be pretty good and on-par for an EDP. Decent projection for the first few hours and I can easily smell it and appreciate it on me without going overboard with sprays. Longevity is a solid 10 hours and above for me, so really pretty impressive in that regard.

I like this one miles better than the Gentleman EDT, which I didn’t much care for and thought it was pretty middling. The EDP here just has so much more dimension and intrigue and would easily be my pick between the two. The only downside that I have is that, unfortunately, on my skin in the deep dry down, it has some kind of overtone that I catch whiffs of and am not quite fond of. I can’t really tell if if is the resins or patchouli or what, but something just kind of throws it off for me in the later stages, and so for me, it’s not a full bottle purchase.

7.4/10 - pretty impressive, unique fragrance with good performance, just not for everyone and has a sort of weird twinge on my skin that knocks it down a notch for me.

Forand

wouldn't add this to my collection

DBlack47

I enjoyed this scent, and got both the EDP and the Boisée as a birthday gift. I do prefer the Boisée as it’s more masculine and refined. To me, the EDP is a good everyday wear that sits awkwardly in the realm of Iris of the make-up kind, but it is intriguing. My dad tried this (late 50s) and I realised it is a mature gentleman everyday scent.

The fragrance is refined, smooth and well-blended and will be a terrific buy if you’re over 28-30. The longevity is great at around 10 hours, projection is very good, further than arms length and the sillage is decent. Haven’t received many compliments, but dad has had many when he’s had a few spritzes from my collection.

a good cologne but makes me think of a child trying to smell like a man

ivanthegreat

Very polarizing scent, definitely appreciated more by the fragrance community. This was the first fragrance I ever blind bought mainly because of the rave reviews from GentsScents but also because I thought the bottle looked cool. Huge mistake. This fragrance made me hate iris heavy fragrances. I tried so hard to like this… I wore it several times and never enjoyed it. Very strong performance with strong strong strong projection. Not exactly a room filler if you go easy on the trigger but definitely can be if you want it to be. My parents both told me they really disliked it and my mom said not to wear this around my baby brother because it might bother him. And I agree with her the iris in this is nauseating. Maybe this iris is easily tolerated and enjoyed by the seasoned fraghead nose but it can definitely be offensive to the average person’s nose.

Jeshuwin

Used to be my everyday in Fall 2022.

Despite being a very powdery and floral scent, the lavender makes this a dark mysterious scent. This is a really rich smell and I prefer this one to Givenchy Reserve Privee, (which in my opinion smells like an expired version of this one).

Honestly this is a masculine scent, but I feel like this could be unisex as well. Depends on the nose.

Overall 10/10

Rob-B-29

To my nose this smells like a stronger Dior Homme Intense they're not the same but a very similar iris note. I actually love and prefer this over dhi as have them both. It's very iris lipstick makeup smelling with a bit of vanilla in the dry/down. It also long lasting on me. 9/10

vladdarius

Absolutely love this cologne 10/10 best Gentleman

Letmeregister

Extremely powdery and sweet, it is hard to actually distinguish individual notes.

ElNino-7-

Really is a superb fragrance. I don't like wearing it in the day though, tried it a few times and didn't enjoy it. But on a night, I wore the hell out of it in winter!

The quality of Givenchy scents is A1, they're a level above the likes of YSL.

KarlK

Beautiful scent. On me, it's very powdery, but I don't mind powdery. Pretty long lasting scent, but I feel like it attaches more to my skin than my clothes.

steviedee

I get some Tom Ford Noir vibes with this one, but way more wearable, good too!

chucc98.1

Had for 2yrs now. It's my evening go to scent

krajrlnnnnnnn

Great fragrance. Starts with a iris note and for some time that's all you can smell, but after a while, a really pleasant vanilla scent appears. Great dry down.

meatmuncher2213

Love the dry down on this fragrance, just wished the dry down had a little more projection. I'm wearing this fragrance as a 24 year old, good beginner friendly winter/fall fragrance for the designer price point.

ApolloEyes7

I LOVE this fragrance. Ordered Boisee. Then went back to the Macy's I was at to spray on the EDP and refresh my memory (had the whole Gentleman lineup sprayed on me confusing lol). It's the make-up + lipstick one, it's like Boisee but more deep. Of course, Boisee is newer but I'm discovering them all now. Something about that rich lipstick and makeup smell. The richness or darkness is the masculine component, hard to describe but it all powders together potently. Night out smell, but I'd wear it every night and day lol. This one will be my next purchase. ☺️

Lasse_korsholm

Givenchy gentleman edp is a dark and warm scent i really love it, i dont know why but im getting a strong licorice note out of it

FragranceZoe

A powder bomb. Great scent

wjxavi

how many sprays?

nicholassua

@vladdarius: EDT Intense is creamier, fresher but also carries the Gentleman DNA as powdery, semi-sweet and warm

the EDP is too dark, spicy, much powdery and you will find nothing much changes from top to base

vladdarius

I'm between getting this or the EDT Intense for winter, which one do you recommend?

stilldragoner

One of my absolute favorites, it’s powdery and sweet but has enough warmth from the spices that it’s not “too sweet” for a man. The resins add just enough of a woody quality to balance it all out without making you smell like an actual tree, if that’s not your thing. Every time I wear this I’m in a good mood because it’s so comforting and I get whiffs of it for hours without having to sniff my wrist every five minutes like a madman lol, it’s very enveloping. Can’t recommend this enough!

DaveCave

This one is my favorite out of the gentlemen line! Just wonderful!

TWN2RBO

This is the male version of DHI, this doesn’t make you smell like a woman’s make up bag filled with lipstick. It’s a sexy / spicy / powdery iris that is name fitting. A real gentleman’s scent. Very unique and formal feeling. I came across this 4 years ago at a fragrance discounter store in the mall and purchased it on site after smelling it. However, I’m not feeling it much anymore. I have gravitated towards more darker , incense / woody amber type scents. Maybe I’ll come back to it later on down the road. I would much rather own this over DHI though. Out of all the DHI type scents, Valentino is the best imo. I would give this fragrance a 7/10 overall. Longevity and silage are great and quality is amazing.

meatmuncher2213

just bought this as a teenager. amazing amazing mass appealing scent probably comparable to it's flanker, reserve priveè but less smooth and more striking as a fragrance. definitely a 4.1-4.2

lauri.suurmaa

Bought just a bottle, am disappointed, unfortunately lasts on me only ca 30 min. Watered down?
Prada L´Homme Intense performes a bit better.

ZiggySmellsGood

I have many Iris fragrances . I’ve had this in my collection for 2 years and slept on it because it was a little too sweet . I just went back to it this winter and I love it . IMO this is an iris fragrance that tried to be different by making the vanilla more prominent . This one does start a little sweeter but I love how it dries down into a dark, powdery, semi sweet and spicy fragrance . I can smell this when I wear it which means it has good performance . I love the Dior Homme line but even DHI becomes close to the skin after hour on me . Valentino Uomo intense and this one create a scent bubble which I love . I where this more casually where I’d where DHI or VUI in a more intimate setting .

This actually smells really sexy on a woman. Have your ladies try it out fellas. Thank me later.

Love this fragrance. My absolute favourite for fall / winter season.

just smells bad in my opinion, very bitter and old. smells like boiled vegetables and pepper mixed with slight vanilla. not for me at all.

Cozy Up for Winter

I am loving Givenchy Gentlemen EDP (& the Privee Reserve but that is for another day.) This is cozy and warm on my skin. I love the iris -- the fragrance stays iris dominant for most of the wear, it's just a matter of what notes are decorating the iris. First the iris is sprinkled with black pepper and a hint of cinnamon --wow does that work. I wish that stage lasted longer, actually. Then the tolu balsam makes the iris rather forested, which is also gorgeous. Lastly, and this is the longest phase, the iris is surrounded by vanilla, tonka bean, and a few shards of benzoin in between. This is mostly in the end an iris vanilla fragrance. The very drydown is vanilla, with a ghost of iris and earth. It verges on being sweet but it never quite goes there. Tactile wise Gentlemen is a soft and warm scent.

If it matters I'm a middle aged lady who has a penchant for vintage style fragrances and for the most part stays away from gourmands.

Big Nose Jake

A fragrance I have owned for nearly 2 years now and this is my impression of the fragrance.

In the top notes I get mostly a high quality, powdery and rich iris which blends seamlessly into the clove note which I have not expierenced before in perfumery atleast that I cannot remember, accompanying this unique blend is a mature lavender and soft clean bergamot backed up with soft pepper, my nose is very sensitive to pepper and often I find many doses of it give a "singy" vibe to me but this pepper is too quiet for that.

The dry down approaches my skin after about an hour and a half of wearing, it is hard for me to decide whether I like the opening or dry down more.
The ambery balsams move in while the powdery iris-clove note quiets down and of course the bergamot and pepper are non existent by this stage. Accompanying this amber-balsamic note is a velvety and milky vanilla that I absolutely adore.
-A comparable vanilla note would be that of the dry down in the Amouage Interlude line.
In addition to these main players of the dry down there is some tonka bean and a gorgeous but soft-spoken patchouli.

The type of person I would understand this fragrance to be best suited to would be a gentleman. ( Who would of guessed.) Its unique but not in an attention seeking way, although it does have quite beastly performance, particularly projection!
Very classy and mature.
A younger iris-lover would be better directed to Dior Homme edp instead as it lacks the balsamics which make this fragrance more masculine and mature.

In my overall opinion this fragrance is extremely high quality for its price and deserves at the very least your respect if not your money.

This is a room filler monster, my colleague has it and the moment I open the door to enter the office I can easily and clearly smell it, it lingers for long.

Etxrnity

This is definitely my favorite one in the line. Very mature and seductive scent. 🔥

sniffer 65

Lots of really great reviews below, so I'll keep mine short. First, you have to like powdery (not lipsticky) iris and vanilla to like this. If you do, you will be very happy. Second, this is a quiet, mature man's scent. Not a macho, bragadocious guy. While it could work on a first date, it is better for a man who has been in a long-term relationship/marriage, where there is trust, mutual support and steady love. This just feels solid and comforting. Third, it blends with the skin chemistry of the wearer, becoming interactive, not sitting on the surface projecting only what is in the bottle. Finally, I don't see this as gourmand, because it isn't a foody/desserty smell. While it is sweet and contains vanilla, it has a warm fougere feeling, if not a fougere scent.

dzonza

Easy to wear, evening winter fragrance for office I recommend!

djigoio

I think this is what l thought Dior Homme Intense would smell like after smelling Dior Homme parfum for the first time.

Let it dry. First it's a burst of iris powder, but it will start transforming into a peppery, woody and spicy scent little by little. Performance is superb. If you completely dislike the powdery part, just try the EdT Intense.

Behindthefog

My go to for cooler weather. I love a good powdery iris. Most perfumes don't last past 4 hours on my skin. This lasts 8 to 10. Almost has a creme soda vibe to it. Not necessarily a compliment magnet, but I love it,nonetheless. Not synthetic smelling at all. I've owned this and dior homme intense and ended up keeping this. Cheers

Gwynnbleid

I ordered this one by mistake (misclicked on my order of Gentleman society). Even though it was different than the Society flanker, the opening was barely noticeable for me. After it dries down a bit, I noticed the pepper, the Iris, and the woody notes. It smells really good and lasts very long on clothes. However, I don't really smell it on my skin after wearing it for a while, even though I've been told that it smelled really good to others. It's a great fragrance with a great smell and a nice spicy alternative to Gentleman society.

Aryaberzan

Possibly one of the best cold weather fragrances out there for me. I have Boisee, it’s lovely, more mellow but not as half as beastly. I sampled reserve privee, again lovely, mellow and boozy, but does not compare to this. I feel it kind of makes other iris heavy perfumes redundant. Of course Dior homme is a masterpiece, but this will overpower, with class. I don’t believe this is a blind-buy. You must be into iris/vanilla.
Signature Nathalie Lorson vibe to it, could be her best for men yet. (I haven't smelled encre noir)
It does smell like lipstick, like a powdery make up bag zipped open in your face, but still masculine. It lasts overnight on skin and forever on clothes (I have an old bottle, gift-set back when perfumes were cheap). I believe this is half niche quality at a bargain and one of the rare fragrances I will always repurchase to rotate in the winter.

Addotti

Just bought this perfume and all I get is the powder and nothing else, please don't blind buy this perfume

Semsir

Omg yes yes yes. Immediate 10/10. Easily top 3 designers i have purchased.

jonathan santana

Odiei, senti uma mistura de maquiagem com azeitona, acho bem desafiador para pessoas mais jovens.
Eu gosto muito do Gentleman Boiseé e não curto muito o Gentleman Reserve Privê.

smyl3x

An amazing fragrance, I’ve smelled all of the gentlemen fragrances and this one stood out, I don’t like the Privee, its just not a good blend for me, I really love boozy fragrances tho. Be careful with this one, because too many sprays could make you feel really nauseated.
Definietly not for everyone considering its iris-y and powdery, leaning towards a more mature mens perfume.

PULPUL75

Amazing scent I got 50M and I’m gonna have 100 next time 😍

Givenchy Gentleman edp.
I was enjoying the afternoon and passed by one of the stores I like most in the Forum, the Perfumarias. I had heard the advertising for Givenchy Gentleman and decided to try it. Wow, just hit by an iris beam. Initially it seems similar to something I know and really like, Dior Homme Intense. But as soon as you spray it, the fragrance shows that it is something very different. It's not iris, it's orris and they have black vanilla, patchouli and tolu balm, which give it a darker and heavier look. A warm fragrance, with black pepper, resins and aromatics all complementing the fragrance. They have a refined smell, not to all noses. Those who try this perfume will get something vanilla, but not too sweet, and will have tolu balm and patchouli in the base.
I consider this perfume to be almost beast mode. Fixes and projects a lot. It lasts for more than 12 hours and initially projects for well over two hours. It launches gusts of fragrance when we think it's gone. I have days, some days I really like it, almost addictive and others I don't really like it. On clothes it lasts for days. On the skin, take a shower and there are residues. It will also divide opinions, whether you like it or hate it.
Aroma 7.5/10

I wear this exclusively to church. I save the best for God.
I also wear Prada L'homme to church, another masterpiece blended by angels.

PierreLouis

Nice and warm but to me it smells too similar to CK One Shock, $30 for 200ml, to spend money on this.

sethro77

I love reserve priveé, don't get me wrong... It is a wonderful scent, that I also wear... But Gentleman Eau De Parfum (this fragrance here) is one of my FAVORITE winter fragrances... I get so many compliments, and people asking me what fragrance I am wearing when I wear this. My skin tends to make scents a lot more creamy, and soft (not projection, but soft as in rounding out edges to scents).... The vanilla and tonka are front and center when I wear this, the cinnamon, cloves, and balsam add this holiday warm vibe that dances behind the vanilla and tonka, while the pepper and lavender give it this UUUMMMF forward that it needs to sit on, and punch through the air so that the holiday magic announces itself to everyone within an arms length of me... lean in for a hug, and the orris wraps the scent around you with a blanket of powdered sugar, and just a hint of mom baking sugar cookies in the oven for christmas... you won't want to end the hug.... TRULY a lovely scent for me. I hope it is never discontinued

alternateu

My favourite from the Gentleman range, hands down. It's very nice, classy, warm, unisex, sits close to the skin and is so gorgeously blended. There isn't one note to me that jumps out and screams to be noticed. Quiet luxury for men in a bottle.

JusttheFactsMan

#435 in my "Tour de Fragrance"

Remove the booze from Reserve Privee and you have this. I gave away my bottle of Reserve Privee as it was just too boozy and thus "alcoholic old man" in my book. The cinnamon and clove reminds me of a chewing gum from my childhood called "Clove." Fortunately it is not that prominent. This is a warmer, darker less powdery Dior Homme Intense. The performance is very mediocre for an EDP, which I've seen with other Givenchy scents. If this is 15% it's just barely 15%, so I'd spray skin and clothing. I think it's tame enough for office use, elegant enough to be a good formal scent, okay date scent, probably not for the kiddies

Maturity, dark, and heavy. There aren't better words to say about this fragrence.

An easy blind buy what a fantastic mix!

eb0la

Do NOT blind buy
The powder scent is most overwhelming and it seems like the only note that lingers, maybe a little vanilla too.
I don't get any of the other notes, not even cloves nor cinnamon.

kundi301

Really like this, opening is spicy but dries down to a beautiful vanilla-powdery scent. Soft yet masculine. If you don't like powdery scents this isn't for you. I don't really get any cinnamon or the other notes listed as the iris and vanilla pretty much overpower everything else. Slightly cloying.

I think sweet perfumes like this do not fit my style. This one gave me a headache too, it is too much for me I guess.

Te huele rico

Omg I really don’t get how people likes this…..
I just got it blind buying because of the good reviews and I totally regret it…… smell like grandma house covered in baby powder … the worst thing about it it stays forever… tried to washed it off it didn’t work
Be careful with this …

Nawaf.669

Very maculine, smells great, amazing performance

go for it.

mason2192

This stuff really grew on me.

Blind bought for a good deal about a year ago, and although I liked it, it began to collect dust on my shelf. Recently I returned to it, and OH MY GOODNESS THIS STUFF IS HEAVEN.

I am 22, and I love to wear this. Smells smooth, masculine, with a dark chocolate vibe I am obsessed with.

9.5/10. Classy, sexy, amazing fragrance. Autumn/winter, probably suitable for both day and night.

eleccyman1

Lord help me, I’ll probs get a load of slag but, am I the only person finding this awful? For me it is too ‘pretty’, too safe, bordering on generic, nothing akin to the original at all (which was kind of why I bought it…I thought it would surely have some semblance of the original masterpiece!), it’s kind of neither here nor there nor anywhere but skin. Five minutes after spraying it, it’s vanished unless I take a deep hard whiff up close!
It also has far too much ‘talc’ vibe for me…nothing cuts through the softness.
If you enjoy cosy and intimate you really cannot go wrong with this incarnation but there are far better scents of that ilk out there.
I’d give the original 9/10…..
This one, seriously, I’d give a two. And those are for the quality glass it comes in!
Huge, huge disappointment!

Larinus

I describe this perfume in two words : dark and ancient.
The most prominent note here is the dark patchouli that smells like old books combined with the dark balsamic note of tolu, what makes it only suitable for special occasions at night and colder evenings.

Kyotokko

I recently tried out Gentleman by Givenchy and was quite pleased with the scent. It had a light, luminous quality that I really enjoyed, giving off strong citrusy notes. It starts off with the strangest candy- like scent I've ever noticed in a perfume. The scent does stay on for a while, but not as long as I had hoped. It was gone after around 4 or 5 hours, which isn't great for a high-end cologne. Even so, the complexity of the scent still impressed me and it's definitely something I'd try out again.

AaronT

Which more expensive scent does the exact same thing as this but with real naturals, real iriss, vanilla, tonka bean and Myrrh?

WHICH ONE DO YOU PREFER? GENTLEMAN OR GENTLEMAN?

Edition 1974 versus edition 2018
Givenchy is an enigmatic perfume house. There is no such thing as a bad Givenchy. While some are kind of average, some others are true masterpieces. Some are elegant and lightweight, and some others are real scent bombs. This dissertation may lead us to an obvious question that I have seen being argued passionately more than once:
- Which is the best masculine Givenchy fragrance to date? .... for a vast portion of the fragrance community, that question is equivalent to "Which version of Givenchy Gentleman do you like the best?"
I guess the opinions may be divided between those two main streams, one from 1974 and the other from 2018. Some people will choose "Gentleman" and some others will prefer "Gentleman" 🙂
If you ask me, I may have to think for a while, but probably I opine it to be "Gentleman". I also would place "Gentleman" in the second place 🙂 🙂
It's a real gentlemanly trivia.
Whatever your opinion, my opinion or anyone's opinion, almost everybody agrees that Gentleman EDT 1974 and Gentleman EDP 2018 family, are very well-designed fragrances. Both of them have strong "personalities", are very aromatic, and quite alluring, with near "beast mode" performance, fantastic blending, and a simple but elegant presentation. And their similarities end there.
In between, a new Gentleman has been edited (EDT 2017) but it seems to be quite forgettable when compared with the other two. The new 2022 editions are not very different from the EDP 2018 edition. They have been baptized Gentleman Givenchy and Gentleman Givenchy Réserve Privée. They really seem to have a lot of acceptance but are clearly "marketing" fragrances designed by the Marketing bosses at LVMH.

The 2018 EDP edition
Olivier Cresp and Nathalie Lorson are far from being fragrance nose rookies. Between the two of them, designer landmarks like Angel, Midnight Poison, Encre Noire and Bentley for Men Intense, were created. Givenchy decided to create a brand new "Gentleman" line instead of bastardizing their icon masterpiece from 1994. And they were clever enough to keep both lines in production or at least available for purchasing. That admirable state of mind had already given benefits when the "Les Parfums Mythiques" series was created.
The 2018 EDP has probably generated enough quorum to be considered the best designer fragrance from 2018. We, amateur fragrance lovers, tend to create anchors to reference a new perfume design, and even on the very same day of the fragrance presentation, the unavoidable comments of it being similar to Dior Homme Intense or to Valentino Uomo Intense. I must admit for myself that Gentleman EDP 2018 is quite intense but follows a different path from those two distinguished predecessors and competitors.
The notes listed in Fragrantica are almost the same as those published at the Givenchy site; however, if you look at the official ingredients list, you may conclude that other notes are used as well to compose this symphony. Those notes are at least light citrus (bergamot) at the top, moderate to heavy cinnamon and moderate cloves in the heart together with benzoin and tonka in the base. Limonene, citronellol, cinnamate, cinnamal, benzyl benzoate and coumarin are ingredients that do induce some of those "added notes".
Givenchy classifies this Eau de Parfum as a woody-floral Oriental.
Gentleman 2018 opens with a spicy-floral accord of lively pepper with the gentleness of aromatic lavender and a touch of bergamot freshness.
Contrasting notes battle in a floral heart. I thank God for this perfume not having a very lipsticky iris, although this note makes the fragrance follow the actual trend for distinguished designs. So, the iris is blended with warm balsamic and ambary tolu balm, powdery violet-scented orris, fragrant sweet cloves and sensuous bittersweet cinnamon, giving the fragrance a masculine pitch feeling.
The base blends woody earthy patchouli with the sexy gloomy sweetness of black vanilla, some hints of sweet resinous vanillic benzoin and the bittersweet almond facet of coumarin (tonka).
The dry down shows some resinous spicy hints but consists mainly of warm sweet cinnamon and still dark and masculine vanilla.
In summary, I would say that the House of Givenchy presents us with a very good perfume with this 2018 EDP edition. It leads us to forget the 2017 EDT flop. Undoubtedly it must be considered a sweet fragrance but without any gold lingots or hand grenade complexes. I also judge it to follow a different path from Dior Homme Intense and Valentino Homme Intense. Some other comparisons with fragrances like a few Prada juices or Zara 9.0 just do not make any sense in my opinion.
Givenchy declares Gentleman EDP 2018 as an Oriental fragrance with an explosive signature capability.
I tend to agree but I will only give a definite opinion after the following math analysis:

Opinion on this alluring Gentleman:
Good presentation, very good overall scent, pleasing a lot of people! Above average performance. Pricing is still a bit expensive. During 2020 the online price started to come down and met the price level of Gentleman 1994 edition.
Recommended? I suggest you try it before purchasing it.
Is blind buy worthy? Yes, because it is such a divine scent. Also, you must feel comfortable with its type of scent, and evaluate if it fits your budget.

Givenchy is one of the great French fragrance houses in my opinion. I've never been disappointed. Although I typically don't care for gourmands (and I consider this a gourmand) I like this. Not enough to purchase a full size bottle, or wear regularly, but as a scent to itself. It has a toasty, smoky sweet something going on, it's tasteful and not immature, or overly sweet. Performance is excellent.

hc123

I find all these iris type fragrances smell amazing but there is A LOT of overlap. This gives me major DHI vibes in the opening but is slightly heavier in the drydown. I would say if you already have a chocolate lipstick iris scent go with the Reserve Privée or Uomo Intese, those move a bit left and right of DHI

Forest_being

Me and my partner both use it and at this moment it's my favourite perfume of all times. I like givenchy's perfumes both male and female. This sent smells dark and rich, mature and elegant. I get the best experience when we go camping and this smell mixes with the smell of campfire.
As for notes - I smell something woody, a bit sweet, but not overpowering. It changes on the body to be more like burned wood and sweet liquor. I don't smell coffee in it, but somehow it reminds me of a sophisticated coffee drinking event in a cozy air bnb when the moon is shining through a rustic window.
It stays on the skin and clothes for a couple of days, but it's not spreading to the whole room around the person. It's intimate, but when I touch my SO the scent transfers to my skin and stays there.
All in all I definitely recommend this perfume if you're a nature loving person with a bit vampiric aesthetic.

AllThatJaZZ

This is one frag that is versatile enough for year round use with minimal sprays during warmer weather. The name says it all… very gentlemanly and mature. The best one from the whole Gentleman line, has a great mature powdery note which a lot of other frags get wrong.

nirvblakr

This is one frag that has a better drydown than the opening. How does it smell? Opening reminds you of smelling the makeup kit of your mom and the drydown is applying the compact, foundation or the facial powder in your face. It does smell similar to Dior Homme Intense with the iris note responsible for the lipsticky smell. I have learned that assessing the fragrance doesn't stop on the opening but until the drydown. If you don't like the strong opening, wait for the vanilla powdery drydown. This has very good performance and can last long. Not advisable for a respray as it might come out cloying. If there is a need, I suggest you spray 10mins before meeting anybody so that they'll smell the drydown rather than the synthetic smelling opening. This has a mature scent for 40s and above that's why it is called Gentleman and not Juvenile. Very good for formal occasions and cold weather. Good for airconditioned rooms.
Bought this blind based on exemplary reviews but it is not my cup of tea. The bottle though looks handsome.
Everytime I hold the bottle the song of PSY "Mother Father Gentleman" plays in my head.
Used this to church yesterday and my daughter was asking for the name of the frag. She liked the smell. She doesn't usually comment. Guess frags really depend on the smeller.

ryanttchan

Smells very mature and u really have to dress up for this fragrance. Don't think I really like it as I am still pretty young and I rarely wear a suit, smells kinda like a man at their 30-40s

ChooChooSmellington

Deodorant smell in the opening, drydown is very nice tho

Rogerant

I habe few iris scent and I get the comparison with dhi in the opening. However I think that tjis is more an everyday scent. Not to be dressed up but more versatile. Can be worn all year round. It's just a little more juicy and woody in the drydown. Could be a signature scent for sure. More I wear ut ghe more I appreciate it. And it's a real performer last and projects a hood while

CodyJr

Bentley for men smells better, lasts longer, projects more and is twenty percent of the price. They smell extremely similar. Look at the note breakdown.

kittenpawz

This is very mature and manly but nothing over-the-top and nothing extraordinary. Initial spray from the tester smelled like a clean straight out of shower gentleman with a lot of testosterone. Forget Dior Sauvage, this right here should be considered the essence of true manliness with maturity as the main component, and in Gentleman EDP there's plenty. It has absolutely everything I as a lady wouldn't want in my perfume - except the vanilla which I think is so subtle in the dry down that trying to pick it up becomes an quest of its own. I feel like with the right skin chemistry, on a man it could be stellar, making people wonder where his natural skin scent ends and where the perfume begins, granted it's applied in moderation, and I don't see why one would do otherwise - it seems very intense and still projects well (albeit on paper) after several days. I reckon it should last throughout one's waking hours no problem.

Great as it is, I still have some reservations and wouldn't want to smell it all the time, even on a man. It leaves a trail which is more appealing to my nose than smelling it up close, probably due to patchouli-ness which doesn't seem so parasitic and completely out of place in a men's fragrance. I'm extremely sensitive to that note to the point where if it's present I feel like it stomps on all other notes (maybe that's why this isn't in the least sweet to me?), but this is the nicest patchouli fragrance I've come across so far, so if you're repelled by *that* note like myself, maybe still give it a try. It's well blended and classy, not dirty.

From a woman's perspective, applied in moderation this fragrance is like the comfort of your husband's hand on the small of your back, silently saying, "I've got you"

Sardelokoutis

Incredible fragrance, this has lasted me 20hours on skin and has a strong sillage that lasts many hours. If you want to smell like caramel and sophisticated then this is the fragrance for you. To put into perspective how good this is, it has gotten me compliments at a funeral

EJJ

Powdery sweet vanilla. The powder note goes from aromatic to dense and that is what makes the fragrance so good.

It's strong but it allows the powder to calm down and work in unison with the sweet vanilla. A very nice blend. Would be awesome in a suit for the office.

If you're young guy in a T-Shirt, this might not be it.

Mrigank

I finally found my signature fragrance :)

harkiratsaran

This is the worst fragrance I have ever smelled.
As soon as you apply this on, it smells like a cardboard that had been thrown out in rain for months. Other smell I would compare this to is like a cleaning product such as phenyl used in hospitals.

dann.martin

The first time I tried this fragrance at a local store, one thought seized me as a lightning bolt: “I need to make this scent mine!”.
I bought a sample of it this winter (I’m writing from the Southern hemisphere) and I sprayed it on my arm: I felt a sudden urge to bite my flesh!
It is delicious. Sexy. Classy. Warm. Mature. What else could I ask for in a perfume?
A rush of endorphins in my brain.
The only other winter fragrance that rivals this one that I know of is Egoiste (I’m exluding Coromandel, of course, that heavenly creation, which is hors concours; the most wonderful fragrance I’ve ever experienced in my life).
Like Egoiste, it is a scent for the “warm” gentleman, not the “cool” ones.
I go so far as to acknowledge that this fragrance played a role in my own self-understanding process, as it helped me to understand what kind of man I am: warm, welcoming, loving.... and yet, not one bit less masculine for it.
Wear this thing and open your arms.
Show people what a joy it is to be in the company of a true gentleman.

Remmious

So I’ve worn this a couple of times now and it’s growing on me. The warm spicy part took me by surprise with the clove and cinnamon right out of the gate and holds on throughout. It makes it interesting though. When the sweetness and iris comes in shortly after the opening it blends nicely with the spices. Was on the fence at first but learning to appreciate it. I also have the EDT Intense and really liked it from first sniff. They are not redundant with the Intense being fresher, aromatic, slightly soft and woody. I will update once I’ve had a chance to wear this more. I don’t regret buying it but may not be for everyone as it does have some uniqueness to it.

Edit: spent some time smelling the atomizer and wearing it a few more times and the initial punch of spice has seemed to calm down compared to my first impression. Could be letting the bottle sit helped or it’s my pallet grew, either way I’ve come to really like this. I sprayed on my arm to get a sense of it in the air and it’s so smooth and pleasing. Glad I gave it time.

Niko_v

Some chick in the club told me I smell like a sexy and mysterious middle-aged man while wearing this. I'm 21...

Afc_Croatian

My colleague wears this at work.
He leaves a scent trail wherever he walks, he sits beside me and I constantly pick up on his scent.

We had training for a whole day, I couldn’t stop smelling him for 6 solid hours as he sat at my table. Amazing stuff, amazing longevity and projection. I can’t get enough of that cinnamon vanilla and subtle pepper, very close to being gourmand and edible smelling.

I need my own bottle of this. Trust me just buy it.

Mr_G_75

I have this and 2021 version of Valentino UOMO Intense. I don't see the resemblance. VUI is so much better! I also have DHI and GG EDP Boisee. I have sampled GG EDP RP. TBH the top 4 most "reminds me of" don't smell like GG EDP to all. The notes are similar but, the scent profile is very different. This frag IMO smells more like Bentley Absolute. I enjoy this fragrance, don't get me wrong.

d1n0_v3Lv3T

this scent smells very good, but honestly on me it was COMPLETELY gone after 3 hours, to the point that when i smelled where i sprayed it up close after 3 hours it was literally like i never sprayed it there in the first place. me personally, i'll pass on this and get something better for the same price...

vbs221

While sampling Bentley For Men Intense, I was trying hard to figure out what it was reminding me of. I couldn't come up with it, until I read Givenchy Gentleman EDP and it makes total sense. BMI is basically this without the iris (but still smooth), or you could think of this as BMI + DHI.

So, if you enjoy this but find it too expensive or not as readily available, I highly suggest BMI as an alternative.

MarkoPeeko

4 sprays at 6am.
Still getting a good waft at 5pm.

This stuff absolutely slaps. Arguably, the best EDP I own for projection and performance.

Outstanding.

Abracadravra

Drydown on skin will remind of sweet play-dough but on clothes won't pick up any play-dough. So don't put it on your skin.

hussrahal

I’ve worn all, and this is still easily the best gentleman hands down.

LoverBoy2001

I'm new to the fragrance game, and Givenchy Gentleman was my intro to the note 'Iris'. I guess I'm an Iris lover. This fragrance is the MOST addicting scent I've come across. My only "love at first sniff" so far. The Heaviness of this scent is exaggerated, this fragrance is sweet and powdery but has a cleanliness to it that makes it much more versatile than what I heard from reviewers. Definitely more of a sophisticated scent, but can be dressed down. NOT a compliment magnet, Iris seems to me to be a niche note when it's the prominent accord in a fragrance.

Greatnessss

it's a fashionable perfume.
It's definitely similar to Valentino Uomo Intense and Dior Homme Intense, but I think Gentleman EDP has its own unique vibe. It has a great chocolate-iris backbone, which makes it perfect for those of us who are a bit more reserved and expressive.
It also has great longevity and projection without being too loud. On top of that, the bottle is sleek and elegant.
I think Givenchy has done a great job creating something that really captures what it means to be a gentleman. It's a versatile fragrance suitable for year-round use, except in extreme heat.
The performance of the new releases is more than enough!

Rdk479

Something is off for me, might be the cloves. I like Boisee and Privee better

ShaneL02

Have approximately 85ml left of a tester bottle give or take, if you'd like to swap let me know. I've spent time trying to really understand this scent and I just can't hack it. In the UK

Don L3ONE

Classy, rich, sexy and only for Gentleman. For me this fragrance does not change. The notes you get from the beggining stay till the end. Black pepper, Orris/Iris root(NOT IRIS FLOWER!) and Vanilla, combine giving a spicy/woody Marshmallow which reminds me off the play-dough I used to play with nursery which smelt so nice I wanted to eat it! Beautiful and my signature scent so far in my fragrance journey. Projection is very moderate, however village and longevity are very good. It is meant to be that type of intimate fragrance.

Apache1830

Very good fragrance, the iris/vanilla/Tolu balsam combo makes it dark with a touch of brightness

I find it just a touch too sweet for my taste

8/10

Demus Anum

I feel that the overall Gentleman EDP smells like Gentleman EDT Intense with a bit milder woodiness but a bit stronger spices. The scent is more opaque than both the EDT and EDT Intense, but it's a very mild opacity. No single sharp note comes out too prominent. Soft sweet scent of wood + iris + amber. The iris scent will give a light leather scent as well. Still aromatic spicy woody iris scent easy/versatile to wear.

Overall, it's a very gentle scent. You can wear it for many occasions. Cool/ air-conditioned and hot temperature outdoor without terrorizing everyone around. Tested with my coworkers and no one said that it was pungent or had strong smell. The dispersion/projection is probably about arm's length, leaving the sillage just a faint scent in the elevator or hallway. It lasts/persists all day and nitght.

Karlstad

I love this so mach
First it smells fresh spicy bergamot but suddently all that freshnes turns into a sweet powdery dark vanilla with iris and amber
Smell 9.47778899
Projection 8
Longetivy 8
This one is relly good its worth the price.

Kiran4deep

The longevity is superb.. I love this on my man.. Sharp in the beginning but dry down is the best part.. A little sweet in dry down... Though my husband still prefers Armani Acqua di gio' absolu... If you want your girl to love you hard get the Gentleman,
& when you hang around with male friends prefer Armani one

Scent-Freek-287

When I first got into the fragrance game, I didn’t like this and only liked a very specific scent but since expanding my horizons and revisiting this amazing scent I’ve fallen in love! I can’t get enough of this! I smells very close to Prada L’Homme EDP Intense but it’s a much more mature version of say.

nicholassua

@rmSX13: orris is Iris' root... also powdery smell

rmSX13

How come no Iris note is listed though it has a strong Iris? Love this perfume

Aidam

First cologne, love it.

Smellybutgood

Wore this last night and the wifey slid those panties right off for daddy 🫡. This is an intoxicating, powdery, masterpiece.

All of the Givenchy Gentleman line fragrances are amazing and this is no exception.

wo0berry

givenchy scents should be worn with the precaution that YOU - the wearer could be in the limbo whatever chaos that little bottle contains great smell with even greater performance

SympathyForTheDevil

Tho I don’t like it he opening so much, drydown is amazing and it projects. Applied 1 spray in my local Douglas at 17.00(5pm) went trough night, morning shower and at 9am I can still smell it on my left hand as a skin scent(16h mark) with gentle whiffs from my steering wheel. And frags usually don’t perform that well on me even certified beast modes.

Beniamin

Simple but in the best way. Warm, spicy and sweet.

Marsellko

It smells like medicine, and smelling it within an hour will cause a headache.

There is no reason anyone would want to smell like that, it might be suitable for very old men that people avoid because of their smell

Anam727

I do adore this on paper as it becomes more vanillic on it however on my skin the black pepper just stings the back of my nose a little bit and makes the smelling experience slightly worse, I still enjoy it though.

ShaneL02

The way this fragrance smells of clothes as it dries down is probably the most obnoxious smell I know. And it's strange, this fragrance is very hit or miss for me. Sometime a real nice creamy vanilla ambery Iris, other times that bergamot and lavender note just repulse me from the start and then all I can smell is this bitter black pepper carrot-y iris smell. Sometimes I even get a cola-y smell in the opening. Performance is long lasting and projecting. I like the boisee version alot more

robbeatz

Not for me. I have Valentino Uomo and Uomo Intense. This smells nothing like Uomo Intense.

I like Uomo Instense but I do not like this....at all. It smells like baby powder. And Im not a fan of it.

I keep seeing people offer trades. I will 100% trade this cologne because it will hardly ever get worn.

Abracadravra

If you own EDP then don't need Prive, Dry down is so similar smooth wood powdery with just hint of chocolate in Prive.

sugar magnolia

I'm a female and I wear it.
For me it's a powdery, smooth, gentle smell it does have masculine touch, but I don't mind it...
On my skin, that is very oily, the black paper and vanilla in combination make beautiful symphony..I don't have refine nose to pick other components in this parfume but thoes two make great show on my skin whole day.
I do get quit enough compliments, and lot's of people were surprised when they hear that it's a men parfume.

poppybois

💟This is a negative review, from somebody who LOVES the way Gentleman EDP smells. Please keep that in mind.

I really don't think it's fitting for anyone under 30. It's very potent and very powdery. Apparently it's an iteration of the original one from the 70s...the more I used it and the more I realized how powdery it smells, the more I felt like it IS from the 70s. I was treating it like a daily fragrance and after a couple of days I started to realize that the reactions were overwhelmingly negative. Nobody would say it but I could see it on everyone's face when I went around them, it was just too much.

Whether I was at work, at school, running errands, anything really, I could tell that nobody was really prepared to smell something like that. I have no reason to lie or exaggerate - there were times where coworkers looked like they were holding their breath to avoid smelling it. It wasn't just other people. Eventually I myself started to feel like it didn't fit a single situation I was in.

I stopped wearing it after a month and haven't touched it in 4 years. I really don't care about smelling good to others, if I love a fragrance then that's enough. But I DO care about people around me being comfortable. There's really no other way to say it: people around me were regularly uncomfortable whenever I wore this fragrance.

I've since thought about when/where it would make sense for me to use Gentleman EDP at 26 years old. I think it'd be an elegant choice to wear to a black tie event or a gala. Also, a single spray on the chest would be nice on a romantic date night, but only with somebody I'm close with already. Outside of that, not much. I've seen too many people call this fragrance versatile and it kind of bothers me. If you're under 30 I really feel like it offers no versatility at all.

Itay2005

I love this one so much, disappointed that I can’t wear this fragrance any time for any occasion…

girldeadbug

I used to love this scent, but smelling my luckyscent sample on my skin, it’s just meh now. The light sweetness is nice, a touch of yum. The lavender is top notch and well-blended (I hate lavender so that’s saying something). I wouldn’t buy it now though. Nice maybe for an entry level fragrance to train your nose to appreciate different types of notes blended together (fruity, floral, gourmand). But for a seasoned fraghead I don’t think it would stand out in a collection against other designers and niche.

ZiggySmellsGood

This is one is warm, creamy and smooth from beginning to end . Off the top it’s sweet, spicy, with a powdery, warmth ! As it dries down it becomes resinous with vanilla that is dark and not overly sweet ! It stays close to the skin . The vanilla in this is to die for . When I apply my neck a little gets on my shirt and I can smell this days later when I do laundry . This isn’t just a smooth Iris fragrance, this has some of my favorite vanilla I’ve ever smelled ! I highly recommend this ! I can see why people relate this to DHI or Valentino Uomo Intense but it is different which is why I recommend it even more !

Scent = 3/3
Performance = 2.5/3
Wearability = 2.5/3
Value = 1/1

Perfumers of this fragrance speaks for itself. It is smooth, versatile warm weather scent. Would re-rate the wearing experience after some decent amount of wears.

jasontallwood

A quick description - think a moderately spicy vanilla ice cream, it's masculine don't worry Paco Rabanne didn't make this after all the One Millions and so forth came out. It's smooth and seductive. It has great longevity as well. I had to wear it twice to really appreciate it.

There were a few reasons I ended up getting this and I can understand why so many recommended it on youtube. A huge pull factor was one of the perfumers who worked on Black XS (2005) by Paco Rabanne worked on this and of course the comparison to Dior Homme Intense I didn't have to think twice to check it out.

The first impression
When I tried this on in a store what I was expecting was totally different from how everyone described it at first. Online everyone wouldn't shut up about the life changing note every fragrance has to have... iris. In this case, the orris which is the root of the iris flower. However, if you have never smelled anything similar what you get is this really warm spicy opening where it kind of threw me off guard. Yes, there are spices mentioned but the first time I tried this it threw me off guard how strong the spices would be. It seemed a lot of people skipped past that. The vanilla, the tonka bean, and everything else didn't pop up at all until about that hour mark to me. By that time I was out walking my dog and I smelled my sweater again thinking to myself .. no way this can't be the same fragrance No sweetness, no anything. I remember that I had recently washed my sweater and thought was this the laundry soap? Thankfully no. The opening for some reason which sounds hilarious that it reminded me of being in the back of my mom's van driving somewhere on a hot day. Seeing those red whatever fabric is used in the back of my mom's van, whatever the back seats are made of. That you only experience once though so don't worry the fragrance gets better. It's vanilla done right. Not super sweet and unisex like the original one million by Paco Rabanne. My friend's mom it reminded her of a South American dessert with the cinnamon and vanilla notes used in this that she couldn't put her finger on.

After wearing it for about a month between other fragrances this is what I think of it.

the opening
This is spicy, dark, and sweet without leaning feminine to combat the sweetness. All of them work together so it doesn't become "headache juice". Afterwards. Some words I'd describe this scent as are slow, smooth, and seductive with this aromatic quality to this. The vanilla in this I feel the reviewers didn't mention nearly enough. It's just iris iris iris iris to my ears. The vanilla and other notes creating the sweetness are the stars of the show. It comes off like vanilla ice cream which the ethylvanillin molecule in this is known for. We're all born experts on iris so I'm not going to mention it. The vanilla kind of comes off the same way Parfums De Marly Layton does. Of the two I'll take Gentleman any day of the week even if Layton was the same price or even $20 in a shop someone is closing down I'd still justify the money to get Givenchy. I like my darker and oriental style fragrances more. You could be different. For those wondering. I've gone through two samples of Layton with online order samples so it's far from a casual spray or two or hate towards something overrated I haven't tried without getting off my phone or computer and running to the store and trying it.

The dry down
The dry down kicked in after about an hour. The spiciness starts to soften where it's not as extreme and you have this calming and uplifting cloud around you that can put you and others in a good mood. It's very creamy from that vanilla, powdery, smooth, and sexy. I can understand why they call this gentleman now because of that first impression I couldn't understand in the shop why anyone would call this gentleman with my first impression being a car air freshener on a warm day, but no after that first use, I certainly see it.

Longevity? - I put this on at 9:30 pm after a shower and let this scent free lotion absorb into my skin for a half hour before I sprayed 5 sprays of this on. It is 2 pm the next day and I'm getting subtle whiffs of it. This is most likely from the ISO E super in this to boost the longevity and projection which is my understanding. ISO E super loves our body heat so move around and watch the scent reappear. those numbers for longevity are after a first full wearing so this is when we are extra sensitive to fragrances and pushing the 17 hour mark. The only one that will appreciate it is me at that point unless someone is inches from me so clearly if I needed to go anywhere the following day after that "17 hour mark" I'd need to reapply it. However, on clothes, this lasted days.

This can be easy to wear. Not most blue fragrances or Dior Homme 2020 easy but in the winter or any cool night this will shine. Thankfully it's not challenging to wear like Gucci Pour Homme (2003) or the most overpriced niche fragrances people get because a moderately attractive girl who on a thumbnail has her cleavage almost popping out was bribed to say it's good. The age I can see this working for is practically everyone. I could see myself wearing this in high school.

I find this has a sexiness to it where you can wear it on date night or clubbing pulling everyone in towards you. The same way that Oud For Greatness by Initio does. Everyone will tell you the same about the time of year. However, if you absolutely had to wear this in the summertime. Wait an hour or so for it to dry down to tame some of the spiciness on a blistering hot day.

This is not a blind buy recommendation. If I was going to show friends in real life I'd get them to try this in person if they lived nearby. However, check this out in a store. Spray it on and give it about an hour or so. You'll make the people who work at the store just as happy if you come back and buy it as you would the same second. If you don't live near a store buy a decant online which is a small sample bottle of it for those new to fragrances. If you enjoy fragrances such as Armani Code (original) for that dark and smoothness to it (gentleman EDP is smoother), Parfums De Marly Layton for that similar vanilla note in it, Initio Oud For Greatness for how it pulls you in. Of course Dior Homme (original / intense), Paco Rabanne - black XS, and One Million. Usually, if a fragrance has a lot of vanilla in it I probably won't like it. If you don't care for vanilla try the other flankers (versions) of this such as boisee or reserve privee which focus more on chocolate in the boisee or the subtle whiskey and chestnut notes in reserve privee. Chestnut can smell similar to Nutella a few people have claimed. However, reserve privee I heard doesn't have the greatest longevity.

In my collection, this fits right in with my other amber fragrances by Issey Miyake. Noir Argent especially. Which I do prefer but it's splitting hairs. Of course armani code if I wanted no spiciness at all. Of the three I'd pick Noir Argent most days unless it's 25 or 30 degrees out. I like this so much that I probably won't get Issey Miyake Nuit D'Issey EDP or Zadig And Voltaire This Is Him. Unless they were at an amazing price.

Thankfully it's not a gigantic bottle height wise, it's about the size of Polo Green (Ralph Lauren) and it's a bit of a weird shape. Would I buy this again? It's really grown on me so I'd say yes. Especially since the original bottles of Black XS are getting harder to find and I've yet to give the newer batch in the obnoxious Pure XS style bottle a try of Black XS (2018)

Phil413

I save this work of genius for church. Smells like it was blended by God himself.

BeDeli3

ONE OF THE BEST!
So well constructed, you don’t have here a really citrusy opening, it’s more subtle, the lavander note stands out over the bergamot note, makes perfectly sense because then come the iris with the spicy notes, clove and cinnamon, (you’re not gonna smell clove or cinnamon separately, they’re so combined that become like a base that match perfectly with the iris note and the vanilla and tonka ) and then the patchouli and benzoin brings a bit of complexity for the fragrance! It’s a masterpiece! Really different from the average!

joe_frag

This smells so masculine. I pulled a trigger and purchased this at Sephora during the Black Friday sale. Totally worth the money. I got tons of compliments and questions of what I was wearing.
This lasts decently long (around 7 hours) before I have to re-apply. I think that is considered good enough for a fragrance
The projection is great too. You will definitely get noticed.
Trust me.

Bertolli

When I bought this Eau de Parfum I was in doubt between Dior Sauvage, Dior Homme Intense and some more famous parfums. But this one I'll definitely buy again, or the Gentleman Eau de Parfum "Reserve Privée" Givenchy which is a newer edition.

This one taste really strong, last long, spicy, intense, and even after the first top notes the mid- & base notes are still strong. That is what I like, that after the initial flavor there's still much left.

I must say it's very personal with fragrances, often it depends on your skin profile. So you'd better try it out somewhere.

Mohamed_1

i have never wanted a fragrance so bad as this smelled it in the store and went back again and again and again, smells so luxurious, sexy, gentelmeny, you name it, i dont know for what situations it should be worn but its a mustt own
currently saving for it im inlove with it!!!!!!!!

Danbegood

A word of advice, apply post shower and before clothing can come in contact with the scent. It remains quite strong on clothing. Last thing you need is a conflict scent the day after. Apply sparingly.

Nickolas Fragrance

This sucks, it's so rough and cheap smelling, I'm glad I got this for free, because it smells like those DHI clones sold at counterfeit markets. It's the nasal equivalent of putting a teaspoon of flour in your mouth, due to the powdery mess in this fragrance. Even after a month of letting this 'grown on me', it just gets more sickening. Awful execution.

Miamitcrs55!

Ahh let me start of by saying this if u just buy a sample of this u will not get the full story of this fragrance . this is a frag that needs to sit with ur collection . you have to truly get to kno this scent . Such a beautiful fragrance Iris, tolu Balsm laying on a bed of black vanilla with cinnamon running thru the heart .

Kainoa08!

It’s is dark , sweet and powdery . Very high quality . My only complaint may be the Iris ..as in most fragrances not made by Prada… can come off like lipstick or makeup making this a little more feminine . A very similar scent would be Issey Myaki Nuit Parfum. It has the dark vanilla vibe but with some woods in place of iris . You can usually get it for a few dollars cheaper as well. In any case this is a very good scent for fall/winter . The whole Gentleman and Gentleman only lines are both exceptional

Une Belle Prunelle

@Bigmike650 No it's not redundant at all. They're very different. Tons of people say they're very similar but I disagree, only the opening is sort of similar. Once the dry down comes, they're completely different fragrances.

Bigmike650

Is it redundant to own this if you already own Dior Homme Intense? I heard this is Givenchy’s take on Dior Homme Intense but a more toned down version. In other words DHI is a much more powerful fragrance. Thoughts?

Scentsibilities

This scent is a masterpiece and bears resemblance in my opinion to a awesome niche scent. That scent is midsummer dream by Roja dove which also utilises Orris root and has fresh notes surrounding that however that's fresher than this and more versatile however this is pretty versatile just not in hot weather.

4dri3n

Chocolate Lipstick

harkiratsaran

It smells like a medicine in the hospital. Nothing special in the fragrance. What is going on with designer fragrances?

JustHalfling

The opening kinda smells like those Gummy Hamburgers you get at Halloween 😆

(They were always my favorite 😋)

RockNRoller96

Almost unisex, yet leaning a bit more to the male side. Very mature scent, in my opinion. Didn't really like the opening but the drydown was very warm, rich and pleasant. It had a certain sweetness to it, but not in an annoying sticky, candy-like way. It's just super warm and rich. Great for a long walk on a cold fall/winter evening. Great longevity, OK projection.

Very close to Dior Homme Intense, or maybe a sweeter version of Dior Sauvage Elixir.

Jonathanelsher3

Just bought the bottle after trying the sample. really satisfied

Blizznakov

I would love it even more if had better projection. It's not bad but it need more. I think it is within arms reach. But the scent is amazing. I think it's better than Dior Homme Intense and Valentino. I also smell dirty iris in the Givenchy, but it's not listed in the notes here. The bottle is really good. Longevity is 10 hours or more projecting as mentioned above for 2-4 hours and becomes weaker after that, but you will feel it the whole 10 hours. The scent is amazing and even you read description you can't imagine it if you didn't smell it. The price is fine.
I can't compare it to "Reserve Privee" and "Boisee" because i have not smelled them yet

I am experienced and i always buy original fragrance.
I only rate fragrances which i tested for at least a month in different environment and with different people. Also i am spraying them on my girlfriend (she hates it) to test if i go nose blind to them and to see if it feels different on someone else's skin.
I always give my honest opinion.
Greetings from Bulgaria.

Shon LV

It seems it has new bottle size 60ml. Does anyone know is it the same scent or reformulated?

anatta666

this is great but i still like the boisee version better

Gammergq

There is similarities DHI but to my nose this is a more versatile smoother version of Bentley Intense For Men I have always thought this and my suspicions where confirmed when I realised this scent has the same perfumer Nathalie Lorson nevertheless a quality scent which unlike Bentley Intense which I own and only reach for this for special occasions like weddings, family functions etc this could be applied for even more dressed up occasions like date nights, nightouts etc

ZoobzFrags

What a wonderful scent. I just got my bottle and it's love at first sniff. It smells like cinnamon sprinkled rice pudding. It is somewhat unisex, but still leaning more masculine. This is my very first time wearing this and I don't have the longevity and sillage info yet. I will update soon.
Update 5 hours since I sprayed it and I sprayed 16 times, and it's still going strong. This has better longevity and performance than some of my niche colognes. Good job Givenchy.

Phil413

This is the second time I went from being disappointed in a blind buy at first but later falling in love,
Know what I mean? First time it happened with The One EDP.
I think it's partly because you have a preconception in your mind of the scent profile.
So at first this Gent EDP was okay but didn't blow me away. But about 2 weeks later I have returned to it and it is now in my top 5 ever. It's beautiful, soft, creamy with a hint of spice. Givenchy nailed it.

Chesco

lipstick Iris + Cherry Musk (Benzoin) + Incense + creamy orange Orris Root + touch of Cinnamon + touch of Black Pepper + calming Lavender + dark sweet Tonka smallest touch of Bergamot + smallest touch of Cacao powder

Blast of rich gorgeous lipstick Iris on the opening, followed by a Cherry note from the Benzoin resin.
The Iris richness in fragrances tends to fade down into the other notes, which this also does.
The Benzoin added here is actually the strongest note of the fragrance from top-to-bottom dryoff.
The Tonka note gets stronger in the dryoff and becomes very dark designer smelling sweet.
I love the Opening, and it smelt sexy and luxury, but the End dryoff goes into the direction of smelling like Gucci 'Oud Intense' due to the Iris fading and the Benzoin and Tonka becoming the strongest smelling notes.

It's a 'Good' fragrance, i'd wear it, but i'm not obsessed with it as i have other fragrances i'd rather reach for. I find Benzoin and overly sweet Tonka a bit cloying, and i don't have an addiction to those notes, especially since they are the strongest found here.
But im going to consider buying this if found at a massive discount anyways because Iris is my #1 most beloved ingredient in perfumery, and it would be nice to have this in the collection.
This also doesn't project, but lasts as a powdery Benzoin sweet Tonka skin scent.

3.5/5 Woofs!

MarkoPeeko

A shame to read some of the reviews on longevity below. I came here to review the opposite after wearing this to the office for the first time today.

Maybe I’m lucky as far as my skin DNA and my bottle goes. This juice absolutely bangs. I picked up a set in the NY sales, let it rest and came back to it today. Performance is sublime. 5 sprays have lasted all day. I usually spray around 6am. It’s now 8pm and I’m still getting the odd waft.

Projection is fairly strong off my skin. It could have been the amount of sprays. This thing works wonderfully with a bit of heat. The pepper, vanilla and iris have gone full send today. Spicy, sweet and powdery.

An absolute triumph from Givenchy.

Fahrenht

@Prunel. I humbly admit you are right.
I did some research. Tried Neutrogena Norwegian hand cream on the top of my hand and applied a small amount of Givenchy EDP on that (after rubbing in the cream for 30 secs and letting it sit for 30 secs). Its lasting a few hours so far. 2-3 times as long as I got before. I'm not new to frags. Its the summer here in NY. I figured my skin was moist enough but in my 40s, so its drier than it used to be. Been deep into frags the last couple of years. Was only motivated now to figure out the mystery of performance bec the EDP is so good and your post and the numerous reviews on it that say it has good longevity so was puzzled.

Prunel

@Fahrenht You're just unlucky honestly. Skin chemistry is not cool when it doesn't work for us. On me typically Valentino Uomo Intense smells absolutely aweful and doesn't last at all, while I know it's a big performer for most people. But, on me, Givenchy Gentleman Eau de Parfum lasts 12+ hours and has a very good projection. So it's not really the fault of reviewers, it's sadly about skin chemistry. Or maybe you sprayed a faulty unit.

Stimul

I am seriously thinking of making a present for my man with this frag that I truly classify as a masculine one. However I like it so much on myself that I voted here for unisex sharp and maybe I would pick it up occasionally. It is masculine indeed but in a very sensational way.

Fahrenht

Not sure about the reviews here who say they have great projection and longevity. Most reviewers say its a fail which likely led to the Privee release. Though that unfortunately suffers similar problems. This is one of the best DHI type frags in the game. The balance of notes is brilliant, utter elegance and class and goes in a different direction than DHI. Its a beautiful masculine scent. If only it had any performance. Its basically gone in 40 mins. There is a faint powdery skin scent after that time that is barely detectable. It had a lot of potential but doesn't project or perform no matter how many sprays you use. If you collect frags to have on your shelf and enjoy the smell every once in a while alone in your room, pick this up. Its a must have. If you are interested in wearing this for a night out or in any contexts with a +1, its a hard skip.

Austin17MaC

I am not a fan or VUI or DHI but for some reason I like this one, perhaps because of less iris. It smells really good, to me very similar to prada luna rossa black which is one of my winter go-to fragrances. I would say it’s ideal to wear on a winter night, it has good projection and safe blind buy. 9/10

hussrahal

Divine, beautiful scent, might even like it more than Dior Homme Intense, definitely much better than Valentino Uomo intense, this opens up very nice but doesn't blow me away, the dry down however, is 10/10, unreal how good it smells, so sweet and powdery, must own.

Prunel

That's a great fragrance. It smells a bit like DHI but definitely not the same fragrance. It's not redundant at all to own both. In terms of performance this is good, and it definitely will depend on how much you spray for this one. If you overspray this is very annoying for others arround you, if you're just using 4 sprays for indoors I think it'll be great.

Edit : after trying it more, I'll buy it soon. I wanna add that only the early opening smells like DHI, other than that it's absolutely not the same. Same with Valentino Uomo Intense. Gentleman is very different.

monsieurmujtabahussain

@neo009 definately woody/vanilla when it's dried down on skin

neo009

I don't get any vanilla or sweetness from this fragrance, I mostly get a dry earthy woody a little bit smoky, which reminds me of zirh ikon, I wonder about the reviews that say vanilla or iris sweetness, I don't get any sweetness at all

chucc98

Great cologne my day to day go to in winter

monsieurmujtabahussain

Get the Narciso Rodriguez for Him Bleu Noir Parfum instead. It's more potent, colorful and flamboyant version. This Givenchy is dryer and more "boring" in comparison.

claress

I brought the tester strip I sprayed it on home with me.

I'm such a rookie with men's perfumes so I can't give much insight, but this is really nice, the type of scent I'd love to smell on a man. Nothing really special in the beginning, every other if not more male fragrances smell like this to me, but still a really pleasant masculine perfume. Maybe a teeny tiny bit too sharp for my nose but nothing too serious to make me dislike it. A like based on the first day of the tester strip.

However, two days later the drydown is so yummy I have to upgrade my "like" into a "love". A soft, sweet, comforting very incense-like smell.

doodlesondope

@newbie-in-frag(ame) I was doing the exact same thing yesterday. Temperature here is also 24C. If you say you were listening to Unplugged at the time, you're gonna blow my mind. Lol.

As for the perfume, for whatever reason, I can't smell the iris all that much but the bezoin/balmy/resinous notes are very prominent. Smells like something I'd wear if I was wearing a suit which rarely happens though. Will probably overspray this to death in winter. Of all things I can smell notes that are similar to Bentley for men intense. Not saying they smell similar per se but the have commonalities.

newbie-in-frag(ame)

It's 24ºC. I'm listening to Alice in Chains. I'm wearing this on my right arm. This smells wonderful.

franchizzy

Very resinous, great night fragrance or going out scent for cool summer days and especially nights. Kinda reminds me of a “not in your face” version of Tom Ford Tobacco Oud which I think was discontinued. I like this over Prada Intense because to be honest I do not like the patchouli note in there. Compared to a Valentino I can certainly see the similarities but this has more vanilla with a prominent lavender note. I think if you will not be to eventually find this get the newly released privee but this is gem imo. Get it while you can.

xvvtsx

Was at Sephora today and decided to give this a go on my wrist
Initially I'd only imagine it as a generic woody fragrance, then came the balsamic notes from the cinnamon and tolu

Not my kind of fragrance but I can imagine someone wearing it to be in black suit and tie
Smells like a mature, refined gentleman who isn't what he seems to be on the exterior (that little tinge of balsamic spice)

Kuldeep S

Sweet , gourmand , woody generic fragrance. There are many similar fragrances in the market

TafsirulHaque

similar to dior homme intense

MrSerious96

This is a masterpiece of a fragrance!
I postponed leaving a review on it because I was afraid I would not be able to do it justice, but I really want to let everyone know that it is a masterpiece.

It is definitely iris and vanilla forward scent that is powdery, dry, balsamic-sweet cooler weather fragrance in the mould of Valentino Uomo Intense, Dior Homme intense, Prada L’homme Intense, but it stands out from them with a perfectly balanced opening that is warm, balsamic, iris and vanilla forward but also fresh - slightly citrusy - very uplifting and soothing, cozy, elegant and sophisticated.
The main warm, balsamic, vanilla, and powdery iris notes persist for a solid 4-6 hours and then the iris starts to make way to the warm, balsamic, vanilla notes that just pamper your senses for the remainder of the fragrance’s life which is around 10-12 hours on skin with good projection and forever on clothes (about a week).
Good value for the price (even at full retail).

I love the aforementioned iris forward fragrances very much but I still find Givenchy Gentleman EDP to be the best of them and that also includes Gentleman Reserve priveé which I fing to be more similar to Dior Homme Intense and lacks the amazing Tolu balsam lingering sweetnes of the EDP.
Definitely a more upscale fragrance that can also be used for treating stress and PTSD (allegedly) and can represent a cheaper alternative to psychologists. With that being said do avoid using it in the sweltering summer heat otherwise you can be charged for attempted murder.

It is a stunning fragrance that everyone should smell at least once.
So enjoy it while you still can and grab a bottle!
Edit:
After a few years I still love Gentleman EDP, but I strongly believe that Dior Homme Intense is the best Iris fragrance on the market (I haven't tried Dior Homme Parfume so I can't judge it).

yesplease

Opening is stunning, masculine and definately black tie type of fragrance. Vanilla in the drydown is one of the best there is. I got many compliments, men and women asking what it is. I got more than 10hrs of great projection, even more on clothes. Price is proportional to what you get. 10/10 for night event wearing during fall and winter. Would not recommend for day wearing, just smells like you are trying far too hard.

hellofrank

This is a good one.
Some reviewers below mentioned soapy smell...and they are right...
Very similar to the good old English soap 'Pears' (the transparent one) all the way.
if you like Pears then its all yours.
Not so classy(due to the soapiness).
Also has very close similarity to Bentley Intense Man(also a Nathalie Lorson creation) with its incense note.
No issues with projection or longevity which are really good.

hussrahal

Literally magnificent, lasted me 8 hours, everyone was asking me what I was wearing.
I'm quite new to fragrances, I have about 10 bottles accumulated over the last 2 months, but this is a 10/10 and I like it just as much as Dior Homme Intense.

Shogoki

Got a decant of this and it's not bad, actually. The tonka bean - black pepper - vanilla combo is a good one, with a touch of Iris mellowing up the package. Reminds me a bit of CH Men Privé, but lighter and more floral.

mdfarid

Nice scent to me. Sweet spicy and powdery. Good projection.
Overall (my rating): 8.8/10

GreeBri

Vile. Absolutely vile. Black pepper gives it that incense like feel which is headache inducing. I am not sure what people are really liking about this fragrance. Thank god got a sample did not blind buy. For those expecting Iris from this, it will disappoint you. Incensy and Spicy throughout with a bit of sweetness in the dry down. Hate this.

BdosMandinga

I like it, but now that Reserve Privée came out, I would definitely choose that over this one, Reserve is just better

torturedsoulboy

Not bad but a few things:
1. Reserve Privé is better
2. Valentino Uomo Intense is better
3. You can get whiffs of kalamata olives from this one.

lister

This version of Givenchy Gentleman is very smooth, crowd pleasing and follows the mordern trend. For those, who enjoy Dior Homme intense and Valentino Uomo this would serve as a good substitute. Valentino Uomo has a licorice vibe and stays linear, while Givenchy settles to a synthetic spicy skin scent. Dior Home is more articulated, intelligent and has almost realistic iris vibes...The base in Gentleman EDP is not appealing and smells cheap. Had to resell my bottle.

Splashyminion

This is very smoothly blended. Nice and warm while being a bit powdery and soapy. This is what I wanted my Dior Homme Intense to be. It retains that iris and punches it a bit to make it a bit longer lasting. Very true to the name Gentlemen.Got compliments

MarkoPeeko

@willnpc40 wish I’d read your review earlier. I’d have taken it from you, but I’ve just bought a 100ml gift set.

This works for me. That said, I’m closer to your Dad’s age than you are.

Scottydj

Love it or hate it but I'm disappointed :( willnpc40 summed it up well. Don’t buy full price

willnpc40

Wow...I was expecting more...MUCH more. Honesty I'm not sure I would ever wear this. Actually, now that I think about it I know I wouldn't because I have 10 other colognes I would rather wear, and I just blind bought a 3.4oz due to reviews, so it will probably be sold on Ebay or something.

This is dark....and dated IMO...smells like something that came out of the 80s or 90s. Smells like something my Dad might wear, hes 80... I'm 47 and would rather wear Prada L'Homme Intense any night of the week instead of this. Such a shame...

3/10 Very disappointing. Dated. Not sexy.

Fragrance Ikigai

A fantastic rendition of a fragrance. Well blended. Not so versatile but elegant in its own rights. Grownups would appreciate this. 8/10

tomas.kuska

In my opinion, this perfume is one of the best from designer fragrances. Its beautifully balanced, warm, longlasting with nice projection. Good value for the money.

*loves_shoes*

This is just a comparison to Uomo Intense.

At first, it smells almost identical to Uomo Intense. However, when it dries down it loses that special something from the beginning that Uomo Intense retains throughout, something aromatic is lost in this one. It dries more ‘perfumey’, and becomes more mainstream, whereas Uomo Intense retains that niche vibe throughout. This also doesn’t last as long as the Uomo Intense. Still a great fragrance. Still unisex, and I would wear it, but I wouldn’t choose it over the Ui.

dmd63

Tested yesterday evening on my forearm.

Sprayed a lot, yeah.

I just have to say: superior, super, superlative!

Strong, powerfull juice. Still this morning the scent was there, after bath also a small hint. This is very, very good.

Great projection, great smell, just divine. Has similarities with Bvlgari black, i think.

ThatMakesScents

Smells like cheap shower gel fragrance with horrible performance.

Received a sample from Givenchy with the new Gentlemen release.

aqua_de_la_vita

The only reason why I could consider Valentino being close is the powdery vib. However Valentino has more of a sweet floral base from Iris which is much closer to Dior intense. That's my opinion on that!
About this juice, Givenchy almost always comes out with a cologne that smells good and has the quality without having to break the bank.
At first sniff, I definitely pick up that sweet aroma from Orris combined with vanilla and tonka bean. The depth of this amazing juice comes from the tolu balsam as well benzoin. There a good base of spicy notes coming from the pepper and gloves just enough to give this juice several layers while it comes together on your skin.
Longevity and Sillage is above moderate..more on the high end.
This is definitely more of a fall and winter cologne. Much more suitable for evening not during the day at the office. You don't need to spray this cologne too much, it might come across as being overbearing.
I will always keep this in my collections..9.5/10

purplenoon

There is a really beautiful powdery quality to the iris in this fragrance that suggests smooth, gentlemanly cool. This is a sophisticated nighttime scent that I can imagine on both a well-put-together Millennial and a hip man in his forties or fifties with an annual membership at the local museum of fine arts. The combination or orris, cloves and cinnamon is really beautiful, and lends this scent a playful, conversational quality that is supported by the warm vanilla in the background. While I do feel the scent leans formal, I can also imagine myself wearing it to the bar and sweating it up on the dance floor, especially in cooler months. On fresh spring and fall days, this would pair beautifully with a black leather jacket; in the drydown particularly, the main iris accord is dirtied up by something a bit earthy, probably the patchouli, which gives this scent a little more of a "bad boy" character. And then, in the end, instead of fizzling out in a confused cloud of notes, Gentleman crystallizes as a peppery iris. What a stunning final statement -- and with eternal longevity to boot!

I am absolutely partial to a sweet masculine frag, and adore that there is no hint of woodsiness to be found in Gentleman EDP. It would be an absolute love for me if not for the opening, which has a note that I can best describe as spicy, but which comes across as way too sharp and almost fresh rather than warm on my skin — surely, the bergamot-pepper combo? It takes about ten minutes for this note to begin blending with the ambery vanilla and iris, but I can’t help but feel that the central accords are somewhat bruised by those spices in the opening. That said, this is not a dealbreaker by any means — in fact, I can see myself picking up a full bottle of this — but it is ultimately a like and not a love for me.

I swear I’m trying to be respectful here, but I don’t know any other way to describe this fragrance other than it smells like Play-Doh.

The balsamic element in Gentleman EDP is way too strong. The resinous smell overpowers any other facets that this scent offers.

Definitely not my cup of tea, but if I had to wear it, it’s gotta be for formal occasions or fancy dates. Very long lasting with good projection.

I just think it’s not as wearable as fragrance reviewers made it out to be. Gentleman EDT Intense is a way better fragrance overall.
