This is, to me, is better than MFK oud silky mood.
Both are obviously splendid and alike. But there’s something so obviously elegant with MFK’s OSM. Too elegant, exceedingly smooth, so obviously beautiful.

Jo Malone’s velvet rose and oud has a bit of an edge. The chocolate note makes it a bit darker, more somber, a bit more mysterious and earnest.

Ljena777

This surprised me. I don’t enjoy oud scents, usually getting a headache, however this one has a very little oud. It’s hidden behind the sweetness and rose. I actually really like this scent. I have a sample, but not sure if I go for a full bottle. I have a gucci guilty absolute and to me having 2 sweet rose scents is a bit pointless.

Dollycat

It's ok nothing to scream about. On my skin it disappears quickly but that's the case with more perfumes of Jo Malone. It's more the strength of a body mist completely in line with what the people want in a perfume nowadays. It's quite masculine also and not that unique at least that is my experience. So i have put my bottle on sale because i'm bored with it already. I like my perfumes loud and screaming the bower bomb of the 80 90ties. That's perfume for me not the weak juice they sell now with a very high price tag.

Katelynl88

Ya , I don’t like this at all . Smells exactly like roses and oud a sweet sticky resinous incense and then like cat pee . Definitely not for me . I much prefer the myrth and tonka by jm

komail

This is a traditional synthetic funky rose oud repackaged in a Jo Malone bottle. You can literally buy the exact same thing from a local brand in the GCC countries for a fraction of the price. It’s headache inducing and vomit inducing. I had to wash my hand with soap to get this off my hand.

geovanasgarcia

Isso aqui cheira a mágica, cheira a feminilidade. É fora do normal como o pralinê e a rosa atuam nesse perfume. É lindo, e é a prova de que o simples pode ser muito bem trabalhado.

tamovicha

If you've never smelled this and are in doubt - YES this is another iteration of the Oud Satin Mood scent profile. Comparing this, Oud Sapphire (which is another variation of OSM) and Kurkdjian's OSM - I think this is the most polished version and the one most suitable for a cold, dry climate. Both OSM and Oud Sapphire seem like they need a lot of humidity, which this doesn't.
The missing link between OSM and Atomic Rose.

Løpasdfkdf

Its kind of elegant and you have to like sweet red roses swimming in oud with a hint og spice.

This kind of perfume is more for winter and fall. Its kind of heavy and sexy at the same time.

Yamba1

Can anyone confirm if this smells like BBW Dark Velvet Oud? Looking for a niche version of BBW which I adore

see2free

I bought this for my mothers birthday and I just can't stop smelling it, its so evocative yet serene, almost wish I had bought it for myself hhh, its elegance in a bottle.

Leahra

This is a gorgeous and quite opulent scent. I absolutely love it. Its very strong at first but calms down quickly. As it dries down it becomes sweeter, but in a unisex way. Both myself and my son wear this - he sometimes combines in with his more masculine scents and I sometimes combine it with more feminine scents. My favourite is to blend it with JM rose blush.

It smells more like a sweet amber than full on oud to me, but I'm an amber lover so it suits me perfectly. Once dried down completely, it has a hint of soft leather. Very similar on my skin to Must de Cartier. As with all JM scents, the trick is to spray on the skin straight after moisturising (or using the unscented lip balm hack) and then spraying a little onto clothing, then the longevity is far improved.

glitterary

Dark, sexy and classic. Florals generally don’t agree with me, but this rose does; the oud grounds and sweetens it so it isn’t cloying, but the rose scent is thick and undeniable. It doesn’t smell especially complex to me, but it really delivers on both the notes in its name.

I wore this to a 1920s-themed party and it felt just right—seductive in an old-fashioned sort of way, the way you might imagine a femme fatale in a noir movie to smell. Definitely an evening fragrance, for me, but it lasted all night and I occasionally found myself sniffing the air and wondering who smelled so good before realising it was me.

luxsfantasy

I have smelled hundreds of perfumes but I've never been as impressed with a fragrance as I had with this one upon first smell. I walked into the Jo Malone store not looking for anything in particular, and I smelled many of their fragrances without any appeal to any perfume, until the sales assistant pulled out this one. It was love upon first smell, that I had to audibly say "Waw". This is a stunning combination of rose and oud, beautifully combined to create a warm rose perfume. I've always been wary of rose perfumes as some may make you smell like a grandma, but the rose inside this perfume is sultry and sexy. I can't help feeling like I'm a successful elegant woman wearing an expensive fur coat. It literally makes you feel as if you're wearing multiple layers of clothing as it's so warm (I believe it actually keeps me warm in the winter). This is a 100% winter fragrance, the oud only appears as an undertone and appears dominant in the dry down. The longevity of this perfume is insane and the sillage is impressive. Don't buy this perfume blindly unless you like oud fragrances.

danarst

This is delicious, the perfect combination of spices, roses and sweetness.
It smells a bit like the Armenian church. Must be the oud and spices. I can’t walk around my family smelling like church, but I’d love to smell this on others.

If you were to imagine the average Jo Malone scent as a light willowy blonde who takes shy little steps, this one would be a voluptuous brunette who sashays.

ghoul333

this is like the cleaner, uptown-y cousin that marlou podrextase's mother always compares her to. "why do you dress like a skank? why can't you look more like your cousin jo? you know she's getting married in the fall, and she's got that fancy job at the art gallery--"

Heliodora

Probably the only oud fragrance I really enjoy. I recall somebody describing this as an oud fragrance for the oud haters, and that feels very accurate; the oud here is never too much, it's very smooth and never overpowering. Roses in the opening, then it's left with this velvety smooth, bold oud scent. Very unisex. This is also the longest lasting Jo Malone fragrance I ever tried, and projects the most. Glad I could try a sample.

missparfums77

every time I've tried to wear this perfume, I can't help but feel like a giant candle, and a guaranteed headache follows! However, I am a fan of several oud perfumes but this one is extremely synthetic and for me it is the least JM of all the Jo Malone perfumes

TheElf

I love this decadence. It’s smokey, woody, rich and rounded.
It’s a regular go-to of mine. Despite the naysayers below ⬇️

perlindvall

Damask rose for some reason feels very special to me. Such an original masterpiece this is. Incomparable. One of the best perfumes ever. I really thank those who create things like this. I'm gonna wear this even if it leans female, but I actually think it leans male on males, and again, perfumes will be slightly different on everyone.

SOTD Jo Malone Velvet Rose and Oud - 3/5
Ok scent and not comparable to any other perfume in my collection. Described on the packaging of floral: textural, magnetic, decadent.

Smells rosey upon first spray. It is a sweet almost rose jam scent but in an inedible way. The rose is very realistic smelling to me. Deep red rose bouquet in a bottle. Lasts longer on clothes. Settles into a powdery delightful rose. Darker sister to Initio Atomic Rose.

Spouse didn’t have a strong opinion about this one.

Reviewed is based on a self purchased 1.5mL spray sample from a Jo Malone Cologne Intense Discovery Collection sampler. Wore at home.

Velvet Rose & Oud is what it says on the tin, as is typically the case with Jo Malone scents. It is an unchallenging example of a rose-oud scent, with a soft, synthetic woody-amber accord standing in for the oud. It is nicely-rendered, with no animalic skankiness that is associated with true oud. The rose is aptly-described, as smooth and dark as velvet.

VR&O opens with the baby wipe accord that several reviewers below have mentioned, but it quickly gives way to the bold rose note, the core of this scent. It is deep red and jammy, rich and dark - a beautiful example of rose in perfume. It is followed by the "oud" - dry, woody and with an amber nuance. While it is synthetic, with that musky grey cloud I associate with some amber-esque chemicals, it marries nicely with the beautiful rose note. I get a hint of clove, complementing the rose to perfection with its warm spiciness.

It remains a pretty linear rose-amber scent, with some sweetness coming to the fore during the drydown phase, likely due to the praline note. It is not overtly chocolatey, but the smooth, balsamic sweetness alongside the woody-amber accord feels praline-like, helped by the velvety texture of the rose. It fades to a sweetly musky skin scent with some rose remaining alongside the synthetic amber accord. Sillage and longevity are moderate. It is a cold-weather day-to-evening scent.

A unisex rose scent in the manner of Middle Eastern-style perfumery, VR&O is a lovely example of a rose-oud scent that is palatable and unchallenging for Western tastes. It is slightly too simple and synthetic to be my go-to rose-oud, but is lovely nonetheless. 4/5.

Yolis

I am not a fan of oud (so far in my fragrance journey after having worn bright juicy rose fragrances my whole life and now loving dirty smoky roses) and hated Oud Satin Mood because it smelled like baby wipes to me. But the hype is real on this one, this is definitely a beginners oud. Initial spray is that slight baby wipe but with a warm earthy rose. In a couple minutes thankfully the baby wipe scent was gone and i could finally differentiate the oud. It is definitely a soft dry woody scent and although I wouldn't describe it as animallic, there was a depth that I couldn't quite describe as I'd never smelled it before. I liked it though, it's definitely NOT off putting if your scared of oud.

Half an hour in and I was left with a deep delicious sophisticated women's dark rose with some praline and oud as support. This scent is not bright, nor smoky, nor too syrupy sweet from the praline. It is very well balanced and beautiful. 6+ hours. Might be a little mature for me (early 20s) but I can imagine myself reaching for this when I want to feel GROWN or like I have my shit together. This is a woman who knows what she wants and doesn't command attention or respect. By her very nature she just receives it.

DHakky

This is real quality in a bottle ...the mix of the notes is great i was not an oud arabian fragrance lover... i even hate to smell that in your face oud type of perfumes .. but this one ! It's very unique. the scent screams elegance ..the combination is top quality a perfect rose oud combination in my opinion if you want to smell like a royal arabian princess

hommeLhomme

This smells 95% similar to Paris Corner's Ministry of Oud Oud Satin.

iluvzest

It's one of my personal favorite Oud+Rose combos. Very luxurious feeling with this. not too much jammy-sweet type rose. It's a true woody blended rose for me. bit of sweetness within it. Decent niche type of JML. and projection and longevity are high because of this is an intense line of the JML family. love it. My type of Rose+Oud Scent.

safiya_m

This is my signature scent! I love it so much. This perfume has amazing longevity, a strong but not overpowering oud, and a balanced, feminine sweetness. I always get complimented on it.

NB99

When I first smelled this, I didn’t love it. But at the time I was used to smelling and wearing airy fragrances like gypsy water, and BR 540.
I pulled it out every once in a while to reassess and liked it more and more to the point of obsession.
This fragrance makes me emotional it’s so good. It’s extremely special.

perlindvall

Shaghaf Oud Aswad is a copy of this. Very unique scent.

amudrechenko

The rose is simply gorgeous. It's rich, realistic, dark, peppery and woody. The combination of rose and oud is one of the most notable, recognizable and iconic combos in the fragrance world. This was done just perfect. The rose opens up in the first seconds as a beautiful wet and realistic flower, and the oud accord adds some earthiness and elegance to it. The oud here is not "infected" like the Diptyque's oud, but is rather soft, woody and dry. It's blended very well. The base is some-what a sweet note (listed as praline) that I only detect softly at the end. It's not a sweet or vanilla-like perfume, instead it's mature, classic and a statement piece.

mangooo

Really pleasantly surprised by this one! The opening is a burst of a fruity & jammy rose. The oud is there but it's very tame and is just there to balance out the rose to make it darker, mysteries, and mature. It reminds me of Portrait of a Lady but waaaaay more wearable. POAL was too smoky and dusty, this one is the younger sister. It's sweet, rosy, with just enough woodiness. Dry down the sweetness is gone and it's mostly our + rose. I quite like it, but the dry down isn't really for me. I think it'll be hard for me to find occasions to wear this since it's a darker scent.

GalvatronType_R

Excellent rose scent but not as good as Armani Prive Rose D’Arabie. But this is less than half the price.

The Armani scent is more pure rose so it is more unisex while the oud in this one makes it a tad more masculine. Like most Jo Malone scents, limited projection and longevity are issues as is the high price. Thankfully I went on eBay and got a 3.4 oz. bottle for less than $100 (I never pay full price for scents).

FirstSense

I tested this JM at my favourite warehouse and took home the tester strip. It smells amazing and rich. The blend is absolutely flawless. The tartness doesn't feel cheap or sticky but indeed very velvety. I have a bottle of Guerlain Santal Royal, that reminds me of this elegant perfume because of the rose and oud with sandalwood. That one is a synthetic and almost intrusive beast. Velvet Rose & Oud is far more elegant and pleasant. Absolutely a wanna have for the near future.

dee_perfume_gal

This fragrance is truly captivating, with a beguiling blend of oud and floral notes that is both alluring and mysterious. As someone who is relatively new to the world of niche fragrances, I must confess that I was initially wary of the potential heaviness of Middle Eastern-inspired oud fragrances. However, this particular scent has surpassed all of my expectations with its subtle, nuanced approach to oud, which is artfully complemented by a gorgeous rose and a touch of spicy base notes. The overall effect is one of sultry sophistication, and I am confident that this fragrance will appeal to a wide range of discerning scent enthusiasts.

HiddenDeep

A night-time ritual in a hidden temple, this fragrance captures the scent of rare resins, precious woods, and dark chocolate, with notes of myrrh, oud, and a hint of patchouli. The warm spiciness of Tasmanian pepperberry and the sharp tang of aleppo pepper add depth and complexity to the fragrance, while the earthy depth of agarwood and the subtle aroma of mastic create a sense of mystery and intrigue

raiza1990

This is nice. Starts sweet and then turns into a smokey scent. It’s very woody, the rose is not so prominent here. I would have liked a stronger floral note, to make it more feminine, but the scent is good. It’s signature worthy, just don’t blind buy it.

asiu

When it comes to rose-scented fragrances, Velvet Rose & Oud from Jo Malone London reigns supreme. Its enchanting aroma is nothing short of breathtaking, and many consider it to be the best rose fragrance they have ever experienced. This scent is far from trivial, as it captures the very essence of the flower's beauty, evoking feelings of romance, elegance, and sophistication. The combination of sweet rose and earthy oud creates a harmonious balance that is simply beautiful. With its long-lasting fragrance and undeniable allure, Velvet Rose & Oud is the perfect scent for those who want to make a statement and leave a lasting impression.

lynnphi

After having gotten my nose on MFK Oud Satin Mood, I encountered a Gen Z co-worker one day who smelled faintly similar and had to ask her what she was wearing. It was JM and it was just lovely on her. On me, however, the rose dominates. I love rose, but have plenty of rose fragrances so will pass on this one.

stephanienwc

The oud makes this very intoxicating to me... It's a beautiful sweet dark red rose with a bit of spice. Well blended and just gorgeous.

ca$hm3re

I didn’t get any oud really, all rose. I agree with the comment below that this is more of a traditional rose, but one I still find very wearable as a younger person. It smells just like a luxurious, ever so slightly deep pink rose. I don’t get sweetness. Very nice but not what I was expecting. Boyfriend was obsessed with this one though which is not a regular occurrence and not what I expected so this might be an option if you want to attract others.

atv315

Not my style but this is very nice. It’s a more traditional rose fragrance which is where it’s kind of a miss for me (it has a touch of sweetness which is nice but I do prefer musky or jammier rose scents). That said, I can appreciate that this is nicely done. I’m not big on oud in large doses but the notes here are very well-balanced. This might lean ever so slightly more mature but I could picture some younger people liking this too. Not the most unique fragrance but it’s pleasant, and I think it’s very wearable in all seasons and settings.

correspondencepersonal

This week, a girl was wearing this perfume and I caught a trace of this as she was walking down the hallway. This is a beautiful rose oud perfume which is extremely close to the Avon perfume named Velvet. This is slightly sweeter than the La Perla perfume, Just Give Me Roses, that I just reviewed... both are very close, but you would have to try them both to see which perfume works best with your chemistry. Just Give Me Roses is more of a deeper stew of roses and wears slightly more mature and a bit heavier. Velvet Rose & Oud is sweeter and slightly higher pitched. I would try these both to see which perfume works best with your chemistry. Both are very good!

Drisha

Rose and Oud. Nothing else, nothing more. Simple and minimalist. Pretty good silage and longevity. Well done Jo Malone.

fresh sweet tart botanical rose and oud. cant go wrong. candy like

A52, (May 2022 batch)

Sorry for my below first impression.
This is Noir de Noir has no connection whatsoever.
But this one are stand out by it own.

Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud is easier scent to wear in realm of Rose & Oud combination.
As it rely heavily on sweet latonic/chocolate accord base.

It is very sweet and this is Rose dominant than Oud.
Oud in this work like backbone for the scent for deeper sensational.

Opening is very fruity, I smell lychee then reveal Rose.
Rose here, is fairy juicy lust rose.

What make this unique is Milky/Latonic/Chocolate base.
And It is very sweet and tasty.

However, this is work in Jo Malone manner, which is Thin and Airy.
and No, this doesn't have Arabian style oud.

This is layer well with TomFord OudWood resulting in Latonic, powdery Rose Oud
For those who interest in purchase, blind.

If you familiar with Rose & Oud. Go ahead, this is very easy to use.
(but bare in mind, this is very sweet / latonic undertone)

First Impression

After my instant love with TF Noir de Noir.

i really like that rose part along mild oud dept with Chocolate accord without Savory Truffle / patchouli
- this is it.

This is nice for daily wear.
I find oud a bit show up than Noir de Noir but it’s totally okay. I feel like I also get extremely lite patchouli as well.

Overall, it’s tone down noir de noir of rose part. Major love for me.

ch03np

So buttery and smooth. It of course smells like roses and oud, but the combination is just so delectable and cozy. Sometimes leans towards gourmand, sometimes towards floral. I think the sillage and performance is actually really quite nice, which is certainly a little surprising for me and my perception of Jo Malone fragrances being typically very transient—one spray of this cuts through the air like a knife! This is something I’m very happy to have.

Aditya chatterjee

What a beautiful blend of oud and rose, if you love the smell of dark velvet roses then pick it up. Performance is top notch and smoothness like butter what can we ask more.
For the price its justify the fragrance because its not smell synthetic to me its a creamy velvety rose and agarwood blended with a hint of clove to it.
Its lean more towards feminine because rose is dominant till end but because of oud a man can wear it too. 🖤❤

zohaf17

If you guys have ever smelled gulab jamun, that's exactly what this smells like :) beautiful frag that reminds me of home <3

erika.isme.98

I like this. I could immediately tell it was stripped back and simple. A perfect introduction to the rose&oud genre.

Rozalina

This smells elegant but the rose was too realistic, like splashing rose water on my skin. The oud was strong at first but quieted down as the rose came forward.

Dusthound

Im sorry, but I truly HATE this on me. I was very disappointed since I love some of Jo Malones other scents and I am looking for a rose fragrance. I opened the bottle and immediately disliked the heaviness. However, knowing alot of perfumes don't shine in a bottle I put it on one wrist. Instantaneously knew it was a mistake. The first and most overpowering note for me is the sweet praline. Followed by a waxy faux rose. Then an incense like vibe. I was happy I was wise enough to put it on one wrist or I would have had to wash it off. Even my husband (who can't always smell perfumes) said it smelled nasty and very fake. I always try out a perfume first by wearing it to sleep- thankfully it was almost livable 3 hours later. Still not pleasant, but livable.

Im sure some peoples chemistry works well with it- but on me its a dumpster fire. I wouldn't want it as a room scent either though. Too sweet and cloying. Still looking for my ideal rose scent

panyadoll

I adore this fragrance. It is one of my all time favorites. Interestingly, I am usually not a big fan of ouds. This, however, has just the right balance of oud and jammy rose. Like eating a Turkish delight in a mosque- the Turkish delight is closest to the nose but you can smell men in oud cologne walking by in the distance. Many ouds remind me too much of older men at the mosque (looking at you, Raghba) but this is somehow quite feminine and wearable. Performance is excellent. The rose in this reminds me of the rose jam fragrance by Lush. This is also like a more feminine version of Lattafa Sheikh Al Shuyukh Luxe.

Laurus

Reminds me a lot of Yves Rocher Rose Oud I used to have. It was cheaper and I liked it more as I felt it was more feminine smelling. But I prefer Dior Rose Ispahan most. I find this Jo Malone fragrance unisex but maybe leaning slight more masculine.

FigWithMusk

approiate sweetness rose with oud. Nice combination

rezzmail

Rose and Oud together isn't revolutionary, nor is it something I haven't sampled over a variety of different formulations. But it's in Velvet Rose and Oud that I find something plush and syrupy sweet. The Oud adds something sensual and mature while the praline gives the two main accords something to lie back on a linger in, like it's been lounging all day in a day bed with silk sheets. Velvet Rose is alluring and I am always getting compliments whenever I wear it.

Dodiefy

When I tried this I loved it immediately. Its a sweet jammy rose with depth.

People say that it's a very good beginner oud and I'd agree. It's not animalic in any way shape or form. It was my signature scent last winter and I felt absolutely fine wearing around my young baby as its not overpowering.

I've had lots of samples from Jo Malone and this is by far my favourite along with myrrh and tonka and performs really well with good longevity. It's a little heavy for summer though which is why my search for an all rounder continues.

aviegravy

bubble bath-y, jammy, soft rose.

fishandbear

If your family was religious, traditionally Asian, or both, you'll know this scent. This is the scent of a temple. This is the scent of an altar. Personally I can never wear this because smelling this brings back so many memories of burning incenses, visiting funerals, and saying prayers and wishes. My bottle is literally sitting on an altar.

Coffeeandscents

A beautiful realistic red rose, dipped in praline sweetness with a hint of smoky oud and spices. Not overpowering, but perfect for everyday wear.
I’m editing to add that the sweetness can be a little heavy and cloying for summer. This is a cold weather fragrance. Great lasting power for a Jo malone scent.

Fragaddict123

The mainstream combination of oud and rose
Oud is the synthetic one nothing resembling the real deal
It smelled a bit feminine rose is definitely more dominant here
The projection in the first half and hour is incredible
Nothing offensive just a nice rose and a bit of oud personally for what the brand is asking I don’t think it’s worth a full bottle a small bottle for some occasions will suffice

AnnaEMHG

Pretty, pleasing, elegant and uncomplicated. A charming and comforting fragrance.

5xSecrets!

This is wonderful!

It is also a watered down, less complex, less performing and less intoxicating little brother to Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian. Oud Satin Mood may be a bit pricier, but it's impossible not to recommend one over the other taking into account how well OSM performs. Velvet Rose & Oud s is a beautiful fragrance, but the competition has it beat!

subtleagent

Very safe beginner oud. I really enjoy it, it smells expensive. It's a pity it doesn't last longer though. This is a softer version of Armani's Rose of Arabia.

AnnaEMHG

I just keep sniffing my wrist and thinking "Gosh, that is lovely."

t3nlikescookies

Your typical rose and oud combo. But, the oud in this is very tame, soft and inoffensive. In fact it's barely noticeable. The rose feels very sweet and is supported by additional sweet notes giving the fragrance almost a candied floral vibe. For me leans a bit feminine but it's still totally wearable for a man too. Performance is rather soft and nothing to rave about. I like Oud & Rose from Jo Malone but not enough to warrant purchasing a full bottle. Oud Satin Mood or Exquisite Embroidery are overall better choices in my opinion. If you want a bit more intensive oud/rose scent go for Dior's Oud Ispahan.

AnnaEMHG

Comparing Vengeance Extreme to Velvet Rose & Oud: I have had Vengeance Extreme (Patchouli & rose) for a year now and it really is an excellent fragrance in terms of longevity. Fairly linear but as it's delicious, I see no harm in that. Yesterday I bought Jo Malone's Velvet Rose & Oud. Comparing them side by side, one on each wrist, VE lasted hours longer (8hrs plus to the VRO lasting around 4hrs) the main difference was in the dry down. VE has a rougher, skankier side (which is awesome) whereas VRO is far classier and more elegant. Initially they were quite similar but I am glad I have both as they show very different characters in the dry down.

silthrill

Unrefined but beautiful. I don't always want perfectly blended perfumes - sometimes I want to be able to pick out what I'm smelling. You can pick out the rose and oud in this one respectively. Very sexy, I love it.

Jicky1982

Sorry this fragrance repulses me lol.

It smells like rose but mixed with astringent, old fashioned perfume.

And the worst part of all is the fecal/body odor undertone.

I am new to oud so I presume that is what smelling that I don’t like? Many ppl say this fragrance is light on the oud - well if that is the case then oud is not for me. Because there is a strong offensive barnyard note in this perfume. And since the perfume is called Rose Oud (and I don’t have a problem with rose) I presume it is the oud.

Hard pass.

safaincy

A safe rose & oud scent hence why it's my daily wear! It's deep, velvety, creamy with a polite welcome. A great option to anyone who wants to try out oud. Stays almost all day on my skin but sillage resides by time still (half-day through and I will usually reapply).

Controlledbyscent31

On first spray this reminds me of rose D'arabie and oud satin mood but the difference is I can't wear rose D'arabie as I get too much citronella opening so I don't like it on me and I prefer sweeter scents, it smells like a super faint version of oud satin mood by mfk with hardly any sweetness I prefer this to rose D'arabie but to me this is not anywhere near good as the mfk blend nor sweetness, projection and sillage this is a very gentle take on rose and oud and just a bit meh.
I won't buy this as I have mfk OSM edp & extrait in my collection, which are just worth the price tag in my opinion vs this the price tag is just way overpriced for this scent.
But I would buy a candle of it as it's more fitting for a candle for me personally.

Sappyastheygo

Edit: Okay, hold up. Something told me to spray on the back of my neck (😁) & some of it got on my beanie. Now I pick up the subtle jammy rose tht swafts over the the praline-oud. This made it a heart eyes 😻 from me! & also I feel like I can appreciate oud now!

Previously (on skin):
It ends up smelling like Peony & Blush Suede towards the dry down (without the “apple & cherry?” question-feeling). On me, I didn’t get the “jammy rose” that many ppl mentioned before me. The rose is more of the very floral kind almost like the one in Agua Florida (might be due to the cloves-this might also give it a carnation twist like in P&BS) & not very fresh at all but also not too powdery/mineral-y. I noticed that when I misted farther away, more of the “velvet”/creamier scent revealed & the rose is more like a quiet accent that gives the scent its reddish undertone. I personally was hoping for more of the clove to come out, but I still enjoy this scent. It does have a powerful projection, so I will be misting less. Kx

Afraid to say this gives me a headache… I find it incredibly cloying in an old lady kind of way. The rose in it is beautiful but I feel this is a bit of a musky mess.. I do like it on other people though!

Alicjade

A beautiful rose, lasts hours on my skin

Ashleighgreen

I believe oud should create a bit or drama about you. This combination is very safe and sad to say a bit dull. It’s pleasant but not dramatic.

Softpeacelily

Basically rose with a deep oud base. To me it smells like lush rose jam mixed with an oud cologne. But it’s so good! Not the best performing for me in terms of projecting and lasting through the day, but I can always smell when other people are wearing it. Also lovely for cooler weather.

Rosemary14

After a few days of wearing this it reminds me of Oud Satin Mood in the dry down. But it did take a while to get to the similarities. This fragrance is more Rose dominant and far less powerful in the Oud. It also doesn’t have the silky feeling that OSM has or the powdery, Ozonic violets. But when this fragrance dries completely the oud is the same Oud smell in OSM. It’s very pretty and romantic. It’s sophisticated romantic red roses and dark Oud with a pinch of sweetness.

mistergeorgeyan

What I love about this Rose scent is, its woody, smoky which gives the scent a dark touch and makes it very sexy mysterious way. Another reason i love about this scent is, it s not too floral. And if you want it to be a bit more naughty and sensual, just pair with the Bronze and leather..... Imagine yourself wearing nothing but a leather outfit and you have rose petals falling on you. Thats how i picture myself when i put these 2 scents together and its very seductive =)

Totally yummy, cozy -- I love this type of OUD.
The roses paired with this OUD takes perfume to a whole new level - it is SCRUMPTIOUS!
This is a deeper fragrance with notes that would be better in a colder climate and would wear well in fall, winter, early spring - and on cool evenings in summer.

(This is in the same type of family as Avon's Velvet - which is a more synthetic version of this perfume.
I can't begin to tell you the great compliments I've received on that one).

This is definitely a perfume to explore further. I would need to compare and contrast Avon's Velvet directly beside to know how this compares. I've worn Avon's Velvet for about 4 years since it first came on the market. I definitely love this type of perfume on cooler days, it is perfect for the transition into fall and winter.

yenn0

I love fragrances and at some point, I tried very hard to find something that I would like from Jo Malone. I ended up with this but realised this is absolutely too heavy to wear during the day. The scent also lingers on for days if you accidentally spray away from the skin. It made me realized I absolutely dislike oud. It is also a scent that would be more suitable for mature ladies.

LaContessina

This is all about a dark, deep red rose crushed in your fingers.
It has the greenish side of geraniol peeking but this rose is really deep and round. It evokes the color burgundy red.
The oud is there but manages to stay behind the rose and never steals the scene. Gives depth to this fragrance but doesn't transform it into an oud one.
I was imagining to get a classical rose-oud combo in the Montale/Mancera/Lattafa middleastern way but this is not.
This is a rose, starting to wilting.
There is a sweetness to it, you get hints of praline. There is a stage where you get reminded of Oud Bouquet but it's just seconds. This perfume is not Oud Bouquet, not Rose d'Arabie.
It's a mature burgundy rose mastefully done by Fabrice Pellegrin.
Stunning longevity, for a Jo Malone.
Can be worn everywhere as it sits close to skin and will not overpower anyone.
A must have for rose lovers.

cocolily1

This was gifted to me at my 25th birthday by a friend and I was happy to have it! It's not my favourite scent merely because `I feel like it is mild and fades away easily. It doesn't;t seem so special to me, nor is it sweet enough for my taste. That being said, it's definitely fresh and I like to put this on when I am running errands. I still have lots left, so a little goes a long way

jules097

I typically hate rose, for me it’s just been done to death, but I really like it here. It reminds me of dark rose petals, like a burnt rose. Perfect evening scent perfect fall scent, lasts all day I find. Got it on a whim, don’t regret it but wouldn’t purchase again, as I get tired of the rose easily.

Anitanita.

The best smelling Rose and oud fragrance in my opinion.Rose is just beautiful and very soft with added dry oud scent.I don't know if oud here is not synthetic .
It is huge compliment getter to the point people will come up to you to ask what are you wearing.Very safe blind buy in my opinion.
Lasting power is good but not great(about 6/7hours).
Bottle and sprayer looks very cheap, sadly.

comradefraghead

I’m getting MFK Oud Satin Moud with less baby powder and more jammy rose. It’s perfect. If you want to try a rosy oud but you’re not sure where to start, I feel like this fragrance is a safe bet. This is much lighter and sweeter to me than Lancôme Oud Bouquet.

hsiangchi.huang

This is a SUPER UBER ULTRA SWEET rose & oud fragrance. Imagine golden syrup dripping down a fine piece of middle eastern oud.

The quality is definitely there, I've smelled something similar from other luxury niche houses (e.g. Lancome oud bouquet, Armani rose d'arabie etc.). And honestly, I think this JM one is even better than the two before-mentioned. Oud bouquet and rose d'arabie are wayyyyy too potent and prone to cause headaches. The JM one is more well-balanced with the sweet praline note, which rounds off the sharp edges that oud may have.

Bottomline... I did not expect Jo Malone can make something like this... very impressed!

ckorp8

I have this, JML Rose & White Musk, Armani Rose D’Arabie, MFK Oud Satin Mood, and frankly I can barely tell them apart. This is a lot milder and sweeter than those except for MFK OSM perhaps because of the wonderful praline note. I love this much better. The Rose D’Arabie is nice for the glittery things added to the perfume otherwise it’s basically the same with R&WM where the oud is stronger, more animalistic. MFK OSM is smoother and easier going with the oud and a bit sweeter. But it all come down to more or less the same scent. Take your pick and choose one or the other and don’t blind buy them all like me… lol.. Learn to use Frangratica. It might not be able to tell you everything but it surely does help make a more educated decision during this Covid-19 period. I’m just too strong willed and want to decide it on my own.
This perfume is okay in term of silage. The longevity is more than 9hrs. To me its unisex because of the significant oud presence. Its useful for layering with other JML perfumes if you want to add some rose and oud to it. JML perfumes are usually weak on its own. Layering does help make it more interesting and can improve the silage.

Pilikins

I have many iterations of rose oud perfumes, but what distinguishes this one for me is the smokiness which is very similar to Van Kleef and Arpels Oud Blanc, only with the deep and sweet rose. I have been searching so long for a smoky rose perfume. Carolina Herrera Burning Rose is quite good, but Velvet Rose Oud is by far superior in terms of a smoky Rose. The smoke comes from the type of oud used I think, which is dry and clean. It is very different to the animalic oud used in Armani Royal Oud, or the warm, enveloping oud in MFK Oud Satin Mood which is sweeter. However, if you are craving sweet roses surrounded by warm, smoky and slightly austere oud, then this could be perfect for you. I think this perfume is perfectly unisex, ok for casual or evening, cooler weather. Sillage moderate, longevity 8+ hours.

scentists

Overall, it’s a good fragrance. I remember testing it at Nordstrom and I loved it on a paper. Few months after I decided to buy it. Now here’s the interesting part, upon spraying on my wrist I noticed clove right away. I was patiently waiting for the rose and creaminess I remembered from the store, but never got it. Just as a reference, my skin tends to turn things spicy and tangy so that might be a reason since on my partner it’s so creamy sweet, rose and oud combo.
So if anyone is in Toronto, Canada and wants to buy it or swap to something else, please let me know!

Rarabel

I first tried this five years ago in Sydney and fell in love with the most intoxicating, creamy rose scent I have ever smelt. Unfortunately, it was a bit pricy at the time as it was only available in 100mls. That said, the little paper testing strip rested faithfully in my bedside drawer for the next five years, reminding me that one day I should purchase a bottle. Finally that day arrived! I was a bit nervous - hoping that I hadn’t imagined the smell to be better than it was! It was just as amazing though!!

jjgirl13

I just had to come here and post about the combination of VR&O with Swiss Arabian's Casablanca. They bring out the depth of the oud, enhances the rose and Casablanca brings a brightness that elevates the two scents together. I did not like VR&O on its own and was going to get rid of it, but now the two combined may be my new signature scent. I can't stop smelling myself.

RainbowGirl

Oh my gosh...this fragrance is so good, you guys! I feel WOMAN.

Do not be afraid of the oud, Beginner Fragrance Nerds. It is beauty in a bottle. I literally waited 10 seconds after spraying this on a card, to spray this all over me. I am in fragrance bliss.

This is a very rosey scent, with a beautiful velvety oud underneath, to make this a deep and sophisticated fragrance. Leans feminine, as this is a slightly sweet rose bouquet. Makes me so happy.

I cannot wait for the dry down.

Adriana Annette

Rich, port and meltingly smooth blackberry dessert wine, almost smells like Amy Winehouse’s velvety voice bottled. To me it’s a dark berry and red rose perfume ( but not Black Bacarra red, a bit lighter red, more like Ingrid Bergman). The praline note is not strongly present and the oud is lighter and stays in the backround, just like an aftertaste. Thanks to that you could easily wear it during the day, when feeling vampy. The longevity is very Jo Malone’esque - kinda meh, but it’s longlasting on the clothes. The sillage is moderate. If you feel like you want to swim in it, but the price is not awesome, then try ‘Velvet and Oud’ by Jenny Glow. It’s a pretty good dupe. The first 10 minutes there is something that smells a bit chemical and I was nopenopenope, but then it faded away and you pretty much have your Jo Malone for 10 something euros. It also smells very similar to Rose D’arabie edp by Armani Prive, but I feel that the rose in the Armani one is more piercing and not as velvety and balanced (but in the drydown these two are honestly very similar, the Armani one is more longlasting tho, but still pretty light). If you want a beastmode rose-oud, go for Oud Bouquet edp by Lancome, but that one is different, it’s a LOT sweeter and praline dominant.

I really like the opening of this; however, from the mid on imo it falls apart.

SailorV

Easily the freshest, most relaxed of all sweetened rose-oud fragrances I have ever tried.
It's not as opulent and formal as MFK Oud Satin Mood, not as sweet and gourmand as Lancôme Oud Bouquet and softer than either of them. It's perfect if you're new to oud or if you want a rosey oud for every day.
Even though it's much airier than other fragrances from this category, Velvet Rose & Oud is not a light scent per se, especially not for a Jo Malone, and for sure not weak. It just doesn't have a monster sillage.

This is a jammy rose with clean, slightly medicinal wood and a gourmand undertone. I wouldn't call that note praliné, it's not that nutty, maybe more like vanilla with a hint of chocolate. The oud is more noticeable in the drydown, but never overwhelming. I also sense something fruity which lifts the fragrance up, like the rose was blended with lychee, raspberry and lemons.

The overall impression is very smooth and indeed velvety. I think I still prefer the louder, ultra-gourmand Oud Bouquet a little, but if I ever crave a light version of this concept, I will know where to look for it. Beautiful fragrance.

By the way, I do not find this in any way similar to Lush Rose Jam, Atelier Cologne Rose Anonyme or Mancera Roses Vanilla, which all have votes right now or got mentioned in other reviews. Sure, they are all rose scents, but otherwise very different.

theonlyht

The rose is definitely strong here, combined with the oud so beautifully. Not suitable for younger girls as it is very sexy. It almost smells like dried fruits in the beginning and then dries down to more grounding thicker woody notes. Perfect for nights and winter times, could be too much in summer.

Repogirl

I am not a fan of Oud but this fragrance is balanced so well that I really enjoy this one. The rose is beautiful - it's not that cheap powdery overpowering "old" smelling rose but a smooth rose if that makes sense. The oud is blended so well with the rose that it simply compliments the composition. It has a dark, moody vibe to it but also soft and comforting. This one lasts longer than typical JM scents and the composition is sublime.

Lisbethtrinh24

It’s like....urg... I had to take a shower for if to come off :(

Anodea.O

This is in fact, an excellent perfume. Balanced, truly unisex, romantic floral dries down to a subtle woody, candied sweetness. Flashes of smokey cognac ground it into a heavy, (did I say balanced?) bouquet. Hits all the right notes. My favourite by Jo Malone

er1cah

Rose and oud are the two of my most hated notes, usually. However, this one is so well blended and not cloying. It is sweet and complex, in a very sophisticated and memorable way. It does resemble Rose d'Arabie by Armani Privé quite a lot, but I remember leaving that one in the store shelf a few years ago due to the heaviness of it. This is a more pleasing and more gourmand version of that, checks all my boxes!

aaronmilic

Jo Malone... we meet again! Where to begin...

Let's start with the Rose/Oud combo craze. I get it. I get it for the simple fact that on its own, I don't like rose. I don't like the smell of the flower, I don't like rose perfumes. But once you combine it with oud, something magical happens.

There's a ton of oud/rose fragrances out there, just look above at the "this perfume reminds me of" section. So why Jo Malone? Where does Jo Malone excel compared to others.

Well, ironically it's for the reason we usually get angry with Jo Malone. Most oud/rose combos are deadly strong. This one, like nearly every Jo Malone cologne, isn't. This is wearable, it's not overbearing. I wouldn't call this light by any means, this is one of the strongest Jo Malone's I've tried but still, it sits nicely and doesn't fill up the room. It's present but not explosive.

On first spray the rose seems to actually be sparkling. It dries down fairly quick and while the rose stays on top the oud and something else I can't put my finger on linger underneath to balance it out.

I couldn't tell you if it's a quality oud but it's a nice fragrance overall. Don't think I'd try this in warmer weather and I'd likely stick to wearing this in my formal settings. I feel this is a special occasion fragrance and not an everyday at the office sort of thing. When you want to smell good but not the main smell in the room.

If anyone has come across pairings with other Jo Malone fragrances that worked for them, please message me.

ladolcemae

Reminds me a bit of Lush Rose Jam but better, more sophisticated, more womanly, more precise... Unisex, but sweet on the right skin. The rose and oud are barely detectable, as everything is extremely well blended, but the mix is almost oriental. Warm and deep, inhale it slowly and let it move you.

Quixotic Blue

There were so many amazing reviews on this, it was a must try!

On first application, I get a lot of bright berries with the rose, which is a nice realistic and mature rose, not synthetic at all. The berries almost take over at first, but they fade a bit to just a sweet undertone for the rose just when the oud starts to reveal itself. Many rose scents are very powdery, and I was surprised not to have that for this scent, especially with the oud. I have a lot of oud combinations, but this is easily the best balanced pairing that I've ever had the pleasure of smelling. The jammy rose syncs perfectly with the smooth, woody oud, which lends just enough dryness to pull the floral/fruit tones down into a sophisticated, languid, and beautiful range. I don't get praline in this, just the sweet jam, and the cloves listed in the notes don't surface at all for me, even though I love clove.

The sillage is moderate and as for longevity, it fades within 3 hours on me. It's wintertime and I've applied it twice today and it's pretty much a skin scent at hour 4-5. It's now around 6 pm and I can still barely smell the berry and oud on the fabric of my clothing, but not on my skin. The rose isn't there at all right now.

Try this even if you've avoided oud in your scents--it's not overpowering at all. It's a mature, sophisticated scent, definitely leans feminine. A smidge too berry for me at the beginning, but if you enjoy that in a scent, this one might be for you! Overall, the balance between the rose and oud makes it very special. The longevity makes it too pricey for me to buy on a whim, but it's definitely a special occasion, serious date, or snuggling into a blanket with a good book/movie at night scent. Sample before you buy unless you don't blink at the price. But definitely sample--it might become your signature scent!

Bint_Brooks

My absolute favorite from Jo Malone. I read below it smells like Rose Jam from Lush. That is the best description of the fragrance. I was “that customer” who went online and demanded Lush make a Rose Jam perfume. Needless to say they didn’t listen... So I found myself running to buy this fragrance. The blend of the Oud is so hidden I barely detect it. And I know what Oud smells like even the Oud that the Sheikh wear... lol.

ginandrice

Rose is very predominant in Velvet Rose & Oud—sweet and jammy, but also sharp and bright. I don’t much smell the praline as praline, but I think it’s what’s responsible for the sweetly edible aspect of VR&O (and if so, it serves the fragrance well). Meanwhile, the cloves help pull things back the other way, towards a more classic, sharp rose scent. It’s a nice balance between the confectionery and the floral, _if_ you like rose.

Personally, I do like rose, and for about an hour VR&O is gorgeous—elegant, rich, and mouth-watering. Unfortunately, the drop off in performance is steep. By the two-hour mark, the rose has dried right up, and died right down, leaving me with a dry, woody skin scent.

I bought a FB of this, but tbh, I think I was suckered by that beautiful opening, and by my yearning for a bottle of the now impossible to find Flowerbomb Rose Explosion. Given VR&O's performance issues, I’m kind of regretting it.

cooke.84

I like to apply the Jo Malone Peony and Blush Suede lotion on my neck and spray the Velvet Rose and Oud on top of it. I find this gives the scent more longevity and more depth - a hauntingly beautiful combo. I think that Jo Malone fragrances are meant to be paired so that you can warm it up, freshen it up, spice it up, etc. to your liking. When you get only one, it is kind of like getting half a fragrance - so yes it will read a bit linear and flat. I appreciate this ability to be a little creative depending on my mood.

Allers

Nope, doesn't do it for me. Somehow ended up with a full bottle of it, impulse buy!
Rose - tick, oud -tick. Result is somewhat dusty and underwhelming. I get bored with it straight away.

BaySense

I purchased this at a discounter but it seemed to have all the makings of a legitimate Jo Malone bottle. It was wrapped in plastic, there was a black band, and an insert for a free hand/arm massage at any Jo Malone boutique included.

It started out with a sweet, jammy, but sharp Rose scent with decent projection. Sadly, this only lasted for about 20-30 minutes.

After that, it dried down into a smooth rose on a base of modest oud. Skin scent at this point.

And it disappeared entirely in about 2 hours.

I tried spraying more to see if this would help.

No luck.

Will give this a try when I get a chance to sample it store to see if I got a legitimate bottle or not. Who knows...

If this is the legit juice, it's impossible for me to justify at this price point.

xjordanox

I think this is a perfect starting point for anyone who's looking for a rose and oud combo, that isn't strong on the oud.

On me, the rose is the star of the fragrance, the oud and praline are very much in the background, just adding a rich depth. I can only pick up a hint of cloves.

Lancome's Oud Bouquet is one of my favourites, I don't personally find this overly similar to it. It's a lot brighter, not as rich or sweet as Oud Bouquet. So if you found that one a bit too dark or syrupy, Velvet Rose and Oud might be a good option for you to try.

Lynnie77

I love this perfume, however I find that it doesn't last very long for the price. I first bought this perfume about 4 years ago and wore it religiously, however becoming vegan 3 years ago I stopped buying Jo Malone and discovered Eden perfumes who create vegan versions of originals and they are spot on. I am now wearing the Eden version of this perfume and it smells identical, however it is half the price and lasts so much longer. I only thought I would make people aware as it last so much longer than the original, which seems to be an issue.

Never2Late

Well, based on some of these reviews, I just ordered this scent! It was an impulse buy....but it was also on sale. I have been curious about Jo Malone for quite a while, and have toyed with the idea of ordering a sample set. I also wanted to add an oud to my collection. And I have been researching ouds. Based on the reviews here, it is not as striking an oud as some other brands, and maybe that is a good one to start with. Just out of curiosity, any of you who have this scent, have you layered it with another Jo Malone? If so, what, and did you like it?

elledeelee

Hands down my favourite rose & oud combo. An amazing balance of notes - smooth and dark and feminine. Absolutely perfect.

nordhaul

This is so cute 🐱🥰
Smells sooooo good
Keep spraying
Doesn’t last

mauvealert

Love this gourmand rose. I get an expensive raspberry chocolate truffle vibe from this, and it's delicious. I don't find it as overpowering as some people seem to, I get moderate silage and basically all-day longevity but the fragrance itself feels gentle to me, polite enough to wear at an office or church, in my humble opinion.

Farangismua

I dont know why I cant find myself liking oud, I realize everytime I buy oud its not for me, it Doest go with my taste buds and frankly bothers me. Im sure oud lovers will love this scent but no definitely no for me

Sirène Cryptique

This Beauty dries down to a gentle, softly spiced, creamy, candied rose. A Baby Noir de Noir, sans patchouli. As much as I adore Noir de Noir, it can become too heavy at times & I find myself wishing it would calm a bit. Velvet Rose & Oud is lighter, fresher & much easier to wear (not words I’d ever thought I’d care to say in regards to my beloved NDN). If the right man were to wear this, which is to say: My man, I would probably follow him off the edge of a cliff. Not actually, but it is that good. Ethereal vapours emanating from the Pharaoh of my Heart, taking me to another world. Soulmate, in the truest sense. I can't get enough of it, currently. I find it interesting that these two scents immediately conjured an Arab Prince vision/feeling: spiritual & wise, whose nobility comes from his Spirit, not blood lineage; he is not a tyrant or 'player', mired in the lower expressions of man. ...Later learning that these notes are very common in Arabic perfumes.
I welcome thoughts on that.

There are similarities between this & Oud Satin Mood by Maison Francis Kurkdjian, although again, Velvet Rose & Oud is much, much softer with far less oud. Although I like Oud Satin Mood a lot, I could never wear it without starting to feel the eventual overwhelm, as it is just too heavy for me, too much oud perhaps.

Velvet Rose also reminds me of a perfume that I love dearly & can no longer get called Jezebel, from a woman who seems to have vanished completely. I can find neither her business nor her anywhere online. 😿

pacsalia

in the beginning is the rose too much for me but the dry down is magnific <3 i will buy the dupe of this by Jenny Glow at first, cause the price is too high for me :(

bintTapputi

I have tried so many oud/roses at this point that they all sort of blur into each other if they don't really go out of their way to be unique. Jo Malone's oud/rose is not unique but it is well done. The oud is soft but sharp and the rose is the highlight of the fragrance. It has great projection, easy to smell from across a room, which I love. I think the rose here is really nice, it does take a minute to settle down but when it does it's quite smooth and dark, very rich, deep and interesting. Overall this is a very relaxed, beautiful, interesting oud/rose fragrance that is of a very high quality. I love the projection on it and really enjoy it. 7.5/10

jung_yunho26

Younger sister of Malle’s POAL and TF’s NdN.

I experienced all three so I think I can attest as to their supposed short-lived tendencies. They have patchouli and rose as base and here are their differences:

Portrait of a Lady-sustained salvo of clove and raspberry.
Noir de Noir-tuber as replacement for oakmoss with overdose of patchouli.
Velvet Rose & Oud-berry and candy with distinct clove nuances.

A potential all-year round perfume because of its demure temperament. VO&R is the prettiest of the bunch. And of course, what would you expect from perfumes without much fixatives? A docile performance with the top notes ephemeral.

Some say it’s in the same ballpark as Oud Satin Mood but I have yet to try that.

Pretty.

Timaka

Gorgeous scent with disappointing longevity for the price. Velvet rose & Oud is the first rose and oud combination I ever fell in love with.

Has nostalgia to it, but unfortunately doesn’t get worn much as it only lasts a few hours on my skin. Longevity is better on clothes and hair, around 6 hours. Overall a beautiful fragrance, but in hindsight, not worth the money. I’m sure there’s better and longer lasting rose and oud perfumes out there. 7/10.

1guy1dog3cats

There’s a reason Velvet Rose & Oud always gets mentioned in discussions of rose/oud pairings. It’s just that good. The roses here are so dark, bolstered from below with the woodiness of oud. Praline grants some sweetness, leaning the composition more toward mainstream trends. Though, don’t take my use of “mainstream” as a dig against VR&O—this isn’t overly sweet like its rival, Lancôme’s Oud Bouquet; the praline just enhances its charm. To my nose, Jo Malone rarely releases magical elixirs like this. Serious, sensual, and seductive. Perfect for any gender, and due to its relatively quiet volume, appropriate for even warmer temperatures. I don’t often rush to repurchase when a bottle runs low, but this is one I wouldn’t want to live without. MUST-HAVE!

fragranceguru

Lovely fragrance! A quiet, rich, smooth and yummy fragrance. To the previous reviewer, if the EDC is too "cloying", try the Dry Oil instead so you don't get that Denat Alcohol needed to propel the Cologne. The oil is subtly stunning and lasts all day on me. This will definitely become a staple in my wide array of fragrance staples - I can't get enough of it :)

Sh123

I get the rose oud praline. It stings your nose for first 5 minutes of application. Very cloying. its nice. good sillage, poor longevity.

Tamlin

Delicious, realistic rose.

Smells really, really good, in an edible, gourmand way. Rose is front and center, but the praline note makes the rose feel very sweet and super jammy. I totally understand that some people get a raspberry jam vibe from this. The praline makes it sweet, but the rose keeps it fresh. Barely manages to not get cloying.

A confident man can probably pull this off but I feel like the sweet jammy side of it makes it lean more feminine.

A few hours into the drydown, both the rose and praline fade away almost completely and leaves only the oud remaining, which changed the scent quite a bit.

humaira_

For me the smell of this is almost the same with LV les sables rose, the different is just the opening. from jo malone you get the oud first, after that its totally the same with Les sables roses.

I don't really like oud, but i love this perfume! Its elegant

Edit : i read one of the review that this is similar with mfk oud satin mood. Personally , i think this two totally different. With oud satin mood you get the sweet from baccarat for the opening and after that you get a bitter oud (at least for me). I don't find the similarity at all

fyetan

The rose and oud together just smell like an ever so slightly floral SANDALWOOD. Sandalwood opening, sandalwood middle after losing the fresher top about 30 mins in, sandalwood base for hours 1-2. And then gone.

TexasOrangeBlossom

I first discovered this scent in the spring. I loved it instantly, but I didn’t feel it lasted long enough, especially considering the price. It is pretty while it lasts, but only 3-4 hours. Fast forward to sweater weather. Lingers and lingers beautifully! It stays on my skin perfectly in cooler weather. I also notice it longer on my clothes. Maybe it’s just my nose, allergies and what have you. Grateful it wasn’t a waste of money after all! It’s my new favorite fall/winter scent.

lechickpea

Elegant. Sophisticated. Feminine. Mature. Glamorous. I will be reaching for this fragrance next time I'm invited to a red carpet ball, or the Oscars, or perhaps the Met Gala. But until that day comes, I'm enjoying wearing this beautiful lady of a fragrance in my rather mundane day to day life :) I might be crowded into a subway car headed to the grocery store, but at least I can smell like I'm wearing a Dior gown dripping in diamonds!

Really nice longevity too- 4 sprays gets me through my entire work shift.

CaraQ

This is pretty and alluring upon first meeting. I dated this perfume for about 3 months before asking my boyfriend to buy it for my Birthday.

I'm sorry to admit that it's lost me over the past year or so. The smell turns me off now. The rose smells fake and clingy.

andrei85

I'm not a big fan of oud, I know I'm committing blasphemy but still gave this a try because of the roses.
This combination works great for me, roses by themselves smell nice but would have been boring, while oud brings soul to this fragrance. Yes, I love it in this juice.
And then... there are the pralines, for me it's a soft touch that changes everything - in the good way.

From time to time, I'm layering it with Myrrh & Tonka (as they recommend it) just to give it a different twist.

J350

Very sweet and woody! I love it. I get a lot of compliments everytime I wear this. Longevity and sillage is great!

Ttt1

This is a very sweet rose oud. It’s ok at the beginning but then it gets very sweet.
It’s a very simple fragrance. Not very exciting. Does not develop as nicely as I would expect a rose oud to develop. It’s pretty at the beginning... but that’s it. Then it’s pretty sweet.
I personally believe the best rose oud combo is by tiziana terenzi. Check out that one if you actually want a sophisticated and powerful rose oud fragrance.
Montale has better stuff as well, maybe a little more masculine. (I’m a guy)

LoreleiL

It looks like I am an outsider here, or probably Jo Malone is not my fragrance house. I can't see any depth or versatility in any of their colones, they are just so monotonous and bland. The same applies to Velvet Rose @ Oud.I will jump for joy when someone buys it out from me. Nothing else to add.

Sweet praline on top of bright red rose petals. It's sweet so if you dont like sweet rose layer it underneath of Oud Bergamot or on top of Bronze Wood and Leather to accentuate the oud a bit more and smooth out that sweet note.

anna1987

This smells similar to oud bouquet by lancome. I prefer Armanis Rose d‘Arabie, it doesn‘t have that annoying praline note, it has that oud-rose combo without being super sweet, and is more pleasant to my nose.

lvcougar702

A very beautiful soft feminine rose scent. The oud really adds a fullness to this scent. It's totally feminine, not unisex at all. However, as a previous reviewer (fkollmeier) mentioned, the scent is not very strong and longevity isn't that great. I would only buy a full bottle of it at a greatly discounted price. It performs like a body spray.

aqua76239

This is rose, very lightely sweetened, with nice oud background, smells rich and deep. I am not a big fan of florals in general but i like it a lot. However, to my nose it smells a LOT like Rose by Elizabeth and James which i already have so i passed on this one.
I think men can wear it too

cocofluff

Tested at an airport recently. It does indeed smell similar to Oud Satin Mood by MFK. I wish I had bought a small bottle of this instead of the Alexandria Frag dupe. Velvet Rose & Oud smells much less synthetic. love it! I also love OSM. Both are going on my BUY list.

EDIT: just got this in a set and I'm loving it. I tried the body oil and liked it too but the smell is not deep or long lasting in the oil form. -

parnpipit

This one smells very similar to Angel Schlesser's oriental edition II. They share almost the same notes except patchouli which jo malone didn't have.

chairat.luck.pluem

Jo Malone London Velvet Rose & Oud is a Oriental Floral fragrance for women and men. Velvet Rose & Oud was launched in 2012..This smell is good for who loves looking like adult and child cause it's sweet and woody mixed together. I love it so so much!!

Shwets

This was one of my first rose and oud perfumes that i had tried when it first came out. Having re visited it yesterday, either the formula has changed or my nose has got used to the other rose oud fragrances that smell much superior.

The Jo Malone one is very simple smelling modern type but it lacks the depth of the rose and oud combo, as if something is missing to complete the fragrance. But i really like this simplicity.

There are many including Rose D'Arabie, Kilian Rose oud, Dior Oud ispahan etc.

My current favourite after smelling a variety is Bella Bellissima Arabian Rose.

redskyatnight

Among the many oud-rose-praline perfumes permeating the market at the moment, this is my least favorite. It has a wonderful opening with creamy rose and oud, but fails to deliver as far as the pleasantness goes. After less than an hour, whatever hasn't faded is just cloying and bland. Performance is so very lacking that the money would be much better spent on Lancome Oud Bouquet (a larger bottle at that), or even an affordable, genuine Middle-Eastern perfume or one of the 24 oud line (!). All such are typically sweeter than this yet easier to take. It seems JM is just jumping on the sweet-oud bandwagon with a token Arabian in the lineup. It's fine if a perfumer wants to branch out, but don't cheapen the image with a half-done job at an exorbitant price. 3/10

RoseSoul

First impression: I sprayed it on my wrists without reservations ... and from the first moment I remember the rose water I received a few years ago from Turkey. However, this huge bouquet of roses is surrounded by a special and sweet jelly, probably due to the pralines. The rose is present throughout the evolution, and at the first spray the sillage is absolutely delightful! It gets more and more sweet ... so I'll come back with details ... especially because I'm looking forward to find my perfect sweet oud. Right now, I feel that this is a great sweet rose fragrance!

Edit: I can not say that I feel the oud more present even after two or three hours after applying. Also, the rose is not that vibrant anymore, but it feels more velvety and scented ... compared to Oud Bouquet by Lancome, clearly is less sweet, but much more on my taste and it has a better performance on my skin. I love it, although it has already become a skin scent. But a lovely one!!! And it stays like that for hours .... Big Love ❤️

Edit: Top shelf favorite!

tizzy202

Sweet and woody at the same time! For someone who can appreciate oud.
I am a bit cautious with this though since many people might find oud-y perfumes nauseating.
Personally I really like it!

chloeXO

Velvet Rose & Oud is only Jo Malone cologne I love. This is fruity juicy rose with the softest musk, cocoa powder and very delicate oud note, I never smelt anything like this.

Christycaxxx

A beautiful rosey oud scent that is heavy and woody to wear. I found that when paired with other Jo Malone fragrances, especially Oud & Bergamot and Blackberry and Bay, the praline notes come out that makes the fragrance a little sweeter. I have to apply moisturiser prior to spraying the fragrance on to prolonged the scent longer as Jo Malone fragrances tend to fade from my skin. Comes on strong but then fades into a skin scent.

mmcdonald36

Smells similar to an MFK Oud Mood. If you like those, you'll like this one. Great price for what you get!

Ramy salah

Very nice intake of oud/rose combo I think it is the rose which made it stand alone in this category.
It has a high quality of ingredients.
The only bad think is the projection. It is very weak on me !
I am surprised to read comments here regarding the strong projection !!
May be the skin type ? Dunno
But I enjoy it.

Velvet Rose & Oud by Jo Malone
Reviewed from 100ml bottle with atomizer

Summary: A dark, rich dessert served on an ancient but priceless wood platter and surrounded by huge, plush roses.

Velvet Rose & Oud begins with a loud, candyish wave of sweetness that quickly settles darkly into the titular rose and oud pairing. Somehow even with the framing of the dessert notes and the roses, the oud binds the scent together with its dusky seriousness to create an effect that lands just barely on the male side of the unisex line. However, the way the oud presents its darkness and masculinity is in its heaviness rather than its pungency or spice like other male-aimed oud colognes. The continuing theme after the initial wave of sweetness is one of dark, woodsy florality but considerably less confrontational than that same ideal presented in Montale's Black Aoud. VR&O projects its rose-oud axis in a way as assured as Black Aoud but with a sense of restraint at the designer level of polish. While the velvety-feeling rose deservedly takes top billing it's still very much a duo, a chord of doom and longing.

Colors evoked: dark purple, dark brown
Musical accompaniment: Rhye - "Major Minor Love," Osvaldo Fresedo - "Sueño Azul," Opeth - "Prologue"
Food parallels: rose crème brûlée, black forest cake
Timing: seasonally versatile but useful only after dark; the themes presented lose impact in the daytime despite the scent itself being soft and fresh enough to be useful in the workplace or gatherings.

This fragrance is awesome it's a love love from me it's deep and dark and comforting , wear it any time of day or season, wear it to please your own aura, combine it with the dry oil and you will be in the nirvana of rose gardens
I have the JM and the AP RoseD'Arabie both so gorgeous with massive longevity 1 lil spray of JM and still worthy of praise 12 hrs later did not morph into a synthetic nasty beautiful all the way
Please try it and fall in love

assim.hayderi

A dark rose-oud combo where the rose is more dominant than any other note used in here. It does remind me of three other high-quality perfumes, which are Dior Oud Ispahan, Armani Rose d'arabie and Ermenegildo Zegna Indonesian Oud. The oud in here is really tamed and I would say that this is the perfect oud scent for someone who cannot tolerate oud otherwise. But the rose is the main player and it is beautiful.

Scent: 8.5/10
Longevity: 8/10
Projection: 8/10

zhuzhu

I didn't like it at first until I learned how little it takes for its magic - literally one spray to share between two wrists! Any more than that I can't enjoy. At th minimum amount it is sweet and magical!

flyingfish

Sexy scent but too strong. When layered with Blackberry and Bay, it gets tempered and smells beautiful. This combination smells like a stronger version of Carolina Herrera 212 Sexy for women.

LisIrishFleur

Well, I've finally procured my JM,VR&O for just over a week now. Though, it's very lovely. I am a bit disappointed. The Silage is fairly weak. Especially, for an "INTENSE" Parfüme. It's definitely a skin scent. I really wanted this to be a knockout. The longevity is a joke for a $250 bottle of Perfüme. One would think it would last longer than two hours at that price. I have seen many times on Frangantica that this has been a very common complaint about Jo Malone perfumes. The price exceeds the Silage and longevity. I really should have heeded that warning a bit more. These perfumista know what they're talking about. as for the scent itself, ...I barely get any rose or clove, which was the entire basis for the purchase. However, though it wasn't a knock me on my A** gorgeous scent I was hoping for. It really is very, very lovely. Extremely well blended and romantic scent. It's perfect for winter and when I want to snuggle with my hubby. Though it's lovely. When the bottle is gone. I won't be replacing.

LisIrishFleur

I have been on the hunt for quite a few years for a perfect Rose & Clove perfume. So, far everything has been too dry,too harsh, too hot,too green, or yuk..overtly candy sweet and fruity. Or worse yet not enough rose. I have been eyeing JM's VRO. I just ordered a bottle of this Jo Malone Velvet Rose Oud and am waiting for it to arrive. I'll be back for my formal review. Keep our fingers crossed!

Sorry for any english mistakes ^^

There she is. That intoxicated, mysterious, ecstatic, hauntingly beautiful woman who is waiting for a man in the bed, covered with silk sheets and velvet pillows... she wears a vintage satin teddy with high leg cut and her long luminous hair is falling down on her shoulders. Her body odor is mixed with Velvet Rose and Oud, and yes, THIS rose is indeed VELVET and smooth- not powdery, not fresh, not grandma-like. It's dark and covered in delicious pralines. The Oud sits quiet in the back- because Oud knows it's not the time to be loud around a sassy, dangerous woman whose ecstatic body is covered with the scent of the most beautiful flower in the world-the rose.
And a man appears. And he is looking at her. And he smells the pralines, the milky roses, the cloves. It drives him nuts. He wants her, and he wants to smell her body the whole night.

Velvet Rose and Oud, you are the biggest seductive prostitute in the world. I love you.

nordhaul

I have had this and for a long time
have been saving this. It is soooo
Gorgeous. Well so today I decide
to bring out the big gunz n guess
what? It ain’t all that! It is weak,
for one. Finally decided to mix w/
Lime & Basil because I hate L&B.
Then wore L&B alone when I ran
out of the VR&O. It makes it a bit
tolerable, I guess. Not worth big $

mrslevy

I have a small sample of this that I am treasuring until I am able to save up and purchase the full size. Simply put, this is sex in a bottle. The rose note is quite prominent, but not grannyish in the least -- it's soft, evoking the velvety texture of its petals. It begs the skin to be touched. The warmth of the base notes only adds to the allure and sensuality of the fragrance. Longevity is excellent, and sillage is moderate -- noticeable, but not invasive. I would not wear this to the office. The dry down is sweet, but in a gentle way -- a soft, rosey gourmand touch that reads warm rather than sugary, due to the clove and oud notes, which are present in a supporting role. I don't find it overly sweet, but if you're averse to gourmands, you will not like this. For me, it's heavenly, and unlike anything else on the market.

rziotti

Essa fragrância é maravilhosa! Mistura rosa com oud, bem quente , especial para o inverno, atualmente minha favorita de inverno. Eu realmente amo a marca Jo Malone.

This fragrance is wonderful! Mix pink with oud, very warm, special for winter, currently my favorite winter.
I really love the Jo Malone brand.

beatrix75

Ok My Lord this scent its amazingly beautiful and feminine.Creamy roses and beautiful oud ,hint of spicy something I can't identify but it's there absolutely gorgeous

ANNAFRYS

dry down is so pretty! love it !

kristen0129

I am very picky about oud note in perfumes and same I could say about roses. Velvet Rose & Oud is excellent harmony of both, exactly what I need. Close to skin I feel fruity notes, but when I move I get nice dark rose and dry wood combination. Usually I get tired soon of intense perfumes, but this Jo Malone perfume always keeps me interested.

Arlene-Beatrix

It's great oriental scent, I like it very much even if anything spicy is usually not my cup of tea. It's subtle and deep, truly velvety. I can recommend it to every oriental scents' lover.

majcarlstewart

nice close to skin rosy scent. Spray heavy if you want to get noticed

GirlyScientist

This is a lovely warm, woody rose. The oud and rose balance each other well at the start. On me, the rose soon fades. Before it is completely gone it smells like... like I need to go out, buy a lot of leopard print clothing and hit on much younger men. Thankfully, that passes and again becomes classy and warm, but just the oud, praline and very soft cloves. Still, on my skin, this is a pass.

[Edit] If you want something similar, but more refined and elegant, Armani Prive Rose d'Arabie is what you're looking for. Testing that scent has made me change my mind about the rose & oud combination.

chakalitpasshun

This is perhaps one of the best fragrances Jo Malone has introduced because although I like some of the others, the sillage and longevity are lackluster. This smells like Love, and Great Passionate Sex with rose petals everywhere. The oud in this is just amazing. It doesn't dominate the fragrance as much as I thought, it is definitely a nice supporting actor alongside the star of the show: The Rose. I would describe this as something a housewife of a wealthy tycoon would wear with a silk floor length robe and fur lined heels as she sashays up and down the spiral staircase of her victorian style mansion.

miako

I've noticed that I tend to have a lot of problems with Jo Malone fragrances (generally too fresh, plus longevity & chemistry with my skin), but I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee this perfume to no end... I have three bottles of this because I am so scared that one day I will no longer be able to buy it, plus I have the oil, the candle and the creme. So here goes...

It has not even a whisp of brashness, it is classy from start to end- creamy, velvety-sweet, with a majestic rose to center it from being placed fully in the gourmand category. The oud is nothing to be terrified of, it is very tame and just gives it a slightly dark, mysterious, spicy edge which drifts in and out just to make sure that your (or intended other's) attention never leaves.

It is unquestionably gorgeous with an opaque sex undertone.
I think people who have smelled it and liked it will understand that sentence... so for those of you who don't, go smell it at your earliest convenience!!

I will now go drown (happily)in this beautiful juice.

duck2587

This is unique, sexy and great. I get very good longevity and moderate projection with good sillage. It is never too much. This is my noir de noir replacement due to NDN being reformulated to a bad point. I get noticed and women love it. Try this one out along with Myrrh and Tonka. Another seductive scent by Jo Malone. This house is really getting my attention.

Teresa1019

To me rose out is a classic matching.
When I first sniffed it the rose is super velvety and worth paying attention to, the oud is not over powering though, the clove created an interesting space in between the rose and the oud which slightly saddened me.
But over all the fragrance is comparable with by Kilian rose oud, to me the two rose seems identical.

alassouli

To be honest, I donno what's a biggy on Jo Malone perfumes. I mean they suck in a sense that sillage and longevity is next to nothing and they cost arm and leg. I am just wearing this particular one right now as I got a sample from Holt Renfrew . I wanted to buy a bottle just as a blind buy and they didn't have a 50 ml in stock so the lady was insisting me to buy 100 ml imstead. Mind you 50 ml was $ 150 Canadian plus tax and 100 ml is 250 CND plus tax . Like come on. I told the lady I can't afford 250 just kindly give me a sample for now and put me on wait list for 50 ml when it is back in stock. Thank God I could not buy it. smells like spit. Nasty smell of some rotten fruits . I like her English Pear and Freesia which is a big disappointment once again due to no longevity what so ever. 90 bucks for 30 ml were drained down the garbage.

XxRosexX

I think the price point on Jo Malone fragrances is ridiculous for the longevity and sillage you usually get, but this is very much one of the exceptions: Amazing sillage, amazing longevity. The name Velvet Rose Oud is misleading, because out of all the fragrances containing oud that I've tried, this has the least noticeable oud note, and Oud is right there in the name. I normally wouldn't even try a perfume with oud in the name, because I was beginning to think I hated all oud perfumes, but I saw this at Norstrom, and I thought, "Hey, why not?", and gave it a test. I'm glad I did because I LOVE it. For a fragrance with oud in the name the oud isn't even really that noticeable. This just smells so romantic and lovely. It's this sweet, sexy, jammy rose with this spicey, almost incense like backdrop that the oud and clove offer. The dry down is a sugary sweet rose jam. I can't think of a more Valentine appropriate perfume.

eftyxiapascesar

I bought it today!I love roses and the combination with oud was frightening me!But in this perfume oud is very delicate, very gentle, just a hint, just to increase the velvet character of the rose! It's definitely intense compared to the other malone colognes!
I think it's just gorgeous!

M.Golightly

I really do not want to bore this review with the complexities of the fragrance, nor its price. I simply want to share what this fragrance is for me.

Succulent dewy red roses. Yes this is how I define this fragrance. It was the fragrance I put on during a holiday in Cambodia, Singapore and the Philippines. It sealed that holiday perfectly because the rose scent made the humidity of S.E. Asia cool and the oud is elegantly subtle like a lingering incense scent I caught from a temple. I love fragrances because it bottles up memories and this scent always brings me back hot, humid, days, in Angkor Wat.

snoopyQ

This is nothing new.

BUT the oud in this is very managable, I dare say pleasant.

It opens with the oud then the praline sweet rose enters the picture and they linger together for a moment until the rose takes over.

All in all I find this scent to smell very clean and soapy once it is settled into the skin.

I smelt Maison Martin Margiela Promenade in the Gardens and that one does not only smell almost identical BUT has BY FAR better sillage and staying power than Jo Malone.

Sooooo, basically Jo Malone is .......... of your hard earned money! (you fill in the blank)

Englishrose77

I bought a bottle of this and love it. I have most of the Jo Malone collection, and this is really puzzling me. For some reason, it REALLY reminds me of the 1988 vintage "Victoria" perfume by Victoria's Secret. ( How's that for showing my age?). Am I nuts, or are these fragrances similar? Anybody?

Steleale

Tested today at the duty free in the airport. I was scheptical, but I was delighted at the firts sniff. Rose and oud are the main notes and a few hours later I got a tiny touch of gourmand note that makes the oudy note lighter, definetely I don't get any cloves at all.

Update (the day after): I went at the duty free store again and tested VREO on my skin. Rose is the most prominent note, I don't get praline note amymore, but cloves. I more enjoyed the smell I got from the mouillette than the one my skin chemistry gives so I won't buy a fb, but give this frag a try because all in all is good.

Shwets

I used to be besotted by this perfume. Has it changed? As suddenly it made me feel queasy. The oud note seemed different. I used to love this and after a few years its not the same.

It was at the Jo Malone's store.

Probably it's my nose playing up.

zakazaley

This is beautiful! I love Jo Malone perfumes, and this one! Gorgeous! Rose and oud - it's very very delicious. A really lovely blend. Rich and smooth, sweet and refined. The oud is very gentle and soft, allowing the rose to dominate, and that's lovely. It's a beautiful, fresh and natural rose, very realistic. And the praline is lovely, not overwhelming at all, not even too sweet! It's such a beautifully blended perfume. I love it.

Guinea54

This is not really my cup of tea since I am not a big fan of most rose based fragrances. That being said, for a rose oud I can at least appreciate that it was done well.. The rose is there and prominent but it isn't totally overbearing.. although definitely rose focused. The oud is there, its present but its not over done or harsh. As it dries down on my skin the rose picks up in front of the oud. Both are pretty smooth and blended together with a slight sweet edge. My favorite part of the fragrance is the opening where the oud stands out more. As it dries down on my skin I get more rose than oud or praline. I don't see this fragrance as syrupy sweet as some other people have stated. To me the Rose and Oud are the main players and the praline is just a dab in the background to sweeten it up slightly and keep it from being a dry fragrance. Overall a smooth rose and oud blend with a slight touch of sweetness that makes it a sweeter rose but not a candy sweet fragrance.
My personal taste Scent 2/5
Objective rating scent for people into rose. 4/5
Longevity 5/5
projection 4/5

topdogrwd

This is truly a smooth elegant fragrance. Never had a complaint about it. Other fragrances in the same genre are

Armani Rose D' Arabie
Panah Velvet Oudh

All this fragrances make are mostly catered to people who like smooth and not to over whelming juices.

MFK Satin Mood is in the similar vibes but differs due to the benzoin notes.

Addict2Perfume

Velvet Rose & Oud by Jo Malone is a bewitchingly sweet praline-rose blend with a woody resinous oud and a whisper of clove. I love smelling this throughout the day because sometimes I get a sweet lingering of rose or I get a burst of oud reminding me of what a chameleon this scent is. For a cologne the oud in this is pretty powerful, which is a good thing for people like me who like stronger fragrances. It is great to wear in the winter especially when it is snowing out, I love spritzing it all over my thick-knit sweaters because it smells so warm and cozy even when it is 20 below out!

AshLeigh512

This fragrance is amazing. I love floral scents and this one is deep, velvety and so different than your normal light floral. I absolutely love it.

Dean ja

A mans perspective:
I love this scent. I am bringing home a vial sample for my wife to test it on her, but at the store, it blew me away. Classy, seductive, beautiful, strong, but not too strong. Its floral without smelling like ALL of the other floral frags. The cashier sprayed some on the bow attached to the box (bought something else), and I am still smelling it. I wont leave my wife alone if she is smelling like this!!!

Svengali

I was in Canada when I smelled this at a store. The term 'Cologne Intense' by Jo Malone is no mistake, you're going to reek of this stuff if you spritz on even more than a dab, its that strong. I felt at the time that the magic of rose fused with oud was mysterious, sensual and elegant. I love oud and I love rose, I hadn't encountered them together and found this unique. I imagined the woman who would wear this as a dark enchantress, a woman who is equal parts man eater fused with successful business woman. I reveled in wearing this for a few weeks but discovered wearing it in the warmth of summer is a bit off. It did better in Canada when it was raining and in the 50s-60's, here in the 80-90s, its turned. I will give it another chance in the cooler months but its too sweet when the weather is warm. I don't get the same eyebrow raising response to my scent as I do just wearing a nude amber oil on my skin, the sweetness is cloying.

However, there is something elegant and beautiful about this fragrance. I feel if Jo Malone amped up the spice, toned down the sweetness and made it a bit more oriental, it would dazzle.

I give it a B+

jayssen

I love rose fragrances, especially those that weigh down the sweet rose notes with Oud. I have had this fragrance for a long time, and have really enjoyed it, but I always felt that if only Jo Malone had left out the syrupy sweet praline/chocolate notes, this would be perfect. Then I smelled Armani's Rose D'Arabie - perfection.

If you don't have the budget for Rose D'Arabie, the Jo Malone is a suitable stand in.

dmetzger

I have just been brutally pimpslapped by nostalgia.

Does anyone remember the Jeff Leatham candle "Voodoo Rose"? It is my favorite scent of all time and I have spent too much money in the past trying to replicate it, going so far as to have a scent custom blended to try and match it to no avail.

I'm a rube.

Should have bought this.

It smells as damnmear close to Voodoo Rose as I can remember and it brought tears of nostalgia to my eyes the moment it hit my nose at the Jo Malone store in South Coast Plaza. Bought it on the spot and I can hardly wait to get it on my skin tomorrow after I scrub off everything from today.

Might be a new signature fragrance.

Update: I applied a single spray to dry clean skin earier today and after a shower, put some lotion on my forearms and reapplied-here's what happened:

Dry skin test: it opens hard and sweet with dark red smokey rose heart and spices, the oud wood comes out dark and sweet also with a hint of almost lavender that is a mere echo but a deightful surprise. It lasted a few hours with above average projection and remained fairly linear. Showered so didn't get a chance to test past the three hour mark.

On clean skin with minimal unscented lotion, same application areas (forearms): what a revelation. The same notes are still there and potent but I also pick up trace amounts of damp earth and maybe even night jasmine to my nose. A hint of cinnamon and incense make appearances too. Three hours in now and I still catch little whifs of it on myself.

On my skin, this performs better then Amouge Lyric. Seriously.

Four hours in and it remains fairly linear and vibrant if somewhat muted on projection.

Scent 10/10
Projection 7/10
Sillage 6/10
Longevity 7/10

Definitely signature scent worthy.

ameagari

it's not entirely awful, but its just too sweet to my nose. the oud has no balls, and the composition just ends up smelling really safe and oddly fruity. the longevity is also pretty poor on my skin (4-5hrs max), i can't say i dislike the scent, its a pleasant one, but there are soooooo many better scents in the rose-oud sub genre.

ccromer

Longevity of this one is better than a lot of other JM scents. Normally I wouldn't wear rose but this is nice and not too feminine or rosy.

Mo1

Same vibe as Al Haramain Madinah by Al Haramin minus the fruity note and the price range of course. I would say If you're someone who really like this one, you must have Madinah by Al Haramin for the day time and Jo Malone's for the night time. I bought this one for $170 100ml and Madinah by Al Haramin for $10 15ml. :)

Jo Malone Velvet Rose & Oud is another rose and oud perfume but it's very nicely done. It's not overwhelming or cloying and it's not too loud either. This is a beautiful, non-offensive, office-wearing rose and oud perfume.

sanaa.dakheel

Jo Malone's prices are soooo expensive for not worthy scents.. stays for only 2 hours maximum..

Mellyhelly

Eventually I could test this one and I was not disappointed. It's a typical rose-oud combo, no more no less, but quite well done, wether the oud is genuine or synthetical (I guess the latter).
The rose is vibrant, not heavy, rather fresh in the opening.
It's really the type of scent that I could wear just in any moment as a favourite, reminiscent of Montale Aoud Queen Rose without the saffron nor hibiscus.
The close is not overpowering and thanksgod praline or whatever is very tamed.
A fine fragrance with an eyeblink to the East.

scarlett.angel

This is a beautiful scent but way too strong for me. I love all things rose, and this is what I imagine the black velvet roses that I have in a vase on my dresser would smell like, if they had a smell. It's a very rich, sultry, intoxicating, gorgeous red rose, but the sweetness is just too overwhelming and becomes too cloying for me to wear. It's like the sensation of being covered in a very heavy red velvet blanket and not being able to breathe properly. Funny the reviewer below me mentioned he has the Red Velvet & Oud candle; because I was thinking just the exact same thing with this scent; what a gorgeous candle it would make!

On the plus side, if you do enjoy wearing this; longevity is great. On my skin this is a real powerhouse. I applied only 1 dab from a rollerball last night, and the scent was so strong it was making me nauseous when I went to bed, and when I woke up, I could still smell it on my wrist. So 10/10 longevity. Really high quality fragrance and for the price it should be. Absolutely beautiful scent but unfortunately just not wearable for me personally.
I'd love the candle version though please!
PS. The Velvet Rose & Oud dry body oil and body creme both sound amazing too.

annettepe

I do not own the perfume version of this scent however do own a candle in Velvet Rose Oud. It is such a beautiful fragrance, very sultry, warm and attractive. I am a huge candle lover and am obsessed with this one. It makes my whole room smell so lovely (even without burning it) as its a very strong candle. Really interested in the perfume as well as I adore the scent !

To me this smells like straight up oud sweet rose with sweet amber throughout. Even though amber/vanilla is not listed I do detect it. However after looking at the notes I think its definitely the praline. Creamy, sweet with a slight cocoa combination. I love that the glass is black because it does remind me of a dark mysterious scent. So beautiful !

closetlikeboots

wow wow wow. This is everything I have ever wanted in a perfume. Sexy, sultry, hypnotic, deep yet fresh and clean- can this be so. The dry down takes you on a journey. I honestly feel you could wear this anywhere; to work- keep application very minimal, on a date- goes without saying, winter through to summer. Though on a very hot day I would prob give it a pass.

I can smell the rose and oud on first application. The sweetness ( praline?) then kicks in and lasts throughout the duration, drying down to something fresh and salty like the sea yet keeping the sweetness and soft wood smell.

It is 'clean' version of the arabic scents I always catch a whiff of some women wearing and love.

This is not masculine at all, though if i try hard enough, I guess a guy could get away with it...except for the dry down keeps getting more feminine in my mind. Better to go for Jo Malone's Pomegranate Noir which is too masculine for me.

This is a very masculine rose on my skin, and I love it.

I first got this as a sample along with L'Artisan's Voleur de Roses and WOW this is the complete polar opposite scent.

Velvet Rose & Oud, to me, smells like the feeling of falling in love. Voleur de Roses, on the other hand, smells like being DUMPED right when you realised you were in love. I need both of these in my collection.

Anyway, this fragrance is sweet, rich, comforting, inviting... a little intoxicating. I can imagine myself wearing this anywhere, I don't really think it's possible to be offended by this.

It's lovely. I definitely recommend it if you like sweet rose fragrances but maybe want something a little more masculine than your typical rose scents.

Dark Curls

God this smells so rich and good..that is all.

This is fantastic, the rose is done well here in the same vein as that in Jo malone’s Red Roses but with more depth and less fruity. Much denser. Unfortunately it comes with a hefty price tag. For someone who wants this rose oud theme on a budget you can try out Al Haramain’s Marwah. It is 50 duram which is 1/15th the price of Jo Malone’s version. The Al Haramain rose top note is sharper but they smell similar once the initial stage has passed.

want want want want! I love aoud rose petals and damascus aoud by Montale, so I am curious to try this

It's dark and sweet. It is the kind of stuff I mostly wear later at night so I can smell it on my self. I feel too selfish to share this fragance in a social setup :)
It's probably not meant for work or any other professional setup.
THere is also not much of an evolution on the fragance from the spray all the way to the dry down. It is what it is. You get what you are spraying and it stays that way for a few hours. But by no means this is an insult to this fragance. Linearity can be awesome too.
Having said that, the funny thing is that though I never smelled anything close to this cologne, based on the basic ingredients, I would be surprised if other versions of the same formula existed somewhere in the middle east.
