Artisan by John Varvatos is a Citrus Aromatic fragrance for men. Artisan was launched in 2009. Artisan was created by John Varvatos and Rodrigo Flores-Roux. Top notes are Clementine, Tangerine, Marjoram and Thyme; middle notes are Orange Blossom, Ginger, Lavender and Jasmine; base notes are Musk, Woodsy Notes and Amber.

After vintage concept of its antecedent the third masculine fragrance, Artisan, was presented on the market in March 2009. It is constructed as a citrusy-herbal fragrance which announces spring and fresh air created by John Varvatos and Rodrigo Flores-Roux of Givaudan, who worked on other Varvatos' editions.

The fragrance opens with Sicilian clementine, tangelo fruit, Mexican tangerine, aromatic thyme, Spanish marjoram and Greek lavender. A heart adds North African orange blossom, Indian plant Murraya, combination of jasmine and orange, an ingredient used in creation of the first fragrance. There are three sorts of ginger: Nigerian, Chinese and "purple ginger" developed in Givaudan laboratory. A base encompasses Kephalis wood and Geaorgewood, along with amber-like Belleambre and musky Serenolide.

Its flacon was designed by Jon Cisler Design, and it shaped it similar to its antecedents. Available as 75ml and 125ml edt.

I like this one, but I also get that synthetic lemon cleaning solution profile from this. Don't think I could buy a bottle because I'd be worried about smelling like cleaner. I have smelled Artisan Pure and I think that one is more universally appealing.

mravenec

A disappointing release, but maybe then I'm biased because I've started with Artisan Pure...
The fragrance is nice in itself but it definitely lacks character. It is nice, fresh, bubbly and quite sweet actually, and I can't help but picture a young boy wearing this. It might be suitable for an occasion where you'd want to be the blandest and most unabrasive person possible; the only setting I can think of is maybe an interview? But then again if you're being interviewed you'd like to shine and be picked for your personality and not just because you're "meh", so in the end I doubt whether this juice would be suitable for that...
Another thing is that in here it's almost exclusively aromachemicals that come into play and the projection/longevity is very pedestrian.
I'd say suitable for a young boy in their early teens as a first perfume, otherwise there are tons of other luminous, airy and light fragrances out there but which use way more naturals and thus have more depth and interest.

I remember having this years ago. It was my favorite go to when I wanted to wear my good stuff. It was for some
Reason crisp and sweet to me. Great fragrance no lie it’s one of my favorites that I’ve ever owned.

I love this fragrance. The way you go to a friend's house and it has a noticeably different scent. I wish my house could smell like this to other people as my signature scent. I would feel cool as fuck lol. In line with other soapy/linen fragrances. This is 5 star resort lobby juice lol. Hopefully nobody reads this and buys so I can be unique except I like this shit so much that I never wear it because i want to save the juice lol.

OrangeGuy

I hated this fragrance in the beginning, but 3 months later i absolutely love it. Idk if it's because of maceration but now it smells like a whiff of a citrusy cocktail down on the beach.

Longevity - 5 hours
Projection - 1 hour
Smell - 8/10

For the price very nice 👍

Homak1

Poor performance, no doubt, maybe 1 hour projecting with heavy overspraying 15-20. After that, close to the skin. But this is so good! Refreshing, lemony, orangy, natural smelling, and so mouthwatering. Has something feminine, though, but not in a bad way. If it's hot outside and you are looking for something to put you in a good mood, just buy it!

toosimilar

I got drawn to this one...even tho i am female, this one can definitely be pulled by strong ladies as well!

Chaselark

For me this is a respectable Spring/Summer gentle well balanced but neroli forward fragrance. A respectable neroli forward fragrance is not easily done in a cheapie and the criticism of this fragrance leaves me baffled as it does not smell cheap and punches above it's weight, mindful you can find 4.2 oz testers for under $30. It's not quite as dense in quality as a Banana Republic neroli-centric fragrance (which I have a few of), the neroli is not as pronounced, but I don't think it's trying to be. This fragrance is not trying to make a statement, it's not screaming 'notice me'...it's a charming Spring Summer grab & go daily driver that's not blue or green or aquatic or singularly focused on any one citrus like orange or melon or lemon but well blended and balanced. Categorically for what it is, bang for buck, it's hard to beat.

This one is spring and summer with a twist. Exciting. Engaging. Intoxicating. It's a scent that you love. Harmonious and playful at the same time. I will be using it all summer.

WilloWolfe

I love the scent and love the bottle. For me, it has kind of a playful smell to it and I would normally wear it when it was warmer out. It’s a very pleasant fragrance and I can’t imagine anyone being put off by the smell. I ran out awhile ago and haven’t gotten another. I will get another bottle someday though. I wish that it lasted longer on me though and I don’t think people can smell it unless close by.

Bose72

This is a lovely perfume but the longevity is terrible , opening with lovely notes and after 15-20 min disappears completely 😔 the longevity feels like a cheap perfume from Lidl or similar sellers....

Wormleyyy

This was one that tried to like but it’s just average at best as far as the scent being appealing. The performance is laughable it’s gone in 30 minutes to an hour tops. Not really one I would recommend to anyone. There are many other alternatives that smell better and last longer with this dna so this is meh for me.

SnifferBox

@Dj1200 I think you need to buy from somewhere reputable. This stuff is phenomenal juice. Uplifting citrus bomb that lasts all day.

Dj1200

Who signed off on this?
This stuff lasts all of 40 at best, same goes with Artisan Pure.
I apply lotion right out of the shower, and as soon as it dries, I apply another layer of lotion but with SPF30. Typically apply lotion before applying cologne makes my other colognes stick around much longer, opposed to applying cologne directly on my skin.

Unfortunately applying lotion before applying this stuff makes zero difference. I’ve had situations in the past where I can’t smell other colognes on me , but I still receive compliments. I was worried that maybe this was the case here with my two John Varvatos Artisan and Artisan Pure bottles, so I sprayed ten spray of each on a clean shirt, and when came back a couple of hours later, no dice, all I could smell was the fabric softener on my clean shirts.

What a total disappointment, if the scent lasted, they would be so worth it, they do smell really good, but them only lasting all of a few minutes should be criminal.

Both bottles were a blind buy, a few YouTube fragrance channels were raving about them.

Blind buying these bottles was a huge mistake on my part, I don’t mind paying premium prices for good scents, but this isn’t worth $100, or even 20.
I could’ve purchased a pallet of Clear Water for what I payed for these two bottles, and at least Clear Water lasts hours, and smells fantastic for what it cost.

Granted, they’re beautiful bottles, but other than decorations, it’s a complete waste of money.
Thank you

AJPkayla

As with Artisan Black, I loved the clementine/orange ginger opening. Liked this one way more than Artisan Pure. Unfortunately, like everyone else is experiencing, it suffers from the typical JV poor performance. Well crafted scent but gone way too fast.

#231 in my "Tour de Fragrance"

My first experience with John Varvatos was "Vintage." Like Vintage, there are things to like with Artisan, but only for a little while. Artisan, like most citrus-forward EDTs, disappoints on projection and longevity, but, if you like citrus, you'll like this at first, and it's on par with or better than any of the Acqua di Parma citrus freshies at a lower price. That's not a vote in favor.

Nice mandarin, white floral opening, not the rotting rind scent you get when citrus is done wrong, but that citrus fades out completely in well under a half hour, and what's left is a pretty standard and very weak aromatic-herbal-floral barbershop scent, just short of being that scented talcum powder "Newt" the barber used to dust the back of my neck after shaving. Even any skin scent is completely gone in under 2 hours. I like the smell, just not enough to own something this short-lived.

I'd put this in the same category with Nautica, Tommy Hilfiger, Tommy Bahama, Calvin Klein, Kenneth Cole, Canoe, Davidoff, Preferred Stock, Adidas, all that stuff you'd typically find at a Walgreens drug store: inoffensive, indifferent, indistinguishable, impotent. No one will recognize it, compliment it, or even know you're wearing it by mid-morning coffee break. And no one at the office will be impressed with the lovely bottle design as it sits on your bathroom shelf.

Don't waste your money. Save up for an EDP that performs. And if you really need to economize go for an EDP from an Arab fragrance house like Lattafa, Afnan, Armaf, Rasasi, Al Hamarain, and get something that smells great and makes it to lunch for under $30. You really don't save money by buying something you have to respray every two hours, and both I and your boss hope you have better things to do with your office time than run to the men's room to reapply underperforming bargain fragrances, which if you think about it, that's a weird thing to even have on your office "Things To Do" list.

benlippi

The opening is a bit sharp but the dry down is lovely. Very nice orange scent with some florals and ambery musk in the background. Italian vineyard vibes. Yes it doesn’t project much after the first hour but I have a travel atomizer for this and artisan pure as well that I keep with me to have an extra spritz whenever I feel it’s necessary. I love this line, excited to get more jv frags. Hands down the coolest bottle designs and the scents are unique and interesting.

lxaxtxi

That clementine is sweet, with a touch of green, on top of a lightly woody and musky base.
Beautiful, very mediterranean.

Too bad it’s unwearable, for me.
It lasts about 1 hour and projects nothing, it’s a skin scent.

Takuuuya

A fresh and gentle floral fragrance, but it's not long-lasting. Suitable for young men and also perfect for spraying on the bed as a sleep scent.

Smell : 7.5/10
Performance : 7.5/10
Uniqueness : 7/10 - Special but not very unique
Longevity : My room mate use it, about 1~2 hrs I think.
Sillage : Between intimate and moderate.
Value : 6/10 - A little expensive
Personal score : 7.5/10

R.diggity

Typical JV. Unique yet familiar. Absolutely intriguing as it develops. Then after about an hour…it’s done.

5-7 sprays gets you a non-obtrusive skin scent for about 3 hrs.

Great office scent

LoveSmellsss

I get citrusy pepper . It is very fresh but longevity is 30 mins top 🥺

PapaTLooch

I actually prefer this over Pure in some ways. It's a nice sharp blast of orange in the opening that dries down to a soft, soapy, spicy musk. It's both sour and sweet in a good way. Yes, it doesn't really last long but it's so cheap that I don't mind overspraying to compensate. Biggest complaint is that this takes the cake for the worst sprayer I've ever used.

DaveB413

This is it! A lot of people hype up Artisan Pure, but OG Artisan is better in every way, except for performance. This is that orange creamsicle scent, that I've heard people say ADG Absolu smells like but not at all. Artisan is pure orange, citrus, creaminess, while still being very masculine. Performance is the only downside, but at this price point ($40 for a 4.2 oz) it makes no sense to complain, just overspray. I do the curlyfragrance method with this one lol: 3 sprays to each pulse point (chest, inside of elbows, front back and sides of the neck, behind the knees if I'm wearing shorts) and on clothing as well. Perfect for summer time, never too cloying, it actually smells great in high heat and if you get sweaty. If performance was decent, it would be 10/10.

cell

Good thing I bought a decant. Similar to Kenneth Cole Black, which I have, and cannot finish. Reduce the mint and sweetness and, more or less, you got this. Black is also more fresher while this feels a bit dull to my nose.

A.Brock

This smells nice, think Neroli Portofino or ADP Essenza but utterly pointless. Even with 20 sprays on clothes, skin, hair whatever, it's gone in a flash. Shame

BaliBoy

As a boy who lives in island with sunny weather, this perfume is so intoxicating that i had ritual to sniff it before going to bed :D, the scent is giving the nuances of me going to Bali for vacation, dressed with white linen relaxed tshirt and sunglasess, and stay in Ubud’s villa with an traditional bamboo architecture. This perfume smell so refreshing and luxurious in a misterious way, citrus and luxurious ?? Yup, only match with this perfume that no one else can. But sorry the performance is not quite good but i found the atomizer is spraying not much, so im double the sprays each spot and get quite extended performance

Tee

On a hot, sweaty summer day, Artisan always provide burst of citrusy-floral freshness. It never cloys, just a splash of coolness. With a dash of ginger spiciness and fresh herbs, this was my first citrus forward fragrance love. To this day, I still enjoy generously spraying this to refresh myself in hot afternoon.

I actually love the fact that this is so fresh and light, that it will never offend anyone, even if sprayed liberally every hour or so!

CoachSignature88

This is by far the best in the artisan line if you ask me. At first I thought it was kinda soapy and weird but once It hit the dry down I knew I had to have a bottle. To my nose I get a beautiful ginger nuance and a unique sour orange scent with some musk in background. Great anytime daily scent. I would try before buying. You may not like that sour gingery orange scent. 8.5/10

Demus Anum

Very sensual scent. Bright honey sweet citrus and floral notes. Very pleasant notes throughout from top to middle to base. No heavy pungent base notes. Love it more than Artisan Pure.

k12

Gorgeous scent. Im kinda really loving it. Artisan is nice in slightly cool temperatures as i know its known mostly to perform in the heat. Heat will activate these notes of citrus , ginger, and the fantasy note of amber. lovely and a favorite often wear and love in my collezione' :)

HansyBarts

I loved this fragrance and my cousin recommended it to me and gotten a lot of compliments. A good summer and spring fragrance. It may not be for everyone but you can't go wrong with this. It gives a great soapy citrus vibe. Very underrated fragrance.

JV artisan reminds me of "royal tru-orange" a popular soda brand here in philippines. a strong like for me. what i get is fresh orange and thats it. pretty linear all throughout. moderate performance. versatile and can be worn in any occassion but exclusively during daytime. has a clean vibe but this vibe can get annoying at some point during the middle stage of its lifespan and i suggest not to overspray if you cant bear through it. more masculine than JV artisan pure. this shines on hot weather.

whitekid3

7/22/23 update: it smells like freshly cut grass and lemon peel to me ... very floral and citrusy, but not overly too floral like some women's perfume or disgustingly citrusy like ADG ... very nice for the spring or summer weather ... a client of mine said it smelled nice but thought it was a lil too feminine for a man to wear

Timmay88

Get too much floral vibes from this one and I think it's a little too feminine for me at least.. "No-go" for me.

djbethell

The ‘60s/‘70s wicker encased bottle immediately transports me back to a holidaying as a child in Mallorca. Not only is the design full-blown Balearic, it captures the essence and freshness of the island at that time; a sunny, citrus breeze bringing down the scents of mountain herbs, all tinged with Spanish soap.
There really is nothing like this and it’s the only Varvatos scent that remains a must in my collection. My nose gets so high on this.
10/10

Rob321x

How in hell does this have dislikes? This is super gorgeous, bright citrus, woody scent mixed with ginger that I enjoy more than artisan pure tbh. I personally think you can wear this beauty all year around. 10/10

jesseshinn

Lovely citrus burst. Wish it lasted longer, thankfully it’s not expensive.

Splashyminion

Floral orangy goodness. Very elegant. Unisex IMO. Dries down to a musky soapy base. Quite addictive tbh. It's like walking in a garden during spring.

Neptino

No performance. Must over spray to get a trail / performance. Poor base notes imo. Smell reminds me of home in the Carolinas, with woods covered in Jasmine.

JongheonKim

soapy and nice citrus starts and then full of lavender smells kicks in your nose. it's nice variation. once it used to be most famous fragrance for men in korea

Thevoiceofthesnake

Soapy.
Moderate performance.

Daviako

Love the smell, hate the performance. I am not sure if that can be attributed to the bottle I have being a 4-year-old tester, but from the comments on here, I can see it’s a systemic issue regardless. The fragrance quality is so good, the Orange/Clementine note is really strong, and it makes the poor longevity even more of a letdown. I’d love to wear this more in the summer because it can set a mood really quickly, I just don’t want to have to keep reapplying every 2-3 hours. For the very low price I paid ($10 for a 125mL at an Elizabeth Arden outlet), I can put up with its shortcomings.

Update 1/24: I sprayed this side by side with Clinique's Happy and have to say I prefer this more due to its complexity. While it is citrus forward, you can really tell where the herbal notes come in and help break up the monotony of citrus that Happy holds onto. Even though this is harder to find and more expensive, it's still the better fragrance of the two.

8/10

ixo

I love this scent along with Artisan Pure, but Artisan Pure lasts a whole 30 seconds for me and this actually lasts like its a real cologne. :P

It's got a kind of soapy, fruity, slightly musky/woodsy smell to it - it's pretty unique and worth a try.

JanFerraer

Just got one today, im so happy and its lighten up my mood. Its uplifting clean fresh and you can really smell the citrus. Its very unique. I just love it.

tomer21

It’s like a ginger-citrus-musk-soap.
I use it lightly and it is…
unique & beautiful.

Jalr2

I love how this smells. But it simply does not last. I wish there was something like this that actually lasted and proyected better. I get orange/ginger clean smell. It's just okay. Not bad but not great either.

petani_tomat

It's a beautiful scent. I smell this as a fresher for the first time and then I just put it on the corner of my table. After one month the scent is really different now. It's kind of lil sweet and has a bright white floral on it. The performance is average about 5 or 6 hours on my skin and sometimes it's only 4 hours. Now, I just feel this thing is a beautiful scent white floral that uplifts my mood every day.

From Indonesia

Bwatts79

It smells nice at first, but within 10 minutes it's a skin scent, &even then it smells too powdery. I don't get the hype with this line- I've tried several & they're all disappointing. I found this bottle at a clearance store for $20. It was a blind buy. If anything it's an ok work wear. At least I know it won't be offensive or overpowering.

PierreLouis

Harsh opening. It mellows after two minutes reminding his little brother Pure but still less pleasant. If you are undecided go for Pure, that I find to be be superior. If you like soapy fragrances you can give this a go but I would not blind buy unless you don't mind potentially waste $50AUD. Projection is not big but you would not want that with this fragrance, a whiff here and there it's perfect. Review based on a store test and I won't buy owning already Pure. Beware of enthusiasts about this.

Bfreepro417

I have tested and owned so many frags and none of them are quite like this. I find this scent to be absolutely perfect as a soothing, relaxed, clean and uplifting fragrance. It’s got an absolutely beautiful blend of citrus and floral notes, with enough woody spice/musk to keep it a thoroughly masculine fragrance. It’s gentle, but not feminine. It honestly doesn’t smell synthetic at all to me, in fact it’s among the most natural and well blended I’ve ever smelled, as far as designers go it’s THE most natural, I compare it with Creed and Tom Ford as far as quality and how well it’s blended. I’m kicking myself for not discovering this sooner. When it comes to an after shower, relaxed evening out, casual time with your spouse or family, this fragrance is the best I’ve ever smelled. Breezy but it still has depth.

I actually strongly prefer this one to artisan pure, which seems to get way more love in general. I enjoy them both very much, but this one has less of a tangy brightness and has a soothing, almost watery coolness to it. It’s more spicy and well rounded to my nose. Truly stunning.

Longevity really isn’t as bad as some people make it out to be. It’s not a beast, it’s not loud, like I mentioned earlier- it’s gentle yet masculine. Projection isn’t very strong, but longevity seems fine to me (just don’t go in expecting 8 hours). Sometimes I do wish it was a little stronger, but I also know that would almost certainly ruin the natural smelling blend as it would need more synthetic (and often fairly offensive to my nose) aroma chemicals like all the other modern frags.

I think this lasts and projects just as much as Creed Silver Mountain Water and Himalaya. Those are 300-400 dollar fragrances. I got this one for like 30 bucks. It INSTANTLY got placed in my top 5 fragrances. And it’s not even spring or summer yet. It’s just that beautiful to me.

About me: 32 years old, and I tend to favor lighter, more refreshing fragrances with a touch of smoothness/warmth.

Detman101

Gah...I want to have this scent so badly but the longevity of this frag is through the floor. Hell...all the Varvatos frags have no longevity, it's a shame. If I could add some fragmatic-viagra to their fragrances i'd buy em all...

drbms86

If you love citrus scents, then you'll love Artisan. I'm big on citrus myself because it always smells clean, light, summery, and casual. It won't give folks a headache. It's not going to overpower everyone, so it's great for an office environment. Artisan is an excellent everyday fragrance. I'm on my second bottle of it. This is certainly one of those "goldilocks" fragrances for me...just right!

S_Mazza

I am a bit underwhelmed by John Varvatos Artisan. It's a decent citrus scent, rather pleasant, but not exceptional. It smells slightly synthetic. After the citrus, there are some faint tones of flowers and herbs, particularly a thyme scent that I think is pretty nice. But the middle and base notes are so faint that there's not much action left after the citrus evaporates. Mostly, what I get in the middle and base is a soapiness, which makes me think I forgot to rinse my hands after washing.

In terms of projection and longevity, it's ... not very good. This will tempt you to overspray to chase the pleasant but fleeting scent. It doesn't seem to help much.

I don't hate this, but at prices like $0.35/mL or more, I don't really think it's a good choice. Cuba Orange is less refined, but pretty similar, and lasts longer, for less than $0.10/mL.

gev_grigoryan

Very disappointed with Artisan, I blind-bought is and it just smells too chemical and too synthetic! Opens citrusy, and when you think aha this is something special when you wait for some sweetness to come, this peppery blast steps in that would kill all the flies around.
Still, for me, the best is JVNJ Blue.

washudtoj

After having tested

A) Artisan
B) Artisan Blu
C) Artisan Pure
D) JV x NJ (dark blue bottle)
E) Oud

I can say with confidence that Artisan is my favourite in the line so far. I'll give Artisan 4 stars, Blu 3.5 stars, Pure 2.5 stars, JV 1.5 stars, and Oud 0 star.

Artisan is citrus aromatic, with more emphasis on the citrus, which I like. It does still smell chemical but for the price, it's decent enough. Don't expect Terre d'Hermès Eau Très Fraîche quality though. They're both citrus but on entirely different leagues.

I know Artisan Pure is hyped up a lot in the community, but I don't like or care for it one bit. I made a mistake blind buying a bottle of it and now it's sitting in my cardboard box collecting dust. It's got a herbal quality to it that I detest. Thankfully this one doesn't.

If you are thinking of blind buying ANY JV fragrance, don't. Sample it first. You don't know if it's going to hit the right spot on you.

Update: I just watched a video on YouTube and the reviewer (Malinee) mentioned this smelt like Orange Fanta/Mirinda (hypersweet orange carbonated water). I couldn't agree more. This is exactly like that, only it's not sweet or fizzling.

MY37

Thank God this one that JV chose to keep on their website. Artisan black has similar profile but less performance on me.

Cloverstone

I am really enjoying this fragrance right now, opting to wear it as a woman, however I typically layer it, using it as my main base. Although, it does work on its own if preferred...I can also definitely see the allure and being drawn in to a man who is wearing it.

Anything citrus, I'm a fan of, add in woody (in this case, herbal) and ginger, and I'm sure to love it. I typically do not like sweet/fruity notes (I feel they're derived from clementine and jasmine here?), they are very subtle and work so nicely with this blend.

The look of the bottle, usually not being terribly important to me, but it is quite unique and enticing, and embodies what this EDT smells like perfectly. A multi-layered citrus, woodsy/herbal, fresh and clean (not soapy), scent with just the right amount of spiciness to it to cut some of the citrus notes.

As for layering, there are many directions it can be taken, but as said, I prefer this as the base and add a minimal amount of another on top. Rose in particular goes extremely well for a softer feel, either The Body Shop's British Rose or Elizabeth Arden's White Tea Wild Rose. To amp it up, again from Elizabeth Arden's White Tea Ginger Lily for the added ginger and a soft floral touch. Or to bring out an even stronger citrus vibe, virtually any in the category work well, I have tried J.Lo's (original) Glow and Elizabeth Taylor's Brilliant White Diamonds. (Regardless of my layer choices, I am without fail, asked what I am wearing by friends and strangers alike.)

Lastly for uses, it has become my vehicle's scent, preferring something slightly more masculine. I add it to the diffuser along with Demeter Black Ginger for that extra punch of clean spice, and always receive compliments from passengers.

The longevity surpassed my expectations (it remains on clothes until washed) and typically lasts 6+ hours, the sillage is just right in my opinion, it is quietly discovered, versus in your face, when someone is within your personal space...slightly beyond at around 4 feet, and the dry down is pretty much the exact same as first spritz.

Whether male or female, this is a lovely, and very versatile fragrance with strong appeal.

Bigmike650

People are always hyping Artisan Pure, but the original Artisan is so underrated. Beautiful fragrance👌🏽

nufrancis

A fragrance noob here. Just bought a Decant of Artisan and the Pure one. I dont want to be harsh but the opening smells similar to my car freshener - Little Tree Black Ice. The Black Ice is a bit darker and aggressive though. Maybe I would like it if I havent smell my car freshener before. The positive side is the dry down, very fresh and calming scent.

Hassan1996

Honestly reminds me of alcohol lemon cleanser in the barbershops

FirstSense

This fragrance smells exactly like the bottle looks. An organic orange smell with dried reed and countryside herbs like thyme and lavender. It’s an unique smelling warm ginger citrus. I’ve never traveled to Mexico but I can imagine it smells like the Mexican countryside or Mexican food. There is something weird about this fragrance but I can’t explain why or what. Rodrigo Flores-Roux and John Varvatos cooked some strange and intriguing recipe. The soapy smell in the dry down is nice and the orange mandarin remain so the fragrance stays fresh. The performance is mediocre and there is almost no projection after the first hour. But somehow I really like this. And the bottle looks wonderful and unique. For this price absolutely a pleasant supplement to my growing frag collection.

egensler

In my opinion this is similar to Mugler cologne. Not only does Artisan smell better, but it lasts longer on my skin. I got this when it first came out about 10 years ago, and it smells just like I remember. People talk about how this does not last long and disappears after 30 minutes or whatever. I can only speak in my experience, but it lasts for 6+ hours. Though it is a skin scent for most of it. Highly recommended if you are looking for a clean, soapy and safe fragrance. Not all situations call for being the center of attention. I can't imagine anyone disliking this scent. Highly recommended!

Marzepam

It’s so unique and so good. In short words; citrus, ginger soap. Beautiful dry out remaining soapy accords. Not very projecting but good enough to be best choice for summer warm days.

pixiecup

Many of you have described this perfectly. Easy to wear fantastic summer scent. It is totally unisex for its quite sweet citrus, and not too challenging or deep base. There is a musk note on the very base of this that just doesn’t quite work with the freshness to my nose. It’s a finely crafted scent but not a solid 10 for me based on that. But a definite 9.
Guys…you are casual, easy-going, but know quality when you see it. You have feelings and aren’t scared of them. You are comfortable with who you are and you project this. To The Right Woman, you are a magnet.

Enjoy ❤️

This is one of the first fragrances I bought when I started this expensive addiction. I honestly love this so much still, I'll spray a little on my wrist and enjoy it for 10 minutes before it vanishes into oblivion... BECAUSE IT'S A JOHN VARVATOS SCENT.

I once sprayed this 17 times. 17. Think about how terrible that sounds, imagine being around someone who sprayed a fragrance 17 times. My friend didn't even notice it within 1 foot.

It sucks. It's a fantastic scent ruined by horrid performance. I've never experienced anything quite like it. If this projected, even the smallest amount I'd gladly give it a 9/10 but it's a 7/10.

Some people get a little burst of this after 2 hours. I do as well, but it's not enough to praise it and say it performs. It's a 1-2 hour scent, if that. If it's not very hot/humid day you literally get nothing.

Again, 7/10.

RogueZXRO

I just got this at Marshall's for $40 for the 125 ml travel set which was a steal. I like it, it is a nice chill mellow scent. I get lots of citruses that smell like sweet orange peels. The bad part is that it does not perform so I would not recommend buying this unless you get a good deal on it. I suggest spraying extra on yourself and your clothes and you might get slightly better performance.

AbeStreet

A pleasing clean citrus scent. I thought it was a moderate performer, sticking close to the skin after an hour or two, longer on clothes. However, I have an office job with temperature control and never really get hot. Later in the day while engaged in physical activity outdoors I was surprised to find that Artisan became active again with a small but nice scent bubble. Very impressed!

dh731733

I like this, but I only wear this when I'm around the house, and I don't plan to go out. I heard someone say it smells like Pledge or some other citrusy household cleaner, and I can't unsmell it. That doesn't mean it smells bad by any means. I think that's very informative to the fragrance. Spray yourself with it when you're laying around at home collecting dust. Perfect use! While I'd never use it to grab anyone's attention, I've still gotten compliments from grocery store cashiers and such.

You can wear it whenever. Day or night. Spring, summer, fall. Might feel out of place in winter though.

It only lasts for a few hours on me (but my bottle is insanely old so that could be part of it).

I wouldn't pay retail, but on sale or discounted, I say grab a bottle and take care of yourself while at home alone. Probably best to get a decant or tester.

PierreLouis

@CoinLaundry, you can't rely on any fragrance to cover body odour. What work with that is water and soap. Try you and your kid will be surprised.

CoinLaundry

It smells just like everybody says and is very affordable. You should get it, probably.

I got this for a kid. It smells great, hardly projects, and doesn't cost a ton to go dripping off of a sweaty Florida athletic boy. My 11-year-old was curious about fragrances because I sure do like them while he is also insecure about being called out for smelling really good because kids are terrible, so he smells like wrongly-defrosted ground beef, naturally. This is not an insult directed at him but objective truth regarding the smell of 11-year-old boys. He sometimes wears this and smells like I can't smell him beefing out of the other room; a-plus.

mapache

IMO...this is basically Artisan Pure....but add woods & ginger....???
A big like, however I surprisingly prefer Artisan Pure...lol.

spartaksci

Good scent. I prefer Artisan Blu over this as a summer fragrance, but this is not a disappointment. Very green and citrusy, has a "clean" fresh vibe. Doesn't project much, but lasts about 4-5 hours. Pretty good on very hot days. Not mind-blowing, but i give a thumbs up to this one and it's a safe wear too.

AndrewAnto

Blind bought this one because it is cheap and someone said it's pretty close to Artisan Pure, well, it isn't. Not a bad scent, but nothing special at all. I just use it as an in home scent, meaning I put it on just when I'm staying home.

Zauberhaft

So unbelievable, it's just too good that everyone knows this. It's scent is lovely from the top note to the base. I live in Korea, everyone knows Artisan Varvatos, even people who doesn't use fragrances know them. I love this one, but I'd give just 'ok' 'cause pretty sure that this would not impress anyone.

Cair Paravel

Pleasant, reminds me of Banana Republic Neroli Woods.

stephen.redeker

Just got this. Very pleasant soapy citrus scent, but only lasts a short time (as many people have said already). Still, this is a worthy spring/summer scent that's beautiful, even if it lasts less than two hours. Just spray it on again; it's not expensive.

Guitar 2016

It is a good fragrance but it is not special! It opens up with like fresh soapy citrusy then it changes like slightly spicy and floral, dry down is musky woody. This perfume is suitable for the spring and summer. I like Artisan by John Varvatos.

Rating : 6.5 / 10

benilla

Great scent but performance is poor. Ideal for situations like a date or office where you don't want to project and be loud

DEDMAR

This fragrance is very fresh, soapy and pleasant to wear. Bottle design is exceptional. Good scent for gym session or to apply after getting out of the shower to feel fresh for a little while. Longevity is unacceptable, though. 2-3 hours and it is gone. Similar case as with majority of John Varvatos fragrances. The only 2 exceptions beeing Dark Rebel and Artisan Pure (basically the only two worth buing imho). Do not recommend buying Artisan, unfortunatelly.

0766811609

I used this one the whole summer and I have to say this one really is good!

Office: 10/10
Gym: 10/10

Pleasant and does not offend anyone.

ORANGE CITRUS-LIGHT FLORAL-LIGHT WOODY-CLEAN FRESH LINEN
GREAT SMELLING & NON-OFFENDING

This is the 1st JV Frag that I ever brought, and 1 of the 1st frags that started my collection, 1 of my favorites and go to(s) especially for spring and summer;

Bold Orange Citrus is what you get off the bat and mainly throughout along with a light floral and bright linen clean like light freshness (maybe from the musk???) and then a light-moderate wood accord gets prominent as it dries toning the floral and sweetness down some (and the sweetness in this frag isn't sugary or syrupy, its light sweetness from the citrus and a tiny bit from the florals), very well composed reserved orange fragrance, 1 of the better done orange-based "designer" fragrances, maybe not the most complex but just beautifully done.

Projection/Sillage: DECENT, not loud but light aromatic, but definitely an in-close fragrance pretty much from start to finish.

Performance/Longevity: DECENT, very light/mild so you can be liberal with the sprayer but it's one of those fragrances that dissipates in the air after a couple of hours (maybe 3-5hrs)

Atomikbomb_

My husband preferred this sample go to me because it wasn't his style, he said it was too sweet for him. I do get that, because the orange notes definitely shine in the opening to middle (I think it's decidedly unisex though).

I'm surprised that marjoram isn't the highest voted note, it's easily the most prominent to my nose after the opening and into the drydown. I own marjoram essential oil and it definitely smells of it distinctly here. It's an unusual note that I don't see often in perfumery, and it smells very garden/foodie, but I'm enjoying the uniqueness of it alongside the orange and orange blossom.

It has a fair amount of musk and aromatic components, and there's a slight sourness as it lingers. I think the longevity is quite good actually, and the sillage is moderate.

Overall I really like this and give it about a 7.5. To me, there's nothing necessarily sexy or anything about this (in aromatherapy marjoram is often used for relaxation and to decrease libido haha!) but it's refreshing and interesting...I keep smelling my shirt and it's oddly calming.

Kronstadt

Fantastic fragrance, but terrible projection and longevity

Fragstino

Smells like a batch of citrus fruit, but by the time I'm at work it's pretty much a super close skin scent. For the price, I'd only recommend buying this to have as part of a collection once they're all gone.

piyux

John Varvatos Artisan Men EDT opens with a moderate projection of slightly sweet citrus, white floral, spicy, and soft musky accords. The opening is fresh, sharp, well blended, aromatic, and pleasant. The clementine, tangerine, and orange blossom blend their notes to create natural, aromatic citrus and white floral note; the thyme, marjoram, and ginger create a spicy touch that has the ginger ahead but the thyme and marjoram are not far back. The musk is the next noticeable accord, light white musk with a soft citrusy touch. The rest of the notes are support notes, some floral and woody. The fragrance is relatively linear, however, what is noticeable is the very fast drop of intensity, projection, and performance, the fragrance recedes to a skin scent in just minutes. Once John Varvatos Artisan Men EDT has reached its full dry-down, it can be summarized as a very low projection, citrus (clementine, tangerine), white floral (orange blossom) and spicy (ginger, marjoram, thyme) fragrance with very soft woody and floral accords. The fragrance feels casual, cheap, diluted, disappointing, diurnal, faint, fresh, low-quality, refreshing, short-lived, sour, sporty, slightly sweet, unisex, weak zesty, and pleasant.

@Ja85:

Do not wait to long if you like it......since John Varvatos Filed for Bankrupcy.

They can go out of shops and of stock
If the firm disappears prices may rise.

Ja85

I never purchased this scent but for some reason every time I’m at the mall I look for it and spray it on my wrist. There’s something about it that makes it unique and addictive. But for some reason I don’t know why there’s always something holding me back from purchasing a bottle. Maybe because my partner told me I smelled like a bathroom after spraying it. Regardless I really like the scent and I guess I’m gonna finally purchase a bottle!

ClashDaddy

Sad to say this, but...

JV Artisan smells like cheap soap.

And almost immediately, it turns into a faint skin scent for a few hours.
I don't like it. I don't buy perfume to smell like soap.

2/10 because it does have some longevity on my skin - but this one is a hard pass for me. Not sample vial worthy, let alone a full bottle.

colognefreak

This fragrance has obviously been reformulated.
I purchased it when it was first released and while it wasn’t a “beast mode” scent, it was an average performer. Today it’s really weak and that’s a shame because the originality is what made me buy it the first time. It has the orangey, spicy accords but is light enough to wear in the summer. My wife loved it and so did I.
This is one of the few fragrances I won’t buy again. It is a skin scent in about ten minutes and a weak one at that. What a shame.

Rob321x

a lot of hype for artisan pure, i prefer this one over pure. freash smell. probably the best performance out of the entire JV line.

slava19903

my 1st "summer" fragrance, amazing smell, love the fresh fruity smell,a must buy for summer.

mila476

I really like this. It's a nice fresh citrus, and I was testing it out with the idea of potentially getting it for my boyfriend, but now I think I might get it for myself... It doesn't smell manly on me and I think I could wear it as an everyday scent for warm weather. Lots of fresh orange--almost juicy? And then it becomes a really nice orange blossom scent that isn't sweet like in a lot of women's orange blossom perfumes. I feel like this could definitely be unisex, and it smells very summery and nice.

Da_Vinci1

Good professional soapy fragrance that’s masculine leaning but can also be worn by women in my opinion. Performance is moderate with me getting about 3-4 hours of noticeably scent which isn’t a problem if you reapply with an atomizer. Very mass appealing and non offensive making it a good safe choice for professional settings. If the notes above spark your interest then you can feel confident blind buying one since it’s so affordable.

HimMori

So just got a decant of this today and can i just say WOW....This is incredibly confusing. It smells synthetic for sure but at the same time pleasing?? I wouldn't ever say this is niche quality but it is blended alright.

If you're expecting loads of citrus like i was however look elsewhere it is completely out shinned by the ginger lavender musk combo. However if soap fragrance is your angle this is probably pretty great, but to me its hard to be a unique fragrance I enjoy when being this soapy.

Out of the John Varvatos fragrances I have smelled this is my least Favorite. Artisan Black and Pure However are actually unique if you're looking for fragrances to set you apart and i would say get both over the original artisan. As many other people have said Artisan Pure is rounding the edges of artisan and it does a fantastic job.

scent 3/5 SOAPPPPPPP
Projection 1/5 Bad
sillage 1/5 Bad
Price 4/5 Fantastic
Blind-buy worthy: If you're looking for soapy clean yes

marcel2782

At the top it seems cold, aqueous and very nice, but this good impression quickly goes away along with the quick drydown that reveals poor performance for a fancy bathroom cleaner artificial orange centered smell. Sometimes it smells like that forgotten OJ glass in the sink, when the juice already began to ferment and show signs of being rotten. There are better choices out there.

shpalman

At first sniff this feels like a one-dimensional copy of Tom Ford For Men, for anyone who feels like the Tom Ford is just too damn exciting.

There's a pleasant orangey opening but I can't really detect any ginger or indeed much of anything on the dry-down.

You may enjoy its subtlety but I prefer something I can continue to smell on myself. So I like it but I won't be buying it.

zadewee

Drydown is okay but the initial spray is very bad... lots of chemicals...

Martimat

Tested from a 2ml decanter from a solid online store , 2020. Orange generic without the finest ingredients so to say. Personaly did not find any special vibe.

TeaAndRoses

I received a small sample of this and it smells exactly like cheap bar soap to me. My husband says the same. Maybe Zest or Ivory? I can’t imagine paying money for this, or using the scent for anything other than a linen spray.

baerro

I'm not someone who usually dips her toes into the "men's fragrance" waters, but this is NICE. Perfect for warm weather freshness - strong citrus balanced with soft musk and a dash of ginger.

Edit: Smells great, but both sillage and longevity leave something to be desired. I'm glad I have my sample, but I won't repurchase.

AMajeedQT

A fresh citrus scent of clementine & tangerine, spiced up with musky ginger.

Not unique but very lovable scent.

Youthful/casual wear for warm/hot weather.

Big "Like"

Niki Immortal

So beautiful fragrance but so bad perfomance

DavinsKitchen

Smells very similar to original listerine.

MacGuffin

Smells generic, bitter and synthetic citrus, that one unripe fruit mixed with a bubbling soda drink. Weak longevity. You need to test this one before buying. I almost blind bought this, good thing my favorite shop accepted my request to exchange the purchase into another better performing scent after smelling the top note. I like this scent but not very highly. Bottle design is great but maybe I will try the black one or the white one next time.

7/10

mamoodeh96

It smells very good and gets compliments and so cheap but doesn't last sadly idk I get about 2 hours and then it's hard to smell

Mdox407

Good scent. Can be too citric so I only use it in summer, normally on scorching hot days.

As previously mentioned...performance isn't good but I find indications to keep a scent in my collection regardless of below average performance. (If I like the scent enough that is.)

I've received several compliments on it over the couple of months that I've owned it but I must say...my very FIRST wear of this fragrance...I was with my best friend and she absolutely could not STAND IT. Said it smelled exactly like an orange scented toilet or floor cleaner her parents used all her life. She was actually holding her nose closed and opened her window during our car ride to dinner.

Other than that...I've received a few compliments on it and I quite like the scent. It basically smells like oranges. In my opinion...the citrus WAYYYY overshadows the florals. I don't really smell any florals if I'm not mistaken. It's just a nice, cool, refreshing citrus scent for hot days.

Oranges. And more oranges.

I like the scent and am going to keep it but I have found better. Two of them (that I highly recommend also as alternatives and superior scents with superior performance)...are John Varvato "Artisan Acqua," and Ferrari's "Bright Neroli." Both are better scents and both perform better.

All in all...I still like this scent. I would be lying if I didn't say that I think it is somewhat overhyped and that I've found better summer scents. But it's good. Not a love...but a definite like that I will use until it is gone. Also noteworthy...I love the bottle. Very beautiful and very unique.

Longevity - 3-4 hours (but only projects for 60-90 mins)...then you're pressing your nose to your arm to smell it.

Projection - About 2-3 feet for that first hour. Then skin scent.

Overall Score - 7.5/10

A good tip for you guys - Overspray the neck. Normally I spray neck and arms about equally...2-3 sprays neck and 2-3 sprays each arm....but this one tends to last a little longer if you overspray your neck all the way around and add a few sprays to your shirt. You can get an extra 1-2 hours out of it that way. It'll just make the opening more acidic but that will fade in 10 minutes. Although I still recommend the two that I mentioned above...I voted above for this one with a "like." I love Artisan Acqua and Artisan Blu...now I MUST get my hands on John Varvatos "Artisan Pure."

Mark Sanchez

John Varvatos make great scents but they have to work on their performance.
Great scent with great bottle design.

le00000000000

This smells somewhat generic but enjoyable, the citrus on this bottle can be similar to drugstore perfume but the woody notes is what made the notes blend beautiful. Like most of reviewer said it smells very natural.
Like you went for a small walk to the wood behind your grandma's house, the grassy herbs smell that you touch between your hand seeped into your nose, very fresh. Masculine fragrance but female still can wears it.

interizta

This smell unbelievably beautiful, but performance is truly disappointment, before an hour become a skin scent, otherwise this perfume will be legend

My5Scents

Opens exhilaratingly with a beautiful refreshing blast of highly realistic tangerine riding a wave of neroli under a bright base of woods. Sounds fairly simple but it is so perfectly executed. An ultra clean effect that brings to mind a handsome, very well groomed, just shaved man straight from the barbers.

It’s an incredibly versatile scent that could easily be unisex, that could be worn at any age and although it brings to mind sunshine and warm weather it could be worn any day (but probably not for nighttime). It suits both formal and casual occasions.

I can’t imagine a better choice for office wear and it’s sure to garner compliments, I feel it’s a real crowd pleaser and 100% signature worthy.

Deserves much wider acclaim.

FatFragHead

John Varvatos has some of the best smelling fragrances in the game it's a shame that they don't perform worth a damn. They are EDT but more like EDC. TOO BAD!

boffin1979

This stuff is lovely. And the bottle is a work of art. It's one of those bottles that must be put on display. My dumb reach on weekends or whenever I'm kicking around the house on a mild sunny day. Definitely a unisex fragrance, and not in a bad way. Not masculine nor feminine. Just a universally pleasing scent. Mandarines with orange blossom and lily. Plain, simple, and oh-so natural! And that is what makes this fragrance so captivating.

My wife loves this and we share the bottle. On her it smells so sophisticated! On me, I smell like a Sicilian orchard keeper.

But for such a nice fragrance, the longevity is a joke. The manufacturers are taking the piss! 30 minutes and it's gone. It's a pain in the ass having to re-apply so frequently. Next time I'll spend the extra for Artisan Pure.

Rav Pahud

this is a skinscent fragrance and it opens with citrusy and herbs scents.. it does not last long even though i lived in tropical climate, and this is supposed to be a summer scents it supposed to smell loud at hot temperature but alas it simply not... but if you looking for soft skin frag this is definitely it!

oh-so-vague

The citrus opening is wonderful, but doesn't last long, and then the floral drydown reminds me waaaay too much of this toilet spray we once had... so I can't go around smelling like that!

RogerJr17

I've had this bottle for a long time. My ex-fiance and I were at Dillard's and I decided to look at some of the fragrances they had. I let her go through each one, smell it, and tell me if it was worth it to buy. She narrowed the list down to 3. Invictus, Armani Code, and this one. She smelled all 3 cards and was about to choose Invictus based on smell alone. I told her to spray Invictus and John Varvatos on each hand. She smelled both and, obviously, this one was the winner. Time for the breakdown.

Smell: Citrus and musky. Mainly what I get out of it. I just saw the note breakdown and, if there is ginger in it, you could have fooled me. I don't get ginger out of it. Smells nice, but I can see people saying this smells like furniture cleaner. It does have that effect. It's pretty non-offensive unless you get that furniture cleaner vibe.
Rating: 7/10

Projection: Not too loud, but yet, not too soft. It sits comfortably in the middle. It's pretty decent at the start, but dwindles fast to a skin scent. Good news is that this one is good for work!
Rating: 7/10

Versatility: This scent is not made for the cooler weather. This one is definitely made for the warmer months. The hotter, the better. As I said before, this one would be perfect for work.
Rating: 6/10

Overall rating: 6.7/10. This is why I advise you to trust your gut on your scents. Do not go by first smell alone or it will come back to bite you. Do I regret having my ex-fiance picking this one out for me? No. Will I be buying it again? No. It was a good introduction to John Varvatos, but I'm not sold on this one.

Artisan .... the clean worker

Green fresh
Aquatic
Clean
Powdery
Beach breeze
Lenin shirts man on the beach

The dry down is very powdery and clean with a hint of green acuatic notes.

Artisan has the same soul as Kenzo pour home but not the same scent
Both clean powdery acuatic.

Scent 9.6/10

Orfeus

Great citrus fragrence, just wished it would have better performance. It's extremely poor 4-6 hours. It could be a bit more fresh.

Scent: 10/10
Longevity: 3
Silage: 6 rated high, I don't think it needs to have an enormous silage, but a tad more than skin would be nice.

WhaleFingers

Glad I only had a .5 oz bottle, as this fragrance is caustic, and painful to my nose. Maybe it was to be a paint thinner substitute that ended up in the wrong bottle? It gives me a headache, and lingers in its sillage so you get waft after waft making it a further nuisance.

If you enjoy this scent, then it's a total winner, however it doesn't work for me, my wife hates it on me, and I'm thankful I don't have any more. Artisan Pure gives a more natural version to this demon creation. Just stay away from this.

2SEXY4THISTOWN

Citrusy! Sexy soft Bubu (insider) fragrance that I love. The orange family is all here. Neroli in here would've been perfect! Too bad it's so weak and don't last long at all; otherwise, I would wear it more! =(

blacktieguy

The opening is a little strong ....Great scent on the dry down....
citrus overload but in a good way.....
definitely a great spring and summer choice.
Unfortunately the performance is very short lived.
If this scent could last more than an hour it would be in my summer top 5.

The Gent

This is a straight up Citrus God fragrance. Since I have gotten older I have tended to not buy citrus colognes like I used to (I know I am weird). I now try to purchase colognes with more musk and ones that are less trendy. With that being said Artisan is an exception.

Artisan is very pleasant and is great for spring/summer. The scent is very sweet but not over powering.

Longevity- the one negative about Artisan is that it does not last long: 2-3 hours tops.

Would I buy again? Yes, I would recommend this for a spring/summer scent.

The Gents score: 9/10 (For the modern Gentlemen).

chinook

Artisan features realistic clementine/tangerine top notes, and a sweet orange blossom dominant floral heart and base. I didn’t get any herbal smell from it. The scent is very pleasant and easy going. I find it very much unisex. Sillage is close to skin.

AlzheimerTV

Batch 7HB2. Bought 75ml for 23 € and I regret it.
Enough with this "body chemistry" farce, those who say it lasts 8 hours just haven't even tried it. You have to spray 10 times to get 30 minutes out of it. Great bottle, though.

I have a decent amount of colognes in my collection but this is my signature scent. i own colognes like bleu de chanel, tom ford neroli portofino, ultra male, bvlgari aqva amara, mugler A*men, perry ellis 360 red, tom ford black orchid and a few others. im not crazy about them but i just bought them as i got into fragrances but after i bought artisan i've pretty much been only wearing this everywhere but do switch it up because i have some others in my collection. when it comes to everyday use in class or wherever this is what i wear. when i first smelled it i knew i wanted it and bought it soon after smelling it. my mum told me its okay and at first my sister wasnt that impressed either. they all said it smells alright but no one said its anything incredible. i started wearing it and the amount of compliments i got with this compared to all my other colognes is insane. i personally am speechless. my mum who said its alright smelled it on me and said thats amazing and i told her what it is and shes in love with it, she told me its better then any other cologne i have. i get insane reactions with this cologne, a friend told me he wants to buy it because its incredible and another friend who hates colognes said he likes it. another dude told me i smell perfect but thats just the dudes, when it comes to the girls im pretty much left speechless. i was wearing it and i always carry it in my bag to freshen up throughout the day. i was wearing it and i had to go to a party so i went there and i freshened up a bit and went to party, i started dancing and sweating like crazy, a friend smelled me and her eyes popped open she was like what is that? and i just smiled at her. she said its really amazing, what is it and her reaction said it all. then a guy friend smelled me and has pretty much the same reaction. the other day i met this new girl who told me it smells amazing and when she met me a few days after that she told my friends that i smell really really good. she loved it. if thats not all, i was testing out prada amber and tom ford grey vetiver cause i wanted to get somthing cleaner, im narrowing down my cologne collection and just wanna stick to what i think is sexy. i was wearing tom ford grey veitver on one wrist and prada amber on the other, i had aqva amara in my bad and also artisan, i forgot to take the amara out of my bag, i had its travel size spray there. i asked the girl that i was with on that day on as to which one smells better and she told me that my artisan smells better then grey vetiver prada amber and aqva amara combined and i was blown away. the amount of compliments i receive on this cologne are insane, absolutely insane. for me this works like a charm, a friend of mine is so jealous of me for wearing this that whenever he smells me hes like artisan again? cause its just that good. when he first smelled me he was like what are you wearing thats amazing and i told him its this. i bought a 125ml bottle of this and i still have some left in it but after getting an amazing reaction from the girls over this and when i say girls i mean a lot of girls i purchased another 125ml bottle and just left it there so that once this finishes i can quickly open that and go to town. i cant love this fragrance more, its my favourite out of everything out there. ive smelled a lot of fragrances but the quality of this juice is way beyond what other designers have to offer. the longevity isnt that great either which is why i carry the bottle in my bag to class and just freshen up after break. it is a heavy scent if smelled too close but its not harsh, you can dig your nose into it and you wouldnt have a problem, no one would especially in my experience. it doesnt really project much either unless its really hot. its perfect for college or any indoor situation, it can work for outdoors as well, i use it all the time. i personally dont wanna be the guy who walks into class and reeks of cologne cause i do have that guy in class and no one appreciates him. im always compared to him but in a good way, they tell him to be more like me and ill take that as a compliment. this cologne has truly done wonders for me and i dont see myself ever not buying this. i spray myself behind each ear and at the back on my neck and maybe 1-2 on my shirt and im good to go for maybe 2 classes and a break which could be anywhere from 4-5.5 hours. so i just freshen up with 2 sprays after that and if im going somewhere after college ill just put 2 more sprays on depending on where im going and it works perfectly for me. id definitely recommend this cologne. you have to give it a try, it works amazingly on my skin and if this works as good on you as it does on me you my friend are in business because everyone is going to love it.

Love.

This is one little eligant sophisticated citrus scent. Very clean and natural and with a quality that exceeds typical designers level.

Soapy, very fresh, aromatic, light with multi dimensional depth. Very masculine yet very soft with the charming florals touch.

Ultra relaxing and refreshing.

Beautiful, very under-priced at discounters. Longevity is poor but it is not meant to be a beast fragrance.

richmilton

I have a lot of John Varvatos fragrances because they make some of the most masculine men's fragrances in a modern way. Artisan is a masculine citrus that is fresh, clean and summery without being another generic freshie... It has it's own uniqueness. I don't get the comparisons to Ferrari Bright Neroli, this is way more manly. My favorite Varvatis is vintage and Rebel as well as the original John Varvatos which has the nicest leather note I ever smelled. But for summer, Artisian is a summer staple.

Note: For those having longer it issues with Varvatos fragrances my suggestion is to spray clothing on each pec and one spray in the collar of your shift.

heskey_1985

Unfortunately, this frag. has like 30 minutes longevity and 5 minutes projection on me, otherwise, it would be my summer signature scent for sure.

Fahylando

Great fragrance for a Summer skin-scent in hot weather. It smells like I'm in a field of orange mangrove trees. I like to think that it purposely doesn't have big sillage because it's meant to be worn in the hot sun, and who wants to have their nose cloyed with fragrance while burning at the same time! Longevity on my skin lasts about 2 or 3 hours. Great smell though and very affordable.

Recommendations, use with Canvas and Concrete Fragrance Primer to increase longevity without the interference of skin chemistry. Or use to Molecule 01 to increase both sillage and longevity.

More recommendations, DONT buy at full price! Smell it that your local department store, then buy it on Walmart.com or Amazon for a super cheap price.

Xzotic Smells

This is a great scent for warm weather. The only down side is the projection. Really cheeses me off!!!!!!!
I now layer this with clinique's happy, both of those together has a very blissful smell and projection and sillage is much better. Try layering it in the clothing it may last a bit longer than becoming a skin scent in about an hour. Great when you've just cleansed yourself and begin the spray down. As always! Try it for yourself, everyone has different DNA!!!

doc_akh

It’s a pleasant soapy citrus floral scent which is masculine. Certainly different from other colognes you’ll find at department stores. A good addition to a collection for its relative uniqueness. I think that’s what draws people towards this cologne. I’d say you have to be kind of a caring and empathetic style of a person to like this. Nothing rugged, tough, elitist or even clubby as the other colognes are on the shelf. I think artisan is the right name. I like to imagine someone wearing this would like gardening or going to nurseries, refurbishing wood, buying organic milk in glass bottles. But that being said I almost get no use out of it since it’s doesnt always express what I’d like to project to the world. Casual days, or business, it doesn’t quite fit somehow. I do find that the more you spray the better it smells.

dhillongary

A very close ( say 95%) resemblance to Ferrari's Bright Neroli. Opens same...twists a bit in the mids...drydown tad drier than BN. low -Moderate projection. Longevity is around 3 hrs in Indian high summer heat of 45-47 degreee celcius. Has a nice fresh aquactic vibe on a freshly squeezed orange mixed with some mild herbs. Good after a shower kinda frag. Disappointed with the longevivty , but that could purely just be the kinda weather & climate i live in! Overall 6/10.

Ryanmmas26

So this seems to be a polarizing scent and I can honestly see why. To me I like this but don’t love its not my favorite from the Artisan line but I do like it !

It opens up with a very orangey, bright citrusy smell that will smell like a cleaner of some sorts but once it dries down that does go away and it starts to mellow out and get more floral with the jasmine and orange blossom. I do like the dry down better than the opening but as it dries down it tends to lean slightly feminine. My girlfriend did not like this as she said it smelled girly but it wasn’t horrible but again not something that she would want me to wear.

Performance on me though is great and actually the best of the artisan line. I get 6-8 hours with very good projection.

Overall rating— 6.5 our of 10 ! Decent scent but it’s not going to be 1 of my go it’s in my warm weather rotation.

Give John Varvatos and the master perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux full credit, their fragrances are authentic, highly innovative, unique, and fun to experience. Artisan is all of those things, amplified.

One quick hit of this juice, and the thesis statement of this fragrance is clear: fresh oranges on a warm summer day. That's an understatement, really, because this juice is ripe with Sicilian clementines, tangelos, mandarins, orange blossoms, and orange-jasmine fusions.

The beautiful thing is how genuine and real it smells. Dig your fingernail into the rind of a clementine or a mandarin and peel it back, watching the little juice spray that follows. That's the moment captured in these notes. It is a bright, cool, fine mist, and the underlying ginger note only serves to make it more pungent and present.

Later, there will be some warm wood and amber, some musk to give it all depth, but those fresh orange accords never disappear.

This is also probably the one John Varvatos release that actually has some good longevity, at least, for a Varvatos. I get 5-6 hours out of it.

For me, this is an all-time favorite from this house.

fraglawyer

John Varvatos Artisan is a very nice spring and summer scent. Though neroli is not listed as a note, very noticeable neroli note at the top. In fact, JVA smells a lot like Ferrari's Bright Neroli.

Smell 8/10
Longevity 5/10
Sillage 6/10

KennethBackaert

A fantastic scent, but the performance is terrible!

Erinbath22

Orange rind, orange blossom, fresh crushed herbs explosion! If you don't love orange blossom, beware. You will smell like you have been picking oranges, peeling oranges, and squeezing their little blossoms then rubbing them all over.
For two hours.
Then a nice fresh woodsy, herbal orange scent will linger on your clothes for another hour.
Are you all in for a really gorgeous 3- hour orange tree ride? Then get Artisan. Also has a really neat woven bottle. I love it. Used at my house as aromatherapy for pain and low moods.

stephen.r

This stuff is seriously fresh and invigorating. Think lemon-orange kitchen cleaner. Maybe a slight light sandalwood give it some smoothness and body, but this is a pretty transparent scent. I get most of the notes, but orange and orange blossom overpowers the rest.

Its light, without much scent trail, but I am surprised how long it lasts when you spray a concentrated blast in one area.

It really is quite wonderful and uplifting, but weak on projection.

Oldspice

My original JV Artisan review was not positive. I tried it from a decant and all I remember smelling was soft, yet harsh orange. Orange as in a kitchen cleaner.

I've been getting back into Varvatos scents so I tried it again and got a bottle this time. It smells very different than I recall. Orange blossom is very prominent with tangerine and ginger woven in. It's a cheerful, clean scent.

My wife likes this scent on me though she says it smells a little feminine.

It has adequate lasting power for me though projection is on the lighter side. Not always bad for a warm weather scent.

The bottle is great, would be interesting to see how it's made.

Wooster97

So many perfumes have a target market and age group etc but I don't agree with it ,if you like it and it makes you feel good ,then it doesn't matter what age you are !

joseffgabriel

I really hated this one when im trying to find sweet night perfume (seasonal taste). Then after owning too many night perfumes I went back to this one. I have tried several fresh perfumes from designer to niche. Aqua Universalis, Aqua Celestia, Bond No. 9 Wall street, Scent of peace. and all of Creed and Penhaligon, ELDO, Atelier frehest colognes etc. This one I liked the most especially the dry down. There is this feeling to it that I didnt like it at first but I longed so much for it every time I remember the unique bottle so I went back to designers perfume.
Better Summer vibe than cheap synthetic Versace Pour Homme. Versace Pour Homme is so synthetic and chemically there is a sharp ammonia like sting in your nose at the first spray. But this one is better. It smells like a long haired surfer 18-25 yr old guy walking on the beach wearing white long sleeves, denim shorts and slippers then he nestles in a Weaved Hammock or "Duyan" full of white flowers then naps. Much like this perfume it will smell like hot beach summery vibe then dries down to a beautiful white floral and herbs. I have figured out that here in fragrantica most loved perfumes isnt really easy to wear too dark or too exotic but most liked perfumes are the versatile ones and is easy to wear.
This goes deep into my skin and still goes strong even after 8 hrs.

Somehow unisex. Ive smelled Ateliers unisex freshies more masculine than this. Trefle Pur and Bois Blond.

I really get the beautiful woody feel of freshly woven palm leaves in the drydown

JScott1

Wonderful scent! Clean and unique. Unfortunately it evaporates in nanoseconds so few can tell how good it is. As long as you don't intend on people noticing your fragrance, this is a great one.

allwritey

Among designer fragrances, this scent is refreshing and strikes a very good balance between being familiar yet fresh. I think it shares some notes with Cool Water but comes across as more citrusy and floral.

Weak longevity and sillage. Therefore not overpowering and dries down to a gentle skin scent. Requires more frequent sprays throughout the day. Perfect for warm weather. Juicy and very likeable.

iwhiffwaft

Yeah. I'm just super glad I didn't pay full retail on this bad boy. I mean at the big high end retailers this thing is still going for 80-89 bucks. I'm not upset because I think I grabbed this for 25-30. Even at that, it's a bit over-priced for what I'm getting.

As for the scent, I love it. Most Designer stuff is mass market friendly and is certainly trying to get the most appeal to the widest audience. The John Varvatos line is kind of the bad boy of designer's, maybe. They have the mass market appeal, with a slight alternative to the mainstream twist. Not so much as to be in Niche territory, but they are on the outskirts of convention amongst the conventional. Perhaps, that's why I like this line.

The Artisan fragrance is really great. It would be a ten based on fragrance alone compared to a vast array of great citruses that I own. The only issue is a big one though. It really doesn't last very long fellas. This longevity is poor. Poor poor. It's Jimmy Choo Man poor.

The only other Varvatos frag I have is the original and its the same, just poor. I can't really recommend this stuff because of the fact it just dies so fast. The only thing that is kind of cool is that I know I'll need to change my fragrance because it will be gone, and I have so many great others to choose from. Sample wear this one guys for yourself before getting it. I love the top 10 smell and the branding of Varvatos, but if you want to smell good all day, you want at least average performance to get some money's worth, and this just doesn't provide that for me.

mopinto

Brilliant composition. The best scent i have tried so far. Definitely for summer time. Very fresh, very well balanced. I m very finicky regarding colognes. This one would be coronated the #1 on my list if wasn't the poor longevity. I am talking 1 hour tops on skin, and perhaps 2 hours on cloth / hair. I hope a reformulation is on the works, and the poor longevity will be addressed... only then it will be considered my signature cologne.

lespritz.1

Nothing close to Clinique Happy. Smells like a floral play-doh IMO. Off-putting!

Romain shk

lot of hate here and i know because of poor performance and i agree but i m still loving it and bought the 7th bottle 125ml today as this is a compliment magnet for me in summers , it lasts like 4 to 5 hours on me with 10sprays and i m ok with it. This one is excellent for dates, girls love that fresh orange smell and it works really romantic in summer day dates.I have done all experiments with it , i even got 10plus hours longevity but i sprayed like 15 sprays , outta which 9 were on clothes and i am ok with it, as with D&G The One i sprayed 15 and 6 hours later it vanished... This one is weak but not as weak as portrayed ... Better performer then Cliniq Happy... Just go really lose on trigger..

Toogle

Great citrus-floral juice.
Fresh, Non-synthetic,balanced perfect for spring and summer.
BUT sillage and longevity is disaster. 1-1,5 hour on my skin.
We are using Lemon cologne too much at Turkey ( i mean like hand Sterilizer ) and i'm a fan of lemon cologne but bealieve me this juice's sillage and longevity like Good quality lemon cologne. :(

Scent 9/10
longevity 2/10
Sillage 3/10

robertgall

terrible..! goth it as a present........

doniking

very nice smell with bad performance. not worth the price. too bad.

heltorn

I just could wish the better longevity, as most of guys who like the smell.
The top is mandarin/lemon but it dries down to musk, woody and sea-salt base which is amazing but.. it quits too fast.
One of the best thing about this perfume is that it doesn't smell like other "headliners" and seems very individual choice.

lee99

Smells like laundry detergent - Yuk!! I really don't like this one.

tintin19

Tried this based on the generally positive reviews. Was about to blind buy it but grabbed the tester instead - thank goodness!! All I get is laundry powder :-(. Clean and fresh like my clothes - but they have been rinsed as well! Don't like it at all. Feel like I need a rinse cycle!! To top it off the skin I sprayed it on feels slightly itchy.

MichelVaillant

Well, if you need to hear it one more time, this is a great herbal citrus fragrance with terrible performance. I find its herbal aspect to be as prominent as its citrus aspect. It is quite pleasant during the few (couple?) hours it lasts, but ultimately not extra satisfying due to poor performance. I see it as a missed opportunity, because it could have been great with better projection and longevity.

darrendesignworld

Very soft smell it's a lovely smell soft smells like clementine lasts very short period of time and projects very low very sad about because the smell isn't bad.

bielaurance

I love the smell especially the top notes..but unfortunately the longevity was so poor..lasting for 2-3 hours only...

DannyJayJay

Wearing this as i'm writing this review and as others reviewers have pointed out before me it has below average longevity or worse, but it's a great clean citrus scent. I wished the projection was a little bit heavier cause i don't like to overspray, but with this one you're more or less forced to if you want people to notice what you're wearing. Too bad, cause i really like this one.

Scent: 8/10
Projection 5/10
Longevity: 4/10

jason.elliott

I've tried this several times over the past few months from perfume counter testers and free sample vials, and, like all Varvatos scents, I truly enjoyed it, but felt the longevity was a bit poor and required overspraying.

Yesterday, I purchased a 3-pack of .57oz Varvatos Artisan series travel coffrets for $20 at Marshalls (retail is around $50, but the box was damaged and opened yet the 3 sprayers were completely full). It contained Artisan, Artisan Black, and Artisan Acqua (the latter I already own in full size, and is my signature summer scent, poor longevity be damned!). I was happy with the purchase, mostly because the sprayers are refillable and high quality, producing proper spray concentrations similar to a real bottle, unlike most other small travel sprayers I've purchased.

So this morning I decided to give O.G. Artisan a proper test-drive on my skin. Based on my poor longevity/sillage experiences at counters and with samples, I decided to heavily overspray. Three to the neck, three to the chest in hopes of it sticking to the hair, two to each forearm (again, a hair-sticking attempt), and one on each wrist for pulse-point activity. It came on STRONG. Passing my girlfriend a couple minutes later while getting dressed, she sneezed several times. The top notes are POWERFUL, citric, fresh and delicious.

But it seems to be almost entirely a top-note-only experience. Or it possibly cycles through the top, heart and drydown in an incredibly short period of time. Forty minutes later, in the car on the way to work, it was as if I hadn't oversprayed at all. My girlfriend is highly sensitive to smell, and she often comments that I'm wearing too much of something (or that she likes or doesn't like it), but she had no comments. I sniffed my arms and smelled absolutely nothing. Most Varvatos scents, while soft in silage and expressing moderate to weak longevity, still leave a decent skin scent on my arms, but this one had left behind nothing. Perhaps the strength of the opening top-note salvo had dulled my sense of smell, but I felt I should have been able to detect something.

I'm at work now, roughly two hours after applying this juice. I am occasionally catching soft whiffs of citric floral and woodsy drydown. I assume they're coming from my chest through the open top button on my shirt, because when I sniff my arms, there's nothing there. Since the travel spray is in my bag, I will re-apply in small doses a couple times throughout the day to see if that helps.

Ultimately, this is a delicious olfactory concoction, like most Varvatos scents. But it seems to be the worst in regard to longevity, being almost entirely a top-note-only experience on my combination skin in today's excessive heat and high humidity. But then there's that whiff again, which is still highly enjoyable.

Overspraying will help in the long run, but it will assault the nose when applied. This is a great scent, but be warned: the longevity is perhaps the worst I have ever experienced. I love Varvatos' scents and this is no exception, but buyer beware of the longevity shortcomings. Artisan Acqua lasts longer (while having very little in common with the scent in this juice; flanker status in name only) and Acqua leaves a delicious long-lasting skin scent. My very few experiences with Artisan Black suggest that it has much more staying power than O.G. Artisan, and actually retains much of the original scent to qualify as a true flanker.

I love the nose behind Varvatos' scents, but re-applying throughout the day or night is almost always necessary (which is why I'm happy with my $20 worth of three attractive, refillable, and perfectly functional travel sprayers). I doubt I will ever buy a bottle of Artisan, because Acqua and Black are far superior, but it is a lovely spring/summer scent.

zcsmith78

Decent citrus scent, I've smelled better and I've smelled worse. Very casual and ideal for a very hot, Summer day. Just like all the Varvatos scents, it suffers from poor longevity on my skin, even with six sprays. If you can find it on a discount site and starting your collection, it's worth a look. Otherwise, sample and see if you like before you determine if you want to buy.

prodigi

I first saw this when I was browsing the duty-free shops at the airport in Bangkok while waiting for my flight home. The rattan wrapped bottle with the pitted metal cap just somehow caught my eye. Expecting a heavy, musky scent, I was surprised at the fresh citrus topnotes that leapt out at me when I tried a spray or two on my wrist.

I didn't buy it there even though I liked it as I don't make a habit of buying frags on impulse. There have been instances that I bought a frag on impulse and ended up giving it away or throwing it in the trash.

In the next few days, the scent of it lingered in my mind and I ended up hunting for a bottle of it at the local shops and i've now been using it for close to a year now.

On me, the opening notes of citrus jump out- grapefruit and subtle tinges of pomelo and even a whiff of yuzu. This mellows down to a light, clean lavender with a spicy hint of ginger. The drydown reveals lightly musky wood tones that are pleasant and masculine.

This is an often overlooked gem due to it's extremely weak projection and longevity, but if you look hard enough, the complexity of this frag somewhat makes up for the weaknesses.

Not for everyone, but a great frag for guys who are confident enough to get up close and allow this scent to shine through.

Toogle

What can i say
Poor longevity
Soft sillage
Great citrus scent :(

JeffB

I love this fragrance. The citrus just smells so clean and invigorating. It reminds me of sipping rum punch on a beach in Barbados. I think of it as a casual scent, playful. Like others have said, it just doesn't last very long but that's okay for me as I don't want to smell myself all day long. I think it fades away gracefully. I have tried the other Varvatos colognes and this is my favorite, by far. I love it.

asimfarrukh

It dries down to a detergent note which is kinda smell good! Overall a nice fragrance!!

Houdini4

Well I've finally sampled John Varvartos fragrances and superficially I've been very satisfied with them. I say that because across the board they open fantastically then just disappoint massively as they drydown.
Unfortunately It's the same story with Varvatos Artisan but maybe to a slightly lesser degree.
The opening is a sweet juicy clementine which is very accurate and is obviously floating on a base of woody notes and a fizzy, green note of galbanum. This is all very nice but then starts to retreat from this fresh and natural scent into something slightly more white floral, orange blossom and a hint of ginger. That's all in the first 20 mins or so and I'm thinking Artisan is a bit of a winner. Then it seems to change into a bit of a sour car crash after the orange/tangerine note subsides.
Tomato leaf is what I get on my skin...yep...a greeny, slightly metallic note and that mixed with a white floral that plainly, just isn't very nice and certainly a contrast from the lovely opening.
Performance is pretty poor (lasting 2 hours if that?) but this fragrance is interesting and the opening is very nice so just for that I give JV Artisan a thumbs up.

Rerik

I like this perfume, the tangerine has a cloying sweetness.
Orange blossom and mandarin add more cloying to the structure so we get the same smell as with Dunhill Icon, something glue like.

pg1864

Guess my husband just has excellent body chemistry because this one REALLY projects and lasts on him. He got a minimum of 8 hours wear on his skin! I love how fresh and citrusy this smells :) Reminded me of Versace eau fraiche in the air. The bottle is bomb. Yet another winner for the John Varvatos line. Will keep this one in his cache at home for sure!

AtticusFinch

Tried this one out...The citrus opening had potential at first, but afterward it sort of like something else was getting in the way. It didn't last long compared to other frags.

JJTANTANY

Very fresh, very clean. A very uplifting all-year-round fragrance. But longevity doesn't come up to my expectation. It vanishes too quickly. Scent itself is wonderful. I love it...!

CharlieCologne

Surprisigly this last on my skin 6 -8 Hours. Projection could have been better though. But for the price and smell I wouldn't complain.

goshetoo

The smell is nice, very fresh and clean, but the longevity is awful, really AWFUL... I have to spray like 6-7 sprays... I regret buying it. :)

PS: The design of the bottle though is superb. Well done!!! :)

Úrbez larres.lardies

A fresh and quite nice citrus smell , but I think in this style there are better ( Bvlgari Aqua for example) water smells a little generic colony. The best is undoubtedly the rustic design of the bottle.

Really reminds me of sliced fresh oranges in wicker basket., metaphorically! Preety realistic, refreshing and pleasant frag. The scent doesn't change to much on my skin. It opens up fresh and citrusy until it fades quickly almost after 3 hours or so. Interesting frag apart from the longevity.

marinello

Tangerine and orange blossom, very fresh and summer only fragrance. the strenght? It's a cologne to be honest dunno how they could pass it for eau de toillete(?!)You have to reapply it few times a day, all over, literally! If you can get a cheap tester online go for it but don't buy the full priced, just not worth it.

greatbitch

young boys wear white clean shirts.....so pure~~~

Artesano es una fragancia para usar un día soleado..
es fresco y agradable me aporta vivacidad cuando el día a sido agotador
es un aroma común pero encantador, tiene buena longevidad.

So fruity..and linear.

Fresh but attractive scent, not very long lasting, a good choice for casual situation. 8/10

This is the best male perfume in Korea. we are friendly with mandarin instead of orange and lemon . I think That's why this perfume is so famous in my country. bad sillage and longevity but pretty good scent overall.

eliweisz

A lovely scent, warm and friendly - but very weak. After a tart opening it quickly settles down close to the skin - and disappears before you can enjoy its musky drydown. Probably it would be wiser to purchase a modern rendition of classic EDCs (for example, 4711 Mandarin and Cardamom) and get very much the same vibe with more projection and longevity for less money. Lovely as it is, Artisan is too soft to grab a place in my wardrobe.

kimberly.kelly.750

I love this fragrance. I am female but I might get it for myself.

Yaniv84

Not a standard citrus scent, reminds me of a tangerine. A very nice spring/summer cologne to wear during day time.
Now on personal note: Very disappointing!!! because of the longevity...POOR is an understatement! I sprayed it like a deodorant and still it lasts only for 15-30 minutes tops! most unfortunate.
Definitely won't buy it again.

dmirror

Surprisingly this fragrance lasts on me I read some of the reviews on here saying that it's weak poor longevity not the case with me I've worn it a few times now and I've been getting at least 6hrs to 7hrs on it that's about average or slightly better for a summer scent meaning its actually supposed to be light and airy not to choke people out especially if your in humid hot weather and this smells nothing like cool water not even close if I would say any other fragrance it resembles I'd probably say its kind of curve-ish it has kind of got that fresh cut grass vibe with musk and citrus very clean I got a few compliments wearing this from coworkers and my girl too its funny cause she wasn't to fond of it at first I let her smell this scent a couple of times and she thought it was just OK then when I actually wore it she was amazed by it she thought it was great meaning this is a scent that you got to test out on your skin not the paper card anyhow great spring/summer scent on paper it smells plain or boring but when you wear it on sunny hot days its a great manly scent this gets 8/10 the black is good too

The stuff smells great, I don't think anyone can argue that. It's juicy, light, fresh; nothing but pleasant. It has almost no sillage and poor longevity however, to a point where it's barely worth putting on your body. The price is fair enough though, so either load up every pulse point along with your clothes, or use it as a high-class air freshener.

Oh dear, as beautiful as this is, it doesn't last. How sad! I've hear it's the curse of John Varvatos fragrances. It opens with a bright burst of citrus on the skin that takes over the whole room. It's a mixture of oranges and orange blossom, which smells glorious even for somebody who doesn't like citrus. (I don't like lime and lemon in fragrances.) It then transitions into spicy woods. Sharp yet soft and comforting - it's a weird combination - perhaps because it doesn't project anymore like when it started out. 2-ish hours in and all I can smell is soft soft amber. About 3 hours and poof, gone! What smelled initially like a club/night-out scent turned into a semi-formal or date scent. And it's gone before it could serve a function. This is not a fragrance you wanna reapply coz it changes and, because it changes over a short period of time, the change is dramatic. Bottom line: it doesn't serve a purpose. Maybe if you layer it with an unscented lotion it'll stay longer, but is it worth bothering? I don't know. I'm not going to. I'm glad I only tested this out and not blind-bought it.

The opening ia great. After this, smells like cloth softener on my skin, unfortunatelly.

Oposai

This smells exactly like spongebob cologne haha no kidding. I was really surprised how close they are. The scent is just ok.

gerry.madoni

You may love it or hate it, but you will not feel indifferent. This oft used statement applies perfectly to JV Artisan. I would safely say those who dislike it are just a little peeved with the oh so subtle projection and questionable longevity. If the folks at JV had gotten around these two issues, then we would have a veritable classic in our midst. So, what remains is more than mediocre , it is just a letdown.

I usually like the work Flores-Roux, but Artisan is one that was left too unfinished to safely release onto the public.

What I find interesting about this fragrance is the constant wonderment at how does this stuff last for such a short time. Never boring is Artisan. But I will pass on this one.

3/10........blind buy and then cry

happyscent

John Varvatos Artisan - another citrus-orange fragrance, I like this since it is a good interpretation of an overdone fragrance combination, fleeting but I have no qualms on reapplication of fragrances throughout the day

kaysee

I love it. deffo a spring/summer fragrance. Clementines and flowers. Wanted to buy it, but after testing it realised that sillage/longevity aren't that great so I'll skip that one.

P.S. for some reason reminds me of Versace Dreamer, although they're completely different. but kinda like in a softer version? maybe the drydown? anyone? no? :P

Agree with Jeff P

"Artisan projects for me about as long as it takes to put the cap back on the bottle. the smell is nice enough, but so very weak. "

bwcw81

Fresh and summery scent, longevity is weak, projection is subtle, stay closed to skin. If you like Azzraro Chrome, this is 90% similar. The only highlight is the woven rattan bottle design, very nice to hold and piece of art, too bad, not the juice, too simple, too plain and yet too common.

MyFairLady

First I liked this one as a fresh summery fragrance for men. But after some time (less than an hour), I find orange and tangerine too dominant. Overall quite pleasant scent.

Jeff P

Got this as part of the "try it" set at Macy's. Artisan projects for me about as long as it takes to put the cap back on the bottle. the smell is nice enough, but so very weak. To prove a point, I asked my wife to smell my arm to see if she liked it, and she said it smelled like Chanel Bleu. I agreed. Then I told her that I had applied the Artisan on top of the Chanel I had worn from the day before and STILL the Chanel could be smelled thru the Artisan in less than 1 hour. Your milage may vary.

RockFromUpt

Loved it until recently learning of musk contents(which I never prefer).Animal-Friendly for the continuity of me.

muffinman

Worst purchase ever... Completely agree with the consensus on longevity, which is about 30min. Moreover, it smells very similar to 4711. However, 4711 lasts longer than Artisan.
