Oh my… the frontline of this one is like going to war, it tried to assault me badly. At “war” as it brings dark images of gunpowder, charred ground and something sickly medicinal. But I knew what I’m in for since I first tried it on a blotter so I didn’t scrub it off… as I would’ve otherwise. But the dry down is so worth it. I’m unsure still if it’s a fb worthy because I really cannot stand the initial blast, but gladly it’s rather short one. Yet to see the overall longevity but it’s definitely a polarizing scent. I cannot imagine a scenario where a person likes both parts it’s either this or that as being SO. DIFFERENT.

mothbodied

As many have said, the dry down is so so beautiful. The opening is very smoky, in sort of a charred, campfire way, (which I personally love) but after a few hours it fades into an incredible woody incense note that also strikes me as sort of leathery. I'm not sure I get the melon note, but there is definitely something bright and fruity that cuts through the darkness like a breath of fresh air.

i have a little solid/wax version of this that i put on my wrists when i need an extra calm vibe :-) feels like clean cold mountain air. i just wish the pure smoke note lasted longer, on me it becomes more and more floral with wear.

I'd always had Lush down as making candy sweet or earthy raw fragrances, and I was through years of experience wedded to just 2 of their lines, Karma (soap, shower gel and fragrance) and more recently Lord of Misrule (fragrance)
All this changed rather when I was waiting for my wife and I tried BOG - Sweet Jesus, I immediately regretted the 2 squirts of application. Why in the name of all things holy, has Lush recreated a potpourri roll up and put it in a bottle?
Given that I was in a shopping centre and going to fully wash it off would have been a hassle I just left it, and the strangest thing happened. As the day wore on, I found myself catching whiffs of my arm as the fragrance went into dry down and it wasn't anywhere near as offensive! By the time I got home that evening, I had almost started to quite like it. Well fast forward a year or so and several more applications and I have bought a bottle. It was for a steal on ebay - and I do quite enjoy it on occasion now. It's unique (certainly at this pricepoint) challenging, rewarding and I still have a sort of love/hate relationship with BOG - but I'm glad to have a bottle in my drawer all the same :)

This was my entry point into the world of perfumery. It starts like a church incense smoke bomb, which makes you question your choices. however, this phase is - though pungent - rather short.

The heart, and the drydown however... they are sweet, exotic, but also like coming home to a warm, up sunny house to meditate. And they last... well, forever.

Turns out that this was the exact intent of the maker - it is a mix of two perfumes inspired by buddhist temples in east asia, and it was supposed to be a journey to the center of the temple. And yeah, well, it feels exactly like that.

Most people don't like it up close, especially the opening, but the drydown made many a lady compliment me with their mouth watering (mind you - i'm a very average looking woman).

I prefer the solid over the liquid, as this majestic transformation is much more pronounced, and the drydown notes are much more beautiful and longer lasting (up to the second day). I used to have the solid first, and God, it was a love.

Later on, i bought the liquid, and this perfume has aged now - as have i - and my bottle is more than 6 years old. It never went rancid (or sour), but has lost a bit of smoke and settled more into an old papyrus vibe with sweet undertones, sortof an old book smell, if you will.

I don't think I'll ever be able to forget this perfume, as it was my signature (of sorts) for most of my late teens and early twenties, when i wanted to rebel and be myself, rather than the candy bomb that seems to be associated with perfumes from younger women nowadays. I wanted to be a temple, a layered creature, and so i was.

Anyway, get the solid. It's an amazing art of perfume at this price.

Duxie257

Smoky, herbal Diorella.

G0rebloom

One of my favorites from lush. It smells blue but without any marine notes. Cold but spicy, really moody. It is a little masculine but not in that eating-ice-and-glass-punch-a-tree kind of way a lot of male oriented scents are.

joshuacs

It kind of smells like henna...take that how you will

Nocciola23

This is a very intense, incense meets damp moss scent.
I quite like incense when paired with vanilla or amber, but when added to green/mossy notes I find that it becomes very sharp and medicinal which is what this perfume offers.
I can appreciate it, but it's not a scent for me and I don't think it would be a good blind buy.

marvina

I own this perfume since it's launching. The quality changed a but unfortunately not in the good direction. It used to be more rich when it was branded under the Gorilla Perfumes series. Still very unique but more sharp and less warm and the spicy side feels more masculine.

pittam

Too intense and smokey, gave me headaches every time

katxoxo

This smells like that specific weather you get in the uk at like 4pm in the winter when it’s overcast and there’s wind and wet leaves in the air. More specifically you are just exiting a church . There’s like a biting freshness, and an earthiness and like a haunting quality to it. Also i can kind of imagine that this is what Wednesday Addams would smell like

an_baum

(solid perfume review)
intense & moody is absolutely right- but not really sad, more like clear-headed, overly so. overwhelmed by just being alive lol. it reminds me of a quiet morning after a campfire revelry the night before. alone by the lake in clothes you've worn for 3 days while waiting for everyone else to wake up, rolling up smoke-infused sleeping bags and silently picking up crushed cans of rainier. as you drive down the mountain towards home the light comes out behind the clouds and the day sweetens, getting warmer and stickier (that subtle melon note in the drydown)

CassidySmells

Musky, smoky and somehow fresh, like petrichor. It's complex but still quite accessible. Nothing else quite like it.

liquidsword

Very unusual fragrance.
When I first smell this on paper strip, it is wayyy to much and cough inducing. Like ashtray, beans, and the cooling effect of mint.
Around 30 minutes in, when the smokiness has calmed down a bit, it smells like wood that was submerged in the sea for years and then dried + ashtray + herb/ vegetal notes + freshness and sweetness of melon. It's complex and I definitely need to explore it more

FallenLeaf

There is something about this one that just keeps luring you back in. You can't decide if you like, love or hate it, but it will keep playing tricks on you to seduce you with its different notes.

When you eventually decide you do actually love it, don't over spray!

After having had a few months break from BoG & then receiving my 100ml bottle in the post, (bargain from Vinted!), I excitedly did just that & it went up my nose & down my throat, totally ruining the experience for myself.

Over spraying also intensified the smokiness of it on me which I put up with whilst going for a walk in the woods but had to wash off when I got home.

I still love BoG & something in it reminds me so much of my late father, which I find very comforting depending on when I smell it. At other times it can make me feel sad.

Sometimes, even when I don't want to wear it, I get the urge to take a deep sniff from my tin of the solid version & it's just enough to satisfy my craving, uplifting & calming me at the same time.

I will always have at least a solid version of this because it really is quite a unique & special fragrance.

Update 16/01/24:
Cannot bear the spray anymore since having COVID in October! :(
Can tolerate the solid, but in small doses.

qianqian

Tried again and went from love to dislike... cannot explain it. Too smoky and syntheticly sweet.

isha2003

This was a blind buy for me, I bought it cause of the reviews. I am so disappointed, cause off the description everyone said it smelt like the mountains and incense, as a person whose been to Tibet and smells incense everyday, this did not match up to my scent memory. This smells like a middle aged guy who smokes 40 cigs a day and works at the car wash and has a strepsil in their mouth. A overly powerful smoky scent, which does not smell like incense but cigarettes, I hate cigarette smell. So I’m never gonna use this perfume, nothing in this perfume replicates the smell of incense, it’s got this acidic soapy scent to it, best described as the soap my dad uses for his car wash. And we all know what strepsils smell like, so that is what hits the nose towards the end. It’s very unpleasant, I wouldn’t imagine this scent on a female anyone in general. I don’t think you can get compliments with this one on, more like people would avoid you cause it’s smells bad 😭😭😭

jhindsb

I’m an absolute sucker for a smoky woody vetiver-heavy fragrance and I mean….wow…..they really outdid themselves with this one. What a treasure this is. I gave this to my boyfriend and it’s now his signature scent but I’m really wishing it was mine lol. It’s a polarizing scent indeed but you have to admit, it’s quite a masterpiece. The melon is SUCH an unexpected note; with such an intense and moody profile it shouldn’t work, but it really rounds everything out flawlessly. If you want a very special and transportive unisex fragrance, Breath of God is it.

qianqian

It's a well balanced woody patchouli vanilla. It has an intimidating name, but the scent is gentle and elegant.

Brightside89

Confirmation, as if we needed it, that God smokes 40 a day.

The roar of smoke in the opening is off putting to a lot of people but I find it calming, which is unsurprising given how often I use a cigarette as a way to self soothe. BoG is one of my favourite 'weirdo' scents that I wear when I'm not trying to please anyone but me, and even I wouldn't wear it to the office for fear of someone thinking I had been chewing on a nicotine patch.

Once the initial smokey carnage dries down you're left with notes of burnt incense, sparkly citrus/melon and uplifting neroli, none of which should go together as well as these do. The end effect is of a silent, deserted, cool temple where you can seek respite from the heat and noise of the rest of the world. It's meditative and introspective and supremely complex, and for all its weirdness I find myself drawn to it almost constantly.

TIBE

Tested this in-store today and it smelt like ashes and melted plastic it also gave me a headache.

pandasniffs

smells a bit like cigarettes and Aperol but in the best way possible

aoelke

Smells like barbecue sauce

Crylittle83

Breath of God smells like a July summer day in New York during afternoon rush hour.

ChezdeParfums

Few perfumes in my collection could be labeled as completely unpredictable, but Breath of God is one of them. From one minute to the next it is a completely new vignette. Church. A smokey bar. Ham. Heaven. And back to Church. This takes woody-fruity-floral to every extremely possible (is that ham again?). It is a lot of fun, but don’t expect to know what might happen when you wear it.

MamaLuvs

Such a gem. So unique and special. It has a very sharp opening but once it mellows it's nothing short of enchanting. It's definitely my signature scent. To me it evokes a sexy bohemian person in a leather jacket in a herb garden after the rain. Lush better keep this one around forever.

SaraSeven

A wonderful, complex, and sexy unisex fragrance. Truly the breath of god. If I smell this on a man, I go feral. 10/10

Amber Plokchouli

@NathaliePee: tobacco as a note doesn’t smell smokey at all. Tobacco is now a warm herbal smell; the smell of dry tobacco/tobacco leaves NOT smoke. It can smell like opening a pouch of tobacco, or smelling a cigar (before it’s lit, the cigar itself) it can even smell like rubbing fresh tobacco leaves between your fingers, but it will never smell like smoke, because that simply isn’t what tobacco smells like. Smoke smell is mainly incense and sometimes leather notes can be perceived as smoke. Incense is listed here and that’s what makes this fragrance Smokey.

On to my review:
I hadn’t worn this in a while so I forgot how absolutely amazing this is. I’m trying to go easy on my bottle because I only have a 30ml one and it’s now way more expensive than when I bought it, but DANG! This genuinely is the breath of god! It’s just THAT good!

Let me start by saying that this fragrance is NOT a safe blind buy at all. It doesn’t smell good on everyone. My skin really brings forward the sweet notes, making it a delicious blend of sweet and smokey, but depending on ones skin either can be overpowering and especially with just the dark smokey smells it can smell very harsh.

This is a very well blended fragrance. I don’t really pick up individual notes except for the incense. There’s something almost menthol like in the sweet notes, making it feel like your lungs open up more when you inhale. Sometimes from a distance I pick up the juniper with a hint of lemon (which is also a bit that can make this smell horrible if it’s pronounced strongly on your skin, because it’s kinda sharp).

This fragrance Is definitely unisex and also unique amongst both male and female perfumes. I’ve never smelled anything that even remotely resembles it. It is gorgeous and special. To me as a woman the is the ULTIMATE boss lady fragrance. It DEMANDS attention. She’s so confident and powerful in her suit with pointy shoulder pads. There’s no bull$h!tting this lady. She’s mesmerising and magnetising. There’s sweetness and softness despite her power. She’s gentle when she needs to, but oh so powerful. She’s not everyone’s cup of tea, she’s no girl next door, she is.. the kind of woman that can and will rule the world.

Wait a few minutes after spraying to smell this, the first whiff isn’t very pleasant, but the sweetness comes forward after about a minute.

jellisunc

Tried this one on today and was surprised how smokey the opening was - in a good way! I kept sniffing my wrist as it dried down into a woody vetiver that almost feels like patchouli at times. This stuff is seriously good and now I want a small bottle (noooo lol)!

Edit: Got a bottle, could not quit smelling my jacket today. Super pumped to add this!

Lidell

Starts like industrial burnt rubber with melancholic morning dew (maybe watching a fresh sunrise through tears?), then settles as the generic Lush shop scent that is on fire.
Edgy and perfect in its own way, a love for me.

gory-rilmore

I bought this scent in the solid version during a hippie phase that involved a lot of camping, incense, and not wanting to smell too "pretty." So, it makes a lot of sense that the Lush associate didn't have a hard time talking me in to this one.

It's unisex (maybe slightly male). As a whole, it sits in this interesting place where it's definitely woody (the sandalwood is very pronounced to me at first whiff), but not really *earthy*. The zing of citrus, the aromatics, the pepper, and the incense lift the woody notes into something a little more airy and meditative. It feels like a very deep scent that you can get lost in (and it's a long-wearing scent, so you definitely have the time to get lost).

I don't wear this scent anymore, but it does hold a little place in my heart. Whenever I smell it I'm transported back to that year I wore it. These days, I would consider something similar with a slightly softer, perhaps more feminine profile.

ursulaburns

My favourite autumn perfume is Lush "breath of god" it has this deep spice and an undercurrent whiff of medicinal bandages. It makes me gasp and breathe deeper. A pungent lusty stench. It pretends to be devine, but you detect trouble in paradise. Like someone earthy, farted in heaven. The imperfectness of it. I keep going back for more and trying to understand why I like it. It suits the way i feel about the world we live in. The conflict. I breathe deep and step out in a flurry of autumn leaves.........Damn that smells good! Ursula Burns Music

marrrr

Just wondering if this one smells like inside of Lush stores... 🤔 I'd really want it if it does. (Lush shops were closed in my country several years ago 😪 so i cant test it out)

Sammbac

Blind bought the solid version of this based on rave reviews on the Lush website. I'm not being fussy or dramatic when I say this literally made me gag and heave and I actually threw it away it was so bad. The leather. It reminded me of carsick journeys as a child.

austincooner

take note, reviewing the solid perfume.

absolutely love it. this thing has personality. incredibly versatile, all occasion all season fragrance. I pick up camphor in addition to the other notes which are strong on incense, melon, and vetiver. not a strong projection but 4-6 hours longevity. waffling between this and fin du monde for my signature. will be interesting to re-review when I splurge for the liquid.

10/10

applesnaxofficial

got a sample of this in a lush perfume discovery set that i bought specifically for other perfumes in the set. this one was absolutely my least favourite in the set when i first got it (in fact i actively disliked it), but over the course of a few months it has become my favourite and even something of a signature scent. it's so wonderfully grassy and woody and sharp. the very first time i wore it i was only brave enough to spray it in the air and walk through it bc it's so strong and strange, but now i wear multiple sprays of it and smelling it makes me go ahhhhh😌🥰. i see on here that it's especially popular as a cool weather scent but honestly extremely hot summer weather is what made me fall in love with it. there were so many moments over the course of this past summer when the heat made me (personally) not want to wear something too feminine or sweet/fruity, and this was what i reached for instead. i find breath of god is so fresh and vegetal that it almost has a cooling effect on super hot days. there was also one extremely hot sunny day i wore this on a walk and it mixed sooo beautifully with the smell of trees that had been cooking in the sun all day - the memory of that smell is now one of my most beloved perfume/scent memories. breath of god is a love for me, and a reminder that often it's worth giving perfumes time and more than one try before writing them off.

Enrium

Breath Of God is such an unusual scent. Dry and smoky, yet bright and fresh, it is a perfect contradiction. I have bought Lush products in the past, but largely disregarded their perfumes. However, thanks to some rave reviews, notably from Luca Turin, I made it my business to go back to Lush and seek out their scents.

BOG is smoky from initial spray thanks to the incense note, brightened with fresh, aquatic melon. Citrus notes emerge after a little while, with lemon most evident to my nose. Nose-tickling pepper enhances the incense note. The smokiness alongside the lemon reminds me of Hermès Eau de Citron Noir, a clever take on a lemon cologne. A bright juniper note adds pine-like freshness too. Here it veers towards unexpected barbershop territory.

Vetiver adds dry grassiness, making me think of a distant gorse fire thanks to the smokiness. Some neroli adds a soft floral-orange quality here. It mellows, becoming more aromatic as it develops with a smooth woodiness in the base. Aside from the neroli, there are no discernable florals to my nose. It fades to a dry, smoky, woody skin scent.

Sillage is moderate and longevity is long-lasting. Unisex, but perhaps masculine-leaning, it is an unusual woody barbershop scent, airy but with a good dose of smoky incense. A transeasonal day scent, BOG is creative and risky, but works. Try before buying though. 4/5.

barbarab1306

Please don't buy this one blind. There is a note in there that makes it absolutely unbearable to wear to me and makes me gag. God needs a dentist asap

Gatorsrules

This was one of my first “actual” fragrances as a teen, and still has a spot on my vanity. It’s fruity, a tad citrusy, Smokey, woody. It’s delicious! Definitely not a blind buy. I would also class Lush in the more indie-niche category, similar to Imaginary Authors. My gateway fragrance!

Nichole FZA

It's just not working for me, not meant for tropical country like Malaysia, I can't imagine wearing this outdoor under the sun. It's not that I don't like this perfume, it's genius but just that I can't wear it without being offensive to my surrounding.

1400ayahuasca

Simultaneously clean and dirty. Makes me sad that I don't have the fortitude to become a monk and abandon my life for the sanctity of a cold, quiet mountain.

myzk

I wanted to like this, I really did, but unfortunately I couldn't.
Got the solid at a discount and it was quite nice in the jar, but not long after I applied it it was nothing but sourness and smokiness, like something caught on fire and it was genuinely so unpleasant to me. Definitely try to test before you buy, it can be great for others I'm sure but it's just not for me... :(

Annabear

A bowl of lemons in a barber shop has just caught on fire, smoky and fresh at the same time. I really like it!

4dri3n

Lush's version of god has forsaken us in order to spend more time drinking peated whisky next to a fireplace in a barbershop deep in the woods.

It evokes an old powerhouse, but somehow updated to not smell entirely like you're wearing dad's perfume.

However, and I hate to admit it, I'm not sure I could get over the name.

Snifferdoodle

Ever have a bender and spill scotch on yourself?

Smells exactly like this.

Lom

This perfume smells so much like the smoky Ardbeg Scotch whisky. It's bright, smoky, fresh and earthy. Excellent!

DutchessOfMalodor

Skulking around in this like the girl Rasputin. Most lush perfumes to me, seem to have a certain repulsive-expired-syrup je ne sais quoi to them, this one does not :) it's fresh and overpowering in the way that I imagine suffocating at a high altitude due to lack of oxygen would be like.

RapolasO

I received a solid tester of this perfume. For me, this fragrance is too smoky and sort of smells like burning rubber. Later on, more pleasant notes emerge, but the smokiness spoils and overwhelms everything. Not for my taste at all...

Phillin

Step into this olfactory Tibetan prayer tent, inside of which you are transported across centuries by the redolence of burning incense and oil lamps. Just before you feel as though you might float away, you are grounded by the scent of the earthen floor rising to meet the animalic essences of the hides and furs comprising the tent. As your eyes adjust to the lighting inside, the wind blows something ozonic down from the peaks of the mighty snow-capped Tibetan mountain ranges, sweeping across verdant grasslands to deliver a fresh and sweet vegetal bouquet which dances in the air with smoke from the incense and oil lamps. Or just go to Lush and try it …

To be specific, I only use the solid version of this. I was instantly captivated by this fragrance. I love how the melon plays with the neroli and vetiver, which are two of my favorite notes. The smoke, at least in the solid version, and on my skin, is background to me, though my wife has stated she identifies the smoke note quite easily. The smoke quality is likely created by the way the incense and cedar dance around each other, rather than a smoky isolate, and I feel like that dance is what I'm picking up on, which is much more heady than some synthetic smoke bomb, many of which I have smelled, and this is not that. I should note that I also love A City on Fire by Imaginary Authors, which, despite its "burnt match" description, I again feel the smoke accord is simply a narrative holding the rest of the fragrance's story together, and actually takes a back seat as that fragrance dries down into something more sweet but with lots of dynamic accords, just like BOG, which is why I like both fragrances. Both are well built, but if your skin pH does weird things with smoke notes, or you just have no olfactory sensibility for these notes, then perhaps it isn't for you. Otherwise, step into the tent ...

BOG made me love fragrances that I call "ambrosias," by which I mean they have a lot going on. I frequently experiment with trying to create my own "ambrosia" by layering different fragrances. I know that's done, but I feel like people don't do it all that commonly because they are afraid of the potential results. I thought it was funny when I read "The Perfect Scent" by Chandler Burr and found out that Sarah Jessica Parker also did this by layering an oil she bought from an Islamic goods hawker on the streets of NY, a cheap drugstore musk, and I think Guerlain Vetiver, though now I forget exactly what the third layer was. Anyway, I felt confirmed in this practice as I read about her sheepishly explaining this habit to the creative team at Coty.

BOG is at once grounding and transporting. Seasonally it is a shape shifter, as I find it can be fresh in the summer and warm in the winter. As for formality, it is probably on the more casual side, though anything goes if you can pull it off, or create your own "ambrosia" ;)

EloiseAddinall

I love this scent..so many different essences but so well blended. It’s everything you want, like a big hug. I’ve got few other Lush perfumes like Lord of Misrule and 1000 kisses but none of them have that refined blend quality, this brings Breath of God to another level. Also the fact that Lush uses real oils does play a role in the evolution of the juice.

AmberTower77

First, test the solid. You get to avoid the weirdness factor of the opening. It races straight to melon and light mint with mild vetiver undergrowth. Second, the solid is far easier on your wallet. Fruity, earthy, and complex without the high “scrub factor.” The solid evolves nicely. 7 out of 10.

bobross

I loved this in store, it was the unique perfect cool-girl scent I was looking for so I bought a bottle. Once at home it straight up smelled like gasoline and made me gag. I was so upset and ended up returning it

jayanna

i find this scent so awful it's insane.. i accidentally over sprayed a trial on my wrist like more than 24 hours ago and I still catch whiffs of it despite scrubbing. the name is really fitting though which i like; there's something cruelly divine and crucifying about this fragrance

hotrodangel

There’s something so melancholic about Breath of God. It’s like a walk in the woods just as autumn turns to winter, and you can kind of smell things dying in the hedgerow. It’s smoky, almost rainy, with a kick of cedar and something dark and cloying, almost like rotting leaves. At the same time, its top notes are bright and citrusy (you can really pick it up on a paper sample - on the skin it immediately turns deeper, darker and less sour). Personally I think it's a cult classic, but I do understand why people dislike it. It's always going to be one of my favourites, and I consider it a very high quality fragrance at a very reasonable price tag. Recommended.

kiaoi

Yep, this is a weird one. To me it feels like an old, moldy wardrobe where old clothes covered in smoke are stored in plastic bags. Don’t get me wrong, I love incense and I lit one almost everyday but this isn’t good incense, this is the kind of incense that gives burnt perfume smell, a low quality one. It does smell like “wet barbecue”, like someone mentioned here. It makes me think of a humid, soggy place, maybe a tropical city street during a monsoon. This perfume might be for some, but it’s not for me.

RainbowGirl

Smoky. This is the breath of God, if God was a smoker. Smoke, forest...melon. Smoky melon. I don't know why... but I like it.

supersaiyan

Opens with an acrid, industrial patent leather shoe aroma mixed with grilled (and severely burnt) melons, not unlike a forgotten melon kebab buried in a pasture full of damp, horse-trodden soil. Make it past God's-halitosis opening and you'll find a beautifully smooth and delicately sweetened, earthy melon scent. If smell could have a texture, which I do believe it does, this is quite like moist, soft clay, or smooth red bean paste. A lovely and peaceful scent with power behind it. Remember to spray this on about 45min - 1 hour before before your plans if you want to wear it out.

ETA: Something about the opening of Breath of God is disgusting but I cannot stop wearing it, I gravitate towards its meditative, calming, soil-like melon qualities after initial industrial blast dissipates.

HeavyBeatsUK

I like the name. It really stinks unpleasant at first - muddy - but settles down to a nice masculine aroma that reminds me of my late dad. It reminds me of Cerruti 1881 for men

This remains my favorite perfume, even after 10 years. Something about it just hits me viscerally; it smells like warm cedar with a little bit of zest to liven it up. Not really sure how to describe it, it's just so unique and special. That uniqueness can be quite segregating, though. I'm not really sure what the note in it is that separates it so much from other scents, despite the fairly common ingredients.

So yeah, some people really don't like it. It's extremely pungent. I've met people that actively hate the smell, so I get a little paranoid when I wear it in public. I own the liquid perfume and the solid, and I REALLY recommend the solid as the perfume is just... SO heavy. The solid manages to damped the scent somewhat, make it more wearable.

This is a very unique fragrance, so in that sense I could see it to be a bit polarizing and a bit of an unsafe blind buy. This definitely doesn't have any "common" or "generic" DNA, and it has a presence to it. This one's for those of you looking for something different. Breath of God is woody, spicy and earthy. It's completely unisex.

The incense and cedar notes are prominent and they give a very dry, yet strongly aromatic vibe. Black pepper is also there to contribute some spice. It's quite hard to describe because there's not much to compare it to. I sprayed it twice on my wrist and it's still going strong 7 hours later. It was particularly strong in the first 15 minutes I sprayed it- the performance on this one certainly isn't subtle. I really love the dry down even more than the initial spray. It's comforting yet it reminds me of an old empty church, where you're the only one there. The florals are barely there but give a hint of something beautiful through the strong, stark main notes.

Overall, Breath of God is definitely one of the Lush perfumes to try out.

I got this today, there's a shop in Greece so I had to order it and try it.
It starts with a very aggressive vetiver smokey note, after a few seconds pepper, lemon, and grapefruit kick in.
It takes 5-10 minutes to transform into an old-fashioned 70-80s fragrance with notes that remind me of spa for older people and my uncle's fragrances from the 80s, very confusing and not necessarily pleasant. 15 minutes later a clay-like smell with a bit of rose, grapefruit, and lemon remains on my skin, similar to going to a shop that sells bathtubs sinks, etc ... . This is not a pleasant fragrance, unfortunately, it smells old but not in a good way at least on me.

I’ve had this perfume for a while. Bought a larger bottle when the small ran out.
This is a lovely, artful, soulful, distinctive perfume. I love the atmospheric yet grounding quality. On one friend it turns much sweeter and more feminine. On myself it retains the ozone like petrichor quality that I love. Along with something bitter but pleasant.
This is a fun perfume to layer. It is still very recognizable when layered but makes other things more interesting that lack depth.
This is a perfume I wear when I just want something interesting. Or want to smell that cloud like magic.
But it’s also what I wanted when I was grieving a loved one. And what I wanted to wear when searching for a new house. It is very grounding, and it heightens your awareness, brings you to your senses since it’s so unique.

Angekkuma

I can appreciate this for the piece of art that it is, but this smells awful on me. On my skin it smells like gasoline and menthol, so harsh and repulsive I had to scrub it off immediately. I wanted to smell the melon note so badly but all I could pick up was the most putrid combination of industrial chemicals all set on fire.

When sprayed on a paper tester, it strangely took me back to childhood summers spent in the Philippines. It smells exactly like that humid smokiness of the Philippine islands and I can’t pinpoint why. Will give this another try next time I visit lush, perhaps my nose needs to adjust to it as I’m still new to perfumes.

Loving Awareness

Interesting, challenging but not inherently pleasant. The masculine smokiness is not enticing and rather a bit too overt. The raw approach to formulation is a hard sell for regular wear. I may use it during yoga/meditation for its incense-like presence

A.Puppet

This is the most changeable perfume, you really can’t say what it is, who it’s for, when or where to wear it until you tried it and let it develop on you. On me I don’t get any fruit, powder or freshness like some others, it’s all woodsmoke and incense. Truly a unique creation.

Callista25

This has that tuberose and bacon accord of reformulated Maai. Lush perfumes are quite a statement. Artistic and innovative, just not my style.

brokesta911

Gorilla Breath of God (2010) - metamorphosis - #simonconstantine is an alchemist. I go through the list of ingredients he used for this perfume and it’s not exactly what I smell. It starts with Grapefruit, Lemon and Neroli. Then I get this melon and bubblegum accord most probably from the citruses interacting with Ylang-ylang and Rose oil. In the base, I get an incense-like accord coming from Black Pepper and Cade mixed with Cedar, Vetiver and Sandalwood. Reminds me of fruit incense sticks, topical pain rubs, smoked meat, cedar cabinets and a visit to a Thai mall. So you can sense, dear reader, this perfume isn’t some holy site or god himself - but showing facets of his creation.

MajaGordon

I love this perfume. It’s in my top 5 best perfumes I’ve ever owned. It is so different, interesting, intelligent, ever changing, evocative, soothing, outdoors-y. You must try it if you love perfume. It might blow your mind, and your preconceptions. Superb and insanely affordable in the solid formulation.

anders.pilot

not unisex for sure female , smells like something an older lady would wear

Frangipanilove

Smokey, as in lapsang souchong smokey, salty smokey, on a bed of cedarwood and fresh grapefruit. Strange blend of smoke on top of fresh notes of yellow citrus and green woods but somehow this works. More masculine than feminine though not uncomfortable for a woman to wear. Cozy, like a male edible fragrance. For a great outdoors type of a man into fishing, hunting and climbing rock faces in the Siberian tundra. Not a fragrance for me to wear but would potentially quite like it on the right person, in his lumberjack shirt and Nortface jacket.

Dhandho

Complexity vs. Value. Challenging vs. Love at first sniff. This is the beginning of my relationship with Breath. I admit the first weakness and knock is the name. Unique concept and inspiration but a bold name choice that may have raised the bar too high. However, it is very under appreciated and at such cheap pricing for "niche" and very high level of naturals it is worth a sniff. The scent itself is very unique and I discovered vetiver is the most dominant note and the other notes are supporting except incense which challenges the vetiver to take over the scent. It is smokey, woody, and clearly interesting. But I think It will grow on you the more you wear it and it will change during the day and with the weather. This is not by accident, this is a trademark of skill and quality naturals. It also can be layered really well as the scent is actually a combination of two stand alone scents; if you find it falls short of your taste. I am happy to own it and would encourage if you get a chance to wear it, do. 4/5

Evenfragrance

It is strong! Sandalwood and incense - almost menthol-y! I think if you want to emanate spirituality and smell like a temple, this is the scent for you! Suits elaborately decorated, skimpy clothes, a meditative pose and a warm cosy environment to balance it's coolness. Candles and incense not optional. A sensory overload that is intoxicating for some! I love how it smells on my skin after I've been for a swim or a shower. Personally too strong for me before that.

thelittlehouseofg

I love the bizarre disharmony of this scent! The burnt rubber! I never wear this alone, always with a contrasting citrusy scent.

The smokiness with the kicks of juniper and maybe some pepper and maybe some incense, and maybe who the hell knows, but I'm digging it. It's comforting to smell the mundane, sometimes unpleasant things and take it at face value...nothing smells bad, it's how you see it. This fragrance is in a way iconoclastic.

Reminds me of Bvlgari Black but much more unapologetic with the burnt rubber smell.

Coquita

According to Lush, God must have serious halitosis problems. The sales assistant told me this would be right by my alley (woodsy, fruity, and smokey), but all I could smell in the opening was TAR (very realistic tar), which was very interesting but unwearable. The late dry-down improved significantly, shifting to a citrusy-woodsy scent where the vetiver takes the central stage. This late phase is quite an improvement, but I don't think it's necessary to pass through the opening. Luckily the projection was soft after half an hour, so I didn't have to smell that forcibly.

Orion's Arm

I normally like Lush fragrances. Breath of God smelled cheap and peppery, like a standard middle-aged man's cologne.

Could just be my skin chemistry, but I'm giving this one a hard pass.

Absolutely Surreal (Simon Constantine, 2007)

Scentrack: Serge Gainsbourg - Bonnie and Clyde (Herbert's Fred and Ginger Mix)

This shape shifting monster changes every minute. Sweetheart bubblegum, smell of fermented autumnal leaves on a cold wind, old chimney smoke, morning fresh toothpaste... Breath of God is in everything. Even its acronym BOG stands for God in my language.
The incense of ancient temples meshed with the mint and garnered with sweet melon and other fruits. Accompanied in the drydown with unbelievably dark woods.
A surreal fragrance, worth waiting, still not my cup of tea.

Rating: 8/10

numcks

Odd, oil and water concoction of a deep, incense/woody/vetiver half and a frivolous melon/citrus/floral half fighting for dominance throughout the development, with each claiming moments of fleeting victory and retreat. They never come together or cooperate, but the nose / mind amalgamates the signals into something interesting and compelling and more than the sum of its disjointed parts. A funky, fun fragrance that is the antithesis of formal.

ts4r

I have natural cade and oakmoss absolutes.. This is a good mix of the two. A very cool strange smokey concoction with some limonool added. The smoke smells like BBQ meat.

This doesn't smell like the smoke in Aventus. The smoke in aventus is derived from Juniper wood and the fruit/flower buds. Cade is the juniper wood/leaves.

A like for me. I have a sample and won't get a bottle.

FUN - FUNKY - IMPOLITE

I think Lush have unwittingly become the anti-niche of the perfume industry. Often charming in their crudeness. This is not to diminish the father and son’s work at all as I feel their craftsmanship should be praised. Their pricing is very reasonable and vary from fragrance to fragrance, although their bottles leave a lot to be desired. Even using the current bottles with their older funky labels would be a massive improvement .

Breath of God is very well blended and not nearly as jarring as something like Rentless (also from Gorilla Perfumes). Rentless is a rough ride that opens with bitter anise and sharp citrus that stumbles into labdanum and tonka as the fragrance progresses. Breath of god holds your hand and walks you from phase to phase and is beautiful every step of the way. Considering Breath of God is the lovechild of two fragrances previously made by Simon Constantine (Son) under the names Inhale and Exhale it does an amazing job of feeling seamless.

In the opening I get a cacophony of incense, patchouli and a soft cantaloupe melon humming gently underneath. I imagine the incense is an interpretation of Tibetan Incense as Simon was inspired to make both Inhale and Exhale when visiting Tibet. I’ve never smelt Tibetan Incense before but the impression I get is a dry wood, subtle spices and smoke. As everything begins to calm down after 5 or so minutes the fragrance comes into its own. The soft melon note comes to the surface and balances out the fragrance, offering a fruity sweetness to juxtapose against the dry incense. It is this constant push and pull of contrasting elements that keep the fragrance so interesting. On some wearings I get a massive dose of dry incense and on others it’s a light fruity experience. Overall the fragrance is pretty light and ethereal on skin. It slinks in and out of consciousness, delighting you with its presence.

Breath of God is a masterclass in perfumery. From what I know, Mark and Simon do not have any sort of formal training, however they make wonderful fragrances that come from a place of passion. It’s this then that makes them so special and unique to the art. They’re a wildcard with no indoctrinated set of rules to limit them.
I will continue to support Gorilla Perfumes for as long as they are willing to make weird and unapologetic fragrances that run circles around 98% of the designers released today.

gtabasso

resinous, swear there is myrrh, lots of juniper mainly, some incense more like sweet smoke, sandalwood, cedar, citrus in the top, very sweet saplike and as it dries down it gets drier and more cedar

GenevaX

Breath of God's name and unusual composition lend themselves to hyperbole, both for and against, but as much of a shape-shifter as this is, I find each stage likable if not quite swoon-worthy. First there's the barbecued fruit skewer, smokey and melony. That subsides to an incense-laden floral. Finally, there's the musky fruity floral that wouldn't be out of place in a more punk, youthful designer house's output - Vivienne Westwood in a puckish mood. This doesn't send chills up my spine, but its consistently appealing to my nose.

UnearthlyApothecary

Whew! Breath of God is an olfactory trip! Immediately after first application is rough, it’s straight camphor, campfire smoke and burnt rubber. After a bit though, it becomes a little more wearable and although the camphor is still going strong, the melon sweetness has arrived on the scene with a lovely touch of ylang. I think fans of this will also like Penhaligon’s Elixir. Lasts forever and has great throw. I’m not sure what I think of this strange combination of Inhale and Exhale but it is very unique and has more of an aromatherapy vibe then a this smells amazing I want to smell like this” feeling. I like smelling it, but I don’t like smelling like it lol Sniffing my wrist while wearing it clears my mind (and my sinuses)UPDATE: so after several hours I get to a point wearing this where I actually really love it, it becomes a cozy woodsy skin scent that reminds me of the dry down of a men’s cologne. But if it worth the journey to get there? That remains to be seen ;)

This is sssmokin magical. A magic smoke. Its breath smells of so many things. It is medicinal, it’s trashy. It’s subliminal, it’s flashy.
It’s vetiver, and everything but vetiver. A melon from Earth 2.
This fragrance makes me want to throw a lemon on the grill, add some thyme and mushrooms, and eat it with milk chocolate.

This one smells oddly like...
artisanal breakfast?

Toast that's had a burnt crust scraped off, peppery citrus grilled on a cedar plank, melon on the side.

It's like a savory gourmand--
but it works, in a honeymoon morning, cabin-in-the-woods kind of way.

Andy the Frenchy

Nice woody/smoky fragrance, with a strong fruity support. On the same shelf as AC Vetiver Fatal, and Byredo Bal d'Afrique.
Leans feminine to my nose, and as a man, I preferred the original half: Exhale.

I have a few Lush scents that I enjoy but I was doing more reading about their fragrance offers and Breath Of God was intriguing so I had to stop by and try it out. I have been wearing BOG for two days now and feel I have a handle on this fragrance on my skin.

BOG starts out, on me, with a very noticeable Neroli and strong turpentine scent from the Juniper and Cedar, it quickly looses the turpentine scent and becomes very fruity, the melon is very strong. After a very short time, half an hour, the dry down is a velvety, sweetish rose sandalwood. Every now and then I catch a whiff of what I am sure is Neroli again and perhaps some vetiver.

I get no smoky nor lemon from this.

I love this scent, it is what I would consider as delicious, though it is not strong on me and does not project far, which makes it perfect for work. I did notice because it is fairly hot out that while riding the bus I would catch a stronger whiff of the scent which was very pleasing. It is a scent that makes me happy.

No scent is for everyone and I would not tell anyone to buy this without first trying on themselves. To do any scent justice you have to get away from other scents in the air and let it all develop.

Don Pitralon

Artistic perfumery found in the most unlikely place - Lush. Really niche experience, the opening is like nothing I have ever smelled. An alternative name of this scent could be a chameleon - you can identify tonne of notes and it changes every five minutes and differs on different people. The combination of notes sounds a bit crazy and so does the story of origin of this perfume. I find it innovative and avant-garde yet surprisingly wearable. Certainly won’t suit everyone, but what a heck, you can try it at almost any corner and own original and high quality fragrance for a fraction of designer price.
Later edit: It actually dries down into fruity smokey musky base that to me smells a lot like Aventus. I'm surprised to see it mentioned only once in the reviews below. It is quite striking similarity. That being said, it doesn't seem to me as intentional and I would not call it a clone (also because of the wild opening).

richard.legg

I completely love this, but I can see why so many people wouldn't. This smells like no other fragrance I own, very natural, really concentrated, completely bonkers notes, quirky... the list goes on. Just go in store and try it, you might love it!

Sabretoothkitten

I agree with JC2109... I'm just too much of a wallflower for Lush apparently. This is just straight up weird. Breath of God sounds borderline blashphemoyys...more like doggie breath. I can't discern any notes except a weird staleness.
And some people love that. Just not me, to wear.

Diego Esk

Very unique juice, I get this very distinctive smell of petrichor (attar Mitti) reminds you of rain, it also smells dry woods and some fruit with incense, definitely not a blind buy but for sure a unique scent that will make you stand out and smell different without going to crazy, here in the middle east they have changed the name to Inhale Exhale ( more appropriate religiously i guess) if you pass by a lush shop and you are into weird stuff, spray some of their Cardamom Coffee perfume, that one is also lovely. cheers

ronin.jose

This one's pretty weird. When I sprayed this on the paper, initially, I get this unusual, unperfumey, woody, yet industrial smell, but it also smells cool and almost herbal, like perhaps menthol. But I immediately sprayed this on my skin, then I get something straight up industrial. Specifically like the shoe polish by Kiwi. Then as it settles down on my skin. It's no longer as industrial as the opening. It's a bit more toned down and now it smells more like a leather shoes polished with that shoe polish by Kiwi. So I kind of get this leathery note, but not an animalic leather but more of an industrial leather. My sister said it smells like cigarette. Like as if someone has been smoking. Which I disagree. I don't get any of that stale, dry, yet somehow smooth, smokey cigarette smell. It's definitely more of an industrial-like, Kiwi shoe polish, leather shoes like smell. This one's weird and I'd say different from the rest of the other Lush fragrances that I've smelled. But I really like it. In fact, out of all the Lush fragrances that I've smelled, I'd this one's the best.

Konga5000

Not a safe blind buy.

Jucmorgo

I know, Lush perfumes develop on different ways on different people, but "my way" is rather interesting:
incensy-fruity-melon.
I should smell smoke, rose, depth etc... but this perfume is rather sweet-fruity on me with a large hint of sweet incense.
This other line: pepper-rose-smoke-mystical loner comforting scent :) is the All good things - on me, anyway. That perfume brings this deep, mystical, comforting side of the Breath of God. And longevity of All good things is like.... forever. Breath of God can do a couple of hours and two-three days on clothes, especially on scarfs.
:)

DulciusExAsperis

weirdly, the best way i can describe this is, "fresh dry smoke." There's something lightly campfire-y about it but it's lent an almost minty uplifting note which I think is the juniper. Then the austere dryness of vetiver. Then as someone below mentioned there's a touch of a gasoline-y edge and all these things together make me think, a bit, of new car smell. But smoky.

Unique for sure! And perfectly unisex. Unusual to find a smoky scent that is fresh, uplifting, energizing and not at all "dirty." I like it. Do I want to wear it? Not necessarily. I think it's good, though.

FoxChild

I am addicted to this perfume. I love the brand, and this one stays on my skin so well, reminding me it is there and that I smell good for everyone else! ;D
It can be a little heavy - so I would suggest evening wear. It is warm and intriguing. I live in fear I will run out and discover that Gorilla Perfumes are no linger making it!

atarilynx

Wow... I had to try this at my local mall. While I found most of the Lush scents I sampled to have a certain sameness to them, I did like Breath of God. The name comes from religious use of incense in Tibet... What supposedly inspired this fragrance.

The smoke opening is quite strong... A bit more smoke than incense, but after 10 minutes it chills out, and gets more fruity..a but of salted melon with a barbershop base.

I'm not sure if it would stand out amongst the 100+ scents currently in my wardrobe, but I do enjoy it doing something different.

chickincanada

Clearly when I was busy watching Seinfeld I missed the boat that led to LUSH. I looked down at those who used shampoo in a solid bar form and soap you cut from a huge disk. What a blind fool I was, I was surprised that they even had any perfume, let alone ones that were complex. It’s come to a point in my life where I couldn’t justify wearing perfume that are made by companies who engage in animal testing so my search led me to LUSH.

I didn’t think natural perfume could be anything more than singular in scent. Boy, was I wrong! Wanting to branch out of my gourmand palate to something that required a bit of work. I read the reviews for Breath of God and decided I must try this and off I went to a previously avoided LUSH store. I knew to expect Breath of God to be something challenging, which was exactly what I was looking for.

It’s a bit like going on a roller coaster for someone who abhor extreme rides. After the harness buckles shut, a moment of panic and dread come over you. Then you’re pretty much catatonic from fear as it slowly and torturously clicks up the track. It crests and you’re rolling down in a horrifying free fall. Tossed about up, down, over and as you slide back into the loading bay, you are just exhilerated and want to go on it again. That was Breath of God for me.

I went for another ride and walked out of the store with a bottle.

thescentofbali

I think I offended the salesgirl when I originally sniffed this scent and said it smelled like a smoky scotch. Her eyes balked - "a really good scotch," I quickly added. I didn't mean to offend her, but given she was about 17 or 18, and having likely never tasted a pungent bonfire of a scotch before, she must have found my comment off-putting. I meant it as a compliment, of course, as someone who has fond memories of drinking peaty scotch on foggy winter nights, tucked away in pine-laden maritime hills, but yep, I'm sure she didn't catch that vibe I was feelin'.

I like this. It's also got a little of that turpentiney or gasoline edge to it, but nestled into some really treacly sweetness. In short, you could describe Breath of God in the exact words my favorite scotch: "In a long finish, bonfire embers toast malt and crystallise a sugary underlay." And that's precisely why I love this fragrance.

rum

Hard to understand how a store such as LUSH can produce such a polarising scent: I've long said how off-putting LUSH is as a store for a man to visit. But in this day and age, this should be no excuse.

Breath of God really surprises. As a totally unisex scent, the scent opens with florals underpinned by a certain smokiness that is fruity-fresh and yet addictive. It is never over-powering, even with several sprays, and lasts well into the night or the next day.

The dry-down though is really sublime. Gentle, incense-like smoke, neroli, ylang-ylang, pepper and rose really do stick out. But the juice is blended together so well, it's hard to tell exactly what you are smelling at any one time.

The trail left behind is really something else and appeals to even the most conservative noses. I find it's one of few scents I would wear again in the same week (maybe even the same day).

I may never find out what God's breath smells like, but this one sure took mine away!

Ahl

Don’t know how this scent develops on me because both times I tried it I had to wash it off ASAP. Was in Lush with hubby the other day, pondering getting a bottle of Smuggler’s Soul when I mentioned Breath of God. Said it has a bit of a fan base of people who rave about it but I just don’t get the appeal. So he offers his wrist, which I give a single spray. “Oh! Ugh! It smells like a..... dirty wet ashtray with a hint of bum!” He immediately went to the wash station to try to scrub it off to no avail. We ended up in Debenhams where he then tried to cover it up with the strongest fragrances we could think of - Aramis, Spice Bomb...Five fragrances later and it was masked a bit but still coming through.

In summary, use a test strip first.

teenspirit

Love the name and it's vegan so had to try it. When it opened I recoiled in horror, urgh so medicinal, like antiseptic but after a while it settles and wow love it in the dry down! So unique, still a hint of antiseptic but so much more, also warm and comforting. Liked it so much I bought the biggest bottle and I'm wearing it now. IF there is a God maybe his breath would smell like this! Hello little weirdo indeed. Love it.

chrisarcarola75

I love this. I cant quite place it though. Smells to me like what a fruit shishkabob would smell like on the grill with a strong barbershop note. I get asked all the time what im wearing when i have this on. I hope its a good thing?

MeanSuga

Well, hello there, my Little Weirdo .
I chose you, as the Smell of Weather Turning was unavailable.
You are reminiscent of my Grandpa`s hair grooming cream, and aftershave.
Fresh, woodsy, fires and incense burning exotic.
Green, webbed hide, dewy melon smoke.
Dry , crackling, and dampness.
Quite interesting unions.
A stand out, a surprise, yet a comfort .

happy-knight

I'm coming back to mention that while I do really enjoy this scent, as it ages on my skin i detect this almost OLIVE OIL note and it's a bit bothersome. I have no idea if its because i'm using the dropper or something else.

Don't take my word as gospel on whether or not to get this, though. It could be my skin chemistry not working with it in the later hours and living in really warmer humid weather could be to blame.

cinksm

I love this fragrance. It just reminds me of my childhood, I don't know why. It's woodsy, but fruity as well. It has melony notes. To me, it's a summer scent. The sillage is great. It's definitely a masculine scent. 5/5

happy-knight

Its a very particular scent,

the first hour I sprayed it I wasn't a fan, just smelled like a concentrated vetiver. Very strong and unapologetic.

However On Its dry down it mellowed out into a woody, sweet, minty essence that I can't really describe to you.

Someone on here said it smelt like bubble gum (probably because of the vetiver and melon) and I can see that.

All in all- it is totally earthy but done very well.

However, I can assure you it's only going to work for as well appeal to a certain type of person

I for one found it to be massively interesting and I'd love a bottle of this , for sure not for every day use but on certain days it'd be nice.

NZFH

Not how I imagine the breath of God would smell. The opening is more like a burnt offering to the gods - assuming those gods appreciate the acrid smoke of burning plastic, tar, acrylic, etc. not quite so pungent after it "burns" down a bit, but nor is it something I want to smell like or wear.

Breath of God

I wore this a few days ago and a stranger described the scent as "intimidating but beautiful" and that was why he chose to continue to stand near me, so he could take in the scent and try to understand it. Breath of God is my first ever fragrance purchase from Lush and it won't be my last, I'll definitely repurchase this once i'm done with my bottle and i'll have to look further into their other offerings as well. To me this smells both smokey and fruity, both dark and light, both fresh but also quite heavy- it's a fragrance of contradictions, almost bi-polar in a way and I enjoy how it plays out my skin. I like to imagine a man smoking an old-fashioned pipe in a dark room at a table where a bowl of ripe fruit is placed in the middle of the table and exhales a cloud of tobacco over the fruit, with a smile on his face. It lasts around 4-5 hours on my skin but lasts for days on my clothes. I did try the 'solid perfume' version of this fragrance and to me they smell completely different, it's definitely not as complex or interesting as the spray.

mila476

I started wearing this in high school in solid form (back when they had those black push-up tubes that couldn't push down--so glad they replaced those with the tins). I have the liquid now, and the scent is just as dear to me. Smoky and fruity at the same time, it seems perfect for me: I can be kind of broody at times, and at other times I'm bubbly and sociable. It worked for me in high school when I was trying to seem more interesting than I was (and flirting with a punk/goth aesthetic) and it works for me now that I've grown up and mellowed out and stopped trying to put on an image. Breath of God has depth, but it doesn't take itself too seriously. I think that's a good way to be, for both a person and a perfume.

So, moving on from the vibe: the fragrance itself. Unlike a lot of smoky/spicy fragrances, which can get quite heavy and suffocating, Breath of God is lifted up by a sweet aquatic fruity accord. This makes it extremely wearable. I find that my personal chemistry allows the melon notes to linger longer than the peppery incense ones, which is a nice way for it to mellow out over time. I never get tired of this fragrance, and while I wouldn't wear it on a first date or a job interview (it's a bit too interesting for a first impression and could be polarizing), it'll always come through for me for both everyday use and special events.

maxpowerboston

This stuff straight up smells like a burning church when you put it on. Ash/smoke/incense. It's heavy, loud, gag-inducing (at least for me).

Then it turns sweet and soft. It's crazy how, once the smoke/ash/incense burns off, it changes into a mellow, fruity and kind of nice sweet scent. I've never had a scent shift so significantly.

Longevity was above average on my skin and projection was above average, as well.

5.0/10 for me. I'd never wear this regularly but the challenge and evolution is cool if you're a scent-fiend. Spray some on next time you're at the mall.

Dorange Sense

Maybe the first woody scent I will purchase.

1. Petrolium | LOVE that stage, but lasts too short!
2. Smoked Melon | Maybe melon in smoked ham?
3. Melon
4. After-Shave

Plus a tiny film of toothbrush in every stage because of bad breath alert.

Maoocha

Smells exactly like Pu Erh tea and a musty attic. Tried thus 3 times to confirm it. The perfumer did a great job.
Although it's not something that I would wear regularly, just like fine wine, it would give great pleasures to spritz and sniff it every so often.

coleus

A strange fragrance. It can be challenging, but there's something undeniably rewarding here. At first, it just smelled like salt to me. It didn't even read as a perfume. However, for some reason I went back for more. This scent smells a little different to me every time I wear it. Sometimes I get salt air, sometimes intense smoky incense that is almost like an ashtray which then dissolves into a fresh fruity melon with herbal compliments. Sometimes I get fresh hay. My description doesn't sound great, but it's actually a very beautiful fragrance, and one of my favourites because it is ever mysterious and surprising. However, it is not always a crowd pleaser. I have gotten complements on this fragrance but my boyfriend doesn't like it at all. I usually wear this during some relaxing alone time. It is perfect for a walk on a crisp autumn day. Great fragrance but not for everyone!

Ivyswirl

Honestly, my first impression was that this smells like a farm.

Not in a bad way, I actually love it but it's got some real barnyard on me, from hay to a sort of dustiness! Personally I would love a spray bottle rather than just the solid as I genuinely love it, it reminds me of my rural Yorkshire early years and some days when I am working long hours in a confined space it's the closest to the great outdoors I'll get. Definitely worth a sniff if you love the British countryside!

Marabel36

Smells like a tobacco cigarette before you light it up. Interesting creation, to say the least.

Melanthe

The acrid smoke of wet leaves thrown on a fire with a nasty, sickly sweetness lurking underneath.

When the smoke dies down it smells like bubblegum and toothpaste on me, with the occasional waft of melon.

I like challenging fragrances, so I'm happy to have this in my collection, but it needs a careful hand or it completely overwhelms on opening.

Decent longevity and sillage, but thankfully it's not a visitor that outstays its welcome.

Not a daily scent.

joe70062

This perfume begins with smoke, a sweetish smoke. Very smooth. I don't get melon from the sweetness. I've never encountered a melon that smells like this. The smoke stays for the whole ride. Fresh woody smoke. Top to bottom. I love it!! I love incense and own Avignon (the incense King), but this is lighter and smoother. Dare I call it better? Possibly. It lasted a good five hours. But the silage is close. It's lovely and highly recommended!

sashapoppy

I associate this fragrance with my mother circa 1975. She loved Jean Nate', and since my parents heated with wood, all of our clothes were kissed with the faintest hint of wood smoke. That's what I smell here-a smoky, lemon-y, chypre-ish, and utterly comforting cocktail. I don't wear it often, but every time I do I fall in love with it all over again.

Ivyswirl

I treated myself to a 2 pots of lush solid perfumes and this is the first I trialed.

Having been up at 4am to do a lot of outdoors stuff in the mud, rain and woods this fitted rather well as to me it smells like smoke, herbs and hay. Stuff is pungent, damp and strange but fresh somehow.

I notice everyone got different notes and I see how that happens, this stuff is so strange but I'm glad I added it to my collection! I'd have preferred the spray bottles but these were cheaper.

Cassiopeia99

This one's pretty weird. When I first tried this at Lush, I was like "What is this it's awful!"

I went around throughout Chicago the rest of the day with this on my wrist and didn't pay attention to it, but when I put my watch on the next morning, something smelled really good. It was this perfume! It smelled incensy, with a hint of melon. For such a heavy scent I would have expected better longevity but 6 hours is pretty good. I Have been wanting to get a bottle of this for a while now, so hopefully soon.

rl_212

The scent was always confusing to me. Too many things happening in the background and foreground. I'm not sure what I like about it or even if I like it, but my curiosity draws me to it.

savageinstrangeland

I went into lush over a year ago and fell in absolute LOVE with their fragrance line... I felt they were such a brilliant departure from the typical, mainstream fare being pushed on consumers nowadays. They are all such brave and daring scents! I instantly fell head over heels for the work of the nose behind these scents, Mark Constantine. That day I bought Lust, Dirty, Sikkim Girls, Karma, & Breath of God. Lush scents all seem to have excellent silage for the first two hours and after that they sit a little closer to the body for the rest of the day. Now, On my little shopping spree I learned that you really have to try Lush scents on your own skin AND wait for them to develop. I ended up not liking the Breath of God on me (I gave it to my husband and it smells totally amazing on him) & Karma smelled awful on me despite the fact that Karma was the one I went to the store intending to buy because it smelled so good on a client of mine.

Breath of God is great on some people and I wish I were one of those people! I still get to smell the magical transformation I was hoping for on my husband though. So it was still a win. lol

Chaos Reigns

It would take a whole day now for anyone to read all that’s been commented here. Should I even add anything? I agree that it’s definitely unsexy, yet marvelous. You won’t feel like using it every week - sooner or later you’ll give it a break. I love its chameleon nature. I think the base that it eventually dries down to shouldn’t be so controversial at all. It’s an intelligently blended, complex soapy light base, leaving only the memory of the weird-fruity opening and the incense stages. B.O.G is one of the best and most interesting experiences I’ve ever had in my life. Yes, I said experiences, not just perfumes.

Despite all my admiration, it should be added that the poor longevity is a let-down. You’ll get 20-30 minutes of the fruity-smoky astonishment, than you’re left with no more than a high-end scented skin, detectable only at close sniffing… which also applies to the majority of Lush perfumes, the subtle difference being that B.O.G. is quite adequatley priced. I prefer using it AT HOME.

Remarkable bits from reviews:
- charismatic
- not sexy
- alluring but not necessarily sexy
- forces of push and pull, attract, and repel
- for mature people
- NSFW
- a distinctive, bizarre composition
- I'm not quite sure if its dissonance is really well crafted chaos or just a beautifully fascinating trainwreck.
- attracts many questions from others
- addictive
- I really love it, but I know we’ll have a troublesome relationship.
- not perfumey
- alien-esque, out-of-this-world
- surreal
- not for philistines

smell as bbq.

ras.kel.5

It smells as if you were bbqing fruits in the middle of the forest. Very masculine and intense smokiness in the beginning, it mellows out with time as the fruits become a bit stronger. Perfectly unisex.

guynspfld

Such a unique scent. Earthy incense. Not for everyone, but perfect for me. I have wore this since it came out.

Lowehetar

I absolutely love this one.
This is a truly unique fragrance. It is full-blown incense - cedar- rose on my skin, but I talked with a shop assistant in LUsh shop and we tried it on her, and wow what a difference: no smokiness on her, no incense at all (!!!) just citrus and melon! (I cannot detect any melon on my skin, not at all!)

So a word of warning with this one: TRY IT ON YOUR SKIN! Do NOT blind buy it. It does behave very differently depending on your skin chemistry!!
I happen to love the comfy smokiness and incense on me, and the rose is just sweet enough underneath that bazar-like spicy scent. However, there are days when this is just too much.

As with all the Lush Gorilla perfumes that I have tried, this too has amazing sillage. It lasts forever. Put it on in the morning and I can still smell it in the evening when I take my shower. So not a perfume to be worn in open office space...
Still, a wonderful perfume. Need to buy another bottle!

Russian girl

I love this one, it is very woody and smoky, but transparent at the same time. I find it absolutely genderless. It is really relaxing and calming, smells natural. Lush perfumes are really different and sometimes shocking, it is my favorite. Deep, complex, extravagant in its naturalness.

Inhershoes

First sniff: I've been in a crude oil spill.
Hours later: I'm wrapped in a sophisticated haze of cedary smoke.

An olfactory experience not to be missed. Go try it, it's wonderful!

app9

First whiff is cray cray. It's very sharp and medicinal, almost petrol-like. But on my skin it soon starts to develop into a soft, lush (hehe) and wonderfully unique perfume. It has incense, melon, sandalwood and woods. Unfortunately it's not as long lasting as I would have wished for, but it's no problem for me to add some more. I have it in liquid and solid, haven't tried yet if together they would have more staying power.

I love this perfume, I have nothing else like this. It's maybe a tad masculine, but I don't feel like it's a manly perfume at all. It just is like God, both feminine AND masculine. For me that's perfection. And the name, oh the name. I love it. It's cool to wear a perfume that's Breath of God. No silly cheriés or what ever.

bronstein

A nice one, smokey and rich in ingredients. Like its sister fragrance, Smugglers Soul, it is very manly and kind of adventurous. By no means a classic, but definitely a nice composition for the moment.

I bought solid version for my boyfriend as he loves everything related to Tibet (as I read this perfume is created with inspiration of Tibet). Yesterday I tried it on myself and I found something annoying about it. Annoying because I really like the most of it except the melon. The melon just doesn't blend well. I felt like I had two conflicting scents on me...like a juicy slice of melon wrapped in smoke...but the melon is repulsing everything around it. If only the melon wasn't there I could say I have finaly found that smoky unisex perfume I am searching for. Probably this isn't the right perfume for warm or humid days, so I will try it again in winter.

Skayalily

The opening is challenging and harsh; I noted it as "weird, hot rubber" the first time I tested it in LUSH. But, I like rubber notes, so I waited for what else would develop. The melon comes in quickly on me. It softens and sweetens the whole scent. And then it gets so very difficult to describe at this point because it's hard to explain the things I absolutely love. I returned to LUSH a few times and graced the entire mall with my testing; until I had to have my own full bottle. This is one of the most compelling scents I wear, it's wrist crack for me. Smokey, rubber, melon, woods/camping/bonfire; very atmospheric. It's not for everyone; my mother hates it and wrinkles her nose when I'm wearing it. Yet, a close friend of mine practically buried his nose into my shoulder (which wasn't even a place I had applied the perfume) once. He said I smelled like someone had thrown pine needles into the embers of a bonfire and I had sat in the smoke. Strong and Long, I love it.

Napper216

I think this - or at least the little solid tin of it - has been reformulated :(.... I bought some today and have noticed that I no longer get so much of the sweet fruitiness I used to. Definitely no melon, at any rate.

The ingredients list reads as follows:

Organic Jojoba Oil
Castor Oil
Candelilla Wax
Perfume (?!)
Lemon Oil
Cedarwood Oil
Rose Oil
Ylang Ylang Oil
Vetiver Oil
Grapefruit Oil
Neroli Oil
Black Pepper Oil
Sandalwood Oil
Cade Oil
Titanium Dioxide
Benzyl Salicylate
Cinnamal
Citral
Limonene
Alpha-isomethyl ionone
Coumarin
Eugenol
Geraniol
Citronellol
Benzyl Benzoate
Farnesol
Linalool
Colour 42090

It's still nice, but not as rich or complex as it used to be... It's much more floral than it used to be and that smoky dirty incense-type element is still there but... I miss the melon.

I do feel pretty disappointed

Flowerwood

My first experience of Breath of god was on a soaked paper strip in a Lush shop. The smell struck me as, in a way interesting, but too much and too messy. Bringing the strip out on the street leaving all the olfactive noise in the shop behind did not help much, the scent on the strip still overloaded my senses.

I left the strip on a shelf in the hallway, and for some reason, every time I passed by I just had to take a sniff. While the complex fragrance very slowly became less intense it also became more and more irresistible. After returning to the store a couple of times, sampling it on my forearm, I was stuck.

To me Breath of god has an astonishing complexity. In most cases when I encounter a new fragrance for the first time I immediately associate it with a few notes, a general accord, specific memories, colors or fantasies. Facing Breath of God none of these associations appears to me. The scent is complex yet unified, and for me it takes time and effort to identify the different notes. The first to take a step forward is incense against a darker background of vetiver. Sandalwood and cedar contributes with a friendly and familiar atmosphere. To me I think the Juniper, probably supported by Grapefruit and Jasmine, is an important factor behind the complexity and the healthy puzzlement created by BoG.

Breath of god asks many questions but provides no answers. Thus it becomes a bewildering and slightly confusing scent, but at the same time the open questions stimulate creativity and become just enough provocative, both to myself and for my surroundings.

gayleflorence

I was so excited to try this at a Lush store. Had to scrub it off right away. Horrible stale ashtray smell!!! I was so disappointed since it sounded so wonderful and intriguing.

shushkin

What an interesting fragrance. It does smell a bit minty on the opening but it no sooner appears and then its gone. It really reminds me more of wormwood or absinthe. It feels very dry and aromatic. ive tried a few Lush fragrances now and this is a winner for me. I find the soft melon note extraordinary sitting along incense and wood notes. It fades quite a bit over the first half. It transports me to a woodland dominated by conifers in the middle of summer when everything is dry and waiting to be quenched by rain. The juniper, incense and cedar definitely dominate all the way through. Definitely a unisex fragrance. I think Ive found a new love. Me and the oh can share it. Not bad longevity and the sillage is moderate.

Merchant of Doom

If Tom Ford went on a hippy dope-smoking bender, AFTER a big medium-rare steak in a classic New York steakhouse with wood paneled leather booths and a quick cigar first....this is how he'd smell about 3AM.

I love it...at this price point you can't find anything this masculine, complex and dreamy. I love reading the reviews about women who love the scent as well because i can definitely see some feminine elements in this that i'm prone to in a scent as well.

A well done cologne for those who like a heavy, woody, spicy scent with some floral notes (which i'd say is Neroli)...think Tuscan Leather with some Neroli Portofino and you've nearly approximated how this feels to me, at less than 60 bucks -- which is really special.

Little Prince

Originally made for “B Never Too Busy To Be Beautiful” Breath of God is perhaps Simon Constantine’s greatest achievement. Actually it progressed from the fruity ozonic Inahle blended with the smoky earthy Exhale.
I have fleetingly smelled the parts but Breath of God surprised me. The fragrance cleverly utilizes a lean, bizzare accord of smoky, dry almost leathery vetiver and ozonic (violet, ionones) florals (rose, ylang) on a rich complex base of balsamic fruity cedarwood with a touch of musk. All this preluded by a transparent fresh top of citrus fruits that smell like Roudnitska’s decadent melon. The outcome smells like chewing a fruit gum while standing on a beach with the air of cypress forest floor, burned wood, rotten fruit and ozone clearing your lungs.
Breath of God has an unworldly feel in the same motif of Goutal’s eccentric Vetiver and its treatment of vetiver is almost identical. Like the latter it carries a dreamlike air of mystery; a short of deep, eerie electric charge which at once feels thrilling and dangerous. Ballsy, extremely distinctive, utterly surreal.

assemblyize

The first time I walked into Lush, I was just trying to pass time. I wandered about the small section of fragrances, and the only one that stood out to me was Breath of God.

I'm honestly still not sure whether it stood out in a good or bad way... but I ended up buying the solid version of this.

I like about 80% of this scent, and despise the other 20%. I think part of it just reacts badly with my chemistry. Nevertheless, I do tend to wear this every now and then.

It has a sharp incense/smoke opening, middle, and dry-down. I get a bit of "spice" from what I assume is the juniper and pepper. On me, I can't find ANY melon, and I wish I could. I do get a powdery/soapy neroli scent paired with the incense.

It's a very dominant fragrance, and it does remind me of some of the imagery given. I just keep it around because there's something in it I enjoy a bit too much.

Planet_X

Holy smoke!
Charcoal, on which was poured sticky melon juice. *coughing*
It is like some furious awakening of Hindu Goddess Kali, she burned the sinner by one her look, than sat on his ashes and started to eat her melon slices, slurping and turning the rest of the world into minty icicles.
Wear such "action" as a fragrance?.. No, thank you, it is completely revolting note combination, that I wish I would never had chance to put on my skin. Before, the first place in nomination of most horrible things I sampled, belonged to Salamanca of Olympic Orchids(along with few others of same brand), now I see, that Salamanca was actually not that bad, it moved on second position even.
*lovingly stroking the bottle of "Black" of CdG, in hope it will make THIS..disappear*

Ayper

The first time I sampled this, I thought, "oh, HEAVENS above, yuck! Why, for the love of all things good and right in the world, would anyone create or wear this?" It was this UNHOLY medicinal concoction that made my nose burn.

However!! I have since sampled it on the back of my hand twice, because for some reason I just keep going back to it... probably because it seemed so UNGODLY that I just had to try it and see what the HELL was going on. Well now I am in love. How this happened I will never know, but once you let it sit for a while it transforms (on me, anyway) into this fabulously smoky, woody, spicy unisex goodness. It's almost intoxicating.

The lady at the store told me that the guys who got the idea for this scent wanted it to represent one note from each religious place/temple/church they'd been to during their many travels... and HOLY moly, this is DIVINE.

I feel like it transforms me into this sensual woodland GODDESS.

Yes, I like this. I like this very much.

She_Wolf

Grey smoke backed by a metallic sweetness of cantaloupe and mint chewing gum. It's kind of a hospital smell, like embalming fluid and bone ash and some spray used to cover up the smell of death.

It's very very strange, and I'm totally into it! I never imagined that a cade oil/cantaloupe accord would be my (or anyone's) jam, but somehow, this stuff works.

Many thanks to nexangelus and ParfumAmour for the recommendation!

Shimoldeam

This has every fragrance note that I usually love, but is without a doubt the vilest scent I have ever sampled. You get your money's worth though - I've scrubbed myself three times now and can't get rid of it!

krisa.kola

This is probably the most complex and multidimensional fragrance I've ever encountered, ok, except maybe Shalimar. I understand perfectly why it's easy to hate it, it has this harsh presence (I'm still thinking cedar! but I can also agree with one reviewer who mentioned Cabochard by Gres, definitely has something similiar..and I LOATHE Cabochard) but also is enchanting, surreal, I can't pull my nose away from my forearm when I'm wearing it.
It's dark, earthy, but has a sweet/fresh facet to it, and like many noted, changes a lot. I can't say I smell melon, but it's something fruity there, although I'd say the sweetnes is coming from ylangylang which I can smell clearly most of the time. Glorious!
My fragrance knowledge stems from usage/sniffing of natural essential oils (even made a few of mw own "perfumes"!) and I will always claim natural oils overall still win against mostly synthetic smells. This is a great example.
Also, I don't usually say something is for one or other season, but this is definitely pure "winter"

LeonieB

three distinct and distinctive phases to this one:
Phase 1: harsh hippy
Phase 2: camphoric medicine
Phase 3: gentlemen's cologne.

How do they do it? Why do they do it?

Konga5000

I have never seen so many contrasting love/hate reviews for a scent before !

I first sampled Breath Of God in one of LUSH's stores (I'm in the USA). I thought "interesting". (This week - I got a small bottle for Christmas from a friend.)

"Interesting" is what they say when they look at your abstract painting and can't make heads or tails of it.

"Interesting" is what they say when you wear red nail polish with a green dress.

"Interesting" is what they say when you add lemon extract to your chocolate chip cookies.

So yeah; Webster's Dictionary defines Lush's Breath of God as: "to make a mess; to drop the test- tube ; to sour the stew".

I agree with but one other poster on here who mentions , ahem, a "horse stable & hay". Yikes. (The dry-down on this is putrid I might add.)

As with all of Lush's GORILLA scents: DO NOT BLIND BUY. NOT FOR EVERYONE.

This one however may be for no one.

LUSH used to make their fragrances in different strengths, depending on the size of bottle you bought. This has changed since they merged the perfumes with the store part of the business. The solid version is still lighter than the liquid but they seem to make only the one strength now. I don't know where it comes on the scale of EDT, EDP and so on, but some people think it's stronger than their old version, while others think it's lighter, so I'm guessing at EDP. Hope that is helpful, if you are wondering how one fragrance can be so many things. (Although it's still pretty remarkable stuff.)

grug

Very smokey and medicinal to start - a bit like burnt peet mixed with calamine lotion. Very interesting. It then begins to morph and the sweet florals and melon come into play along with some woods. The smell itself really depends on how closely you smell it - get your nose into it and the medicinal vibe remains. Rely on wafts of sillage and it's much smoother and has a balsamic note. Two other fragrances it reminds me of, not due to being super close, but due the vibe, is Kouros Tattoo in the earlier stages, which i put down to the mix of wodds, incense and calone, and Armani Pour homme in the deeper drydown due to the balsamic and wood notes. Definitely try before you buy. But do try if any of the above sounds like something you'd like.

putri.daskian

This scent is truly multi-faceted, in that it has numerous notes fighting to surface all the time, and nobody wins (or everybody wins?) It's a different scent every time, on different parts of the skin, changing every ten minutes. The other day it was extremely humid and it took form of the sandalwood cologne my father wears–it's not horrible at all, but kind of unimpressive. During colder, dryer situation, the lightness of melon and musk and maybe a bit of rose come up. I love it indoors, but once it turns to the dark side–and by that I mean hot, humid, sweaty–it's just meh.

Walking Unicorn

Freshly cut cedar, Asian incense sticks and bbq'd melon. The sweetness of the melon becomes more prominent the longer you have it on. I like it better mixed with Imogen Rose. By itself, it's an oddly appealing scent but 3 hours later it smells like men's after shave.

Mukuro

This is soooo not what I expected! I don't get any melon/ incense at all. All I get is very strong synthetic medicinal(almost like some sort of traditional chinese medicine) and unpleasant woody note! very disappointed, wish I didn't blind buy the 50ml bottle...Or2

MissLola

Melon lots of sweet melon! Long levity on mine skin is very poor. I had high hopes after reading al the reviews. I have the 10 ml dropper bottle. When I tested in the store it was hard to rub it off, and mine bottle is wash of in a second. Weird. I also prefer a spray bottle because this dropper is difficult to apply.

celeste.stclair

hello everyone!! ive been dying for this perfume and I was wondering a few things..

1) does the solid perfume smell the same as the regular perdfume?

2) I honestly cant find this perfume anywhere and was wondering if someone would be willing to sell me one or give me one?

please PM me of kik me

kik: itsaunicornlol

thank you so so much!

good vibes

alex193

I can see how this is an acquired taste - at first spray, I was wildly allergic to this until maybe 5 hours after the fragrance had settled. Now I smell it on my shirt I was wearing, and the leftover sillage from 3 days ago is absolutely glorious and beautiful. However, if I really bury my nose in it, I get the same headshop-y hippy incense vibe that I dislike and start sneezing again. I'm very impressed at the strength of this juice, and I think people who like incense and rose will really like this. Just let it settle down before really making a determination, and I'd recommend spraying behind your knees or something as to my nose, it's very lovely sillage from a few feet away, but too intense and medicinal up close.

Gigi27

Green, a little smoky, at times just a tad medicinal, not at all spicy, very clean, thoroughly unisex and always appropriate. I have the oil and haven't tried the spray.

I know some people feel it's a wintery scent, but I find it refreshing in the summer, too.

One of the few I'll repurchase after my oil is gone; not because other scents I wear are not more beautiful, but because this one manages to be original and utterly versatile at the same time.

FeelingRisky

Understandably I'm not the only who feels this completely transforms every time i wear it!
This is smokey, medicinal, green, incense-y, floral, minty and citrus-y all in one.
There does not seem to be a solid core focus.
Which; strangely, I like.
This is trans-formative and lovely - perfect for winter and fall.
a transformer and a modern masterpiece. Longevity and Sillage are Beastly.
This is one of my ATF fragrances!
Awesome.

troubadour

Evokes an old church on the mediterranean somewhere, incense mixed with gardens and the sea. The dry smoke is initially sharp, like a campfire. The longevity is excellent.

BOG is my signature winter scent, although I'm not a fan of melon/ozone/calone or tibetan incense. It's less punchy than many eighties heavy-hitting women's perfumes, but too heavy for me in summer.

The comparison to Fahrenheit (also a favourite of mine, when worn by men) is interesting, probably based more on composition (a blend of contrasts with some sharpness) than any individual notes.

ptilda

This is the scent you get when you walk into a horse barn full of stacks of alfalfa bales. It's musty and all about dried hay. I love the scent because it brings me back to my horseback riding days, but I would never wear this on my body.

Kompeito

The signature scent of a dear friend of mine. Unfortunately, I cannot pull it off.

This is a truly intriguing frag that smells completely different on everyone.
On my friend- it's a very balsamic earthy floral, full of vetiver. Very classy and sexy, with a bohemian edge.
On my bf- it's deep, masculine, smoky, and spicy. How can this smell so good and so completely different of men and women?

On me- it's a neroli and rose bouquet being held over a campfire. Just fresh flowers and lots of smoke. None of the depth of this fragrance comes out on me.
Maybe because they run warmer than I do? I'm that person that's always freezing.

The comments about it smelling minty, I saw that when i was smelling it in the bottle. It must be the melon and juniper combo, don't worry that part will fade quickly. It smells so different in the bottle/when you first spray it, very medicinal, so be sure to hold out for the drydown. it gets past the initial stage very quickly and then the true heart of this scent lasts a really long time.
When my friend visits, the scent of Breath of God lingers in our guest room for at least a day.

Heetkin

What the inside of Darth Vaders helmet must smell like.

I imagine...

Overall rating 7/10 (For originality)

atlaseetschristmas

Totally weird yet totally wearable, complex yet focused. Medicinal and smoky yet airy and fruity. It develops dramatically over time, but each time it changes it is just as exciting and interesting as before. Performance is perfect, long lasting and powerfully projecting but not cloying. When I wear this, I feel like a melon god. 10/10

Luna_J

This is based on a paper trial only - will update in future-, but I wanted to comment (because I haven't noticed this in many reviews thus far) that this smells powerfully of Lapsang Souchong tea. I used to drink this habitually as a teenager, and it is an unmistakeable, transportive aroma with an almost physical presence. For the uninitiated, this is a smoked tea leaf (burnt pine needles are involved), but also one with fruity, waxy, oleos undertones. If you sniff BOG and think you are smelling burnt plastic or a thunderstorm on the horizon, relax it's just tea, miraculously mimicked (I guess) by smoky vetiver and sweetish, plummy cedar, and whatever is pretending to be sandalwood here. I still haven't made up my mind about wanting to smell like this all of the time (it is incredibly long lasting, judging from the paper on my bedside table, which slightly out-chimes an Antaeus sample right nearby), but the mixture of smoky, fruity, comforting and ozonic is certainly worth pondering, especially given the strange things that are being done with ozonic notes at the more experimental fringe of designer fragrances these days (Balenciaga B or Narciso Rodriguez for example).

When I think about the scents that got my attention in my youth (Grey Flannel in the 80's, Fahrenheit in the 90's), they were - like this - a little inhuman.

Gingercat77

I was in Lush today and the sales assistant sprayed some of this on to the warm crease of her elbow and offered me a sniff. Well, she might as well have punched me square between the eyes! I literally reeled backwards and my head swam for a second!!! My eyes watered and i coughed and seriously thought i was going to have an asthma attack.

This stuff should have a biohazard warning on it!!!! We are talking smelling salts msterial here. Literally screaming-in-your-face stuff.
Now i am no wallflower when it comes to perfumes. Im right up there with the Poisons, Muglers, etc and i LOVE a good self respecting 'fume that can pack a punch and clear a room in thirty seconds or less. But that's all well and good when the notes COMBINE together in a pleasing symphony of notes.
Sadly, this smells nothing like breath from heaven. Granted i only got the initial nuclear blast of the top notes ( i didnt stick around for the drydown!) but what i got was a pretty vile slap in the face of discordant, pungent, unpleasant notes that were anything but heavenly im afraid! And the price?!!! I could buy toilet cleaner with a less offensive aroma.

sebeck666

the openning is for me just... repulsive. very synthetic, loud, rough and has a note of toillet cleaner. the single notes are ok, but together it sounds like false chord... the only thing i like in this fragrance is the drydown... unfotunatly not for me.

gedlive

Maybe Gorilla perfumes take you to another place and time. I smelled in the opening, something I hadn't smelled in 40 years. The smell of a new baseball glove, leathery.

I got caught up in the hype of Lush perfumes. I liked the idea of natural perfumery, without synthetic notes.

I tried my first Gorilla perfume, Breath of god. It smells ok, but not like a serious perfume, very shallow. I heard the dropper bottle which I have is in a base of Jojoba oil, well thats all it smells like, a light teatree oil, eucalyptus/ minty smell, not much more realy. Maybe they forgot to put the notes in mine? It's kind of kids stuff fragrance. Kind of amaturish concoctions.

I' m getting some melon now in the drydown, end phase of the fragrance progression.

These have been some honest dissjointed first impressions. To give a short summary of what BOG smells like; after the strong initial blast, I get a herbal fresh minty eucalyptus like accord with a melon fruitiness. A bit medecinal, in a nice way.

I absolutely love Breath Of God, I think it is a beautiful scent that reminds me of nature, specifically the ocean. Most of the scents I wear are light and girly but this is the exception; in fact it is the complete opposite as it's heavy and masculine. I do not get any sugar or food notes when I smell this, and I've had my solid perfume for about two years now. The notes I usually get are citrus, pine, seawater, and smoke. A wonderful scent but definitely not for everyone.

The God of Lush must have had a heavy meal and is taking a nap with a full belly and forgot to brush his teeth.

This was my first impression on BoG. Later a stale moathball smell came out.
It should be balsamic but it smells like old canphor balls instead.
I'm a little envious of tjose who smell a good balsamic scent here. I don't.

If anything, Breath of God is interesting. For me, it was a fun experience.

I've heard both ends of the tale for this fragrance, so when my girlfriend and I were at the mall, I had to give myself a couple of sprays on the wrist. She immediately cringed and separated herself from my immediate vicinity, claiming that I smelled like something burning. That was the one thing that we agreed on. For my nose, it was a mixture of Bacos bacon bits (are those still around?), burnt rubber, and ashes. Not the most pleasant scent, as you can imagine. It's surprising to see all of the notes listed here, but perhaps, I simply do not possess the proper chemistry for this Lush creation.

The longevity and sillage of this fragrance were excellent! The rest of the shopping trip was filled with my laughter as I waved my wrists around my girlfriend while she yelled at me to stop. :D

Lana148

Oh boy, God must have pretty bad breath the day they checked him to make this fragrance.

This is awful. I tried Dirty from this line yesterday and didn't mind it - but this? Smells like sugary burnt rubber. Sorry!

I really like it, I like the balsamic notes (that remind me of the red version of tiger balsam), I love the cedarwood and the incense, and the smokyness. I do not really smell any melon...I tried it in the shop on paper, sniffed the paper multiple times and fell in love.
So I decided to buy the solid version to take with me in travel....solid perfumes are very handy for that. My usual perfume is not so "travel friendly".
However, I discovered that I am allergic to one of the components, it is not the first time a fragranced product does that...and my wrist and neck are still itchy and red after a few days. And a solid perfume is a bit more difficult to put only on clothes, especially a blue one. Annoyed.

Edit: just come back from Thailand and noticed the local habit of carrying little sniffing containers of essential oils, mainly menthol or something balsamic....it is a good way to refresh your mind in the sultry weather, and recover from the occasional nasty smell, sewage or similar.
This perfume reminds me a lot of those little dispensers, "minty and balsamic", with a touch if incense. Now it reminds me of Thailand ;-).
I keep my "breath of god" little aluminium pot with me during my train commute, even if I can't put it on my skin is handy to have something nice smelling in the train, against offensive smells of any kind. A dab on my sleeve, or scarf, is a lifesaver...

I have the small spray and the solid perfume, I use the solid perfume on the ends of my hair, I really wanted to like this but its meh on me. I get smoke and more smoke on me, no ozonic aspect, I use it occasionally and with a light hand. I think this would suit a man, maybe my nose will change when the weather is cooler??

I really wanted to like this.

God kinda needs a tic tac.

Smells like He has been trying to save folks in a burning automotive shop, while gargling melon body wash.

Based on His breath He is clearly a multi-tasker.

Omnipresence makes for some very interesting breath.

If anyone has a sample of this they're interested in selling, let me know. I'm trying to get almost all of the Lush perfume. pM me thanks!

SmellieKat

Breath of God is all ozone, lighning and wet earth...a dark, rainy day captured in perfume. Perfectly weird.

I am utterly surprised to read so many reviewers stating this is a very masculine scent. To me, it is extremely feminine, and here's why: I've lived in India for a few years and became friends with a lovely and very elegant young muslim lady. She wore a very powerful fragrance that served as a perfect complement to her beauty. Breath of God reminds of that friend's scent. She even gave me a little bottle with that oil in it at the time, and I wore it to the last drop. On my skin, it developed a bit differently but I absolutely adored it. The sandalwood gets very intense on my skin, and I love that. It is indeed very strong, so I'd recommend no more than a drop in one wrist (and then rub it to the other). I'm in love with this one, really.

Littlegrassstraw

Skimming reviews here makes me puzzled... I was gonna say: A nice, comforting, slightly spicy - perhaps cardamom - cookie scent. But too foodie for me. Wow, I can't believe how different my experience is from other reviewers! Sounds like a totally different perfume. I wonder where all those notes went. Mind you, I tested it in the heavy smelling lush shop and it was the SOLID perfume. That brings me to something I didn't like about it: the colour (blue) makes it rather unsuitable for application, especially on exposed skin, and it could possibly stain light coloured clothes. If you find the liquid perfume too strong, maybe try this but expect to get a bit blue!

Smells like smoke, melon, ashes, and mint like from toothpaste. This fragrance is very strong. I suggest only wearing this in winter. Very manly fragrance can't see a woman wearing. I rarely say a fragrance is gender specific but Breath of God is straight masculine. I like it. Got a 9ml bottle that would last forever for me. My sister says it smells like if you caught wind and put it in a bottle. 7/10.

This is an effervescent, woody, smoky, incense-y kind of smell with a hint of green and something that smells almost like mint in the background. I also get a hint of the bathbomb section in Lush stores. Yes, there's a LOT going on here!

I have the solid version of this at the moment, but have had the spray in the past (until it leaked everywhere).

This smells like an incense shop in a dark basement on a rainy spring day burning sandalwood incense inside. The base is undeniably dank and woody but there's a slightly sweet, mysterious quality as well.

This is a bold fragrance and on my skin, the Lush-y, chalky bathbomb scent is more pronounced than it is out of the bottle, but it keeps it's dark, woody quality as well. On me, it smells more masculine than feminine. I like it.

Eloquaint

One might fairly wonder what God has been eating.

I have a sample of the EDT, not the solid. I smelled the solid in the store once and, possibly because of Lush store fragrance overload, I couldn't make heads or tails of it. Everything kinda smelled like everything, if you know what I mean.

But the EDT...The first thing that hit me was a simultaneous smack of mint and melon. Then they stopped happening at the same time and for a couple of minutes the perfume veered back and forth between minty toothpaste (mint with a touch of chalk) and cleanly, pinkly melon. After a while the melon won out, but then all of a sudden the mint was back, but smelling woody-floral. What the deuce? And then just as fast the smell turned into cedar.

Over the next two hours the cedar smell developed a sandalwood smoothness and a salty pong, both of which were very pleasant. And after about four hours, during which I overheated doing a bunch of housework, it all wound down into a very classic-fougere smell.

We have another weirdo from Lush, Gentle Readers. I respect it greatly, but I'm not sure if I need to buy it. I was at Lush's website buying Ladyboy within about 15 minutes of finishing my review here...Breath of God is going to take more thought.

valerie.aardahl

This is an interesting one. It's a pretty unusual review for me. Ok, this fragrance is unique. I've never smelled anything like it in a perfume shape. I tested the fragrances randomly when suddenly I found this. I smelled it for a while because it clearly differed from the others. I thought that my fiance must get smell of this and took the blotter paper with me and left. I held this in my hand while I walked and with every step I became more and more dizzy and nauseous. Eventually I had to throw blotter paper in a garbage can and stop and breathe because I was so sick. The next day I was in Lush shop again with my fiance, we tested the perfume again and it gave me the same result.

Therefore, I wonder, are there any others who feel the same about this fragrance? Actually, I think this is fantastic. It is beautiful, exciting and unique fragrance, very creatively made and I actually think the name fits the fragrance. But there is something in it that makes me so sick and I just cant stand it. What is it?

ParfumFetiche

This review is based on a decant. Incense, melon, cedar and vetiver. It's very medicinal but intriguing. Reminds me a bit of The Soft Lawn by Imaginary Authors. Moderate projection and longevity on my skin.

Antares811

Beautiful male scent: highly recommended.

Review of the EDT.
A nice, dry scent well suited for summer wear. The strange combination of smokey incense and an ozonic calone note in Breath of God actually brings to mind lightning and static electricity. An odd pairing, but brilliant and thrilling all the same. I get quite a lot of juniper and pepper as well. Lovely and unisex. One of the best offerings from this house.

This really comes into its own in hot, humid weather (which is hard to come by in the UK). I have the solid balm version and I remember how divine it smelt on me when I was on an Italian city holiday in July, sipping a Campari soda :) I think heat affects the way it melts into the skin, definitely. I also apply it liberally before bed as the incense notes make it very calming. It's very masculine though, and my ex hated it. Oh well!

alicepolice

Toothpaste, juicy melon and smoky, dusty wood. Sounds crazy? It's divine!

This isn't a scent for women who like to draw lines between masculinity and femininity. This is a scent for a woman who embraces them both. That being said, this isn't a scent for macho men, either.

VintageViolet depicted deep, rippled water, surrounded by clouds. As far as scents awaken pictures in my head, this depiction is quite accurate for Breath of God.

Edit. On a note, if you enjoy both Breath of God and Cacharel's Loulou, definitely try mixing them! It. Is. Divine!

VintageViolet_

Not a fan of this on my skin at all. It seems to have no middle notes, just smokey base and top notes. Definately something missing. I have synaesthesia, and experience textures and shapes rather than colours, and to me this scent is rippled deep water with big dark misty fuzzy clouds high above with nothing inbetween.

This does however smell amazing on my friend!

labradorite

This scent is plain attractive. It's too masculine on my skin to wear it on the streets, but God this is the perfume I reach for first when I go to sleep. Breath of God is a special for those evenings when I feel lonely and cannot fall asleep without the boyfriend.
I don't see how this one could be a turn off for anybody. I can't smell any burnt plastic or barbecue or cigarette or ashtray - but probably I'm the lucky person whose skin works well with this fragrance. Gorilla perfumes are usually black horses. You either love them or hate them, but surely you won't stay neutral towards them.
For me, Breath of God smells like a summer night bonfire and sparkles, and swimming in the ocean, and girly drinks, and laying on the wet sand. A must have in my collection, I cannot imagine not buying another bottle when I finish the first one.

houstcs

Burning plastic in a meth house for the first 20 minutes, after that I had a very manly smell that was pretty amazing. If you can stomach the top notes this is a beastly fragrance with plenty to offer. I can smell myself very easily 15 hours later and I like it but the top notes are insane, just insane!

over_caffeine

The smell of wet, mossy stone temples of the far east. This is not a glamorous perfume, but an intellectual fragrance, if that makes sense. Hard to wear, but very interesting. Wet and cold, spices around and incense burning, rain on grass and soil. Breath of God strongly reminds me of our visit to big 11C Hindu/Buddhist temples of Bali and Siem Reap. If you're looking for something that makes you feel sexy, stay away from this. But if you want a fragrance that triggers memories, go ahead and have a spritz.

mashuda

I love this smell. so comforting and I can't explain why. smokey leathery soap.

Lom

The first 15 minutes after you apply this perfume (I have the solid version) are plain awful. It smells like meat on a barbecue with a lot of smoke and rubber surrounding it. I thought to myself: why would anyone buy this thing, let alone produce it?
But after that, the smoke fades away and you are left with a smell that I absolutely love! which is very fresh and soapy but still mysterious and rich with only hints of smoke. I think it's worth waiting the 15 minutes to discover the real essence of this perfume, which is very sweet and weird but also uplifting and relaxing.

ntruitt

Lapsang Souchong. All the way and that's it. This is for the solid perfume and maybe there's a difference. Either way, I'm not smelling incense unless incence is smoked pine tar. I really don't know how I feel about this.

kayqin

This perfume conjures up an entire person for me: a sophisticated young black London man wearing silk and velvet in beautiful tasteful colours, maybe a light blue silk square in the breast pocket of an olive green velvet jacket, carrying a brown leather briefcase and wearing a maroon cashmere scarf and some simple silver jewellery, keeping his childhood faith but, to paraphrase Grayson Perry, "holding his beliefs lightly." Since I have completely invented this man on the basis of beautifully scented men who've walked past me on the street, and since I'm not sophisticated, black, or a man, I don't feel I have the right to wear this scent...

Matt Oldham

At the risk of sounding bitchy I have to say: the people who don't get it should try a little harder. It really is as profound as all of its rave reviews suggest. A lot of people think there's some sort of innate virtue in saying the emperor is naked but they are wrong. It's virtuous only if it's not misplaced, if he's actually naked and not wearing ermine as is the case here. Philistine rather than virtuous.

dubairob

What an astonishing fragrance....This is why perfumery and the creation of new fragrances can be considered high art with all that this entails.

When I first sampled Breath of God in a Lush store I was simply bowled over. It was such a contradictory clash of all that was bright and dark, beautiful and ugly, delicious and repelling, that I simply laughed. Epiphany? Perhaps.

What is certainly clear from Breath of God is that there was no way my reading of the notes could have prepared me for the experience of the fragrance. The notes of incense, cedar, vetiver, sandalwood? Surely these are the stuff of commonplace fragrances. Does the addition of melon (calone) and ylang-ylang - themselves components of both kiddie fragrances and more avant-garde offerings - blow Breath of God into the heavens? I can't tell....

All I can say is that this fragrance - which is at the lower end of niche pricing - has excellent longevity and sillage, and is a fragrance that is, well, astonishing. I would go so far as to say that you owe it yourself to at least try it: you may detest it or love it; you may feel like you are staring at the face of your maker or being grabbed around the throat by a devil....but you won't be left sitting on the fence after the experience.

Highly recommended try.

I'm a man, and when I wear this scent, a lot of people notice it (both women and men). I've gotten some compliments on this one, as the silage is not weak. The scent grew on me and I now tend to like it, while at first I wasn't too impressed with it. It is in my rotation, and I wear it sparingly ;)

debathgate

I thought this scent was the same as that in LT and Ts's perfume guide. Perhaps I am wrong. It sounded intriguing so I sought it out in Lush on a recent trip into town. It reminds me of a combination of aphid spray and strong cleaner. In disbelief I kept sniffing it as we walked around assuming it must improve. It remained steadfastly horrid. It is quite simply the most disgusting thing I have voluntarily sprayed on my skin. Once home I rushed for the scrubbing brush.
