There are so many things I enjoy about this perfume. It reminds me of going to big Italian weddings as a kid and seeing my aunts dressed to the nines, their heels clacking on the dance floor and a cloud of perfume following them wherever they walked. It's comforting.

The smell of rose, sandalwood and sweet berries leaves a feminine scent. It does also remind me of a 40 year old bank manager who is kind to her coworkers, glamorous and wont take crap.

However, I can't smell this perfume up close. When I do, I smell porta potty cleaner. I am not sure if it is the civet or carnations. I've always had a hard time with carnation scent. It's frustrating because it's such a nice enjoyable scent that I can smell on myself. As long as I dont take a hard whiff, I can't notice the porta potty cleaner scent.
After leaving it rest for an hour on my skin, stink does get waaay more mild which I am happy about.

I am not sure if I need to let this macerate longer. I really want to love this !

Roma is definitely unique in my collection but, alas, I'm giving it away to a friend today. I want to like it, but its arid, woody, powdery profile is simply formulated for an older soul. There's too much mint, spice, and (frankly) rot in here for my taste. I could see this suiting a 50-something European woman with dark hair, red lipstiick, and a razor sharp wit. This person is not me.

Aeternitas

Fun fact, which I didn't know until recently: Laura Biagiotti's Roma comes in EDP as well.
I have had the EDT for many years, and that's the one that is popular and widely used.
Out of curiosity, I bought the EDP, so I'm here to do a comparison between the two.

The EDT is my love, my go-to summer fragrance. Luckily, I have never received the notorious cat-pee smell that others get from the mint/currant/grapefruit rush - it's always just been a sharp opening that quickly mellows out into a lush, musky, feathery yet fruity and cheerful blend of notes. It is such a great compliment for hot weather, really. It's a fruity-floral, but sophisticated; not like the modern capri-sun creations.

The EDP is obviously stronger... by a lot, lol. It's as if the notes spray in backwards fashion. Those bottom notes bulldozed me on the first sniff, with the patchouli, musk, and myrrh taking their turns to kick me in the nose. Super animalic and pretty masculine at first! Once that settles and the base notes take the backseat (finally), the florals come out to say hello.
The citrus and other top notes of the EDT be damned... they're hardly present in the EDP, except for a splash of grapefruit.

I prefer the EDT mostly because of my attachment to it as a summer fragrance. The EDP would have me re-evaluating the whole summer thing, haha. Definitely will wear that in the fall or for cooler spring days... unless... UNLESS... someone wants to swap?! Message me. It's 1.7oz, with the box.

this opens with myrrh, amber and citruses, with maybe a hint of carnation and rose. it's warm and a bit spicy. it gets drier and spicy over time, and yes it overwhelmingly reminds me of dune, but it may be a bit heavier, if memory serves? really pretty and spicy, cozy for cool weather.

Missperfume1

This was my mother favourite fragrance. Spicy fragrances were fashionable back then. I can smell powder and spices. Very unique and classic.

Suzanne loves Perfume

I had a bottle of this when l was a young woman someone must have given if to me as l dont remember buying it. I loved it so much l remember a sweet creamy heavenly smell. I wore it all the time until it ran out and tried finding another bottle and couldn't it disappeared from production in.the UK. I always remembered the name of it and thought about its beautiful fragrance in my youth and missed my roma romance.
Now almost 30 years later I'm ahem, cough, cough, much older and with the wonders of the Internet where you can get anything if you look hard enough l took a chance and put it into Ebay and a few bottles popped up l yelped with excitement and got myself a 100ml bottle. These days it smells different to what l remember. I perhaps have long forgotten the spicy citrus grapefruit fresh mint leaves with bergamot blast which honestly l am not a fan of as I'm not a fruity perfume lover but when the middle notes flowers started pushing through the fruity phase l started to like it and then the dry down!!! Now that's the Roma l know and love the friend l missed all these years. The gorgeous vanilla and amber, civet and musk with sandlewood its just beautiful. That's my Roma, a beautiful perfume that starts off zesty and so fresh and spicy it will will take your breath away like it's been bubbling and waiting to burst out of the bottle onto your skin and shouts loud about its presence, but it's all about the dry down with this one. But l I'm pretty sure this modern formulation is much more zest and less creamy vanilla sweet than l remember it, but l can still smell my old Roma in the dry down. I give this a 8/10

I don't get any amber or smoke from this vintage mini - as soon as it went on I got huge reminders of A&F Fierce, which I used to wear in mid 2000s. None of the notes are the same but the male after shave notes are there.

Perfect10Tara

This is just a beautiful scent. It has what I can only describe as a heaviness to it and was a natural successor to the likes of Lou Lou and John Paul Gaultier's Classic. A girl I used to work with called Amy introduced me to it - she was hilarious and we used to have such laughs doing what was the first serious job for us both. We were classy, special, and going places when we wore this!

1988 Vintage Amber-Spicy MYRRH-GRAPEFRUIT-MINT with Sandalwood & Civet. In the first minute or two, before the spray dries I can feel the warm-spicy, aromatic myrrh with its sweet licorice-anise and faint-rubber facets. Once the spray dries and the sillage starts to open up I get the citrus-mint top notes led by pink-grapefruit accented by fresh-spicy & green tones, but the myrrh & amber are already swelling through. As the citrus-mint fades, it transitions to the heart and more floral notes emerge with carnation in front. Rose here shows up more in a rosewood effect, as it mixes with the myrrh & sandalwood. As it's drying down, myrrh & amber deepen with vanilla & sandalwood. Civet & oakmoss pass through the background and add a vintage twist. The overall effect is a vintage amber-myrrh with near-rosewood tones and citrus-mint in the top notes. Reviewers have got it right with the top five rated notes imho: myrrh, grapefruit, amber, mint vanilla. This has excellent performance for year-round wear, but the profile is most appropriate in cooler months. This just gets better with time, both in the bottle and on the skin.

Contrast to Dune Dior:
These are different, and Roma came out 3 year prior to Dune, but there are striking similarities with citrus, amber, sandalwood, oakmoss & vanilla, although Roma doesn't evoke sand in the way that Dune does. Dune had the woody accord more forward, with the addition of aldehydes in the opening & near-cinnamon in the drydown that give a dry, sandy feel. Roma has the citrus and amber accords more forward, but the combination of myrrh-rose-sandalwood in the drydown Roma has some parallels to the Brazilian Rosewood in Dune Both have above average performance that becomes excellent with dark storage after first sprays.

Contrast to Obsession Calvin Klein:
These are different, but there is a similar vintage spicy-amber vibe. Obsession and has a more forward cinnamon-spice, while the citruses in Roma are more forward and the myrrh-rose-sandalwood gives a rosewood illusion. Both have excellent performance.

Contrast to Shalimar EDP Guerlain:
These are different, but again there are similarities with a vintage spicy-amber vibe. Shalimar has more forward vanilla & leather accords, while fresh-spicy green notes are more forward in the top notes of Roma, as well as the rosewood illusion from myrrh-rose-sandalwood.

Overall: gorgeous amber-myrrh with citrus-mint & a rosewood illusion, that has excellent performance. This is a longtime love for me. Enjoy!

I just don’t know what to think about this…
I hated it at first because to me this smells like bitter grapefruit seed perfume for old lady. For some reason I find this perfume somewhat captivating and I couldn’t get rid of it.
Also I love this bottle.

amls

I've read the comments describing this scent as a summer in old, stone ancient city and I couldn't have imagined how it is possible to show someting like that in a perfume. And now when I have my own bottle, I get it.

It is summer afternoon in Italy. Your skin is hot after hours of exploring the ancient city of Rome. Tired, you've found a small cafe in a shadow of a huge stone church. You've ordered a fizzy grapefruit juice to cool yourself. There aren't many tourists here, the place is hidden, not the most popular. You drink your grapefruit and contemplate about the history of the place you are in. The mossyness of old cold stone walls mixes with juicyness of grapefruit and mint and with sun beams dancing on a street. Finally, since morning, you've found some peacefull place to rest.

I don't tend to use Roma often. But when I do, it provokes me to reflection. I would say it's quite a mature, elegant and vintage scent. Unfortunatelly I doesn't last on me long - in summer max 3-4 hours. Maybe the performance will increase in autumn, I hope in lower temperatures it will smell as good as it smells in summer.

Annemarie

After buying a bottle of Roma Uomo I realise why I find the women's version unsatisfying. She's lovely but passive. After a crisp opening she has little left to say.

Indeed she's not expected to say anything. Uomo is similarly elegant and comfortable, but his astringent grapefruit and woody notes last all the way through and make the fragrance much more interesting. Uomo is out doing things in the world. Roma is at home changing the water in the vases and plumping up the scatter cushions, awaiting his return.

Adding: perhaps I was a bit mean with this review. I'm wearing a spritz right now and noticing how smooth Roma is after she settles. Soothing.

violinorama

I love the mint in the opening so I want to spray it all the time. I'm one of those who think drydown it looks like Dune.

misya

I've just found this fragrance while in Buenos Aires, a small vintage mini being sold at an artisan fair. Beautiful, minty and fresh scent that just opens your throat is a wonderful way. I almost don't want to use it at all! I'd love to experience the drydown, but since it's a dabber bottle at half full, I honestly just want to preserve it. What a wonderful find!

Tinabill

Glorious fresh floriental 🥰😍
Florientals are my favorite fragrance genre for autumn/winter, white florals for spring and fresh citruses and greens for summer.
Roma strikes a brilliant balance between being both a fresh and floriental fragrance, rendering it both unique and versatile almost year round for me.
Everything about Roma is genius from the relevant notes to the temple-column bottle to the marbelled ancient looking box. It truly transports you to some ancient stone street in Rome.
You’re strolling the streets in the early morning. The cool air fills your nose with the aroma of some nearby citrus orchards, the mint planted in most window sills, and the flowers on both sides of the streets. The mild smell of incense and myrrh waft from a small chapel a few blocks away. You open your arms wide and inhale deeply as a wide smile lights up your face. The moment is engraved in your memory and so is the fragrance.
A masterpiece 🥰

Nothing reminds me of the old classic Roma.Reformulation is a disappointment

sunglow

Roma has a slight similarity to Weekend By Burberry with more punch. Awesome for winter to spring & late summer to fall but I know I'll wear this year round.

Laoire

I purchased Roma, Venetiza and Laura from this house years ago and I loved them all. I remember Roma being a very strong fragrance as was Venetiza. I purchased it again recently just for nostalgia and it is a pale shadow of its former self, the dna is there, but it is a lot more tamed down and doesn't last as long as I remember it. It is pretty but fleeting. It smells nothing like Dune I might add.

Kinga_

Love love love! This is just sooo good for being so cheap.
I can definitely see how people compare this to Must de Cartier or Dior Dune. Roma smells quite like a combo of those two. I strongly prefer Dune, but this one really is great too.

Salkavalka

You might want to try layering Roma with Halston Classic. They complement each other ever so well! They share the same dna, but Halston adds a little depth to Roma and Roma adds a little sweetness to Halston. 👌

Pixied0ll

I have a love hate relationship with this scent. There’s just something I really don’t like about it that keeps me from wearing it but the opening notes smell great to me. The background notes just smell kinda musty and like mothballs to me.

grapefruit352

Too fruity, too acid for me. Opening is strong, then it is still strong for awhile, but I do not enjoy it. Smells like mix of maracuja with lemon fruit juice.

Gyps

Such a beautiful scent that opens up nice and strong. Unfortunately on my skin it doesn’t last 😞
EDT is just not strong enough for me. It’s well blended and the first sprays are absolutely gorgeous.

xAVM

Fresh, clean and spicy. Amazing opening. But the dry down has a slight manure scent (on skin) haha. Will have to try a proper day wear, but initially I do like it. Would love to do more research seeing that it was a cult classic.

klein_gluck

I absolutely love this scent. Haven't tried earlier versions, but the modern one starts green and fresh, later it becomes warm and woody, lasts well, really elegant, unusual, and happy scent.

ViouAmara

So minty, I’d have never guessed. Than it becomes citric, crushed lemon candies, fanta orange can, on a cloudy myrrh and dry amber base. But mint never disappears totally from the game, adding something fresh and, yes, a bit medicinal but very interesting.

DariaFrancesca74

Iconic Italian commercial fragrance of the late 80s. Roma by Laura Biagiotti, net of the various and inevitable reformulations of the last 34 years, maintains its dignity as an ultra-feminine amber / floral fragrance. At the juste pulvérisé the citrus and fresh notes of mint emerge clearly and the olfactory evolution of magically floral makes: a complete bouquet where the hyacinth emerges solemnly, framed by the purity of white jasmine and lily of the valley flowers and the decisive notes of carnation and rose. When dry down, the fragrance becomes amber, enveloping, sweet, sensual, rich in seductive and persuasive nuances of great impact. Roma is a fabulous fragrance, a pleasant non-invasive Sillage with good persistence.

Compositeur

It's a misnomer... It should be called Moroccan Mint Tea!
I used to like it a lot.

PLMc

I whole heartedly agree with Mc1995.... this is Dune Summer!

Mc1995

Absolutely gorgeous, warm and resinous while the mint gives it a freshness. The notes list is very nice. I don’t detect any distinctive florals but they are there. Very well blended. This is a more summery smelling version of Christian Dior Dune, which is another luxurious fragrance itself, a bit more woodsy where as this goes more resinous/ floral mint. Both worth owning. And they are somehow associated with summer, some of the only warm resinous fragrances that can work in heat, but they really will come alive in fall/winter climate. I get the CK Obsession(a signature of mine) comparisons as it’s a warm spicy fragrance but they don’t smell alike to me. Just sprayed it on my arm for the first time in a while and I’m reminded of Dior Hypnotic Poison now. Also, you can’t beat the price this goes for. Amazing value for a niche quality fragrance.

Opalescence

I recently got a sample of Roma from STC and loved it. It's like a spring-summer version of Shalimar, which I find difficult to wear in the heat. So, once my 2ml sample ran out, I bought a small bottle. But the new bottle I have is a pale shadow in comparison to my sample, which must have been the original formulation (it was marked "retro" on the STC website). It was strong - I only wore 1-2 sprays, as opposed to 5 or so from my bottle of the new formulation. I'll still wear and enjoy it, but I am disappointed that it's changed so dramatically.

LZed

This is one of the few perfumes that gives me a brief scent vacation. The combination of bitter citrus and mint over incense, amber, and vanilla evokes sunshine on mossy marble churches. In my mind's eye, I can absolutely see what they were going for here: it's that feeling you get when you walk out of a shadowy cool old marble church and squint in the bright Mediterranean daylight. The opening is blended so it presents as a cool refreshing aromatic accord and the warmer base simmers through. The cold/warm contrast is both bracing and cozy while the florals are barely a whisper in the distance. The drydown is a Shalimar-esque powdery slightly leathery vanilla.

The latest version feels lighter and sits closer to the skin than what I remember (oh, I miss you, overdone 80s potency in all your civety skanky glory) but the essence is there. It is perfectly representative of sweater-weather spring as the cold damp weather gives way to warmth and sunshine.

chRowan73

I went through a bottle of Roma in the 1990’s. The fragrance always felt like it wrapped me in a warm, amber-vanilla hug when I applied it. I have chased this scent for a number of years, never finding it. Now I hear it has been re-released, but not the same. sigh.

Flashwitt

(after reading other reviews,) Oh the MINT! I had forgotten that splendid aspect!

Flashwitt

I didn't realize it had been re-released, but I loved it in its first run. Such an intricate scent, its dry-down was one of the most elaborate scent-journies I think I've ever experienced. Though not at all a similar scent, it does remind me somewhat of Donna Karan's (original) Chaos, in the evocative way the scents evolved, beginning with a springy, citrus brightness, and spiraling through heady cyprus, almost juniper, to finally settle into dark, quiet musk of civet and amber. Gorgeous. (But so expensive!)

MrsMRe

I'm glad to know I'm not alone in being horrified by the reformulation. In the late 80s it was a breezier sister to the era's beasts like Opium, K de Krizia, KL, Fendi, and Obsession--ambery, spicy, complex, and sophisticated-sexy, the smell of Italian fashion runway shows. I remember thinking that it was cooler and more wearable year-round with its faint air of Italian cypress trees. My sister sent me a bottle of the new version and I was shocked by a blast of anise/licorice that lasted through the drydown. The original DNA is in there, but it feels far away. Another lost and lamented beauty.

faevert42

The rest of the world may not be familiar with the cult status this fragrance was enjoying in Europe in the 1990s, together with other Biagiotti creations. Before it was reformulated, this was a truly unique, warm ambery scent with an aromatic opening and some animalic components to it. This opening with mint and citrus rounded up with some black currant is truly unforgettable and it only gets better with its sweet, resinous drydown. The new Roma still has that DNA, but I find the new version of Roma slightly sharper in the opening and a little less complex in the drydown. Clearly, the civet has been removed from the reformulation.

Roma is an ode to Renaissance Italy, opulent, rich and refreshing. I would say it was ahead of its time, but many old fragrances were so much better than what we get today. I wish the quality and originality of the designer frags was on point now as it was in the 1990s.

ScentedPlaza

On my skin I get a great scent projection with only 1 spray. To me this is quite a serious scent, maybe it's the name "Roma", but I can really feel the history, the aristocracy in it. On my skin it's mostly myrrh, chamomile, fresh mint, bitter dried citrus peels, carnation, also lavender and a little bit of vanilla. It gets sweeter over time, but only slightly. This perfume has some similarities with Obsession by Ck. "Roma" is very unisex, office appropriate.
Edit: Got Roma out from the "winter storage" cupboards, put on my vanity for summer easy grab and boy it came alive! Now, the harshness is gone & I can properly enjoy the chic vanilla note together with the myrrh and refreshing mint.

kiaoi

Roma is a beautiful fragrance, just like the city it describes. As soon as I spray it on my skin, it’s Spring in Rome, I feel flowers mainly, like walking through an open air market selling bouquets of flowers. Then comes Summer, with the fruit juicy notes, they make me think of a gelato eaten while seated in a sunny piazza. The notes then change to deep, warm ones that make me feel like I am in Piazza Navona, eating warm chestnuts on a cold Fall or Winter day. I believe that the best perfumes are the ones evocative of memories and sensations and this one is spot on for me, a great creation and a great tribute to the eternal city.

Miasha

I have given a very enthusiastic review of this before. And it is still very nice - but not as special as I thought... because now I realize it is simply the exact civet concoction that is Shalimar. Plus grapefruit and mint. No more. And since I discovered that, I can't shake it...

massimilianoinquieto

d_silent_one

Oh my God, I am in love! From the very first sniff I fell for this marvelous perfume. To me, this is like if you took an 80's perfume but made it for modern times. This has the powerful status of the 80's statement fragrances, but with the modern freshness of today's perfumes. A true masterpiece!

iris_iris

Can anyone change the notes on this perfume? It's a mess! You didn't even mention lavender and chamomile which go strong and more importantly are mentioned officially by the brand. There is also no hiacynth in it according to official info. Pls change it, the notes here are highly misleading!

Official LB site (laurabiagiottiparfums.com/en/womens-perfume/roma) mentiones these notes:

Blackcurrant

Interesting one. Spicy, minty, ambery and carnations. I don't think it's out of fashion and I might get a new bottle

Does it smell like dune ?

cococonut

Love at the first sniff! Blind buy, let me tell you. I couldn't decide between two perfumes in the store, but my intuition was telling me to go for this one and I have no regrets. I was afraid it might smell a bit old-fashioned and well.. maybe it kinda does, but it doesn't mean that it's not absolutely beautiful.

Update: Actually, I don't think it smells old fashioned. But what is most fascinating about this perfume is that it has everything - it's fresh yet sweet, spicy but powdery at the same time. I'm so glad I bought it 😊

louiee

OMG… years since I bought and used this.
I was 11 years old when this one was launched…a bit to young to truly appreciate it.
I remember wearing it in my teenage years thinking it was good.

Now at age 44 I´m totally and utterly in love. This reminds me of obsession in a very good way.
Spicy, fresh , aromatic and complex. Heavy without beeing overwhelming. Well blended and perfect for the cooler months.

You get a lot for your money in this one. Bottle is nineties and I love it as it evokes memories for me. Perfection in my opinion.

Feminine classic for all occasions.
Monstrous silage and longevity.

Yes Malena

I sprayed this on this morning, for my child's first day back at school. A beautiful, dry and sunny, breezy 68F-degree day. She said, "I smell mint. I like it." Roma was beautiful outside and in, though everyone was masked. No one was paying attention to my perfume; it was just for my family and me. The excitement and fear, the optimism and the grief of parting, they were all supported and celebrated here in this smell. Makes me think of the Strength card, in Tarot, where we are perfectly balancing our instinctual side with our better angels, and we are upheld in trust and optimism. However, if anyone should cross us, we know what to do! I love Roma. I forgot to take photographs today, but I will have the perfume memory.

Nahema973

masako_30

Roma.
I had never come close to this perfume. And the reasons are unknown to me.
Worn by someone I think I have never perceived it, even in passing by chance, perhaps at the time I was not attracted to perfume world.
Rome, the adored capital.
Roma, the magic potion perfume, I love the drydown.
The bottle, of an infinite beauty, I think will be much more beautiful emptied of its liquid contents, and I wonder if one day they will modify the cap, perhaps in marble or granite. I'd love to.
I decided to have it to delight myself and sink into its base notes, a twilight with a warm and slightly balsamic essence.
Awesome drydown.
The opening bergamot smooths out its sharp, nearly chemical sides on my skin as temperature rises. Probably because it's blended with hiacynth and lily-of-the-valley, it takes a little time before it melts. Then it's a magic, a delight.
Roma does not like my night out and coolness. But summer heat, oh well, it does, and as usual this is my strictly personal judgment.

dana.kalnina

Roma is one of my top ten most favorite parfums of all time, it is indeed timeless classic, seductive and extraordinary! I had it when it came out in 1988 as one of my first perfumes and I still am captivated by it's magic. If you want to explore notes and find out who made this unique perfume, please go to laurabiagiottiparfums.com, as the notes presented here by fragrantica unfortunately are far from correct. On me Roma opens with a blast of bitter citruses and noticable thyme notes, a little bit covered in blackcurrant and some sweetness of red fruit. After a while there enters the accord of flowers and herbs - I hear tuberose, lavanda and chamomile. The balsamic, sweet and powdery base accord is heard throughout performance, at the beginning somewhere backstage but as the perfume starts to warm on my skin, it comes more and more forward! I love this perfume in all seasons, but especially in cloudy, misty or rainy summer days, nostalgic, windy autumn days and winter days in advent of celebration!

Dianaoud

What can I add that’s not already been said about this classy scent. Timeless, elegant and sophisticated. Never goes out of style.

Danstern

I love this fragrance on my girl. It's very elegant and classy.
I think it works good on young professional woman and mature women too.
Easily my favorite fragrance for woman.

LaContessina

I remember when this perfume was first issued, late eighties, and I was a teenager.
At that time, i loved it. It was something very different and new from what we were used to smell (Poison, Lolou, Giorgio, Fendi, Missoni, Krizia).
Believe me, it was way stronger and impressive compared to the version available today. That, by the way, doesn't entice me a bit. Probably my tastes changed.
Roma is a powdery scent. Amber and myhrr and musk are the trailblazers, you can smell the flowers and a hint of freshness just at the very beginning. But it's really a warm, powdery scent. It's now considered a classic, and it is.
It opened up the way (think: end of the eighties...the new trend developed beginning the nineties) to the huge trend of powdery perfumes that replaced the powerhouse frags we had at the time. Roma was really a new concept, a new tide coming. For that reason, it deserves its place in the history of perfume.

After seeing a documentary about Biagiotti House where the story of this perfume was also explained, I convinced myself to get it. Although I was a bit afraid, because I remembered smelling it as a child and hating it, I bought a big bottle.
I absolutely love it 🥰
I find it unique, complex and seductive but very classy too. It’s very well blended even though it has many notes.
In the opening it’s citrusy fresh with some bitterness and smokiness. Then it develops into a classic flowery yet spicy sweet scent, I feel carnation the most. In the dry down it’s spicy sweet and waxy, mostly myrrh and amber, what stays rather intimate but lasts a long time.
It definitely should be part of a fragrance collection.

My mum wore Roma in the late 90s and I got her a bottle recently for her birthday. Roma is pure elegance and class. It is floral yet smoky, fresh yet subtly sweet- the sweetness is a slightly sticky almost waxy resin (the myrrh mixed with the amber) that compliments the florals and citruses so well. It lasts all day on clothing and a good 5 hours on skin. As a 25 year old, I can appreciate this fragrance so much, it is cozy and warm and will forever hold a dear place in my heart. I bought Venezia and It felt too vintage for my nose- but Roma is timeless.

If Roma were an outfit it would be a cream skirt suit- the woman wearing it would have perfectly blown out hair, polished nails and black heeled courts- my mother in 1998 :)

SailorV

I own a vintage 90s mini of Roma and a more recent sample, and I have also tried a tester in store about a year ago.
Some reviewers say the recent version smells unrecognizable or only of mint and grapefruit, but that's not true to me. Yes, these two top notes are very noticeable, but Roma is still no simple freshie! The spicy carnation and the resinous base are still there and give a nice contrast to the herbal, citrussy top. This is not a creamy, balmy kind of scent, it has a dry myrrh note that feels reminiscent of church incense. The vanilla only comes out a couple of hours into the drydown.

What is true is that the vintage is more intense. I usually find the current versions of 80s/90s powerhouses still loud enough, but the current Roma is kind of light and airy, especially for an oriental. It lasts long, but the projection and general strength are soft.
The vintage is not only stronger, but also warmer and sweeter. Because of that I like it more than the modern version.

Both versions are clearly recognizable as Roma and have a unique blend of notes that I have never smelled anywhere else.
I'm not usually one to fuss about reformulations, but in this case I would recommend the vintage version if you're into warm orientals and the current one if you like dry, herbal scents with a resinous edge.

This was one of my older sister's first perfumes when we were growing up. Can't remember much of what i thought of it then except that it was warm and slightly spicy. Tried out the male version years ago during my first period of collecting and being underwhelmed by the quality. Am now in my second perfume obsession phase and came across it on sale at a local drugstore. The opening is fresher than i remember, mint and bergamot clearly stand out. In the heart the spicy carnation and some demure rose are most noticeable. Complex warm base of myrrh, vanilla, woody and civet comes off as a bit powdery/ dusty and conjures up visions of the sun warmed stones of the old buildings that reside in the city the perfume is named after.

Absolutely glorious. Would recommend to everyone who is sick and tired of the current perfumes trends. All those sweet gourmands with either oud or patchouli or nondescript freshies with so much synthetic components my nose just doesn't register.

After reading the other reviews her i found out the bottle i purchased is of the new formulation (marbled box). This also explained the slightly chemical and messy opening of the top notes. fortunately i do still love the reformulated version. Did i get back and bought some more? For €22 per 50 ml bottle (Kruidvat in the Netherlands) yes i did.

And again, after a few days with this fragrance: is’nt it funny - the eighties and the early nineties was the time period of the ugliest clothes I, and many with me; have ever seen.
I did not like them even then. But the fragrances!! Oh my!!
Back then, I was quite poor and did not try so many fragrances. They are coming to me slowly, now. I have got a few, wish for many, though I know I cannot have them all. I love old ones, I love new and modern ones.
But today, I wish for nothing else but losing myself in my private little dreamy cloud of Roma. 🌞🌼🍃🍁🍂

Trying Roma for the first time right now..! And it has very good potential for me, I have to say.
At first, it is a fresh citrusy blast, with maybe some woodyness. Then after approximately 10 minutes, I started to feel the civet, and was wondering where it would go...
And now, maybe yet 20 minutes later, the funny thing for me, which I have never experienced before with any perfume/fragrance, is that I feel like there are parallell lines of the fragrance, twirling around eachother like a stream. And that is absolutely beautiful.
I feel the mint, and I could never have imagined it being so lovely as a perfume note.
I feel powder. I feel warmth. I feel some sweetness that is of a kind that the modern fragrances never can express.
This was a blind buy, and the very best one. I got a very good offering for a gift set with 25 ml edt and 50 ml body lotion. But this is so lovely that I will have to buy the biggest bottle some time real soon!! I have not had this feeling for anything of this genre (soft sensual romantic?) since I discovered how absolutely beautiful the original Tresor was/is, which was about a year ago, a little bit late to the party - I was. So, chances are great, that if you love Tresor (NOT the flankers!!) you will also love this! They are not in any way the same, but they are somehow in the same line.
All summed up: LOVE!!!

Romma can be very elusive perfume, fresh and subtly sweet at the same time. Sometimes its all about grapefruit and myrrh, and other time almost juicy and tropical like Fanta!
One moment I can even detect mint, then - sweet resins, and all of the sudden, I can't smell anything at all, but later surprisingly comes back as sandalwood and oakmoss.
Sacral and dirty, warm, even exotic, just like the city itself.

Gicha

A bit too heavy for me, similar to Obsession. Gave it to my mother and on her skin it develops such a nice sweet aroma and I like how she smells, as soon I use it - headache.

alioni4ka

I was so curious about this one, i wanted to try it a lot and almost i was 100 percent sure that i was gonna like it. In reality; neither i hate it, nor i love it. I had really high expectations based on notes, actually i asked which Laura Biagiotti perfume is suitable for blind-buy in the forum here; i was hesitant about buying this, Venezia or Romamor. Now, i can definetly see why they warned me that they might not be suitable for a blind buy; this is not creamy, balsamic citrus i excepted it to be.

All the ones in comments here who say that it smells like church; is soooo right! This definetly smells like an old church; which i really enjoy smelling but i am not sure if i want to smell like it. Myrrh is soo dominant and noticable but a bit agressive according to my taste.

To me openning is kind of old-school, reminds me of perfumes i smell in my mom’s or aunt’s vanity tables when i was a child in 90s, very harsh openning. As Ronett mentioned in the comments; i dont say this is like a dupe to it but it gives me same vibes with Calvin Klein’s Obsession. On the other hand, dry down is more subtle, warm, spicy and as i mentioned; very church like :D I can easily see why people like it; because it s an authentic and expensive-smelling perfume, i am just not sure if it s easily wearable for me, maybe it can be more suitable after 30 years of age and more.

This can be worn as an unisex easily in my opinion, i believe that any perfume can be worn by anyone of course, and i can easily see a man wearing this.

Longevity is really good; it stays for a long time. Sillage is okay; not a sillage monster but definetly noticable.

kirrineyears

This is for the newest bottle: fresh realistic mint. Cocktail bar Mojito prep style mint. And some vanilla... I'm afraid not much more breaks through and it stays fairly linear. I don't mind it though. The freshness is appealing! I wish I could compare it to the older one because I am missing the myrrh and balsamic aspect that made me want to try it in the first place. It should be fairly easy to track down an original though.

gmr1967

Very dry opening, I would say almost bitter and on my skin the note of the carnation is felt immediately. Definitely a fragrance different from the oriental sweet ones. This perfume is really particular because it goes far from this idea. Different, deep, persistent and fickle on every different type of skin. Each one of us will have a different fragrance where "differently" one note will be noticed more than the others. Praise to this Maison that has been able to create such magnificence. Also this fragrance accompanies me since its first release.

Austrian_in_Denmark

A 180-degree-turn for me. Severely detested this in the 90's, when it was one of the most used perfumes. I remember reading a novel by Vine/Rendell, where someone "smells wonderfully of Roma" (or so), and it literally made me shudder with disgust.

When I tried Roma again a few years ago, I became an instant fan-girl: what a warm, sensual, nuanced fragrance!
I love this now. Have tried vintage versions, and they are stunning. Have tried a newer version, and it is a little different, but so charming and well-done, too.

Also, it smells far more expensive than it is. In Germany and Austria you can buy Roma at a low price: the current version in shops, and the vintage ones at online trading portals.

Louismanuel

Roma was the first fragrance I bought for my wife (in 1997)although we weren't married yet. I gave it with the promise of first the fragrance and than one day the trip. And even if it took me almost 20 years to fulfill my promise, it has been one of my wife's favorite fragrances and my favorite on her for quite a long time. Many years later I gave her No.5 which soon became her favorite.

Both are very elegant fragrances, that will probably appeal less to young women. I would still advise Roma as an affordable fragrance for a 30+ woman.
My wife has had at least 5 bottles through the years. The previous one she had was a 100 ML which she has used for too long and after a few years the scent had gone bad. She has now a new 50 ML and according to her it is the same as it used to be.

Kar1917

In the nineties I had a bottle of Roma which I liked a lot.
So a couple of days ago I gave it a try, but it didn't remind me of the scent I once had. It's a totally different perfume unfortunately. The longevity of the old Roma was very good, but to me the new one has no lasting power at all, within half an hour it was gone.
Because of the positive reviews I will give it an other try when I'm at the perfume shop again.

AnaGar

Ronett, I wouldn't put it in the same category as Obsession because it is less sweet, less amber and lighter. It is quite unique - feminine, light, spicy at the same time. By light, I don't mean short-lived. It is long-lasting on me.

Ronett

Does it smell like obsession to her by CK ? I mean the same scent line ?

octobertragedy

Where have you been all of my life? I LOVE Thee...This is the best blind buy I've ever made, based on the notes. The reason why I wanted it is mint. And yes! Mint is there, not loud, but very much there. Incredibly zesty, fresh, minty grapefruit opening, then deep hyacinth, rose, patchouli notes and in the end creamy sandalwood, musk and amber. On boy! Nothing like this in my collection...Even though I did it, I wouldn't recommend blind buying it.
Now, does this remind me of Rome? Yes! Been there some years ago and as a tourist in the heart of my ancestors home city, I got the same feeling of being "small" in front of a masterpiece! Both (the fragrance and the city) left me speechless...

Astara_Elaria

To my big surprise, this one is still beautiful. I got it from my younger sister as an unexpected birthday gift. She remembered me wearing this one when I was 17 years old (yes, the eighties and early nineties - former times! A teenage girl could easily pull of a perfume like that, since all the mature women wore even heavier scents - and they all did not apply with a light hand...lol).
First moment, I wasn't too much impressed, thinking, "no, I am not that nineties girl anymore...". Roma seemed to be reformulated also - but not to the point that I wouldn't recognise the old fragrance feeling.
Especially in the start it's less creamy now, more citrusy fresh (yes: grapefruit) and strong at the same time - you can feel the basenotes already before they enter the stage. It is a little more flowery in the heart compared to my memory, and the base is a bit more dry than I remember. But there it is: beautiful myrrh, sandalwood and amber. So - to my surprise I found myself still liking. I reach for it quite often, don't mind that's it is still quite strong for our becoming "no perfume, or only light perfume" era. And it has still the noble feeling of italian classics. But it isn't as expensive as it was ;)
For the ones, who never met "Roma" - the basenotes are not unlike to Voile Ambre by Yves Rocher. So if you like that, you may also like Roma.

zapling

I bought a new bottle of Roma after having rediscovered my 15 y o Roma Eau de Parfum and emptying it to the last drop this time. The new Roma seems different. kndeed, but it may also be because I have bought Eau de toilette.
In any case, I get more mint and more orange blossom, overall it's lighter and sweeter than my old bottle, which had more wood and a stronger base. But still, very nice.

Holli

This is going to be the dorkiest review ever, but this perfume smells like love to me. It's like someone hugged you and their perfume just stuck on. Growing up, my Grandma's house always felt like a perfect place. It was always clean and comfy and anything you needed would be there. For some reason, Roma smells like that feeling. It would be perfect to wear to a family style dinner. Totally unique and sensual. It definitely doesn't feel modern, but it's not dated either. Really special.

pinkRocket81

Roma; the Eternal City.

This perfume takes me back to my visit 2 years ago. It was October. Without being over-romantic, it truly seemed that everywhere we went the streets had a spicy, floral smell; of hot earth and stone baking in the Mediterranean heat. Hot pink, overgrown bougainvillaea engulfing the gritty, arenose city walls, it’s spicy subtle sweetness combined with vegetal greenness of the arid, subtropical landscape. The scent is not limited to the outdoors, but also takes you inside Roman interiors; the warm, burnished floorboards of old book shops, the coolness of the marble and cobblestones, and the soapy, sweet incense of the city’s cathedrals. This perfume in some way does allow me to vicariously revisit the city in my memory – at least the parts that weren't permeated with culinary smells, unless you want to include basil..

Now about the perfume. It is definitely warm; an amber-citrus scent with dark fruits and a cool hue of mint in the base note. At first, the initial spray is dominating, with an intense grapefruit in the top note, but then dries down to a creamy Oriental with vanilla and incense in the heart. The sillage is good (about 4-5 hours on my skin), with decent longevity. I am pleasantly surprised at the quality of this scent, considering the price. The kitschy column-shaped bottle, unfortunately, doesn’t do justice. Nonetheless, it’s a familiar symbol for Rome, so if the perfume doesn’t smack of any association to the place, at least the bottle will.

Molly Smith

This smells exactly like a polished wooden wardrobe. The scent gets sweeter as it develops.

liverpudlian78

This is my second review of this perfume, and I must say I've changed my mind somewhat about it. I have tried it one and off after the initial few tries, and now find it very unique and pleasant in the dry-down.
When I first tried Roma, the opening grapefruit and minty notes were unexpected, and put me off. At first, I could only detect that grapefruit/herbal thing, but after a few more wears, this dries down to a very elegant, sweet and slightly spicy scent. I find it comforting and womanly now, and have gotten used to the grapefruit such that it doesn't seem to overwhelm the basenotes as much.
I want a bottle of this now; only downside is that it doesn't have brilliant longevity or sillage, but I can smell it on myself for the most part and I enjoy it.Yes, I'd like to get hold of a bottle of this whilst it's still available.

TheMood

My first choice when searching and learning for perfume profiles as a young newbie. Again am attracted to spicy fragrances that are interlaced with something else. Still like it as much but now the market has so much more offerings, yet haven’t come accross anything like this it has its own profile!

Edit: tuesday 7th of May, my attar sample congrigation arrived and I found
Oil that is close to Rome: Al Rehaab Rawan, after checking the same items are found in Rome. These attars are ideal way to gradually learn your way into the scent world as Rawan has smaller list I can Begin to identify more clearly what are the individual scents that truly appealed to menin that scent.

Also never having gone through Rome ingredients it included blackcurrant- which I defenately adore, a spicy foresty green smell, just like I love tomato fauna smell too very strong and viral scents also Hyacinth!! Which a little bit surprises me as I love having hyacinths for Christmas to me it’s an essential Christmas smell, but I would not think of wanting to wear it as it is maybe soapy and oldie worldie (?) but there it is in my favourite perfume!

Then again no wonder I like it so much with the long list of scents that evoke happy memories alone that all blend in together unrecognisable bundle of joy.

Which leads me to conclude I may be able to get away with piling up more and more and they WILL work together in some weird and wonderful way that I had not originally even anticipated (?)

Labaloo

Unique. It has the bitterness of 'White Diamonds', the serene and dry, woody-vanilla tones of 'Organza Indecence', and the austere detachment of Gucci 'Rush' with its "flat" blending around patchouli. I would say this is one of those oriental-oddities with dry, chypre-like qualities... yet still focused enough upon the labdanum-vanilla combo to anchor it firmly enough in its category.

My first impression is one of Italian sweets- specifically spumoni with its anise-vanilla-candied citrus flecks. But 'Roma' is far from "gourmand", as these sweet references are overlaid upon such elegant dryness underneath. Beautiful fragrance- from a time before the sweetness-overload took root, and complex perfumes with distinct character were still in vogue from the design houses.

ADDENDUM 24Aug20: After familiarizing myself with vintage Lolita Lempicka, I was reminded in sections of 'Roma'... could this be an Anick Menardo creation? I see she did create a few others for Biagiotti...

TankGirl

Sweet and incensy. A nice classic scent that can easily become a signature. It lacks a little edge once it dries down,it turns into this sort of vanilla body cream skin scent that is ladylike but sexy. Still not sure if will buy because it lacks something, but for sure its great for those days you just want to be cute.

medusa666

Roma has its own character alright BUT it has that masculine note also. The dry down is softer, but it is a perfume with unisex appeal.

hexed

Opens up into a Christmas spice mix -kind of a smell in the first few hours.
Very warm, it softens up a lot and just gets sweeter with time.
Makes me think of lacquered wood a little.
It's not love at first sniff but I definitely intend to come back to it and explore my feelings!

meg0825

Whew!

Roma opens with very strong grapefruit and mint. I thought I had made a terrible mistake with this blind buy. The main reason I bought it was for the myrrh. I do get the occasional waft of myrrh, but it's not near as prominent as I had hoped. The grapefruit-mint combination finally settles down after about 20 minutes. The dry down is pleasant with smooth amber and vanilla.

Not such a terrible blind buy after all, just not what I expected.

Katou117

Just discovered this beautiful fragrance. I blind bought it at my local drug store because it was just 20$ and after reading the notes on this site (I love myrrh). Would not be able to compare with original version but I like this one a lot. Don't like the first 10 or 15 minutes, too sharp to my nose but then when it dries down wow! What a gorgeous soft creamy vanilla woody sent. Very surprising dry down compared to what I was expecting after the first minutes of spraying. Turned out well once passed that, worth the wait. Love it, so far. Can't wait to see if will receive good compliments wearing it.

Alces Alces

Hedonista nailed it (review from 2017 below). Roma smells like lemon cupcakes and an old church. I would add that the lemon cupcakes are inside the church right after Benediction when incense is wafting from the church itself into its narthex (where the cupcakes are). Myrrh and citrus. And some weird weedy herb that I appreciate for its bitterness. This is some deep stuff that sets me up perfectly for Epiphany. Very evocative.

And as others have said, this is very much like Dune plus vanilla. Probably a love or hate thing. If you like the following things, you will probably like Roma:
Pine
Sandalwood
Myrrh
Incense
Grapefruit, lemon (NOT orange)
Herbal smells
Licorice and anise smells
Bitterness

Not bright, not floral, not gourmand, not girly. Great this time of the year.

liverpudlian78

Having tested this scent out, I find myself wondering what I'm missing. I did get the oriental vibe of Roma, but I was distracted and repelled by what another, sole reviewer described as a dominating basil-like note ( or, is it sage, or pine?). I have to agree that this is the dominant note to my nose and I find it horrible-just unwearable- which is disappointing. It's the first fragrance I have anticipated enjoying and been utterly dismayed by. The bottle is really lovely, so it's a pity I don't enjoy this scent really.
I'm going to try Venezia, as I remember trying that when it came out in the 90's ( I was only a teen).

Edit: I've given this another chance, and find it is not as bad if I go easy with it. I think I sprayed a bit much on to begin with, because it doesn't seem to pack much of a punch on the dry-down, so I sprayed more!. However, it is still not quite to my taste, as the herbal note is still present to a degree, and the grapefruit more evident. I do have to say that it doesn't smell synthetic in any way, and it sits quite close to the skin. I am happy to try more Laura Biagiotti scents, such as flankers of Rome and Venezia, given the evident quality.

Lune d'Ete

I love this one. Smells similar to Dune, less challenging to wear. Like a fluffy baby-Dune but it still has that salty amber feel to it. Very underestimated, very good, in my opinion.

Soofiya

Received a 1.7 oz edt bottle of Roma in a swap,I don't know whether it's reformulated one or the vintage one,it's box looks ancient,on it it's written "EUROCOS" and made in Germany,my bottle's all in all shape is similar to the fragrantica picture but there are some deferences,it's cap isn't clear,it's a cream-colored hard plastic cap and "Roma" isn't written on it's cap
Now about it's scent.my first, second and third test were failures.it opens with a huge grapefruit blast."mschnabel666"s review is spot on,what I smell for 40minutes is a natural, true to life, tart grapefruit and some mint,it doesn't smell bad but this fresh citrusy scent isn't what I can really enjoy
After 40-45 minutes grapefruit starts calming down but it never completely goes away.now that intense grapefruit doesn't overpower other notes,I can detect amber, smokey vanilla and powder.this stage is much more pleasant IMO and it's very soft.I wished I could smell lots of myrrh here but I'm not able to find it yet but this doesn't stop me from liking Roma's drydown. It's not a complex or heavy perfume like what I expect from a vintage,I'm not a fan of it's intense minty grapefruit opening and it's drydown which is my favorite part is fleeting and lasts less than three hours while is a skinscent, these factors make it far from a love for me but I highly believe that it's going to grow on me,I believe it has more to offer but ican't completely unfold on my skin yet so I will keep it and edit my review whenever something changes about it
For now I see it as a summer perfume as a fresh grapefruit is what I smell the most

Jorjianaaa

It's quite a unique scent in my opinion.... Smells ancient, powdery, rich and has a hint of spice in it. I kinda wish I had it when I was older because it's too mature for me back then (I was given this when I'm 13 y.o if I'm not mistaken). But now there are tons of other perfume I want to try therefore I don't repurchase. Btw, it also has a unique and beautiful bottle

Timby

As I am in my vintage scents pursuit....I really wanted to like this. I remember it when it first came out. It was too heavy, fuity, spicy for me back then. Fast forward now, and my tastes have broadened and developed since then. But, no. This one is not for me.

It has an interesting, strongly grapefruit opening. That part is ok, I guess. It is very short lived, and then I just get a flat resinous ambery note, that though its not bad, its not great either.

So, overall a two note fragrance. Longevity is decent. Sillage decent.

Even though I could have purchased it for cheap, in reality, it is too uninteresting for me to have at any low price, even if it is a vintage.

Having said all that, I do think the original was a bit more multi~ dimensional. More fruity, less amber.

Annemarie

I'm returning to this after not having worn it for a few years. I once had a desperate crush on Roma. I wore it obsessively for about a year. It's so easy to like and I can certainly see why people make it their signature. But I got bored with Roma eventually. I have not smelled vintage but the modern version seems to me to lack development (once the crisp opening has subsided). After half an hour or so Roma is still lovely but turns a little flat and heavy on me. It can last all day on me with just a few small spritzes.

Roma reminds me a bit of Rochas Man. They have some notes in common and some not, but the overall character is an aromatic crispness contrasted with a powdery ambery vanillic base. Rochas Man is also a little one dimensional but I prefer it for its coffee note, and because it's a tad less sweet. I don't need to own both, but what the hell, why not! Both of them are among the best bargains in the fragrance world.

Roma is a smooth, soothing fragrance and I'm enjoying a small spritz of it tonight. I might keep the bottle out for a while; maybe we can pick up where we left off.

cufberte.daniem

I have smelt two interpretations of Rome in my exploration of perfume. One has been Sarah McCartney's beautiful fresh tobacco & quirky tuberose Rome 1963 which was a part of her 'vintage cities' collection. Having seen many 60s/70s Italian films, I felt a connection between them and the scent. It was rather remarkable.

Then, there's this. I have a 25mL vintage bottle and it's quite musky, and smells very much like the 90s. It opens rather strongly, a little like Jicky, and then fades down into something spicy and resinous. I'm not too aware of Italy, much less Rome, during this decade but it isn't what I picture. However, going from the bottle, perhaps this wasn't intended for the clubber chic babe who wore something like Prada... perhaps this was for a more mature woman who worked in business and was always off to meetings. I'm still confused about this. It doesn't scream 'Italy', but it definitely screams something. The grapefruit, however, is the most sophisticated I've ever smelt. Nothing like a modern Chanel, much more like in Rome 1963. Rather lovely.

juniemoon

I tested this three different times - oh my gosh, WAY too heavy on the grapefruit! I saw it at a very bargain price but that grapefruit was just too much. And I actually like grapefruit note but no, just no.

Q80

Weird!

Myrrh, grapefruit, cedar, grapes, amber, & hints of mint. It whiffs between sweet, spicy, and sour. the oakmoss, carnations, and the sandalwood appears later on but the dominants are the myrrh, grapefruits, Vanilla grapes, & the mint.

Hmmm... it needs more time to develop and more tries to see if the connection comes up or remains silent!

mschnabel666

I stumbled on this, and put it on my radar, then found a cheap big tester bottle. This is my first Laura Biagiotti, and this is the first I've heard of the brand.

At first-- that LOUD juicy tart grapefruit/citrus just won't go away.... I've never had a top note last and last and last. And it wasn't good. It smelled too real/tart/sour/juicy, and I got a hint of mint as well. Well, my tester has no cap-- so I hope the loud grapefruit calms down due to another review that says leave the cap off to tame the top notes.

On cloth/tissue, the top notes lasted HOURS. So when I got home, I put directly on my skin. And I would call his "powdery" because it was a sweet citrus powder for a long time (after about 30 min of skin top notes). I do like it, but it seems awfully "generic"... I have a feeling the vintage would be much better. I can't pinpoint the notes that make this powdery. The florals? Must be. It's well blended then, and quite warm, but still light. This is no heavy hitter like other balsamic/musky/orientals.

Then on drydown I get sandalwood and vanilla. It's pretty sweet. The sandalwood reminds me of Samsara EDT actually. There is a hint of spice maybe, but I def do NOT get: civet, myrrh, patchouli or oakmoss. (Again, I have the reformulation)

Now, 1 day later on tissue, I get a creamy, smooth SWEET sandalwood/vanilla/amber/citrus that is quite pleasant and well blended. Just not mind blowing. And something smells familiar-- so I've probably smelled this on someone before. I don't think it's like Must or Dune at all. (But to be fair, the only Must or Dune I've smelled are the reformed EDTs. Must I like. Dune I don't.)

Average sillage/potency/longevity. The tissue test lasted 24 hours, but when worn on skin/clothing... average sillage. I wouldn't call this an Oriental Spicy... Powdery/Sweet Floral is more like it. I would love to get something chypre/green, spicy or animalic but I don't. Maybe my bottle needs to age with the cap off, or I need to try in diff weather/seasons. It was a very sunny balmy winter day yesterday. Temps in the 40s, which is warm and balmy to me. Feb is often below zero here. ;)

One last note, it DID have enough sillage that I enjoyed wearing it. I put on at 6pm, and went to bed at about 10pm... and I was very heavy handed. (I even re-applied once) Considering this needed to be on SKIN rather than clothing, and my skin soaks up perfume fast... I was enveloped in a soft sweet aura of powder during that time.

PricklyAndHot

I don't know why "Roma". I smell nothing like Rome in it. Not catchy.

Mona Lygre

Still it's one of my favorite perfumes, I have emptyed a lot of bottles of this special beauty.

But, I agree, the new perfume smells different than the bottle I first bought back in 1990.

zperr

Oh my God! What happened to the original Roma, I am so disappointed, where is the mint? The original was sensual, delicious, adorable! Now, the new formulations smells so weird in the opening, so disturbing for a while, but when it settles it comes back to the original formula (let's say after 30-45 minutes). But my God the opening is unbearable with some weed smell as some other mentioned before in the reviews which I totally agree. Please someone tells me where to find the original Roma, if it is still possible?

ibibonica

Quite different now than back in the '90s, more smoky from myrrh and a lot less powdery, and of course the duration is significantly shorter, only 4 hours on me, a bit disappointed but it still gets a love from me for what it once was.

phoebe25

Recived it today as an early christmas present for my self. I kinda spoiled myself on black friday.

This parfume is gorgeous. This scent makes me daydream about being in Rome on a hot summerday.

It´s a keeper

mapache

Received this today.
I am not sure of which formulation I got It is an 1.6 EDT. Some reviewers have said the bottles with "EUROCOS" made in UK are the original formulation. Mines says made in UK..but it has Prestige Beaute on the sticker.
No matter...!!!
This is....SPECTACULAR !! How I have let this gem slip by me for sooooooo long...wow...I love it.
To my nose...in the vibe of original Must de Cartier...in vibe only...not a dupe of it. To me it is fruitier than Must. Not overly spicy...but resinous..yes
A classic beautiful scent...enough said.
9/10
Projection and sillage....GOOD. Longevity....good.
First spritz..can fool you...so wait until it settles on your skin. Patience.

zapling

I smell peppermint, sandalwood, liquorice root and anise on a bed of vanilla. It's nice, and I wouldnt call it feminine per se. Roma would make a magnificent shop scent.

Plumaria

I have been wearing this scent for the most part of my 20ies, it was my signature scent and all guys loved it on me. It was a scent with depth and projection, the perfect mix of fresh citruses and the sensuality of amber, cinnamon and sandalwood. I loved to wear it especially in spring and it gave me this sense of joy and sexiness. I also had Dune and I thought that they were quite similar but Roma was sexier, warmer in the dry down.

In my 30ies I abandoned Roma and started experimenting with many other scents and I went back to it a couple of years ago when I was holidaying in Rome and I thought, why not. Of course it has been reformulated and it is now a bit different, it lacks on depth, and if back then the scent developed for hours changing from the moment you sprayed til the very next day, now it is a bit simpler and flatter, but still very nice.

Upon spray it has that kind of Shalimar EDT vibes. The dry down though is extremely similar to Shalimar Cologne EDT and the Shalimar Souffle flankers. Warm, powdery and sexy citruses, amber and sandalwood.

Hedonista

This is another of those fragrances I've been wanting to try forever. When I first tried it I was unimpressed. Lemons. Tried it again and immediately thought Christmas for some reason. Waited 15 minutes for the drydown and realized why I was getting the holiday vibe from lemons. At first there is a lemon smell with a well blended mint that goes away quickly. then you are left with something that smells like a good quality lemon cupcake being offered for sale at a church bake sale in a little OLD village church.
Lemon and incense blended with vanilla in a very good way. I've never been to Rome, but if it smells like that I should go. Decent staying power, around 6 hours on clean skin. Light to moderate sillage. I'm not sure if I have the vintage or not. In conclusion, glad I got to try it, may buy it again. It wasn't money wasted.

Bigsly

I have a 100 ml Eurocos EdT bottle, Made in the UK, short list of ingredients, and it came with a shower gel sample (apparently this means the batch is from 1999 or earlier). There's plenty of mintiness up front, but it smells natural to me. The florals blend together and are not dominant. It does come across as spicy/woody, in a mild way (I'm used to "masculines" that are a lot woodier and spicier, so keep that in mind), and there's a sweet/ambery element. It's all nicely balanced, other than the strong mint at first, and there might be just a touch of an animalic element. I think I would wear this in public, unlike most of the "feminine" scents I own. And I would be surprised if there was an earlier formulation that was substantially stronger or more animalic (other than an EdP or pure parfum, of course).

alisepe

Sweet, bitter, balsamic and minty. Very likable but also unique.
The opening is all about the myrr with a minty undertone (superb combination), later it calms down and vanilla joins.
This review is based on the vintage/first formula.

MikiRae

I've just bought a new bottle and have changed my view from a love to a severe dislike. This reformulation is horrific! Gone is all the beautiful rich resinous and powdery goodness I loved so much. This smells like straight up cat piss grapefruit and then dries down with a soft near non existent amber. What an utter disgrace! Seriously this is the worst reformulation I've ever tried. You should rather have discontinued the fragrance altogether because this abomination is NOT Roma. Thank the lord for Ted Lapidus White Soul! For those of you who loved the original Roma, try this. Its awesome!

witch_mum

Roma is my youth...when I was a student and it was introduced, my friends added up their pocket money and I received a bottle of Roma for my birthday :)

However I have now a big fragrance collection, Roma is still in a special place in my heart. Elegant, feminin, perfect for any occasion for me.

Romawi

Roma was my favourite scent in the 90s. A beautiful warm fragrance with this lovely grapefruit opening. Recently I bought a new bottle, and was very disappointed. A shadow of its former self. Very low projection and sillage, gone is the beautiful opening and the drydown is thin and woody. The bodylotion performs a bit better as far as the opening is concerned.
I also compared the new Edt with a vintage bottle I own. The topnotes are gone in the vintage version but the drydown is still intact and a lot stronger and darker than the current one.
Such a shame, I really miss the old formulation

moraine

If you have the reformulated version and are disappointed by the harsh opening, try leaving the cap off your bottle for a while. I found that it helped to tone these notes down to a bearable level. It takes several months. I can't say that the result is just like the original, but at least the drydown is now a lovely, womanly scent in its own right.

jozie.dzuanshik.1

One of my mamas signatures, she passed when I was 17 so this scent is very emotional for me. Tho, too strong for carrying it myself but maybe when I turn older. It's warm, woody, bold and strong reminds me of a sensual and powerful woman.

How Do You Make A Fragrance For Rome?

In 1989, I took a trip to Italy, which is my favorite European country with a group of opera enthusiasts and besides going to your usual tourist hot spots Venice, Florence, Milan (La Scala opera house) we headed for The Eternal City of Rome, taking the Appian Way. I took plentiful old Polaroid camera photos which are in an album of mine. It was July & the summer tourist masses had taken over the city.

Every time I wear Roma I'm transported back to that time in my life. This is a warm amber Roman sundown over the city, a sweet & feminine, sophisticated scent for the woman who is as beautiful as the Italian goddesses of iconic fame: Sophia Loren, Gina Lollobrigida & Claudia Cardinale. It often feel like one is in a classic Italian film wearing it.

Laura Biagiotti created this fragrance back in 1988 as a Roman Oriental perfume paean to Italy itself. Roma the first time I smelled her, reminds me of that Appian Way and the more ancient sights of Rome: the Coliseum, the Capitoline Hill, but mostly the old Forums and open air marketplaces. Fruit is being sold more than spices because it's the middle of summer. Fresh citruses, bergamot orange, grapefruit & black currant are among the top notes.

The scent is quite fruity for a 1980's fragrance, but not in the alcoholic fruit cocktail sort of way, nor in the style of Champagne by Yves Saint Laurent; nor the concentrated dark exotic fruit of Femme by Rochas. It's a tad sour but sweet at the same time, minty, and perhaps an attempt to evoke Italian gelato or sorbet. It has a sweetness coming from the currant & a distinct mint which was unusual for the period. The fruitiness of this perfume makes me realize that it's designed to be worn in summer with cool light fabric; thin blouses & mini dresses. At the time it smelled of youth & younger women. I was no spring chicken by the 80's but wore this perfume anyways.

A green carnation & jasmine bush comprise the middle stage of the performance of this Italian fragrance. It's green floral with a beautiful and evocative flower scents of gardens in villas. I detected a beautiful red rose (or red rosebush) which provides a touch of romanticism. A lily of the valley note is also detectable, but for me this is not a white floral scent; rather it's a light multi floral. A hyacinth is also noticeable. The florals are sweet & old fashioned, womanly, elegant. A green garden air comes from a patchouli leaf & oak moss, again taking me back to the Appian Way on the way to Rome.

When dry, this fragrance is neither sweet nor floral, nor fruity, but expressive as an amber based Oriental perfume. There is still too much femininity to make it a deeper, more complex and or unisex Oriental. There is a whisper of incense through the myrrh but it's still too green, as if unable to make up it's mind to turn into a hardcore Oriental or a chypre. I would say that it leans toward chypre. To be fair, a label should not be placed on such a gorgeous fragrance which is itself just that, a beautiful perfume.

The sandalwood is very fragrant & stylized, like an old sandalwood from the Emperor's palace in ancient Rome, used to scent the hair of the women in the palace - his wife the Empress & his daughters. Besides ambers, there is a musky & balsamic type of note. This smells of warm woman's skin, tanned or sun kissed skin, somewhat reminiscent of sun tan lotion. There's also an exotic type of patchouli that never really goes away. It is a very beautiful Oriental perfume.

Roma is sexy; seductive, classy & glamorous. They don't make perfume like this anymore. Fortunately the current issues of this fragrance smell like the orignal. It's so unique because I don't smell any common staple of today's perfumery like vanilla. This is more amber than vanilla, and more floral & fruity in a well balanced way. Roma is also very affordable for such a luxurious & expensively designed fragrance. Note for note, you can tell that this is quality. Rome may not been built in a day, but you can wear Rome in one day & smell as beautiful & rich as it's history.

desertrose63

In my warm happy place, I am wearing a found auction bottle if this loved fragrance. It gas veen on for 8 hours and still holding the warm dry down on my sweater and neck. More notes later after I refresh for the evening ladies night I am headed to. Delicious!

spinderella

I bought an old tester bottle, no idea if it is the old formula or the reformulated one, but I like it. To me it is all about spicey resins. No flowers, no fruit. Thank you, Laura! Warm, interesting perfume.
I vaguely remember it from long ago, but I never bought it then, because I was too young to appreciate the scent. It is very mature, confident and sophisticated. Not for a girl, but for a woman who knows herself and the world. Very nice.

Cerise Noire

I mainly wanted to try it because I know my mom wore this when I was very little. And I liked it when I first sprayed it on. It's really different from the modern ones it shares a shelf with in the shop I went to. It was so heavy though, just balsamic and minty. Though someone I asked claimed they could smell no mint in it, I was so sure. And there it is! I get really happy when I check on fragrantica and it turns out I identified something correctly.
The real surprise with this is what it turns into. It is now 6 hours after spraying and it's still going strong except it's totally sweet now. Finally the vanilla came out to play.

albena.alexandrova

Unfortunately I must share my disappointment that so awaited from me perfume. Roma not smell that I smell 15-16 years ago. The new Roma is predominant scent of myrrh, stale, church, both in the beginning and at the base. The reformulation scent, which later found out was horrific. Gone is that mysterious soft femininity, which was the original Roma. I returned perfume.

meissie1982

Last night I was craving something summery. The weather is changing. Late afternoon you can feel and see that summer is realy over and done.

After a hot shower I sprayed a good amount of Roma and put on some nice music that remind me of good warm summer days from the past.
I was transported to a holiday on Crete/Greece.

The pink grapefruit and mint were so relaxing and gave me that fresh and energy full burst.
I love it so much the first 15-30 minutes. It is so crisp in that stage. After that the scent becomes smooth and a lot softer. The amber and sandelwood together with the vanilla give it that soft summery blanket kind of feeling.

Roma is a great summer scent but also fresh and crisp during Autumn. I have three bottles, two 100 ml vintage and 1 new formula. Again the vintage are the best. The new one lacks the longevity. Sad...

ladushka

It starts fresh...pink grapefruit..a lot of it..crispy mint but ut changes rather quickly...it calms down and melts into soft warm rosy mossy scent when rose and moss come into play. The undertone is slighly spicy but not bitter. The drydown is warm and I definately smell myrrh, sandalwood, amber and vanilla. The scent is very present but it is also calming. Longevity and sillage are good.

enola

really reminds me of my hometown. both my mum and my auntie wear this, but for some reason I like it on myself best.
I love everything about Roma, from the initial citrus fresh blast, to the powdery, smoky and animalic middle, to the sweet persistent drydown. it's a safe haven for me; as a moody perfume wearer, I could say that this suits me on a deeper level.
I agree with someone else saying it used to be more fruity and sweet in the past but I wasn't wearing it at the time, so it kinda feel more personal now :)

Roman Holiday

This fragrance with it's column shaped bottle evokes a golden afternoon in Rome, as you walk by the Trevi Fountain and descend the Spanish Steps. It's classically beautiful and lasts a very long time. I wore it three days two of the three days I didn't even have to spritz it on because it was still there from the first spritz. This is warm balsamic fragrance in which patchouli is working it's magic and causing all the other notes to harmonize. The opening is a bit aldehydic and then jumps into the fruity notes of grapefruit bergamot and there's a mint. The mint is the scent that most dominates the top. The floral heart is sweet with rose and jasmine and a sexy carnation. The base contains sandalwood and amber but most of all myrrh. The myrrh gives it a warmth and smokiness the amber a golden glow. This fragrance smells very much like a sunset. And it also matches up with the Italian opera aria Casta Diva by Bellini from his opera Norma. It's operatic to me. It's enchanting, foreign, sexy, and yet elegant. It's a beautiful Italian woman you meet only one time while visiting Italy but you never forget her for the rest of your life.

Roma by Laura Biagiotti- A Man's review of a women's perfume.
10 stars folks. This fragrance is a winner. It has ample longevity, Heavy sillage, and brilliant note combinations. The opening is insanely elegant, with Black Currant, Bergamot and Hyacinth standing out flamboyantly, followed by Patchouli, Musk and Myrrh and the rest of the notes being tweaked, twisted and prodded wonderfully by roguish Civet.
This fragrance is a classic, a must have for every woman and every man who collects perfumes and colognes as I do.

Pinja

A beautiful, old style, flowery oriental fragrance. A more heavy than light fragrance. A proper perfume, meaning that it has what many modern fragrances lack: actual topnotes, middlenotes and basenotes. The fragrance develops on skin for several hours (instead of falling flat on skin and staying linear).

Top: A fresh and powdery blast of bergamot, blackcurrant, carnation, muguet, rose, amber and myrrh.
Middle: Dried fruits and flowers over the bed of amber, musk, sandalwood and myrrh.
Base: All powdery amber, musk, sandalwood and myrrh, some remains of the fruity and flowery aspects lingering in between.

The very different experiences/reviews on this one tell the essential about Roma. At least the older versions have different facets showing up during different wearings/wearers. Don't know how the most recent versions perform.

I love putting on Roma because I never know which notes will be emphasized in the beginning. The middle and the drydown end up being pretty much the same every time, but when the top notes first hit your nose it could be one of these, or some different combination that's emphasized:
powdery amber
powdery fruity
fruity amber
fruity floral
powdery musky floral
metallic, woody and some myrrh
myrrh, musk and amber

raiza1990

Spicy citrusy powder, from beginning to end. For me it is too sharp and i think it also smells cheap and old.Definately not for me. If the mint and the vanilla were stronger it would be more interesting.
Projection and longevity are not that great, even when sprayed on clothes.

mamehaviolette

This is so unique! It is very citrusy and minty, but balsamic and animalic at the same time. This smells also very italian as well. As soon as I tried it I commented with my sister that we could almost smell our kitchen, associating all the feelings connected to this scent. Just amazing. I want this sooo bad!

The_Entity

I can smell grapefruit when I first spray this, its a lovely heady summer frag, but theres something in the drydown that puts me off, cannot put my finger on the notes, but it turns sour

ArandeNim

Today, I learned a valuable lesson about body chemistry.

On paper, Roma is everything I love in a fragrance. In a bottle, too, it smells woodsy and spicy and bracingly autumnal. Animalic, but presented in such a charming, affable way that there's power to the scent without being skunky in the slightest.

Elated, I sprayed it on myself. After a few minutes, I began to reek of bad breath. Ouch. I really wish it worked better on my skin, because on a test strip I absolutely love it, even after a day of smelling like gum disease I can't bring myself to rate this any lower than 'like'.

kewart

This is the perfume that turned me into a perfume-lover and started my addiction to scents of all kinds.
It is an unbelievably beautiful and confident scent which never fails to draw compliments.

When my nose first had the pleasure of discovering Roma,it twitched with delight, rolled over and gave itself up its considerable charms. It became a favourite of mine, particularly in autumn, when it seems to enhance the cooler, mellow months.Myrrh, balsam, civet and vanilla smooth it out after an unusual minty, cirtrussy top and a floral middle. It lingers on clothes and leaves a delightful trail behind the wearer.

Easy to find still on ebay etc at reasonable prices.

fostermd

When it comes to perfumes I either wear the heavy, dirty, musky animalics or pure florals and when I saw that this one contained a virtual zoo of animalics I knew I had to give it a try. I did find that it was pleasantly sweet, rich and balmy with lots of vanilla and resins like myrrh and amber, but the currant, mint, bergamot and geranium gave it a very unique spicy flair that caught me a bit by surprise, but it is a pleasant sort of surprise. As it dries down the bergamot, mint and currant yield to the more floral heart of lily of the valley, rose, carnation, and jasmine yet effects of the black currant still leave their imprint on the floral heart and the floral heart is also relatively transparent to the woody, musky, amber-vanilla base notes that provide great depth and warmth to the floral heart. Then quite a few hours later the remaining base notes smolder as warm amber, vanilla with the woody tones of sandalwood, but at this point it is to be smelled only quite close to the skin. This is a very nice oriental that really is quite suitable for men or women. I wear it since Roma for men is completely different and I do not like it at all. During the first 5 hours or so on the skin it has good sillage but then draws in closer to the skin as the heart retreats and it lasts long enough as not to require it to be reapplied unless you are going out in the evening and want to refresh it. Although it contains I zoo of animalic notes there is nothing to fear, they all are quite tame. Only the black currant is the scent that some could find a bit unusual.

shadiiii

من با این عطر خیلی خاطره دارم بینهایت خوشبو با ماندگاری عالی و پخش بوی خوب

AlisonD

A pleasant spicy powdery perfume.
After the initial orange citrus punch when applied it quickly dries down to a gentle aromatic spicy fragrance with good longevity

I wouldn't spend a lot of money on this fragrance but if seen at a good price it is a nice one to have in the collection

„A Roman tribute”

Let me be honest: I'm a bottlomaniac. I love flacons that are inventive, interesting, creative, beautiful or just feel great in my hand ... And let me continue - Roma by Biagiotti takes the price... or at least it is to find in my top 5. A well-designed bottle to me is a bottle you remember, that feels right in your hand, and that captures both the fragrance and the symbolic value of the scent and name. Roma has it all. I've been so lucky to have visited Rome and the spirit of the city is definitely in this bottle. Walking among the ruins of what once was The City on Earth craves a certain amount of respect and awe toward the founders of such a place. Roma sums it all up.
The scent itself is a marvellous creation, starting out as a citrus-woody-spicy scent. I don't get any mint but the bergamot is lovely combined with the rose, which is actually from the heart notes. For several hours I can enjoy the changing mixture of the heart ingredients and when finally I hit the base (the longevity is more than 8 hours on my skin!), it is just yet one more wonder of a well-composed scent, releasing amber, myrrh and vanilla in a wonderful combination.
My husband bought this for me, the first perfume he has ever bought for me... He tells me that when he senses it in a room, he turns his head to look for me. That fact does not make me love it any less.
You have to be in your twenties to wear this, in my opinion. This oriental fruity beauty is a mature scent, and you will be noticed when wearing it, since it can be detected from up to 5 feet away, and make sure that this is the signal you like to send, namely: sexy and warm. If not - wear something else

Ilprofumo

I absolutely love Roma by Laura Biagiotti. I buy a bottle of Roma everytime I go to Italy and between visits elsewhere if I can find it. It is not available at department stores in my city. My first bottle of Roma was purchased in Rome, Italy which happens to be my favourite Italian City and second home ❤. I am wearing Roma as I wrote my comments.

1. Luxuriously rich, timeless, and priceless....for the right person.
2. It is an extremely elegant fragrance with compunction; in other words it has substance and best worn by women of likewise character.
3. There is a fruity, citrus scent that is present when first applied which gently imbeds itself slowly into the sweetness of Amber, developing into a unique delicious warm intoxicating fragrance that is both sexy and alluring.
4. Albeit there is a sweetness influenced by Amber it is not sugary sweet but rather an italian dolce reminiscent of italian liquors and drinks.I refer to Roma as perfumed "Chinotto" which is an Italian soft drink containing herbs and caramel. (Parallels similar to Hypnotic Poison by Dior and comments that root beer is detected.)
5. When Roma reaches its last layer it becomes a beautiful almond-dolce-light floral with a hint of spark lingering from the citrus.... which is extremely gorgeous and feminine. Longevity is excellent.....24hrs ➕ .

A real gem of a perfume.❤

Colin Maillard - I couldn't agree more. Perfect review in my opinion. I still have Roma on the back of my hand and that's exactly what I'm smelling.

I was lured in due to the similarities (Dune and Montblanc PDF) and am glad that I tested it. Although I must say that I don't completely agree with the similarities. However I do think that if you like either of them Roma is worth testing.

Fun fact: When I first sprayed this on I thought someone had thrown a grapefruit in my direction. It was so fruity and I absolutely did not excpect that!

bluecg

A scent from the eighty's. Would like to rediscover it:-)

Corinne39

I love love love this scent! it was a blind buy earlier in the year, towards the end of summer..I got it and really wasn't convinced! Now though, the the arrival of autumn/winter it comes into its own...Its amazing..Christmas in a bottle, warm and sexy without hitting you in the face.. Can't get enough of it and receive so many compliments on it. Very glad I bought it, and at such an affordable price form All Beauty.com Definitely a keeper!!

Julia1506

This fragrance for me is so Italian! It has them all: flowers and woods, spices and aldehydes, some earthy notes, all mixed together so nicely, creating a symphony. It is elegant, complex, maybe oriental in a delicate way, not heavy at all. I think Italian divas could appreciate this kind of fragrance. I use it from time to time, mostly during the colder season as for me it is not a summer scent. And I love it.

Alley - D

Even with a cold I can still smell Roma - not a bad thing though. I love this fragrance. It reminds me of the original DKNY and Dune and smells of fresh tomato vines.

You shouldn't be disappointed with this one if you don't want to smell all 'girly'.

Elenose

I entirely agree with jola 72! It should change its name! Not the same perfume i wore when i was adolescent in the 90's! The reformulations steal us our better memories, it's a shame

Jola 72

I have the modern reformulated version ed toilette 25ml bottle.First blast of minty myrrh note, powdery Italien leather, feells cozy and friendly. It is dry and powdery resins on my skin, holds on several hours.Safe scent all in all, perfect to the work and relax...
Sadly...

Not at all same Roma as it was time ago.Magical is lost for me in this new release of perfume. Why they call all these new reformulations for same big names, can not understand it...These are NOT same perfumes and would change names as well...

Karineabdel

JizzJuice

Wonderful scent, beautiful woodsy drydown. If you like Must De Cartier and Krazy Krizia, then Roma will complete this trilogy. Got this on a blind buy and I'm very satisfied.

MadMadamMimm

One of the first perfumes I ever wore. I think it is a beautiful unisex scent, perfect for fall. It makes me want to wear tweed and walk around a New England college campus.

greenelf

Another scent that surprised me--I had fallen in love with Biagiotti's original scent, which was a fresh, all white floral perfume--and this scent couldn't be more different. One of the few oriental scents that have ever made a really big impression on me! It's very sexy, yet clean and fresh and lasting. This fragrance is a real balancing act, with notes than make me think of a rich, warms seductive scent like Shalimar, but without the ambery, musky, spicy notes dominating. The freshness and the fruit keep is sparking and not smouldering. I really miss this one, since I just have a mini or two left of it!!

kati77

Wow.......really its a edt but longevity so strong as parfum pure. Also strong spicy note, for me and my skin its too much. I dont detect at all rose or jasmin which i wish i would. Spice overpowered all the rest of mixture notes. I am sorry but i dont like it. Not my style ,nothing seductive here.
Big bravo for longlasting of this perfume.

lonestarlola

I first bought this the year it came out, and I have come back around to it with as much reverence as I had the first time. I just bought a vintage bottle and am so thrilled to have it back in my collection in full size. A tip: If you want the old vintage, look for Eurocos as the producer and don't buy the non-marbled box. If you're buying on eBay and unsure, ask the seller to tell you what the bottom of the box says.

For me, this can be worn any time of year but in the summer it's more of a nighttime scent. I get the pungent bergamot, thick myrrh and balsamic notes very strongly, and the mint plays well with the mix of florals. Very Mediterranean, as one would expect. I imagine a hillside terrace after dusk and into the evening hours, sun-kissed terracotta underfoot and urns of herbal plantings growing wild along the balustrade. Tall Italian cypresses and evergreens press close, and citrus groves gleam darkly in the distance, their shiny green leaves and golden fruit reflecting the light of the sun and moon in turn. It's warm and earthy, sensuous and mysterious in the evening - like wandering the woods in the moonlight, an anticipation of adventure.

lizziekayy

I have only the body cream of Roma. I find it a lovely sunny sophisticated fragrance. The packaging could only be one colour - terracotta. Like a warm Italian terrace with terracotta tiles and pots overflowing with citrus fruit trees . The grapefruit keeps it fresh rather than sweet and it dries down to myrrh and soft spice. Quite subtle and mysterious.

I love quiet refined sweetness of this gem. Spice at its best, not brash, not overpowering, but warm and shimmering.
It is not anything like Must.
And I think it has been discontinued, so whatever is out there, it is not a real thing. It does not have same intensity.

jessyparis

Roma by Biagiotti, is to me, very reminescent of Must de Cartier. Though, this mixture of woody blasamic amber scents dries down to a quite vanilly base. Very sweet still ageless.

EmiliM

I like to start my reviews with song lyrics.

Do I make you feel like Christmas time?
Put me in a party dress one time
Love me till I see the sunshine
Say you'll never leave me

Well, Roma, you definitely make me feel like Christmas time. As much as it sounds elegant and cold, to me it smells like cozy fall evenings. It makes me think of a fireplace and a blanket and cookies fresh out of the oven and a hot cup of tea. If Roma was a clothing item, it would be a burgundy woolen scarf. If Roma was a woman, she would be a mother. If Roma was a feeling, it would be happiness.

I love how warm Roma smells, like a golden glittery cloud hugging you as you walk, making you feel safe.

Planet_X

Its Christmas perfume, its winter perfume, its ..girl from next door perfume!! Someone who will knock to your door in pyjamas and invite herself for cup of tea)Do u love bergamot for waking up?.. I do!
Its lovely, not trivial simplicity, not usual-faceless-something
It is powdery, but if you like Armani Sensi you will understand what I mean. Its like burning logs as well, its like all those simple but NICE things we all waiting for...

Also I never saw a person, be it man or woman, who wouln't like it. All People love Christmas smells)))

So if you oriental-woody-citrusy-balmy person, give it a try I would say. Its not expensive. But its unique.

lily13ana

Roma starts strong and softens very fast. Is somehow similar to Dune, but behaves as a skin scent with good longevity.

athenian

I got a vintage 1 fl oz Eau de Parfum Concentre. Wow, this is so strong! Smells like pine and spices on me. Overpowering. I don't know if I like it.

Lakambini

I have a couple of minis of this, one of them the vintage formulation for sure. They both start off with a jarring, somewhat spicy-herbal note that could be the fragrance starting to go off, but is probably the intention of the perfumer, as can be gleaned from the various reviews here. This stage is a short one, and the fragrance develops into a muted, low-lying cloud of pleasant woody-vanilla semi-sweetness with a definite citrus character, which, however, never becomes astringent nor too lemony. Lasting power on me is close to five hours.

Its low-sillage elegance isn't something I would normally associate with the city of Rome though, despite the rather appealing classical column-shaped bottle. Aside from its obvious worth as an office scent (attending a woman in a pale, impeccable suit and gleaming hair in a chignon), I think this would make excellent signature material, if it weren't so difficult to find. I'm a Laura Biagiotti fan for sure.

SolangeN

A sweet amber that is at the same time transparent and fresh. No hint of "ozone" laundry or chemical musk. The mint is spearmint, not peppermint, and functions as an herbal bridge between citrus and amber elements - there is no "toothpaste" note. Perfection in any season. Purchased several years ago.

marzena.goralska.5

Ok, so I'm actually thinking about buying Roma but quite confused with the fact that there is old formulation which I presume doesn't exist anymore and new one that is not as good as the previous one. Also noticed there are two different packaging for Roma. Is there anyone who could clarify these things for me. I understand it's a review space but I would totally appreciate any help with that.

macheprofumo

ROMA by Laura Biagiotti is a beautiful and classic perfume that reminds me of Roma the Eternal City and the Classic Italian Woman. Easily a 24/7 fragrance to be worn with resilience and confidence. I love it and wear it.

Swisa

I love Roma, since the 90s.

Kimreu

The citrus blast that hits me at first spray smells like a clean sweat. You know that fresh pungent grapefruity sweat smell you get right after a good workout or jog? The not filthy but still nasty 'I need a shower' sweat...That! I think it's a grapefruit note. Also, there is a strong mint smell to add to the bite. Ironically it dries down quickly to a soft minty orange creamsicley sweetness. It's the oddest thing!! I bought this because I LOVE Venezia, so I assumed this would be similar and it's really not. Because of the opening, I originally HATED it and it was in my trash pail for a few hours, I must confess...I decided to keep trying it, rescuing it from the trash, and I'm glad I did...it's complicated and deserves some time. I like this quite a bit now. I hesitate when I reach for it because it is so complicated but the dry down is sweet and very 90's to me. It's not an easy wear for me, but worth the risk every time. I can see a gemini liking this fragrance.

valbona.bergman

this perfume is made to make you see Rome and it does work! i can see it in a cold but still sunny day, while drinking a strong esspresso , wearing something heavy and the fresh air caressing your face, while people are strolling up and down in a beautiful square. It is a strong rich perfume, spicy and warm. I still have half a bottle left, since my mother gave it to me :)

epicurean

This fragrance is complex but very versatile; spicy yet fresh, warm but with a vibrant citrus opening. You could wear it on a summer's day but also to work in the autumn.

I'm very glad I blind bought it despite the 'kitchen sink' list of notes. Roma is a herbal, citrus oriental which has a striking medicinal note from the mint and carnation in the composition, underpinned by the strong presence of amber and myrrh.

It reminds me of my visits to Rome: experiencing la passeggiata, sitting in cafés in the early evening and drinking chinotto and Campari.

Andiamo a fare qualche vasca!

temporal

I have a recent "made in UK" version. It's a pleasantly warm yet light fragrance. It's very soft and feminine, a mild citrus note leads it from the beginning to the end. It interacts with the skin (pale ash blonde) very well, but seems to stay close to the owner. I would like it to be more vivid and long-lasting.

A bottle is enjoyable. I'm happy about this blind buy based on the reviews at fragrantica, though it's evidently different from the earlier "evening" version of "Roma", for which an advertising was produced.

Can it be, that reformulation of well-known fragrances seeks to turn evening perfumes into socially friendly (and thus, very light) day fragrances? Pity, that they fade away so quickly.

BikiniBabe

A true classic perfume with a roman heritage bottle design =)

Best suited for summers in a bustling city. It makes u smell elegant and yet keeping u fresh crisp smelling all day long. =)

Roma makes me feel like a one fine lady, which I'm normally not. It's magic! Such a luxurious ambery goodness which even now, at summertime, is not at all too heavy.

The start is green, balmy and even a little herbal. I don't care that much about the beginning, but then comes the good part: delicious powdery amber that lasts for hours. You definitely won't have to add this stuff during the workday!

As much I really like Roma and even though it's one of the rare fragrances that can make me feel like something else, I still don't love it. It could be a bit stronger, now I don't think anyone else notices this. Might be good for some, but for me it's a little boring when a frag is just a skin scent. Thus, it doesn't earn my love, but I definitely like it very much!

RueCambon

It's one of my favourite...a lot of memories...an old perfume, which became a legend...love so much the bottle and smells very oriental to me, but not that strong...wearable for every season of the year and every time of the day...in one word...a legend!

missdietcoke1

Oh Roma, sweet memories. It's been about 20 years I first came across Roma. Had a weekend in Italy and I swear streets smelled like Roma, they were promoting this beauty so heavily. Being 15 years old, and not knowing much about perfumes I instantly wanted to buy one. To my horror I did not have enough money left to purchase even the smalles size. The lady at the counter must have felt bad about me and gave me a vial, and I have treasured it for years. Nothing smelled better then Roma.
I am not too happy with the reformulation...Tried it, can do without it:)

opa

Enjoying this beauty during last week! Gorgeous, complex, comforting and intellectually stimulating one. Detected three phases of its development very close to the description given by Cereza and I do love them all!

PerfumePatty

I think of Roma as a unisex scent. I get a pine forest smell, though pine is not listed as a note. It reminds me very much of the fresh, woodsy aroma of pine needles that you find when you are on a Roman hillside park, overlooking that glorious ancient city. The opening is herbal and refreshing (a little like Clairol Herbal Essence shampoo of the '70's), the drydown is rich and sensual. Very strong sillage and longevity. I recommend!

basgam

This was my first fragrance ever. Didn't know it's price, didn't know other fragrances too well, but people complemented me on it incredibly often. I guess it must have settled on my skin pretty well and some of my friends purchased the same perfume after me. I remember the smell very well and on me it was warm and chic, not citrusy at all. To me it still smells like good and sophisticated perfume, not like one of those cheap fragrances that one can find in perfume stores nowadays.

leorine

It smells like basil mostly

allegro_barbaro

My Roma has zero lasting power and zero sillage. I have a pretty good nose for picking out notes but all I get is some momentary grapefruit zest on application followed by a barely detectable thin chypre drydown. I have been forcing myself to wear it the last month to see if I am missing something and I have decided I am.......the original formulation of course!

HopeFloats72

I hate boxwoods. The reason I hate them, beside the fact that here in the Southern US they're used in a great deal of funeral floral arrangements, is because they smell like a litter box. That smell is a smell I could live without for...ever.

However, I'm making an exception because of this fragrance and what it BECOMES...post-litter-box, attack-of-the-very-underripe-extremely-bitter-black-currant-bud opening. (The green smell is so reminiscent to me of Maxim's de Paris...just exponentially stronger and more offensive).

If I had scrubbed this concoction off at that point I would never have know what it would BECOME. Needless to say, I liked what it blossomed into, after that horrible beginning.

Once that 20 minutes of doubt passed I rather enjoyed wearing Roma, as it warmed with this wonderful ambery, incense fragrance that I've been smelling for the last 11 hours and 40 minutes! I have a great love for sandalwood and this has also been with me most of the day today-especially around the 2-4 hour mark. I love that! The patchouli is nice, but not over the top, which I'm glad for, because with the amber, vanilla and sandalwood just a hint of the patchouli is JUST RIGHT.

I liked it...but I have to admit it had to grow on me. If I had judged it from the first few minutes of wearing Roma, we would have parted ways. I am glad we didn't. Although, in the future I will try to make sure the hubby is already gone to work so I don't have to hear him going off about how bad my perfume smells!

Britt005

i got this from my mum and she always used to wear this when she was younger. it's just a quite heavy and classic fragrance . something you would wear to a dinner but not for a day of school.
i just love the subtle smell of vanilla in it.

catsngunsnyarn

I LOVELOVELOVE Roma. The citrusy cinnamony powdery scent is clean, but still sweetly feminine and sexy. I've been wearing Roma since 1992.

Linden

Although the current formula is lacking some of the richness and longevity of the original, I still very much enjoy Roma. It remains a fragrance of contrasts that transitions beautifully from fresh grapefruit and soft mint in the opening to a warm, sweet-spicy base with a hint of very smooth vanilla. There's something incredibly sensual, almost intoxicating about it - a "timeless" elegance that still works its magic.

missk

Finally, after all this time, I've managed to test Laura Biagiotti's Roma. Amongst perfume enthusiasts, this is considered one of the classics. I hear a lot about it, and even more appealing is its relatively inexpensive price tag.

First things first, Roma is unique. It is also very complex. While it did get off to a rocky start, once settled, Roma is a fragrance I can imagine myself wearing quite often. In other words, I am very pleased.

The opening was temperamental on my skin. The citrusy blend of pink grapefruit and bergamot, in addition to black currant and mint, smelt a little sweaty on my skin. It wasn't like the scent of bad body odour, but more like the way one smells after applying a sweet-scented deodorant and doing a tense workout at the gym.

Honestly, I felt so disappointed and put off by the initial 'sweaty' opening, that I had little hopes of Roma improving. Much to my surprise, Roma transformed into a smooth, slightly musky and spicy scent, which was vastly different from what I had previously experienced.

I find Roma to be perfectly balanced and well executed. It can sometimes be a little difficult to describe the way it smells, but I will try my very best. The pink grapefruit accord lingers, providing an element of juicy freshness throughout, while a musky blend of amber, oakmoss, patchouli and vanilla create a sense of warmth and sensuality. It may sound corny, but Roma, at least in my opinion, smells like a sophisticated Italian.

The sillage is quite strong, followed by excellent longevity. I never see this fragrance in Australia, but I do hope it's still being sold overseas. The packaging could do with some updating, but other than that, the scent should remain unchanged. Roma is, when summed up the Italian way, bellissimo!

mendosita

Very summery, sparkling opening made of citrus and mint. It smells like mojito drink mixed with lemonade and champagne. Then- after about half an hour- "true" Roma is coming out. It becomes sweet, velvety with strong smell of incense. Lot's of incense combined with vanilla. Very cosy and warm. Wraps like casmere scarf. I like it a lot.

melancholybaby

A very unique opening; a blast of very green notes - seemed like basil and mint, even thought the basil is not listed...a clean bright green, reminiscent of summer herbal notes. From there, it developped into a very sweet fragrance, without the depth I was hoping for with the listed notes. An interesting combination, but not what I expected, and not something I enjoyed.

cleopatrasboudoir

This is delicious! Soft, sweet, spicy and laden with vanilla, myrrh and sandalwood. I adore this fragrance! I happened upon an old sample and was so impressed. This smells like it should be a niche perfume. I haven't smelled the newer version yet...but judging from the reviews here, I might just try and get the vintage instead.

Lotto.Lupus

Very strong, but classic and stylish. Not for your everyday wear, though. Very early Biagiotti! ;-)

Cookie2

This has an amazing strong spicy yet feminine powdery vanilla drydown with a hint of cloves that lasts for hours. Quite intense, suitable for autumn/winter. The problem is getting past the first 45 mins to an hour in which the acrid mint in the top notes dominates and which I do not find pleasant....

cikcik

ls this only EDT? Or is there any EDP? This is so lovely but it has poor sillage. A friend of mine , having used it many years ago, ordered again and wore it to work. We are 3 ladies in one room. We could not smell anything. lt has changed l think. Then l and my other friend tried it. lt only stayed on me though poorly. Starts with sugary citrus, goes on like peach and flower, and gets minty, then comes the adorable greenish powdery vanilla. l love the change. Wish it was stronger!!! Lasts for 2 hours. Can be a good summer scent though.

piapedersen

To me, this is one of the real classics. The flacon is beautiful, simple and decorative. The smell is very complex and I think it changes more than a lot of other scents, which gives the impression of mystique and sensuality. It's fresh because of the citrus notes and still a warm and deep feeling due to the woody and spicy notes. It has a very special meaning to me, because it was the first perfume my husband bought for me in the early 90es and he tells me that whenever he senses the smell he turns and looks for me. Sweet, I think ;O)

LadyRogue

When I first started using this scent it was a wonderful mix of roses, bergamot and something else I could never identify (Lemon??). After a while it started to change on my skin. I hate to say this about a perfume, but it started to smell like car tires that burned?! I think my chemistry and Roma don't get along. It's a shame, because on others it smells wonderful.

Aysu

My first Roma was from early 90s. Suppose that it was before the reformulation. Now I have it again and interestingly I like it more than before!
It could be either personal, simply change of tastes OR reformulation worked for me.. For me the only negative side of reformulation is weak staying power of the scent, previous one was incredibly dense, strong, leaves on clothes for day, and new one is definitely weaker. I used to like first one for the vanilla/amber/sandalwood drydown with powdery carnations (but it was not screaming out 80s!!) but I had to wait too long to get past of "spicy/minty" phase which I did not enjoy at all. But in new formula, powdery/vanillic dry down comes faster, and I feel vanilla is stonger in this one, so a dislike of past became a like of today for me..

Hippyhop2

This one is special... I wore this perfume when I was younger... And I don't get that old feel that some people describe...but I understand what people mean. I think you hate it or love it. A elegant, recognizable scent. I think the name Roma fits perfectly, classic and present. A sultry smell, perfect for evenings.

ivanavly

It's definitely a fragrance for older women. The thing I found incredible about it is that I sprayed it on a dress I was wearing one evening and a YEAR later I could still smell it on the dress - unbelievable lasting power.

rosembloom

A delight for the senses. I have a mini and use it sparingly but am definitely in love with this classy, fresh, intriguing and sensual fragrance. This spicy oriental seduced both men and women and all I got were lovely compliments! The acrid fuit opening is sharp to my nose (which i love!)but blends wonderfully with the floral heart and complex drydown. The amber note and patchouli are strong yet utterly feminine while the vanilla adds warmth to this gorgeous fragrance. The myrrh enchants me as it lingers xxx good day all!
.

krmarich

Roma was the Italian signature fragrance-named after the capitol itself. I was able to find a mini that predates Proctor and Gamble. It inspired its French cousins to a lighter warm weather friendly trend. Yes, I was immediately reminded of Dior's Dune, yet this came first.

It opens with dark vanilla/myrrh/amber that dominates the entire composition. The florals are secondary to the civet and oakmoss. It last for hours and has minimal projection, which draws those you are with closer. It is very seductive!

The bottle is clever, if not a bit kitchy, like something you might find in a souvenir shop in Rome. That is the magic of Italy.

It was as sublime as the Eternal City itself. It was very modern as well. I imagine Anita Ekberg wearing this in the Trevi Fountain in La Dolce Vita.

mister_chaz

Roma is woody-ambery vanilla, it reminds me of YR Voile d'Ambre, except that Roma has got very noticeable mint and fruity blackcurrant notes. It makes me think if someone who is wearing a standard mellow vanilla-amber fragrance and is chewing on a minty gum at the same time. I'm not sure of I like Roma that much, I think Yves Rocher is a slightly better alternative (unless you want that mint!).

sally.west1

Loved this and Venezia in the old days of the 80's and 90's and have just re-visited Roma by buying a mini and seeing if I still like it. Yes I do! What a great smell, totally unique to me and unlike anything else - I suppose "Dune" is a little like this but this is much more complex and very warm and womanly. For winter or summer I think - luscious!

alyaa

This is a unique fragrance that starts with a burst of mint, and in a very nice way. It then starts to mellow. I used to wear this when it came out and had completely forgotten all about it till I saw it at a discount store. I am glad I bought it

kosmoskukka

Hi Dears,

This is amazing scent. And especially when other people say so when you are wearing it. I have not got compliments much but there are few scents I get and Roma is one of those. Other is M.Micallef Watch -time for love and third is Van Cleef First. Roma is very sexy, strong, comforting, special- meaning with her individual nature, deep. This is one of my all time fawourites too. Always got a new bottle when old one is ended up. Can`t be without. Though not always wearing... but never letting go of it. ;) ***<3<3<3***

Gekons

The best perfume ever. I feel sensual, elegant and strong when I wear it.

3ood

i got this as a gift .. it doesn't smell like the city rome on my skin..it smells like india ..but maybe its only me ..that said ..on my friend it smelt lovely

marbre rose

lapurrla

When applied for the first time since the 90's. If Angel's a patchouli bomb could this be called a vanilla-patchouli bomb? Rich and heady spicy mix for the vanilla oriental lover. I have a vintage boxed sample of Roma and I realised it reminds me of Krazy by Krizia. Side by side comparisons reveal they are quite different but many similar notes. Interesting to try both and I put YR Venice on the other wrist. Overloading on vanilla. Very rich mix. I feel like I'm wearing ice-cream or custard but prefer to eat. Is this gourmand then? It's delicious anyway. (Vintage boxed vial).

lyria

A delicate mint note cutting through flowery spices. Refreshing in a non-traditional, sophisticated way. Barely reminding of a medicine, however in the positive sense – just a hint. Charming, complicated and a bit “masculine” femininity.
