40 Knots by Xerjoff is a Aromatic Aquatic fragrance for women and men. 40 Knots was launched in 2012.

Join the Club Collection includes ten perfumes representing ten different kind of virtual clubs. Fatal Charme is about elegance, glamour and fashion; Ivory Route is an adventure and travelling club; Marquee represents a theater club; Kind of Blue is all about jazz; 40 knots is a yachts club; Ascot Moon is a horse club; Birdie is for golf lovers; Comandante is for fine cigar lovers; Shunkoin is for meditation and More than Words captures the world of writers and poets.

The ingredients of these fragrances are to be kept a secret. However, each fragrance will have its identification card with a number which one could use to join the real club of the owners of these perfumes. That’s how the concept goes from virtual clubs to forming a real one.

The bottles of the fragrances are made out of authentic blue glass; not the tinted kind but the glass of which the production is limited and are very rare.

I feel like this being a “yacht club” fragrance would mean it would smell more being on a yacht heading out at sea but is definitely not that.
The opening of unexpected amber and cedar comes across as super powdery with some slight green notes, but dries down to have a more tame amber with salt. For what it is, I think longevity is fine around 5 hours and seems like it has pretty strong projection at first but becomes more of an intimate skin scent on dry down. I would say 40 Knots is more like dressing up and having like a dinner on the ocean side at sunset with a salty breeze. For sampling my first Xerjoff, I’m left a little unimpressed especially when looking at the price, but maybe I’m not big on it because I wanted it to be something else and completely blind bought one.

Try before you buy because the notes aren't accurate to what you will actually smell. This fragrance has a heavy powedery amber base. There is to my nose a light incense to this, I'm surprised that of the reviews only two other people mentioned incense. It's by far one of the most approachable amber fragrances, I do think the marine aquatic note creates a light balance. Imagine when you go to the beach and get in the ocean and when you get out, smell your skin and that is the subtle salty and marine smell that this fragrance has, it's not heavy at all.

I don't own a full bottle of this one and don't have any intentions of it, a 10mL would serve me well.

wagner.giljunior

The opening is great, some sea, saltiness.... a lot of feelings and smells that make you try to understand the fragrance.... after that...it's just baby powder... really, its just that... a luxury baby powder....

I was considering buying it after tryied at a store, thanks God I got a sample before doing it.

Invasionbg

This fragrance has such a misleading name. There is nothing in it to represent an yacht club (Not like I've ever been to such).
It's powdery, floral, ambery and somehow dusty.
It's very well blended and I just started wearing it, so this is kind of first-ish impression.

Definitely dress up fragrance. I can imagine rich people with a very high class lifestyle wearing this as a signature every day fragrance. Maybe that's the way how from the brand imagine an yacht club scent....

Yay_Or_Nay

Absolutely fantastic, this one. This, Decas, Zefiro and Torino 21 are definitely staples. Renaissance and Nio are great too, but if you are new to Xerjoff and are looking for summer scents, i would recommend starting with 40 knots and torino 21, then decas and zefiro👍🏻

renomen43

Does it smell like baby powder? Yes, it's similar.
Is it a luxurious, high-end and beautifully blended baby powder? Hell yeah.

Fresh scent, but not your typical summer aquatic type fragrance. This is heavy, salty, woody.
I think the scent is pretty linear. It doesn't change much. You either love this or hate it at first spray. But it grows on you.

Longevity is spectacular. I've sprayed only once on the shoulder of my t-shirt. After 5 days, it's still there and it's strong. Of course it doesn't project after days, but even from a bit of distance you can still smell it.

Xerjoff at its best.

SAMPLE BEFORE BUYING

People aren’t joking when they says it smells like baby powder - it does.

It’s a decent fragrance, smooth and I can understand the “luxury” aura some say it exudes. The amber base IS nice. But you need to sample it - for me personally, I simply could not get past the baby powder opening and mid section, to the point it made me nauseous.

The gf also recognised baby powder from it, which was a hard no given the thoughts associated with the smell.

ToastedRye

This is an interesting fragrance. I can understand the comparisons to the fizzy cola-like opening of Roja Enigma, but in my opinion, this is much lighter, and perhaps more floral. Upon first sniff, I don't really think "Enigma." Rather, it feels closer to a sort of mashup between the honey notes of Killian's Back to Black and the fizzy floral notes Stephane Humbert Lucas' Wish Come True. To be clear, it's much much lighter and not nearly as sweet as something like Back to Black, but there is a distinct saccharine note running through this fragrance that I also smell in back to Back to Black. In regards to Wish Come True, I find that that 40 Knots shares the sort fizzy cognac note that Wish Come True opens with, and also its almost sunblock-spray/lotion charm.

While I don't see this as a particularly aquatic fragrance, I do think it's yacht club adjacent. It feels well-dressed, but still casual; boozy, but not drunk; sweet, but not candy like; misty, but not aquatic. Imagistically, it smells like a family yachting trip: Everyone's dressed nice, but it's casual because they're meant to be having fun on vacation. A couple of the adults make a nice boozy beverage and sip it on the sundeck, and the kids snack on frozen FunPops (while mom goes around misting them with sunscreen to keep them from burning).

Best fragrance of all time ?

stringstheory

i enjoy playing around blurred lines of unisex fragrances so with a good score on a sample i thought i'd give it a shot...but my body chemistry does not have enough of whatever it needs for this to smell anywhere close to unisex. i see where the people getting "spicy Coca Cola" are coming from, it's dominated by very strong cedar notes and spice like those clove cigarettes i loved even though they made me feel nauseous and suffocated if i overindulged; little to no marine/saline notes on me.

way too powerful and not fresh enough for me to associate with a yacht club - i'd say it's giving slightly scraggly but still well groomed marine/navy veteran, with a jawline that could cut glass. a tempting but ultimately poor life decision i have no business making, especially at this price point.

Interesting thing for spring, summer... Baby wipes smell for sure at the opening, but drydown is way better. Smell like sea... Only problem is that projection is good at that opening (first hour), and bad at drydown where he is so nice. Bottle solded...

The opening really does smell like baby powder. I don't pick up on any of the marine / salty notes. Eventually, some wood notes emerge on the dry down.

Overall, not extremely impressed. It does smell high quality, just too soft / powdery for my taste.

ivanthegreat

2 main things to know about this fragrance: 1)the opening of the fragrance and the dry down are WILDLY different. The opening is not so great to me. It smells like you’re standing on a dock looking out at the ocean and the extremely salty marine smell coming from below is piercing your nose. Definitely too salty but not overbearing. Luckily, this opening dies pretty quickly. The dry down leads me to point 2) If you are looking for a clone of Ambre Nuit with 10x the performance, look no further. In the air they smell exactly the same to the point where my friend asked me if I was wearing ambre nuit. Thing is if I had actually been wearing ambre nuit he probably wouldn’t have smelled it at all because it’s basically a skin scent unless you put on a million sprays. 40 knots quite literally has the most ideal performance I’ve ever seen in a fragrance. 4 sprays of this stuff gets me a perfect 3 ft scent bubble that lasts 9 hours. The scent bubble is very noticeable to other people but not overpowering. I’ve had girls make excuses to lean into the bubble for a couple seconds while wearing this scent. Definitely signature scent worthy.

Final point: I have no idea how anyone in their right mind considers this to be an aquatic, summer, high heat fragrance. If you don’t consider Amber Nuit to be a high heat fragrance (which I don’t) then you shouldn’t consider this one to be either. Even in the opening where it’s at its most fresh and aquatic it’s still too salty and spicy to be a good high heat frag. I’d say if it’s hotter than 70°F you should reach for something else.

This is the first entry in my Xerjoff journey, and I'm starting with one of their most hyped "freshies"; 40 Knots. This fragrance, and indeed every Xerjoff fragrance I'm going to be reviewing, will be a true blind test. I have never smelled this before, even as a sample. All I know is that Xerjoff is held in very high regard, matching its very high price point. As such, I'm going to be holding this to an equally high standard. Let's get into it;

Scent:
Opening is aquatic, citrusy, and green. The primary notes I get are sea water, salt, green notes, and an unlisted citrus note; possibly bergamot or lemon. The strongest of the notes are the citrus and sea water. The citrus is very strong in the opening, which makes it very peculiar to me that it's not listed. However, Xerjoff does purposely omit the official note breakdown for this fragrance, so it's not particularly surprising. It's a sweet kind of citrus, like a sugared lemon or something to that effect. The sea water note is very oceanic and fresh, reminiscent of breathing in air from the sea. This is followed by the salt and green notes. The salt note is present solely for the purposes of complimenting the sea water note, helping to complete the illusion of a sea breeze. The green notes are subtle and give the fragrance a grassy background. Dry down is woody, aquatic, and salty. The primary notes I get are woodsy notes/cedar, salt, and sea notes. The strongest of the notes is the woodsy notes. The cedar/woodsy notes are very masculine and natural smelling, but not overpowering. It's obvious they're the star of the dry down, but it's not like sticking your face in wood shavings like some wood notes can be. The salt and sea notes play a supporting role to round out the dry down and keep that oceanic feeling going. The dry down reminds me of an old wooden boat that been sitting at a dock for years collecting the essence of the sea.

Performance:
Initial projection is strong at around 6 feet. Sillage is very strong and leaves an unmistakeable scent trail. After 3 hours the projection was about arms length, but the sillage was still going strong and easily noticeable. At around the 7 hour mark the projection and sillage were still the same. At 10 hours the projection was gone but there was still a slight scent trail. The fragrance became a skin scent before the 12 hour mark.

When to wear:
This is a spring/summer scent that is most suitable for daytime wear, but could work in the evening as well. I'm not sure what it is about it, but I wouldn't pick it for office wear. Strangely enough though, It could work for a date night.

Blind buy:
If you like woody and aquatic scents this would be a safe blind buy for you.

Final verdict:
As stated before, I had high expectations going into this review; and I wasn't disappointed. The scent itself is masterfully blended, very obviously made with high quality ingredients, and smells great. The performance is impressive, especially for a fresher scent. And while I wouldn't call this a mass-appealing scent, it's definitely a crowd pleaser and most people will enjoy it. The big question; is it worth the price point? For me, probably not. I'm not the biggest fan of "freshies" to begin with, but I still have some affordable fresh bangers in my collection. For that reason I can't justify dropping $360 on 40 Knots. That being said, it does aquatic and woody exceedingly well. So if you love that scent profile this could easily be a grail fragrance for you.

40 Knots is my go-to year round signature scent and it’s hard to explain but it just works for me and on my skin unlike any other fragrance. Any season, any occasion. Formal to casual.. the office to date night. The longevity and silage are both outstanding and it just gets better as the day goes on. It’s a complex scent that is difficult to describe. A bit fresh and aromatic, a bit spicy/pepper and salty. It’s one of the few fragrances I have that I actually want to keep smelling myself through out the day. 40 Knots is THE reason why Xerjoff is my favorite fragrance house.

@AH89
I’m suprised you are the first one to point it out. This smells like Tobacco Vanille with a bit fresh, salty twist. Quality scent for sure though.

Oz1212

One of my favourite summer fragrances smells like playing golf on a yacht.

I think I creamed out of excitement of smelling this fragrance 🦦

dadashmamash

this scent is really nostalgic to me thats all imma say

SH89

The name, bottle and description are super misleading imo.

I was expecting an aquatic blast, like Nishane Ege or Megamare, but instead, it reminded me of a toned-down and fresher TF Tobacco Vanille, not to say that they are the same. Definitely not. (I can't accurately recall Ambre Nuit).

Although it made me worried that my nose was broken, I can't complain as it smells beautiful and has good performance, but it is not what I expected.

siverthov

Smooth and soothing. Screams luxury. Can agree on the baby powder comparison, but even though I'm a father of two I'm gladly paying retail for this beauty.

lormp

It’s smells like a fancy baby powder/baby wipes, but somehow also luxurious and “Spanish hotel” at the same time (I assume because of the high quality ingredients Xerjoff uses). It’s definitely not bad, most people will like this scent and it’s very versatile!
But it’s simple not something i would wear as a scent in the future. I will happily finish it this summer and especially while on holiday tho

Anabol2336

I reviewed this one a few years ago but it deserves another one. The best aquatic summer fragrance I've ever smelled. Better than even Creed Erolfa, Millseme Imperial, or Aventus Cologne. Better than Bvlgari Tyga, PDM Sedley or LV Afternoon Swim. My best description of it is it basically smells like a niche version of ADG Profumo. Does anyone know if there's a good clone of this one? The price is the only problem. Own a bottle but trying to conserve it. Since they discontinued ADG Profumo 40 Knott's is the only fragrance close enough to it to replace it for me.

Noballs2010!

This is a small overall review for any blind buyers
As you first spray this fragrance on skin it reveals a very boozy, fresh and salty accord, completed by a sweet, honey, fresh dry down, almost like popular Xerjoff Naxos without all the tobaco

beGentile

Considering the reviews, I expected a lot more from this fragrance at first.
I got a very good offer and as usual decided to buy it blind.
At first in the opening,a very big disappointment! This one opens with extremely synthetic accords of wood, something green and very likely a crumb of tobacco (which is not listed among the notes - but I can smell it).
The first phase of the fragrance reminds me unbelievably of the opening from Comandnte, even at first I thought that I had mistakenly received Comandante from the same house.. Not long after that powdery-woody (cedar) accord enters the whole story, which unpleasantly hits the nostrils (and then miraculously again there is no big difference between him and COmandante)..I think that Comandante was a big inspiration in this phase when Sergio creating this fragrance! I can even smell that powdery tobacco accord from Mancera's Black gold...as if there is some kind of cross between mancera's black gold and comandante...the smell somehow leaves me indifferent at this stage.

The problem is that this thick powdery essence gives the fragrance a striking stigma until the drydown.
After that comes the "magic", and this is where the fragrance starts to shine!Powdery accord disappears and a strong fine cedar remains in this plan..This is where cardamon is start to kick in (which gives it that watery undertone) and with the combination of rose and salty amber gives this fragrance a very unusual, classy and refined stamp.
This is the most beautiful phase and lasts until complete evaporation.
The smell here is very reminiscent of the more expensive Ambre nuit from Dior, only 40 knots is more brilliantly polished with cedar and cardamom, which immerses the senses in that watery(aquatic marine)composition.
This is basically a very fine and luxurious interpretation, more precisely a perfect mix of salty amber in combination with a rose dipped in a little cardamom (enough to wake up the senses) on a base of fine cedar (which essentially imperceptibly dominates the entire composition)....which gives that salty marine(aquatic)ambery vibe!

What personally bothers me about the fragrance is that thick accord that keeps the fragrance in the middle (neither in heaven nor on earth), so it's honestly very difficult to determine when and in what season the fragrance would wear...it's not for summer at all, maybe the ideal period be it for pleasant autumn or spring nights... as if the fragrance lacks the airiness at the end to be perfect.

For those for whom Ambre nuit (which was ultimately the inspiration for this fragrance) is too weak in terms of performance, 40 knots is a great substitute.
Is the same fragrance worth that money? I don't think it is, although I might agree with the original statement that it is worth buying if the opening of the fragrance would not be so artificially performed in a synthetic way that does not suit xerjoff at all.

Projection is excellent for the first few hours, while the scent in the drydown is subtle and close to the skin, they provide a very decent and pleasant aura to the person who wears it!
Durability is bad for this type of fragrance, 8-9 hours... but if I compare it to Ambre nuit by Dior, it's definitely a beast.

Don't buy blindly, try it before you buy.

Opens up very aquatic on my skin, dries down to soap with powdery amber underneath. I like it and it's very unique but I will not be purchasing a fb. To the common nose, this creation smells like baby powder.

Cashicals

Smells similar to baby wipes but not in a bad way, salt and wood are also very prominent notes. I can see this being hard to wear but would be the perfect formal scent for a cruise or ocean boat ride

kris-tine

It opens very sharp but it starts to settle on skin and I get baby cologne vibes. Kinda like Prada infusion D’iris (I’m not saying they’re similar, just the baby vibes I get). Although, it gets pretty uncomfy smelling it on my skin due to the cedar note. I think it makes this fragrance more masculine.

Dbhudia27

Woody and salty notes are the main performers, less marine than advertised. Smells like an old country/yacht club in the summer.
Longevity is incredible, with the cedar and salty being the most prominent on the dry down.
The sillage is also immense, have had compliments from the other side of a hallway.

However, I had purchased 2 bottles by accident so I’ll be selling one for way under retail. Dm me on instagram at @db.bhd or on Fragrantica.

laczkopatrik

I had so high expectations towards 40 Knots, but for me it's mediocre at best. On me it turns into a clean, soapy scent but not in a good way. I had designers with this DNA that smell 3 times better for third the price. I feel like Xerjoff is just ripping off people's money who are trying too hard to be niche or just want to be part of the "Xerjoff Identity". For me, a lot of their scents are waaaaay overpriced for the quality you get. Sure, they are good quality, but there is no fragrance no matter how the best quality ingredients were used for the making that costs 540€ for 50ML. I'm writing this as an owner of A2, and despite i really place that scent in the top 3 best smelling scents in my life, still isn't worth the price.
That's how I feel about 40Knots too.

Traixy

This fragrance FOR ME is the BEST summer scent I've smelled. It smells like woods mixed with the ocean and just smells incredible. I would wear this every day if the price wasn't so high. For me this lasts over 24 hours and the projection is incredible people can smell me from 5+ feet. Perfect for warmer temperatures

istvan.buda.779

Been testing Xerjoff in late and I can honestly say when I run out of my fragrances in my collection ( I'd say 5 or 6 years ..I will only buy Xerjoff. Only perfume house where I can actually smell a fragrance that I am wearing all day ..
This one is perfect for summer because it does have an airy quality to it
after first wear I would rate this 8.5 out of 10

3rdlove

Will have to put my noise on this myself, comments on here will confuse you

nu12

Clean, ambery, sweet, luxurious, unisex and long lasting.

SavageKing

I am a mariner myself so I figured this would be a fun buy due to the fragrances name. Upon receipt of this scent I was mesmerized and could not sleep for a week straight prior to shipping off to my new vessel. Once I was on the vessel I sprayed 6 sprays of this scent onto my body and walked up to the bridge. The captain was there and he sniffed the air a few times then looked at me and attacked. The last thing I remember was being bent over the helm while he thrusted me with his mooring line mumbling something about my intoxicating scent. I awoke in the medical bay where again I was attacked in the same manner, this went on daily for the duration of my 90 day deployment. It is safe to say I was very sore by the end and my bottle was nearly empty. Overall 9/10 sillage could be better

AkselSvEn

high quality not mass appealing not aquatic not summery at all summer evening yes mabye. amber baby powder bomb. good not amazing

Tracyj87

For me this smells like ambergris and cinnamon with salty touch. It’s not marine in my opinion. It’s smooth though no rough edges. It’s an interesting wear but strangely I’ve smelt the same exact type of amber from Amber kiss my Jimmy Choo seduction collection. However in amber kiss it has a benzoin vanilla undertone where as this one is more spicy and salty undertone! Great longevity not sure on projection as no one has commented on it yet haha.

detroitlandmark

This is genuinely one of the best fragrances I've smelt in my lifetime. Although the price is high, you pay for what you get, high quality and superior longevity. It smells like an afternoon swim surrounded by tropical trees, as I have smelt this exact scent during that situation. A very versatile fragrance, and can be worn all-year round day and night. 10/10, high recommend.

lol_Nahh

I really didn't want this to smell like baby powder like the other reviews say. I wanted a luxurious salty woody fragrance. this is not that...
This smells like the baby powder i would expect they would use in a royal palace, plus a slight slight whiff of wood. I get no salty, no green and barely any wood.
If you want to smell exactly like fancy baby powder this is the perfume for you.

siverthov

Smooth and soothing. Screams luxury. Can agree on the baby powder comparison, but even though I'm a father of two I'm gladly paying retail for this beauty.

Asweid

Just like Dior Ambre Nuit , creamy woody spicy with a touch of salty breeze 10/10 very beautiful high Quality fragrance .

LouD23

Reminscient of the Amouage DNA, 40 Knots doesn't feel like a summery perfume. It's very heavy, ambery woodsy, almost herbaceous scent.
At the first (very strong) spray, I immediately thought 'Amouage', and I'm still getting that an hour later. I think I like it, mainly because I can actually smell it on me, which has been an issue with some of the niche perfumes I've tried recently.
Not really very seasidey so far and I'm not sure if it projects very much either - nobody is commenting on it. Sniffing it on my wrist now its settled, and I'm getting something slightly boozy/fruity, much like the apple and dark rum of Angel's Share. Actually so close to that, I'd almost think that's what I was wearing. Mmm, it's nice. Not sure if I'll buy a full bottle yet at the price tag, but it may grow on me enough to splash out. I'll try it in different weather's and at different times of day and see if there comes a time when the magic happens.

Frank Drebin

I just received this today. I wasn’t sure if I liked it on the initial spray, but once it sits for a few minutes it’s so nice. I keep having to sniff my arm, it’s that good. Real happy to have a bottle in my collection

Maison Atalay

Opening is aquatic. After half an hour, it is neither aquatic nor green. It smells like babypowder spilled on a diaper. How is this supposed to make us feel like in a yacht club

anikek

I hate this one so much its unreal

c0ca1nel0ve

Dont like the opening not because its bad or anything i just personally dont like the note of salt in perfumery, but the dry down is magical it's to die for honestly. but i dont understand it being a summer fragrance it comes across ambery and woods heavy to my nose it doesn't feel very fresh but its a great scent nonetheless.

Asphaltdefender

Yes it is woodsy, but it seems like a warm fragrance. I really do like this fragrance. A cola vibe comes in the dry down, which I think is the best part. 8.5/10

ilovefragrancesmorethanme

This is definitely a divisive fragrance I knew that the second I sprayed it, the opening reminded me of a fruity air freshener for a good minute😭. but my god the more time I spent with this the more I fell in love with it, once I got passed that opening I was addicted as I gave it time to dry down it transformed into this salty, sweet ambery scent whilst also being light and aquatic. Its so incredibly unique I find it hard to describe, it really gives me vibes of sitting on the beach at dusk watching the sunset. It’s salty enough to remind you of the ocean breeze and its warm and ambery enough to remind you of the warmth and coziness of the sand its just incredible imo. The longevity is crazy and I mean crazy I wouldn’t recommend wearing this on a super hot summers day cuz you might be gasping for breath. This lasted a full day on me even after a shower I still got whiffs of it. The projection is equally is insane.

Overall I think it’s such an beautifully artistic, addictive fragrance. the way it transported me to a certain time in my life sealed the deal for me, I find that to be so incredible how a perfume can encapsulate a moment in time that brings back memories. However I wouldn’t blind buy this because it is super devisive so get a sample.

kispo

Somebody said it before and I say it again BABYPOWDER.
The moment I put my nose on it , I had a flashback of me changing my son's diapers 😄
Although the drydown is really nice

JaySentz

Fresh and clean with some sweetness. Although there is no neroli listed I am picking up something that smells like it (maybe part of whatever the ‘green’ is). Neroli smells nauseating to me so I can’t give an unbiased review.

It does smell refined and I like that it’s not a straightforward fresh scent. If you don’t mind fresh green and sweet you’ll probably like this. Just not for me. Will probably give away the 2ml sample.

Lizahoff

On me/to me, this smells very mature. It really reminds me of something my grandmother would have worn.

For what it’s worth, she actually did belong to a yacht club.

DonFlorentino

In my opinion probably the best one for summer.
I'm in love.

ShaunMichael

I think this is one of the best marine scents ever. Most of the niche ones make me nauseous….. and the designer ones are boring. Thank you for not adding white flowers to this interpretation like so many others do.

Osfrisi

40 Konts is a masterpiece, a luxurious-smelling experience! It’s not a fragrance for the hot summer midday, but you can rock it on a summer evening. It’s versatile and ideal for the spring/summer.

There is sweetness, but not annoying, slightly in the background mixed with woody, amber tones.

Compliments are programmed!

_DR_

Just bought a 1.7 oz bottle, not really for me. I'm willing to sell or trade for another fragrance. DM if interisted

Abel96

Where do i start? This fragrance is absolutely NOT for summer or warm weather bcuz it's very powdery, thick, creamy, honey sweet, slightly soapy and salty. The drydown is one on one ivory route minus the spices. Totally unisex. I like it a lot but i don't understand why they think it's a summer/aquatic scent. The only negative is that my nose gets tired of it after a while and annoys me.
Not blind buy safe, try sample first!
The performance is very good. The 50ml bottle is more than enough if u want to buy.

wadeem

I have a pretty decent collection and if I ever get complimented it's my wife (on some fragrances), or family members, otherwise compliments are very rare especially from strangers.

Wore this to a restaurant recently and one waitress came to the table asking which perfume I was wearing because it smelled so good. A few days later wore it again, went to a store and the associate came over to me and complimenting me on it. I always wear what I feel like wearing that day but honestly never got complimented as much on a perfume as this one...

ShaneL02

I got complimented by a group of girls as I was walking down a staircase wearing this lol. They just said I smelled really nice. I basically never get compliments from women, I only get compliments from dudes at work (construction). So yes this is a compliment getter if you're concerned about that lol

But aside from that this really is a brilliant perfume, it's versatile season-wise and very strong. Im hopeless at describing smells but I can say it smells exactly how the bottle looks. Defo get your nose on this one. Perfect for any occasion but I have a feeling this'll shine in warm summer nights.

Really unique scent, great performance for a spring/summer fragrance and the drydown is heavenly. Incredibly versatile, bottle is incredible and perfect signature scent. Could easily see myself wearing this all year round. 10/10

haynesar

Cant get enough of this one. Luxurious smelling, imagine old money style and you're on a yacht party. Very versatile can be used year round. Great performance.
Green salty and powdery opening. Baby powder. Dries down to a beautiful sweet amber.

junkioberyoloman

Really unique, salty and slightly sweet amber with some green notes. Top notch perfumery and blend that I think everyone at least needs to smell. Versatility is very good but I see this working it‘s best in the summer.
Performance is really good for a scent that can be used in the summer. 2-3 Sprays will get you 10 hours of projection before it turns into a skin scent for another 8.
I think the value of it is quite good, just because of how little you need to use and the versatility you get.
Compliments are basically inevitable.
Atomizer and presentation is absolutely superb.

Hands down this is the strongest and most potent fragrance in my collection! Last for 15+ hours, I would say it projects loud for 8 hours, then it becomes a skin scent. The smell is incredible too! It screams class and luxury. The opening is salty and as it dries down it becomes a more sweet scent. I think it definitely contains honey, there is a lot of sweetness to it. It definitely gives the vibe of a 'yacht club member' in my opinion, very well blended scent. it is really versatile, so you can wear it in any season without a problem, however it would fit the summer sunsets the most.

Definitely a 10/10 will repurchase it!

Another fragrances I've wanted to get my nose on for a long time. Boy am I glad I tested it before ordering a full bottle! I know it's a personal thing but I'm surprised more people don't think it straight up smells like expensive baby powder. I have a decent collection and love complex fragrances with powdery accords etc., but for some reason, this smells way too much like the stuff I used to put on my kids asses if they were getting diaper rash as babies. That said, I need to test it more on skin as the dry down is more luxurious than any other baby powder I've used, so it could just be that mental connection I have ruining what is otherwise a great scent.

gbags24

40 Knots is by far the most luxurious smelling fragrance I own. I've noticed many reviews saying that it smells like a rich man on his yacht in the middle of the ocean eating something honey/sweet-like and that's exactly what it is. It opens with a fresh, marine, airy scent and slowly dries down to an ambery sweet smell, kind of like a Pepsi or Coke. For a "fresh" fragrance, it lasts all day with 3 sprays. Perfect for any occasion: gym, school, dress up or down, whatever you can think of. The notes on here don't do it justice at all. I haven't heard of comparisons to Tonka Cola; I don't particularly remember it too well, but the idea is there. I think it's the perfect signature scent for anyone and practically suits any age group.

Crusader Smitty

Absolutely love 40 knots however, if you enjoy but it's too harsh/loud, go try Amouroud White Hinoki. Thank me later! It's like the step brother of 40 knots, it is absolutely beautiful too.

Go give it a try!!

dimatomo

The opening of 40 Knots is very similar to Naxos, and i am almost sure, that 40 Knots contains Honey and Cinnamon.

great-heart-9

What a masterpiece 👏, Xerjoff is my second favourite niche house behind Amouage. This fragrance is something unique, the smell works fine for both women and men. In my opinion this is a woody powdery fragrance. The performance is really good. You should try it.

poopyslapper4782

Honestly I don't think the notes do this fragrance any justice. Salt I can understand but the marine notes are a stretch. I'd describe it as more of a creamy, almost spicy cola smell. Great performance and smell. To my friends it smells of cinnamon on my skin but that's a stretch.

Superunknownnn

To my nose this smells like a fresher and better quality Tom Ford Noir

John718

I have a 3.4 Oz bottle of Xerjoff 40 Knots that I’m willing to sell/trade. It’s a tester bottle & it’s basically 99% full. Please P.M me if interested. Cheers

perfect summer scent! Salty like the sea, a little sweet and woody.

First impression: I get where they were going with this one. I believe the idea was that this is the experience of walking on board a luxury yacht and going below deck. The opening you get salty air as you approach the boat. Perhaps you look around awe, and then go below deck. After that, you're onboard and inside the boat, which reeks of luxury wood materials. It is slightly powdery so I'm not sure how that fits in but it's nice.

There's something sweetening it up a bit and I couldn't figure out what it was initially. Later on a caramel type smell is present that gives it a polished feeling, almost like as if a fantasy note for lacquer, without having it smell like actual lacquer. Very nice and also interesting perfumery. There's a very very slight hint of funk here deeply under the surface, perhaps from an agarwood material or actual oud. Longevity is until you shower and wash it off. I initially sprayed my arm the night before I wore it, and I could still smell it 20 hours later.
---------------------------------------------------
Summary: I've never been on a yacht but I have been on luxury boats and this jives with that. Complex fragrance that I'm looking forward to testing further, and I might buy a bottle of this one.

Tee_Rich

I own a full size bottle of this. It was a blind buy, because reviewers hyped it up so much. This fragrance smells very much like a powdery, women’s aerosol deodorant from the 80s. That’s the most accurate description I can come up with. I was so disappointed when I first received it. I should’ve sent it back, but I didn’t. I now revisit it from time to time, and it’s growing on me, which many fragrances do, but it is definitely nothing like I expected.

wizkid04

Marine my a**! This is sweet Amber. Very artistic but a peculiar smell. Do no blind buy this thinking you’ll get an Aqua do gio style.

tab369

This so tough for me. I reallllllyyyyy think to even remotely consider this a marine or aquatic fragrance is a STRETCH. Without a doubt the name association has to be the only thing that it marine like, all these reviews really reaching to make any connection to the water by a yacht or like a beach club. It's not, I'm sorry but the entire JTC line doesn't release notes (& all the bottles are blue so nice try) so I don't know how everyone is so convinced they know? Obviously I don't even really know. What I do know, is this smells like slightly salty baby powder. It is not very bright, in fact I would really like powdery to be added to Fragrantica's note breakdown. Imagine walking along the coast and you hear the roar of waves & the crash & you expect the be hit with that salty ocean mist, but instead you're hit with a mist of baby powder, that's 100% what this smells like.
I don't know if there is Heliotropes, Iris, Violets or what that is causing that powdery smell.
I can totally see the toilet comparison too, it smells like Clorox toilet bowl cleaner to me if I don't spray it on my skin.

The DZ

I really like this, but I think it's quite mature (40+) and old money. Doesn't fit that many occasions for me.

A great marine fragrance, but a snobby one. For a linen suit wearing silver fox in the Hamptons.

Projects strongly on me for 3 hours, stays on skin for 8. Smooth, always fresh.

Faris.n

Great fragrance and very artistic. This is how Niche perfume should be. Unfortunately, I can't buy it yet until I finish my bottle of Ambre Nuit Dior as they have a similar dry down. I highly recommend you to try it and please give it a time to do its own magic.

Dhillon1990

Such a beautiful and long lasting scent. Everything about this is just perfect. 10/10

hihero

My favourite spring/summer scent. Longevity on skin about 8 hours for me on clothes 12 hours easily.
This fragrance screams quality indeed. Definitely not offensive and signature scent worthy. Can be worn in a professional setting or in the evening on a date but I think it truly shines in the sunshine.

charlieleejr

40 Knots might be my favorite fragrance right now. It's extremely versatile, smells amazing, and performs great. I think the name is a little misleading because, at least for me, it doesn't give off an aquatic vibe. I get the woods, the salt, the green, just not the "sea notes." But maybe it's because I don't spend much time in the sea so I don't know what "sea notes" are supposed to smell like? It is a bit unisex so you have to be confident when wearing this.

Mr. Fisk

A family member said I smelled like a toilet after putting this on 😆.

And yes I had showered.

osc375

Reminds me of Ambre Nuit, but the dry down reminds me a lot of Creed’s Royal Oud; the spicy cedar base shares similarities.
This is heavier and denser than the mentioned fragrances tho.

#433 in my "Tour de Fragrance"
Xerjoff 40 Knotts
Batch Code: 30022N
Date of Production: 10/27/2022

At the request of a community member I moved this scent sample to the front of the line. Bought it in a sprayette from Twisted Lily for $6. I have nine other Xerjoff's I hope to evaluate before year end. Xerjoff keeps secret the fragrance components, like I'm going to blind buy a $200+ bottle of fragrance with no idea what I'm getting?

This is billed as a woody, aromatic aquatic. Not really, and aquatics are generally not much on longevity. While this does offer minimal sillage, it's a skin scent most of the day. Very oily, so I would not spray your clothing as it will absolutely leave oil spots.

The "reminds me of " fragrances have no relationship whatever, to this scent. The opening is very green and salty, a hint of conifer or something like clove/menthol/camphor, can't really tell. Cedar. Also a little amber and a floral I'm not able to identify. I'd categorize this a woody chypre, not an aquatic, more like Polo, Quorum, Duc de Vervins, Mercedes Select, etc.. There are lots of likeable EDP strength woody chypres out there for less money that make more of an impression. This is mild, inoffensive, safe for the carpool, elevator, close spaces in the office. More for date wear IMO. Good year-rounder, but not worth $200 to me. I won't be adding a bottle to my collection.

If woody chypre's are your thing, save your money and go down market for an EDP like Polo Cologne Intense, $60. Not as old school and tobacco heavy as the original. Some mint, grapefruit, vetiver, it's a fresher scent. Or go further up market and grab Nishane's "Hacivat" for $150.

Harry0117

DBlack47

I bought this scent for my birthday and was incredibly excited to wear it. 40 knots is definitely NOT a fresh aquatic fragrance, but it is a summer time evening fragrance. Starts off with a really nice baby powder, salt-esque vibe for around 30 mins and then settles to spiced, woody cedar with some green notes in the background.

Edit: I wore this during the day and found it to have the most beautiful dry-down. DO NOT let the baby powder analogy put you off. This fragrance is perfect.

As crazy as it sounds, this incredible masterpiece combination of cedar, baby powder and spice is actually unbelievable. It lasts 12 hours on my skin and over 24 hours on clothing, great projection and sillage. I would say this is a “sample first” but I love it.

I know sime people like it short - and I’ll give it to you: If you want to have a semi fresh, rich and “full” fragrance - you gotta try 40 knots. This is a Xerjoff must have.

nicetosmellyou

40 Knots is a really interesting fragrance. Because the notes or accord breakdown don't give you the slightest idea of how this smells. I don't think they are accurate at all. First off, this is not really a summer fragrance in the way that you might think it is. The main notes I pick up are sweet honey, spicy cloves that remind me of clove pomanders balls we make during christmas that you hang up for them to smell good. There is also a heavy dose of musk, slight cedar woodiness and a touch of salt. It's very sweet, but not overly so.

40 Knots smells really elegant and classy and I think this is an all season fragrance except for winter. Yes I said it reminded me of christmas but that doesn't necessarily mean it has to be worn during that time. It's kind of paradoxical because while some aspects of it reminds me of Christmas, I think the scent aligns really well with Xerjoff's idea of a yachting lifestyle in the Mediterranean sea because it manages to smell regal and classy.

ScentedRoyalty

I get the saltines in this more then anything I get a bit of freshness not much minimal aquatic notes but not much. It's not the greatest thing ever either you really need to sample this before just buying it might or might not be your taste I don't think it's a hot summer day fragrance maybe like a moderate hot. It reminds me of the "fresh" candles in bath and body works honestly not bashing on this at all this is good but i think it's a bit over hyped.

This was my first “niche” perfume purchase so to say after I sampled it. This is just amazing. I really don’t know how most of the people don’t get the aquatic note or don’t smell the salt.

I have been raised in a sea town and I am instantly hit with the scent of salt and skin, just like you have spent the whole day on the beach, got in the water and after you get home you smell your skin. The salty note I get which is very prominent, for all the longevity of the fragrance. I get the slightly warm, woodsy even boozy amber scent all encased in this salty nuance of the sea. It reminds me of the hot summer nights, the breeze from the sea, the livelyhood of summer, the people, the sand, the sun, the smell of the sea water.

For me this fragrance is a personification of a hot summer day on a beach club having fun. I can see why some think of it as a “grown up” smell but for this is a smell a 20 year old in white linen T-shirt and pants with money. It’s sexy, cheap, cheeky and playful. Absolute masterpiece. One of my friends even said that it smelled like money and I can’t not agree.

The performance is also outstanding, especially in heat. 12+ hours on my skin, even after the night club and a shower.

To keep it short the dry down on this one is the discontinued Calvin Klein Dark Obsession and I loved that cologne.
This is a Winter fragrance guys❄️ 💯

Pensive15

This opens with a really synthetic "aquatic" smell that might be off-putting, then for the next 3 hours smells like really nice herbal, spicy, peppery soap that for me smells very calming and generally nice and for the rest of its about 8-10 hour length smells like a light amber- vanilla-wood. Honestly recommend, it smells really rich and is the kind of thing perfect for the warmer months but suitable at all times of the year. The sillage is nice for the first ~3 hours and longevity as i said before is about 8-10 hours. Worth every penny but might get boring after a while.

OBrien1510

Smells almost exactly like expensive baby power or baby wipes and certainly not like the aquatic marine like freshie that I was expecting. Thankfully I only got a sample as it's not really for me.

EDIT: Ok with some more time it does smell nicer on the dry down. It reminds me a bit of tabbaco vanille on the dry down just with the Christmas spices toned down. Very pleasant after a few hours but still not sure I'm wowed enough to spend the full whack

Peegore

My take on 40 Knots -

First 30 Mins - Soft powdered florals

30+ Minutes - Peppery Cedar ( VERY Creed Royal Oud )

I believe the name 40 Knots >>> "Aquatic opening" is pure Synesthesia.

I like this very much.

My batch is quite fresh 12323N ( 3/5/23 ) so time to mascerate, but performance for me at the moment is approx 8 hrs, projecting arms length 2-3 ish hours dropping to skin scent. Sillage seems reasonable thoughout.

Ansary

This fragrance is one thats versatile yet classy. I dont get the salty aquatic ocean vibe that many get, however i smell some light salty amber and lasts long but projection is moderate for the first 3 hours of the fragrance's life. I really do like this fragrance and i think that its worth every penny.

JonnyFrags

I just have to say - this stuff is so good I bought an 100ml back up bottle in case they reformulate it.

Everything about 40 knots is so perfect and this is so versatile you can wear it literally anywhere. To the office, to a wedding, on a date, to a funeral, to synagogue, to court, to the beach, to a party to ANYWHERE.

The performance is incredible too. Sillage, projection and longevity are all very very good.

This will always be one of my top 10 fragrances.

Jucmorgo

This is the perfect capture of the atmosphere of the air and scenery when you stand on a street in Oslo on ca 200-300 moh. and the sky is clear and bright and some breeze from the fjord is catching your cheeks but it's not marine since you stand far from the shore, more like halfway to the nearby forests, between the older town area and area with family houses and garden. You can see the fjord and the city center down below but you are near the forest area and those small gardens. The Sun is shining on you, uv is quite high but the air is quite nice. Everything is like... bright , like you put an insta filter on it. You can feel the past, the future and the life of the present in each air molecule you inhale.
Wooden houses, block, gardens, newly painted fences, salty air, cool forests, garden plants and apple trees, flowers.
All this in a bottle.

GabeOz

I’m gonna be straight up truthfully RAW about 40 knots.
This isn’t aquatic.
This isn’t freshy.
This is a warm ambery sweet powdery fragrance.
I think the idea of sea notes freshly aquatic toned with a little green touch is actually a prank on us.
This smells to me powdery. The opening It can be overwhelming if you spray too much and blast it too close to your skin.
Someone below said it did smelled like baby wipes johnson&johnson in the opening… and that’s so true.
Then it dries down to this (not so much)sweet kinda ‘YSL bleu electric’ vibe… really ambery.
This is going to annoy people on hot days if you go heavy on the trigger no joke!
Unique high quality Hellyehh!!! Long lasting?? Jesus Big time!!!!

LLdeduction

Semi-marine (not as much as you'd think), woody, slightly green/herbal, and ever so slightly sweet with a noticeable honey up close. Rather than being a representation of the ocean, its more so alluding to a yacht club dock. The woodiness with a ever so slightly plastic-y undertone gives it the yacht at the dock type of vibe. Its subtly salty to give a very slight marine feel but not close to being dominant if that's what you were expecting.

Good performance for a warmer weather scent btw.

EddieMa

This is exquisite perfumery, the true meaning of niche.
The first time I sprayed this on, I hated it. It smelled like an east European drug store, but after a few minutes my nose go used to it and the strong opening was gone and I absolutely fell in love with it!
The next bottle I'm getting. Super versatile!

M1K£

Like others have mentioned, it’s not as aquatic as you would expect, but that’s not a bad thing. I sampled it and was not sold initially, but as time went on I began to love the salty and woody combination. It’s unique and obviously top quality. I bought a full bottle. Very versatile and has become my favorite scent.

Gaz4

Great scent, a banger for spring, summer nights and all of fall. Is this an aquatic? No, not to me. It is salty, but so is beef jerky, and jerky does not remind me of the sea. This is a woody, amber, and powdery concoction, smelling it I can see it smelling like a yacht club...rich wood, classy powder and deep amber...with a pinch of salt to remind you of your location. But marine?!? No sir.
9/10

Anabol2336

I reviewed this one a couple of years ago as one of the best niche fragrances on the market and my decision still stands. Finally some reviewers have discovered it since my last review and have given it nothing but praise. The scent profile to me is indeed quasi aquatic. Basically reminding me of Acqua di Gio Profumo more than anything else I can think of, only if even higher quality, which really says something because Profumo is amongst the highest quality of designer scents you could buy. I see some reviews stating they don't find it aquatic, but then why else would the description of the fragrance be that of a yacht club? That statement is from Xerjoff themselves. Now of course it's not as light and aquatic as say Dolce and Gabbana Light Blue, but it is definitely reminiscent of the ocean for sure. Performance is amongst the best you can get for a fragrance in this genre. Highly recommend even for the steep price tag.

fuckleshire

As others have mentioned, this fragrance is simply incorrectly marketed. This is NOT a freshie. As long as you can accept that, it's a very nice wet driftwood smell. It's super salty and dense and basically smells like a wet log that's been soaked in ocean water. The fragrance can get a bit cloying with the salt note and for that reason, I'd recommend wearing this exclusively in the fall/winter. But in the right setting, this is pretty unique and classy as far as woody scents go. Also, lasts forever, if you're into that.

Ishtiaq08

Sprayed this on before heading to a social event, and was asked by someone there... "Who smells like baby powder?"
That aside this is a lovely scent in my eyes, soft powdery, slightly salty/amber nuance.

rmnnnnn

I expected sea and freshness for summer days. Instead, I got a powdery and heavy scent for the night. Not complaining, I like it! Just not what you'd expect. I'd happily buy a bottle and wear this year round except hot summer days. Unfortunately, according to my girlfriend, this feels like a scent for an old man and it's too heavy even for the evening/night occasions.

joeyplace

yummy yum yummy 🤤 cedar pine full room everyone loves

Mr.Sand

I might get some hate. But this one really did not wow me at all. It smells like a super generic mens cologne you’d buy at a department store. It’s not gross by any means, I find it’s really quite nice. In my opinion it’s generic and not worth the price.

SamM1971

Basically, this is a lighter version of Roja Enigma with a modified opening. They both came out about the same time, so I am not suggesting one followed the other, just saying that Roja Enigma dry down is very close to the dry down of this. The opening does remind me of Dior Ambre Nuit, but only for the first few minutes (pink pepper) and then it quickly goes to Enigma. Very nice fragrance, especially if the cognac opening of Enigma rubs you the wrong way.

HDM80

Unique, interesting and handsome scent. To me it smells like a light version of bottle shaped cola gummies, mixed with powder, some medicinal mint (almost vicks-like). Its strong, earthy, powdery and sweet. It smells like a very niche mens soap from a 5 star hotel. Masculine, depthful and unique, but not for me.

JonnyFrags

Just bought a slightly used 100ml bottle of this for an insanely good price and I am in love.

This stuff makes me feel some type of way. I literally can’t stop sniffing my arm.

Such a lovely aromatic ambery and powdery fragrance that I can now say is my new second favorite Xerjoff behind Naxos. Sorry, Tony Iommi.

10 out of freaking 10 for me.

chestercopperpot

I’m glad I ordered a sample from lucky 🍀 scent. I would not want to even give this a full wearing due to the strong powdery note.I can’t say I’m a fan of this scent profile . I had high hopes for this one, but hey, I still love the house of Xerjoff they have done good ones. This one is just to powdery for me.

Cinimod1

I'm a fan. Imagine sleeping in a wooden cabin on a yacht out at sea and you have the window open. You're welcome 😊

evertonnick3

Xerjoff does not miss. I haven’t smelled a xerjoff fragrance I wasn’t impressed by. With this one, I was caught off guard. With a name like 40 knots and a blue bottle I was expecting something lighter and aquatic. That is not this. This is rich, heavy, and powerful. Off the top it gives me a Christmas vibe for some reason. As it dries down, it lightens up just a little bit. This could be pulled off in the summer, but it should probably be at night and dressed up. This smells awesome, but this is not some acqua di gio or Versace pour Homme, this is the fragrance that beats up those fragrances and takes their lunch money.

RULE NO 1: ALWAYS, always, sample first at different times and occasions and then decide to pull the trigger.

RULE NO 2: There is no such thing as BLIND BUY. So re-visit Rule 1, when you are tempted to fall for the reviews especially by social media influencers ( especially the ones who flaunt their sex appeal)

TOO CLOYING AND HEADACHE INDUCING FOR A SUMMER PERFUME!

After all the rave reviews by YOU TUBE reviewers, I succumbed to buying a sample. Personally I find it too cloying and gives a headache and I just sprayed twice. So a hard pass.

Suggest sample first in different occasions and then pull the trigger. No doubt good quality and strong projection.

As an aside, I had first sampled a clone of this by ALEXANDRIA FRAGRANCES. I had found it cloying but I thought may be they didn't nail it and I succumbed to the YT reviewers:) If you like this scent profile and find it too expensive, ALEXANDRA FRAGRANCES has nailed this scent profile almost 95% and would be a good cheaper alternative. That said, I cannot vouch for the quality of ingredients used.

For summer from this brand, I would prefer XERJOFF - Mefisto, which is on my wish list and I am waiting for my online discounter to re-stock and the price is USD 149 for 100 ml. ( yes, its a genuine online retailer with a track record:) )

PerfumedParrot

I sprayed this generously at the Scent Bar during a hot New York day. I wasn’t too impressed at the time, as it gained an unexpected sweetness and didn’t last longer than a few hours (by the time I was back to my hotel, it had gone). A few months after, I discovered a sample in my handbag and decided to wear it again. This time I really liked it.
I get a fresh Encre Noir style cedar, with hot, cinnamon-spiced apple pie. It’s quite the juxtaposition between the acidic zest of the sour green woody cedar against the custard-sweet-amber. It still doesn’t last long (certainly not in a Toronto heatwave), I get about 4 hours. Other than that, I can’t fault it, as it’s a tantalising blend.

Kakarot

Just received my first bottle of this in the mail and its as even better then i remembered while sampling.. I get amber, marine, salty and floras in the opening. smells right for summer but also has a deep richness. it smells professional and mature and soft and delicate all at the same time. try it, try it try it.

Dvntex_

I have reviewed PDM Sedley before, of course I don't want to compare both perfumes, they are incomparably different, but you can definitely feel the difference of niche realms. Both are niche and luxurious formulations, but 40 Knots is definitely something really higher, regarding the quality of raw materials used and their price. This is a homage to the beauty perfumery presents, as an art. This is very complex, thick, rich, truly beautiful amber perfume, that has lots of aspects to it. You can definitely feel a high amount of fabulously chosen naturals, sparkle and lightness, complexity and texture of amber. I imagine how it's dancing and transforming on the skin. The salt like olfactory aspects are morphing and changing together with florals, to my nose of course. Every singular whiff of this perfume brings different sensations. I imagine Rose in the formulation, smoothed and beautifully built and supported by sort of Geraniol, Phenyl Ethyl alcohol, Phenyl Ethyl Acetate, Damascones or Rose Oxide, I definitely feel something rose like and floral. This is definitely a perfume for an experienced nose, you should be "grown up" to this, it has blown my head out of the shoulders. But a thing I am sure about is, that you should give it a justice by dressing very sharp. This is elegant outfits approved only, in my humble opinion. Why?

Because this smells like an Italian billionaire wearing a perfect linen suit, sipping Negroni, smoking a nice cigar on a terrace with an outstanding view on Positano's Bay during a wonderful sunset on Amalfi coast.

Fabulous perfumery.

EDIT: potencially Ionones were used in the formula in high amounts. I detect also powdery quality in it.

Agent47

Anyone interested in this bad boy for sale I’ve got a 100ml bottle with 97 percent of juice left or if you’ve got Xerjoff More than words then I’m happy to trade in. Thanks!☺️

Go4buck

Why do I smell amber in this?

Whateverwhocares

Soapy, salty marine-aquatic. Cedar heavy. Evolves with a mild wet wood accord. Aromatic green. I can see wearing this to go…yachting. I don’t know. An acquired taste.

Try Vertus’ Cyan instead.

Imcheap17

Is my nose broken??I'm getting a TON of minty freshness in the opening, like eucalyptus, and a sort of cooling sensation when I sniff it up close, yet not one comment on here mentions that.. as it drys it's getting a bit powdery and woody while still holding that menthol. I actually quite like it. I seen someone comment about a cola fizzyness I get that too. I'd pick it up if the price was right. 7/10

Fragmeister

I have never smelled a fragrance that changes so much from first spray to its dry down. In the beginning - salty, marine , refreshing. 15 minutes in it starts to morph and eventually becomes Ambery, powdery and seductive. Could be year round but feels like it’s made for summer evenings that start out on a boat and end on a beach party.

GenZPerfumery

Amber. This has a ton of it. Yes there is cedar, yes there is a faint oceanic/acqutic note, but this is a sweet+salty amber scent. 1000000% a cola smell in the opening and remaining if you spray it off clothing. I've lived in a coastal city my whole life, and this doesn't NOT smell like an ocean breeze. It smells like a nice ambery cola.

Young people could totally wear this for party scenarios. It has a sexy enough profile while not smelling juvenile. Some people could find it a little cloying as the amber is a little syrupy.

Also, I'd love to get a statistic on how many people saying it "reminds them of being on a yacht" actually go on yachts. Smells nothing like that. Just people parroting xerjoffs marketing of the scent.

Summary: I like it, but the amber gets nauseatingly thick and sweet/cloying after the opening. Selling my bottle.

Sniffitout

This is far from the aquatic, woody, freshie it appears to be, but it's unique, long-lasting, and high-quality. Overall, I'm not the biggest fan of the scent profile.

The Scent:
I don't know why sea water notes are listed, I smell no such thing. It opens very powdery with a bit of rose and a salty touch, but no watery notes. The dry down brings out sweet ambers and I'm 90% sure there's angelica root in there giving it a sharp, green, peppery tinge in the background. I prefer it in the dry down as the powdery rose goes away, but find the scent profile to be too mature for my taste overall. I see the target demographic for this being 45+ year old guys. It definitely has many similarities to Dior's Ambe Nuit - for anyone who's smelled that - but with most of the amber being replaced with salty notes and a slight green tinge. In my opinion, the salty green notes don't mix nicely with the rose and amber.

Performance:
Performance is the strong suit here. It consistently projects a few feet for hours then starts to sit closer to the skin, but can be detected after a full day of wearing.

Versatility:
You could wear this in any season in most situations, but if you're not 45+ years old I think it'd seem a bit out of place to be wearing it. So, it loses points on versatility in my book due to the narrow demographic that can rock it.

Overall Rating (using my own weighted ranking)
-Scent: 35/50
-Quality of blend: 14/15
-Versatility: 7/10
-Timelessness: 5/5
-Performance: 15/18 (longevity, projection, and sillage)
-Value: 1/2

Total Score: 77/100 or 7.7/10

es_paradis

My idea was to buy Naxos for winter, but this was a bit more up my alley. It's not an aquatic but Xerjoff never said it was - I understand how they think of this as a marine inspired fragrance. To me, it smells like a day on a very expensive sailboat. It's salty, woody and sweet - sort of like wearing the most exquisite sunscreen on a brand new Riva sailboat. Leans masculine to me, but women can pull it off. It's not fresh or citrusy so don't expect a Cool Water sort of thing. Massive compliment puller.

AP Riyadh

Love it!
Uplifting pleasant smell like a floral sea breeze.
Great for summers and above average performance even in extreme temperatures.
Blind-buy worthy.
Slightly masculine leaning and versatile, including being office safe.
Shukran Habibi!

Jucmorgo

For me it's the scent of the blue sky, green city with gardens and a nearby lake and fjord. The good weather scent, so to speak. Really interesting.

leatherorrisviolet

Since Dior’s prices have skyrocketed, this is probably now a superior purchase to Ambre Nuit

blackevans88

You gotta be deep in the game to understand this fragrance man a master piece

Longevity 10/10
Projection/Sillage 10/10
Uniqueness 10/10
Quality 10/19
Compliment factor is unexplainable to people’s reaction to this fragrance. They want to know instantly what you’re wearing. I never thought salt & cedar can work together but man it’s so sexy , alluring , sophisticated & potent . I got compliments @ the 6th hour mark .

RhettB27

Blasted with lemony green resinous frankincense off the top, surprising that it isn’t listed in the breakdown. It’s blatant! I love it already and love frankincense presented like this, it does go more marine and aquatic for sure though. This isn’t at all how I expected this to smell especially with others I’ve seen saying it smells nasty…not at all the case. It’s just mature and distinct, reminds me of TF Costa Azzura even..another with the frankincense presented similarly. No joke even the new Carolina Herrera Men Pasion has a big similarity to this with its frankincense, I can’t un-smell it!

Edit 6/26: wearing today and it’s definitely an awesome fragrance imo. A little sweet tinge comes out on skin as it dries, balancing the marine and green facets. Damn this stuff smells good no doubt about it I can’t fathom where the negativity is coming from, this doesn’t smell nasty or off putting at all. I keep getting little layers reminding me of other frags in the best way that are unexpected, while remaining quite unique. What a fragrance and one I plan to add to the collection in time.

meroo

I think it is too much for summer. It is not as fresh/refreshing as you would like (or need) in hot weather. I like it nonetheless, it is fairly unique, has strong performance and quality. but I think will be moving on when my decant is finished

Carlos_Torres

How many sprays do you all recommend for this perfume? If I apply too much, it gives me a headache, but I do enjoy using a generous amount.

Duci0167

I have this fragrance for 3 weeks. This is 2nd time I bought 40 knots. First time I judged him in a minute "this has to go!" and it has. Later I got a decant and I kinda liked it. Let's give him a second chance coz everybody were all hyped and telling me Get it it's awesome. Ordered I new bottle. Batch year and a half old but unopened. I don't know what to tell ya. One week it's intoxicating and other like I'm on the funeral. Notes listed on fragrantica? Throw them away!!! Aquatic? Salt? For summer? Just don't know. The most complexed Xerjoff I have so far. Maybe it needs few months to macerate? It's heavy on ingredients oil. I smell it and I have no f idea what I just smelled. Nothing pops out. Xerjoff didn't put those notes out there. Xerjoff JtC line is without notes. I'll wait for month more and if I continue to feel the same it will go and never to come back on my shelf. DON'T listen to YouTubers philosophy on 40 knots. Try it!

bridge2h2

Don’t expect this to be super fresh, although it’s marketed to seem very Aquatic. It smells a lot like ambre nuit. But still, It’s got great performance and smells amazing. I love it.

karenlynam

I truly thought I got the wrong sample. to me it smells like ambrette or maybe pumpkin spices. What in the notes is giving that smell. I agree that it is nice but not really an aquatic type perfume.

MikesPlaza

If you believe Xerjoff's BS storytelling, you are about to be disappointed.

Ther's nothing remotely aquatic with this one. Its basically a ripoff of Dior's Ambre Nuit, eg. a woody, salty, spicy amber.

Still, i love it to death. :-)

st_ch

This is not at all what I'd expected it to be. I thought it was going to be a freshie but it smells boozy and ambery. My nose catches a very strong spiciness to the fragrance. I don't believe this fits into what people normally would expect as a spring/summer fragrance. I would wear this in the fall. A very luxurious fragrance for special occasions.

rita.zaretskaya

Pretty cool, but how is this summer or spring?? It is very heavy and sweet, I’d say fall, maybe even winter. I definitely get wood and cedar, but not sea or water. The heaviness is that of Chanel Coco (which I like), maybe more.
Tested from a vial, but I’m sure projection and longevity are beast level.

Cartiluvr25

To the person who said it smells like reflection man: please get your nose checked out

tecfield

Aromatic salty and woody. I get a short 5-10 mins marine vibe but it goes away shortly. Has these beautiful natural woodsy notes which I love. To me it's a year around and office safe fragrance. It's not very radiant off of my skin. I was hesitant to try this because of marine notes in it but thankfully it is not an issue on my skin.

charlie_vz

Just got my decant of this. Definitely at odds with this. A very dominantly ambery, salty-woody green scent. Can't tell if it's a balanced scent though. Seems like something I need to spray on an hour before I go out. Unlike anything I've smelled before. It's great in that way I suppose

MESEE

It shocked me on the first try! I expected a marine/aquatic scent. I only found a heavy woody scent that smells too old. Actually, My wife's comment was "It smells grandpa!"
However, Somehow I loved and appreciate the scent itself, Yeah it's not for me but it's a very good quality and will test again next winter!

cranky137

I don’t get any aquatic qualities. On my skin it’s a heavy amber/cedar suitable for men in fall/winter. Not my type and nothing that excites me in this scent in early spring…

NNNnovicenichenose

Sadly on my skin I almost immediately get the baby powder/baby wipes that's been mentioned before. After having tested some funky ouds I suspect there might be something of that sort here that in the blend brings to mind the idea of baby wipes. I love the dry down of this on paper but it's not good on my skin and I have no desire to smell like baby wipes and wait patiently for the dry down in hope that it will come around.

Swolecido

Bought into the hype and was severely disappointed. Doesn't really remind me of an aquatic fragrance at all. All I get is heavy aromatic and green notes on my skin. I will say that it's very rich and powerful so if you're into it, you'll probably REALLY love it.

pwizzy

if you are in Vancouver looking for a bottle I am looking to sell or trade; pm if interested :)

Leviathan001

40 Knots is well-blended and composed of quality oils, but it's overwhelmingly underwhelming. I own, respect and have sampled many Xerjoff fragrances, but this is as equally generic as Uden. It smells like 80% generic men's shower gel, 10% generic body lotion and 10% baby powder. This is office safe, smooth, pleasant and inoffensive but definitely forgettable, uninteresting and not worth the price tag. On the bright side, this strikes me as a versatile fragrance that one could wear day or night in any season.

chrysis99

My ignorance has completely blinded me to blind buy this, full presentation. On my skin it’s just Spicebomb. It pains me that every time a customer sprays it at work it reminds me of such a dumb decision I’ve made. It is a sweet, mineral scent that is loud but flat, and I envy anyone who has any different experience than I do. I would 100% recommend this to anyone looking for an expensive dupe of Spicebomb; if you’re looking for an aquatic, fresh scent however, this is not the one.

Crodney98

Day 1: I got a sample of this today sprayed it on and it’s been two hours now and I honestly don’t really like this scent. It smells like baby wipes and it gave me a headache I’m not really getting why this fragrance gets so much love it’s honestly not a scent that interest me or stand out. All I get is baby wipe scent. I will keep trying this on however to see if my opinion changes.

bart4543

Wow this is so underrated from the house. It seems to get lost in the shuffle but believe me I have explored almost the entire lineup within the last year and this is in top 5. A very unsual salty marine amber scent with smoky woody and rosy facets. I picky up some spices at times and perhaps green facets. I only wish I knew the note breakdown. Oh yeah and the performance is very very good.

alekp213

Quality scent, projects, lasts a while, extremely versatile, with an unbeatable aroma. Dare I say it this is the ultimate all in one fragarance

jaktrela

I wouldn't say I liked it initially as I expected more summer freshy, but I appreciated 40 knots after time—Woody, Jammy, ambery. Very Luxurious and I do not say it often, ETERNAL.

WJR

Aquatic Luxury, what more is there left to be said!

Humm Yai

Absolutely love to scent! Wore it to work for the first time and it was about a 45° day with a slight wind and got two compliments walking from the parking lot to the front door. On the way to my office I picked up five more compliments in 10 minutes. Nobody could quite put their finger on the scent profile they just knew they like the fragrance.

To me the scent mostly comes off a little powdery and ambery with occasional hints of marine notes. Versatile enough for cold weather and an absolute beast in warm weather.

scentedfella

40 Knots is my personal favorite from the Join the Club Collection. It has a hint of ivory route orange type note inside of it.

Pros: + You get your money's worth as this is a high concentration juice, 34% perfume oil !
+ Smells Lux
+ Fresh and slightly Sweet and Salty . Unique smelling
+ Projects and Lasts a long time . A little goes a long way!

Cons: - Due to the high concentrate it can become headache/nausea inducing ( just spray less)
- The salty note may not be for you..

Conclusion: This fragrance is a good pairing by dressing up and going to dinner. Going out with your buds to a cigar lounge. Going sailing or cruising!

pwizzy

I like the fragrance quite a bit. I do. but I have been misled. marine??? aquatic?? this is comes off VERY ambery to me. I get a little bit of wood and green but i do not get the aquatic part people are talking about on my skin.

Endlessfumes

one of the best creations in perfume history!

dilfluver777

initial opening is extremely ambrosial and smooth. the wood notes are extremely understated. the notes listed don’t really show thru in the fragrance in my opinion. it's quite a powdery amber scent in a green sort of way with a slight hint of leather towards the end. it's definitely got an old school masculine cologne kind of vibe with a bit more of a modern twist. the type of scent a rich 60 year old italian grandad would wear. very sophisticated and slightly formal. it's not a bad smell by any means, i guess it just wasn’t what i was expecting based on the notes. if you’re expecting a salty aromatic wood scent, this isn’t it.

Ansarit

I’m surprised no one said it smells very similar to imagination lv

Overall- 8.7/10

NewToySmell

So many good reviews but to me it smells like that ant kill spray whyyyyyyyyyyyyy

Sniffathon

This is a beauty! Not exactly a true blue fragrance and also not quite a freshie. It’s not distinctly salty or marine. Nothing distinctly “masculine-aromatic” making it perfectly unisex in my opinion. Just a beautifully constructed high quality combination of smooth and salty woods. As a female I find it straight down the middle unisex and very wearable all year round. An absolute love, but just shy of being able to justify the cost of a full bottle.

MixJoey

My signature scent! It's been a good month since I found myself a little passion for perfumery, no real experience, my first perfume, I bought it in 2014 and it was YSL's men's night! good choice for a beginner!
I looked at tons of reviews, tons of video to inform me as much as possible, then 40 knots, on paper had everything to suit me.

I ordered xerjoff samples (no blind buy for me) and as predicted, it totally suits me, a big crush for me and my mother who was around when I tested it.

Very long lasting, I can feel it for hours on me, easily 6/8h+. The opening, between powerful and enormous. I totally see myself wearing it throughout the year, day and night.

I think 40 knots is really niche, people talk about it but i feel like it's way underrated. I love that it's a bit "underrated", it makes it a bit more unique to me.

John718

Anyone looking to purchase OR trade for a 100ml (3.4 Oz) bottle of Xerjoff 40 knots, please PM me. I have a bottle that I’m willing to part with.

Clauder13

This is basically Dior's Ambre Nuit with salt and green notes added.
Really nice fragrance but it becomes too salty on me.
Could be worn all year round.

Tman98

Still very unsure about this. Kind of get baby wipes vibes. Smells a bit like what a grandma would smell like. I’m keeping this for now but think I’ll end up selling it.

Yehoshua@me

Nice scent! Pretty much imho very similar to VR spice bomb with just a little less sweetness with saltiness added plus a nice floral rose in the composition…

Kiwy

This summer has nothing. Unless we are talking about summer in countries like Canada, Finland, Iceland, New Zealand, etc. The name goes on one side and the fragrance on the other. The fragrance is not only the beginning, it is throughout its life after applying it. This fragrance above (71°F - 22°C ) only with two sprays it becomes nauseating even for people around. As a fragrance for spring or fall it is ideal. 100% Unisex. A bit masculine only the first 2 hours maximum.

Mister.Oli

I am very confused about this scent. I blind bought it (I know, not so smart) after I heard numerous friends speak very highly of it. To my nose, this is an incredibly sweet opening, which doesn’t seem to be a popular remark in the reviews. I get some caramel, maybe some amber whist, the only thing I read here is that it has a very salty base. I do not smell this at all and I doubt it has been reformulated. Someone mentioned here that it smells like a classy lady in church, and that describes it perfectly. As a man, this seems to be a hard scent to pull off. I doubt that I will wear this much, if anyone is willing to trade/buy, will be willing to let it go.

Stew25

To me it starts off salty and woody then the dry down is very similar to Roja Enigma because all I get is Coca Cola, it was a blind buy and I’m definitely keeping my 50ml bottle but it can get a little bit sickly after a bit it lasts all day on your skin but if you looking for a fresh scent I’d give this a miss.

Steven221283

@smfmpd1 - I agree with you and your husband, it definitely leans feminine to me. Heavily, in fact. Like something a classy lady would wear to an event.

gretta

This opens sharp, yet clean, in a DW detergent/dryer sheet kind of way. The saltiness pulls it masculine, but the dry down is similar to Oud Minérale which I adore and have backup bottles of. However, I am very into Xerjoff at the moment and am v impressed by the longevity of them (at least with Bouquet Ideale, Lira, Italica, Dama Bianca). To me this leans masculine, yet I wear Oud Minérale on the reg. I think the dry down on this is better than the opening and def worth the wait. I feel like this would be perfect on a clean, sexy, tall male surfer, at a bonfire on the beach, on an August night. Yum. SO yum.

VETTIVAER

Opens with ozonic notes, a musky and sweet "salt" accord, and rosy florals.

Over time, notes of cloves, iris and sandalwood reveal themselves.

In the base, there is musk - lots of it. An amber accord also seems to supports the musk from the base. The overall effect is opaque - don't expect a translucent freshie like Creed MI or Erolfa. The salty musk effect in 40 knots is chewy and dense.

Overall a very enjoyable fragrance. As usual, Xerjoff knocks it out of the park with the packaging and bottle design. However, I feel the price does not justify the quality of the scent.

Performs really well, no complaints there.

smfmpd1

I have to ask if there are any ladies out there that wear this scent? I blind bought it for my husband, but when he tried it on he said it smells feminine. I tried it on, it def leans more feminine on me. Just want to see if anyone shares a similar experience?

wrath98

Very similar to Ambre Nuit, just a bit more intense and masculine. Can be worn any season, cuts through cold and isn't too heavy in warmth. I like it but don't love it, if you love Ambre Nuit you should definitely try this.

FMilan

Jaipur vibes.

iniodar

The herbal-y opening of this fragrance is quiet similar to Chanel Allure Sport which smells like natural body scent meets intense equatorial sunshine. Not that opening is bad, but I think they can do better with the opening. Thank God the opening didn't last too long, as it replaced with a nice powdery wood slash amber scent, and it does last a long time if you spray in clothes. I sprayed 6 times, 7 hours ago, and it's still going strong. I also like the fact that this isn't a nuclear blue fragrance, that it'll ever enter a choke mode.

I agree with some comments below which said that this fragrance feels familiar but you just can't put a finger on it. When I smell it, I thought I smell something similar like it too, but I won't say this fragrance is a clone of something. Maybe it has a cliche generic blue DNA in it, I don't know.

So far, I am still in the "ok" territory with 40 knots. Maybe I just need a little more time to familiarize myself with this fragrance, just like the other Xerjoff perfumes that I owned. It wasn't an instant love like I did with Mefisto Gentiluomo.

RandyHolbert

if you love being out and about, this is the perfect scent for you. it is surely mine. a very aquatic perfume, reminiscent of lazy days on the beach, or out at sea on some yacht with your buds. lasts long, even after a shower

Dixieland Delight

Fantastic woody, spicy, bright but rich marine salty fragrance.

No, it's not a freshie aquatic. It's a warm, spicy woody, high end smelling marine type scent.

It's one of the easiest niche grabs I own, and the performance is great. I only like this more every time I wear it.

It's great for nearly any season, nearly any weather - but I would avoid very high heat when you're going to be outside. That's about it.

It's rare to smell a fragrance as interesting, balanced, appealing, and uniquely laquered wood marine.

Somehow familiar and also not.

This is one of my favorite fragrances in my collection. Really no weaknesses.

9.25 rating.

churchofpetrol

This is the most hilariously long lasting fresh scent I've tested yet. I sprayed this on my hand and smelled it pretty clearly 12 hours later in cold weather. Pretty citrusy in the beginning but the mid is really intensely salty, which I'm not quite sure I'm into yet. Oddly enough the far 12 hour dry down really reminded me of Sedley, a fragrance that doesn't last nearly as long on my skin. I've never smelled Ambre Nuit, but I've tested Enigma/Creation E Parfum Cologne pretty extensively and I can't tell the slightest resemblence between the two.

StackMaintain

Very nice. Opening is a cross between Dior Eau Noire and Dior Ambre Nuit. Drydown is Roja Enigma pour cologne

Mrscent

The drydown reminds me of Jaipur Boucheron EDT!

Yo-Geo

Sexy baby powder...

Ehollie

I simply love this from start to finish. The freshness the woodiness, the amber. I really don’t see this as an aquatic, and that’s perfectly fine. The scent develops perfectly starting off fresh ending up a perfect blend of woods and amber. It last the entire day, which is what we want in a fragrance right. With that being said I wouldn’t dare overspray. 6 to the pulse points is more than enough. You can wear this in any season, dressed up or casual. The bottle presentation is beautiful. Out of a collection over 150 bottles, in which 90% are niche this has earned the spot of my favorite. It never lets me down, always delivers always gets amazing compliments. Absolute love. I cannot see myself without a bottle of 40 knots in my collection

ularewolf

After getting some samples of fragrances from Xerjoff I thought I would like the most, I just have to face the fact that this house is not for me. Aside from Naxos and Richwood, I have yet to find a Xerjoff I would want to buy, even as a decant.

It's at least an interesting combination marrying forest greens and the sea. Soon thereafter, it leans into "candle shop" territory and begins to remind me of Chypre Palatin. Most Xerjoff fragrances seem to use the synthetic notes that apparently bother me, because while I do not label synthetic as 'cheap', I do not find the 'high quality' Xerjoff is apparently known for in most of their fragrances.

Overall: Meh.

hamp261

The opening was very surprising to me. Not the typical blue fragrance, instead very woody and the wood is of an oriental type, similar to middle eastern incense.

After about 5-10 minutes some salty marine notes takes over. The middle eastern incense is still there but more as a supporting role making the aquatic notes more interesting, and different to other blue fragrances.

About 40 minutes to 1 hour in, it settles and become a bit sweet, ambery and salty but at the same time with wood notes behind it. It’s an interesting way of keeping it dark/deep and bright/fresh at the same time. I can see why it’s so versatile.

I can appreciate the scent and quality for a while, but I wouldn’t want to wear it. I agree with people calling it nauseating, it’s too much for my taste, even with one spray only.

atticus4

This is one of Xerjoff's best! Better than Ivory route which has this nasty spice rack opening, the dry down is pretty much the same as 40 knots but 40 knots has this unique awesome opening and amazing drydown! This smells pretty close to Roja Creation-E like others said but better! Can wear this in the summer with the added salt notes!

John718

Anybody looking to buy/trade for a 3.4 oz (100ml) size bottle of 40 Knots, please private message me. I have a bottle I sprayed about 4 times max, that I’m willing to part ways with

PleadInsanity

Pros:
- Incredibly strong performance (I could still smell it after I tried to scrub it off in the shower)
- Admittedly a fantastic scent (well balanced, clearly high quality)

Cons:
- Became unexpectedly nauseating after a few hours
- Smells like nobility (and is thusly jarring on a rakish 27yo aussie who wears singlets and shorts most of the year)
- Bottle looks overwrought and wankerish
- Overpriced (although one spray is probably sufficient so in the scheme of things it might be justifiable)

Sodapop22

Smells amazing

Cherry Bloom

Luxurious and royal. Very salty. But so heavy that it's unwearable for me. I wish so badly i could wear it and smell this sophisticated but it's so nauseating and headache inducing. Such a loss for me

Page Bond 007

This smells like royalty and prestige. But it requires a bit of patience to develop, that is if you are one of those that judge a fragrance by its opening. I on the other hand love it from beginning to end & its my new signature for important events. The dry down is where the magic happens with this one. After receiving a sample, the opening seemed interesting, after 5-10 mins i got a whiff of the magic looked online for the where this spell could be purchased. Presentation is for classy and an experience in itself as well.

solegen

Trying this in the winter and I don't pick up any evocative of the sea. There's some slight ozonic notes but it is mostly balmy amber and rose very much like Dior's Ambre Nuit. Salt, if there is any combines with the woods and really just smells like a dry cinnamon to my nose.

Will have to revisit this again in the summer to see if there's any aquatic or marine notes and if it changes character. As it stands now it bears a strong resemblance to Ambre Nuit which is certainly not a bad thing unless you were expect something different.

oscarjcobley

Big dislike now. Blind bought, so a fool in that regard, but this just isn’t pleasant - after trying to convince myself to like it I can’t. It is very feminine, I think, and gives off this most peculiar quality which induces a nasty headache, almost without failure, in my case. Not worth my money. Performance is good on this, as a side note.

autumnrequiem

The drydown is amazing. It has a very ambery character in the drydown as many have mentioned. A sweet freshness permeates throughout the entire life of the fragrance. It is both enchanting and invigorating. I think Xerjoff really achieved an amazing balance here, because I see myself wearing this in both hot and cooler weather.

JonMaddgician

The good: Definitely a beast mode fragrance, will last on your skin all day and on your clothes even longer.

The bad: I'm not a big fan of the somewhat soapy opening, but that's just my personal preference, I don't like that aldehyde type fragrance note, kinda like Prada's Luna Rossa Carbon. My wife loved it though, smells like a clean fresh shower.

The ugly: The dry down turns somewhat salty, and look it's not really something to be ugly about, but it just fits the quote reference better... =P It reminds me of that accord in Ivory Route (also from the house of Xerjoff) which I much prefer over this, but I suppose I'm more of a travel club kinda guy than a sailing club kinda guy.

If you rock moccasins, boating shorts and polo shirts as smart casual, 40 knots would match your outfit quite nicely. If you wear your linen shirt with a few top buttons open, your tan comes from being in the sun and not from a solarium, this scent will go well with the smell of sunscreen. If you own a yacht or a boat with a sail, this is definitely the club for you to join... 👌

Soldatel

I bought this in the winter however started to wear in the late spring - summer after (remember 2020 Covid)? It starts very woody and pungent - then at some point the salty notes start to grow - and this development is very nice, I advise to try it in a warm to hot weather (at least 25 degrees Celsius). I have worn it on a 7 day boat trip in late summer 2020 - still feel the sea breeze and the uniqueness of this perfume. To be honest, I think there are a few people that can "understand" this fragrance from the first time, it takes a lot of tries and circumstances to completely be convinced of what is it capable, totally worth the money : projection is very good in the first 4-5h and longevity is around 8 to 10h. This is the cousin of Profumum Roma - Acqua di Sale and also the cousin of Lorenzo Pazzaglia - Black Sea; all three have that salty & aquatic vibes attached in the heart but they start and finish quite different. Anyway - I highly recommend this scent from Xerjoff - it's not your regular summer scent for sure.
