One day my agent called and told me that I was going to be styling Michael Jackson on a shoot with Annie Leibovitz.

I was beside myself - and that was an understatement. Michael was, and will probably always be, the biggest pop star in the history of music. Just his image alone has been ingrained in the minds of people all over the globe.

Because Michael was a bigger than life talent, Annie and I thought it would be interesting to go the other way - to dress him down, to show him unadorned. Annie had seen images of him onstage in a white t shirt layered with a white shirt on top = the look was clean and simple - and we took our inspiration from that.

When he arrived on the set in LA, I was completely starstruck. He came with his own crew and brought his own wardrobe. It took some time before he was able to let his guard down, particularly about wearing the clothes I had chosen for him. In the end, though, he trusted Annie, and Annie trusted me.

At one point while we were shooting, the idea to open up his t shirt came up. I remember taking a pair of scissors and cutting the t shirt directly on him, right on his chest. And it was that picture that became the magazine cover.

He sang for us that afternoon on a closed set for more than forty five minutes. It was one of the most memorable shoots of my life. I will never forget it, because Michael was everything.

On working opposite Michael Jackson in the 3-D short directed by Francis Ford Coppola, produced by George Lucas, and shown at Disneyland: "Maybe a couple of months before, I had a dream about being in the desert with Michael Jackson, madly in love, and an elephant stampede came up behind us and they put their trunks around us as we were sort of floating in midair— this very beautiful dream. So when 'Captain EO' came about, I suddenly realized that it was prescient.

"It was surprising because it seemed that anger was very difficult for him. He had a high voice and he was very tentative, very nervous about how he would come across. And I remember his reluctance to show anger or anything violent.
I think the whole thing took about three weeks to shoot. It was a short film about Michael Jackson coming to my ugly hideous planet. I play, of course, a grand high witch. … This was solidly in my witch period where I seemed to play every witch on the planet. But he comes to my planet and I'm cruel and evil, he sings to me and transforms my world. As it happened, [Michael] had a little retinue of space creatures, and one happened to be a green elephant, which only confirmed the prescience of my dream.

"I had extensive makeup, a lot of prosthetics, it took about seven hours to put on all my prosthetics every morning. … When the camera turned around on Michael, he asked that I still be in makeup even though I was off camera. I was initially a bit irritated by that because it took so long and I knew that I wouldn't be on camera. But I did it and I remember from the moment he started to sing, I was sort of overwhelmed, I'd never seen a transformation like that. The power of his voice, the incredible sort of electricity that surrounded him when he began to sing was astonishing. And all of the inhibitions that he seemed to have as a person disappeared and he became this dynamic and extraordinary force. Michael was a genius at what he did and capable of practically anything on stage. I think he was extraordinary."

"That was always fun, because the trainers loved to bring the animals out in the yard in the morning, pretty early in the morning, and they'd let the elephants reach up to tear branches off of big oaks – and then later the gardeners would come to clean up... and they'd bring the camels out and the snakes, just all kind of animals, they'd bring them up, and I loved to go down there and hang around the elephants. It's just pretty amazing and the animals were all very happy there. Except for the one barn. There was a keep out sign and that was for animals that had been abused. Because Michael always would take them in...and then they tryed to get them resocialized, so they would let nobody in there except for the trainers. That were the only ones that were allowed to be with that monkeys – all kind of stuff was in that barn (…) Well they came from the black market....Most of the animals Michael had were abandoned or abused, or black market or something. And he had them to be rehabilitated.“ -
