To parents and guardians of elementary school children
Subject: Procedures of elementary school and leisure activities from the 4th of May
Dear parents and guardians,
We would like to start by wishing you all a happy summer.
After long and dark winter days, with various challenges, it is very pleasant that our society is now on its way out of the limitations and restrictions affected by the Covid-19 virus during the last weeks. With the emphasis on keeping schools and leisure activities open the whole time, though with limitations, it is clear how important school and leisure activities are.
It is particularly pleasant that one of the first steps in the direction of lifting the ban on public events is that school and leisure activities will operate normally.
In an advertisement issued by the authorities, um takmörkun á samkomum vegna farsóttar, it says that from the 4th of May it will be possible to operate uncut care and teaching in schools as well as in daycare, leisure centers, youth centers and other services bound by law for preschool and elementary school stages. Therefore school activities will operate normally from the 4th of May. Distance and population size measures will though continue to be in place for staff members and parents.
Additionally, measures will continue to be in place with regards to cleanliness and disinfection. In the light of that, we think it is important to mention the following points.
- General teaching will start according to timetable on the 4th of May. This applies to all art and vocational subjects, sports and swimming as well as academic teaching. Few elementary schools will have a day of organisation on that day.
- From the 4th of May leisure centers and youth centers will operate normally.
- From the 4th of May, lists of professions in the front line, enlisted by the Department of Civil Protection will expire and children whose parents are in the front line will receive comparable service to other children in school and leisure activities.
- Children in risk groups due to Covid-19 should stay home if that is according to doctor‘s recommendations.
- If your children have flu symptoms, they are asked not to attend school or leisure activities.
- Young children, up to around 7 years old, who do not have the maturity or capacity to keep the required distance from quaranatined parents or siblings should stay home.
- Parents should not enter the elementary schools or leisure centers unless it is necessary.
- Events in school and leisure activities should be without participation of parents, such as spring days, end of school or other events that have usually involved participation of parents.
- Reception for new student groups in elementary school that require participation of parents can not take place this spring.
- Meetings with individual parents are allowed in specific areas and if infection preventions can be followed.
- If there are urgent reasons, parents can apply for exemption from school attendance for their children. Such requests must be in writing and thereby parents confirm that they take full responsibility for the student‘s learning while the exemption is in place. Requests are submitted to the student protection council. If the exemption is approved, the classroom teacher will contact the student and parents 2-3 times a week in order to check how the student feels and the progress of learning.
- Additional cleaning and disinfection will continue in school and leisure activities.
- Hygiene will continue to be ensured regarding all housing and communication.
- Adults should keep 2-metre distance between each other as conditions allow and it is not allowed that more than 50 adults gather in the same area.
With hope that the coming days in school and leisure activities will be joyful and bright
Kind Regards,
Soffía Vagnsdóttir, Executive Director of Elementary Schools
Soffía Pálsdóttir, Executive Director of Leisure Activities
