I was very excited for this book, especially with all the hype from the ARC readers. Like, it was sitting pretty at the top of my anticipated reads list, all sparkly and perfect, ready to blow my mind. Instead, it slapped me across the face like a wet fish with one of the most sexist, repulsive, misogynistic and downright problematic plots I’ve ever had the misfortune of reading. Rina Kent, WHAT WAS THIS??! I mean, seriously, did we all read the same book or? Talk about a major let down, a major flop!

I just read what I think is the worst book ever created, and this is my review of it. These are my thoughts, and my thoughts only. If they don’t align with your preferences or views, then, well, it is what it is. The topics I’m about to discuss should hopefully resonate with you, but hey, it’s a book review, and not everything is black and white, right?

_________________________________________________

I’m running for Prime Minister of England, purely to get this book banned everywhere and to stop this author from publishing any more books romanticising such behaviour. This book is an insult to words, an insult to everyone who’s ever learned English, an insult to victims, and, if you will, a crime against humanity. I pity the poor souls who read this book, the ears that had to endure it. I weep for the eyes that had to witness this catastrophic train wreck, a train wreck that can’t be saved. And most of all, I’m heartbroken for the mind that conceived this dumpster fire of a book.

This book has a majority of 5 stars on Goodreads. I wish, I wish, and I pray there was an in-real-life block feature, so I could block every person on this earth who rated this book anything above one star. One star is even pushing it. It’s an utter joke that it even got that one star. I genuinely, truly, and wholeheartedly believe I lost brain cells reading this. I couldn’t give it zero stars, so I was reluctantly forced to give it one. One second, you read the best review that perfectly captures how you feel, and then the very next second, it’s taken down from Goodreads. My brain was so fried by the end of this dumpster fire. The way it was hyped on Goodreads and BookTok, you’d think you were about to read the next Jane Austen novel. And to be fair, I was honestly impressed by the PR. It was so good, I didn’t even think it could be this bad.

_________________________________________________

While forcing myself to finish this book, I found myself giggling at some parts, but don’t be fooled. It wasn’t a giggle from the heart, it was a giggle from the fart, because the entire 444 pages of this book were stinky. A very stinky fart! The first two chapters of the book were the most utterly disgusting, inhuman, romanticising, fetishising nonsense I’ve ever read. And if anyone stands behind this author after this book, I’m seriously questioning your moral compass, because it seems to be stuck on “error, try again later.”

I’ve read a few of this author’s works before, and to be honest, they’re all essentially the same book with different fonts. I’ll forever be baffled that the author isn’t a 12-14-year-old Wattpad writer but a fully grown woman. I was shocked, jaw on the floor, glasses shattered. This cannot be! I need someone to tell me it’s a prank, because there’s no way this is real.

_________________________________________________

Two chapters in, and I already wanted to file a lawsuit on behalf of the main character. Two chapter in, and he’s already on his knees, by force, might I add. Like, bro, do you even know if he’s clean? Do you know his age? Can we slow down, please? What happened to consent? At the start of the book, the author puts this trigger warning: “Kiss the Villain includes themes of consensual non-con.” Key word: consensual. This means they’ve talked about it beforehand and come to an agreement. But mind you, they’ve never even met, and this man is literally forced to do things he didn’t consent to. Gareth, the main character even says “you can just let me go, and I’ll consider not reporting you for sexual assault.” He legit makes it known for what it is. How is this allowed? How is this okay? Have we lost the plot?

How did we go from Gareth, the main character, going to spy on his enemy, Yulian, to being held at gunpoint, kneeling, and being forced to do things he didn’t consent to, all in the span of two chapters? Are we okay? How have we as a society allowed authors to write heinous plots and excuse them as “dark romance”? I was clutching my pearls, hiding from my own book. How did this even get published?

_________________________________________________

Throughout the book, non-consensual acts are used as plot devices, from the main character’s girlfriend enduring non-consensual acts and later taking her own life because of them, to the main character’s future love interest Kayden, his wife, being a victim of gang-related non-consensual acts and dying as a result. Can you see the theme here? Women’s trauma is used as a plot line, a way to keep the story moving. You might think I’m joking or overreacting, but I’m not. That’s actually the plot. The whole story revolves around Kayden’s deceased wife’s death.

Before this book was published, the fandom had been calling out the author for her lack of diversity. All of her characters and side characters are white. If they’re not white, they’re close to being white, she added one Japanese character, who got a duet. Did I like Naomi’s character? Yes, in fact, I was so happy to read about someone who wasn’t blonde, petite, and blue eyed. But again, she picked the one race closest to whiteness. But let’s move on.

_________________________________________________

In this book, it’s mentioned that Gareth’s classmate is a Black, lesbian girl. Now, you may ask, what does her being Black and lesbian have to do with the plot? Nothing. Absolutely NOTHING. She had no real impact or anything to add to the story, except to check off a diversity box. Her being Black and lesbian had nothing to do with the plot. And don’t get me wrong, I’m all for short representation, but when you tell me that this character is Black and lesbian, but she’s never going to get her own book and won’t be mentioned again, it feels like the author’s just trying to shut people up with a “damn, here y’all go, stop begging me.” It felt forced. She didn’t even contribute to anything except for being Black and lesbian.

And mind you, this character was never mentioned before, nor will she be mentioned again, because the author has made it clear she’ll never, I repeat never, write a main character who is black or person of colour since she doesn’t have the “social experience.” Mind you, this book is an MM book, and the author is a woman. What social experience does she have as a straight woman when it comes to MM books? About as much experience as I have of baking croissants, and I don’t even know how to bake croissants.

_________________________________________________

First off all, the grape scenes. Scenes as in PLURAL. Because apparently, one scene of grape wasn’t enough for the author. And her other book having to take off a grape scene wasn’t enough for her. The author really asked herself what would make this dark romance pop off, and her own answer is more grape. What in the wattpad book is going on? Honestly, the fact that this was marketed as romance is enough to make me want to launch my phone into the stratosphere and never look back. Let it be gone in the black hole in the space. I don’t even need my phone like that anymore.

_________________________________________________

Second of all, let’s talk about the main characters. We will start with Kayden. He is a man in his thirties who is supposed to be this brooding, dark, mysterious professor. Except, instead of mysterious, he’s coming across more like an unhinged stalker with a PhD in being a walking red flag. He is literally in his thirties acting like he’s a frat boy who just turned 18. Kayden is out here avenging his dead wife, who suffered unspeakable horrors, so naturally, you know what Kayden's next move is… If you said get therapy, then you’re innocent and I love that for you. But no, this grown man, I repeat, grown man decides that he should inflict the same pain on Gareth? Be so for real right now!! This man needs to be thrown into the ocean with a brick tied to his leg, or, I don’t know, maybe a different plotline where he gets therapy and seeks help?

And don’t even get me started on Gareth. He is supposed to be the dangerous quiet golden child, but honestly, he spends the entire book throwing tantrums like a toddler denied his favorite toy and whining about not being loved enough. I could not take him seriously. You’re supposedly this bad boy, yet your only real threat is being late to a therapy appointments. And your biggest opp is a deceased woman? What was her crime, you might ask? Her crime was for being loved by Kayden. A wife who had Kayden first, probably Kayden's first love, and to be honest, she fucked Kayden first. I know that hurts and pissed Gareth off, but bro, when your biggest opp is a deceased woman, you need to reevaluate your life choices. He’s supposedly this strong mafia heir, but to be honest, I’ve seen more menacing threats from my friends when I try to take a piece of their cake.
_________________________________________________

The plot? Nonexistent, darling. WHAT plot?! It’s just a never ending cycle of discomfort, tantrums, and inexplicable violence. By the time I hit the halfway point, I was so checked out, I might as well have been scrolling through a frat boys roaster of the week. Seriously, what was I thinking giving this author another chance? Spoiler alert: I’m now in the biggest reading slump, and I’ll forever side eye BookTok and goodreads for their lack of real reviews. Like, can we please get some honesty in this gossip mill?

This was the most gruesome three days of reading. I had to force myself to finish it. What motivated me was the sheer amount of hype and 5-star ratings it got. Three days of my life, three days I’ll never get back. Because of that, I’m done with this author. Thanks for reading my rant. Safe to say I didn’t like it. And if you liked it, I’m side eyeing you, but hey, to each their own! Love xx
