MY STRUGGLE TO CONTROL MADELEINE

POLICE in Portugal are now trying to blacken the name of Kate McCann. Yesterday they called in a team of crime psychologists to help them build up a case against her.

Detectives believe that she killed Madeleine while “she was in an unstable state of mind”.

Kate herself told in an interview with Portugal’s Flash! magazine how she struggled to control Madeleine.

She told how she would run around “screaming...shouting for my attention. She cried practically for 18 hours a day. I had to permanently carry her around.”

In an interview just days before she was named as an official suspect, Kate said Madeleine frequently suffered from colic in the six months after her birth.

But speaking about Madeleine’s upbringing, she told the magazine that, rather than causing problems, that period of her life had created a “strong bond between mother and daughter”. Although the arrival of the twins shook up Madeleine’s life, she accepted them very well.

MADELEINE: POLICE CASE FALLS APART

THE case against Madeleine McCann’s parents was on the verge of collapse last night after Portuguese police were refused permission to re-interview them.

Yet in Britain an expert rejected suggestions fatal traces of the sedatives could have been discovered in Madeleine’s hair or in specks of her blood. Allan Jamieson, one of the UK’s top DNA specialists, said it was impossible to tell the concentration of a drug from a dried blood spot.

Madeleine judge refuses interview request

The Portuguese judge assessing the police case against the parents of Madeleine McCann has refused requests that they be ordered back to the Algarve, it was reported today.

Instead Kate McCann could be re-interviewed this week by British police acting on behalf of the Portuguese authorities.

Cops' McCann case collapsing

Under pressure ... tired-looking Kate McCann is driven away from
home yesterday as the case against her and Gerry looked to be unravelling

Meanwhile Portugal’s Flash! magazine published an interview with Kate — given before she was declared a suspect — in which she told how Madeleine was a demanding child.

She was quoted as saying: “The first six months of her life were difficult. She had lots of colic and cried 18 hours a day.

“I had to permanently carry her around.”

Portuguese cops have drafted a team of criminal psychologists to analyse Kate’s mental state, it was revealed last night.

Detectives believe her “unstable” mind may have led to Maddie’s possible death.

Officers launched the line of inquiry after seizing Kate’s diary which she began writing in the days after her daughter vanished.

DNA Evidence 'Can Be Explained'-Sky news

Madeleine McCann's parents have stepped up their defence amid reports they may be about to face more questions from the police.
The car was used to transport much of the youngster's items when the family moved to a new apartment some time after her disappearance in Praia da Luz on May 3.

Items said to have been carried in the vehicle include nappies worn by Madeleine's twin brother and sister Sean and Amelia, who have similar DNA.

Madeleine's own sandals are also believed to have been transported in the car - potentially allowing DNA from her sweat to be transferred

The vehicle had also been used by a number of people, including several family members, before it was examined.
Sky News Crime Correspondent Martin Brunt said up to 30 people are believed to have had access to the Renault in the 10 weeks after the car was hired

Commenting on reports that Madeleine's bodily fluids had been found in the car, he said it was quite possible one of the twins might have urinated in the car.

"Their DNA would be very similar to Madeleine's," he said. "It all creates a very confusing forensic picture."

Gerry and Kate McCann: 'We can explain Madeleine's DNA in our car'-The times

A family source said: “Who is to say what happened when they moved to the new villa? The seats were ripped out and everything including Madeleine’s sandals and the twins’ nappies were dumped in the car — which would have included traces of skin, sweat and bodily fluids.”

McCanns launch fightback over 'nonsensical' murder claims-The Independent

Madeleine McCann: Parents talk about her to twins 'all the time'

Gerry and Kate McCann have disclosed that they talk to their two-year-old twins about Madeleine constantly as the first indications of how they intend to challenge police suspicions that they killed their daughter emerged.

Madeleine McCann: Claim and counterclaim

Claim: It was widely reported that traces of bodily fluids found in the boot and spare wheel well of the McCanns' hire car were an 80 per cent match with Madeleine.

Counterclaim: A family friend said a "perfectly innocent explanation" was that the girl's belongings were moved from the family's holiday apartment to a rented villa. Among her possessions was a pair of sandals which would have held her sweat and thus her DNA. The friend added that more than 30 people — including family members — had used the car before it was seized by police, consequently contaminating any DNA samples. According to experts, an 80 per cent match indicated that profilers could find only 16 of the 20 markers usually used for such analysis which suggested the traces were tiny and degraded.

Claim: It is alleged that specialist British sniffer dogs detected the "smell of death" on Mrs McCann's clothes, the family's holiday apartment and their car, hired 25 days after Madeleine disappeared. The springer spaniel was filmed jumping around in an excited fashion and the video was subsequently shown to Mrs McCann during her police interviews.

Counterclaim: The McCanns' lawyers consulted the legal team of Eugene Zapata, who was accused of murder in the US.

A judge ruled that sniffer dog evidence indicating the presence of human remains was inadmissible because it was unreliable.
