General Summary...conditions on site are improving each day but progress is being hampered as a result of access problems for people and equipment.
Fukushima Daiichi Site—Work continues to restore power inside units
1-4 from temporary offsite power supplies.
Fukushima Daiichi Units 1/2/3—Seawater injection continues into these
units.
Fukushima Daiichi Unit 1—At approximately 11:30 am, 24 March, lights
in the main control room were restored. The amount of seawater injected
into the reactor core of unit 1 was increased by switching the injection
point to the feedwater supply line from the fire pump injection line.
Fukushima Daiichi Unit 3—Approximately 35 tonnes of seawater were
injected into the spent fuel pool through the cooling and purification
line on 24 March.
The smoke that was seen coming from the unit 3 reactor building on 23
March stopped without intervention.
Fukushima Daiichi Unit 4—A concrete pumping truck continues to be
used to spray water (not concrete) into the unit 4 spent fuel pool. The
concrete pumping truck has an extension arm and is able to more
accurately spray water into the spent fuel pool.
Fukushima Daiichi Unit 5/6—A temporary residual heat removal system
sea water pump stopped automatically 23 March at unit 5 when switching
its power source from a temporary power-supply to the offsite power
supply. TEPCO has replaced the pump with a new one and resumed normal
residual heat removal service.
Miscellaneous Information—On 24 March, three workers were exposed to
170 to 180 mSv (17 to 18 Rem) of radiation while working on cable
installation on the first floor and basement of the unit 3 turbine
building. Two of them had radioactive contamination on their legs and
were sent to the hospital for decontamination. It was reported that the
cable installation was occurring in a flooded area.
Fukushima prefecture is carrying out contamination surveys at 14
locations. Thru 21 March, 75,429 people have been surveyed. Among them,
97 people were above 100,000 cpm when fully clothed, but when these
people disrobed and were re-surveyed the count rate decreased to below
or equal to 100,000 cpm.
